REC BOARD NEWS

Hello Friends and Neighbors,

It is an honor and a privilege to serve on this Board and be a part of such an awesome team of employees, vendors, and of course, our District Manager, Joe Mallen. Thanks to everyone’s hard work and dedication, we have been able to make much needed repairs, upgrades and complete the beautification of our Main Clubhouse and Satellites, all while lowering costs and increasing revenues.

I am very proud of all we have achieved and am very excited about the grand re-opening of our newly updated and modernized theater which took place on September 27th, with the fabulous Almighty Queen Tribute Band.. We were also honored by City of Sunrise Chamber of Commerce and City Officials with the ribbon cutting ceremony that took place at the theater doors just before the GRAND REOPENING.

Our beautiful theater is being re-branded and promoted as the ‘SUNRISE EPIC THEATER’. We are letting all music and arts enthusiasts from around the world know that this is the ‘Go To Venue’ in Broward County. Since rebranding, the community has become aware that the theater is open to the public. This is a result of the help we are receiving from advertising partners. It has enabled us to capture a whole new audience, thus increasing revenues. With the valued support of our community, we are looking forward to a productive season and even greater future.

DISTRICT NEWS

Dear Residents,

With hurricane season (hopefully) behind us, we can enjoy the best that Florida has to offer. I want to welcome back any snowbirds that have made the journey here. I am sure you’ll notice many improvements in the Clubhouse and its amenities.

For Residents living in Inc. 1, (Bldg.’s 155-174), their Campbell Property office space has moved from the main Clubhouse to Satellite 2. Anyone wanting to meet with their property manager, Diego Ruiz, can now go to Satellite 2, which should be more convenient.

Recreation District Manager

We are working with Juda-Eskew to resolve the situation with the Coupon Books. Our goal is to re-instate them after the 1st of the year. We would prefer to “go green” and eliminate the need for paper. For November and December, Residents have options to pay their Rec Fees:

• They can enroll in Automatic Debit (ACH) and have their fees automatically withdrawn from their account. (Best option-never late)

• They can make out a check (including Name, Address and Account # if they have it) and drop it off in the “black drop box” next to our Box Office in the main Clubhouse. Juda-Eskew picks these up on Tuesday & Thursday mornings.

• They can also mail their checks directly to Juda-Eskew. (This does run the risk of being late due to postal delays)

The golf course greens have been successfully replaced. Our landscapers are tending to the greens helping them take root and flourish. We are still hopeful that we will be able to re-open the course in early November.

While some of the improvements are obvious, many things go on behind the scenes to ensure your current and future enjoyment of the Recreation District. Should you have any questions, concerns or just want to know more, please don’t hesitate to stop by my office and introduce yourself.

The First One?

The “first” Thanksgiving wasn’t a single event, but several early celebrations, including one in Virginia in 1619 and another in Plymouth in 1621, which is more famously remembered. The 1621 feast was a three-day harvest festival that didn’t feature turkey or mashed potatoes but likely included venison, wild fowl, lobster, and seafood. Additionally, it was a somber event for the Pilgrims, who had lost many of their people that year.

What was the first Thanksgiving like?

It wasn’t the first: English settlers held a Thanksgiving in Virginia in 1619. The 1621 celebration in Plymouth is often mistakenly called the “first.”

And the menu was different: There was no turkey, pumpkin pie, or mashed potatoes. Instead, the feast likely included venison (brought by the Wampanoag), wild fowl, lobster, fish, and seafood.

It was a harvest feast: The 1621 event was a three-day harvest festival to celebrate a successful harvest. The Wampanoag were invited after the Pilgrims shot off their guns to celebrate, causing the Wampanoag to prepare for battle, which they then joined.

The Pilgrims were somber: For the Pilgrims, it was also a somber event, as they had lost half of their people that year.

What were some other myths about the first Thanksgiving?

Costumes were different: The popular images of Pilgrims in black and white clothing with silver buckles and Native Americans in headdresses are inaccurate; the Puritans wore colorful clothes and had no shoe buckles. No women: Only five women were present, due to the high death rate in their first year in America.

No pie: Pies were not on the menu because they did not have ovens and the ingredients for pie, like flour and sugar, were not available at the time.

What is the historical context of Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving was not a holiday: For the Pilgrims, Thanksgiving was a religious event, but the Pilgrims did not call it Thanksgiving, and it wasn’t a national holiday until much later.

National holiday: Thanksgiving was finally established as a national holiday by Abraham Lincoln in 1863, following a campaign by Sarah Josepha Hale, the author of “Mary Had a Little Lamb.”

HEALTH NEWS

Natural Treatments for Glaucoma

Doctors typically prescribe eye drops for glaucoma. This is the most common and effective treatment for the condition. Doctors may also recommend laser treatment or surgery. Experts do not recommend natural remedies as the sole treatment for glaucoma, but some may be helpful alongside medical treatment.

Diet for glaucoma

Eating a healthy, balanced diet high in certain vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats may have protective effects against glaucoma. The Glaucoma Research Foundation says that although diet cannot cure or prevent glaucoma, the following may be beneficial:

Fruits and vegetables: Some fruits and vegetables contain vitamins A and C, lutein, and zeaxanthin. These may help protect the optic nerve and eye tissues from damage due to oxidative stress.

Leafy greens: Vegetables such as kale and spinach may have protective effects against developing glaucoma. They may also reduce inflammation and the risk of macular degeneration.

Nuts and seeds: Certain nuts and seeds, such as almonds and sunflower seeds, are high in vitamin E, which helps protect against the breakdown of tissues in the retina.

Fish: Fish such as salmon and tuna are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which may help reduce eye pressure due to glaucoma. Magnesium: Magnesium is present in foods such as bananas, avocado, and black beans. As a result, these foods may help improve blood flow to the eyes and protect cells in the retina. Dark chocolate: Dark chocolate, which contains flavanols, may improve blood flow to the eyes.

Tea: Hot tea, consumed at least once per day, may link to a reduced risk of developing glaucoma.

Lifestyle measures

Lifestyle measures that may help a person manage glaucoma include the following:

Getting regular exercise: Moderate exercise, such as brisk walking or swimming, may help reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) and improve overall eye health and vision.

Managing stress: Stress may increase IOP and worsen glaucoma, so stress management is important. Suggestions to try include meditation, deep breathing, and mindfulness. Yoga can also be beneficial, but people should avoid positioning the head below the heart.

Avoiding smoking: Smoking may link to a faster progression of glaucoma and increased IOP.

Adjusting sleeping position: Lying on the back, face up, may increase IOP. Elevating the head by 20 to 30 degrees may help.

Herbal supplements

Studies have investigated many herbal supplements for their potential benefits for glaucoma, but there is no clinical evidence that they help. They include the following.

• Ginkgo biloba

• Bilberry

• Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi derivatives

• Saffron

• Ribes nigrum L (blackcurrant)

Talk with a doctor before starting any natural treatments for glaucoma, as some herbal remedies or alternative therapies may interact with medications or certain health conditions.
