REC BOARD NEWS

Hello Residents,

We want the Clubhouse and amenities to be enjoyable for everyone, whether they live here or not. Most residents are courteous and respectful during their visits. However, it might be useful to revisit some “housekeeping” guidelines while here at the Clubhouse.

The Coffee & Water Hospitality Station has been a big hit with everyone. We ask that residents and guests to please clean up after themselves. We often find sugar and coffee creamer spilled on the counter, as well as coffee spilled on the floor. This spoils the next visitor’s experience.

We are happy that visitors seem to enjoy the new lobby furniture and the patio furniture poolside. We ask that when visitors get up and leave, they return the furniture to its proper location and lower the sun umbrellas.

Visitors LOVE muffin day! So, we ask that residents and guests limit one item per person, so we have enough for everyone to enjoy. This has become so challenging that we are now having Security hand out the muffins to control the consumption.

Speaking of Security, please understand they have a tough job to do. We ask residents and guests to treat them with respect and courtesy. If they ask you for ID, please provide it. They are here to keep the Clubhouse safe and secure — please don’t antagonize them!

Entering through the Golf office to avoid Security will not be tolerated. Everyone wanting access to the Clubhouse MUST enter through the front doors and present their ID to Security. Golfers can access the locker room restrooms and water fountain through the exterior doors. Everyone else needs to go through Security up front.

Our Sunrise Lakes Phase IV clubhouse is a special place that is to be enjoyed by all. Please follow the simple rules stated above so residents and guests will have a terrific experience here. Residents may contact us at the Recreation District through our website, sl4recdistrict.com, for issues involving the Rec District.

Thank you...

National Honey Month

Honey — it’s a sweet and delicious substance that adds great flavor to morning toast, creates decadent desserts, and even packs some serious nutritional benefits. This September, during National Honey Month, let’s remember these little dynamos working hard to pollenate our plants and crops and try to do everything we can to preserve their habitats.

HEALTH NEWS

Preventing Hearing Loss

If you don’t have hearing loss, you likely know someone who does. According to the World Health Organization, 1.5 billion people (or 20% of the entire global population) have hearing loss. But no one should have to live with untreated hearing loss—it can lead to vertigo and balance problems, depression, and even dementia. With hearing loss, as with many conditions, prevention is key.

How to prevent hearing loss

Though hearing loss is common, it isn’t unavoidable. And there are ways you can lower your risk. For one, protect your hearing by knowing what a “safe” noise level is. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, sounds below 70 A-weighted decibels (dBA) are safe. A normal conversation between friends is likely between 60–70 dBA. Any sounds above 85 dBA, like sirens, music on the loudest volume, and fireworks, can damage your hearing.

Tips to prevent hearing loss

• Use hearing protection devices around loud sounds

• Limit the amount of time you are exposed to sounds above 85 dBA when possible.

• Insert earplugs safely and be extra careful when cleaning in and around your ears—most audiologists do not recommend Q-Tips.

• Make an appointment with your primary care doctor or audiologist (hearing specialist) if you experience any amount of hearing loss. Getting help right away can prevent further damage.

• If you do wear hearing aids, experts say it’s important to wear them regularly.

Types of hearing loss

There are three types of hearing loss: sensorineural, conductive, and mixed hearing loss —

Sensorineural

This is the most common type of hearing loss. It can be caused by aging, exposure to loud noise, injury, disease, certain drugs, or an inherited condition. Noise-induced hearing loss is considered sensorineural. People who frequently attend rowdy sporting events or work regularly with loud power tools may be at risk of noise-induced hearing loss. Age-related hearing loss, also called presbycusis, is the hearing loss we experience slowly over time. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (also called rapid sensorineural hearing loss) is when you experience a loss of hearing instantly or very quickly over a few days. You must speak to a doctor if this happens—the longer you wait, the less likely it is to be treated successfully.

Conductive

This type of hearing loss occurs when your ear is blocked or injured. Something as simple as having wax removed by an audiologist during a doctor’s appointment can help.

Mixed hearing loss

This occurs when you have a combination of sensorineural and conductive hearing loss. For example, you may have hearing loss brought on by age and a buildup of ear wax.

How often should I get my hearing tested?

If you’re experiencing no symptoms, you should get your hearing tested once per year. Otolaryngologists, also called ear, nose, and throat doctors (or ENTs), and audiologists can treat hearing loss. If you have any concerns about your hearing, see your doctor right away.
