With November comes the Scioto Country Club Annual Meeting for all voting members, and guests extended an invitation from the President on November 11, 2024. Article I, Section 1 of Scioto Country Club’s Code of Regulations states that “An annual meeting of voting members for the election of Trustees, and for the transaction of all other business which may properly come before the meeting, shall be held at the Clubhouse of Scioto Country Club on the 2nd Monday in November of each year.”
Items covered at the Annual Meeting include approving the minutes from the prior year’s annual meeting, a review and discussion of the Club’s financial statements and financial health, a vote on the election of new Trustees, and a vote on any additional items requiring membership approval. Additionally, we will welcome new Full Members with a Scioto Jacket ceremony, recognize Life Members present at the meeting, provide updates on the Evans Scholarship Program and the Scioto Scholarship Fund, conduct any new business, and address questions from our membership before announcing next year’s incoming President.
One very important gesture of each Annual Meeting, however, is when we pause to honor and recognize the members we have lost during the year. The loss of a loved one, family member, friend, or acquaintance is one of the most difficult experiences I have ever endured. Recognizing the importance of this at the Annual Meeting serves as a way to remember and respect the lives of those members we have lost and the impact they had on those around them. It reminds us of the importance of community, reflection, and gratitude for those who came before us and helped create the exceptional Club that is Scioto. Their contributions and the friendships forged will always be cherished, and it is a wonderful way take the time to recognize those who had a hand in shaping Scioto and our lives.
As we move into the season of giving, let us also remember that being part of Scioto Country Club is about more than just our facilities - it’s about the connections we foster and the community we build. Scioto’s membership participation in giving back to our community is one of the aspects that makes the Club unique. I encourage all members to consider donating to one of the various philanthropic opportunities available, including the Scioto Scholarship Fund, Evans Scholars Program, and the annual Employee Holiday Fund. Our membership makes a positive impact in our community through these giving alternatives, both giving back and helping pay it forward.
Lastly, this year has brought significant changes to our Club, including the appointment of our new General Manager and Chief Operating Officer, Joe Furko, who stepped in to lead the Club forward after the retirement of Greg Wolf. While change can be challenging, it also presents opportunities for growth and improvement. Based on feedback from membership surveys, Joe and his team have worked to implement changes to enhance our food and dining experience. Support for the new menus has been overwhelmingly
A N O T E F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N T
positive. Additionally, the planned capital improvements to our kitchen operations scheduled for Spring 2025 are expected to only further enhance the member experience. Upgrades to our existing equipment, workflow improvements, and the continued focus on consistency under the direction of Chef Vinnie are expected to continue to drive even more improvement. I understand that transitioning to “new” anything takes time, and appreciate your patience and support as we adapt to these improvements. Together, the Board of Trustee’s and staff are committed to enhancing the Scioto experience for everyone.
It has been an honor to serve as President this past year, and I thank our membership for this privilege. We will continue to build on our past successes as we move forward together.

The fall weather we've been enjoying has been nothing short of spectacular, has it not? I can only hope I haven't jinxed us by mentioning it. On a more definite note, I'm thrilled to report that both bubbles are now up and functioning beautifully. A huge thank you goes out to Bob Becker and his tireless team for spearheading the effort to get the bubbles inflated and ready for the season.
As the fall season brings its usual changes, we're saying goodbye to Josh Miller, our Director of Aquatics. While we're sad to see Josh go, we're also excited for him as he takes on the role of Director of Aquatics with Upper Arlington pools. We wish
Josh and his family all the best in this new adventure. Josh's departure has us evaluating the future management of the aquatics department, so stay tuned for updates on that front.
With the end of daylight-saving time upon us, I want to take a moment to remind everyone to exercise extra caution in the parking lots and driveways. As the mornings and evenings grow darker, our staff and members are walking through these areas, so please slow down to ensure everyone's safety. Your vigilance is greatly appreciated.
Even though it might seem early, the holiday season is fast approaching! If you're still looking for the perfect venue to host your events, Diana in our catering department is ready to help. We have plenty of prime dates still available, and the Club will be decorated beautifully to get you in the holiday spirit. And don't forget, as dietary restrictions become more prevalent, we're here to accommodate your needs. If you have special requests for food or beverage, please don't hesitate to reach out to our staff. The more advance notice we have, the better we can meet your requirements.
November is always an important month for the Club as we hold our annual meeting. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Micheal Martz and Past President Dr. Bob Bahnson for their dedicated service to the Board. We're grateful for their support and know we can still count on them to lend their expertise to future projects. Their contributions will not be forgotten.
As and look forward to the holiday season together.

John Kampmeier
A Cheerful Smile Always Willing to Help!
If you’re an avid golfer, then you’ve definitely met John Kampmeier. Since joining us in April 2023, John has made a significant impact in the bag room, locker room, and as a starter. His positive attitude and dedication to our members truly embody the spirit of Scioto.
Born and raised just half a mile south of the Club, John’s roots in the community run deep. He has been a passionate golfer for 40 years, and his connection to Scioto extends back to his father, who was a social member in the 70s and early 80s. For John, working at Scioto is more than just a job; it’s a chance to engage with the membership and share his love for the game of golf.
Despite having undergone five back surgeries, John prefers the outdoors, but sometimes finds that his indoor responsibilities suit him better physically. His extensive experience—30 years in bartending and restaurant management—makes him a versatile team member who is always ready to lend a hand wherever needed. “Wherever you need help, I’m willing to do anything. I’d love to learn more about the Club, I think it would make me that much better at my job!“
When he’s not at the Club, John enjoys yoga, golfing, and hiking. An adventurous spirit, he backpacked through Central America for five months, and he shares a crazy story about a near-death experience in Nicaragua.
Looking forward, John is particularly excited about the upcoming US Senior Open and the new Learning Center that’s set to enhance our facilities. He is eager to dive into projects during the off-season, as he thrives on staying active and engaged.
Blake Cheatham, Locker Room Manager, nominated John this month, praising him as someone who “personifies Scioto culture.” Blake noted, “He is always in a good mood and genuinely enjoys talking to members and guests. His work ethic and friendly personality make him a great teammate and a pleasure to work with. John simply makes Scioto a better Club.”

This is my 26th year at Scioto and as another golf season draws near to a conclusion I want to recognize and thank my teammates in the Grounds Department for their hard work and innumerable contributions this year.
At its peak, the Grounds Department included 33 team members. That number has been reduced to 20 though due to the resumption of school and the departure of our interns. I am proud of the fact the grounds team includes members who have been with us from 1 to more than 28 years, including Chris Iles, Equipment Technician (28 years), Jed Billet, Horticultulist (16 Years) Brian Obermiyer, Operator (21 Years), Matt Margolis, Operator (12 Years), Chris Gates, Operator (8 Years), Tristan Myers, Superintendent (6 Years) and John Labardee, Operator(4 years). Their experience and dedication is invaluable. We were fortunate to enjoy the assistance of four interns during the summer; namely, Jake Rose (Wakefield, England), Jake Miller (Wooster, Ohio), Alex Russell (Akron, Ohio), Euan Porter (Edinburgh, Scotland). Every team member demonstrated impressive commitment and contributed to the quality of the conditions on and around the golf course.
It takes a special person with a strong character to succeed on this team. The expectations are high every day and start at 6:00 am. Believe it or not, the entire team consumes less than one pot of coffee during our meeting in which we review the day’s priorities and assignments. Each day is carefully scripted and always full. Some of our responsibilities are rather routine but still important and require careful attention to detail and a heck of a lot of patience. For instance, six team members spend approximately 150 hours each week hand-mowing greens. Each of them walks approximately 12.5 miles each day during this process. We also dedicate approximately 120 hours each week to raking the 77 bunkers on the course, which total 3 acres of bunker sand.
Every day we depend on one another, Mother Nature, as well as the respect of Scioto’s neighbors and all the players on course while we are working to execute our responsibilities timely and at the highest quality. We are grateful for the Thursday Maintenance Gap (10:30 am-12 pm) because it gives us an important opportunity to catch up on any work disruption beyond our control and or attend to unanticipated or special conditions that might arise.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve Scioto and I encourage you to join me in recognizing my teammates for all that they do to make Scioto special.
- Bob Becker, Director of Grounds

Dear Member,
As we enter the month of November, a time traditionally set aside for reflection and gratitude, I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks to each of you for making this past golf season another memorable one at Scioto Country Club. Your commitment to the Club, respect for the course, and camaraderie have all contributed to creating an exceptional experience for our membership. I would especially like to acknowledge the effort each of you has made in caring for the golf course, ensuring that it remains in pristine condition for the enjoyment of your fellow members. It is this shared sense of responsibility and pride in our club that makes Scioto truly special.
Additionally, your ongoing support of the Golf Shop has been instrumental in helping us provide a diverse range of high-quality apparel, equipment, and services. We are deeply appreciative of your patronage, and we remain committed to enhancing your shopping experience throughout the year.
As a friendly reminder, Scioto members receive a 20% discount on all apparel purchases year-round. With the holiday season quickly approaching, we hope you’ll find unique gift ideas with us. Mark your calendars for our Golf Shop Holiday Party on the evening of Friday, December 6th. In addition to the discount, you already enjoy, there will be exclusive holiday specials available that evening. If you need help curating the perfect gift, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Maureen Morrow, our Merchandise Coordinator, or me. We’d love the opportunity to enhance your holiday shopping experience.
As the days grow shorter and the weather changes, the Golf House Learning Center will become more active. You can reserve time at the Learning Center or in the simulator bays at the Family Center through the ForeTees app. Please honor your reservation as demand for these facilities will be high during the offseason. This is a great time to continue honing your golf skills, and our professional team is available yearround for lessons. Their availability can also be found on ForeTees.
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the Golf Shop at (614) 486-1039.
Sincerely,
Joe Falardeau, PGA Director of Golf

Scioto’s Core Ideology
According to James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras in their Harvard Business Review article, “Building Your Company’s Vision”, core ideology ”. . . defines the enduring character of an organization . . .” and holds the organization together over time. Such ideology should not be confused with strategies, which may change frequently. Core ideology holds meaning for those inside the organization, provides inspiration and attracts those with similar values and outlook. Scioto Country Club’s core ideology – it’s purpose, values and vision –is featured in every issue of The Arrowhead.
Any organization’s core values indicate what the members hold dear. Scioto’s core values are:
Mutual Respect for All
Tradition and Rich Golf Heritage
Fiscal Responsibility
The club welcomes anyone who shares those values.
Similar to core values is an organization’s core purpose. Such purpose defines an organization’s very existence. Our Club’s core purpose is:
To Enrich the Lives of its Members
The Board of Trustees, committee volunteers and staff all strive daily to fulfil this purpose.
An organization’s vision, which is to say the future it strives to create, should provide a description of a huge, long-term goal. To be effective as a guiding principle, the goal should seem almost unattainable. Scioto’s vision is:
Scioto is Committed to being the Premier Country Club in the Nation
Our Club does not wish to merely be one of the premier country clubs in the nation. It, in fact, already holds that status. We strive to be the best. Our members expect and deserve no less.

State High School Tournament
October was a big month for junior golf at Scioto. With the high school golf season coming to a close and the state tournament in sight two of Scioto’s varsity players stepped up in a big way. Mitchell Corbin and Mikey Pagnotto finished their sophomore and junior years very solidly. Mitchell came through with a 76 at Apple Valley during the district tournament, helping Olentangy Liberty reach the State Championship at NCR Country Club. He followed up that performance at states with an opening round 74 helping lift his team to a runner up finish. Additionally, Mikey Pagnotto battled through and had one of the low rounds at districts with a 74 and found himself in a 2 for 7 playoff to advance to NCR. He played very well with some clutch up and downs to keep himself in contention but came up just short on the third playoff hole.

Congratulations to Coach Yoder on being inducted into the Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame.

Golfweek Darby Creek
Following the high school season Mikey Pagnotto and Mitchell Corbin got right back to work and caught fire in the Golfweek Junior Tour event at Darby Creek this past weekend. Mikey won the event for both the 14-15 boys and the overall 14-19 boys age division firing rounds of 72, 66. Mikey’s final round was the lowest of the tournament and a new career low. This regional tournament had a very strong field with some of the best players in and around the state of Ohio. Mitchell was not far behind with scores of 69,74. Good enough for a second place finish in the 14-15 boys and a tie for fourth in the 14-19 boys age division. Also playing in the Golfweek Darby Creek, Will Mangas had a very nice tournament with rounds of 73, 74 finishing tied for seventh in the 16-19 age division.
Junior Ohio Cup
In the second annual Ohio Junior Cup, Coach Yoder had the honor to serve as the vice-captain for the Southern Ohio team. Northern Ohio defeated Southern Ohio in exciting play at historic Columbus Country Club. Coach Yoder will serve as head captain next year on the Southern Ohio team.

Courtside Conversations
Last month, we discussed how the Indoor Court Season offers a change in court surface, and so a change in playing tactics. This month, I’d like to expand a bit on other opportunities the Indoor Racquets Season can offer us. As the weather gets colder, making it to the gym or pursuing exercise can sometimes feel..daunting, especially when houses can be so cozy. Racquet Sports, by their nature, are social, and often lifetime, sports.
Being a part of a Club, a team, or regular playing reservation or clinic time gives players an opportunity to be motivated in fitness while staying social. A 2018 Danish research study published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings showed that people who play tennis lived an average of 9.7 years longer than those who didn’t play social sports! The study followed over 8,500 people for 25 years. Playing badminton may extend life span by 6.2 years, swimming by 3.4 years, and jogging by 3.2 years. If there was a type of food that could lengthen my life by almost 10 years, I’d be eating it every day! So grab a friend, teammate, or family member and come out to the courts to play this Season.
Happy Playing!
Kyra Wagner Director of Racquet Operations

October has been an enjoyable month, both with the beautiful weather and fall activities surrounding the Club. The Family Center has been no exception. On Sunday, October 13th, we hosted the last Sundaes and Slime event. Kids in attendance enjoyed creating a Halloween-themed container of slime to take home and the Fall-themed sundae bar satisfied our sweet tooths that day.
The Kids Club Boo Bash celebration took place on Friday, October 18th. We could not have asked for better weather as the kids trick-or-treated their way around the Club and snagged a whole bag full of treats. They made their way back to the family center to enjoy a buffet dinner, two seasonal crafts, and a ghostly- inspired Rice Krispie treat as dessert. All their costumes were super cute and creative. We had lots of good laughs and smiles were abundant as we rang in the Halloween season.
Mark your calendar for Friday, November 15th for our monthly Kids Club “Pawsativity”. This is going to be a great event. We will be celebrating our beloved pets – dogs, cats, hamsters, bunnies, fish etc. Kids will learn about the various shelters in our area that help find dogs and cats their furrever home. We will be making dog toys and cat toys to donate to local shelters and to take home and give as gifts. For anyone who loves their pets and wants to celebrate all the joy they bring to our lives – you won’t want to miss this Kidz Club event. Look for registration to open on Foretees two weeks prior to the event.

Golf Fitness
One of the biggest questions I get during the winter months from golfers is “what exercises can I do to improve my golf game”? Seems like a simple question, but from my point of view it has many layers Without doing any sort of physical evaluation I can give you some basic guidelines
Spend the majority of your gym time getting stronger, faster and more mobile/flexible Getting stronger is what I would recommend you focus on Strength training will improve your balance and coordination, improve your joint health, improve your posture and build the engine required to improve your speed. Focus on compound (multi-joint) movements that will best utilize your time in the gym. There is nothing wrong with spending some time doing cardio but if you are already able to walk 18 holes comfortably, I wouldn’t worry about that to much. After you have a solid foundation of strength you can begin mixing in power/speed work. Examples of that are, sprints on the treadmill, medicine ball slams and box jumps.
Don’t get caught up into thinking you need to do “golf specific” exercises to improve. Ideally spend your time in the gym improving your body and improve your swing by getting golf lessons with our golf staff.
We have everything you need at the Fitness Center to improve this winter Hope to see you soon!
David Gattshall, Director of Golf Fitness

Turkey Spring Rolls
Ingredients:
2 cups Shredded Leftover Thanksgiving Turkey
3 Tablespoons Soy Sauce
1 Teaspoon Sesame Oil
1 Teaspoon Rice Vinegar
1/2 Teaspoon Hot Chili Oil
1 Package Cellophane Noodles
(8) 8 1/2-inch Rice Paper Wrappers
3 Leaves Green-Leaf Lettuce, Torn Into Pieces
1/2 Cup Alfalfa Sprouts
1 Carrot, Cut Into Julienne
1 Cucumber, Cut Into Julienne
3 Tablespoons Finely Chopped Fresh Cilantro
Dipping Sauce:
1 Cup Leftover Cranberry Sauce
2 Tablespoons Soy Sauce Hot Chile Oil
Instructions:
Place the turkey in a bowl and drizzle in the soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar and the hot chili oil. Stir to combine and give it a taste. If you'd like a stronger flavor, add a little more of any of the ingredients.
Next, place the cellophane noodles in a large bowl. Cover them with boiling water and let them sit according to the package directions. When they are tender but still have a nice bite, drain and set the noodles aside. Soften the rice paper wrappers by placing them one by one into a bowl of warm water and taking them out when they're soft but still hold together.
To assemble each spring roll, lay a wrapper on a plate. Lay a small line of noodles in the center. Add a small amount of lettuce, turkey, alfalfa sprouts, a few carrot and cucumber strips, and top with a sprinkling of cilantro.
Fold in the sides of the wrappers and roll it into a tight roll Repeat to make the rest of the rolls
For the dipping sauce: Combine the cranberry sauce, soy sauce and a few dashed chile oil
