From the Desk of the
MARK HALEY President Smart City Networks
Continually Improve Processes!
Continual improvement is ingrained in the fabric of Smart City. It’s how we have remained a leading voice in the telecommunications industry, hospitality industry, meetings and events industry, you name it, for over 40 years. As we reflect on another quarter of achievements and growth, I am proud of our commitment to progress.
In the vein of improving processes, for the second consecutive year, Smart City has been named as a Top Workplace. This recognition highlights our dedication to cultivating a workplace where innovation and excellence thrive. I’d like to congratulate our incredible team who helped make this possible.
Another area where we have seen improvement is through our Career Advancement Training program (CAT), which works to provide clarity and consistency in our onboarding and training. An important subset of CAT is our new Promotional Evaluation Testing (PET) modules, an initiative that ensures every team member possesses the skills and confidence to advance in their career. This Pinnacle issue highlights Kyle Rainey, a technician at Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas who completed the program and was promoted from a Tech I to Tech II. Continual improvement!
But it’s not just Kyle. Throughout the quarter, our Network Operations Center (NOC) team members have demonstrated remarkable dedication by obtaining a variety of security and network certifications, including the Cisco Certified Network Professional Security Certification and the Certified Ethical Hacker Certification. Their commitment to personal development strengthens our ability to provide a safe event experience.
As we celebrate these achievements, we are also honored to highlight amazing events throughout this issue. By working closely with our partnered convention centers across the nation, we strive to deliver unparalleled customer satisfaction. Together, we will keep innovating, refining processes, and delivering exceptional results that solidify Smart City Networks as a leader in our industry.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to our latest Pinnacle issue, and we hope you take the time to read and enjoy it! To the top!

A Letter From Keith McNeely
Keith McNeely, our General Manager at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center has been with Smart City for 45 years and will retire at the end of 2024. Throughout his final victory lap, he wanted to share some of his thoughts and reflect on his long journey with Smart City.
PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE
Make it a goal every day to help at least one person. It could be as simple as giving directions, showing a customer where the restrooms are, helping a homeless person with lunch or just listening to a team member that has a problem. Just a reminder though; it may not turn out the way you think.
GLOW IN THE DARK WHAT?
Back in the early nineties I travelled to Los Angeles to help our team install a large event. During the move-in we asked the staff to return to the switch room and clear out their orders. Henry De La Rosa and I were standing outside the office when we saw three ladies walking towards us carrying boxes and folding chairs. We asked where they were going, and they said South Hall. South Hall was a hike from where we were, so I asked if we could carry their boxes, and they agreed. When we arrived at their booth one of the ladies asked for my business card, which I gave her.
A week later I am back in Houston driving to work. When I arrive, John Ott is waiting for me at the door with a smile on his face. I knew in an Instant I was in trouble. John’s only request was that I not turn the lights on in my office, and I agreed. There hanging on the walls glowing in the dark were 4 or 5 pairs of men’s underwear. John said the underwear came from a lady in California. The only thing I could think of is that one of the ladies Henry and I had helped sent the clothing to me. John suggested I make up a better story since he had already told my wife, Tricia, about the gift.
That night I carried my box of glow in the dark underwear home. Tricia and I talked about our day and at some point, the box became our topic of conversation. I explained that Henry and I had helped some ladies during move-in for an event and one of them mailed the clothing to me. At that point Tricia said she knew what my brothers were getting for Christmas that year.
All I know is I never saw the box again, nor did I ask about it. Why would a lady mail underwear to a married man? People helping people!
LIVE FROM LAS VEGAS!
During the first day of the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) held at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) each year, a representative of an AV company approached me. Intel Corporation had contracted with them to provide a live feed between the Sands Expo Center and the LVCC. The president of Intel was speaking at the Sands Expo, and they wanted the video to be transmitted live to their booth at the LVCC.
The issue was the AV company needed to use our fiber between the two centers to transmit the video. The tricky part was the fiber had already been leased to show management for the event. We met with Karen Chupka, Vice President of Events and Conferences, to see if she would loan the fiber to us. Karen agreed that the fiber could be used under one condition, the AV company could not bill Intel for the service, which they agreed.
The next challenge was the AV company needed a fiber switch in the MDF “main distribution frame” at the Sands Expo Center to complete the video connection. I informed Karen that we had a fiber switch available, but I would need help getting to the Sands Expo Center and then access to the MDF. Karen provided transportation to the Sands Expo Center and within 30 minutes we had the feed up and running, with the president of Intel streaming live in their booth at the LVCC. Intel was not aware of what Smart City and show management did for them. People helping people!
SLAM DUNK!
During the planning process for large events, we normally hire part-time employees to help with the installation. One year in Las Vegas during our planning process an ex-NBA player walked into my office looking for a part-time job. He had played basketball on the National Championship team at the University of Indiana, and then on to play in the NBA for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Needing a job, we hired him to help during the event.
I called Hugh Sinnock, a Vice President at the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority because I knew he had graduated from the University of Indiana. Hugh was genuinely interested in meeting with the player.
After the meeting Hugh and I felt compelled to help the player in some way. Hugh called the University of Indiana and they agreed to provide a full-time job for the young man. People helping people!
At Smart City Networks, we take immense pride in the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our team members. Several veterans who have served in various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces are among them. Their stories are inspiring, and it was enlightening to learn about them throughout Military Appreciation Month. This Memorial Day, we were honored to share their stories and acknowledge their service to our country. You can read more about Smart City’s veterans on our blog.
For this issue of the Pinnacle, we wanted to share the contributions of Arnold Chavez, General Manager at Duke Energy Convention Center, and David King, Technician at the Hawai’i Convention Center.
“I served in the United States Navy from 2014-2021 as a Master-At-Arms. My first duty station was in Virginia providing static security for ships overseas. I was able to make my way to Spain, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Greece, and Italy during this tour. After Virginia, I was stationed on Pearl Harbor Hawaii providing dynamic small boat security for assets transiting the harbor. My military service provided me with life-long memories and experiences I will never forget. Now that I am separated, I have the opportunity to attend college to better my future and that’s something I will always be grateful for.”
David King – U.S. Navy
“I would like to share with you what happened on my first ship, USS Iwo-Jima, back in 1990. [Editor’s Note: In October of that year, the USS Iwo Jima experienced a catastrophic boiler accident, resulting in the loss of 10 lives]. I had less than 3 years in the Navy at the time of the incident. The reason I was spared from the accident was due to a transfer back to Norfolk Naval Station in VA for my scheduled “C” School, one week before the accident happened. This event haunts me to this day. I suppose that’s what they call survivor guilt. I knew all ten of the sailors that were killed. Being on a ship, we tend to be close to each other as we work and play together especially during 6-month long cruises. We were all like brothers and family. We did so many things together. We rely on each other. We support each other. I got your back, you got mine. Unfortunately, this happened.” Arnold Chavez – U.S. Navy
KENNETH NGUYEN
At Smart City Networks, one of our core business principles has always been “It’s the People,” and we strive to highlight our wonderful team whenever possible. The Smart City Spotlight is dedicated to boosting our team members for their extraordinary work and dedication to serving our customers. Kenneth Nguyen is a Technician at Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas, and he truly went above and beyond with his answers to our questions. This is only a small excerpt, but we HIGHLY encourage everyone to check out his full interview on our blog to learn more about his insightful journey that led to Smart City. Kenneth, this is your spotlight!
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW YOU ENDED UP AT SMART CITY NETWORKS?
K: I started at Smart City in February 2022. My job history is quite diverse. I’ve been a barista, worked in a UPS warehouse, been a sales representative, line cook, waiter/server, financial consultant, bartender, tutor, animator/video editor, and a military service member. I joined the Air Force as a Geospatial Intelligence/Targeteer, later becoming an Aerial Transporter/Parachute Rigger. I enjoyed teaching and advising fellow Airmen, helping them with career planning and financial literacy. After an injury led me to reconsider my career path, I pivoted to IT, studying cybersecurity and networking. After the military, I worked at an AT&T store, where I met a Smart City employee who introduced me to the company.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
K: My favorite part of the job is interacting with different people from different parts of the world about their experiences. Being able to take what I can from their experiences and apply it to my career path/life has been a blessing in disguise. I find myself spending time with customers, engaging in conversations and ensuring they are good to go for their event. This job made me realize that I do enjoy customer service, but rather just talking to people in general and learning. Learning is my true passion.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE AT SMART CITY, AND HOW HAVE YOU OVERCOME IT?
K: The biggest challenge for me has been avoiding stagnation and complacency. It’s easy to fall into a routine and stop pushing yourself. However, being surrounded by inspiring colleagues and events like Dreamhack keeps me motivated. I’ve pursued further certifications and always strive for self-improvement. This continuous drive helps me stay engaged and excited about my work.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO NEW HIRES AT SMART CITY NETWORKS?
K: For new hires, I would say stay motivated and get those certs! There is a huge difference between knowing a customer cannot connect to the internet and understanding why.
CAN YOU SHARE A FUN FACT ABOUT YOURSELF?
K: A fun fact about me is that I was in a band and played the drums. Our first show was in a bar in the middle of nowhere and we had a beer bottle thrown at us. We were once described as sounding like “a group of drunk cats that got lost and ended up in a music shop and are desperately trying to get out.” Overall, it was fun having an excuse to hang out and be together
JQUANDREI ELLIS
JQuandrei Ellis is the Event Coordinator at the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center in Sacramento. He has seen a lot of change and transition in his short time with our company, but he’s shown a resilience to adversity and his commitment has been a true inspiration! We sat down with him to talk about his Smart City journey. JQuandrei, this is your spotlight!
HI JQUANDREI! TO START, WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN GEARED TOWARD EVENT COORDINATION?
J: I was born & raised in Los Angeles, California. I’m the youngest of 3 with twin older sisters. As an athlete/sports fan and music lover my whole life, those were the two spaces in which I initially got into the events industry. I’ve played a part in putting together dozens of concerts and more sporting events than I can count.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB?
J: I would say site tours are my personal favorite part of the job. Getting to be the first person to meet prospective or contracted

clients and getting them familiar with our services, as well as the quality of customer service they can expect, is always fun. Email and phone communication is an important part of the job, but being able to meet people face to face and engage in conversation is the key to building relationships.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR TEAM CULTURE IN SACRAMENTO?
J: I love the team culture here in Sacramento. Everyone is willing to help without hesitation and take on new roles. My team here has been immensely helpful. Our technician Esteban was recently named employee of the month and deservedly so, he also carries a ton of weight.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR CONVENTION CENTER AND ABOUT SMART CITY?
J: I love how naturally lit the recently renovated portion (including the office spaces) of our building is. My favorite thing about Smart City is how helpful everyone within the company is. Anytime I’ve reached out to someone at a different location about a client or on our corporate team with an inquiry, I get a prompt and warm response. People here genuinely want to help you succeed.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO NEW HIRES WHO ARE STARTING WITH SMART CITY?
J: Ask a ton of questions early and throw yourself into the fire when it comes to learning. You can watch others all day, but until you’re able to apply the skills that have been taught, it’s harder to build up the confidence to do it on your own.
TO WRAP THINGS UP, WHAT IS SOMETHING FUN THAT PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU?
J: Even though most people think I’m quiet upon meeting me, I had a successful run in broadcasting and as a DJ prior to my time here with Smart City.
A SUMMER SWIM
What better way to start summer than with a fashion show? Smart City Networks proudly supported long-time client SwimShow as they celebrated their 20th anniversary at the Miami Beach Convention Center. SwimShow, an annual event attracting fashion industry professionals from around the globe, has always been a bright and colorful event perfect for Miami Beach. Smart City recognized the event’s Wi-Fi needs and delivered an outstanding experience for everyone involved. As an added treat, to show appreciation for our many years of partnership, Smart City’s Miami Beach team sent the SwimShow staff Miami’s finest chocolate chip cookies from Insomnia Cookies.
AN OLYMPIAN TASK
How does one build an Olympic-sized swimming pool? That is a question Smart City finally got the answer to as the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials
– Swimming took place at the Indiana Convention Center & Lucas Oil Stadium. Three temporary pools were installed over the field in the stadium. Seeing all the hard work that went into building the pools up from nothing was a feast filled with pipes, water, and even more water. We commend the building and the event for getting the job done. We were also happy to provide services in tandem to the USA Swimming’s Toyota Aqua Zone, a fan activation event within the convention center. Everything flows together at the convention center, much like a swimming pool!
LIGHT IT UP, LOS ANGELES
Smart City Networks has been busy providing topnotch services for a variety of high-profile events and conventions at the Los Angeles Convention Center over the past few months. Each event showcased our commitment to excellence and our ability to support diverse gatherings with unique technological needs.
One of the highlights was the much-anticipated Original Lowrider LA Super Show 2024. This two-day event in the South Hall drew around 5,000 attendees daily, featuring the best low riders, motorcycles, bikes, and pedal cars. It was a vibrant celebration of culture, history, and self-expression.

We also helped host the AWS Summit Los Angeles, where attendees explored the latest in cloud innovation, from generative AI to analytics. The event offered over 100 sessions and included a robust Expo, allowing participants to engage with AWS experts and partners.
A special shout-out goes to our tech team for their outstanding work at the AWS Summit. They installed 76 patch cables and 6 switches for the “Self-Paced and Spotlight Labs” booth, ensuring flawless connectivity with no issues. The techs did an outstanding job. Kudos to Earvin Claros, Adolfo Ramirez, Danielle Castillo, Kevin Romeo, Marco Fierro, and Brian Flores for their exemplary efforts.
Smart City Networks is proud to have supported these incredible events.
At the 2024 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, Smart City Networks played a pivotal role in enhancing the event experience with our cuttingedge services. A standout feature of the event was the Lifestyle Expo, a unique experience sprawling over 270,000 square feet with more than 100 displays. The Expo showcased the latest in automotive, home, recreation, travel, and entertainment products and services. Highlights included the Green Power Prix-View with its innovative exhibits on hybrid and electric cars, and energy-saving products for the home.
Smart City Networks ensured seamless connectivity and services throughout the Expo, allowing over 185,000 attendees to fully engage with the interactive displays and technology exhibits. We may not be racers, but
COLUMBUS PRIDE
A SUGAR RUSH!
The National Confectioners Association’s Sweets & Snacks Expo, long held in Chicago, moved to the Indiana Convention Center & Lucas Oil Stadium in 2021. Starting this year, the Expo will rotate between Indianapolis and Las Vegas. The event fills the entire venue, focusing on candy and snacks, with attendees sampling goods from various booths.
Although building personnel cannot accept samples, Smart City received something almost as sweet. Sheldon Kaye, Vice President of Events & Technology for ConvExx, praised Smart City’s work, saying, “The show was great, and your team was by far one of the most responsive parties we have dealt with.”
The Greater Columbus Convention Center (GCCC) celebrated Pride Month with vibrant events, including the annual Pride Party on the Plaza, where guests enjoyed live music and festivities while viewing the Stonewall Pride Parade & March.
GCCC proudly participated in the parade and highlighted its year-round commitment through the Pride 365 initiative. The Center also introduced a Pride Tag Partner program, offering 25% off rentals for guests with pride tags. These initiatives showcased GCCC’s dedication to inclusivity and support for the LGBTQIA+ community.
SUMMER IN FULL BL O OM
The June Bloom event at the Santa Clara Convention Center marked the official start of summer! The event was filled with fun activities like face painting, a petting zoo, and a bounce house, representing a true gathering of the Santa Clara community. While Smart City Networks didn’t provide their usual technology solutions for this outdoor event, they still played a crucial role in its success.
Led by Tami Perez, the Smart City team at Santa Clara secured all vendors and raffle donations, ensuring great prizes for June Bloom. This effort perfectly showcased how our teams engage with local communities in more ways than just offering technology support.
FAN FUSION A BIG FAN OF
The fans have spoken: Fan Fusion was a huge success! The Phoenix Convention Center (PCC) once again played host to the colorful event that brings together fandoms of all kinds to show off their amazing costumes, interact with celebrities, and overall let their geek flags fly high! Knowing fans would be so passionate about the event, Smart City Networks worked extra hard to supply our technology solutions to keep everything on track.
For show management, Smart City deployed our wireless services, ensuring that the organizers could efficiently manage the event operations without any connectivity issues. This reliable wireless network allowed for the successful execution of Fan Fusion’s diverse range of activities.
One significant achievement for Smart City to highlight was the successful set-up of wireless connectivity to the redemption stations located outside the main venue. These stations, which handled registration and ticket redemption, helped manage the influx of attendees. By extending reliable wireless service to these outdoor stations, Smart City ensured that the registration process was smooth and efficient, minimizing wait times and enhancing the overall attendee experience.
WEDDING BELLS AT I - X CENTER
Love was in the air at the Cleveland I-X Center for Today’s Bride event. Exhibitors showcased cakes, dresses, photographers, and even a party bus for bachelorette parties. Smart City Networks provided on-site support, ensuring exhibitor booths were connected without issues to the Internet. We enabled real-time streaming of music and video, enhancing the overall lovey-dovey atmosphere. But we were also ready to problem-solve. We quickly resolved a publishing software hiccup affecting column wrap displays, guaranteeing flawless operation throughout the event. Exhibitors were able to present their beautiful visions without worry, thanks to Smart City’s expert support.
PLASTIC IS FANTASTIC
To paraphrase everyone’s favorite Barbie Girl song, life in plastic truly is fantastic! This quarter, the Orange County Convention Center buzzed with excitement as NPE: The Plastics Show returned to Orlando in May. As the largest plastics trade show in the Americas, this event happens every three years bringing together the newest and most innovative plastics solutions in one space. At Smart City Networks, we are accustomed to servicing events of all sizes, but this event is always a unique challenge that must be planned the right way.
The show covered 2 million square feet and featured over 2,000 exhibitors. However, our local team was well-prepared for this massive event. It was a collaborative effort between our technicians and customer service team to equip exhibitors and vendors with the services they needed for success. Our technological solutions were essential, but they were just part of the equation. Our local team worked closely with exhibitors to ensure their visions were fully realized, and our techs labored tirelessly to ensure timely installations. The result was another successful event in the books!
The Plastics Show is an excellent showcase of our skills, both behind the scenes and in client interactions. Kudos to the team! Though this event occurs only every three years, it is one we eagerly anticipate returning in 2027.
A “SPECIAL” EVENT IN TAMPA
demonstrations. We would like to thank Bill Duke from Columbus, Brandon Cooper from Orlando, and the entire Tampa team who worked tirelessly to ensure the successful execution of this event.
SOF Week alternates between International SOF Week, held in even years, and SOF Week, held in odd years. Historically, International SOF Week attracts larger crowds due to its significant international presence and extensive Special Ops Forces demonstrations on the water by the TCC. This year was no exception. Smart City provided over 275 internet drops to manage the event, support exhibitors, and assist attendees, including various agencies. Additionally, we facilitated a VR demo for the King of Jordan and the USSOCOM Commander during the live capabilities’ demonstration.
Overall, this was our most successful SOF Week to date and a record-breaking year for Smart City Networks in supporting the event!
Special Operations Forces (SOF) Week 2024 was one of the largest and busiest ever! With over 15,000 attendees from more than 60 countries, it was a monumental task for the Smart City Networks Tampa team.
What truly set this year’s event apart was Smart City Networks’ dedication to excellence and collaboration. Recognizing the immense scale and complexity of SOF Week, we called in members of our regional team to assist, bringing a wide range of expertise to the table. This collective effort ensured every aspect of the event was meticulously handled, from high-speed internet connectivity to tech-driven
TAKING SECURITY SERIOUSLY
Smart City Networks is excited to spotlight our contribution to the 38th Annual Police Security Expo. Taking place in June at the Atlantic City Convention Center, this event brought together law enforcement and security professionals to showcase the latest in safety technology and solutions.
Smart City was proud to support exhibitors at this year’s expo. Our role with any event is to always provide an essential infrastructure, allowing exhibitors to demonstrate their innovations with flawless connectivity. From our game-changing Wi-Fi services to advanced network solutions, our technology helps create an engaging and interactive environment for all attendees.
Our commitment to superior service enables exhibitors to focus on what they do best: presenting new security advancements to eager audiences everywhere.
GAME? SHALL WE PLAY A
Smart City Networks loves sports! Every quarter, our partnered convention centers host a series of different sporting events that celebrate team camaraderie and competitiveness. From inaugural league games to playoff battles and exciting tournaments, Smart City is always ready to service any type of sporting event and provide an excellent experience for fans and participants alike.
At the Kansas City Convention Center, the KC Goats took the stage for their inaugural season for the Arena League. Unfamiliar with the Arena League? It is a sixon-six indoor American football league that launched in 2024 with four teams. They will play four home games at the convention center, and it is an exciting start for something new! Smart City Networks is happy to be on this journey with them.
Speaking of different football leagues, the United Football League (UFL) is still going strong. Over at America’s Convention Center, the St. Louis Battlehawks showcased their prowess with an impressive 7-3 season record. One particular Smart City highlight was a playoff game that was played in the Dome. That game, despite the loss, was the league-best average attendance of St. Louis home games this season, with over 4,000 attendees utilizing the Dome’s Wi-Fi.
Meanwhile, the Virginia Beach Convention Center was busy with their own sport activities in April and May, hosting the Boardwalk Block Party volleyball event alongside three major basketball tournaments: ZGXL Basketball, Main Event, and the Atlantic City Showcase. Each event benefitted from a premium WiFi buyout by the streaming partner, ensuring robust and reliable connectivity for both participants and spectators, enhancing the overall event experience.
As we reflect on the diverse range of sporting events held this quarter, Smart City Networks takes pride in our successful partnerships with convention centers nationwide. They provide the perfect platform to unite fans and athletes alike.
THREE CHEERS FOR DELILAH!
The George R. Brown (GRB) Convention Center recently hosted the International Dairy Deli Bakery Association (IDDBA) show in Houston, marking a milestone as the largest electrical event ever held at the GRB. This feat was primarily due to the extensive array of ovens and refrigerators showcased during the event.
The scale of the electrical infrastructure installed for the IDDBA show was remarkable, boasting 4,079 120v electrical drops and 192 208v electrical drops. To guarantee smooth operations, a dedicated team of 18 electricians and 16 plumbers were on-site throughout the event, highlighting the meticulous
planning and execution required for such a massive gathering. We thank all of them for their hard work and determination to bring this event over the finish line.
The IDDBA is a nonprofit trade association catering to a diverse range of industry professionals including food retailers, manufacturers, wholesalers, brokers, distributors, and more. Their annual tradeshow is a premier event, attracting over 10,000 registrants and boasting participation from over 800 exhibiting companies. Renowned speakers from various fields, including business, policy making, culinary arts, and athletics, contribute to the event’s prestige.
One of the unique highlights of the IDDBA show was the presence of Delilah, a 5-year-old pregnant heifer, whose visit to the Pre-Con area provided an unexpected and memorable touch to the event, offering attendees (and members of a our team) a fun photo opportunity.
The success of the IDDBA show at the GRB is a testament to the collaborative efforts of Smart City Networks and the GRB team. The event’s impact reflects the commitment of both entities to deliver exceptional electrical and technological solutions. This commitment is demonstrated by the staggering amount of power ordered for the event, totaling 6,631,050 watts or 6.6 Megawatts, equivalent to powering 1,980 homes. Such figures underscore the capabilities of the GRB and Smart City Networks in handling large-scale gatherings.
The seamless execution of services for the IDDBA show further solidifies the GRB’s reputation as a top-tier destination for hosting events of this magnitude. It reaffirms our dedication to innovation and collaboration, ensuring the success of countless future events. As we look forward to future opportunities, both Smart City and the GRB are well positioned to continue our tradition of excellence in event hosting.
FIBER IS GOOD FOR YOU!
A
At the Optical Fiber Conference (OFC), over 12,500 attendees from 74 nations converged at the San Diego Convention Center. Smart City Networks, masters of fiber distribution, wove connectivity throughout the exhibit halls, powering the high-speed optical network, OFCnet. With approximately 630 exhibitors poised to showcase their cutting-edge technology, the event emerged as the premier platform for innovation. Among the stellar displays, Eoptolink’s booth commanded attention with its Immersion Cooling demonstration, offering a tantalizing glimpse into the technological horizon. As the future of fiber rapidly unfolds, OFC stands as a beacon guiding us toward tomorrow’s advancements.
WALK IN THE (NRG) PARK
Smart City Networks provided wireless and network connectivity through the entire facility during the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) 2024, held at NRG Park in Houston. As one of the primary gatherings for energy professionals to exchange ideas and advance scientific and technical knowledge for offshore resources and environmental matters, OTC has been a flagship conference since its inception in 1969.
At this year’s event, Smart City Networks provided comprehensive wireless and network connectivity solutions tailored to the needs of exhibitors, particularly within the oil and gas industry. Our robust infrastructure facilitated reliable connectivity, allowing participants to effortlessly share technical insights, innovative solutions, and industry best practices.
We are grateful for the leadership of Kyoko Sarchet-Hicks, our General Manager at NRG Park, who led her team with aplomb during this event. Kyoko’s dedication to excellence was evident and her Smart City team ensured the smooth operation of essential services, contributing to the success of OTC 2024.
By delivering efficient wireless solutions, Smart City Networks enabled exhibitors to showcase their latest advancements, fostering collaboration and driving forward collective knowledge within the sector. Our commitment to facilitating seamless communication underscores our dedication to supporting events like OTC, where industry professionals converge to shape the future of offshore technology and environmental stewardship.
NATIONAL SUPPORT FOR ALL EVENTS
In Kansas City, their presence was indispensable, as they facilitated moves, changes, and additions essential for ETS. With hundreds of ethernet cables installed and numerous late-night sessions, Frank and his team exemplified dedication and expertise while being committed to outstanding customer service. Beyond technical prowess, Smart City believes an emphasis on teamwork enhances client satisfaction and benefits the entire event. Frank and his fellow technicians, by rolling up their sleeves and delving into the intricacies of ETS, showcased the company’s commitment to excellence. Their collective efforts underscored the value of collaboration in achieving remarkable results.
Teams Work isn’t just a motto for Smart City; it is a guiding principle ingrained in our everyday operations. We have amazing team members who can strategize together and execute their plans with precision, and Smart City is thankful for their service!
Smart City Networks boasts strong local teams at our partnered convention centers, but one of the secrets behind our success is our nationwide support. Our ability to bring in technicians and customer service representatives from other centers has proven to be a vital asset enhancing the success of high-profile events like the Educational Testing Service (ETS) at the Kansas City Convention Center. For this event, Frank Lopez from the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in Houston, traveled to Kansas City with other Smart City team members to help launch the event. It reminds us how Frank and his colleagues embody Smart City’s core principle of “Teams Work,” displaying unparalleled collaboration from planning to implementation.
A GRADUATION CELEBRATION
Graduations mark a significant milestone in a student’s life, celebrating a massive achievement that promises unquantifiable future potential. At Smart City Networks, we are honored to support these types of events, and with the summer months upon us, a multitude of graduations took place this quarter. One highlight was the Virginia Beach City Public Schools Graduation at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
Smart City Networks provided a dedicated bandwidth line at the event, allowing for uninterrupted streaming of the ceremonies. This allowed for family and friends, whether near or far, to share in the joy of their graduates’ accomplishments.
The Secret to a Great Salsa
A successful team is like a great salsa. Wait! Let me explain. I recently returned from a transformative trip to the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center (HBGCC) in San Antonio. After trying some of the best the city had to offer, salsa has been on my mind nonstop. I’ve even started making my own at home, which has involved a lot of trial and error (emphasis on error). Though I think I’ve finally perfected a recipe I enjoy, this new hobby has taught me that there’s no single right way to make salsa. Many great salsas can have vastly different recipes and ingredients, and yet, they’re all delicious in their own unique way.
This realization made me think about our Smart City teams. Each team operates and functions a little differently, just like different salsas. I promise, I didn’t go to San Antonio just to eat my weight in salsa and marvel at the size of the Alamo. I went for something important. Keith McNeely, our General Manager at the HBGCC and a Smart City staple, is retiring after 45 years. His team organized a surprise retirement party for him, and it was an overall wonderful experience. I had the chance to sit down and talk with Keith for hours about his extensive career with our company and his thoughts on the changes in our industry. It was also a joy to see him honored and surprised at the party, and quite a few tears were shed in the process (much like tears were shed when I added two serrano peppers, two jalapenos, and one gigantic dried chile to my first attempt at making my own salsa…).
Jacoby’s Jabber
Smart City at HBGCC is a perfect example of what makes a successful team. Much like a well-crafted salsa, each member brings their own unique flavor and contribution to the mix. Every role is crucial. Just like how the right combination of tomatoes, onions, and peppers creates the perfect salsa, the right combination of skills, personalities, and dedication creates an outstanding team. Keith’s leadership over the years has been the binder that brought all these diverse ingredients together, ensuring the team’s success and the convention center’s stellar reputation.
But to continue this prolonged metaphor, there’s more than one way to make a salsa. I’ve been to a few centers now, and I can confidently say that no two of them have been exactly the same. They have different operations, different team sizes, and different ways to communicate with each other. Yes, we are all united by our shared goal of providing the best possible customer experience, but the methods in which we achieve that vary. Just as with salsa, there’s no single recipe for success, and that’s what makes our Smart City teams so vibrant and effective. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m definitely hungry after writing this and need to grab a snack. You can probably guess what I’m about to eat…

SMART CITY EARNS TOP WORKPLACE (AGAIN!)
Smart City Networks is delighted to announce that it has been awarded the Top Workplaces 2024 honor in Nevada for the second year in a row. This recognition underscores the company’s commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive workplace culture. The employees are the heart of Smart City Networks, and their satisfaction and well-being are top priorities.
When the team thrives, the entire organization benefits, and Smart City Networks is committed to continuing this journey together.
Smart City Networks extends its thanks to all its employees for their dedication and passion, which have made this recognition possible. The company looks forward to building on this success and continuing to provide an exceptional workplace for its talented team!
At Smart City Networks, we consistently look for new ways to help our employees grow and reach greater heights in their careers. In response to requests from the field, the Promotional Evaluation Testing (PET) program was developed to enhance the promotional process for our Customer Service Support Representatives (CSSRs) and Technicians across the nation at our partnered convention centers. Before, promotions were based on a subjective matrix checklist determined by management, which saw positive results, but could lead to discrepancies in skill levels. The Career Advancement Training (CAT) team sought a solution, leading to the creation of the PET program.
One success story is Kyle Rainey, a technician at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas. Kyle’s journey through the PET program exemplifies its goal to standardize and enhance promotions, ensuring all team members possess the necessary skills to advance to a higher level.
The PET program comprises of three distinct sections: a multiple-choice test, a written test, and a field exam. Participants are given study materials and other guidance to guarantee they are prepared for all aspects of the test. Kyle found the multiple-choice section to be the most challenging but was overall happy with the results. “Passing the program felt like a weight off my shoulders,” Kyle shared.
After successfully completing the examination, Kyle was soon promoted from a Tech 1 position to Tech 2. Kyle credits his general manager, Rey Crespo, for helping him in his preparation, but also for allowing Kyle the space to work independently. Rey emphasized the importance of managerial support. “My role was to encourage Kyle and answer any questions. It’s important to make technicians feel comfortable and confident,” Rey noted.
Kyle encourages other technicians at his level to pursue the PET program, emphasizing that thorough preparation can make the test easier than expected. Meanwhile, Rey suggests that all managers should be aware of the program’s process to better support their team and promote a continuous learning environment for their centers.
The PET program continues to evolve, with the committee open to feedback and suggestions. By standardizing the promotional process, the PET program aims to create a more competent and confident Smart City workforce. Kyle Rainey’s success story is just one example of the program’s positive impact on our employees’ careers, and we are excited to see how it continues to grow in the future. Congratulations Kyle!
This year, the Nevada Treasury, in collaboration with various community partners, hosted the Women + Money: The Financial Empowerment Summit. This one-day event was designed to empower women by providing crucial financial information, valuable resources, and the opportunity to connect with new mentors and friends. The summit aimed to bring women of all ages, cultures, and financial situations together to learn and grow, navigating the complexities of financial security.
Smart City’s CFO, Jacki Miller, was a key speaker at the summit, and she shared invaluable financial advice to all in attendance. We wanted to share her top five financial tips that everyone should consider!
1.
TREAT USING A CREDIT CARD AS A 30-DAY LOAN
Miller emphasized the importance of viewing credit card usage as a short-term loan. By treating it this way, you ensure that you pay off the balance in full each month, avoiding high-interest charges and maintaining good credit health.
2. MAXIMIZE YOUR 401K MATCH
If your company offers a 401K match, it’s essential to contribute enough to get the full match. According to Miller, this is essentially doubling your money for free. She advised playing the long game and maintaining contributions even when the market is down, adhering to the principle of “buy low, sell high.”
3. MONITOR SMALL EXPENSES
Small, daily purchases can add up significantly over time. Miller pointed out that regular expenditures on things like Starbucks and fast food can quickly accumulate to over $10,000 a year. Keeping an eye on these seemingly minor expenses can lead to substantial savings.
4. AUTOMATE SAVINGS
Creating a separate savings account and setting up automatic transfers from your paycheck can help you save without even noticing. Miller recommended aiming to save 3-6 months’ worth of living expenses to cover emergencies or unexpected large expenses.
5. EDUCATE YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT MONEY
Financial literacy is often lacking in primary and secondary education. Miller encouraged parents to talk to their kids about money. Opening a savings or investment account with a minimal amount can be a practical tool to teach them about financial management and the importance of saving and investing.
Jacki’s insights at the summit were a blend of practical advice and long-term strategies, aiming to empower women to take control of their financial futures. By following these tips, attendees were encouraged to make informed decisions, secure their financial well-being, and pass on this knowledge to the next generation.
EARTH DAY AND FOOD BANK WE CARE AND GIVE BACK
In line with our core business principle of We Care and Give Back, Smart City Networks continually strives to engage with our local communities beyond our dedicated service month in November. Recently, our teams in Dallas and San Diego demonstrated this commitment through participation in Earth Day and food bank activities.
The Smart City Networks Dallas Team, including General Manager Rey Crespo, Customer Service and Sales Manager Nycole Smith, and the Kay Bailey Hutchison OVG team, celebrated Earth Day by volunteering at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. Their efforts were focused on the Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden, where they spent the day assisting parents and children. The team helped manage traffic and distributed flyers, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
Meanwhile on the west coast, our General Manager at the San Diego Convention Center Matt Chavez and our Senior Vice President of Operations and Industry Relations Julia Slocombe joined forces with the San Diego Tourism Authority to support the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. Their collective efforts resulted in the sorting of 11,000 pounds of produce, which significantly aided individuals facing food insecurity in the San Diego area.
These initiatives exemplify our dedication to making a positive impact in our communities. By participating in local events and supporting essential services, Smart City Networks continues to embody the spirit of giving back and fostering community well-being. Our teams’ contributions on Earth Day and at the food bank underscore our ongoing commitment to social responsibility, and we are proud of our teams for their service!

Esteban Wences
Esteban has been the sole technical person in Sacramento since January. In addition to supporting all the events, Esteban installed the new wireless LAN controllers, helped Sodexo Live with their point-of-sale issues, assisted Santa Clara remotely and has worked multiple weekends. Along with being on-call (and not hesitating to volunteer for a 3:00am showing to work with local television for the State of Downtown event), he is also working on documenting the original exhibit space floor pockets and jacks that will lead to new infrastructure that the city will fund. Esteban is highly dedicated to help ensure all our customers have their needs exceeded.

Steven Sepulveda
During our high priority exhibitor event FETC in our North/South Building, Steven [Sepulveda] was responsible for the installation of the event in a short timeframe while mirroring another high priority event being installed in our West Building. These efforts led us to have the least amount of trouble calls for FETC in years. He also recently assisted with the Cleveland Upgrade removing outdated access points, assembling new access points antennas, and installing new Cisco access points/ antennas during a very tight window between the event activity. We thank Steven for being an amazing asset to our Smart City team.

Genesis Lozano Angeles
We are just coming off our largest electrical/plumbing event EVER in our history. We had over 630 orders! The exhibitor portion of this event was a beast and took months of planning. Genesis was instrumental in making this event a success and I could not be more proud and thankful for all the work she put into making us look as good as we did. I am very honored to have her on my team!
