Vicky Kaushal

on Diverse Film roles

and the Importance of Family Time

Vicky Kaushal, one of Bollywood’s most versatile actors, shares insights on his latest film, his personal experiences, and his relationship with Katrina Kaif in a candid interview with Lipika Varma. He delves into the challenges and joys of his career, his excitement about exploring different genres, and how he balances his busy professional life with personal commitments. Reflecting on his marriage, Vicky talks about their complementary traits and what it means to be a good husband, offering a glimpse into his journey of personal and professional growth.

You are known for playing action and romantic roles; how challenging was this silent role for you?

Whenever you hear bad news in real life, no comedy is involved. It is a very serious affair. You get solace and peace being with your family. They are the ones who share a strong bond with you. My family has always stood beside me, sharing our sorrows and joys together. We have never hidden anything, be it the family struggles, etc. I hail from a much protected upbringing, and I am proud of it.

Having made serious films like Sardar Udham and Sam Bahadur, what other genres are you looking forward to working in?

I still have to work in different genres. The films I watched growing up are especially on my bucket list. My friends are happy watching me in the Tauba Tauba song as they know how happy I feel performing such dancing numbers. Now, they keep telling me-Tera keeda finally nikal gaya. I have so much to do. But it will be seen only when I get such varied films. I like to work in a mix of genres—intense, comedy, and entertaining films. Though I have been associated with intense films like Sam Bahadur and Sardar Udham Singh, you have to shoulder huge responsibilities. Having said that, if I get an intense story, I will not let it go. In comedy films, you can easily explore and spread your wings unlimitedly.

What was Katrina’s reaction to the latest dance number, Tauba Tauba? Any advice from Katrina?

I have not done any formal dance training. I am like a Baraati [marriage crowd] dancer. I dance for my happiness. But while performing a dance number for the camera, you must dance according to the camera's movements. However, my free dancing style this time matched the camera movement. So, this time, I got full marks in appreciation from Katrina for Tauba Tauba. She admired my dancing style and felt that my dancing was cool. She also tagged me as a “Cool dancer” for Tauba Tauba

How have the characteristic differences between you and Katrina been beneficial in progressing your relationship so well? Who is more romantic?

I am very practical, while she is emotionally sensitive and also very intelligent. Thus, our gap fills up very nicely. I have also started seeing things from an emotional point of view from the time she entered my life, and she has started seeing things practically. I am possessive and romantic, but sometimes I express myself overtly, while other times I am not very expressive. She is more romantic at heart. My romanticism varies from time to time.

Being busy professionally, how do you spare some free time for each other?

Our jobs do not follow any structured pattern; we don’t have to attend straight shifts like 9 to 5 or so. Our job has its schedule. It can happen regularly or with gaps. We sometimes work all through the weekends and vice versa. Whatever time we get, we spend together -we greatly value that time. For example, even if we get to spend a week at a stretch, we sit at home and watch TV leisurely while sipping cups of coffee. Doing all this, we get a lot of contentment and a feeling of togetherness.

''

Vicky Kaushal’s response to reports on Katrina Kaif’s pregnancy:

Would you like to share something about your pre-parenting process?

Kaun sa process? These are all speculations. Humne thodi na bola aapko. I am clarifying; it’s all speculation. Iss mein koi sachchayi nahi hai. Whenever it happens, we will inform ourselves. I will be the most excited person on this earth.

On being a good husband:

I am just understanding what a husband means. After 25 years of marriage, people don’t understand the meaning of being a husband. I feel that I have become mature since I married Katrina. She is wise; she has achieved everything on her own individually. We all know she hails from somewhere and has worked hard on her language; she was an outsider, yet she has achieved stardom, which is very difficult. She has seen ups and downs, so her opinion and nazariya [outlook] is much sorted. It feels great as she has achieved all in her life independently.

On giving space to partners:

Every couple should discover what works for them in a relationship. It’s each to their own. Something that may work for one couple may not work for another. I feel that rather than living by examples, especially in relationships, we should always experience and find ways that work for our relationship and implement that in our everyday.

QUACKING LOVE, QUACK MATCH,

FEATHERS AND FLIRTS

Ravi Mittal, founder of the QuackQuack dating app, discusses with Surabhi Goel how he transformed his tech passion into a top Indian app connecting singles nationwide from Hyderabad.

RCan you share your journey with Quack Quack from its inception to its current success? What motivated you to start a dating app in India?

We started QuackQuack in 2010. I had recently dropped out of college at 16 and worked with my father for seven years. Without a social circle, I explored dating websites but found none tailored to India. Seeing this need, I created QuackQuack. In the beginning, I rented a small 2 BHK apartment near my house and started with a team of just two people. Our desktop website went live in 2010, and we gradually began attracting users, with our first paying customer arriving three months after launch. We operated without external funding, growing slowly and steadily. In 2015, we launched our Android and iOS apps, which significantly boosted our traffic.

By 2019, we had reached 5 million users, and the pandemic accelerated our growth as more people turned to mobile apps. Since then, we’ve been adding nearly 1 million users every three months, reaching 32 million users in just four years. Our success stems from fulfilling a personal need and growing sustainably.

avi Mittal, born in Vijayawada and raised in Hyderabad, is the innovative force behind QuackQuack, a leading Indian dating app. Despite dropping out of college at 16 to manage his family’s manufacturing business, Ravi's entrepreneurial spirit and passion for technology propelled him to create QuackQuack. Today, the app operates from Hyderabad with a dedicated team of 26 people, connecting singles across India. Ravi’s journey from a young business manager to a successful tech entrepreneur is a testament to his perseverance and vision. With no formal technical qualifications, he continually experiments with consumer internet applications, learning and adapting to drive QuackQuack’s success. Ravi Mittal’s story highlights how dedication and a willingness to embrace new challenges can turn a simple idea into a thriving business.

Ravi Mittal, founder of the QuackQuack dating app

In the competitive landscape of dating apps, how does Quack Quack differentiate itself from other players in the market?

While many dating apps in India focus on matching people within a specific radius, like Tinder or Bumble, QuackQuack takes a different approach. We primarily target users in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, smaller towns, and rural areas. Our platform allows people to connect with others from anywhere in India, not just within a few kilometers. QuackQuack enables users to make friends across the country. It's common to see someone from Chennai befriending someone from Punjab or a person from Kolkata connecting with someone from Bangalore. Many of our users are not just looking for dates but are open to making new friends. This is especially important for those from smaller towns who may have limited opportunities to interact with the opposite gender. QuackQuack provides a unique space for these connections, setting us apart from more urban-focused dating apps.

How do you navigate the challenges and complexities of running a dating application, especially in terms of user safety and data privacy?

Navigating user safety and data privacy is a top priority for QuackQuack. With the rise of scams in the digital age, including dating apps, we face significant challenges. To address these, we employ a

dedicated team of moderators available 24/7 and use advanced artificial intelligence to enhance security.

Our moderation system is robust, detecting and suspending about 90% of scammers during profile creation. We also adapt to evolving scam patterns, such as those involving cryptocurrencies or fake offers on Telegram or cafes, and we continuously update our methods to stay ahead. It's a constant battle, but our commitment to protecting users remains unwavering.

How has the Indian dating scene changed since QuackQuack launched, and what trends and opportunities do you foresee in your target market?

Since the pandemic, we've seen a dramatic increase in user traffic, with our growth rate shifting from gaining 100,000 users annually to adding 1,000,000 users every three months. The average age of our users has dropped from 29 to 25, reflecting a surge in younger, Gen Z users who prefer dating apps over traditional matrimonial sites. While dating used to be more casual, there's now a noticeable shift towards serious relationships, with many users sharing testimonials about finding their matches and even getting married.

Our target market primarily spans ages 25 to 35, which includes people looking for both dating and potential marriage. However, we're also seeing growing interest from the 18 to 20 age group and are working to

understand their preferences better. Additionally, the perception of dating apps among women is changing; more women are joining, albeit with a focus on privacy and cautious sharing of personal information. This evolving dynamic highlights the increasing acceptance and utility of dating apps across diverse demographics.

What role has user feedback played in shaping Quack Quack, and can you give an example of a significant change implemented based on user suggestions?

User feedback is crucial to our development process at QuackQuack. We continuously gather and analyze user suggestions to enhance our platform and improve engagement. For instance, we once received feedback that our app was using an unusually high amount of data. Surprisingly, this issue wasn't related to video streaming but rather to the frequent loading of images for a highly active user.

After investigating, we discovered that this user's excessive logins and image loading were causing significant data consumption. We addressed this by optimizing our data usage, and reducing the load on our users. This example highlights how we take user feedback seriously, as we believe that one reported issue often represents many unreported ones. We are committed to addressing bugs and implementing improvements based on user input to ensure a better experience for all.

What was the most challenging part of your journey till now?

One of the most challenging aspects of my journey has been shifting perceptions around dating in India. Initially, dating apps faced skepticism and were often viewed negatively. Changing this mindset and gaining acceptance was a significant hurdle. Today, our challenges continue to evolve, with user safety and security being major concerns. Ensuring protection against scammers and maintaining a trustworthy platform remain ongoing challenges. As we move forward, we anticipate new challenges will arise, but adapting to these shifts is part of the entrepreneurial journey.

What are your future goals and plans for Quack Quack? Are there any new features or expansions on the horizon?

Our plans for QuackQuack involve refining and testing new features aimed at enhancing user connections through micro-matching. We're exploring ways to match people based on very specific criteria, such as those at the same airport, attending the same music concert, or from the same college.

Currently, our focus is on strengthening our presence in India, where QuackQuack is the most downloaded dating app, surpassing even Tinder. We believe there is significant growth potential within the Indian market before considering international expansion.

The Timeless Allure of Crystals: Do they help?

Crystals have captivated humanity for millennia, their ethereal beauty and purported mystical properties drawing people from all walks of life. These natural treasures, long admired for their beauty, are experiencing a global resurgence. Let’s explore the reasons behind this trend and dive deep into the world of crystals, examining their allure and purported properties through the eyes of Akshay Gund, a passionate crystal collector in India and founder of Kaivalya—House of Crystals. Mehak Walia, in conversation with Akshay Gund, the founder of Kaivalya - House of Crystals and the passionate crystal collector, about the essence and reason crystals are trending.

Discovering a New Path

Akshay Gund hails from Pune, where his academic journey began with a fascination for animals, leading him to study zoology at Wadia College. This interest in the natural world evolved into a more profound curiosity about digital mapping, which he pursued at the Symbiosis Institute through a postgraduate degree in Geo-Informatics. However, his true calling emerged in a rather unexpected domain—crystals.

"Initially, I started making videos on YouTube, educating people about crystals and minerals and showing them how to find these beauties in nature," Akshay shares. The positive response and the feedback he received highlighted a disturbing trend in the Indian crystal market: exorbitant prices and counterfeit products. This realization sparked the creation of Kaivalya - House of Crystals in 2022, a venture aimed at providing genuine, affordable crystals while educating the public about their true nature.

The Essence of Crystals

As Akshay explains, crystals are semi-precious rocks formed over millions of years through crystallization. This natural phenomenon results in unique structures and formations, much like diamonds. Crystals' allure lies in their beauty, which is why they are trending today. From holistic health and alternative medicine to spiritual practices and aesthetics, crystals have found their place in modern society.

"Many people believe crystals have healing properties and can promote physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing," Akshay notes. This belief, rooted in ancient traditions, sees crystals used for stress relief, energy balancing, and enhancing meditation experiences. Beyond their spiritual applications, crystals are also cherished for their aesthetic appeal, making them popular in fashion and interior design.

A Personal Belief in the Power of Crystals

The efficacy of crystals often hinges on individual belief systems. Akshay acknowledges this, stating, "With one's beliefs, a stone can become a place of worship." Historical evidence supports the longstanding use of crystals, with artifacts like Lapis Lazuli and Malachite found in ancient Egyptian tombs. Akshay's conviction is that nature's gifts, including crystals, are meant for the betterment of humankind.

Encounters with individuals who have experienced the supposed spiritual powers of crystals further bolster his belief. Stories of crystals curing ailments or providing comfort underscore the potential impact these natural formations can have on people's lives. He adds with a warm smile, “I believe that anything which nature provides to humankind is for their betterment. So, it’s up to you to believe or let the crystal do its magic.”

The Thrill of the Hunt

For Akshay, the process of mining crystals is nothing short of exhilarating. "Finding rocks or crystals in their natural habitat gives me pleasure and bliss," he admits. This passion dates back to his childhood fascination with collecting random rocks. His journey into crystal hunting was inspired by videos of enthusiasts abroad and the knowledge shared by local crystal collectors.

discovered rare Cavansite crystals unique to Pune. This lucky find began an ongoing journey of discovery and learning.

Building Trust and Delivering Quality

Selling crystals, Akshay finds, is as much about education as it is about commerce. Through platforms like Instagram (@crystal_hunt_india), he connects with customers worldwide, learning from their experiences and addressing their needs. The ethical sourcing and direct retrieval of crystals from miners ensure the quality and authenticity of his products.

Customer feedback often highlights the high vibrations of the Kaivalya - House of Crystals crystals, a testament to their authenticity and the care taken in their selection. Akshay's commitment to customer satisfaction is evident in the meticulous packaging and prompt delivery of orders, creating a

seamless purchasing experience.

A Message to the Skeptics

Akshay offers a philosophical perspective to those skeptical about crystals' powers. "Everyone has a right to speak about everything good, bad, and worse," he says. Embracing a belief in magic and universal energies, he encourages an open mind, suggesting that "Human minds can only understand science and logic for now. But there are things that human minds can never understand or believe. After all, magic happens when logic fails."

Akshay's journey and work with crystals reveal a blend of passion, belief, and a commitment to bringing genuine, affordable beauty to those who seek it. Through Kaivalya— House of Crystals—he provides exquisite natural formations and fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of these timeless wonders.

NIZAM JEWELLERY

TIMELESS CHARM AND GLAMOUR

The Nizams of Hyderabad were known for their extravagant lifestyle and magnificent jewellery collection. With jewellery worth more than 15,000 crore, Shaik Noor Jahan gives an overview of the Ancient Nizam jewellery collection.

INTRODUCTION OF NIZAM JEWELRY:

The Nizam Jewellery, a treasure belonging to the Nizams of Hyderabad, is a valuable collection and a testament to the opulence and grandeur of a bygone era. The fact that there is jewellery worth over Rs. 15,000 crore under one roof is staggering. Each piece, regardless of its cost, exudes a unique charm and beauty that is bound to leave one speechless with awe and wonder. The jewellery, a legacy of the Asaf Jah Dynasty, established in 1724, has a rich and colourful history that adds to its allure.

In 1972, the jewels of the Nizams of Hyderabad, rumoured to be one of the most exceptional collections, were offered for sale to the Government of India for Rupees 218 crore. The deal was struck. However, after prolonged court cases and colossal expenses, acquiring the jewels took almost 23 years. First, the jewels were shifted to the Reserve Bank of India vaults from the Hong Kong Bank, where they were held earlier. Later, the jewellery was exhibited for the first time at the National Museum in New Delhi for about two months, from September to December 2001.

The 173-piece collection was built over seven generations of the Asaf Jabs, or the Nizams as rulers were called. Although the Nizams ruled over the Deccan, they adopted the lifestyle, court traditions, and administrative practices of the Mughals.

The jewellery, therefore, is a synthesis of Mughal, Deccani, and European influences. It reflects the ethos of a dynasty that originated in the Mughal court, ruled the Deccan, and was a staunch ally of the British Empire.

The Nizams, particularly the seventh and last Nizam–Mir Osman Ali Khan, took great care to preserve this timeless treasure. Despite the challenges of managing a large family and a retinue of servants, they ensured that the jewellery remained intact, a testament to their commitment and reverence for their heritage.

Then, Mir Osman Ali Khan, to safeguard this fabulous wealth, started liquidating a portion of his astronomical fortune and allocated it to a series of trusts. The most unique was the Nizam Jewellery Trust, the only one established by an Indian ruler. This trust was crucial in preserving the Nizam jewellery collection, ensuring it remained intact and protected. He also created a supplementary Jewellery Trust, incorporated in 1951, being the only one established by an Indian ruler. He also created another supplementary Jewellery Trust after allocating gifts to his grandsons in 1952. The trustees kept this treasure of great historical value in the vaults of the Hong Kong Bank.

The present collection comprises a total of 173 items. The number of the pieces is 325 (counting individual

pieces and not as pairs), excluding about 22 unset emeralds and the legendary Jacob diamond. The collection includes sarpanch (bejewelled headgear), necklaces, waist belts, buckles, bracelets, anklets, armlets, toe rings, finger rings, pocket watches, watch chains, buttons, and cufflinks, to name but a few. All the jewels are striking, yet certain pieces stand out for their unique quality, size, colour, and, most importantly, artistry.

Most of the diamonds used in the jewellery came from the mines in Golconda, which the Nizams owned. This is one reason why all the pieces invariably have diamonds that are either uncut or cut into magnificent pieces by the local artisans. The lustre and brilliance of the Golconda diamonds are most apparent in the sarpanchs, especially those worn over the headgear. These are in gold, set with diamonds, emerald beads, and cabochon rubies. Very special sarpanchs are made for a young

It is also known as an aigrette, a turban ornament that significant Hindu, Sikh, and Muslim princes wore. Sar means head or front, and pech means screw. Hence, the word Sarpech literally means that which is screwed onto the front (of the turban).

The Sarpech, adorned by the Nizam, was made in the 18th to 19th centuries. The jewels are set in open-back mounts, combining Indian and European design sensibilities. The Columbian emeralds are representative of Nizam’s fascination for the gem, which makes up a large part of the jewellery collection.

The government bought a sarpech-yakhoot-wakanval-almas set in gold, with rubies (110 ct) and diamonds (111 ct)—total weight 145.65 gm – for INR 20 million.

prince, Mahabub Ali, who ascended the throne. One such unique sarpanch is the ‘Bachkana sarpanch,’ which has been chosen to be the logo of the exhibition. With its exquisite craftsmanship and use of Golconda diamonds, this piece holds a significant place in the Nizam jewellery collection. A solitaire set in gold, with five smaller diamonds on each side, has on its top an exquisite bird crafted with tiny diamonds for its plumage and ruby as its eye. Interestingly, the bird holds a tiny ‘taveez’ (lucky charm) in its beak.

Among the exhibited pieces, the imperial diamond, known as the Jacob diamond, is a fabulous piece that stands out. Weighing 184.75 carats, this sparkling beauty is double the size of the Koh-i-Noor diamond and is said to be the seventh largest in the world. It was acquired by the sixth Nizam, Mir Mahabub Ali Pasha, in 1891 from a Jewish trader, A.K. Jacob, hence the name. This diamond's sheer size and brilliance are sure to leave any viewer in awe.

PEARLS AND DIAMONDS

The Nizam of Hyderabad had the most expansive collection of Natural Pearls jewellery. It is believed that the pearls that he had accumulated could fill up the ‘Olympic Size Pool.’ The story goes that the Nizam loved natural pearls, so when the pearl dealers came to Hyderabad along with their collection to offer, each pearl was of a different colour, shape, size, and make. Therefore, the Nizam kept collecting natural pearls until they could be symmetrically crafted into an ornament. This created a market of pearls in Hyderabad, giving it the title ‘City of Pearls.’ Even today, Hyderabad is the trading market for Natural Basra Pearls.

BELTS

After the demise of the Mughal empire, the Nizams adopted a European lifestyle and often wore Western-influenced clothes such as high-collared coats. This allowed the Nizams fewer opportunities to display their opulent jewels. Hence, they wore adornments like belts or elaborate headgear, which became an indispensable part of their jewellery collection. It was mandatory in the Nizams' court to wear a belt around their jama

The Nizam's time was as valuable as his jewels, and he carried his time in his pocket!

Nizam of Hyderabad wore his Pocket Watch with a lot of grace, with multiple attached chains to allow them to be secured to a waistcoat, lapel, or belt loops to prevent them from falling loose. The pocket watch and the chains had a European influence between the 18th and 19th centuries. European influences, essentially from Paris and London, were influential in the early 20th century. One of the instances can be seen in the use of pocket watches, which ultimately became a part of the ceremonial regalia of Indian royalty. In the late 19th century, Calcutta had chains decorated with Golconda diamonds and natural pearls, and the dial was embellished with diamond and enamel work.

EARRINGS (JHUMKA)

THE JACOB DIAMOND

Nizam Jhumkas, also known as Nizam earrings, originate from the Nizams of Hyderabad, India, during the 18th and 19th centuries. They were favoured by the royal women of the Nizam dynasty, known for their opulent and intricate jewellery. They originated in the royal courts of the Nizams of Hyderabad, India. These elaborate and intricately designed earrings symbolized wealth, status, and prestige. They typically feature a combination of precious metals like gold or silver, adorned with precious gemstones such as diamonds, emeralds, rubies, and pearls.

The Nizam of Hyderabad, one of the wealthiest monarchs in Indian history, was renowned for patronizing the arts and luxury items, including jewellery. Nizam jhumkas were often commissioned by the royal family and gifted to court members as a mark of favour or bestowed upon brides as part of their dowry.

Over time, Nizam jhumkas have become famous beyond the confines of the royal court and are now coveted by women for special occasions such as weddings, festivals, and other celebrations. They continue to be crafted by skilled artisans in Hyderabad and are cherished as timeless pieces of traditional Indian jewellery, blending heritage with contemporary elegance.

One of the famed pieces that belonged to the Nizam of Hyderabad is The Jacob Diamond. The story goes when Osman Ali Khan found the diamond in the toe of his father’s shoe at the Chowmahalla Palace; he used it as a paperweight for a long time until the diamond’s actual value was realized. The Jacob Diamond, also known as the ‘Imperial Diamond’ or ‘Victoria Diamond,’ was first discovered in the Kimberly mines of South Africa and was assumed to be one of the biggest diamonds in the world at that time, weighing approximately 457.5 cts.

In the 19th century, it was first smuggled from London to Amsterdam, where it was cut into a slightly oval-shaped, 58-faceted diamond weighing 184.50cts. After several negotiations and a court case later, the diamond was sold to Nizam VI by Malcolm Jacob from Simla in 1892. It is a colourless diamond from India (or from the Golconda mines) ranked as the fifth-biggest polished diamond in the world. The government of India bought it from the last Nizam of the Hyderabad State, Mir Osman Ali Khan, for an estimated $US13 million in 1995.

ZADAVI LACHA OR CHINTAK – CHOKER

These chokers were crafted with precious gemstones and Golconda diamonds during the 18th and 20th centuries.

ARMBANDS

‘Bajuband’ or Armlets, also known as Ananta or Angada, are a type of bracelet worn on the upper part of the arm. Initially, this piece of jewellery was only worn by men as a masculine accessory. However, it is also adorned by women.

The ‘Zadavi Lacha or Chintak’ was worn along with the ‘Jugni’ necklace. Jugni is a pendant that means Fireflies. The back side is a treat for the eyes, with beautiful white, red, and green uncut work, owned by Karvani Meenakari in the 18th century.

ANKLETS

Women wore anklets to indicate their marital status. They were gifted to the bride by the groom as a symbol of love and the wish to become her official husband.

EMERALD NECKLACE

Nizam of Hyderabad has left a rich legacy for the country that shares beautiful stories about rich Indian artistry and unmatched lifestyle. Also known as ‘Pachchikam,’ made in silver & gold, embellished with Emeralds, Diamonds, and Pearls. Pachchikam in Hindi means peeche or back; this type of jewellery has gold on the rear and silver in front. The overall appearance of Pachchikam comes across as rather delicate and unfinished. highly malleable and closely resembling platinum, is used in the craftsmanship. The craft originates from Gujarat and Kutch, though it was initially inspired by early European designs worn by the nobility in the 16th century. A few pieces in Nizam’s collection are attributed to this technique to show the diamonds' brilliance.

CHOTI TAVEEZ

Begums adorned Choti Taveez (Braid amulet) from the early 19th century to protect themselves from evil eyes. Choti means Braid. TAVEEZ means amulet. Its square, studded with Golconda flat-cut diamonds on both sides. It is strung on Natural Pearl and suspended from the hair, lying over the right shoulder. All the women of the family wore Choti Taveez. Nowadays, the Choti Taveez are worn as pendants.

The Choti Taveez is a distinctive ornament worn on the turban or headgear of the Nizam, symbolizing their authority and status. These jewels were not only exquisite pieces of craftsmanship but also served as symbols of power, wealth, and prestige for the Nizams.

The Choti Taveez, in particular, was believed to possess mystical properties and was often adorned with precious gemstones and intricate designs, adding to its allure and significance.

SICCA BAR 2.0:

Sip, Savour, and Socialize in Style!

Sicca Bar: Coffee & Cocktails, the lobby-level lounge bar at The Park Hyderabad, was recently unveiled to the city notables in an upgraded 2.0 version, post a Covid-induced break. At 30 covers (besides al fresco seating), Sicca Bar is both intimate and exclusive, with its ambience designed by the UK-based Conran and Partners, known for their minimalist and contemporary décor. Swati Sucharita brings you the lowdown on Sicca Bar 2.0, which stands out for its updated smorgasbord menu.

In a nod to Hyderabad’s Nizami culture, Sicca Bar features currency motifs (the Hindi or Urdu word for a coin is Sicca) prominently on its tiles, as well as the bar counters and walls, which strike out distinctly with a pop of colour and design in the otherwise minimalist space. The currency motifs are screen-printed with images of the Rupaiah, the erstwhile Indian currency note, as well as the Osmania Sicca, which was Hyderabad’s currency note minted by the Nizam of Hyderabad and which remained legal tender alongside the Indian currency note until 1951.

Sicca works as a coffee lounge for crisp business meetings or more informal lunches with friends and family over artisanal coffees and short eats in the afternoons. At the same time, it transforms into a plush bar in the evenings for serious socializing over well-crafted cocktails.

The bar, set against the backdrop of Oakwood veneer walls and the stunning origami tables designed by Gunjan Gupta from Delhi, is wellstocked with premium spirits and fine cigars, in keeping with its luxe profile. While theme evenings and music nights are being planned, lounge bar music plays at Sicca.

The beverages menu is mostly customized, although, among the ones I tried from the menu, I quite liked the Lizzy Lake, which is a gin, pineapple infusion, and egg white concoction that worked well on my palate for the tangy notes of fresh pineapple juice. Clover Club, a shaken cocktail with gin, lemon juice, raspberry syrup, and egg white, tasted as good as it looked, and so did Vibrant Sunshine, made of tequila, orange juice, and grenadine.

Vibrant Sunrise

Smorgasbord Options at SICCA

On the food menu are cheese boards, sushi, smorgasbord (open Med-style sandwiches primarily, as well as a few salads), bowls of ravioli, and tortellini. Getting my undivided attention was the Shrimp with Marie Rose Sauce on Rye Bread, the Truffle Cocktail Eggs Snow on Toasted Parmesan Thyme Wheat Slice, and the Smoked Salmon & Goat Cheese & Caper Berry with Flying Fish Caviar on multigrain Bread. Chicken lovers shouldn’t miss Cajun Spice Pulled Chicken with Rye Bread.

Vegetarians need not despair; there are great options like Burnt Garlic with Wild Mushrooms and bokchoy with Tofu on Multigrain bread.

What I found outstanding, however, were the Mutton Rogan Josh Ravioli, the Methi Chaman Tortellini, and the Tuna Tartare with Sesame Dressing. There is a limited dessert menu, too, from which the Tiramisu is worth trying as it's perfect in the classic old way.

DECODING DISORDERS

Binge Eating Disorder is characterized by recurrent episodes of consuming large quantities of food in a short period, accompanied by a feeling of loss of control. This behaviour often leads to significant distress and can have adverse effects on both physical and emotional well-being. “Anorexia nervosa is characterized by an intense fear of gaining weight and a distorted body image, resulting in extreme calorie restriction and often excessive exercise or purging behaviours. Bulimia nervosa involves cycles of binge eating and then ridding the body of the extra food (purging) by self-induced vomiting, taking laxatives or diuretics, fasting,

Eating disorders are mental health conditions marked by an intense preoccupation with food and weight, which can pose serious health risks. Conditions such as binge eating, anorexia, and bulimia can significantly harm one's health and require prompt attention and treatment. Bindu Gopal Rao explores these disorders with insights from experts and health professionals to shed light on their effects and how to address them effectively.

exercising excessively, or a combination of these. People with bulimia nervosa usually have a normal weight. In contrast, people with anorexia are usually underweight,” explains D. Bindoo Jadhav, Professor & Head of the Department of Psychiatry, K. J. Somaiya Medical College & Hospital, Sion, Mumbai.

"Anorexia involves extreme calorie restriction due to an intense fear of weight gain, while bulimia includes binge eating followed by purging."

THE CAUSES

Binge eating disorder, anorexia nervosa, and bulimia nervosa are all complex mental health conditions with various underlying reasons. Binge eating disorder often stems from emotional triggers like stress or boredom, alongside restrictive dieting practices or genetic predispositions. “Anorexia nervosa commonly arises from intense body image issues, societal pressure for thinness, and a desire for control over one's life. Genetics and biological factors may also contribute. Bulimia nervosa frequently develops as a coping mechanism for stress or negative emotions, often triggered by dissatisfaction with one's body.

Additionally, cycles of dieting followed by binge eating episodes can play a role. These disorders are multifaceted, influenced by a combination of psychological, social, and biological factors unique to everyone,” says Garima Dev Verman, Certified Nutritionist

and Medical Content Analyst, The Healthy Indian Project (THIP) - A Health Literacy Platform. Overemphasis on sleek body type leads to many practices by women, which may end up in an eating disorder. Dr. Pooja Pushkarna, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad, adds, “Three factors play a role in the onset of eating disordersgenetic, environmental, and social factors. Genetic factors are when it

"Genetic, environmental, and social factors all contribute to the onset of eating disorders. Media portrayal of ideal body types can significantly impact this."

is inherited by one or both parents. Environmental factors include the kind of surroundings and culture a patient lives in. For instance, movies gave many female viewers the idea that zero figure is the ideal body type, which became the norm for many. This is how the environment around patients leads to eating disorders. Furthermore, the societal expectations of the way a woman should look is another factor leading to eating disorders.”

WATCH OUT

Eating disorders can manifest in various ways, but some general warning signs can be helpful across different conditions. For

binge eating disorder, watch out for someone rapidly consuming large amounts of food even when not hungry, hiding or stockpiling food, and experiencing intense shame or guilt after eating. “Bulimia Nervosa can show signs like frequent disappearances of large amounts of food, repeated trips to the bathroom after meals, physical signs of selfinduced vomiting (swollen cheeks or damaged teeth), and misuse of laxatives or diuretics. Remember, these are just some potential signs, and the severity can vary,” says Avneet Bhatia, CEO and Founder of NatureFit.

NEGATIVE IMPACT

Eating disorders are increasingly prevalent today, accompanied by the emergence of many non-communicable disorders. Emotional volatility and deeply buried traumatic memories often underlie eating disorders, leading to overeating and undernourishment due to unhealthy food habits. Dr Mayur Agrawal, endocrinologist and co-founder of health-tech start-up DocOsage, says, “Eating disorders can have severe physical, emotional, and social consequences. Physical complications include malnutrition, electrolyte imbalances, gastrointestinal issues, osteoporosis, and, in severe cases, organ failure or death.

Psychological effects like depression, anxiety, low selfesteem, and social consequences can lead to difficult relationships, isolation, and difficulties in work or school.” Dr. Karthiyayini Mahadevan, Head of Wellness and Wellbeing, Columbia Pacific Communities, adds, “Overweight and obesity, along with impaired glucose metabolism resulting in type II diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, and cardiovascular diseases, are common health issues. Physical inactivity due to excess weight also contributes to musculoskeletal problems, leading to strain on the skeletal frame.”

TAKE CARE

It is essential to educate the youth, especially about the importance of a good and healthy body. “Our youth is so much under pressure for certain physical appearance and under pressure to be accepted that they put themselves through this mental stress. We need to address these issues very sensitively. It needs counselling with healthy eating habits to get them out of this,” says Dr. Parina Joshi, HOD, Dietician and Nutrition, Surya Hospital, Mumbai. Dietician Prernna Kalra adds, “Now coming to solving the biggest issue of eating disorder in adults, especially in teenage, we need to focus on giving counselling and therapy sessions to the patient through dieticians, psychiatrists, doctors, family members wholeheartedly support, and with the help of some medications. This wouldn't be a one-day process; patients will need time, support, patience, and love to overcome this disorder.” As eating disorders can affect a patient physically and psychologically, medication is one of the options for treatment. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) or psychotherapy combined with medication can also help.

Embrace Natural Beauty: Alternatives to Chemical Hair Treatments

The quest for beautiful, healthy hair often leads us to chemical treatments that promise quick results but can damage our hair in the long run. Fortunately, nature provides numerous alternatives that nourish and revitalize your hair without causing harmful side effects. Dhanush Kumar lists eight natural alternatives to chemical hair treatments, each with unique benefits to help achieve healthy locks.

2. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is celebrated for its soothing qualities, making it an effective natural conditioner. It contains proteolytic enzymes that help repair dead skin cells on the scalp, fostering healthy hair growth. Aloe Vera can also help reduce dandruff and maintain the pH balance of your hair. Use fresh aloe Vera gel as a conditioner shampoo for soft and manageable hair.

1. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is packed with nutrients that offer deep nourishment for hair. Its high fatty acid content allows it to penetrate the hair shaft, preventing protein loss and helping to keep hair strong and healthy. Regularly using coconut oil can reduce frizz, add shine, and avoid split ends. For best results, apply it as a pre-wash treatment or a leave-in conditioner.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar, a scalp superhero, is a fantastic natural alternative for clarifying and balancing your scalp. It's a pro at removing product build up, restoring the scalp’s natural pH level, and adding shine to your hair. Just mix equal parts of ACV and water and use it as a rinse after shampooing. This treatment will leave your hair feeling fresh, smooth, and shiny. 4. Henna

4. Henna

Henna is a natural plant-based dye that can add a rich, reddish-brown colour to your hair without the damaging effects of chemical dyes. It also strengthens and conditions your hair, reducing breakage and enhancing shine. Mix henna powder with water to form a paste, apply it to your hair, and leave it on for a few hours before rinsing for a vibrant, natural colour.

6. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is recognized for its antifungal and antibacterial properties, making it an excellent remedy for scalp issues like dandruff and itching. It aids in unclogging hair follicles and nourishing the roots, which supports healthy hair growth. Mix a few drops of tea tree oil with a carrier oil, such as coconut or olive oil, and massage the blend into your scalp to maintain its health and cleanliness.

5. Argan Oil

Argan oil, often called liquid gold, is rich in antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and vitamin E. It hydrates and softens hair, making it more manageable and reducing frizz. Regular use of argan oil can also protect hair from heat damage and environmental stressors. Apply a few drops to damp or dry hair to keep it silky and smooth.

7. Yogurt

Yogurt is a natural protein and lactic acid source that strengthens and moisturizes your hair. It helps repair damage, reduce hair fall, and improve hair texture. Apply plain yogurt to your hair and scalp as a mask, leave it only for 20-30 minutes, and rinse thoroughly for smooth and shiny hair.

8. Hibiscus

Hibiscus is a natural treatment recognized for encouraging hair growth and reducing hair loss. Packed with Vitamins A and C, amino acids, and various nutrients, it supports the health of hair follicles. To use it, create a paste from hibiscus flowers and leaves, apply it to your hair and scalp, and let it sit for 30-60 minutes before rinsing. This can help foster healthy hair growth and impart a natural shine.

A Slice of Turkey

A Mediterranean Breakfast Feast

Turkish cuisine has won many fans in India, from the sweet allure of baklava to the popular doner kebabs. Yet, the essence of Turkish culture is embodied in ‘Kahvalti,’ or the first meal of the day. This light but nourishing spread includes an array of breads, eggs, jams, and cheeses, offering a wholesome start to the day. Deepa Natarajan Lobo explores this cherished tradition, revealing its significance and delights.

If you wish to experience this without having to fly to Turkey, you are in for a treat as the famous Turkish restaurant Öz by Kebapci has launched India’s first-ever Kahlvati. This exclusive offering seamlessly blends the traditional with a modern flair and is available only on Sundays between 8 am and 12 pm.

Offering a range of vegetarian and non-vegetarian delights, the breakfast includes several nourishing and indulgent options that use the best ingredients imported straight from the heart of Eastern Turkey. These include spices, cheese for kunafa, pistachios, and flour, all of which are of the highest quality and ensure a delightful dining experience.

Warm Bread and Eggy Delights:

The menu at Öz by Kebapci offers a wide variety of warm bread and eggy delights, promising a diverse and exciting culinary experience.

The backbone of Kahvalti at Öz is a range of freshly baked bread (from Simit/Gevrek to classic Pita) differing in softness, saltiness, and sharpness. Be it the delicate layers of Mahalama's phyllo dough or the traditional Turkish flatbread Pide topped with cheese, meats and veggies (ala pizza!), these are light yet make for a satisfying meal.

Another offering is the mini version of the traditional Borek, a Turkish pastry made from thin layers of dough filled with various ingredients such as cheese, meat, or vegetables. The Mini Borek is a bite-sized version of this crispy pastry with aromatic fillings, perfect as a snack or an appetizer.

Egg lovers can enjoy Menemen, a traditional Turkish dish made by sautéing tomatoes and green peppers with spices until they are soft and then combining them with whisked eggs to create a slightly runny scramble.

Regal Platters and Sumptuous Dips

If you like to keep things light, the platter serving fresh, juicy fruits, dry fruits, crispy cherry tomatoes, and cucumbers is just for you! Dunk the veggies in one of the myriad dips accompanying, such as the creamy yogurt-based Labneh or the red capsicum-based Muhammara, and you have a refreshing start to your

lazy Sunday. Another enjoyable dip on the menu is Mıhlama, a traditional Turkish dish from the Black Sea region, made with cornmeal, butter, and local melting cheese, cooked until creamy and stretchy. These dips are carefully selected to complement the fresh and juicy fruits, creating a perfect balance of flavours.

Sweet Fixes

The light, airy, and not-too-sweet Kaymak (cream) with honey served chilled with crunchy bread and the aromatic Çai, the traditional Turkish tea, are the perfect culmination to the heavy meal.

The idea behind Kahlvati was to introduce India to the whole Turkish Breakfast experience, specifically, the one from the regions of Eastern Turkey, believe Aasim Shah, Founder and Adeeb Shah, Co-Founder, Kofteci Foodkrafts Pvt. Ltd. “We wanted to show that Turkish breakfast is more than just Turkish Eggs and have been working on this menu from about six to eight months perfecting the right array of dishes that would be light, refreshing and flavourful for our guests to enjoy in the mornings,” they say. “The Eastern region of Turkey is high on traditional breakfasts such as Kaymak with honey, various fresh fruit jams, cheese, bread, cold mezze, and Menemen. Hence, the entire spread is chosen carefully to form a perfect experience altogether,” they sum up.

Hidden in the heart of Madhya Pradesh, India, lies the enigmatic Kakanmath Temple, a testament to ancient architectural brilliance and supernatural folklore. This 11th-century marvel, shrouded in mystery and legend, has captivated visitors for centuries with its intricate design and haunting beauty. Among the many tales surrounding its creation, one particularly chilling story suggests that supernatural forces constructed the temple overnight. Dhanush Kumar takes you on a journey to unravel the secrets of this architectural wonder.

THE MYSTERIOUS KAKANMATH TEMPLE: BUILT BY GHOSTS OVERNIGHT?

The Magnificent Kakanmath Temple

Nestled in the small village of Sihoniya in the Morena district of Madhya Pradesh, the Kakanmath Temple stands as a silent sentinel to a bygone era. Built during the reign of the Kachchhapaghata dynasty in the 11th century, this ancient structure is dedicated to Lord Shiva and showcases the pinnacle of medieval Indian architecture.

The temple’s most striking feature is its soaring shikhara, which once reached 100 feet. Though time and natural elements have taken their toll, reducing its height to about 40 feet, the temple’s grandeur remains undeniable. The intricate carvings, stunning sculptures, and perfect proportions speak volumes about the skill and artistry of its creators.

The Legend of Overnight Construction.

Local folklore weaves a fascinating tale around the creation of the Kakanmath Temple. According to legend, the temple was commissioned by a devout king who wished to build the grandest shrine to Lord Shiva in his kingdom. However, the scale and complexity of the project posed significant challenges. The story goes that the king sought divine intervention, desperate to realize his vision. In his dream, Lord Shiva appeared to him and promised to complete the temple overnight with the help of celestial architects and spirits. The condition was that no human should witness the construction process.

The king agreed and ordered all citizens to remain indoors that night. However, as with many such legends, human curiosity intervened. Unable to contain his excitement, a young boy peeked out his window to witness the miraculous construction.

The moment the boy saw the supernatural builders, they vanished, leaving the temple nearly complete but for the final touches. To this day, visitors can see evidence of the temple's unfinished state, with some carvings left incomplete and certain areas appearing rough and unpolished. These imperfections are often pointed to as proof of the ghostly legend and the consequences of human interference in divine work.

The legend of ghosts building the temple is captivating, so archaeological studies provide a more grounded explanation for its construction. Excavations and studies suggest that the temple was indeed a product of meticulous planning and execution by skilled artisans over some time.

Casting, Success, and Future on Nag Ashwin KALKI 2898 AD:

In sci-fi cinema, the epic Kalki 2898 AD has emerged as a box office sensation, garnering widespread acclaim from fans and critics alike. This cinematic marvel features Prabhas as Bhairav, a bounty hunter from Kashi, and Deepika as SU-M80, a pregnant test subject known as Sumathi. Legendary actors Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan portray Ashwatthama and Supreme Yaskin, respectively. Released in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi, the film is available in 2D and 3D formats. Director Nag Ashwin delves into the starstudded casting, the film's success, and future projects in his interview with Lipika Varma

How does receiving such a fantastic response at the box office as a filmmaker feel?

I am incredibly grateful that we had the right casting and that the audiences have embraced and approved the film. Their positive response to the cast and other aspects of the movie is deeply satisfying.

With the entry of the millennium star Amitabh Bachchan, do you agree he elevates the film to another level?

Playing Ashwatthama, he elevates the film to another level. He is a legend and makes this character believe that the character was almost tailor-made for him. He brings it alive on the screen. He was my first option, and I don't think whoever else I may have thought of would have said no.

How much time went into roping in Shri Amitabh Bachchan?

He was the first person we approached. We followed the regular process -pitching and then narrating the script, his role, and some discussions. Nothing more or less went into getting him on board.

The baby will continue to be in the womb. We will begin from where we have left. We will not show up in the next

Did Kamal Haasan take almost a year [according to reports] to say yes to his character? What were his hiccups?

Kamal was the last person we approached. We wanted to be sure of the role we offered him, so we took a little time, but he agreed to be on board. Also, frankly speaking, he is Kamal Haasan [smiles]. He needed to be convinced before coming on board. Thus, it took that much time.

Being successful has always been your goal, starting with your first film, Nenu Meeku Telusa, as an assistant director. Now, you are set to give tough competition to the makers globally. With this sci-fi attempt, are you aiming for the Oscars? Not really. We are just enjoying this moment for whatever we have achieved. In my opinion, every movie has its fate, and we are lucky that every movie we have attempted has reached the audiences the way we wanted. We tried to make Kalki 2898 the same way, and achieving what we were set out for feels excellent.

The South directors and filmmakers have turned the tables. Earlier Bollywood films brought global recognition, but now South makers are taking India to a worldwide level.

It’s always the story that has to work. It also depends on the story the director or writer wants to show. He may belong anywhere in the nation. Also, I don’t think that language matters. Films have come a long way from here for the past three years. It’s just a cycle.

Did you expect this film to fall in place with every sphere of filmmaking so very adequately?

It took a lot of work, for sure. Undeniably, the team worked nonstop, no matter how long. Looking at the people's responses, we feel pretty satisfied, especially when people embellish this film with adjectives like “never seen before” and more.

Nag Ashwin’s Kalki-2898 is bringing laurels and a booty bag for Vyjayanthi movies against the invested amount. What's their reaction?

It’s always the story that has to work. It also depends on the story the director or writer wants to show. He may belong anywhere in the nation. Also, I don’t think that language matters.

Vyjayanthi movies always back something new and risky. They are all pleased that every rupee they invest is not only coming back with loads of love from one and all. It’s a very satisfying moment for everyone.

Single theatre owners, especially Gaiety—Galaxy [Mumbai] owner Manoj Desai, were unhappy with the stepbrother's treatment of them because they couldn’t book tickets for Kalki 2898 in advance. What would you say to this?

I am not aware of such things. The producers and the distributors handle this sphere.

Do you agree that when films are made with such exorbitant budgets, there is a vast recovery pressure on the producers/distributors?

Of course, it matters a lot, especially with a movie of this size; they must ensure it reaches every corner. India is a massive country with vast potential. Very rarely do we harness even half of it. We are looking forward to movies with increasing box office potential.

Is Vyjayanthi Films happy with the recovery to this day?

We are in the process of getting a break even. I think most people are pretty confident of the profit. But it’s just been a week, so we are happy now.

Well, you are doing Kalki's second part, as it suggests. Who will be your Kalki?

It’s there in the womb [of Deepika Padukone]. The baby will continue to be in the womb. We will begin from where we have left.
