From the E DITOR

As we step into this festive season, it’s a fitting time to pause and reflect on the peculiar creatures we are. We often rush through life without acknowledging the blessings surrounding us—our health, loved ones, and comforts. It’s only when these are threatened that we realize their actual value. How many of us wait until illness strikes to appreciate our health or take the presence of family for granted until a loss shakes our world?

Recently, I received a distressing call about two young children, aged just 1 and 3, who were left stranded after losing their father, and their mother abandoned them. Despite being connected to various social and charity groups, finding an immediate solution was challenging. Thankfully, a relative, an Anganwadi worker, stepped in to give them a home. This incident served as a stark reminder of the contrasting lives we lead. We can sit comfortably in air-conditioned cars, complaining about trivial inconveniences, while others face harsh realities on the same streets. We can watch distant conflicts unfold on the news, barely acknowledging the privilege that separates us from the chaos.

Kriti Sanon

Kriti Sanon has cemented her place in Bollywood as one of the industry's most versatile actors. Known for her performances in films like Mimi, Bareilly Ki Barfi, and Dilwale, she has captivated audiences with her range and authenticity. Now, Kriti is ready to take her career to the next level by stepping into production with her debut film, Do Patti. Not only will she be producing, but she is also set to share the screen with Kajol, one of Bollywood’s most celebrated actors. Kriti talks about her evolution from an engineer to a model, then to an acclaimed actress, and now a producer, highlighting this incredible journey's highs, lows, and in-betweens. We give you excerpts from the press conference.

How does it feel to transition from being an actress to taking on the responsibilities of a producer with Do Patti?

It’s exhilarating and challenging at the same time. I’ve always been actively involved in the creative process as an actor, but with Do Patti, I’ve had the chance to influence the project right from its inception. I’ve learned so much about the business side of filmmaking. It’s an entirely different ball game, and I’ve found it extremely rewarding to shape the narrative and have a say in every detail. Producing is a new responsibility, but it’s one that I’m embracing wholeheartedly.

What was it about Do Patti that made it the perfect film for your debut as a producer?

Do Patti is very special to me because it’s a story that I resonated with deeply. When I first heard the script from Kanika Dhillon, I immediately knew this was the one. The characters' layers, the story's depth, and the emotions it stirs are all very compelling. It’s a film with something to say beyond the surface, and I felt it was the perfect opportunity to start my journey as a producer.

You’ve had the opportunity to work with Kajol in Do Patti. What was that experience like?

It was incredible! I was over the moon when I found out Kajol had agreed to be a part of the film. She’s always been someone I admired, and she brings so much energy and charisma to the set. Watching her perform is like witnessing magic. Even with her vast experience, she still has this infectious enthusiasm and a collaborative spirit. Sharing the screen with her was exciting and inspiring for me.

I’ve learned to be patient and to trust in my journey. I’m so grateful for where I am now… Producing Do Patti is like reaching another milestone in that journey.

You’re balancing dual roles as an actor and producer on this project. How did you manage the switch between these responsibilities?

It wasn’t easy! There were times when the actor in me would be engrossed in a scene, but the producer in me would be thinking about the logistics. I constantly reminded myself to stay focused on one role at a time. Fortunately, I had a great producing partner who took care of the production side while I was on set. I appreciated the hard work behind the scenes, which actors usually aren’t as exposed to.

Now that you’ve taken this big step does reaching this point in your career feel gratifying?

Absolutely. Looking back at where I started, it feels like a dream. I’ve had moments of frustration, especially when I thought I deserved opportunities

that didn’t come my way. But I’ve learned to be patient and to trust in my journey. I’m so grateful for where I am now, for the recognition, and for being able to choose the kind of projects I want to be associated with. Producing Do Patti is like reaching another milestone in that journey.

You’ve been in the industry for nearly a decade now. Does it still feel surreal at times? It does. It’s been a fulfilling journey but hasn’t always been smooth. I didn’t have industry connections, so I had to work hard to establish myself. I remember when people primarily saw me as “Tiger Shroff’s costar” after Heropanti. It took time and effort to be known for who I am. With films like Bareilly Ki Barfi and Mimi, I finally felt like I was being recognized on my terms. It feels like I’ve found my place in the industry, and I am excited about what’s to come.

With Do Patti, I’ve had the chance to influence the project right from its inception… It’s an entirely different ball game, and I’ve found it extremely rewarding.

Would you say that you’ve always been someone who likes to weigh all options before making decisions?

I’d say I’ve always been someone who listens to her instincts. I consider my options, but at the end of the day, I go with what feels right. I’ve realized that sometimes taking risks is necessary, and being uncertain is okay. That’s where growth happens. I’m content with my choices and open to exploring new opportunities and pushing my limits.

You’ve had diverse roles in your career. What do you look for when choosing scripts?

It’s always been about the story and how much I connect with it. I’m open to trying different genres, but I want to be part of projects that challenge me and allow me to grow as an actor. Even if a film doesn’t do well, I don’t dismiss the hard work that went into it. Every experience teaches me something new, and I carry those lessons forward.

You mentioned feeling lucky to have had an ample opportunity like Dilwale early in your career. How did that shape your journey?

Dilwale was a massive film, and working with such experienced actors gave me a lot of exposure. It introduced me to a global audience and helped me learn from some of the best in the industry. It was an invaluable experience that contributed to shaping me as an actor. Since then, every film has been a step toward carving out my niche in the industry.

After your experience with Do Patti, can we expect more production ventures from you in the future?

Yes, definitely. I’ve enjoyed the process and want to continue exploring this new side of filmmaking. There’s something magical about being able to influence the storytelling process at a deeper level, and I’m excited to see where this journey as a producer takes me. I’m looking forward to more creative and professional projects that challenge me.

There were times when the actor in me would be engrossed in a scene, but the producer in me would be thinking about the logistics… I constantly reminded myself to focus on one role at a time.

NURTURING ARTISTIC TALENT: SUNAINA MISRA'S VISION FOR ARTISTE CULTURE

In the vibrant world of contemporary art, one name stands out for its unique approach to nurturing and managing artistic talent: Goa-based Sunaina Misra. As the founder of Artiste Culture, Sunaina has revolutionized how artists are managed, helping them navigate the complexities of the art industry. Her agency works directly with artists worldwide, assisting them in making connections and developing the skills needed to elevate their creative careers. Surabhi Goel had the pleasure of sitting down with Sunaina to discuss her background, the origin of Artiste Culture, and her vision for the future.

Sunaina, could you share your background and education that led to founding Artiste Culture?

I always grew up in an environment where my mother encouraged me to explore art in various forms, painting or visiting galleries. She wanted me to find my passion, so she enrolled me in different classes, from basketball to art. By age 15, I started working with an artist in Lucknow, helping him in his studio. There, I discovered my knack for organizing and managing artistic tasks, such as typing resumes and basic computer tasks. This experience sparked my interest in art management. Later, I pursued my Master's in Art and Design Management in Newcastle, which solidified my understanding of the field. After various roles, including working for an art start-up and a museum, COVID-19 hit, leading me to start Artiste Culture.

A blend of necessity and passion drove me to create a platform to support artists during uncertain times.

What inspired you to start Artiste Culture, and what was your vision for it?

The inspiration came from identifying gaps within the industry. Artists often struggled with managing their careers while focusing on their art. I wanted to create a space where artists could focus on creating while we took care of everything else—finding exhibitions, writing citations, and managing logistics. My vision was to build a multicultural and diverse environment that supports artists from all over the world. Over time, Artiste Culture has grown into a team that helps artists navigate their careers, offering a comprehensive management service that allows them to thrive.

Sunaina Misra

What significant challenges do artists face today, and how does Artiste Culture help them overcome these?

One of the most prominent challenges artists face is financial stability. Even established artists can feel stagnated and seek new opportunities to scale up. Another challenge is navigating the complexities of exhibitions and programs. Many artists prefer to focus on their craft rather than the administrative side of their careers. At Artiste Culture, we provide a one-stop solution for these needs. We manage everything from writing proposals and documents to networking with galleries and collectors. This allows artists to concentrate on creating their work while we handle the logistics and management, similar to how celebrities have managers.

Can you describe the critical programs and services Artiste Culture offers to help artists achieve their goals?

Our services are divided into several verticals:

• Artist Management: This is the core of our program. We represent artists, helping them overcome challenges and achieve their aspirations by managing their careers comprehensively.

• Gallery Collaborations: We work with galleries to showcase

artists' works, bringing artists to new audiences and spaces.

• Architect and Interior Designer Collaborations: We assist architects and interior designers by sourcing artworks that fit their projects and managing all logistics, from finding artists to coordinating installations.

• Private Collectors: We help collectors curate diverse and culturally rich collections, adding unique pieces worldwide.

We aim to create a symbiotic relationship between artists, galleries, architects, and collectors, ensuring each sector supports the other.

Can you share some success stories from Artiste Culture and its impact on the artistic community?

We have had several milestones while we are still in our early years. One significant achievement was scaling up during the pandemic and keeping our artists engaged and supported. In 2024, we expanded our reach by traveling to Dubai and collaborating with galleries and artists there. Another milestone was helping artists participate in exhibitions and selling their works, thus completing the entire circle from creation to sale. Although critical of our progress, these small milestones are significant steps toward our long-term goals.

What are your goals for Artiste Culture, and how do you plan to expand or evolve the organization?

Our focus for 2024 and beyond is on growth and expansion. We aim to establish a more substantial presence in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, collaborating with more galleries, architects, and interior designers in these regions. We are also working towards building a more permanent team structure to develop better programs. Additionally, we plan to move from a virtual presence to more physical exhibitions and interactions. This year, we are hosting an exhibition in Hyderabad, bringing together artists from different cultures within India. We aim to create more opportunities for artists, fostering a diverse and dynamic global art community.

Water Warriors

The harsh summer of 2024 is a stark reminder that there is an urgent need to conserve the elixir of life: water. So, what is causing the water crisis, and how does one mitigate its impact? Climate change, high contamination of water, over-exploitation of groundwater, deforestation, reduced rainfall, and increased agricultural demand are some of the main reasons for water shortage. However, while the water situation seems stark, there is a silver lining on the cloud as many water-saving ventures seek to make a difference. Bindu Gopal Rao highlights several of these impactful initiatives.

Bala Vikasa is an NGO pioneering community-driven sustainable development activities in seven states, impacting about eight million people. A significant initiative they have is to provide access to safe drinking water at an affordable price of Rs 3-5 per 20 litres to rural communities suffering from high fluoride content in the available groundwater. Most small and marginal farmers rely heavily on natural freshwater resources for irrigation. However, groundwater depletion and low rainfall in urban and suburban areas have led to severe water scarcity, pushing farmers into a vicious cycle of debt due to reduced crop quality and yield. “In response to the struggles of farmers in rural Telangana, Bala Vikasa, founded by André Gingras (90) and Bala T. Singareddy (83), launched a pioneering farm pond construction program in 2015. This initiative, supported by CSR partners, aims to help farmers conserve rainwater, meet their irrigation needs, and replenish groundwater,” says Shoury Reddy Singareddy, Executive Director, Bala Vikasa.

The program began in Ontimamidipally village, Warangal District, in 2015. In 2019, Bala Vikasa extended support to farmers in the suburbs of Hyderabad, following requests from the farmers of Upplingapur village, Medchal. This expansion underscores the program's success and vital role in promoting sustainable agricultural practices and improving farmers' livelihoods. Tirupati P, Program Manager, Water Conservation, Bala Vikasa, adds, “Farm ponds capture and store rainwater, reducing runoff and evaporation losses. Farm ponds lessen groundwater dependence and prevent depletion by providing a reliable water source for irrigation during dry periods.

Additionally, they enhance soil moisture, support groundwater recharge, and promote sustainable farming practices. The stored water can be used for multiple purposes, including livestock and aquaculture, thereby increasing farm productivity and resilience against droughts.” With the support of various CSR partners, Bala Vikasa facilitated the construction of 1275 farm ponds in the suburbs of Hyderabad, creating a water potential of 58.5225 million litres.

Nine years ago, when 23-year-old Saily Lad was walking around London with her father, a casual discussion about CCTV cameras installed at various locations came up. The conversation then pivoted to her research topic, ‘A project for smart cities in small countries.’ This ignited the idea of having a tech-led business in India, which is how Volksara came into existence in 2017. Volksara provides software solutions for monitoring and analysing a city's water supply system.

Water For People (WFP) has been making significant strides globally for over 30 years, starting with the American Water Works Association in the USA, and their work in India has spanned an impactful 15 years. Dr. Arun Deb, the pioneer of WFP’s initiatives in India, played a crucial role in bringing their mission to life here. “We are dedicated to improving water and sanitation through various impactful initiatives. We have developed some solutions for critical issues like arsenic contamination and expanded our focus

They have worked with the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to source 500 Megalitres per day (MLD) drinking water from the Pawana dam to Pune. Of this, 310 MLD sewerage is treated across 16 plants. “Our software helps PCMC bifurcate the treated sewerage data into fertilizer, slurry, and reusable water. Based on the data received, the treated sewerage is reused for gardening, dairy farming (including 10 MLD used by the military to maintain their dairy farm), and cleaning roads. PCMC re-uses approximately 90 MLD of treated sewerage instead of fresh water daily, conserving the valuable resource. In addition, 0.375 tons of MLD slurry are separated from the sewerage and dumped in the Moshi Kachara depot. Once the slurry gets dried, the same gets reused by farmers,” says Saily Prasad Lad, founder.

to integrated water and sanitation activities. The household piped water supply schemes we co-created with local communities provide access to drinking water, reducing wastage through efficient distribution systems,” says Bishwadeep Ghose, Country Head.

The organization has been trying to promote water and sanitation as a service through its impact model called ‘Everyone Forever’ since 2012. A key initiative to make this happen is their partnership with local gram panchayats to establish 'Jalabandhus' or 'Friends of Water.' These hand pump mechanics, trained by WFP, ensure the proper maintenance and repair of community hand pumps, ensuring reliable access to safe water. The success of this model led to its adoption and replication across the State by the West Bengal Government. “To fill the service gap, we identify and train local entrepreneurs who directly provide services through Points of Purchase to households needing water and sanitation services. This market-based approach helps promote micro-entrepreneurs' livelihoods and provides lasting water and sanitation services. So far, we have impacted the lives of around 5 million across the various states we work in India,” adds Ghose.

Safe Water Network, Delhi

Safe Water Network (SWN) is a not-for-profit based in New York with offices in India and Ghana. It was started in India in 2009 to improve public health by providing safe drinking water access to the underserved. They work on different aspects of water, such as water

quality, adequate quantity, and water safety, by enabling local communities to own, operate, and manage their safe drinking water source and training communities in water budgeting and reasonable water use. Poonam Sewak, Trustee & V.P. – Programs and Partnerships, says, “We have installed more 340+ safe water stations which are providing safe water access to more than 1.4 million people in Telangana, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh. These stations provide safe and affordable water to underserved people with little or no access. These Small Water Enterprises (SWEs) are decentralized kiosks, locally owned and operated by women self-help groups and entrepreneurs. The program has generated 914 livelihoods, of which 29% are women.”

A COUNTRY-THEMED RESTO-PUB in Coonoor is an Ode to the Nilgiris

Hopscotch is a resto-pub that combines old-time nostalgia with a contemporary twist. Its eclectic menu is sure to tantalize your taste buds. If you are looking for a great night spot to enjoy Coonoor, Hopscotch, located on the premises of Hotel Vivek, is the best answer. It marries local flavours with a new-age twist, as explored by Bindu Gopal Rao.

The resto-pub is founded by Nikhil and Nitin Suresh, scions of a distinguished hotelier family from Coonoor, and is the answer to a space for vibrant nightlife in Coonoor. The 2200 square foot space with 100 covers is located on the second level, accessible by curvy stairs. The restaurant offers a stunning view of the hills and has a Wild West country charm with classic yet playful furnishings. A cosy sit-out alfresco and smoking area has a wall with interesting wall fixtures and signage that reads, “So, the bar is where I go.” Wrought iron chairs, wood tables, and potted plants give this space a retro vibe. The restaurant has indoor seating and an interesting 'barcade' with fun games like Spin Wheel, Fish the Beer, and the

Hammer Challenge, where you can play to win beers and snacks. The interiors have a warm, cosy vibe, complete with a pool table, bar counter, brick-style walls, and wood furniture with teal and rusthued chairs.

Weekends are buzzing with action, complete with live music. You are treated to soulful music ranging from rock to country, giving you an authentic and engaging nightlife experience. I was told that the pub has various gigs, from retro and blues to rock' n roll, country, indie, and famous DJ sets.

The food and drinks here are a nod to the region with the freshest locally sourced ingredients, echoing the richness of the Nilgiris that make their way into several dishes here. Cofounder Nikhil explains, “We use 100% locally sourced ingredients and have also tied up with organisations like ‘Last Forest,’ an organisation that works closely with the tribes of Nilgiris and helps sell their produce, as well as ‘Ranchers’ who specialise in handmade sausages and cured meat from whom we source our meat from. We also work with Havukal Tea Company, a renowned tea estate and factory based out of Kotagiri, from whom our ingredients for our tranquil tea Hopscotch’s range of teabased cocktails are provided. We have live music all weekend, promoting many local artists and talent again.”

The extensive food and drinks menu has a collection of signature cocktails and freshly made bread from a wood-fired oven. Start with the delectable Leek Soup, which is hearty with notes of cheese and comes with add-ons (chicken, prawn, or bacon), and the delightful Broccoli, Corn & Cheese Salad that sets the tone for the meal. The starters include the interesting Beer Battered Dosa Crisps, an exciting take on the dosa paired with spicy chilli oil. The Cheese stuffed molaga bajji is another good choice as this South Indian style long chilli fritter gets a twist with cream cheese and bacon stuffing. The Brussels Sprouts Tarts is a novel take on a locally sourced classic vegetable infused in a Mangalore ghee roast masala. The Mini Wellingtons with parathas filled with mutton keema is also a good starter option.

The sandwiches here are a British-inspired delight made from freshly baked wood-fired bread with delectable layers. Called Sarnies, these come in different options, but the salt beef sarni, sourced specifically for the pub, and dishes made with naturally harvested wild honey from the Nilgiris forests are a must-have. The menu also features ‘badass burgers,’ pastas, and wood fired pizzas (that can be changed to a calzone at an extra charge). Hopscotch Curry & Rice with Sweet Potato & Carrot, Chicken, or Beef is a Vietnameseinspired delight crafted with vegetable or chicken stock and sweet potatoes. The dish is flavourful, infused with fragrant lemongrass, carrots, and farm-fresh vegetables sourced from local fields and the surrounding farms in the bountiful Hulikal Valley. I also recommend you try the Eggplant Parmesan Steak, one of the vegetarian options on the menu. All steaks can be customised with sauces like Whiskey Pepper Cream, Brown Sauce with Mushrooms, Herb Butter, or Argentinian Chimichurri. You can also choose the accompaniments you would like, including Chilli oil, Mash Potato, Flame Roasted Carrots, Barbecued Brussels Sprouts, Pan Tumbaca, or Rustic Farm Style Bread. The standard preparation for all steaks is medium rare, but you can let the team know if you want a different level of doneness.

The drinks menu is extensive, too, with signature cocktails that include the Mulled Wine Sangria, Hopscotch Hot Toddy, and the Pomme Chuckle, made in collaboration with Havukal Estate, featuring apple-infused tea from the estates. Looking ahead, Hopscotch aims to continuously innovate its menu and entertainment options to keep pace with evolving customer tastes. The resto-pub also plans collaborations with renowned chefs and consultants from prestigious restaurants. Recent partnerships, such as with Chef Darius Madon from Mumbai, highlight their commitment to refining their offerings based on food trials and customer feedback. Do not forget to bookmark and visit Hopscotch on your next visit to Coonoor; it is a culinary journey rooted in local terroir and bound to resonate with your taste buds in more ways than one.

Reviving the art of storytelling: Chitrakathi

After a long day of trekking the Western Ghats around Bhogwe Beach in Sindhudurg, my luxury resort, Coco Shambhala, suggested an unusual activity - an art class. They agreed to it and invited Chetan Gangavane, a third-generation Chitrakathi artist working to revive this art form.

While setting up the art activity, Mr Chetan briefs me about the 11 art forms his community (Thakar) has been involved with for generations. His family currently practices three art forms unique to Maharashtra: String puppetry, Chitrakathi, and Shadow puppetry. "Chitrakathi involves storytelling through art on a 12x15” or 12x18” canvas, which can take 1-3 days to complete, depending on the painting's intricacy. Traditionally, these paintings depicted scenes from mythological epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, accompanied by live singers playing instruments. Therefore, Chitrakathi artists needed not only painting skills but also the ability to sing and play instruments," explains Mr. Chetan.

The once popular Chitrakathi, storytelling through paintings, is brought back to life by the Gangawane family in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg. Ketki Gadre interviews the last family practicing this art form to delve into their motivations and the supporters who have aided them on this journey.

The Thakar community, an Adivasi tribe living in the forests, gained recognition for their art from the erstwhile warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He brought them out of forests and closer to towns and provided them opportunities to perform art shows during festivals. In return, the community assisted the king by spreading messages of social enlightenment through their art. The artists earned their livelihood for many years through food or monetary donations. However, over time, attitudes shifted, and people stopped donating food and began treating them with disrespect.

The Gangavane family is the last Thakar community to practice this centuries-old art form. The rest gave up with changing times and being ridiculed for this art in this digital age. Chetan’s father, Parshuram Gangavane, has been travelling the country, entertaining people with his paintings and puppets. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2021 for his efforts to revive the art form.

To keep up with the new generation's demands, the art form is now digitized and used on handicrafts and user-friendly merchandise items such as bags, coffee mugs, bookmarks, refrigerator magnets, mouse pads, etc. Thanks to the Padma Shri fame, the Gangavane family now has private projects depicting the art form in various showrooms, museums, and tourist sites.

The family has also self-funded a Chitrakathi art museum in their ancestral village of Pinguli in Sindhudurg district and is motivated to keep the legacy going. They are soon opening an art homestay where students and art enthusiasts can attend Chitrakathi art workshops spanning from one day to 4 weeks and stay in the family-run homestay premises. The homestay will give them an authentic Malvan experience with food and culture.

Since art has finally found its place, the people who have supported it throughout the tough times must be appreciative. Art colleges, private art studios, and local resorts have stood with them. On asking the resort why they were supporting a local artist, the founder Giles Knapton, Founder of Coco Shambhala says, “Our aim at Coco Shambhala is to have a positive impact on the local community which welcomes us and a minimal on the environment which supports us.” Indeed, by engaging with guests at the property, the artists have gained exposure and interaction, while visitors have enjoyed an "offbeat tourist experience."

Karthik Purnima Celebrations across India: A Spiritual November Journey

Karthik Purnima, celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Kartik, is a significant and sacred festival in India. It is believed to be a time when the cosmos is spiritually charged, making it an auspicious period of devotion, rituals, and festivals across the country. Karthik Purnima, also known as the Festival of Lights of the Gods, sees millions of devotees flocking to riverbanks, temples, and other holy places, immersing themselves in deep spiritual practices. Dhanush Kumar explores the unique traditions and vibrant festivities observed during Karthik Purnima across different regions of India.

Regional festivities: How India celebrates Karthik Purnima

The way Karthik Purnima is celebrated varies across India, with each region adding its local flavour to the festivities.

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

In Varanasi, Karthik Purnima is synonymous with Dev Deepawali, a grand festival celebrated 15 days after Diwali. The ghats of the Ganges River come alive with thousands of oil lamps illuminating the steps leading down to the water. Devotees take a holy dip in the Ganges, believing it purifies their souls and removes sins. The city also hosts cultural programs, Ganga aarti, and firework displays, creating a mesmerizing sight against the backdrop of the holy river.

Pushkar, Rajasthan

In Rajasthan, Karthik Purnima coincides with the end of the famous Pushkar fair, one of the world’s largest camel and livestock fairs. Pilgrims gather to take a dip in the sacred Pushkar Lake, which is believed to have appeared when a lotus flower fell from Lord Brahma’s hand. The dip is considered highly auspicious and is said to cleanse one’s sins. Alongside the religious rituals, the fair features, cultural performances, and camel races blending spirituality with traditional Rajasthani culture.

Boita Bandana, Odisha

In Odisha, Karthik Purnima is marked by the Boita Bandana festival. This tradition harks back to the ancient maritime heritage of the region, where people commemorate the voyages of their ancestors who traced across Southeast Asia. Small boats made of banana peels, cork, or paper are set afloat in rivers and ponds, symbolizing the ancient trader's seafaring expeditions.

Maharashtra, Tulasi VivahIn Maharashtra, Karthik Purnima often coincides with Tulasi Vivah, a ceremonial marriage between the sacred Tulasi Plant and Lord Krishna. This event marks the end of the four months of Chaturmas, during which marriages and other auspicious activities are prohibited. Devotees also gather along riverbanks to sing devotional songs in praise of Lord Vithoba.

The Sacred Rituals and Practices during Karthik Purnima

Karthik Purnima is a time of deep spiritual practices and religious rituals. Across India, devotees wake up early to perform Karthik Snan, a holy dip taken in rivers, lakes, or seas at sunrise, which is believed to cleanse one’s sins and invite divine blessings. In addition to bathing rituals, devotees light earthen lamps in temples and homes to signify the victory of light over darkness.

The recitation of sacred texts like the Bhagavad Gita and Ramayana, chanting of prayers, and engaging in charity are also common. Many people distribute food, clothes, and money to the needy, as Karthik Purnima is considered a highly auspicious time for performing acts of kindness.
