DISCRIMINACIÓN Y DESCONFIANZA EN LAS MINORÍAS ÉTNICAS EN EL SISTEMA DE SALUD

laska está siendo el líder indiscutible en el proceso de las vacunaciones en todo Estados Unidos. El 18% de la población ya está totalmente vacunada y más del 20% ha recibido la primera dosis”, comenta a Sol de Medianoche la doctora especialista en enfermedades infecciosas de Anchorage, Andrea Caballero. “Sin embargo, la población inmigrante y las minorías étnicas en este Estado están por debajo de la media en esta campaña de vacunación”. La doctora Andrea Caballero cree que para que se esté produciendo este hecho existen varios motivos: “las diferencias socioeconómicas se reflejan en la vacunación del Covid-19”, señala, porque son consecuencia de un contexto histórico de discriminación. El nivel económico de las minorías e inmigrantes suele ser considerablemente más bajo que el de la población blanca estadounidense, y ello implica vivir en grupos más grandes; trabajar en empleos presenciales, que no pueden desempeñar desde casa (teletrabajo, o trabajo remoto), o que les obliga a tener una comunicación y una relación personal, directa y muy cercana con los clientes”. “Además, para estas minorías, compartir en comunidad es muy importante. Culturalmente hablando, viven en grupo para hacer comidas, fiestas y celebraciones, acudir a la iglesia… Todo lo viven en comunidad y esto facilita el riesgo de los contagios”. Para la doctora Caballero, el nivel de
educación bajo de las minorías y los inmigrantes “genera un sentimiento de desconfianza hacia el sistema. Tengamos en cuenta las barreras del idioma, la falta de comprensión y de información y el hecho de que tienen menos posibilidades de acceder a los servicios médicos públicos. El inmigrante siente miedo por su estatus migratorio. Me refiero a que muchos de ellos están indocumentados y, por esto, no acuden al sistema de salud: por miedo a que les pidan los papeles y, al no tenerlos, acaben siendo deportados”. Estos factores hacen que “los individuos de las minorías étnicas se sientan maltratados por el sistema. El problema del racismo sigue muy vivo. La discriminación de ciertas minorías está institucionalizada, sobre todo con la población afroamericana desde los mismos orígenes de los Estados Unidos como país”. La nueva administración de Joe Biden “ha tenido un buen comienzo”, señala Caballero, con su decisión de aumentar las vacunas para toda la población. “Pero hay que tomar medidas para disminuir el escepticismo de las minorías, fomentando la educación y con más transparencia en las campañas”. El presidente Joe Biden ha dicho que los inmigrantes indocumentados deben tener acceso equitativo a las vacunas de Covid19 sin temor a ser deportados por Inmigración y Control de Aduanas. En Alaska, el ser indocumentado no impide que una persona reciba la vacuna.
ETHNIC MINORITIES FEEL DISCRIMINATED AGAINST BY AND DISTRUSTFUL OF THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM

laska is currently the undisputed leader in the United States in the process of vaccinating its residents. Eighteen percent of the population is already fully vaccinated, and more than 20% have received their first dose,” Anchorage infectious disease physician Andrea Caballero tells SOL DE MEDIANOCHE. “However, the immigrant population and ethnic minorities in this state are below average numbers for this vaccination campaign.” Dr. Andrea Caballero believes that there are several reasons why this is happening: “Socioeconomic differences are reflected in Covid-19 vaccination”, she says, because they are the result of a historical context of discrimination. The economic level of minorities and immigrants is usually considerably lower than that of the white American population, and this implies living in larger groups; working in face-to-face jobs, which they cannot perform from home (telework, or remote work), or which obliges them to have a personal, direct and very close communication and relationship with clients”. “In addition,” Dr. Caballero continues, “for these minorities, sharing in community is very important. Culturally speaking, they have meals, parties and celebrations, and go to church in groups... They live in community and this facilitates the risk of contagion”. For Andrea Caballero MD, the low
level of education of minorities and immigrants “generates a feeling of distrust towards the system. Let’s take into account the language barrier, the lack of understanding and information, and the fact that they have fewer possibilities of accessing public medical services. The immigrant feels fear because of their immigration status. I am referring to the fact that many of them are undocumented and, because of this, they do not go to the health system: for fear of being asked for their documents and, not having them, they end up being deported”. These factors make “individuals from ethnic minorities feel mistreated by the system. The problem of racism is still very much alive. Discrimination against certain minorities has been institutionalized, especially with the African-American population since the very origins of the United States as a country.” The new Joe Biden Administration “has made a good start,” says Dr. Caballero, with its decision to increase vaccines for the entire population. “But steps need to be taken to decrease minority skepticism by encouraging education and more transparency in campaigns”. President Joe Biden has said that undocumented immigrants should get equitable access to Covid 19 vaccinations without fear of deportation from Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In Alaska, regardless of immigration status, everyone over 16 years old is eligible to receive the vaccine.
