Outdoor Recreation Abounds in Summer

Summer brings a noticeable increase in visitors to Mason County, as travelers and locals take advantage of longer days and outdoor opportunities. Many begin their adventure at the Hoodsport Visitor Information Center, which is open year-round and staffed by the Chamber’s volunteers. The center provides trail maps, area guides, and recommendations for everything from day hikes to restaurants, serving as a helpful resource for those exploring the Hood Canal region.

Located just outside Hoodsport, the Staircase area of Olympic National Park remains one of the most popular access points for hiking. The Staircase Rapids Loop offers a relatively easy walk through old-growth forest, while trails like Flapjack Lakes, Wagonwheel Lake, Mount Ellinor, and Mount Rose provide more challenging options with rewarding views. These trailheads continue to attract both casual hikers and experienced adventurers looking to explore the southern Olympics.

For those interested in something different, YSS Dive hosts a nighttime diving program at Sund Rock Marine Preserve. This guided experience gives certified divers a rare opportunity to observe marine life after dark and continues to grow in popularity. Meanwhile, Vance Creek Railriders provides a unique spin on trails and Skydive Kapowsin offers unparalleled thrills.

Recreation in Mason County isn’t limited to hiking and diving. Disc golf, paddling, camping, and shoreline access are available throughout the area’s many parks and public lands, offering plenty of options for visitors of all interests and abilities. Whether someone is planning their first visit or looking for a new place to explore, the visitor information centers continue to play an important role in connecting people to the natural places that make Mason County special.
