FROM THE

Editor

HERE’S TO HEALTH AND HAPPINESS

A

lthough I’m not usually one to fuss when things go wrong, this month I’ll admit I found myself pretty overwhelmed. I was hospitalised a few times this past month and things weren’t going so well.

I am finally on the mend and doing well but the entire experience really left me reassessing my life – professionally, personally and emotionally. It’s been a year of highs and lows, successes and failures, and trials and tribulations. And now that the year is almost over, it’s always good to take a step back and reflect on what this year has brought you. December might be a time for celebration and joy but it’s also a time for reflection. And I hope you all can do just that over the holidays. With that said, read all about our time spent in Tanzania (page 64) and the Kruger National Park (page 58) in this issue’s travel section. We chat to our cover star, Maps Maponyane about life as a TV star, philanthropist and entrepreneur (page 28). Plus, Lou Harvey reveals her inspiration behind her latest wallpaper collection. (page 22) We also feature Saint restaurant, Sandton’s hot spot that after just a few short months of being open, is still making waves in the restaurant industry. Chef Sylvester Nair from DaVinci’s Maximillien restaurant gives his advice to young chefs trying to make it in today’s climate. Make sure to read up on all things hot and happening in the city and find out which new restaurants have opened their doors. We also include the latest events that saw Joburg’s finest attend and chat to media personality Bontle Modiselle (page 72). All in all, we hope you enjoy our December/January issue and we wish you a happy, healthy and not-so-hot festive season! Happy New Year! Until next time,

Givenchy Mini Pandora Box Chain Bag This baby pink Pandora box chain bag by Givenchy is the perfect accessory this summer! 2 Balenciaga Arena Leather Low Sneaker Sticking to the pink theme this December, Balenciaga have released these stunning neon pink sneakers. Sneakers are all the rage at the moment, and I just love pairing them with a good pair of jeans or even maxi skirts. Styled with a tonal midsole and mineral-tanned in Italy for softness, I have no doubt they’ll put a spring in your step.

Tag Heuer Formula 1 Lady Tag Heuer recently opened their flagship boutique store in Sandton City and launched their latest Formula 1 Ladies Diamonds collection. These redesigned watches are set with diamonds for a dash of glamour and come with interchangeable straps in a range of modern, on-trend colours, including my favourite - magenta pink.

Nutribullet Since the NutriBullet launched in SA a little over 5 years ago, it’s grown into a household name and become the appliance of choice for a healthy lifestyle. And of course, I’m all about healthy eating. Not only is the NutriBullet incredibly easy to use and clean but you can also choose from other blenders within the family like the Baby Bullet or Veggie Bullet. Or simply opt for the original in their latest colour, pink!

O BAG LAUNCHES IN SOUTH AFRICA

The official launch of the first South African O Bag store caused quite the stir recently, as these much-coveted designer handbags are being sported by international (and a few local) celebs and are the customisable handbag that every woman should have at least one of, in her collection. O Bag is an Italian handbag and shoulder bag collection that allows its owners to ‘create their own bag’ if you will. The bags are simple, yet beautiful and stylish, as well as being practical. Select your bag shape, your inner, your handles and even little bag accessories and put together your unique bag – what’s not to love? The O Bag bodies are made of a lightweight foam called XL Extralight®, which is soft and warm to touch, waterproof, strong, flexible and anti-microbial and come in a number of sizes, styles and colours. The mix and match concept is really cool, and the freedom to customise to suit your style, outfit and taste is something that we really love, and the chances of ever meeting someone with the exact same bag as you is highly unlikely. The store, located in the trendy Bedford Centre shopping mall, offers a wide variety of colours, styles and of course accessories too – great gift idea. www.facebook.com/obagsouthafrica

The team at Inception Diamonds will help you design your very own piece to your specification and price bracket as well, or you can select from some of the already designed pieces too. FESTIVE BUBBLES FROM DOM PÉRIGNON

It is the season for celebration and what better way to usher in the New Year, than with good friends and an exquisite bottle of vintage Dom Pérignon champagne. Dom Pérignon 2006 is superlative, luminous and glorious. Its original generosity - ample and tactile - is enhanced by a clear structure that gives it freshness and precision unlike other wines of that vintage. Light and airy on the nose, the floral and fruity tone then unfolds and quickly darkens into candied fruit, ripe hay and toasted notes, along with hints of liquorice. On the palate you can expect the wine to become more complex and edgy, silkier than it is creamy, and the whole eventually melts into an exquisite bitterness tinged with the briny taste of the sea. Available from select bottle stores and Norman Goodfellow’s - www.ngf.co.za

J’SOMETHING LAUNCHES GIN RANGE

There literally is nothing that Mi Casa's front man - J'Something cannot do, and 2018 has been a good year for him, and now - wait for it - he has launched a range of gins too. Jin Gin (because it's so good you should say it twice and also it has to have a J'Something - geddit - in the name), this range offers 3 tasty variants - including Rooibos, Orange and Honey, Tomato and Sweet Piquant Peppers and Honey and Olives. For Jin Gin, J'Something teamed up with local craft gin experts, Craft Link the makers of the award winning Ginologist Gin, and the result is not only a gin that has great flavour but that has a personality too.

New fave summer drink? Quite possibly. Now available at select Pick 'n Pay and Ultra Liquors.

FUJIFILM INSTAX SQUARE SQ6 Our go to accessory this summer has to be our Fuji Instax camera – guaranteed to turn you in to the life and soul of the party. The new Instax Square SQ6 has a whole bunch of really cool features – such as multiple exposures – allowing you to overlay two photos on to one, a selfie mirror to make sure your selfie is perfect before you hit the button, and even three different colour flash covers that allow you to create different moods and lighting, all in one easy clip on cover. Automatic Exposure Control is a plus, as it brightens both the subject and background for capturing photos within dark rooms and night scenes and the Macro Mode allows you to capture subject’s close-up within a range of 30cm – 50cm from the lens. Foodie shots be winning! Fujifilm launched the camera in May this year, and it has been seen popping up at parties all over the city ever since. The fact that the picture prints out immediately and develops within roughly 90 seconds also means that the moment is not lost and your memories are captured in an old school photo too.

The Instax Square SQ6 is available at Orms and other good electronic suppliers.

HERMÈS INTRODUCES THE CAPE COD CHAINE D’ANCRE

Hermès have just released their new Cape Cod time piece, and although this particular style has been around for a number of years, with some additions and adaptions over time, the new look tosses its own aesthetic codes overboard by reinterpreting the anchor-chain link. Select either a black or white lacquered background, and prepare to be intrigued with the dial motif, which interweaves black spinel’s and aventurine or diamonds and white mother-of-pearl. Its modern font with an offset logo is enhanced by slim hands and a gem-set rectangular bezel. Select from a single or double tour alligator strap and be prepared to turn heads with this daring style, with a slightly mischievous undertone. www.picotandmoss.co.za

SMITH JEWELLERY’S SHORELINE COLLECTION Shoreline, the latest collection from Smith Jewellery has been in the making for over four years. Daily beach walks and soothing ocean swims on her honeymoon in Thailand saw Founder and Creative Director, Anna Raimondo, dreaming of creating beautiful beach and sea inspired pieces, of silver dipped starfish, seaweed drenched in gold and sand textured sea urchins. The collection displays the finest details of shells and seaweed, etched by hand in to sterling silver and 22 carat gold pieces – necklaces, rings and earrings. You would be forgiven for thinking that the pieces are actual shells that have been dipped in to molten liquid and set out to dry – no attention to detail has been spared by Anna. All pieces in the collection are handmade using ethically sourced materials from South Africa.

One of our fave foods (peanut butter) combined with one of our fave nougat brands, Sally Williams, makes for happy days indeed! The memory of taking a bite out of mom’s delicious peanut butter and jam sandwich or sneaking a teaspoon of peanut butter right out of the jar, peanut butter is a taste that is so filled with childhood nostalgia and evokes the indulgent memories of delicious snack moments. MEET LOU HARVEY – ENTREPRENEUR, MOTHER, TREND SETTER The Lou Harvey brand has become synonymous with high quality, unique design and vibrant colours and has been on the market for over 10 years now. By Heather Hook

N

ow selling around the globe (most recently in the USA), this sophisticated range is the realization of Lou’s desire to balance style and functionality for every woman at any lifestyle juncture: whether you are a new mom in need of a nappy/diaper bag, taking a trip to the beach, headed to the golf course or the gym or even catching a plane, Lou’s creations are designed to support your journey in the most practical and fashionable way. A mom herself, Lou keeps innovating with cool designs and colours that she loves. We recently caught up with Lou to find out more about this Durban-based entrepreneur…

After studying fashion design and interiors, I began my career designing cushions for Wetherlys and Home Fabrics where I learnt many tricks of the trade. I then saw an opportunity to buy a business that made bags and slowly moulded and developed the business into what I envisioned.

YOU RECENTLY CREATED A STUNNING WALLPAPER COLLECTION, LOU, WELL DONE! TELL US ABOUT THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE COLLECTION AND THE PATTERNS?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE OUT OF ALL YOUR RANGES, AND ONE THAT EVERY LADY SHOULD HAVE IN HER ARTILLERY?

Thank you. The launch of my wallpaper collection is the realisation of a long held dream and comes after much experimentation. It was the ideal opportunity to marry my love of interiors and textile design and is the perfect platform to use my designs on a bigger platform. I have had such fun as I can adjust the scale and colour of my designs to suit a particular space, which adds so much scope to what can be achieved. Textiles have always been my first love and using pattern and colour to express yourself in your home is really quite liberating. The range offers something for everyone and takes inspiration from a variety of sources – from elements of nature to exotic destinations like Morocco – it gives a nod to current trends (such as design’s fascination with botanicals and the current craze for geometrics), yet maintains a classic, timeless appeal. I am inspired by so many different things, from images, plants, buildings on my travels, architecture and also our beautiful local landscape. I am also an avid Pinner (I think its actually a superpower!)

YOU STUDIED INTERIOR DESIGN CORRECT? HOW DID THAT MORPH IN TO YOUR OWN COMPANY AND THE RANGES THAT YOU DO NOW?

After giving birth to my daughter, Izzy, I noticed there was a huge need for beautiful mummy-friendly accessories that were fashionable, yet practical. The first Lou Harvey store opened 15 years ago in in Durban and we now have 7 stores and our online store to make the brand more accessible around the country.

I love the versatility of the Pack Bag, these rectangular shaped oversized hold-all’s can be packed to capacity and fit perfectly when packed individually into the car – we have one (or two) per family member in their choice of pattern and design! It’s an essential!

LOU HARVEY IS ALSO AVAILABLE OVERSEAS – HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT? The demand for the brand just grew – also through word of mouth. We first became global by having the brand available in the UK and we are now also in Singapore, the US and Australia.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? The new collection is will be launching in the next few weeks so watch this space! Also look out for gorgeous swimming costumes for little ones and towels for summer. I’m also exhibiting at a show in Tokyo, so I’m really excited about that!

BOOKS OR MOVIES, AND WHY? I would say both. I enjoy the silence and disconnect of reading and getting into a good book, but when I’m tired I love getting caught up in a great series or movie on Netflix!

MAPONYANE Growing up with a famous soccer legend as a father didn’t affected Maps one bit. In fact, the young Maps didn’t even realise what his dad even did until he was about seven or so and was watching soccer on TV. His parents taught him many things, but the one thing that stuck was that one should never take for granted the encounters that you have with people, and to treat everyone with the exact same manner and respect. This is obvious to see in Maps daily dealings with the many people with whom he shares his time and space. His dad also taught him that there is no such thing as impossible, it just takes time, so if you want it you need to put in the time and pick away at it slowly until you get there – again the evidence of this is clear in Maps’ life, and likely a reason that this 28 year old has built his brand like very few others. ‘I am very OCD. Like super OCD, and I make the time to pay attention to every detail of every facet of my brand and my life.’ Detail orientated he is indeed and refuses to tackle something unless he knows that he will be able to give it his full time and attention. Without any PR or admin assistance until recently, Maps still has a hand on everything pertaining to his brand, from selecting projects, managing his social media – this is a an ‘ecosystem’ that works like clockwork. STRAIGHT UP EIGHT WITH MAPS… HOW DO YOU RELAX? Read or play social sports with friends. And play music – all kinds, I love music.

DO YOU HAVE A STRANGE HABIT? Being very OCD I put my clothes on in a particular order! My favourite number is 7, so everything should have a 7 in it, and even if I change the volume on a device like the radio or TV, it must have a 7 in it.

FAVOURITE MOVIE EVER? Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind or Inglorious Bastards.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE WORLD? Home, without a doubt. After that, Japan.

WHAT MAKES YOU NERVOUS? The possibility of being unprepared, or by that token, being mediocre.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU NERVOUS? Probably go to the bathroom!

WHAT SHOW IS ON YOUR PLAYLIST OR ON CATCH-UP RIGHT NOW? I don’t watch TV at all.

YOU HAVE A LOT OF FOLLOWERS – BUT WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE PEOPLE TO FOLLOW? Photographers, artists, illustrators, architects – anyone that focusses around beautiful imagery. And people that challenging themselves and their boundaries are also a huge inspiration to me.

If you have dark skin, and you’re struggling with pigmentation, science says artificial light caused by mobile and electronic devices may be to blame. SkinCeuticals has two serums to help counteract the damages caused by artificial light. CE Ferulic is a daytime vitamin C serum that delivers advanced environmental protection and improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness, and brightens the skin’s complexion. Phloretin CF is a vitamin C serum for neutralising damaging free radicals and restoring discolouration resulting in a brighter, more radiant, even complexion.

LOUIS VUITTON ATTRAPE-RÊVES

I

f fresh and floral fragrances are your thing – you will love the latest offering from the House of Louis Vuitton, Attrape-Rêves. This scent was released in September this year, and is Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud’s expression of capturing the beauty of fleeting moments like a cloud of fireflies and shooting stars.

Like the Northern Lights appearing out of nowhere, Attrape-Rêves (which means Dream Catcher) is the fragrant embodiment of supernatural phenomena forever embedded in the memory of some far-flung exploration. Inspired by such waking dreams, the scent of raw cocoa powder mingles with a bouquet of peonies, artfully blended with patchouli heart, enlivened by litchi’s fresh and sparkling notes. This is certainly a festive fragrance in celebration of wonderment.

SYLVESTER NAIR

FROM THE DAVINCI HOTEL

In the bustling heart of Sandton, lies the hidden gem that is the Maximillien restaurant. Conveniently located in the da Vinci Hotel, this hot spot is well known by locals and internationals alike for not only its creative and inspired menu, but also for its beautiful, old school New York inspired dĂŠcor and views out over the hustle and bustle of the Sandton streets below.

T

he man behind the culinary creativity and menu revolution at The Maximillien is none other than Durban born chef, Sylvester Nair – who has culinary blood in his veins. His father is a well-known chef and Sylvester spent much time in the kitchen at the hotels that his dad worked at when he was a youngster.

also love to see my staff happy. They cook because they love it, sometimes I just stand back and watch them – they are literally like an orchestra together. It’s beautiful.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT ABOUT THIS INDUSTRY? For me, moving from a banqueting kitchen to a five-star kitchen was a massive adjustment, and also moving from French fine dining to a la carte service too, but it doesn’t take long – a few weeks and you are back in the groove. Another challenge that I, particularly, faced was being so young in the industry and battling to make a name for myself – luckily now that I am slightly older, people know who I am, and my name precedes me now.

BY THAT TOKEN, WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF YOUR JOB? It has to be the smile on a guest face when they have the first, or last bite of their meal – they are happy and that makes me happy. I

my dad’s!

TELL US ABOUT THE NEW MENU – WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT? We went from a French bistro style menu to a New York style menu, modelled on the Balthazar in New York, and it’s a very different menu. It includes some typically American items like sticky wings and pork ribs, and then more local dishes like oxtail and a lamb shank done in pastry which is a take of sorts on a Beef Wellington – but always five star in preparation and presentation. The DAVINCI lounge menu has also had a revamp – it’s South African So-Ho – with a very cool local vibe.

BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED? Be humble. I got that from my dad, of course. Work hard and treat people with respect – you can’t come straight out of college and behave like Gordon Ramsey, you have to work for your place, like the older chefs above you worked for theirs. I actually have this tattooed on my chest, so that I will never forget.

A WORD OF ADVICE FOR YOUNG CHEFS? Listen more and talk less. Get on with others – being a chef is similar to many other industries too, it’s all about team work, and not about “I”.

DO YOU EVER HAVE A DAY OFF? Yes on Sunday – I am on the Morning Show on E-Tv on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, live from 06h00 – 08h00 so I do quite a lot of prep work and I get up really early to be in studio. But I am young, and it’s fun. We laugh a lot and do crazy things. I also like to create new dishes and play around in the kitchen when I am off, so, always food.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO SHARE WITH OUR READERS? I want people to come to the Maximillien? Laughs loudly No really, it’s the emerald in the Queen’s crown. Oh, and watch my show – it’s on point.

MOTHERLAND COFFEE Benmore Centre, Benmore Gardens

The latest offering from Motherland Coffee is located in the heart of Benmore, in the bustling Benmore Centre, which itself has just seen a major revamp and is one of our go to malls for just about everything these days.Located in the light-filled centre atrium area, this is a super spot to come and grab a coffee to go, or to meet a friend for a light lunch. Many décor items in the store like the overhead wooden block feature, as well as the cork chairs in the lounge area, were created by local artists, and of course, like all Motherland Coffee’s – we love that they promote sustainable farming in communities, allowing farmers to receive a steady crop income too. Fast, strong Wi-Fi is a huge bonus for those who need to get some work done, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Following the speakeasies of yesteryear, access to the bar is through the laundromat in the front of the building before arriving in the plush Mexican styled bar at the back. Offering one of the biggest selections of tequila we have ever seen, J. Rabbit’s cocktail menu uses predominantly tequila and mezcal and even features some tequila brand’s that are not yet available to the public in SA yet. The food menu is South American inspired, yet offers some great classics as well, and this will certainly be an experience like no other for discerning foodies and cocktail lovers alike. J. 19 4th Avenue, Parktown North Named after his two late grandfathers, this is Chef James Diack’s fourth venture and we love it! If funky, cool and creative cocktails are your thing – then you will love it as much as we do, too. From the décor which carries a rather ritzy, burlesque feel, to an extensive wine selection which will leave every taste and palate satisfied this is an experience from start to finish. Cocktails are created with passion and the names are delightful - The Black Pearl, a rum based cocktail, was a huge hit at our table. On the food side James has created a snack menu to go with the cocktails and a more substantial menu to go with the wines, although mixing and matching is encouraged and whether you are after an afterwork drink, or a dinner out with your other half, you will not be disappointed. 010 900 3894

A

ugust this year, acclaimed international chef, David Higgs, together with business partner and entrepreneur Gary Kyriacou of Marble fame, opened their latest offering, Saint ‘Pazzo Italiano’ in the trendy Marc precinct in Sandton. Fast forward a few months later, and the restaurant is still the number one destination amongst celebrities, socialites and foodies. It even won the 2018 Eat Out VISI Style Award for its off-the-wall design. The first thing you notice when you step into Saint is the dome, which features a series of moving and changing artworks and scenes mapped by state of the art 3D projectors. In one moment it displays a night sky, and in another, a replica of the historic and grand Sistine Chapel. Their pizza ovens are all adorned with gold mosaic, which have been imported from Italy. The bar area takes its inspiration from the 50s with pink feather lamps, neon blue bar stools and blush velvet ottomans. Plus, there’s a marble angel emerging from the wall that adds another Renaissance element. The interior of Saint is sexy, retro chic and tongue-in-cheek while the food praises all things Italian. While Marble has gained kudos for celebrating quintessentially South African fair, Saint sees the powerhouse duo introduce the concept of “Pazzo Italiano”, meaning “Mad Italian” – an offering which encompasses pizza and pasta as well as a range of dishes cooked on woks and an open fire.” It’s not an Italian restaurant but there is a definite Italian feel,” says David. The menu features clever little takes on classic dishes like creamy burrata with wood-fired tomatoes, crispy squid-ink croquettes stuffed with squid heads and Neapolitan pizzas. Other options include their light and fluffy ricotta gnocchi in romesco sauce and rich tiramisu with mascarpone gelato. (010 594 5888) info@saint.restaurant

JOCK

SAFARI LODGE

KRUGER NATIONAL PARK’S HIDDEN GEM Located on a private 6 000-hectre concession within the Kruger, Jock is roughly a 45-minute drive from Malelane Gate, which is over a four-hour drive from Sandton. Getting to the gate is pretty smooth sailing. By Zara Briner

here are numerous hot spots to visit along the way and the route features some of the country’s most magnificent attractions, with scenic views or mountainous backdrops. For us, the drive was pleasant… until we arrived at Malelane Gate that. After paying for the entrance gate fee, our car wouldn’t start. Luckily for us though, Jock’s entire staff were nothing short of amazing and when we called them to explain our unfortunate situation, they were happy to assist and sent a field guide to collect us at the gate. After arriving at the Main Jock Lodge, our car troubles were quickly forgotten about as we walked into the main reception area to meet the friendly team. Jock Safari Lodge oozes luxury, class and sophistication while still being true to the beauty of the bush. We still had time to grab a quick bite to eat before our first game drive, and were ushered to the main dining area. Overlooking serene riverbeds, the rest of the outside deck features a heated communal pool, sun loungers and cosy couches. There are 12 individual thatched luxury rooms at Jock Safari Main Lodge, each with an outdoor shower, outdoor Elizabethan bath and an outdoor bed for those looking to fall asleep under the stars. It’s all about the attention to detail at Jock Safari. The rooms are beautifully decorated with a modern, yet old school colonial twist. Each room also features their own private pool, which makes those days lounging by the pool even more intimate. After getting changed into something more comfortable, we made our way to the reception area for our game drive. We met two lovely couples in the game vehicle, one from Australia and the other from America, and could tell straight away that Jock Safari had cemented themselves as a prime destination for tourists. Our first game drive was like something out of a movie. We managed to see The Big Four (something that rarely happens), including two leopards that were being chased away by baby elephants. In fact, all the animals

we saw were found in Jock’s private concession, so we never had to venture out into Kruger territory and our entire experience was that much more exclusive. Upon our return we were treated to a 3-course dinner on the outside deck with the gorgeous night sky above us. Starters included butternut soup, our main was chicken breast on the bone served with potato gratin and veggies and dessert was Crème brûlée. The next morning was another day to see more wildlife. Jock and its surroundings is home to an abundance of elephants and rhino, amongst others, so you’re never short of animal sightings. Our field guide, Lazarus went out of his way to educate us on the different species found in the Kruger. Whether it was about birds, plants or wildlife, Lazarus made sure we were clued up on everything there was to know about wildlife and it was his passion for his job that made us excited about each game drive. Not to mention his incredible ability to spot and track animals and even tracked two female lions with their baby cubs on foot. That night dinner was served in Jock’s boma area and consisted of a delicious buffet and carvery. Because we had developed such a close relationship with the American and Australian couple, we ended up spending the night together, chatting and eating away till midnight. It was a lovely way to end off a very busy, productive day. Everything at Jock Safari Lodge exceeded our expectations. The lodge is secluded from the rest of the Kruger, so if it’s a private weekend getaway you’re after, then this is certainly the place for you. All in all, we had a fabulous time and were spoilt from start to finish. The entire trip was one for the books – Jock is a unique, luxury bush experience.

which adds to the air of history and adventure that exudes from this city. The hotel is modern and beautifully decorated in dark, polished woods and leather, with an exotic Moroccan theme running through it – artfully blended with an intrinsically African feel as well, from the arches and carved wood work partitioning’s to the fresh green plants and gleaming tiles (it’s too hot for carpets in this part of the world.) Head back to ground floor to go exploring and push open the heavy wooden doors that lead to the Baraza Café, Grill & Bar - one would be forgiven for thinking perhaps you were about to enter a middle Eastern souk, and the delicious aroma’s wafting from the kitchen are enough to set your mouth watering almost immediately. The fusion menu offers a wide variety of options from the standard burgers and salads to tasty local fresh fish, calamari and meat cuts and we have to just mention the Baraza Swahili Prawn Curry which was such a hit that we had it two nights in a row. You will certainly not be stuck for choice, and the service was efficient and friendly. At the rear of the hotel you will find the crystal-clear pool, with surrounding lush gardens and this is where we spent a few days gathering our thoughts and enjoying the beautiful peace and tranquillity of this lush area, complete with cocktail in hand, of course! The hotel also has an upmarket gym, lightning speed Wi-Fi and conferencing facilities, and although predominantly a business hotel, it served as the perfect, central base for our exploring and adventures during our time there. A stroll through the streets in the morning is a refreshing look at how the locals live their day to day life, although it does get quite warm around midday, and the hotel is situated right next to the well-known botanical gardens, with an interleading gate, and a walk around these is highly recommended as well. Within walking distance is the General History Museum in which we spent a morning exploring more about the rich and diverse cultural heritage that moulded this country in to what it is today. We utilised the services of a driver and tour guide during our stay and found that not only the most affordable and efficient way to get around, but also appreciated his recommendations on the best things to see, and what to skip, too. A trip out to Oyster Bay and Coco Beach is a must – and do stop by Tinga Tinga Market to purchase some beautiful paintings, art work and other memorabilia to take home with you. If you are feeling peckish on your trip, The Slipway in Oyster Bay offers a selection of restaurants, shops and some cool local eateries as well – we enjoyed a traditional beef stir-fry with rice and a side of leafy greens resembling spinach, which was not only delicious but a bargain, located in what used to be a shipping container that has cleverly been turned in to a bar and eatery with funky artwork and paintings adorning the walls. A two-hour ferry trip away lies the beautiful island of Zanzibar, birth place of the formerly mentioned Freddie Mercury, and no visit would be complete without a walk around the historic, and bustling Stone Town.

Bontle Modiselle is certainly one of South Africa’s most multifaceted performers. Over a relatively short period of time, this Soweto-born beauty has gone from an unknown dancer with just a dream, to one of the country’s most sought after film-and TV personalities.

Bontle - tell us about your youth. Where did you grow up, and about the dancing of course! I was born in Soweto, Rockville on my maternal side, Dube on my paternal end, but raised in Berea and later North East JHB. I’m one of 3 daughters to an incredibly amazing woman, who singlehandedly raised us on her own from the time of my father’s passing in 1997. I attended primary school at Johannesburg Girls’ Preparatory School, and that’s when the initial dance bug bit me. I mimicked all things Boom Shaka and knew that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Performance.

Laughs - Thank you! Well, it wasn’t a conscious decision to become the latter. I just simply continued to work and nurture my craft, explored and furthered my other talents and interests and found that it resonated with a great deal of people. So, me serving my purpose is what got me here.

Ironically, I only regard myself as somewhat popular, not necessarily famous. Popularity isn’t an unfamiliar concept to me, so I’ve always been able to manage it, so I adapt and adjust well. I am also really good at blocking out ‘noise’.

A brand ambassador for Revlon, what a huge accolade! Did you feel that changed things for you after that announcement? Absolutely. From positioning to the types of boardroom conversations I was having. It came with great change.

Where to next for you – what’s coming up? I’m currently working in collaboration with one of the most respected broadcasting talents in the country, Siyabonga ‘Scoop Makhathini” Ngwekazi on a new show called ‘Breezer Vivid’ where we’ll be Living Life in Colour, as the slogan suggests, traveling the country, experiencing new things from Food, Fashion, Dance, Art etc, in partnership with MTV Base.
