l escándalo está servido, incluso antes de que termine el escrutinio de las votaciones en segunda vuelta de las elecciones a la alcaldía de la Municipalidad de Anchorage. El candidato conservador, Dave Bronson, mintió en sus informes sobre la financiación de su campaña. Ha violado la ley. En una nota urgente remitida el pasado 13 de mayo por el equipo de Forrest Dunbar (es decir, difundida dos días después de haberse celebrado las elecciones), el candidato demócrata que se ha opuesto a Bronson por la alcaldía en esta segunda vuelta ha denunciado que Stacey Stone, la abogada de la campaña de Dave Bronson, presentó “enmiendas importantes a tres informes sobre la financiación de la campaña” de éste. “Pero no lo hizo hasta que se cerraron las urnas, de forma que una vez conocido este hecho no pudiera cambiar el sentido del voto de los electores”. Este es un fraude claro, cometido contra todos los electores, incluso contra los que de buena fe dieron su voto a Bronson, y contra toda la ciudadanía de Anchorage. Si Dave Bronson termina ganando en estas votaciones, lo habrá hecho con trampas y quebrantando la ley; se convertirá en alcalde de la ciudad más poblada de Alaska sobre la base de engaños y mentiras a toda la población. Mal comienzo y peores augurios para lo que puede llegar a ser su estilo de gobierno municipal.
Un engaño deliberado Estos informes presentados por la abogada Stacey Stone tras cerrarse las urnas reconocen una deuda sustancial que antes no se reconocía en ninguna documentación, o que se cuantificaba como mínima. En los informes originales Bronson declaraba una deuda de 15,986.64 dólares al comienzo del año, reducidos a la mitad (7,500.00 dólares) a un mes antes de las elecciones del 6 de abril, a 5,000.00 dólares a siete días antes y a cero dólares siete antes de la elección de segunda vuelta del 11 de mayo. Sin embargo, la deuda reconocida ahora, con las elecciones terminadas, en los últimos informes modificados, asciende a 113,986.64 dólares; 109,250.00 dólares; 90,565.00 dólares y 65,496.19 dólares, respectivamente. “Desafortunadamente para los votantes de Anchorage, este comportamiento deshonesto es totalmente consistente con la forma en que la campaña de Bronson se ha llevado a cabo en el curso de esta elección”, ha dicho Claire Shaw, directora de la campaña del demócrata Forrest Dunbar. El momento en que fueron presentadas el 11 de mayo pasado estas rectificaciones confirma, según Claire Shaw, que el conservador Dave Bronson ocultó intencionadamente a los ciudadanos y a los votantes de Anchorage el estado real de sus finanzas de la campaña, “hasta el momento en que

he scandal is on the air, even before the tallying of runoff ballots in the mayoral election for the Municipality of Anchorage is over. Conservative candidate, Dave Bronson, lied in his campaign finance reports. He has violated the law. In an urgent note sent last May 13 by Forrest Dunbar’s team (i.e., released two days after the election was held), the Democratic candidate who has opposed Bronson for mayor in this runoff has charged that Stacey Stone, Dave Bronson’s campaign attorney, filed “significant amendments to three campaign finance reports” for Bronson. “But she didn’t do so until the polls closed, so that once this fact was known it could not change the direction of the electors’s vote”. This is clear fraud, committed against all voters, including those who in good faith cast their vote for Bronson, and against the entire citizenry of Anchorage. If Dave Bronson ends up winning the election, he will have done so by cheating and breaking the law; he will become mayor of Alaska’s most populous city on the basis of deceit and lies to the entire population. Bad start and worse omens for what may become his style of municipal government.
A deliberate deception These reports filed by attorney Stacey Stone after the polls closed acknowledge substantial debt that was previously not declared in any documentation or quantified as minimal. In the original reports, Bronson declared a debt of $15,986.64, dollars at the beginning of the year, reduced by half ($7,500.00) one month from the April 6 election, to $5,000.00 seven days prior, and to zero dollars seven days before the Runoff election of May 11. However, the debt now recognized, with the election over, in the latest amended reports, amounts to $113,986.64; $109,250.00; $90,565.00; and $65,496.19, respectively. “Unfortunately for Anchorage voters, this dishonest behavior is entirely consistent with the way the Bronson campaign has conducted itself over the course of this election,” said Claire Shaw, campaign manager for Forrest Dunbar. The timing of the May 11 filing of these rectifications confirms, according to Shaw, that conservative Dave Bronson intentionally concealed from the citizens and voters of Anchorage the true state of his campaign finances, “right up to the point where voters could no longer use this information to make their decision”.
