MOM’S THE WORD If there was one person who believed I could become a writer, it was my mom. As a kid, my favourite school subject was speech and drama, from compiling oral speeches for English, to entering public speaking competitions and putting on my best British accent in school plays, my mom was my biggest supporter of them all. And since Mother’s Day is on the 13th May, it’s only fitting I celebrate her. My mom has taught me so many things, but above all, she has taught me to be kind, caring and considerate of others. She’s taught me that if I want to achieve something in life, I need to work hard to get it. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it hadn’t been for her and her faith in me. She is a formidable force; she is remarkable and she is one in a million. With all that said, Happy Mother’s Day, Mom! I love you to pieces. Our latest issue includes the hottest fashion trends, the best bars in the city for post-work drinks, and the coolest fishing spots the country has to offer. We also feature the highly talented chef, James Diack of Coobs fame and have included a money guide to teach your kids to start saving. Make sure to read up on all things hot and happening in the city and find out which new restaurants have opened their doors. We also chat to the gorgeous Reabetswe Sechoaro about her favourite spots in Joburg and interview fashion designer Ryan Keys.

HERMÉS ARCEAU

CAVALES Hermés has unveiled a new masterpiece entitled the Arceau. Designed in 1978 by Henri d’Origny, Arceau diverts the design of a classic watch and signals its difference by its asymmetrical lugs. The 36mm and 28mm-diameter models feature an inner bezel ring adorned with an unusual light gem-setting, while 70 or 60 diamonds light up a mother-of-pearl marquetry dial, reproducing the famous ‘Cavales’ equestrian motif. The new 28mm-diameter model also appears adorned in 56 diamonds, this time on its bezel. As sparkling as they are discreet, the Arceau Cavales showcase the skillful expertise of the in-house watchmaking artisans and express the unique Hermès vision of time. THE RISE OF RYAN KEYS The fashion designer has gone from strength to strength building his empire. He’s launched a capsule collection with actress Enhle Mbali and partnered with Dove.

R

yan Keys always knew he would be a designer from a young age. Growing up in Bryanston, Johannesburg, it was his love of photography that catapulted him into the fashion world. He even interned for a few fashion houses at the tender age of 14. He went on to further his fashion studies at the Spero Villioti Elite Design Academy, qualifying top of his class, and then attended the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New York City. Fast forward to today, Ryan Keys has established a successful name for himself within the industry. Having opened his first haute couture store, Keys Fashion in Parkhurst, in May 2014, Ryan has secured another prime position with his new based store in Hyde Park Corner Shopping Centre. His gorgeous dresses are the envy of many. So much so, they’ve been worn by politicians and famous A-list celebrities like Bonang Matheba, Minnie Dlamini and Khanyi Mbau. And who can blame them for choosing Ryan as their preferred stylist? When it comes to haute couture, Ryan’s passion is fueled by his desire to design exquisite, stylish and detailed garments. He sources the best materials and embroideries from all over the world in his quest to create masterpieces that are unique as well as timeless. “The Ryan Keys customer is a lady who knows who she is and is not afraid to stand out,” explains Ryan, adding, “She wants a beautiful garment made by exquisite fabrics and wants something tailored perfectly to her body.” Since last year, Ryan has launched his first ever men’s collection, showcasing an underwear, swimwear and gym wear collection at October’s SA Fashion Week, and describes his style of

menswear as ultra sports luxe. He has also collaborated with Black Coffee’s wife and actress Enhle Mbali on a capsule collection, adding that she is exactly the type of woman he always wanted to work with. “I met her just before her wedding through my publicist and she is an absolute dream. There aren’t many celebrities I can say are willing to bend over backwards for someone. Not many people know Enhle is a designer by trade. She has the vision, she’s sexy, she’s cute, she inspires me to work harder and I wanted to push the boundaries with her because of what an incredible woman she is.” Most recently, Ryan teamed up with Dove this past April during this year’s SAFW Spring/Summer ’18 and put Dove Invisible Dry to the ultimate test on haute couture worn by his models, as they got runway ready. The collaboration stressed the importance of using Dove Invisible Dry to ensure care was taken while handling the garments. Speaking about the alignment, Ryan says, “Dove wants to celebrate colour, colour that hasn’t faded due to sweat stains, and what better way than to do so than to create the first antiperspirant that is invisible on colour,” adding, “Whilst it provides 48-hour protection, it doesn’t leave any marks on clothes and contains all the goodness of Dove including its unique ¼ moisturing cream, to give you soft, smooth beautiful underarms, which is why I chose to partner with Dove for my latest collection.” So, what’s next on the agenda for Ryan? Apart from keeping himself busy, he still has dreams to open up a few more couture stores across South Africa and expand his brand abroad. But for now, Ryan continues to remain one of the top fashion designers in the country.

JUST JAMES James Diack’s name is synonymous with some of the best food in the country. Not only has he worked with other formidable cooks, but he is also chef and owner of four incredible eateries in Joburg Coobs, The National, Il Contadino and La Stalla.

G

rowing up on a farm, James was taught the basic skills by his mom, Janet, who always made sure there was something on the stove. But it wasn’t until he arrived at the Institute of Culinary Arts in Stellenbosch that he realised his place was in the kitchen. Since then he has found himself working under Bruce Robertson at The Showroom Café in Stellenbosch as well as pastry chef Nicolas van der Walt, who previously served as executive pastry chef at the Saxon Boutique Hotel. James is passionate about sustainability and provenance. In fact, almost every element of every dish comes from Brightside Farm – his family farm in Magaliesburg. And it was his food pilgrimage in Spain that led James to pursue a farm-to-table approach. When James is at home he usually cooks a risotto, but his ultimate pastime is to spend an entire day slow-braising something for family and friends. “I think it’s the art of completing a dish,” says James, adding, “At work, everyone works on a different element and I plate it, but at home, I can cook a whole dish from start to finish.”

WILD BOAR RAGU WITH PAPPARDELLE Serves: 8, Cooking Time: 3 hours

Method • Pour the flour and semolina onto a flat, clean surface and make a well in the middle of it. Crack the duck eggs into the centre of the well and slowly start combining with the flour and semolina into a stiff dough. Knead the dough until it is solid and smooth. Wrap in plastic and allow it to rest on the side. • Take your cleaned leeks, celery and carrots and finely chop them. Place the chopped vegetables in the pressure cooker to sweat off until almost cooked. Remove from the cooker and set aside. • Brown the wild boar in the cooker and add the tomatoes. • Add the vegetables and mix together. Deglaze with the red wine. Add the rosemary, basil and stock and then place the lid of the cooker on. • Cook at high pressure until the meat and stock cook into a thick stew.

To roll out the pasta: Cut off a piece of dough of about 100g (this is per portion). Dust in flour and slowly start to roll the piece through the pasta machine. Adjust the setting once at a time, rolling through and through each time. Keep rolling it through the pasta roller until the last setting – this will ensure it’s suitably thin. Place the rolled dough onto a clean, floured surface and cut the pappardelle into pieces about two-fingers’ width thick (make sure they are very well dusted in flour otherwise they will stick). Place the pappardelle in boiling salted water and cook until al dente.

Serving: Mix the pappardelle through the sauce and plate into warm bowl. Crumble with freshly shaved parmesan.

Kariega Game Reserve Eastern Cape This five-star, Big 5 private game reserve is, quite simply, breathtaking, and the fact that it incorporates two major rivers (the Kariega and the Bushmans) adds an enormous amount of beauty and value… and plenty of fishing opportunities, of course! Guests at any one of their five luxurious lodges can enjoy river fishing on either one of the two rivers, but the ideal choice would be to stay at either Settlers Drift – the luxury tented camp – or River Lodge, which is located right on the edge of the Bushmans River. Ideal fishing settings, game drives, spacious beautiful suites and idyllic surrounds are rounded off by your delicious dining experiences – all included in your stay. And should you decide a trip to the beach is on the cards, you can simply hop on a boat and head down the river, which also means that deep-sea fishing excursions are something you might want to investigate.

And with the new addition of The Old Rectory boutique hotel, there’s now no excuse to put Plett on your bucket list. Dating back to 1777, this stunning structure has been a school, a blacksmith shop and a rectory for the Anglican church over its 240 years. Today, it forms part of Rare Earth’s portfolio collection of beach, bush and country lodges, and, thanks to the restoration by Gabriel Fagan Architects and Dael Fairbairn of Erasmus Fairbairn Architects, takes on a Cape Dutch style – the most loved architectural style in the Western Cape. The Old Rectory has been expanded to include 18 luxuriously modern and comfortable suites, while the original building houses the reception area, the hotel’s exclusive fine-dining restaurant and the bar – all of which include the original yellowwood floors and trusses.

Each suite is stylishly decorated with colourful wall art and kitted with a Nespresso machine, underfloor heating, a gorgeous oversized Victorian bath, open shower and heavenly king-sized bed. THE KING OF ALL FRONT-WHEEL DRIVES

By Wesley Greybe

Honda South Africa has launched its newest Honda Civic Type-R and is leading the pack as the current most powerful front-wheel drive cars.

W

here do I start with the new Honda Civic Type-R? It is truly the marmite car of today. I agree, it’s not a car for everybody but it is one of the most brutal and most involved driving cars you can own today. The new Type-R has a 2.0 litre turbo VTEC engine pushing out 228kw and 400nm. Not the most power I know, but all that power is put through the front wheels only, making it the most powerful production front-wheel drive cars right now. Plus, it is only driven through a manual gearbox. Some driving enthusiasts love the fact that it only comes in a manual, yet the majority shunned the Type-R for having three pedals.

54 | www.sandtonmagazine.com

The Type-R is as hard-core as the badge suggests, offering stiffening dampers and very clever front suspension, to help minimise torque steer and a very clever differential that works with the suspension to get the car in the direction you want to go. Paired with an amazing chassis, the Honda Civic Type R set the new front-wheel drive lap record around the all familiar Nurburgring with a blistering 7:43.80 time back in April 2017. That is quicker than some of today’s modern sports cars like the Porsche Panamera Turbo, Ferrari F430, 997 Porsche Turbo, Nissan GTR R35 and the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4. In saying that, the Type-R has three driving modes now. Sport (default setting),

The engine will match the revs on downshift to keep the car balanced on entering corners. But for those who don’t want the feature and would rather hill and toe, you can deactivate the feature completely. GIVE YOUR KIDS A HEAD START By Chantalle Bell

Kids need to be taught about the value and appreciation of money from an early age - how to do this and when to do this is often the question‌

WHY KIDS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HOW TO WORK WITH MONEY It’s never too early to help your kids develop good financial habits and teach them to practice smart money management. Teaching children the fundamentals about earning and saving, and how to deal with money from an early age, will be extremely beneficial to them in the long run and is essential for their future financial success in adulthood.
