REC BOARD NEWS
Hello Friends and Neighbors,
I am Dr. Luis Dilone. I sit on the Rec Board of Supervisors. As a dedicated physician I make it my responsibility to emphasize the importance of both physical well-being and mental health to my patients. I believe that true health encompasses both aspects and that taking care of ourselves holistically is essential.
At the clubhouse, we are proud to offer a wide range of amenities designed to support our owners in maintaining their mental and physical health. Our facility features various exercise classes, including Zumba and Yoga, to cater to different fitness preferences. Additionally, we have an on-site trainer who also is a nutritionist available twice a week, offering free nutritional advice and guidance on the proper use of our gym equipment.
For those who prefer more sedentary activities, we provide engaging arts and crafts classes led by Nancy Lemaroux and Luz Elena Cardona These classes not only allow participants to unleash their creativity—be it creating beautiful beaded bracelets or festive snowman Christmas wreaths—but also foster social connections as owners engage in conversations with their neighbors. To ensure accessibility, we even provide transportation to and from the clubhouse, making it easier for everyone to take advantage of our offerings.
In summary, at the clubhouse, we are committed to creating programs that prioritize your well-being. We encourage you to take advantage of the wonderful healthy amenities we offer and join us on your journey to a healthier New Year!

DISTRICT NEWS
Dear Residents,
We get calls everyday from Residents about problems they are experiencing in their units. Problems range from roof leaks, air conditioning, water & plumbing issues, electrical problems, mold, noisy neighbors, parking lot issues, you name it! Unfortunately, we at the Recreation District are not in a position to help with any of this.
Owners who have concerns with their individual units need to work with their HOA’s, and their property managers. Residents have resources. They can contact their Bldg. Captain for direction or their HOA Board members or their property manager. These people can assist Residents in getting problems solved.
Joseph Mallen SLP4 Recreation District Manager
Campbell Management oversees Inc. 1 and Inc. 3, and each Inc. has its own property manager with offices in Tamarac. For convenience, Inc. 1 maintains an office right here in Phase 4 at Satellite 2. Diego Ruiz is available Monday-Friday to Inc.1 Residents that need assistance with problems in their unit. Inc. 2 is overseen by Sunrise Management with offices in Plantation and Jay Pietrafetta is their property manager.
We know it’s very frustrating when Owners can’t get anyone to acknowledge their concerns, and we are always here to listen. But if Residents want action, they have to work with the people that can help them.
The golf course greens have been successfully replaced and we were able to re-open the golf course as planned on November 4. You may notice some seams and brown spots but our landscapers are tending to the greens helping them to flourish. We hope our golfers and Residents enjoy the improvement.
While some of the improvements are obvious, many things go on behind the scenes to ensure your current and future enjoyment of the Recreation District. Should you have any questions, concerns or just want to know more, please don’t hesitate to stop by my office and introduce yourself.
As the year draws to an end, millions of people around the world look forward to sparkling decorations, colourful lights, delicious food, jolly music, silly jokes, and exciting gifts. Yup… because Christmas is coming! But how much do you know about this super-fun holiday? Check out these informative facts about Christmas…
1 Christmas is a Christian festival that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe was the son of God. For most people, it takes place every year on 25 December – the day that the Roman Catholic Church chose to mark Jesus’ birthday. But, in fact, no one actually knows the exact date Jesus was born! Christians believe that Jesus was born in a stable in a town called Bethlehem, today found in an area of the Middle East called the West Bank.
2 Did you know that not all Christians celebrate Christmas on the same day? In countries with large populations of Orthodox Christians, such as Russia, the Ukraine and Romania, Christmas Day falls on January 7. Some Greek Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January 7 as well.
3 The name ‘Christmas’ comes from the old English phrase Cristes maesse, which means ‘Christ’s mass’. But what about ‘Xmas’? Lots of people think this is just a modern-day abbreviation –but it actually dates back to the 16th century! The ‘X’ is said to represent the Greek letter ‘Chi’– the first letter in the Greek word for Christ (pronounced ‘Christos’). Festive food like roast turkey, fruity mince pies and Christmas pudding became popular in Victorian times!
4 Come Christmas, people around the world enjoy all kinds of jolly good fun! Many of the festive traditions we have in the UK today came about in the Victorian era–such as Christmas cards, gift-giving and crackers, as well as traditional foods like mince pies and roast turkey! Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert were huge fans of Christmas, in fact!
5 Christmas trees were introduced to England around 1800 and became popular in Victorian Britain. But these were first seen in 16th Century Germany where, at Christmas time, people decorated fir trees with fruit and nuts – and later sweets, paper shapes and candles. Amazingly, historians think the origins of this festive tradition may date back to the Romans and Ancient Egyptians, who used evergreen plants and garlands as symbols of everlasting life.
6 Every year, Norway sends a beautiful home-grown Christmas tree to London, where it is decorated with lights in Trafalgar Square. Standing a towering 20m tall, the terrific tree is a gift to say thank you for the help the UK gave Norway during World War II.
7 We can’t talk about Christmas without a mention to the big bearded, rosy-cheeked jolly man – Father Christmas! But have you wondered how he got the name Santa Claus? It’s from Sinterklaas, which means Saint Nicholas in Dutch, the language of the Netherlands. St. Nicholas was a Christian bishop who lived in the 4th century – known for being kind and generous, he later became the patron saint of children. On the night before Christmas, it’s said that Santa Claus delivers presents to children on a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer!
8 But Santa isn’t the only Christmas character – there are many more around the world! In Italy, for example, a kind witch called La Befana is said to fly around on a broomstick delivering toys to children! And in Iceland, children leave shoes under the window for 13 mischievous trolls called the Yule Lads. If the child has been good, they’ll find sweets in their shoe – but if they’ve been bad, the Yule lads will leave them a rotten potato!
9 We all love to sing along to “Jingle Bells,” but have you ever noticed that the song doesn’t have the word Christmas in it? Or Jesus or Santa Claus? That’s because it wasn’t originally a Christmas song! In fact, the jolly anthem was written in 1850, entitled “One Horse Open Sleigh,” for the American holiday, Thanksgiving!
10 Now, imagine if there was no Christmas. Does it feel quite strange? Sad, perhaps? Well, believe it or not, in 1644 Christmas celebrations were made illegal in England, and soon after, in the English Colonies in America, too! At that time, members of the government felt that the religious meaning of Christmas had been forgotten, and so banned the holiday festivities. However, some people still celebrated in secret until Christmas was once again legal years later!

Calcium for Bone Health
Name
three calcium-rich
foods?
ANSWER: Milk, yogurt, cheese, fortified plant milks, foods based on milk e.g. custard, milk puddings, white sauce, and to some extent, green leafy vegetables, canned fish, nuts… just remember you need to eat a lot more of these foods. Reminder – variety each day is very important!
Which contains the most calcium per cup: Blue-top milk, green-top milk, calcium-enriched soy milk, broccoli?
ANSWER: Green-top milk. By removing the fat from blue-top milk, the concentration of calcium (and protein) is increased –you’ll get about 20% more calcium and protein per glass. The amount of calcium in soy milk varies. By choosing the calci-plus version you’ll get about the same or slightly more than you would from blue top milk. You will need about 2 cups of broccoli to get the same amount of calcium as 1 cup blue-top milk (or 4 cups to equal 1 cup of yellow-top milk).
TIP: add 2 tablespoons of skim milk powder to green-top milk to get yellow-top milk.
Is it possible to absorb Vitamin D through glass?
ANSWER: No – that is why it is important to get out in direct sunlight for about 20 minutes a day. In the summer, always be sun smart. Wear protective clothing and stay in the shade during the hottest part of the day.
Tips for Keeping Your Physical Health
Move every day: Engage in light activity like walking, or a mix of moderate and vigorous activities if you are already active, aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week.
Include strength and balance: Do activities that improve strength and balance at least two days a week, such as yoga, tai chi, or using weights.
Prioritize flexibility: Incorporate stretching to maintain flexibility and a healthy range of motion.
Get enough rest: Aim for high-quality sleep each night to support overall health and energy.
Eat a healthy diet: Focus on fruits, veggies, whole grains, and low-fat protein. Minimize processed foods and sugary drinks.
Mental and emotional well-being
Stay mentally active: Keep your brain sharp by reading, doing puzzles, learning a new skill, or playing a musical instrument. Be social: Connect with family, friends, or community groups to ward off loneliness and depression.
Find purpose: Engage in hobbies, volunteer, or work on creative projects to provide a sense of purpose.
Spend time outdoors: Get outside for fresh air and sunshine when possible, perhaps through gardening.
Monitor your health: Be vigilant about checking for changes in vision, hearing, or other health issues and speak to your doctor about them.
