From the E DITOR

Let’s celebrate our imperfections!

How insecure are we, really? Our interview with actor Emraan Hashmi this month got me introspecting. In an exclusive with Hashtag, Hashmi opens up about his insecurities as an actor. He goes one step ahead and boldly states, “I am very insecure. If any actor says he is secure, then he is lying.” The recent season of ‘Koffee with Karan’ saw celebrities opening up about their struggles with depression and insecurities.

It's disheartening to see individuals like Deepika Padukone, who openly discussed her depression, and Sarah Khan, who faced criticism for her fashion choices, becoming targets of scrutiny in our society. Why have we become so vain? Why do we constantly need likes and acknowledgment to feel good about ourselves? Social media has taken this madness to a whole new level. People are so consumed with putting their A-game out there that they no longer know what normalcy is. They are either overdressing, overenthusiastic, or just so over-the-top all the time that they turn vain without even realizing it.

Now, all it takes is 'one less like' to put them on antidepressants. I wonder how people do it, day in and day out. It's exhausting to maintain this facade of perfection—looking perfect, eating perfectly, adding the perfect song and filter—it's honestly too tiring! Whatever happened to being candid and simple?

Summer is the perfect time to add some shine to our routines. Let’s pledge to stay away from this madness. Let’s meet real people and make real friends; let’s look ugly and flaunt our flaws. Seriously, we need to disconnect from the pressures of social media and groom our minds instead. Let’s connect genuinely instead of getting lost in the pursuit of perfection. Let's break free from this cycle of vanity, prioritize

real connections over virtual likes, and celebrate our imperfections.

Let's celebrate the simple joys of life. To help you do that, we have a range of stories for you in this issue, from travel discoveries to festive Holi foods, pets, and even the latest interviews from our trending actors. Let's spread the sunshine of this summer into our lives as well.

Emraan Hashmi

The Actor Who Dares to Be Di erent!

Showtime, produced by Dharmatic Entertainment and directed by Mihir Desai and Archit Kumar, is set to start streaming on Disney+Hotstar on March 8. The show focuses on the entertainment industry's biggest trade secrets. ShowTime unmasks people of Bollywood and the outward sheen that Bollywood has. Emraan Hashmi's charismatic presence will allure the audiences once again. The star shares his thoughts on nepotism in the industry and more with Lipika Varma.

On his character in ShowtimeI have been donning great characters from my first film, breaking the wellproportioned definition of the antihero. When you watch Showtime, you will realize that the journey is gray and relatable; it’s not negative. Some characteristics and traits will be more evident, but I won’t say whether they're good or bad.

On what is challenging to himIf things become easy, it feels boring, so I take roles that scare me and feel I can’t pull it off. When any character keeps me on my toes, especially something with a certain amount of risk element, that feels like a bonus. It comes from the fact that I should be able to give something new to my audiences through my performances.

On taking up ShowTime after a long gap-

If it’s in my hands, I would love to do three/four shows/films. Keeping the market trend, whatever films are written keeping me in mind, and whatever is offered to me, I select from those scripts. I did get offers, but they weren’t anything path-breaking. But when Karan [Johar] brought this script to me, I found it fascinating. As I have been an insider for so many years, and the material is very explosive, I chose to be a part of this. Audiences are attracted to our film industry, and there is a magnetic quality when such discussions happen.

"I have been donning great characters from my first film, breaking the well-proportioned definition of the anti-hero."

If I feel secure-

I am very insecure. If any actor says he is secure, then he is lying. I have worked with many personality-styled actors. Yes, considering a few things, I feel insecure. I’m insecure about one thing –whether audiences’ will like what I am doing or not. We make films for them. These things are uncontrollable and not in our hands.

Explanation on insider/outsider debate-

I did get help for my best film. My entrance into films was easy as I am part of the film family. That’s the environment I grew up in. But as a child, I never wanted to be an actor; it happened accidentally, and mine wasn’t a grand launch. In my first film, ‘Footpath,’ I starred as a supporting actor. It was easier to get my first opportunity than an outsider. The audience's acceptance is very important whether you are an insider or an outsider.

INDIA 9 March 2024

On Nepotism debate-

The nepotism debate has existed for a long time, but after this show, it will seem like we have added kerosene. ‘Showtime’ will ignite discussions on this topic again, and we will be under fire. It’s unfair to say only insiders have done well. There are many examples where outsiders have sustained much more successfully than insiders. It’s a secular and democratic industry where the janta decides your fate. Nepotism will never leave our industry. Everyone from any industry will extend their favouritism to their kith and kin. The problem starts when the producer doesn't give work to outsiders. However, every producer gives opportunities to everyone.

On what is challenging to him-

I didn’t struggle as much as an insider. In the thick of things, we face obstacles in every profession. I haven’t had a remarkable journey. I have been here for 20 years, and we face different struggles. When that struggle begins, you usually feel

I will get another offer. Also, when your previous film flops, you need producers to hold your hand and support you.

Any particular thing has been an eye-opener for youEverything has been an eyeopener for me. When I was born, my grandmother stopped working in films. Her last film was Naam, starring Sanjay Dutt, where she played Sanjay Dutt’s mother. Our industry has cutthroat competition. When you have learned your work, some people may make you feel you don’t know your job. Learning is a never-ending process; hard work and earning must be continued to brush your craft.

On upping the theatrical game and more

When you enter the industry, you feel you know everything, but with experience, you still have to learn a lot. South films or Bollywood films are ever-changing. As an industry, we’re facing new theatrical hurdles,

I didn’t struggle as much as an insider. In the thick of things, we face obstacles in every profession. I haven’t had a remarkable journey.

with films not doing as good as they used to before the pandemic. New faces are entering our industry, and we must up our theatrical business. OTT invention has enabled new directors to come on board with new/fresh scripts. As an actor, you must try all kinds of mediums, unlike many actors who may feel they are worth being theatrical actors only.

Not playing a villain in his next South film, G2 Goodachari 2 has a two-hero parallel lead. As I played a villain in Tiger 3, people assume I will also be playing a villain’s role in my next film. I was slightly perturbed. However, the makers will clarify my role, though they will not reveal much.

SHOP, EARN BITCOIN;

BITCOIN MADE SIMPLE; BITCOIN MODERNIZES SHOPPING

Roshni Aslam, an Indian entrepreneur from Bangalore, is the Co-founder and Head of Finance at GoSats, India’s pioneering Bitcoin rewards platform. After graduating with a M.Sc. in Finance from the University of Strathclyde, UK, Roshni gained valuable experience as an investment analyst at Alphabit, a cryptocurrency investment fund, and later as a Senior Research Analyst at ONEX AE in Dubai. With a vision to simplify Bitcoin adoption, Roshni and her brother Roshan founded GoSats in February 2021. Co-founded by Mohammed Roshan and Roshni Aslam, GoSats provides a seamless way for users to earn Bitcoin while shopping from over 120 popular brands, including Flipkart, Nykaa, and Swiggy. Users can easily access GoSats through the mobile app or Chrome extension, making purchases via UPI or credit/debit cards. Roshni Alam in conversation with Surabhi Goel about GoSats, how it began, and more.

The inspiration behind GoSats stemmed from my passion for Bitcoin and finance and the desire to make it accessible to everyone in India. I believe Bitcoin is a valuable asset and wanted to offer a simple way for people to earn it while shopping. We aim to introduce Bitcoin to a broader audience by providing Bitcoin rewards instead of traditional cashback. In the cryptocurrency ecosystem, we envision GoSats as a leading platform in India. Our recent launch of a Visa card allows users to top up their card with Bitcoin, further integrating earning and spending in the crypto space. We aspire for GoSats to be positioned among the top companies in India, facilitating the widespread adoption of Bitcoin.

I was fortunate not to face the typical challenges many women encounter. However, I did encounter difficulties in product development, idea creation, fundraising, and navigating legal aspects. Despite these challenges, I persevered and overcame them to establish GoSats successfully.

1. Download the GoSats app from the App Store or Google Play Store and complete the registration process, including KYC.

2. Browse the list of 120+ partnered brands on the app and choose where to shop.

3. Users can purchase vouchers from brands like Myntra or Nykaa or opt for the GoSats card for a hassle-free experience.

4. To get the card, users need to select either the Intro or Elite card, complete the KYC process, and make the payment. The Elite card costs ₹999, and the Intro card costs ₹399; within 10 days, the physical card will be delivered to the address.

5. Users earn Bitcoin through purchases, which are stored in their GoSats wallet. However, for security, a third-party operator securely holds the Bitcoin.

6. Shop as usual, and GoSats will reward Bitcoin based on the merchant's fees from the backend. Even when using the GoSats card, users can earn Bitcoin without affecting their transaction amounts.

7. Every Wednesday, GoSats processes withdrawals for users. For example, if a user has earned 100,000 sats (equivalent to 0.001 Bitcoin), they can request a withdrawal.

To attract and retain users in an emerging cryptocurrency market, GoSats has strategically expanded its brand partnerships to include popular retailers like BigBasket and Shopee, responding to user preferences and feedback. In addition to Bitcoin rewards, the platform introduced new asset classes such as gold, catering to diverse user interests and enhancing engagement. Looking ahead, GoSats aims to offer a broader range of asset classes as cashback options, providing users with more rewarding and diversified investment opportunities.

I analyse financial reports, such as burn rates, to monitor spending and identify opportunities for revenue enhancement. Recently, we've initiated strategies to introduce new campaigns to boost revenue and optimize financial performance in the dynamic cryptocurrency landscape. With over half a million users since its inception, GoSats has grown significantly. A year ago, the launch of the GoSats card further enhanced user benefits, resulting in over 25 Bitcoin distributed to users and processing over $1,000,000 in annualized shopping volume.

Cholesterol-Lowering Foods: YOUR ULTIMATE GUIDE FOR HEART HEALTH

In the fast-paced world we live in, maintaining a heart-healthy lifestyle is essential. High cholesterol levels can lead to various cardiovascular diseases, making it crucial to watch what we eat. Fortunately, many delicious and nutritious foods can help lower cholesterol levels and promote overall well-being. Dhanush Kumar explores these cholesterol-lowering foods and why you should consider adding them to your daily diet.

Oats:

Start your day right with a bowl of hearty oats. Oats are rich in fiber, which helps reduce LDL cholesterol, also known as bad cholesterol. They also contain betaglucans, known for their cholesterol-lowering properties. Oatmeal is not only nutritious but also incredibly versatile. Add berries, nuts, or a drizzle of honey for a delightful breakfast.

Avocado

Avocado is a creamy fruit that is not only a delicious addition to your meals but also beneficial for your heart.

Avocados are rich in fats, which can help lower LDL cholesterol levels. Mash them up and spread them on whole grain toast, or add slices to your salad for a hearthealthy boost.

Nuts:

Nuts such as almonds, walnuts, and pistachios are tasty and brimming with heart-healthy nutrients. They are packed with monounsaturated fats, fiber, and plant sterols, all of which contribute to lowering LDL cholesterol levels. A few nuts a day can significantly affect your heart health.

INDIA 28 March 2024

Berries:

Berries like Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are bursting with antioxidants, which can help prevent the oxidation of cholesterol. Their high fiber content also contributes to lower cholesterol levels. Enjoy these vibrant fruits alone, in smoothies, or as a topping for yogurt and oatmeal.

Olive Oil

Swap the saturated fats with olive oil in your cooking. Olive oil contains fats and anti-oxidants, such as polyphenols, that can lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. Use it for drizzling over salads or dipping whole-grain bread.

Spinach and Leafy Greens:

Dark, leafy greens like spinach and kale are packed with nutrients like lutein, fiber, and potassium, which support heart health. They also contain minimal calories and can easily be incorporated into your diet through salads, smoothies, or a side dish.

Garlic

Garlic not only adds flavor to your dishes but also offers medicinal properties. It contains allicin, a compound that can lower cholesterol levels and reduce blood pressure. Incorporate fresh garlic into your cooking whenever possible, or consider garlic supplements if you dislike its pungent taste.

Aghora Tech by Arijoy Bhattacharya

Arijoy Bhattacharya’s exhibition, ‘Aghora Tech,’ explores the intersection of two seemingly disparate worlds: the minimalist earthly Tantric paintings of Rajasthan and the geometric precision of the Bauhaus (a German artistic movement). Vittal Narayana in conversation with Arijoy about the exhibition and more.

My father had encouraged me since I was very young. I could always visit his studio and pick up anything I wanted; sometimes, I got rebuked for it, too. Once, he took me to a significant show named ‘Enduring Image.’ This was one of the major things I witnessed as a child.

I have been doing figurative art for a long time and did it until 2021; after that, it was a transition. I had made a painting of a goddess's three eyes, which turned out to be a geometric depiction of the eyes. I pursued this idea and made a series between November 2022 and 2023; I abandoned the figurative lexicon and went forth with the geometric series.

I visited Varanasi in 2017 and went to Baba Kinara Stall, the headquarters of Aghora lineage. I had expected it to be a cremation ground aesthetics and sages doing heterodox practices, but unlike all that, when I went to that place, I saw an extraordinary sight. I saw a rooster, a dog, and a cat in an animal shelter sitting side by side without any animosity towards each other. After seeing this, I was convinced there was some power here, something else guiding all of this. Also, I had seen nothing of the sort that you would associate with Aghoris as you see in pop culture. They are realised saints; they go beyond pure and impure; they express the state of non-disgust they have made themselves available for the underprivileged people of the society. For instance, they have opened hospitals for leprosy patients. Society treats them with disgust, and this is like a message from Aghoras that they are beyond disgust and non-disgust. All of these got my attention.

INDIA 43 March 2024

I have primarily used the colours red, black, and white; white on the background, I have played around with black and red over that. There are a few places where I have used blue. There is one where I think I have used a bit of yellow. That’s about it in this series. In simple terms, in the Indian tradition, white is considered sattva as purity, red denotes rajas, which means dynamism, and black represents tamas, which means inertia. When it comes to blue, I got interested in it because, in the Sikh tradition, blue is used as a colour of valour to express heroic sentiment.

The works themselves are a byproduct of the interest in Aghor, and I want to introduce Aghor as a point of generating interest. In the catalogue, I have provided translations of authentic Aghora texts along with the images to generate interest in the actual tradition of Aghora and not what it is made out to be by pop culture these days.

I do not have too much ambition entwined with this project. Instead, it’s just an introduction to the calm aspect of the Aghora. It has the Rudra aspect, mind you; it is not the absence of fear but overcoming fear by facing it. What I feel is the Aghoras who indulge in heterodox practices like smearing themselves with ashes and stuff like that, that is done to obliterate the notion of impure and pure, which is a duality. They go beyond these dualities by indulging in these extreme practices. It is about transmuting the energies. In this exhibition, I have made a very humble attempt to present to people the calm aspect of the Aghoris.

On February 10th, 2018, BAPS representatives, led by Prime Minister Modi, met with Sheik Mohamed in the Presidential palace. A memorandum of understanding for the temple project was signed. The foundation stone-laying ceremony took place on April 20th, 2019.

Yami Gautam expresses her excitement over the box office success and critical acclaim for the film 'Article 370.' The actress, who transitioned from the television industry to a successful film career, shares insights into her journey and discusses the significant milestone of embracing motherhood. In an exclusive interview with Lipika Varma, Yami delves into the genre-defining nature of 'Article 370' and reflects on its impact and success in the film industry.

Transitioning from the most desirable woman to now embracing motherhood, what's your perspective on your industry growth journey?

When you look at the things happening and changing around you, you realise that you have been working hard and how far you’ve come; all in all, I can say it’s been a good journey. I am satisfied and happy about everything that has happened so far and all my experiences. The idea is always to embrace life, and I always thank God for it.

After Shahrukh Khan, I think you are the only one from the television industry with such high success on the big screen. What do you have to say about doing well on celluloid?

Even though I worked for a brief time in television, I never thought of myself as a television actor. I was that new; I didn’t know the difference between television and film acting. I just knew I enjoyed this and wanted to do it as a career. As things progressed, I needed to stretch my wings and look for endless possibilities. I always had my parents' support, but financially caring for myself, especially in a new city, was challenging. I learned to step out of my comfort zone and start auditioning. It took some time to get good work, but I did a few e-commercials. It was a different kind of exposure. Then followed Vicky Donor, and it was a different story after that.

INDIA 57 March 2024

Aditya Dhar has chosen a very serious, sensitive subject for the film Article 370; however, the film has excellent B.O. results, any comments?

We work in an industry where it’s all about creating films, visuals, and emotions. Aditya has always taken a keen interest in writing and has written ‘Uri’ and co-written this film. Article 370 was a national event when it happened, but what we saw was only the information present in the public domain. Even being a non-Kashmiri, speaking of myself and on behalf of many of my friends and relatives, somewhere, it felt good; it felt that something right had been done after whatever happened in the past. Especially after knowing Aditya, I could relate even more because I got to understand and hear some stories from him and their experiences in 1990. The reality is far more gruesome, sometimes more than what we might have read. So, when I was offered this film and read the script, I was absolutely amazed.

" I think it’s an important film, not just as a part of cinema, but as history. I call this kind of cinema a genre-defining film because there aren’t many films like this that I can give examples of."

On the genre of Article 370-

The story is based on true events; as an audience, it's more philosophy. Because you keep imagining something like this and why this is important, what is the meaning of 370, and what is the consequence of what happened? I personally think it’s essential, especially for the current generation and youth, to know and understand such historic events.

I think it’s an important film, not just as a part of cinema, but as history. I call this kind of cinema a genre-defining film because there aren’t many films like this that I can give examples of. The way the film was made and simplified is also very important.

On simplification of the storyline being a hit formula-

We have the longest constitution in the world; it can be very complex for anyone to understand. You can simplify it and break it down so that the audience can engage with it and understand the history of this country, why this happened, and what happened. So, of course, it will have action and everything, but at the heart of it, it’s a significant chapter in our political history.

On scripting mantra-

When it comes to writing, Aditya likes to do it by himself. Of course, he has a team, and they all research and exchange ideas, but primarily, he likes to lead it. When it comes to the actors, when it comes to me, he is always open to ideas and suggestions and logic. He’s a very logical person. Either there’s a solution to something, or there isn’t a solution. If you’re saying something that makes sense, give me logic and visa-versa, which stands for anyone. He’s very close to his team members; they are always discussing, exploring, and figuring out new ways to improve it. That’s one of his critical things: he cannot settle for anything mediocre or less than excellent.

Rav na Tandon

Raveena Tandon plays a vital role in ‘Karmma Calling’ as Indrani Kothari. It is based on the popular 2011 American series, ‘Revenge.’ Set in a world of glitz and glamour spiced with deceit and betrayal, Raveena will be seen as the glamorous queen of the 90s married to a billionaire. Lipika Varma, in conversation with the actress about the show, her career, and her kids joining the industry.

What is karma to you? Do you believe in taking revenge?

I'm a firm believer in Karma. I believe in the mantra, ‘Jaisi karni waisi bharni.’ I just believe in Dharm aur Karm. I just feel those who do good or bad will face the consequences according to their karma. I am the kind of person who will forgive but can't forget. When we are young, we always feel we have not done anything wrong to anyone; why are we facing bad? Somewhere, we then think, let's continue doing good and not deviate from it.

What is your take on turning a badass at this juncture of your professional life?

I like playing different roles and have always wanted to play this kind of character for a long time. When ‘Karmma Calling’ came to me, it was the right cherry-pick. This role is quite different from the KGF 2 role. This is a layered and complex character that you will see me playing. However, after watching the series, you will really not understand whether she is a bad or a good manipulator or is being manipulated. Sometimes you feel good about her, and sometimes bad about her.

Did you feel director Ruchi brought in some artistic changes in you?

I have always considered myself to be the director's artist. I allow the director to mould how they expect me to be in their character. We just come and perform our parts, but they have seen the entire film according to their vision. They have seen the level of performance differently. I have grown up in this industry and learned through my dad that we need to go by the director's vision, so I follow them. It has been a great learning experience for me most of the time. Ruchi, as director, is bang on.

How do you look at the changes to stardom in today's social media era? Are you open to these changes?

I don't know about stardom because I didn't take it seriously then, nor do I take it seriously in today's social media era. I was born and raised in this industry and see it as a big family. Ultimately, your hard work, talent, and sincerity make you what you are. If talent or hard work refers to stardom, then I think people deserve that stardom. But in today’s day and age with social media, the instant likes or dislikes, to a certain extent, with luck and your honest work, nobody can take it away from you.

Unlike many actors, you haven’t changed your name by adding or subtracting letters. Do you not believe in numerology?

I believe there is a certain science in numerology and astrology which I completely respect. However, I also believe in manifestation, hard work, and honesty.

How do you look at the changes in this generation?

I think we can speak about every generation when it comes to looking at the differences between millennia and this generation; change is inevitable. It’s all about how you stick to your morals and values and also keep them in place and try to imbibe them for future generations is what matters.

What’s your take on the four generations in your family?

I have given the same value to my kids that my parents gave me. I try to instil those same values in my children. I hope I am successful in giving it to them. Sometimes, when I say something to Rasha, I hear my mom saying those words in my ears...this goes on from one generation to the other. I have two elder daughters, Pooja and Chhaya, and now when I hear them imparting the same values to their children, I feel Yeh toh main tum logon ko bolti thi. So, values are just passed on from one generation to another.

Rasha [daughter] will soon be venturing into the field of glitz and glamour. Have you given her any advice?

As a parent, you can guide your children about right or wrong, but they should be able to realize when they make a mistake. I don’t interfere much after explaining the ifs and buts. However, we are there to guide them, and they have to live with their decisions. I will never overprotect my children. If I do, they will not realize their inner strength and ability to pick themselves up after they fall. I will let them make mistakes so they can stand on their own feet. I feel life is the most prominent teacher.
