WHERE AT THE TOP? THE VERY TOP!

From the Desk of the

President

We Care and Give Back!

Among our core principles, “We Care and Give Back” stands as one of Smart City’s most important. It represents our commitment to service, and a belief that extends beyond words to tangible actions. It’s not enough to just care, but rather, we believe in taking meaningful steps to give back, especially when we are in such a fortunate position to do so.

MARK HALEY President Smart City Networks

We Care 2

That is why we push our local teams throughout our partnered convention centers to get out in their communities and make a difference. Though, “push” is a strong word. Rather, we encourage them to find ways to give back to their communities, and all of them jump at the opportunity to serve. We have an incredible team of compassionate, dedicated individuals who enjoy helping others. They wouldn’t be working for Smart City if they didn’t. Their passion for lending a helping hand has made our 2023 Month of Service an absolute success, and you can see Smart City’s influence across the country. From the Ronald McDonald House in Seattle to the Salvation Army in Orlando, from food banks in Honolulu to shoe sorting in Charlotte, to all the wonderful volunteer opportunities we found near our corporate headquarters in Las Vegas, all Smart City team members demonstrated how much they truly care while giving back. In this latest Pinnacle issue, you will see examples of “We Care and Give Back” in action, and I thank all our centers for leading the charge during our annual Month of Service! But that’s not all the end of the year brings. As we say farewell to 2023 and set our sights to 2024, I’m struck by all we have accomplished this quarter. Within this latest Pinnacle issue, you’ll see our most recent accomplishments, from our presence at IAEE’s Expo! Expo!, to celebrating remarkable individuals like Tammy Clark (a finalist in Nevada’s 2023 Hospitality Heroes), to the implementation of cutting-edge network upgrades at a few of our partnered convention centers. Throughout it all, we remain committed to providing top-notch technological solutions for some of the most diverse events in the nation, ranging from Metallica Concerts to Art Basel. As I said, it has been an amazing year for Smart City. Thank you to everyone who contributed to our latest Pinnacle issue, and here’s to an incredible 2024!

A MAJOR EMPLOYEE MILESTONE Smart City’s team at the Anaheim Convention Center (ACC) recently celebrated a major milestone for one of our longest-tenured team members. Dave Nagel, Operations Manager at ACC, commemorated his impressive 35th anniversary with Smart City this quarter, and the local Anaheim team honored that achievement with a special dinner. Dave has been instrumental in the success of our operations in Anaheim, and we thank him for everything he has done for our company! His dedication and expertise have contributed greatly to the excellence and reliability of our services in Anaheim.

THE PURR-FECT PUMPKIN! This Halloween, the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) embraced the spooky season with a series of different fallrelated team building events, which prompted an enthusiastic involvement from the local Smart City team. One activity was a traditional pumpkin carving contest, and while our team showcased their creativity, it was Keely McGaffin, our Customer Sales & Service Manager at LACC, who won third place with her cat-themed pumpkin! It was Purr-fect! Other festivities included a door-decoration contest that brought out the playful spirit in everyone. The camaraderie and energy during these events highlighted the strong bonds and collaborative atmosphere within our Smart City family at LACC, and we look forward to more of these events in the future. Special thanks to the building for putting on such amazing activities!

EARVIN CLAROS At Smart City, one of our core business principles has always been “It’s the People,” and we strive to highlight our wonderful team whenever possible. For this quarter’s Smart City Spotlight we wanted to shine the spotlight on the personal and professional accomplishments of two team members who always go above and beyond. This is your spotlight!

Earvin Claros is a Technician at our Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC). He began working with our company in August of 2021 and his exceptional work ethic has always been admirable. Among his impressive achievements, one standout milestone is Earvin’s recent recognition as Smart City’s Employee of the Month. We caught up with Earvin to discuss his experiences and journey with Smart City, as well as his time contributing to the success at LACC.

Check out our blog to read the full Spotlight! CLICK HERE

WHAT FIRST DREW YOU TO SMART CITY? I got presented with the opportunity from a former employee and he started talking to me about the responsibilities and what the position involves. WHAT DOES YOUR JOB ENTAIL? On a show-to-show basis we prepare our supplies which consist of patch cables, tape, snips and crimps. Our customer service team provides us with floor plans for exhibitors and we set out and run internet lines according to their plans. We configure each line to their associated VLAN and once our shows are installed, we are on standby for trouble calls.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR CONVENTION CENTER AND ABOUT SMART CITY? Every employee here at the convention center is welcoming and extremely kind. What I like most about Smart City is the amount of knowledge you gain through every event you work. There is always room to improve in this field of work, and everyone is willing to work with me and teach me. HAVE THERE BEEN ANY INSTANCES YOU CAN THINK OF WHERE YOU HAVE USED ONE OF OUR 10 BUSINESS PRINCIPLES IN THE WORKPLACE? Business principle #9 (Think Fast, Move Fast) is one that we implement on our day-to-day basis here at Smart City. Whether we are working directly with exhibitors trying to fix an issue or working with our in-house tenants, the sooner we get people up and running, the happier our customers are. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO NEW HIRES WHO ARE STARTING WITH SMART CITY? You can never go wrong with asking questions about a particular topic in this field. People here are more than willing to teach others more in detail about what and how we do things. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME! TO WRAP UP, WHAT IS SOMETHING FUN THAT PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU? I have traveled to Europe a couple times and my favorite city I have visited has to be Amsterdam.

IT’S THE PEOPLE

MADISON GRIMES Madison Grimes is our Event Coordinator at the Tampa Convention Center (TCC), she handles all Show Management and Exhibitor orders, as well as works to make sure the local team is prepared for all upcoming events. Recently, Madison ran the 2023 TCS New York City Marathon, a fantastic accomplishment. We talked with Madison about the Marathon and her prep work. RUNNING A MARATHON IS EXCITING! WHAT INSPIRED YOU? I have been a runner for almost 9 years now, and running gives me such peace of mind and a sense of accomplishment. I had accomplished a couple of half marathons and I wanted to see if I was able to push myself and see if I could do it, as well as become the less than 1% of people who can do that. HOW DID YOU PREPARE MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY? I used the Nike Training App with their marathon plan to help train and prep, along with watching/reading ever tips and tricks I could on preparing, how to run, gear to get, how to fuel properly, etc. For mental prep – a really good playlist was key! WERE THERE ANY MEMORABLE MOMENTS THAT YOU CAN RECALL? The amount of people that lined up to cheer on every single runner. It blew my mind how much love and support that was given! The views were absolutely beautiful as well! When you entered a new borough, it was fun with signs like “Welcome to Brooklyn!!”

Check out our blog to read the full Spotlight! CLICK HERE

HOW HAS RUNNING A MARATHON IMPACTED YOUR LIFE, EITHER PERSONALLY OR PROFESSIONALLY? The amount of time-management and dedication to training and balancing that with your life. It has helped show how much you really can get done in a day when you want something so bad. I would run prior to my work day, and I learned doing that I have a way more productive day, and it will boost your confidence in yourself. DID YOU HAVE ANY SUPPORT FROM FRIENDS, FAMILY, COWORKERS, FELLOW RUNNERS, ETC.? My family was my biggest support, my dad would take my kids on the weekends so I can get my long runs done. Then my family that lived in New York created a cheer squad, meeting me at mile 12 and mile 24 with signs and snacks. My boyfriend and my friends would constantly cheer me on, and everyone was able to track me while running the marathon and send me text messages. Coworkers would ask me about my run, or cheer me on when they saw me running on the riverwalk, I got a handful of emails everyone cheering me on. It was such a great feeling! POST-MARATHON, HOW DID YOU CELEBRATE OR UNWIND? They have you walk 2 miles after you cross the finish line before you are able to get to family or friends (which was harder then the marathon in my opinion) and my cousins helped us shuffle up and down subway stairs - we celebrated with a delicious pizza dinner, a beer and then I fell asleep pretty fast. DO YOU HAVE ANY MORE ASPIRATIONS IN TERMS OF RUNNING GOALS? I want to run an ultra-marathon! I would love to train for a 50k next year which is 31 miles, and then keep seeing how far I can go after that! © 2023 Smart City Networks. All Rights Reserved.

We Care

Smart City’s Month of Service stands as company-wide initiative, empowering our teams in partnered convention centers to contribute meaningfully to their local communities. This wonderful opportunity reflects Smart City’s overall commitment to community service. We are grateful for the chance to make a difference and are thankful to all our team members who stepped up throughout the month of November.

Smart City’s team at the Colorado Convention Center volunteered at A Precious Child, where they sorted, sized, and restocked 1,275 pounds of donations!

Our Senior Vice President of Operations and Industry Relations, Julia Slocombe, took a hands-on approach with Hands on San Diego, a program where volunteers can organize local thrift store donations. Julia volunteered at Auntie Helen’s, which serves individuals with low incomes or with underlying health conditions such as HIV/AIDS.

Santa Clara’s Smart City We Care team honors the spirit of We Care and Give Back all year long. The team SCCC chooses to volunteer with The Salvation Army Senior Center every Friday, where they work at the front desk and assist with administrative tasks. Once again, The Seattle Convention Center Smart City team dedicated their time to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House. This year was extra special as the team had a chance to invite their significant others to volunteer as well! We’re grateful for the opportunity to keep contributing to this wonderful organization.

Last year, the Smart City Networks Hawaii team participated in a day of service at The Pantry in Honolulu. Smart City’s local teams across our partnered convention centers did tremendous work in their communities, but it was important for our Las Vegas corporate office to get into the spirit of service as well! Take a look at a few of our corporate volunteer events to see how Smart City made an impact in Las Vegas. For the last five years, our wonderful Human Resources and Recruiting Manager, Cara Kroenke, has been partnering with HELP of Southern Nevada by adopting low-income children and purchasing their holiday presents. Our team took a trip to Target to purchase gifts, and then returned to our office to wrap them. It was an incredibly rewarding experience and a way to unite our office for a wonderful cause. Thank you to all our volunteers and thank you to Cara for always working hard to put this event on for our office! The Smart City team had two corporate volunteering events that took place around the city of Las Vegas. The first was volunteering at the Truth Christian Ministries International (TCMI) Drive-Up Food Pantry. Our team arrived early to pack, sort, and distribute food for over 400 cars! The other event involved packing up Thanksgiving meal bags for the Henderson Equality Center. We extend our sincerest gratitude to our team who arrived ready to make a difference in their Las Vegas community! Our Month of Service is not just focused on November! Earlier this year, our corporate office built at-home hygiene kits for the Clean the World organization, which gives the homeless population access to proper sanitary hand-washing supplies. It was wonderful seeing our office come together one morning to make these kits for our local community, and we once again thank all our team members who participated! SMART CITY MAKES AN IMPACT AT EXPO! EXPO! The International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE) held their annual Expo! Expo! event at Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas (KBHCCD) in December, and Smart City was proud to participate! This gathering included trade show and exhibition managers from around the world who met to discuss the latest industry trends. Smart City provided complimentary Wi-Fi for the event, and overall had a major presence on the show floor. Our booth attracted a steady flow of visitors, fueled by the buzz surrounding Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics. Partnering with Unified Command, Smart City installed cameras inside our booth, as well as at the entrance of the convention center hall. These cameras fed a local server, generating valuable analytics and event insights which were displayed in real-time on a dashboard inside Smart City’s booth. The analytics server meticulously tracked attendee movement through predetermined zones set up before the start of the event, offering accurate insights into attendee hall entries and exits, Smart City booth visits, visit durations, and overall foot traffic. Leveraging cutting-edge AI capabilities, the server scanned an extensive image database of over 800,000 images to identify visitor demographics and provide detailed metrics, such as peak attendance times and average dwell times. This comprehensive data provided insights into peak activity hours and average visitor duration within our booth. Furthermore, the platform is equipped with behavioral analytics, including in-depth analysis of visitors’ moods, allowing for a stronger understanding of attendee engagement. In an industry where data reigns supreme, this new offering empowers our clients to evaluate event success, identify areas for enhancement, and optimize resource allocation to ensure overall success and growth. At Expo! Expo!, Smart City had the privilege to unveil game-changing and groundbreaking technological solutions, marking another significant step in redefining the customer experience through innovation within the event industry.

PEDALING WITH PURPOSE! Smart City Networks team members from George R. Brown (GRB) and NRG Park volunteered to join dozens of other organizations at the GRB to build bicycles benefitting Child Advocates at the 21st Annual Hotel & Lodging Association of Greater Houston Bike Build event. The bike build program has been held in the GRB since 2004 and has donated over 1,250 bikes and helmets to children throughout the Houston Community. Their collective effort not only highlights our dedication to community involvement, but also showcases the compassion that define our team members throughout the Houston area.

ART BASEL 2023

Art Basel returned to the Miami Beach Convention Center in December for its 21st edition, transforming the area into a hub of creativity and cultural immersion. Amidst the colorful and vibrant displays, Smart City Networks played a pivotal role as its IT and telecommunications service provider, ensuring connectivity throughout the event. Understanding the show’s operational needs, Smart City installed over 30 phone lines over the course of Art Basel’s extensive move-in/move-out schedule, which spanned nearly a month. Art Basel’s construction crew erected walls, doors, and multiple diverse spaces, reshaping the convention center’s layout, and Smart City strategically dropped cables to accommodate the evolution of the space. Smart City’s collaborative approach during set-up helped allow Art Basel to focus on highlighting emerging trends, like the integration of drones. The drones offered art enthusiasts a bird’s eye view tour, providing a new, unique perspective for the event. Overall, it was another successful Art Basel!

Jacoby’s Jabber

DON’T TOUCH That Dial...

One of my job functions is essentially asking my coworkers to be part of silly projects, and although I absolutely love making content, I am always self-conscious about the inconvenience. I understand that everyone within our company has a specific job to do, and sometimes having an annoying Marketing guy spamming your email, asking you to show up and do a dance on camera might not be the thing you want to deal with first thing on a Monday morning. But this last quarter really opened my eyes to the teamwork and camaraderie that Smart City shares, both at corporate and in our field. There was a specific video challenge that the Marketing Department came up with for this year’s General Manager Meeting in Charlotte and it was simply to recreate the opening of a television show. We thought that it was something fun, could include a lot of people, and provided enough variety where teams weren’t all doing the same thing. And we got some amazing submissions that truly came out of left field. We learned Anaheim is part of the Twilight Zone, we saw the Dallas Team is full of sharks, we saw a little TOO MUCH of Arnold Chavez, we witnessed the birth of Tim Overall: Rapper Extraordinaire, and we learned to never trust Chris Wharry when he says he isn’t submitting a video! It was a great showcase for teamwork! But on top of all the field submissions, for me the best part was the corporate side of things. I had the privilege of working with almost every corporate department and shooting quirky, fun openings with them. And overall, I was surprised by everyone’s level of participation. I thought Accounting wouldn’t show up for our Friends opening, and yet there they all were, dressed exactly how I asked them to be, holding their best umbrellas. I thought Paul Russell and Aaron Squires would be too busy crunching numbers to recreate Suits, and yet they suited up like champs. I thought the Customer Service team would think the Peacemaker dance was ridiculous and say no… and although it took A LOT of convincing, I think everyone had fun that day. And I thought there was no way Mark Haley would be our Tony Soprano, but he showed up with his own cigar ready to go. So for this month’s Jabber, I just wanted to thank everyone who always goes along with our ideas! We appreciate this team!

Smart City would like to congratulate the Charlotte Convention Center (CCC) for being awarded the prestigious Gold LEED Certification. The convention center is the first existing city-owned building to achieve LEED Gold Certification. MIAMI BEACH WINS PROJECT OF THE YEAR! The Miami Beach Convention Center (MBCC) was recently awarded the 2023 Project of the Year Vision Award by the 15th Annual Urban Land Institute Southeast Florida/Caribbean Chapter for their massive renovation and expansion project. The extensive $640 million project has transformed the facility into a lush 25-acre site and 1.4 million sq. foot building that celebrates its position as the civic and cultural heart of Miami Beach. Smart City is honored to be partnered with such a beautiful and vital convention center and we congratulate MBCC on their award!

WEST COAST FIBER TRAINING The Anaheim Convention Center hosted a Corning fiber optic training session for Long Beach, Los Angeles, and Anaheim team members this quarter. Roy Otterson, a Technical Field Support Specialist with Corning, and a former Vista-United Telecommunications team member, trained attendees on fiber history, types, applications, handling and testing and more. Attendees included Frank Cruz and Eleazar Martinez (Long Beach), Adolfo Ramirez, Earvin Claros, Danielle Castillo, David Daumit, Keely McGaffin and Henry De La Rosa (Los Angeles), and Jacob Huerta, Bill Heyer, Marco Fierro, Kevin Romero, Bryan Flores and Josh Poston (Anaheim). Special thanks to Ken Schmidt, our director of Regional Operations – Southwest, for arranging this on-site training for our teams.

REAL WIRE WIZARDS! At Smart City, we constantly look to enhance and improve our networks to deliver the best technological solutions to our clients. This quarter saw the continuation of our network upgrade at I-X Center and welcomed guests including Minneapolis Convention Center General Manager Brian Clear, and our Director of Regional Operations in the Midwest, Chris Pendleton, who stopped by to lend a helping hand. On top of that work, a new network upgrade began and finished at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas. Our local team, lead by General Manager Rey Crespo, worked tremendously hard to inventory, remove, and install over 120 network devices throughout the KBHCCD. The core gear cutover took the Dallas team 14 non-stop hours of work. This one night/day included removing and installing two core distribution switches, wireless controllers, firewall, and rewriting over 180 Fiber connections. Smart City would like to especially thank our team members, Walter Quintanilla, Nycole Smith, Kennth Nguyen, and Kyle Rainey for all their commitment and dedication to getting this job complete in a timely manner! © 2023 Smart City Networks.
