Happy New Year!
As we enter 2025, many of us are setting resolutions and goals for the year ahead. This tradition of reflecting and planning has guided our approach to Scioto Country Club’s future, and we’re focused on continuing to build upon our legacy.
January Board of Trustees Retreat
This month, our Board of Trustees will hold its annual retreat to focus on Scioto’s strategic direction. We will assess our current strengths, identify areas for improvement, and ensure we meet the evolving needs of our members. Key priorities include enhancing the membership experience across aquatics, dining, fitness, golf, and racquet sports, with special attention to preparations for the 2026 U.S. Senior Open.
Membership & Financial Strength
Scioto remains in a strong position with a robust waitlist for new members. Current wait times for Social membership is about three years, reflecting the value our community places on Scioto’s facilities and experiences. Our financial health also allows us to invest in projects that will benefit members for years to come.
Golf Learning Center Update
Construction of the new Golf Learning Center at North Campus is progressing on schedule and within budget. Thanks to Bob Becker and his team, early work has reduced costs, and the facility will provide state-of-the-art resources for player development at all skill levels.
Scioto Committees for 2025
Scioto’s committees for 2025 are now in place, each playing a vital role in the Club’s continued success. A new committee focused on security, both for our facilities and networks, will be a key addition this year. Committee members contribute valuable time and expertise, and we welcome feedback from the membership on plans for the future.
2025 Committee Chairs:
Aquatics: Molly Penrod
Finance: Rick Schumacher
Fitness: Brent Wrightsel
Golf: Mike Shonk
Green: Scott Miller
Historian: Scott Miller
House: Mark Mizer
Long Range Planning: Peggy Bellows
Membership: Jim Bechtel
Racquets: Brian Basil
Technology + Security: Joe Chenelle
Tournament: David Royer
Traditions: John Landolfi
Please join me in thanking our Committee Chairs and the over 80 members who volunteer their time to enhance Scioto. As we look ahead to 2025, we’re committed to maintaining Scioto’s excellence. From strategic planning at the Board Retreat to ongoing facility development, our goal is to ensure Scioto remains a place our members are proud of for years to come. Together, we will build on our successes as we move forward.
Dan Lhota
C L U B N E W S
As we step into 2025, it’s hard to believe how quickly time has passed. The memories of my first day here still feel remarkably fresh, and I trust you all enjoyed a peaceful and joyous holiday season with your loved ones. As we embrace this new year, I’m filled with optimism about the exciting developments ahead for our club community.
I’m thrilled to announce a significant addition to our team: Dan Morneau will be joining Scioto Country Club as our new Director of Racquets. Dan brings an impressive depth of expertise across all racquet sports, and his credentials speak volumes about his commitment to excellence. As one of the region’s pioneering certified pickleball instructors, he’s demonstrated remarkable foresight in embracing emerging sports trends. His exceptional skills extend beyond pickleball to platform tennis, where he’s established himself as a formidable player and instructor.
Dan’s journey at Elysium Tennis showcases his leadership capabilities and professional growth. Beginning as the head professional overseeing all Junior Programs, he advanced to become their Director of Racquets in 2018, where he’s since made substantial impacts on their programming. Our selection process was rigorous and comprehensive, involving the review of more than 35 resumes, six phone interviews, and five in-person meetings. I’d like to extend special thanks to Brian Basil and Leah Wagenbrenner for their invaluable assistance throughout this careful selection process. While Dan’s official tenure begins February 1st, 2025, you’ll likely spot him around the Club throughout January as he familiarizes himself with our facilities and community.
The North campus project continues to progress steadily, though we’re currently in a brief transitional phase. We’re awaiting the delivery of precast flooring forms, scheduled to arrive on January 10th, 2025. Once these crucial components are in place, we’ll proceed with applying the cement topcoat, followed by the commencement of building framing. I’m pleased to report that we remain on schedule, and in the coming months, you’ll witness the structure truly taking shape as we move through these vital construction phases.
C L U B N E W S
Our staff has been diligently analyzing the recent member survey results, and we’re already implementing changes based on your valuable feedback. Following last month’s discussion about Food & Beverage adjustments, which led to several menu modifications, we’ve identified key areas for improvement across other facilities. The pool area emerged as a priority, with members emphasizing the need for enhanced restroom cleanliness and expanded seating options – both issues we’d highlighted in our fall wrap-up meeting and are actively addressing.
In our racquets program, members expressed interest in elevated instruction quality and increased social engagement opportunities, which aligns perfectly with Dan’s upcoming arrival. Regarding golf operations, tee time accessibility emerged as a significant concern. In response, the Board has established a dedicated task force to develop comprehensive solutions for improving this aspect of our service. We’re committed to finding innovative ways to enhance member access while maintaining the exceptional quality of play our course is known for.
These developments represent just the beginning of what promises to be an transformative year for Scioto Country Club. We remain dedicated to elevating your club experience through thoughtful improvements and member-focused initiatives.

We are proud to announce Matt Nelson as our Employee of the Month! Matt has been a valuable member of the Scioto team for just over 2.5 years and has recently been promoted to Banquet Chef. Matt’s journey at Scioto has been marked by his commitment to personal and professional growth. His favorite part of working here is the evolving culture and the opportunity to continuously better himself. This mindset has helped him excel in his new role as Banquet Chef, and his contributions have made a significant impact on the team.
Originally from Grandview Heights, Matt now lives in West Jefferson with his wife and kids. When Matt isn’t working, you’ll find him spending quality time with his wife and kids, cooking for friends and family, playing a round of golf, working out, or taking on home improvement projects.
One fact that many might not know about Matt is that he is a childhood non-Hodgkin's lymphoma survivor, having battled the disease between the ages of 14 and 16. He has been in remission for years and as part of his journey, Matt has expressed an interest in getting more involved with the childhood cancer association, which is a cause close to his heart.
Matt's hard work and dedication haven't gone unnoticed. He was nominated by Executive Chef Vinnie Gillard, who shared, "Matt is an extremely hard worker and has really stepped up in the last 8 months or so. No task is too tall, and no job is too big." This recognition is a testament to Matt's contributions and the positive impact he has made at Scioto. Please join us in congratulating Matt on this well-deserved recognition!

Junior Golf Fitness
Throughout the winter Coach Yoder and Coach Jared workout alongside the juniors to help set the culture and expectation while also engaging in the burn of a hard days workout. This allows for better communication on what the kids need to be working on physically to improve their swing as well as having eyes on them as they work through technique and explosiveness.
Being in shape and having the ability to hit the ball a long way is a massive advantage in our game and over the past three years the Scioto Junior Golf Team has partnered with TPI certified trainer David Gattshall to work on strength, flexibility, and clubhead speed during the offseason. These workouts are designed with these four principles in mind:
Building an overall athlete
Helping players with their swing
Creating lifelong health habits
Building mental toughness
A typical workout starts with a warmup including jogs, skips, and backpedals, followed by mobility exercises like leg swings and hip huggers. The primary workout includes stations for strength, power, and mobility, focusing on multi-joint exercises like squats, ball slams, and pushups. Juniors will also use SuperSpeed golf clubs for clubhead speed development. To enhance mental focus and competitive drive, there may be group challenges such as most pushups or longest jump. This competitive environment helps push juniors to the next level.

Courtside Conversations
Last month we discussed the social aspect of tennis in relation to competition and dealing with the mental balance the sport requires when moving from clinics to matches. This week, we’ll talk about the importance of establishing short-term and longterm goals. As we move into the New Year of 2025, many players will be making fitness, life, and other such goals. In Racquet Sports, this can be a healthy ongoing habit as well.
We can use 2025 as a positive jumping-off point! Short-term goals can be things like: “I want to bend my knees more when I hit groundstrokes”, or “I want to reset back to ‘ready position’ faster.” Long-term goals are things like, “I want to change the structure of my serve so I use my legs more to gain power”. “I want to be able to rate up by next year”. Members who play in matches through the winter seasons can also get into the positive habit of making goals After each match. When you come off the court, try to think of one thing you did well, and one thing you’d like to improve upon for next time. If you keep it to one goal each, you’re less likely to get overwhelmed and more likely to make improvements! Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to all of our wonderful Members!
Happy Playing!

Happenings in Fitness
Happy New Year to all! Many of us look at the beginning of a new year as an opportunity to start fresh. This can be a very daunting task if the plan is to completely change all exercise and bad eating habits. Set small goals that are achievable. Start by incorporating a day or two in the gym. Once you’re comfortable, try to make it three to four times per week. If that does not fit your schedule, that is ok!
Focus more on the kitchen. Begin with eliminating sugary drinks (soda, Gatorade etc.), as liquids are absorbed into the blood stream faster than solid foods. Once you have conquered beverages, eliminate sweet foods all together.
In the grand scheme of your health and wellness journey, one bad meal will not ruin a diet plan, just like one good meal does not make a good diet plan. Consistency is the key! To keep things basic, eat meat, vegetables, nuts, seeds, some fruit, little starch, and no sugar. When in the gym, train major lifts, master gymnastics basics, and make sure to workout hard and fast. Bike, run, swim, row, ski several times per week. Keep workouts short and intense. Vary your workouts by avoiding routine. Mix and match elements of your workout in as many combinations and patterns as possible.
This month’s fitness challenge will help you Step Into the New Year! For 25 minutes straight, we will see how many rounds of: 25 calories on the Concept 2 bike, 25 walking dumbbell lunges, and 25 burpees you can complete! Ladies will use 17.5lb dumbbells in each hand, while the men will use 30lbs each hand for the lunges. Start slow, this will feel like a very long time. When you get to the burpees, move at a sustainable pace. Do not burn out on the first round!
