Harmonizing The Future

Hoodstock: the Hood Canal Music & Arts Festival Has Incredible Impact on Youth Music Education in Mason County

Since its inception in 2018, the Hood Canal Music & Arts Festival (Hoodstock) has been more than just a weekend of melodies and masterpieces. Nestled in the heart of Mason County, this festival has become a beacon of hope and inspiration for youth music education, transforming the local community and enriching the lives of young aspiring musicians.

The festival, renowned for its vibrant showcase of talented musicians and local artisans, has consistently emphasized the importance of supporting music education in our schools. It serves as a reminder that music is not just an art form but a vital component of a well-rounded education. The festival's commitment to this cause has sparked a movement, encouraging local schools and communities to invest in the musical futures of their students.

One of the festival's most significant achievements was announced recently: Chris Eakes, a beloved local musician, will be joining the Hood Canal School as a guitar instructor. This appointment marks a pivotal moment for the school and the community, as it underscores the festival's dedication to nurturing young talent and providing students with access to quality music education.

Chris Eakes' involvement is a testament to the festival's impact. A multi-instrumentalist from Buffalo, NY, Chris was a contestant in Season 4 of American Idol and has been a professional singer for most of his life. His musical journey has taken him from coast to coast, where he creates songs and soundscapes using his guitar and technology. Chris's return to Washington in 2018 was marked by his performance at the first Hoodstock, where founders Kelli Kohout and Shannon Crabb Stanton committed to supporting talented musicians like Chris and embedding them in the community to serve as mentors to the youth.

The goal of Hoodstock and Kelli and Shannon's dream was realized with the announcement of Chris in his new role. The vision of integrating musicians into the community to inspire and educate young minds came to fruition, further solidifying the festival's impact on local music education.

In 2022, Hoodstock gained another partner in Lance Gibbon, the Hood Canal School Superintendent. A musician himself, Lance is a visionary who understands the importance of providing opportunities for youth to explore their creative side within the school environment. His partnership with the festival has strengthened the community's commitment to fostering a love for music among its young residents.

The festival's influence extends beyond the classroom. By raising awareness about the importance of music education, it has galvanized support from local businesses, organizations, and individuals. This collective effort has resulted in increased funding for music programs, the acquisition of new instruments, and the creation of scholarships for aspiring young musicians.

Moreover, the festival has become a platform for young artists to perform and gain exposure, providing them with opportunities to collaborate with seasoned musicians. In 2024 the Carlile Family Band, consisting of musicians ranging from age 7 to 16, opened up the festival on the water stage. These young musicians have been raised around music their whole lives – fun fact: their father is Brandi Carlile's brother!

As the Hoodstock continues to grow, its impact on youth music education in Mason County becomes increasingly impactful. Serving as a shining example of how a community can come together to support and celebrate the arts, it will continue to ensure that music remains an integral part of our children's education.

In a world where the arts often struggle for recognition and funding, Hoodstock stands as a testament to the power of music to unite, inspire, and transform. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, families, and friends who have supported Hoodstock, its legacy will echo through the halls of Mason County schools for generations to come, harmonizing the future of our youth with the timeless beauty of music.

Hoodstock will be held on August 15-16 in Union, Washington. Mark your calendars for another unforgettable celebration of music, art, and community spirit.
