Smart City's Pet Program Success Story
At Smart City Networks, we consistently look for new ways to help our employees grow and reach greater heights in their careers. In response to requests from the field, the Promotional Evaluation Testing (PET) program was developed to enhance the promotional process for our Customer Service Support Representatives (CSSRs) and Technicians across the nation at our partnered convention centers. Before, promotions were based on a subjective matrix checklist determined by management, which saw positive results, but could lead to discrepancies in skill levels. The Career Advancement Training (CAT) team sought a solution, leading to the creation of the PET program.
One success story is Kyle Rainey, a technician at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas. Kyle’s journey through the PET program exemplifies its goal to standardize and enhance promotions, ensuring all team members possess the necessary skills to advance to a higher level.
The PET program comprises of three distinct sections: a multiple-choice test, a written test, and a field exam. Participants are given study materials and other guidance to guarantee they are prepared for all aspects of the test. Kyle found the multiple-choice section to be the most challenging but was overall happy with the results. “Passing the program felt like a weight off my shoulders,” Kyle shared.
After successfully completing the examination, Kyle was soon promoted from a Tech 1 position to Tech 2. Kyle credits his general manager, Rey Crespo, for helping him in his preparation, but also for allowing Kyle the space to work independently. Rey emphasized the importance of managerial support. “My role was to encourage Kyle and answer any questions. It’s important to make technicians feel comfortable and confident,” Rey noted.
Kyle encourages other technicians at his level to pursue the PET program, emphasizing that thorough preparation can make the test easier than expected. Meanwhile, Rey suggests that all managers should be aware of the program’s process to better support their team and promote a continuous learning environment for their centers.
The PET program continues to evolve, with the committee open to feedback and suggestions. By standardizing the promotional process, the PET program aims to create a more competent and confident Smart City workforce. Kyle Rainey’s success story is just one example of the program’s positive impact on our employees’ careers, and we are excited to see how it continues to grow in the future. Congratulations Kyle!
