Hello Residents,

It’s that time of the year when we analyze our mid-year standing and utilize the information to prepare a strong fiscal year budget. Successful mid-year financial management is crucial for any organization aiming to maintain fiscal health and achieve its long term goals. One of the key indicators of success in this area is staying under budget, which allows for flexibility in financial planning and ensures resources are used efficiently. At the Recreation District, we continue to aim for these achievements.

By closely monitoring expenditures and identifying any unnecessary costs, we can cushion our budget against unexpected expenses, paving the way for more strategic investments. Having a successful audit also plays an integral role in mid-year financial success. A thorough and transparent audit process not only validates the accuracy of financial statements but also builds credibility with our Owners. We are pleased to announce that once again, we have had a successful audit.

E

ffective mid-year financial management involves staying under budget, passing audits with flying colors, and meticulously planning for the future. These components work together to create a strong financial foundation, ensuring not just stability, but also the potential for growth and ensuring the Board’s fiduciary commitment to our wonderful community.

REC BOARD NEWS DISTRICT NEWS

Dear Residents,

Hurricane season is upon us and in preparation for that we are having the trees around the property trimmed back so they don’t become a hazard during a storm. We’ve also scheduled the cleanout of our stormwater catch basins, so if we do get a powerful storm the water has somewhere to go.

The underground irrigation leak (behind Hole #1 tee box) has been resolved. This area should dry up and we can begin to restore the sod. Hopefully this fix will last for a while.

Our Iguana specialist continues to safely and humanly remove over 20 iguanas per visit. That’s down from the 40 he used to eliminate when we first started the program. Spring is the time they lay their eggs and we’re working to reduce the number of mature adults so that egg production falls to a manageable level.

Recreation District Manager

Sunshine Services Unlimited has been awarded, by the Rec Board, the job of sealing our parking lot. Despite the parking lot looking good right now, this procedure will help extend the life of the asphalt for many years. They are in the permitting stage right now with the City. Pending approval, they should be able to start in late June. This will necessitate temporary closure of the parking lot, but only for a few hours at a time. We’ll do it in phases, and let Residents know ahead of time where to park and when.

Pickleball has become so popular that we’ve decided to install permanent pickleball nets and dedicate one of the three tennis courts to that activity.

Finally, our artist Skyler has been busy painting the planters around the pool deck as well as some exterior walls. We’ve received many compliments on her work, and we hope Residents enjoy their refreshed surroundings.

THE AMERICAN FLAG

Flag Day is a holiday celebrated on June 14 in the United States. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The Flag Resolution stated “That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.

During the American Revolutionary War, the Congress decided that the country needed a flag to represent the united colonies. On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a Flag Resolution. This day is still celebrated as Flag Day in the United States.

The resolution said that the United States Flag would have 13 red and white alternating stripes and that there would be a blue area with 13 white stars. They didn’t give an exact description of the flag and there were several different versions.

Did Betsy Ross sew the first flag?

Legend has it that seamstress Betsy Ross sewed the first American Flag from a sketch that George Washington gave her. No one is sure if this story is fact or just a myth, but it makes for a good story. The flag has changed over the years. Here is the history of changes:

January 13, 1794 - The number of stars and stripes was each changed to 15.

April 4, 1818 - Changed the number of stripes back to 13 and allowed for one star for each state.

June 24, 1912 - Officially gave the proportions of the flag as well as the arrangement of the stars. The stars would be in six horizontal rows of eight each with a single point of each star to be pointing upward.

January 3, 1959 - Changed the star pattern to seven rows of seven stars each, staggered horizontally and vertically. August 21, 1959 - Changed the star pattern again to nine rows of stars staggered horizontally and eleven rows of stars staggered vertically.

Details of the United States Flag

The official flag is to be 1.9 times as long as it’s width. It has thirteen red and white alternating stripes with a red stripe on the top and on the bottom. The blue part in the upper left is called the Union. The Union is to be 7 stripes tall. There are 50 white stars in the Union representing the 50 states. They are in 11 staggered horizontal rows of 5 and 6 stars.

What are the names of the flag?

The US flag has several nicknames. The most popular ones include the Star Spangled Banner, the Stars and Stripes, and Old Glory.

Honor the Flag

The United States flag is a symbol of our freedom. Many men and women have died over the years to preserve our freedom and the flag represents them as well. There are rules of flag etiquette some of which include never letting the flag touch the ground, how and where it should be displayed, and that it should be lit up if flown at night.

Yoga For Arthritis

If you are struggling with arthritis, yoga is an evidence-based, mind-body practice that is recommended by the Arthritis Foundation, American College of Rheumatology and the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology. How you approach it will determine whether it works for you.

Steffany Moonaz, professor of clinical and health services research and research director at Southern California University, says there are over 100 diagnoses under the umbrella of arthritis, and they can generally fall under two categories:

Degenerative arthritis includes osteoarthritis, which is the most common form of arthritis, and is primarily caused by wear and tear on the joints. Symptoms include pain, swelling and stiffness. Systemic forms of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and juvenile idiopathic arthritis are less common. These occur when the immune system misidentifies tissue as something foreign in the body, and it attacks the tissue which has a cascade effect on the entire body. Beyond pain, swelling and stiffness in the joint, someone with systemic arthritis may experience fatigue, brain fog, fever and chills.

According to Moonaz, you cannot cure or reverse arthritis, but you can possibly delay onset of degenerative arthritis by maintaining strength in the muscles around the joint.

Benefits of Yoga for Arthritis

Moonaz says that yoga provides a unique mind-body practice to attend to all aspects of arthritis symptoms. It is most effective when it is tailored to balance muscle groups, which is important because if one muscle group is stronger than its counter group, it will affect the structure of the joint and as a result, create more degradation. Alignment, posture and repetition all affect how a joint wears, and it is important to balance activity and rest. Yoga can have a variety of benefits for arthritis:

• Physical benefits

• Energy benefits

• Mental health benefits

Physical benefits

Yoga is a great way to safely develop strength, which is critical to slow or prevent the progression of arthritis by stabilizing and strengthening the muscles around the affected joint. Being strong will also help you maintain physical function if you have arthritis. If you practice yoga effectively, you will maintain flexibility, range of motion or slow loss of mobility. Moving the joint around within your range of motion improves joint mobilization and lubricates certain joints with synovial fluid, which reduces stiffness.

By mindfully working on your coordination in yoga, you can reduce risk of falls and fear of falling. The impact of falls is higher for those with joint disease, and fear of falling prevents people from going out and doing more things can contribute to loss of function.

Energy benefits

Fatigue is a very common symptom, especially for systemic forms of arthritis. Yoga helps to conserve energy and mindfulness helps you to make better decisions in putting your energy towards the things that matter most to you.

Mental health benefits

A 2019 study found that adding yoga to standard treatment for rheumatoid arthritis lowered inflammation, severity of symptoms and a reduction of depression.

A yoga practice helps you become aware that your arthritis symptoms fluctuate, and over time, you shift your mental framing to focus on what you can do and let go of what you can’t for a minute.
