EDITORS LETTER STOCKISTS

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW Someone once told me that you should always write about what you know and this is what I know… Having previously worked on the old SANDTON magazine, my team and I decided it was time to revive the much loved brand. And like most things in life, change is as good as a holiday, or at least that’s what we’re made to believe. As someone who is personally going through a bit of change herself, the best bit of advice I can give, is that we should never be afraid of change – we may lose something good but we may ultimately gain something better. After all, sometimes the hardest decisions in life are usually the right ones. And so my friends, we bring you the new and improved Sandton Magazine, a bimonthly lifestyle magazine that covers all things hot and happening in the city, or at least we try our best to! Our first issue is all about spring (and rightly so) since it’s a fresh season, a fresh start and a fresh look. Read up on all the new events taking place in Joburg, the new brands that have just launched, and which restaurants we recommend you visit. We also feature the latest fashion and beauty trends and chat to a few local celebrities about their love for the city. All in all, we hope you enjoy our first issue (we certainly enjoyed preparing it) because we have lots more in store and lots more to give.

Tell us a bit about your relationship with Joburg? I love the hustle and bustle of Joburg. There’s always an energy in Joburg that is so infectious. I think what makes Joburg so special is the people, which I see predominantly when I play at Emirates Airline Park. As a city, we always stand together.

What inspired you to dedicate your career or build your career in a city like Joburg? I am contracted to the Lions Rugby Union, so my career sees me based in Joburg. I have been here for many years and it’s where I call home.

What is it about your passion and love for Joburg that you want other people to see? Joburg isn’t just about the city, it’s about taking a step further and discovering new and exciting places just outside of the city. Joburg is a very special place to live and raise a family!

How do you describe the city when you meet foreigners?

I LOVE YOU JOBURG WITH

LIONEL MAPOE The Emirates Lions rugby player discusses his love for the city…

PAGE 6

Alive! There’s an amazing energy when it comes to the people, the places, the food, the sights, everything! During the Currie Cup season, I am contracted to the Japanese Rugby League, which means I relocate for a few months a year, and when I come back to Joburg that energy is reignited within me.

Every relationship has its ups and downs. What are yours with Joburg? The only thing missing in Joburg is my six-year-old son, Zaiden, who lives out of Joburg with his mom. I miss him every day and wish he could experience Joburg the way I do. That, and traffic. I cannot stand traffic!!!

As a professional rugby player that is constantly in the spotlight, how do you remain true to yourself? I rely on my support system. I surround myself with amazing people who keep me grounded and humble. Fame is short-lived and I am always reminded to treat those around me with care and kindness.

Where do you see your relationship going with Joburg? For now, I say goodbye to Joburg for a while as I head to Japan, but I will be back before the city starts to miss me, haha.

GIN AND TONIC ANYONE? There is no denying that gin is one of the world’s fastest growing spirits. We sat down with premium spirits company, Truman & Orange’s Director, Rowan Leibbrandt to discuss everyone’s love for the drink.

PAGE 22

DRINKS* There is somewhat of a gin ‘revolution’ happening now. How so?

lemons, some from the Amalfi Coast and some from Sicily, which gives Malfy it’s signature fresh, zesty-sweet character. Malfy also makes use of Italian juniper and five other botanicals, like coriander, angelica and cassia bark, which create the body of Malfy’s refreshing flavour.

Gin is a versatile drink to mix, there are many options available to choose from, beautiful and interesting packaging, and it’s delicious. It’s also now more of a female spirits drink than ever before. Some say the revolution was fuelled by the whisky boom that happened a few years ago, with lots of boutique whisky distilleries popping up in the UK and US in particular. While the owners waited for their whisky to mature (a minimum of three years) they began to start experimenting with gin, which is quicker to make as it doesn’t require as long an ageing process.

What other delicious ways are there to use Malfy Gin?

Handcrafted. Authentic. Unique. Words that are becoming increasingly important for consumers. Why do you think this is?

How do you think the local gin market (and gin drinker) has changed in SA?

Consumers are more connected than ever before, well informed and demand higher quality products. Handcrafted and attention to detail are of the utmost importance and brands need to have an authentic and unique story to tell about their products.

For those people who don’t know about it, tell us briefly about Truman & Orange Truman & Orange is a national premium drinks company with our head office based in Cape Town. Our portfolio of international brands include Beluga Russian Vodka, Malfy Gin, Godet Cognac, Fortaleza Tequila, Don Papa Aged Rum, Spytail Black Ginger Rum, Innis & Gunn Beers and others.

The G&T – something that epitomises South African summer. How has the humble G&T transitioned with the arrival of Malfy Gin? There are interesting new tonics, simple natural additives, seasonings and increasingly experimental bartenders that are all contributing to loads of variety in how G&T’s are made. Malfy is a lemon driven gin and it’s citrus-sweet character is perfect for G&T’s of all shapes and sizes.

What can people expect flavour-wise from the varietals under Malfy Gin? Uniquely, Malfy uses coastal grown Italian

PAGE 23

Negronis and Martinis! We mustn’t lose these fantastic traditional ways of drinking gin. So many modern gin drinks are sweet, but these classic cocktails are much more savoury and allow the gin flavour to dominate. This works especially well for a big-charcter gin like Malfy.

Gin has gone from my gran’s drink to my girlfriend’s drink in the last decade. I can’t think of any other spirit that has made such an about-turn in such a short space of time. It’s incredible. For a long time young woman had fallen out of love with spirits. Cocktails were too sugary and neat spirits, like the whiskies and cognacs their partners were drinking, were too strong for them. So they migrated en masse into wine and bubbly. But now they’re back!

Cocktail Recipes: The Malfy Martoni 60ml dry Campari 120ml Malfy Gin Cocktail glass Fill a metal shaker with cracked ice. Pour in the Campari, stir briefly, and strain out (optional). Add the Malfy Gin. Stir briskly for about 10 seconds, strain into chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a slice of lemon. Malfy Spritz 60ml Malfy Gin 15ml lemon juice 2 dashes Angostura bitters Prosecco Shake gin, juice and bitters with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass. Top with chilled Prosecco.

THE RISE OF RYAN KEYS The fashion designer has gone from strength to strength building his empire and now has plans to launch a capsule collection with actress Enhle Mbali as well as a new men’s collection.

Ryan Keys always knew he would be a designer from a young age. Growing up in Bryanston, Johannesburg, it was his love of photography that catapulted him into the fashion world, he even interned for a few fashion houses at the tender age of 14-years-old.

plans to launch his first ever men’s collection, giving men the opportunity to experience what women experience each time they put on a Ryan Keys garment. In fact, he showcased a sneak preview of the collection at fashion week recently and explains the timing felt right.

He went on to further his fashion studies at the Spero Villioti Elite Design Academy, qualifying top of his class, and went on to attend the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New York City.

“I just find there is such a need for decent quality, locally produced men’s underwear, swimwear, gym wear and loungewear and I want to capture the essence of mens clothing that can be worn from the gym to dinner. My style of menswear is ultra sports luxe,” says Ryan.

Fast forward to today, Ryan Keys has established a successful name for himself within the industry. Having opened his first haute couture store, Keys Fashion in Parkhurst in May 2014, Ryan has secured another prime position with his now based store in Hyde Park Corner Shopping Centre.

Ryan also has a few collaborations in the pipeline, most specifically his capsule collection with businesswoman, media personality, actress and wife of Black Coffee, Enhle Mbali, saying she is exactly the type of woman he always wanted to work with.

His gorgeous dresses are the envy of many. So much so, they’ve been worn by politicians and famous A-list celebrities like Bonang Matheba, Minnie Dlamini and Khanyi Mbau. And who can blame them for choosing Ryan as their preferred stylist? When it comes to haute couture, Ryan’s passion is fueled by his desire to design exquisite, stylish and detailed garments. He sources the best materials and embroideries from all over the world in his quest to create masterpieces that are unique as well as timeless.

“I met her just before her wedding through my publicist and she is an absolute dream. There aren’t many celebrities I can say are willing to bend over backwards for someone. She has her own businesses and she’s an inspiration to everyone,” says Ryan before adding, “Not many people know Enhle is a designer by trade. She has the vision, she’s sexy, she’s cute, she inspires me to work harder and I wanted to push the boundaries with her because of what an incredible woman she is.”

“The Ryan Keys customer is a lady who knows who she is and is not afraid to stand out,” explains Ryan, adding, “She wants a beautiful garment made by exquisite fabrics and wants something tailored perfectly to her body.”

So, what’s next on the agenda for Ryan? Apart from keeping himself busy, he still has dreams to open up a few more couture stores across South Africa and expand his brand abroad. But for now, Ryan continues to strive to be the number one fashion designer in the country, and build longstanding relationships with his customers.

But it’s not just women who Ryan will be dressing as he

SPRING/SUMMER 2017 HAIR TIPS: Senior Stylist Eloise Anne Adam Theys from Urban Sass in Sandton shares the latest hair tips for the new season.

rock the new colour techniques you have to use professional hair care products…

The Colour Trend:

Kerastase Aura Botanica is an amazing new range and is gentle and sulphate free. Before washing your hair, indulge in a short, 15-minute treatment using their sweet orange fragranced oil blend for a much needed boost of nourishment to your hair.

Sombre, balayage and baby lights are the latest colour techniques that are on point this year. Say goodbye to old fashioned highlights and opt for a more subtle, natural look. This can be achieved by adding darker tones to the base and golden warm tones to the ends.

Elixir Ultime Original Oil collection is amazing for nourishment and shine! The oil’s key ingredient is called the oleo-complexe, which is comprised of four rich oils. It gives incredible shine, restoration and deep conditioning to the hair.

Grey is also definitely the new blonde, so for those looking to give the fashion-forward colour a try, don’t forget to tell your stylist to add a smart bond to the colour to protect the hair and prevent breakage.

Redken’s Sea Salt Spray helps create those natural beach waves every girl dreams about without leaving your hair feeling clammy. Infused with sea salt, the spray gives hair a matte finish.

Hitting the beach?

Natural oil is good for scalp so choose a good dry hair shampoo so that you don’t wash your hair every day!

If you are planning to hit the beach this summer, then you will have to learn how to braid. Braids are so much better on dirty textured hair and the most popular one at the moment is the loose side fishtail braid.

How to care for your hair this summer: The sun and salt add extra damage to your hair, so if you want to

EYEBROWS 101: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR BROWS

The Perfect Brow 1. Invest in a good technician. 2. Use the right tools when shaping your brows. 3. Use the appropriate products for the look you are trying to achieve. 4. Never tweeze your brows. 5. Don’t “over” fill your eyebrows. Your brows should start light at the beginning and go darker towards the end of your brow. 6. Work with your natural brow- don’t try and change your eyebrow shape into an eyebrow that’s not yours. 7. Use a highlighter to lift your brow and a concealer to give the illusion of a clean and tidy brow. 8. For a textured brow- you should make use of three products according to the make-up workshop and style guide of international celebrity make-up artist, Hrush Achemyan. 9. Invest in a good growth serum. Especially if you have sparse and weak brows. 10. Brush your brows with a disposable mascara wand- brush up in the front and sideways towards the end and tail of your brow. 11. Place your arch in the right place. Arches are not extremely round and neither are they very “V”. 12. Never use a black pencil or powder to fill your brows.

How to shape your brow according to your face shape: 1. When measuring and shaping your own brows, the “rule of thumb” is important.

If there’s anyone who knows a thing or two about eyebrows, it’s Unaiza Moideen, brow specialist and owner of The Brow Bar SA. Known for breaking boundaries, Unaiza has built her business from the ground up, her bar becoming the most successful eyebrow and lash bar in the country, and she’s wielded an enormous influence in the beauty industry. Here are some of her eyebrow shaping tips every girl should follow:

PAGE 35

2. There should be more or less a thumb width between your brows. 3. To measure the end of your brow take a ruler and mark from the outer corner of your nose straight through the outer corner of your eyethis will indicate where your brow should end. 4. Now the difficult part: to find your arch, look closely at the top part of your brow and notice the last hair toward the end of your brow this will indicate where your arch is. 5. Only tweeze in those areas if you have to, but preferably avoid tweezing.

ossusvlei Desert Lodge in Namibia offers unrivalled stargazing from its observatory in the NamibRand Nature Reserve, which has been declared as Africa’s first International Dark Sky Reserve.

The lodge recently underwent a massive renovation that encompasses a refreshing, yet elegant look. The revamp can be spotted in all the guest rooms, lobby, restaurant, pool and bar area. Sossusvlei Lodge now offers a combination of superior and standard units and a luxurious junior suite, which have been carefully designed to blend in perfectly with the surrounding natural environment and retain that special feeling of being one with nature.

Namibia is one of the few places on Earth with the lowest light pollution. In fact, it has become a hotspot for astronomy photographers and the Sossusvlei Lodge highlights this natural wonder. “Viewing the pristine night sky over the NamibRand is an unforgettable experience,” says Dr. George Tucker, one of Sossusvlei Lodge’s international resident astronomers. With the nearest town 140km away, there are no sources of light pollution and the reserve’s sky is one of the darkest yet measured. The absolute silence and dramatic landscapes contribute towards making Sossusvlei Desert Lodge one of the best settings in the world for stargazing.

Each superior unit features a patio, where one can enjoy the magnificent views over the Desert’s famous landscapes, and a spacious air-conditioned bedroom for those hot sunny days. Plus, the stylish en-suite bathrooms are each equipped with a modern corner bathtub, spacious shower, toilet and double vanity. The elegant junior suite serves as a tranquil romantic retreat in the Desert. Designed to fully take advantage of the unsurpassed views, the suite consists of a luxurious queen-size bed, adjacent living area and a private terrace boasting a small splash pool. The Lodge also offers a range of scenic helicopter rides over the breathtakingly beautiful grass plains, the Sesriem Canyon and through the hidden mysteries of Deadvlei. Other activities include a quad buggy nature trail, hot air ballooning and a guided nature walk through the Elim Dune. Although winter (April to September) provides the clearest skies for sky-watchers and stargazers, summer provides its own selection of breathtaking night sights, including a globular cluster known as 47 Tucanae – a several-billion-year-old cluster of over a million stars. Sossusvlei Desert Lodge is the perfect choice for travellers who wish to rediscover the beauty of the stars and for those seeking a desert adventure, amidst a peaceful paradise.

LEXUX LC500: PRECISION, POWER & PERFORMANCE

Chris Jones, Sales Executive from Lexus Fourways discusses his newfound love of the beauty and the beast that is the newly launched Lexus LC500.

Beauty becomes far more seductive when it’s paired with power and the newly launched Lexus LC500 has no shortage of either. It sets new benchmarks of luxury, styling, performance and technology and goes beyond being a new luxury model – it’s now the flagship sports coupe for Lexus. Based on the LF-LC Concept car that debuted in 2012, Lexus wasn’t originally going to turn the sleek concept into a production reality, but thanks to the overwhelming positive reaction from the public, the Lexus team got to work. The LC500 is the result of the combined passion of engineers and designers, and their hard work and attention to detail has paid of. According to the Chief Engineer, Koji Sato, the Lexus team spent more than triple the amount of predicted time perfecting the road feel of the LC500. “We want to make cars that are exhilarating in every way – inside, outside and under the hood” explained Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota Motor Corporation. Once you get behind the wheel of the LC500, these words become real. The head-turning exterior style is

Favourite restaurant I’m a sucker for GREAT sushi and dim sum, so my go-to would have to be Koi in Sandton. Since falling pregnant, I am craving a lot of salty and spicy foods, so soy sauce and wasabi are everything to me right now. I could drink the soy, haha.

Favourite coffee spot I recently had coffee and cake at Gabriella’s Tea Room in Parktown North (formerly The Pudding Shop) and it was decadent. Their food is delicious and their cakes are phenomenal too. I highly recommend their carrot and pineapple cake.

Favourite hotel I would have to say The Saxon hotel in Sandhurst. Their spa is incredible too. The atmosphere is fantastic and their therapists are world class. The surroundings are just breathtaking and you really feel like you’re out of JHB.

IN THE CITY WITH…

ROXY BURGER The gorgeous actress, Top Billing Presenter and Celebrity Blogger shares her favourite spots around the city. PAGE 50

Favourite nightclub or bar I’m far too old to go clubbing, but I’d say The Good Luck Bar on Fox Street in town is great for a bit of a vibe. Especially their ‘80s and ‘90s parties - too much fun. They have fantastic DJs and live acts. We also enjoy going to The Living Room in Maboneng Precinct for sundowners on Sundays. It has a fantastic atmosphere!

Favourite breakfast spot Pablo Eggscobar in Melville, by far! The best eggs ever. I find they have very unique dishes and their breakfasts are always different - not the usual eggs on toast! Plus, they serve champagne and who doesn’t love a glass of champagne with breakfast?
