REC BOARD NEWS
Hello Residents,
Throughout my professional life, I have worked in companies, rising from the ground floor to executive leadership. My journey began in breweries and eventually led to managing a diverse conglomerate that produced bottle caps, closures, cans, plastics, and industrial coatings—including architectural paint.
Now, “embracing the wisdom of my age,” I find myself overwhelmed by the many responsibilities involved in managing a District. It became clear that the environment needed a transformation—from a somber, quiet space into a vibrant hub of engaging activities. To achieve this, we carefully analyzed the club’s operations to understand how things were being done and how they could be improved for greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness. While it wasn’t feasible to implement all changes at once, we made steady, incremental progress. Today, as we enter our fifth year of operation, we’re proud to have maintained the same membership fees since this Board took office.
With patience and planning, our dedicated team planned and managed the club’s core functions: which included administration, finance, facility maintenance and event coordination.
Despite our progress, the complexity of managing the club remains exhausting. In truth, much of our success is owed to our remarkable team led by Yvonne Helper (Chairperson) and Joe Mallen (District Manager).
While opinions may vary, it would be unjust not to recognize Yvonne’s extraordinary contributions and her spirit of volunteerism. Her dedication has been instrumental in shaping the clubhouse into what it is today.

DISTRICT NEWS
Dear Residents,
Fall is quickly upon us and the District starts its new fiscal year. We continue to look for ways to improve our community. Two projects that are underway are the remodeling of our Box Office space and the improvement of the look and function of our theater.
Our Chairperson, Yvonne Hepler, has led the charge to upgrade the lights & sound of our theater and rebrand it. We invite you to visit the new Sunrise Epic Theater website, www.sunriseepictheater.com, where you can look at all the upcoming shows, dances, and performances, as well as purchase tickets. It’s going to be an exciting and busy season!

Recreation District Manager
We have been working with Aquagenix/TIGRIS for our fountain and aerator projects. We recently added a big fountain between buildings 196, 197, 198 and 199 and another by buildings 192, 193 and 195 for Residents to enjoy. These will showcase the area nicely as well as improve the health of the lake. The fountains come with LED lights and are on timers scheduled to go off sometime in the evening so as not to disturb Residents.
The golf course has been going through some big changes. It’s been 30 years since the 9-hole course was built, and it was time to replace the greens. We’ve enlisted an experienced company, LANDIRR, “specializing in new construction and the restoration of golf courses.” Their team is replacing our greens and creating a much better experience for all golfers. Weather permitting, we hope to re-open the course in early November.
All of these projects will improve Owner’s property values and improve the enjoyment by everyone. Our Sunrise Lakes Phase IV Clubhouse is a special place that is to be enjoyed by all. Residents with questions or concerns may contact us at the Recreation District’s website, www.sl4recdistrict.com.

OCTOBER
October’s name derives from the Latin for “eight” because it was the eighth month in the old Roman calendar, though it’s the tenth month now. It is home to famous events like Halloween and the dedication of the Statue of Liberty, and it is celebrated with various holidays, including Columbus Day, Dia de los Muertos, and this year Yom Kippur. The month also features autumn scenery, with leaves changing color, and is a time for events like Oktoberfest and the announcement of the Nobel Prizes.
St. Luke’s Little Summer
Lovely, summer-like days that occur around October 18 are called Saint Luke’s Little Summer in honor of the saint’s feast day. Around this time, Saint Luke’s feast day, there is a period brief period of calm, dry weather. Of course, it’s difficult to generalize today across the vast continent of North America, but the temperature is usually mild and the leaf colors are turning a gorgeous color. It’s a good time for a brief vacation or visit to a park. In Venice, Italy, they say: “San Luca, El ton va te la zuca” (Pumpkins go stale on St Luke’s Day), but here in North America, pumpkins are enjoying their finest hour. Saint Luke is the patron saint of physicians and surgeons so it seems only fitting that the good doctor give us these calm days. In olden days, St. Luke’s Day did not receive as much attention in the secular world as St. John’s Day (June 24) and Michaelmas (September 29), so it was to keep from being forgotten that St. Luke presented us with some golden days to cherish before the coming of winter, or so the story goes. Some folks call this Indian Summer, but that officially occurs between November 11 and November 20.

How to Manage Acute Pain Beforeand After Surgery
When parts of your body throb, cramp, or tingle, they may be signs of acute pain. This type of pain could be due to an injury or infection that requires surgery, resulting in discomfort that could last as little as a week or as long as three months. But a new National Council on Aging pain management guide shows why the road to effective pain relief starts before you even go under the knife.
Acute Pain Management: A Guide to Managing Your Pain Before and After a Medical Procedure
This important guide lays out a series of recommendations that:
a
• Promote transparency with health care providers about your pain tolerance
• Provide tools to help you clearly describe your pain
t r at: rly heir ug reduce
• Detail drug medications and their side effects, as well as non-drug therapies like acupuncture to reduce pain as you heal
The guide also includes questions to ask your health care team before your surgery, such as:
“What type of pain am I in for?”
“How long will my pain last?”
And the guide includes questions you might be asked about your current medications and past experiences with pain relief management, including issues with substance abuse. There are even examples of gentle balance and strength training exercises you can do pre-surgery to help reduce future pain for an easier and smoother recovery.
Because your pain before surgery may feel much different afterward, the guide offers different pain scales to rate your discomfort based on your ability to carry out everyday tasks. After a hospital discharge, you can stay prepared for pain relief at home with a guided checklist that makes sure you don’t leave without:
• Detailed directions on how to take prescribed medications
• Confirmation your pharmacy has your medications ready for pick up
• Instructions on how to properly store your medicine
The guide also helps you assess next steps with your physician if your pain transitions from acute pain to chronic pain that lasts several months or even longer.
