SUMMERTIME MADNESS

W

e’re in the last quarter of the year and the only positive thing about reaching those end-of-year targets or deadlines is the fact that it’s summer. Because let’s face it, people are a lot jollier in summer and everything seems to move with greater ease. To celebrate the start of summer, I was invited to visit the gorgeous LUX* Belle Mare resort in Mauritius – and what a treat it was! I had only ever been to Mauritius once in the past – almost 16 years ago to be exact, and so I had no sense of what to expect, but everything at LUX* Belle Mare exceeded our expectations and the staff went above and beyond to ensure our trip was most memorable. A massive thank you must go to Elvis Follet, the brand’s Cluster Public Relations Manager, for guaranteeing we were well looked after throughout our stay. With that said, read all about our time spent at LUX* in this issue’s travel section and realise for yourself why LUX* is the ultimate luxury resort in Mauritius. (page 52) We chat to our cover star, Terry Pheto. about life as an actress, her favourite summer memories and the projects she’s currently working on. (page 18) Plus, Lady Nam gives her advice on the perks of running her own business. (page 38) Dr Matheo, aesthetics doctor at Lightsculpt Clinic in Rosebank, proves to us that we can all age gracefully (page 32) and Chef Coco Reinarhz, chef and owner of Epicure in Morningside, reveals what he likes to do on his off days. Make sure to read up on all things hot and happening in the city and find out which new restaurants have opened their doors. We also include our top fine dining restaurants to visit in the city and chat to DJ and presenter Thuli Phongolo about her favourite Joburg spots. All in all, we hope you enjoy our July/August issue and look forward to bringing you many more!

Until next time,

SCOTCH & SODA LAUNCHES NEW SEASON COLLECTION

Scotch & Soda launches its men’s and women’s collection for spring/ summer 2018, taking inspiration from the solo travellers of the world, ‘Seven Lights of Day’. The collection was sparked by the story of Australian writer and traveller Robyn Davidson, who is known for her 1,700-mile trek across the deserts of Western Australia. In 1977, Robyn was aged just 25 when she set out on her epic journey, and her bohemian spirit was the starting point for spring/summer’s light-filled collection. Dedicated to all the brave, solo travellers – those whose only travel companion is mother nature herself – the Seven Lights of Day collection references the transformation of light through 24–hours on the trail. From the soft pastels of sunrise and the heat-soaked hues of midday to the indigos of dusk and the fiery colours of campfire light – each time of day has a unique identity. Available at Scotch & Soda stores

TERRY PHETO

A LOCAL INSPIRATION Moitheri Pheto arrives for our cover shoot with a presence, and it’s clear to see why this award-winning actress is so prolific. Her passion and desire for projects that not only share a story but allow others a chance to shine is something that is critical to her.

T

erry first arrived on our screens in 2005 as the lead female role in the acclaimed Oscar-winning feature film Tsotsi and has since then worked tirelessly on a number of projects that share not only great stories, but also inspirational messages – with the promise of many more to come.

audiences as it is a co-production with a very talented local actor and producer that I am so drawn to stories with a strong female lead who stands in her power, and I adore producing – if the story is important it needs to be told. Being in front of the camera is not the most important things for me, it’s about getting the message across.

We caught up with Terry to find out more about her…

If your dream is only about you it’s way too small, and I love collaborations. This film will be out towards mid-2019, and I also finished a short film called The Locksmith in LA, which I have lined up to be released towards the end of this year.

Terry, what are you currently working on? I am currently in production for my next feature film. I am really excited to share this with

www.sandtonmagazine.com | 19

Tell us more about Faces, which premiered in July. This was such a special project for me. It was a UK production that really took me back to my roots in industrial theatre. I was looking for something that I could do that would make me feel good and spread a message and being able to work with such talented actors from the UK and France was incredible. I had also really been wanting to work with the director, Joseph Adejuwon Adesunloy, for so long – he is so creative, and he takes a subject that may be perceived as boring and breathes life in to it in a way that is beyond inspirational. I also got to put down roots in London for a while – it was really great. What is your bucket list travel destination? Ooooh! Laughs. I have about three, is that okay? Of course! Tokyo is my first one, and hopefully that’s happening in a month or so. I love Japan, its so interesting and traditional, history mixed with the new and technology, I find it quite intriguing. For similar reasons, Cuba. It’s picture postcard beautiful – bright and vibrant. I really would love to travel there before it’s commercialised totally. Greece also holds an historical pull for me, the beauty and the architecture – Athens would be fascinating. I love history! Summer is here, what is your favourite summer memory? (Laughs again) Watermelon! It reminds me so much of coming home from school in the heat of summer and sinking my teeth in to a chilly slice of watermelon. The purple jacaranda blankets and the smell after summer rain are also memories of home that I will never forget. Where will you be spending your summer holiday? I am going to be working a bit, but I will certainly be taking some time off. My family are all still in the Vaal and I can visit whenever I like, which is great. I am thinking of taking my mum on the Blue Train to Cape Town, and then do the Garden Route afterwards. I love road trips and I have the best playlists – Beyoncé all the way! Often, we spend so much time travelling overseas when we live

20 | www.sandtonmagazine.com

in such a beautiful country. It’s worth exploring it. What is your favourite South African food that reminds you of home? Mogodu – my mum makes the best Mogodu. I love to cook, but I always pretend that I can’t make it properly so that she will make it for me! I adore good food, and cooking is very therapeutic for me. I love getting creative in the kitchen, I get my sons involved and it is also a great way for us to spend time together. I hate doing the dishes afterwards though… What is your favourite item of clothing right now? You can never take your skin off, and I truly believe that your skin is one outfit that you will wear for the rest of your life. It’s all about using good products, drinking enough water and wearing sunscreen. To get through summer – you only need three things. One little black dress, one floral maxi dress, and a pair of jeans with a white shirt. With those three items you can survive summer, and they are easy to transform from day to night wear with a few accessories. Best advice you ever received? My mum and my late grandmother instilled in me that you should always respect people no matter who they are, or what walk of life they come from. I always give everyone the same attention. Whether it is during lunch with Prince Harry, or the cleaner at your local restaurant, be humble. If you could have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be and why? Without a doubt Ma Winnie Mandela and my late grandmother. When I was growing up my grandmother told us stories about Winnie and at night we prayed for her and Nelson. The fact that I got to play Ma Winnie in the miniseries Madiba was incredible for me. I always dreamt of having Ma Winnie over to my house and I would cook for her. I know my grandmother would have loved to meet her as well, so that would be my dream dinner.

AGEING GRACEFULLY Dr Matheo de Villiers, the popular aesthetics doctor based at Lightsculpt Aesthtic clinic in Rosebank, explores the meaning behind aging gracefully.

By Dr Matheo de Villiers

I

have always wondered what is meant by the phrase “aging gracefully”. Especially when the “graceful” individual has covered her grey hair with L’Oreal and her age-related sun spots with MAC foundation.

Don’t get me wrong, the purpose of this article is not to throw the first stone, but to seed a different concept of what it means to age gracefully.

support. Facial muscles become smaller and lose some of their tone. Ligaments and tendons lose laxity. Facial fat pads (both deep and superficial) lose volume, leaving us with a volume-loss saggy appearance. And our skin bears the brunt of our lifestyles and surrounding environmental factors. The major effect that is we are not only left looking older and less attractive, but we come across seeming more tired, angry and sad.

We live in an era where we incorporate diet, exercise, life coaches and chronic medicine into our lifestyles, in a hope to optimise our physical, mental and psychological wellbeing. By investing in the management of our internal diseases, we delay the effects of damage to our organs. By investing in the management of our emotional and psychological wellbeing, we feel and think at our best. By investing in physical activity and nutrition we ensure our body cells function at an optimal level.

It is especially these emotional factors that can severely influence our overall wellbeing. Being constantly told we look sad can eventually make us sad.

We invest in a goal to fight off disease and still remain looking our best.

Further expanding on my “ageing gracefully” definition, when it comes to management of aging, ensure that it is done as normal as possible to allow the body to function at its optimal.

If I am to apply the phrase “ageing gracefully” to one’s physical, mental and psychological wellness, my definition will be as follows: to delay aging and its effects as much as possible (prevention) and to intervene where needed (management). As a medical doctor I see aging as a disease because it promotes deficiency at every level mentioned. The appearance of an aged face is the result of disease-aging.

This is where aesthetic medicine plays a role and adds value to our overall health. Why not look the way we feel? Why not look after our external tissues the same way we look after our internal tissues? And why not age gracefully from bone to skin?

This is achieved by using medical graded product that is not toxic to any living body tissue. It may mimic normal body tissue and aids as support. It either serves as nutrition allowing optimal cell function, or it serves as tissue stimulation allowing rejuvenation. There should not be any long-term side effects. Hence, to age gracefully also means keeping it safe.

But in order for us to understand this, we first need to turn back the hands of time and look at a face during youth.

There are numerous treatments available to delay the aging process – all with medical support and evidence. These can range from minimally invasive treatments to cosmeceutical homecare.

A young face is the result of a few components functioning as one. Starting deep, a healthy full bone structure serves as foundational support for other structures to attach and rest on. Deep and superficial facial fat pads serve as volume and gives shape and contouring. Strong toned muscles are responsible for pulling everything together. Healthy ligaments and tendons keep all facial components in position, and a well-managed skin serves as the seal of unity.

Aesthetic medicine is not about changing the physical appearance of a person into someone unknown. The principles and makeup is scientifically based with the aim of optimising quality of life. Through the use of aesthetic medicine, and being safe at all times, your skin will experience escalating tissue function and skin rejuvenation. All of this while maintaining your uniqueness and individuality.

As the arms of time start to tick and aging starts to kick in, all of these structures are affected and slowly the unity is lost. Bone undergoes reabsorption, leaving us with less foundational

I can comfortably say that with some filler supporting my facial bone structures, surgical threads stimulating new collagen formation, and chemical peels promoting healthy skin cell turnover, I am Aging Gracefully.

A LADY OF MANY TALENTS Lady Nam (Nambitha Ben-Mazwi) is not only a local and international actress, MC and radio and TV presenter, but she has also started her own digital marketing company and has launched a successful career. We chat to her about life as an all-round business woman. By Heather Hook

Tell us about your trip to New York that launched your career? I grew up and found myself in New York City. I found my voice, my core value and survival strength. That saying, “if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere,” is true to every element. The city is tough. The people have a no-nonsense attitude – you have to keep up or you will get swallowed and crash. Being at The Stand Comedy Club was exciting. I was surrounded by comedy greats who themselves shared their stories of journey and growth with me. It was there when I realised I can truly be whatever I want, and that’s someone who wants to build a career in the Arts. My confidence and self-assurance was further entrenched there, and I carry the lessons of vulnerability that comedians have in order to reach and connect with their audience.

You have an Honours in Business Science – how do you feel it has assisted you with your career? It’s helped a great deal because I treat myself as a business first, and an artist second. I draft strategies for myself, and I put a lot of thought into strategic planning when it comes to my value proposition as an artist. Keeping your finger on the pulse in our industry is crucial. I set up projections and targets for myself and I always look at diversifying my portfolio. To me, fame and popularity isn’t important, but building a sustainable career and investing in properties is. I want to leave a legacy behind.

Tell us about your Digital Marketing company – and where on earth do you find the time to manage that as well?

38 | www.sandtonmagazine.com

It’s been tough as I started my media company that focuses on video productions and marketing for brands at a time when it wasn’t so popular, and when it picked up, I had to take a backseat as I was shooting e.tv’s Broken Vows for a year. I’ve become smarter now and have found a solid team through a joint venture so I don’t have to neglect the business due to my acting endeavours. If a business or brand needs any video production or digital marketing, then I’m always ready.

You have received a number of awards and accolades. Which one has had the most meaning to you? The Glamour Woman of the Year and the YOU spectacular favourite actress award both in 2016 – they were validating accolades that came as a surprise. I had just moved to Johannesburg and after a few months of entering the local industry here, I was so well received with those recognitions. It was comforting to know I was in the right place at the right time.

If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be? I would probably go back to Lisbon in Portugal – I have unfinished business there.

What book is next on your reading list? I Put A Spell On You: The Autobiography of Nina Simone. Anyone who knows me knows my obsession with Nina. I am literally preparing to play her one day in a movie remake of her life, so I am constantly researching her and feeding my intrigue and fascination so that when the time comes to execute her character, I am one with her being.

COCO REINARHZ FROM ÉPICURE Epicure is the restaurant name that is on everyone’s lips, and it’s no secret as to why. The Belgian-Burundian Chef has made a name for himself in the restaurant industry, and we were excited to pay him a visit. By Heather Hook

L

ocated in Central Square in Morningside, Épicure is a unique blend of Pan-African chic, and the distinctive menu features some creatively named dishes such as Taste of Tangier, Perfect Pepe, Hunters Reward, and the Rolex (a tasty beef curry wrap with a Ugandan twist.) Épicure in itself is an adventure from a décor perspective. Beautifully appointed booths and tables with low hanging woven grass lamps, beautiful blue suede fabric, and dark wood with leather chairs – its an interesting mix, but the entire collection works so well together that to remove anything would be a travesty to the look and feel. The Afri-tapas menu (or Share-Share as it is called) was where we started our journey, and it’s the best way to get a small taste of everything on offer. But, to be honest, we would certainly require several return trips to enjoy the full extent of what is on offer. The Leisurely Lagos – perfectly prepared calamari with Nigerian suya spices – was a huge hit at the table, as was the North-African style Lamb Tagine that we shared. And if dessert is your thing, then you will not be stuck for choice. We suggest the Blissful Mikate – DRC-style fritters with peanut butter ice cream.

44 | www.sandtonmagazine.com

Breakfast is also on the menu, as Coco opens his doors at 08h00, and the rum bar, complete with a state-of-theart humidor features some of the finest cigars to be found in Jozi. We love that they are open 7 days a week too. We caught up with Chef Coco to find out more about him, and of course the inspiration behind Épicure…

Coco, tell us about the idea and concept behind Épicure? The concept and idea for Épicure was to literally bring a Pan-African eating experience to South Africa; a restaurant and menu of a world class standard. I started with the concept of a space to match every mood, sophisticated but not intimidating. Then I started creating the menu, that changes according to my inclination but consistently offers a range of foods that I love. A rum bar that offers an African street food and delicious rum cocktail experience was the ultimate goal. I think I have achieved that.

How long did it take you put everything together, menu, décor etc? This has been a two-year journey for me, because I went into as much detail as I could, from the concept of the food to the wine list. Travelled to African countries for inspiration, taking a 360-degree approach to planning

everything to create an experience that will not soon be forgotten.

Singapore, Tokyo and Peru – these countries have always intrigued me – and clearly, I love to travel.

What is your favourite dish on the menu, that you always recommend?

Books or movies, and why?

It would have to be the guinea fowl, (prepared the Congolese way and served with cassava leaves). This dish reminds me so much of my time in the DRC.

What has been your biggest challenge with getting Épicure off the ground? The liquor license for sure. The usual process is 6 months but ours took 8 months. So we were ready to go, but could not serve alcohol, and without that we could trade.

Where would we find you on a day off – if you take a day off? In bed. (Laughs loudly)

What do you cook at home for your family? I never cook at home. My wife Nassim does the cooking, and it gives me a bit of a break. And to be honest, she is a better home cook than me!

Movies for sure. They helps me relax after a busy day.

If you could have dinner with any person (alive or dead) who would it be, and why? It would have to be my late mother. She inspired me so much I would love to be able to show her everything that I have achieved with her in mind. As the weather warms up the doors are thrown wide open to the beautiful terrace gardens outside, we suggest making a booking to secure your spot. Plans for the summer include daytime picnics on the lawn, with blankets, cushions and umbrellas and few other special treats. We honestly cannot wait to return and experience more amazing dishes from the soft spoken, yet passionate, Chef Coco.

P COCKTAIL ink Gin WITH MIRARI

M

irari Gin creator, Shanna-Rae Wilby heads up a distillery that has progressed from a 100 litre holding capacity to 100 000 litres since its founding.

In a recent trend report, it was revealed that consumers are turning towards artisanal beers and coffee, while in South Africa, consumers are moving over to luxurious artisan gins infused with a range of fragrant botanicals. The Latin roots of the word ‘Mirari’ are based in a sense of wonder – rooted in the miraculous and describing the act of observation and admiration. It is an apt descriptor for a range of gin that presents a unique and explosively sensory experience. The Mirari Gin range has three variants, each with their own unique signature. TAD’s Amber African Botanical Gin bears the mark of 13 botanicals that includes multiple botanicals that are indigenous to South Africa, including, Honeybush, Rose Geranium, Sour Figs and Boekenhout Honey. Each 500l litre batch of their Pink Damask Rose Gin, on the other hand, is distilled with over 1000 damask roses, chamomile, grapefruit, cubeb berries, green cardamom, and subsequently infused with rose water. The Blue Orient Gin counterpart represents a traditional spiced gin, bearing the flavours of Cardamom, Grapefruit, Grains of Paradise, Ginger and Cassia Bark. Naturally coloured through the subtle infusion of blue pea flowers, the gin magically transforms from blue to pink when tonic is added.

Ingredients 40ml Mirari Blue Orient Spiced Gin 20ml Fresh Lime Juice 10ml Raspberry Syrup Top with Ginger Bear A small handful of berries and edible flowers to garnish

Preparation Add all ingredients to a martini glass with ice. Stir and garnish with mixed berries and edible flowers (add an optional sprig of mint for freshness)

LUX* MAURITIUS

here are beach resorts and then there’s LUX*. LUX* Belle Mare is situated on the east coast of Mauritius, in Belle Mare, roughly an hour’s drive from the airport. The resort is set on the island’s widest stretch of beach and, in our opinion, home to one of the most beautiful pearly white beaches we have ever seen. Driving up to the entrance of LUX* Belle Mare, you are immediately overwhelmed by the beauty surrounding it, and enveloped into an experience that plucks you from your everyday life and drops you into a world that demands, that you stop and take a moment. We were escorted to our beach-view junior suite upon arrival, and were blown away by how spacious and modern it was. Designed in neutral tones with pops of bright colour to add character, the suite featured a larger than life king-sized bed, a relaxing sitting area, a balcony overlooking the gardens, a spacious bathroom and a walkin closet. We quickly settled in to what felt like a home away from home, knowing our first night’s sleep would be blissful. Waking up the next day to the sights and sounds of LUX* Belle Mare was like something out of a movie. Since we arrived late the night before, we had yet to see what was in store for us, and the setting certainly didn’t disappoint. The crystal clear waters were gently crashing against the shoreline, the sun glistened between the palm trees and the chirping sounds of the exotic birds reminded us that we were on a tropical island. We knew we had arrived in paradise. Breakfast that morning at MIXE restaurant, overlooking the largest swimming pool on the island, consisted of a selection of fresh, buttery pastries, creamy scrambled eggs, sautéed potatoes, chicken and parmesan sausages and ripe island fruits. We were then treated to an exhilarating full body massage at the resort’s five-star LUX* Me spa and discovered the art of coffee roasting at their signature Café LUX* coffee bar, which serves LUX*’s very own locally roasted coffee blend – a real treat for coffee lovers. Our day ended off with a gin tasting at the resort’s G&T100 gin bar, which serves 100 different gins infused with home-grown herb-infused tonics, and dinner at fine-dining Indian restaurant, Amari By Vineet. On day 3, we departed for a full day’s excursion to LUX* Grand Gaube located north of the island. LUX* Grand Gaube is exactly that – grand. The hotel underwent a complete refurbishment (approximately costing $34 million) last year and reopened their doors in December to much acclaim. Since then, LUX* Grand Gaube has joined the ranks of flagship LUX* Belle Mare, in becoming one of the best resorts on the island, and has made it onto ‘Top 5 Luxurious Resorts in Mauritius’ lists. Nestled in between coves and blessed with two gorgeous beaches and three swimming pools, LUX* Grand Gaube is an abundance of spectacular scenery and a true destination resort. Like LUX* Belle Mare, LUX* Grand Gaube also features 186 rooms, suites and villas, all with sea facing views and offers guests their choice of seven restaurants to dine at.

Popular restaurants include Peruvian and Argentinian restaurant INTI, Creole restaurant Bayan, the Palm Court, which features live cooking stations with sit-up counters, chef encounters and dishes cooked right before your eyes, and Bodrum Blue, a Turkish restaurant that serves humble and authentic Turkish cuisine. We chose to lunch here and tucked into freshly baked Turkish breads with freshly made dips, octopus salad, and kebabs of lamb, chicken and beef before retreating back to LUX* Belle Mare. The rest of our time at LUX* Belle Mare was spent lazing around by the beach basking in the island sun, catching up on emails and, of course, eating till our heart’s content. Yes, food, oh glorious food. Where do we even begin with the food? With four unique restaurants at LUX* Belle Mare, each offering authentic cuisine ranging from Chinese and Mediterranean to Indian, there was plenty to choose from. In fact, LUX* prides itself on the quality of their food and ensuring everyone enjoys the gastronomic journey it offers. We certainly went on a culinary journey around the world that kept our tummies satisfied throughout our stay. We experienced a taste of India at Amari By Vineet inspired by Michelin star chef Vineet Bhatia. Known for pioneering modern Indian cuisine, Vineet’s dishes are sophisticated, robust in flavour and delicately plated, and at Amari, things were no different. Some of our favourite highlights included the chicken murgh makhani and mouth-watering fish curry. From the food to the friendly staff, we were treated like royalty at Amari. Then there’s Beach Rough. If you’re in search of a more relaxed, laid-back Mediterranean venue reminiscent of a spot in the south Mediterranean Sea, then Beach Rouge is for you. Decked out with comfortable couches and high top tables, guests can spill out onto the inviting beachfront and enjoy the breath-taking view of the blue lagoon right in front of them. There’s certainly something for everyone at Beach Rouge, and when we visited this stylish beach eatery, we feasted on dishes like beetroot and gorgonzola risotto, crumbed dorado fish-burgers and strawberry and mascarpone parfait. At night time, Beach Rouge transforms into Bar Rouge – a beach bar come dining experience – where guests can even listen to the beats of a top international DJ performing in the background. And that’s not all. We also indulged on gourmet hamburgers at The Rolls-Royce Food Truck, a trailer attached to a 1933 Phantom Hooper Rolls-Royce, regularly snacked on homemade, in-house LUX* ice-cream brand, ICI, served out of a retro cart and explored Mauritian tradition with a rum tasting at the resort’s adorable rum hut, Mari Kontan. As for entertainment? Our stay was not limited to the resort as we got to travel to the neighbouring private island of Île des Deux Cocos. Getting to this exclusive island involved taking a small,

glass-bottomed motorboat, which allowed us to appreciate the coral reef growing beneath us. Once there, we visited the island’s famous villa, built in the 1920s by the British Governor of Mauritius, Sir Hesketh Bell. The villa has been completely restored to its original state, boasting a Moroccan-style courtyard, a garden laden with bougainvillea and an octagon-shaped Turkish bath. Activities on the remote island include small game fishing, scuba diving, snorkelling and exploring a shipwreck found on exclusive and secluded island. Île des Deux Cocos has astounding views of the azure waters and a beach with silky, soft sand. The beach chairs lining the shore are thoughtfully fitted with adjustable overhead shades, which made our sunbathing time a little more pleasant, but before we knew it, it was time to eat again. The lunch was a buffet of salads, pastas, burgers and the most incredible giant tiger prawns that were flame-grilled. Our day ended sampling the island’s homemade rums with flavours like vanilla and banana and chilli that will knock your socks off, and devouring sweet crepes filled with a decadent chocolate spread. Everything about LUX* screams luxury, especially the design and décor. No attention to detail has been spared. Both LUX* Belle Mare and LUX* Grand Gaube are Kelly Hoppen works of art. Kelly, a South Africanborn international award-winning interior decorator based in London, has combined contemporary and retro-chic styles to create warm and inviting spaces throughout the resorts. Both resorts offer all the leisurely tranquillity of a true island getaway – the LUX*-urious way!

INTRODUCING THE RANGE ROVER VELAR We tested the Range Rover will steal a few hearts.

By Wesley Greybe

I

s the Range Rover Velar the next evolution in Range Rover design? In fact, is it the next step in vehicle evolution? The concept was something of smooth lines and utter beauty. It is that car you would hang next to your poster girl on your bedroom wall. But as we know from the past, concept designs were intended to lure people in and create a want and need. After months of anticipation, dreaming of your Cinderella, the vehicle is eventually launched, and you land up with Cinderella’s stepsister. This is not the case with the Range Rover Velar, you get your Cinderella, and ‘den sum’. Stylistically it is the one vehicle that has stayed true to its concept design, of which some features are industry firsts on the interior and exterior. On the exterior, the flush deployable door handles are a first, and have a purpose of contributing to the aerodynamics

64 | www.sandtonmagazine.com

of the vehicle. Sleek stylish LED headlights and tail lights are standard on the Velar (only one in its class) and offers optional Matrix LED and Matrix-Laser LED headlights. LED Lights are slowly making their way into the industry as they have so many benefits. One main benefit being up to 300 meters of visibility compared to that of Xenon, which is 150 metres. Night driving is much clearer and using the closest natural colour to sunlight, helps with awareness and overall fatigue of the driver. Seeing as you spend most your time inside of the vehicle, the Range Rover Velar is riddled with technology and luxury. A big feature that would make kids go crazy is the “Touch Pro Duo” with two HD 10-inch touch screens in the centre consol. Utilising the space and simplifying the design giving it that “Less is More” feel, and it works well. This car makes you feel as if you got hold of Tony Stark’s technology, with

some practice you will navigate yourself around the vehicle with ease. The top centre screen controls functions such as, Navigation, Media, Phone settings and many more. The bottom centre screen controls features such as climate distribution, climate seats, massage seats, terrain response, driver settings and more. The digital doesn’t stop there! The steering wheel being one of Range Rovers innovations, with “Hiddenuntil-lit” touch sensitive switches on the steering wheel itself, eliminating multiple buttons needed on the multifunction steering wheel itself, again utilizsing maximum features in a limited space. HOW TO GET MORE FROM YOUR GARDEN By Veruska De Vita

68 | www.sandtonmagazine.com

W

ith a sense of renewal in the air, it is the perfect time to relook at your garden space. By tackling one or two new projects over a few weekends, you’ll soon be sipping your favourite drink surrounded by beautiful scenery filled with the sights, scents and sounds that emanate from lush greenery.

The latest garden trends Like fashion, gardens and exterior spaces experience different styles and trends and one of the biggest trends of the moment is adding ambient lighting to the garden. Glenice Ebedes of Grounded Landscaping says that this extends an entertainment area beyond the home interior, incorporating the outdoors to make it more usable and certainly more enticing at night. Adding a fire pit is another way of extending an entertainment area and provides the opportunity to be under the stars on cooler evenings. Another key trend is creating an ‘outdoor room’ or an intimate area in the garden that has its own theme and is separate from the rest – an area that is private, secluded and meditative. “This can be a permanently constructed zone or something more laid back. It all depends on your lifestyle and your home,” says Ebedes. Picture an area scattered with oversized cushions under the shade of a leafy tree or a zone spread with pebbles and stepping stones where you can literally slow down your pace. When it comes to flower beds, the first rule of thumb is to choose plants that will thrive in the environment. Consider positioning – is the area predominantly in shade for most of the day or will plants be exposed to full sun? Then select plants accordingly, while keeping maintenance in mind. According to Ebedes, perennials are winning favourability over annuals. “Perennials are plants that don’t die but that continue to thrive from one season to the next. Unlike annuals which are high maintenance and need to be replaced every season, perennials keep going and bring lovely seasonal colour,” she says.

A garden in springtime can connect us to the natural world in many ways. As the chill of winter gives way to balmy weather, evenings bundled up indoors turn into nights lounging on the patio.

Homeowners who love blooms should also look for perennials that flower for longer periods. Another way of bringing different hues into a garden is to mix flower beds by planting a variety of flowering perennials that come into bloom at different times. This ensures there are flowers across the four seasons. Shrubs such as the indigenous Anisodontea species flower abundantly for most of the year and thrive in most parts of South Africa. Bursts of colour can also be added through foliage. Crassula capitella ‘Campfire’ is an indigenous, low-growing succulent with leaves that turn from green to a brilliant red when exposed to the sun. It’s ideal for areas bathed in direct sunlight for most of the day.

If your garden is already in peak health and needs simple maintenance, here are a few tasks that will keep it glossy: • Enrich your soil with compost • Add mulch to beds and potted plants to prevent moisture loss

• Apply organic fertilizer • Replace invasive species with indigenous plants as this results in fewer pests and diseases in the garden. These plants also attract a lot of wildlife such as birds, butterflies and interesting insects.

Furniture and accessories Comfortable, functional and weather-hardy furniture is a key essential for making the most of your garden and exterior space. Texture is a strong element at the moment, especially natural wood, steel and a combination of the two. Linen and rope are also right on trend and add a touch of laid back pizazz. According to online magazine Decoist.com, outdoor furniture and accessories reflect a desire to create a holiday vibe at home. In terms of design, foliage prints and stripes are currently trending. Large black and white, navy and white and red and white stripes bring elegance and a nautical feel to a patio and can be incorporated easily for an updated look. Chair cushions, throws, umbrellas and floor rugs that are on trend can instantly bring a modern twist to your exterior. Loungers and couches remain popular outdoor choices. Extra seating should always be on hand and functional to accommodate family and friends and if pieces can be moved around so that people can spread out and sprawl, all the better. Items such as ottomans, beanbags and stools can be repositioned with ease and stowed away when not required. They also offer a creative opportunity for updating a patio with little fuss and without breaking the bank – they can be re-covered in bright fabrics or revamped with a lick of paint.
