I am privileged to be a member of Scioto Country Club and enjoy its facilities, services, and camaraderie. The engaging relationships formed with fellow members and staff make for a compelling member experience. I am honored to contribute, as many have selflessly in the past, to our Board of Trustees; especially as it pertains to serving as president for the coming months.
What is the origin of the word club? The primary definition, and first usage of the word according to The Oxford English Dictionary (O.E.D.), is a heavy stick or staff for use as a weapon. It is not until the fifteenth entry, the O.E.D. describes a different club; an association of persons, (admittance into which is usually guarded by ballot) formed mainly for social purposes, and having a building appropriated to the exclusive use of the members and always open to them as a place of resort. Clubs, in this sense, were a prominent feature of English life in the 17th and 18th century. In fact, the “Best Club in London” was the jocular name for the House of Commons. Later, near the end of the 19th century, the term country club appeared and connoted an establishment with extensive grounds, often including a golf course. It was usually in a suburban area providing a wealthy or leisured lifestyle.
By definition, Scioto is not a cudgel or an instrument to aid malevolence. It is clearly an association of persons (i.e., a club) and more specifically it is a country club with extensive grounds for athletic and social engagement. While the O.E.D. is instructive and authoritative according to linguists, a dictionary is uninformative about patterns of behavior or the social mores of a group of people. Those practices create an atmosphere, an ethos, a culture. Previous leaders of Scioto Country Club have codified an aspirational club culture characterized by mutual respect for all. As an extension the board of trustees have established
a traditions committee to maintain our heritage and improve the appreciation of our staff and fellow members. The committee has begun a studied, careful effort to enumerate a conducive code of conduct which will guide and help the membership understand the club’s expectations.
We are extremely fortunate to have an exceptional staff at Scioto Country Club. They go above and beyond for the holiday season. The staff provides a warm, hospitable venue for the celebrations of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year. I would encourage you to thank them for their tireless efforts. Please come and enjoy the décor and the festivity of the season. I hope to see you all there. Happy Holidays!
Robert R. Bahnson PresidentThe Annual Meeting of the voting membership was held this past month. The approval of the additional three (3%) percent dues increase will be reflected on your December statements. The voting members also approved an addition to the Code of Regulations to have an Architect of Record for the golf course and approved some clarifications of existing statutes for Leave of Absence and members in the wait pool for Full Membership. The Code of Regulations is available to all members on the website.
December is a special month at the Club with the holiday and family activities. By the time of this newsletter, the Club should be decorated in holiday splendor. We just completed a memorable Gingerbread House decorating weekend with 400 houses and nearly 1,600 family members enjoying this holiday tradition to kick off the season (see Chef Tim’s stats). Thanksgiving dinner served to 330 at the Club, along with the 120 “Turkey to-go” orders is a remarkable achievement by Chef Tim Viton, Matt Livingston, and their staff. It is an incredible amount of food prepared by our culinary team to help make the holiday special for the membership. Visits with Santa, Santa Brunches, Candlelight Dinners with the Upper Arlington H.S. performers, the Member Holiday Party and the various member sponsored parties are part of the upcoming busy month.
As always, I want to thank the membership for their generous support of our staff with the annual Holiday Fund, which will be shared with nearly 200 staff members. I am amazed yearly how this membership supports the Evans Scholarship Fund, the Holiday and Emergency funds for staff and most recently the employee scholarship fund. It is incredibly important as it differentiates Scioto as an employer of choice. The staff also looks for ways to help those less fortunate as we adopt an elementary school and try to supply needed basic comforts for the children in need. If you would like to assist our effort, clothing and food bins are located at the receptionist area and in the fitness center.
As our leadership has changed, and new committees are formed, I would like to thank the member volunteers who give of their time and energy to assist our staff in operating and directing our Club. There are nearly 100 members involved on the various committees which provide valuable insight from constituencies in the membership which enables input to the Trustees and staff. The newly formed committees are listed on the website.
With all the festivities occurring this month, if you are hosting guests at the Club, please remind them of the dress codes and cell phone usage policies. Please double check your reservations made on ForeTees for the Holiday events such as visits with Santa or Candlelight Dinners. The Member Holiday Party is a wonderful event for our members and their adult family members or family guests. We hope you enjoy the splendor of the season and I hope the Club adds to your family’s holiday traditions.
On behalf or our leadership team, our staff members, and our families, we are thankful for being a part of this wonderful Club. We wish you all a safe and wonderful Holiday Season and the best wishes for a fabulous 2023.
On October 30, 2022, the Upper Arlington High School Men’s and Women’s Water Polo Teams captured the State Championship title for the second year in a row. Noteworthy to SCC are the number of SCC member kids on the team who came up through our SCC Swim Program.

Please join Midwest Regional Sales Manager, Joanne Schmidt as we enjoy a dinner paired with wines from iconic Napa Valley winery, Heitz Cellars. In the late 1950’s, Joe Heitz helped usher in California’s modern wine making era when he purchased an 8.5 acre vineyard just south of St. Helena from Leon Brendel and planted Grignolino. When Heitz Cellars was established in 1961, it was during a period when the population of Napa Valley had been reduced to the lowest number since prohibition at what is considered a turning point in Napa’s wine industry.

Players in stroke play event will now no longer be required to put their correct handicaps on scorecards for tournament play. This responsibility will fall on the tournament committee to make sure the correct handicaps for each player will be on the cards and the event will be scored correctly. Under the old rule, players were responsible for making sure that the handicap that was on the card is correct for the event.
Joe Falardeau, PGA Head Golf ProfessionalIf your club has been damaged during a round (except in cases of abuse) you may replace, repair, or continue to use it. Under the old rule, players that had a club become damaged or not usable would not be able to fix or replace the club until the end of the round. Now, players that have a damaged club (excluding cases of abuse) may replace or repair the club during a round.
When a players ball comes to rest after taking a drop and then rolls into another part of the course due to natural causes, there is no penalty, and you must replace it. Rickie Fowler was in the Waste Management Open at TPC Scottsdale and hit his ball into the penalty area on the 11th hole. He took a drop and his ball came to rest. While assessing his next shot, his ball rolled back into the water again. Under the old rule, Fowler was assessed another penalty shot resulting in him taking a triple bogey. With the rule change, Fowler would have been able to replace his dropped ball with no penalty shot.
When players hit their ball into a lateral penalty area, they have a couple of options. One of those options is to take the point of entry into the penalty area and the pin and the player can go back on that line as far as they want. The change to this rule allows the player move flexibility with the drop. This has been done to ensure greater consistency across all relief procedures, making it simpler for players to know where and how to drop a ball.
These Modified Rules cover the categories of disability and associated challenges that have been identified to date as appropriate for modifying the Rules of Golf to serve the purpose of enabling players with disabilities to play on a fair basis with all other players. As is the case with the Rules of Golf generally, these Modified Rules are regularly reviewed for possible revision on a periodic basis. If Committees or players believe that other authorized modifications should be considered, they should contact the USGA.
Many players have physical limitations that may result in some degree of disability and that may affect their ability to play the game. Examples include players who are partially sighted and players who have difficulty gripping a club because of severe arthritis. The above Modified Rules do not specifically apply to such players.

The 2022-2023 Ohio Selection Meeting will be held at Scioto Country Club. Candidates will be interviewed for the Evans Scholarship. Please mark your calendar – Members are encouraged to attend.
The Western Golf Association (WGA) established the WGA Caddie Academy in Chicago in 2012 to provide summer caddie opportunities to at-promise high school female students who ultimately hope to pursue a full tuition and housing Evans Scholarship. Through the Caddie Academy, students have the chance to earn money, meet role models and learn invaluable life lessons on the golf course. After successfully completing three summers, they become eligible to apply for the Evans Scholarship, a full tuition and housing college scholarship. To date, more than 100 graduates of the Caddie Academy have been awarded Evans Scholarships since the Program began in 2012.
Success of the WGA Caddie Academy in Chicago has led to growth and expansion with the launch of a Boys Caddie Academy in Chicago as well as chapters in Pennsylvania, Seattle and Minnesota. Through the generosity of a group of supporters, the WGA will be establishing a partnership in Columbus. We are thrilled to announce that Scioto Country Club will be hosting participants for the first WGA Ohio Caddie Academy in the summer of 2023.
The program at Scioto Country Club will run for seven weeks from mid-June through the first weekend in August. We expect to have four to six female participants from the state of Ohio who will caddie in 2023. In addition to caddying, participants will have access to special programming, mentoring, guest speakers, field trips and a book club, along with personal and professional development. Applicants will qualify for the Caddie Academy by demonstrating excellent academics, outstanding leadership and strong character. All applicants must reside in Ohio, be in their freshman year of high school and demonstrate significant financial need and lack easy access to a nearby caddie program.

Throughout November we held our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive to benefit the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. For the past two years we have set a goal to collect more food than Craig Meyers’s best squat, which is 804.5 lbs. In each of those past two years we have exceeded that goal; however, this year we went well beyond our goal and set a record of 1,053 lbs. collected! We take great pride in our ability to provide food for our communities and for those in need, and we would like to thank all the members and employees who donated food and money to this year’s drive. We would not have been able to collect 1,053 lbs. without you!
Our Junior Golf Fitness program has started off strong, with each session filled to maximum capacity. Both David Gattshall and Chris Yoder have done a phenomenal job in preparing for and putting together the Junior Golf Fitness program, and their work is being shown through the progress that the Juniors have already made through the first four weeks of their program. The infamous Black Friday Beatdown challenge featured much participation, with several members working off their Thanksgiving stuffing and competing for the best score!
For December, we will be hosting our annual Giving Tree, which will be benefiting Camp Christmas in Marysville. Camp Christmas is an event where the Marysville community comes together for a fun night of food and music, in addition to giving parents the opportunity to “shop” for presents to gift their kids for Christmas. Our goal is to provide these gifts for the “shop” so that families in need can pick their own presents free of charge and have gifts for their kids to open on Christmas day.
We will also be introducing a new Group Exercise class to the schedule: “Strong Core & Pelvic Floor with Kirsten,” on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:00am! This class is specially designed for women to help rebuild and strengthen the core and the muscles of the pelvic floor and is great for women following pregnancy and for those experiencing long-term issues due to injury or age. We will also continue to feature new healthy snack and smoothie items in the Fitness lobby, with several snacks being freshly baked and provided by Posty’s Pastries.
Happy Holidays and we look forward to serving you at the Fitness Center!
