WORK SMART! We are officially half way through the year. We’ve been grafting hard for over 182 days already and any new year’s eve resolutions we set at the beginning of the year have either failed or come into full effect. It’s easy to get caught up in the chaos of it all. There’s something about knowing there are only six months left in the year that really knocks some people and causes everyone to go into overdrive. But as so many of us work odd hours now or seem required to be on call 24/7, it’s reassuring to know there are smart ways to still have a life. And it’s up to you to figure that out. For myself, finding time to exercise is key to staying sane when I’m busy, and of course spending quality time with the ones I love. It’s normal to go into panic mode, but it’s also okay to stop and have a breather every now and again, and just enjoy what’s left of this year. With that said, our latest issue is all about the finer things in life. We also have to give a special mention to the wonderfully talented, and humble Proverb, who absolutely nailed our photoshoot. It was a pleasure working with you! We also interview culinary Cape Town chef, Ash Heeger of ASH restaurant, feature the newest vintage-inspired watches on the market right now and discuss the new Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

VICTORINOX

LAUNCHES I.N.O.X Victorinox’s I.N.O.X Mechanical has finally landed in SA and gives Victorinox fans another reason to fall in love with the brand. Since launching in 2014, its mechanical version has been eagerly anticipated. This exceptional collection needed a robust calibre addition. Due to the delicate nature of automatic movements, several R&D were necessary to bring this model into life. At first sight, nothing distinguishes the quartz model from its mechanical version, with identical style, proportions and features, three hands and date. However, a transparent back case show the mechanism behind it. The guilloche dial, in the style of the Swiss Officer’s Knife is what makes the design stand out. I.N.O.X. signature bezel has been coated to make it even more resistant to wear and tear, keeping the shine intact for longer. Available at selected retailers in Johannesburg.

THE NEW VINTAGE

OF LUXURY TIMEPIECES Luxury watch brands are riding a vintage-inspired trend at the moment and have started introducing watches inspired by designs from their history. We investigate the latest designs by some of the most luxurious brands in the world.

The TAG Heuer Monaco 1969 Launched simultaneously in Geneva and New York on 3rd March 1969, the Heuer Monaco was the first square, waterresistant automatic chronograph watch in the history of Swiss watchmaking. Named by Jack Heuer following the Monaco Grand Prix, the watch represented a complete break from the aesthetic codes of traditional watchmaking, with its large square case, metallic blue dial, bright red minute hand, dome plastic crystal and, most notably, its crown positioned on the left which, at the time, meant the watch did not need winding. With its track debut in 1970, on the wrist of the Swiss driver Jo Siffert, the following year it shared the cinematic limelight with Steve McQueen, who insisted on wearing it during filming for Le Mans in 1971. Instantly recognisable and often copied, the McQueen Monaco has since become a much coveted watch on the auction and collectors’ circuit. The 2015 Monaco Calibre is a direct descendant of the 1969 original. The 39mm size, the crown on the left, the legendary petroleum blue dial with two white counters, the date window at 6 o’clock, the diamond-polished horizontal hour indices the inscribed vintage Heuer logo, the calibre 11 automatic chronograph with date and water-resistance to 100 metres – all the attributes of the Monaco. The threepart steel case is slightly more square on the 2015 version and closed with 4 screws, the two push-pieces at 2- and 4 o’clock are rectangular, the lugs a little larger, its calfskin strap perforated, the sapphire crystal and an open case-back, which reveals the gears of the calibre, are all features of the updated version.

Chopard Happy Sport To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the collection enriched the repertoire of its stylistic versatility with the strength of a self-winding movement: the 09.01 C calibre specially developed for 30mm feminine cases by Chopard Manufacture. Equipped with this movement, new interpretations are being introduced in 2018 with the Happy Sport Manufacture, featuring a dial combining the tender charm of textured mother-of-pearl with dainty pastel shades, as well as the Happy Sport Oval Automatic, which gives new life to the oval design of the Happy Sport in a revamped and incredibly contemporary version. This creation bears witness to Chopard’s ever more seamless integration of its two centres of excellence – the result of a unique combination of the myriad skills and expertise contributing to the grandeur of watchmaking and jewellery. The combined talents at the peak of their craft thus give rise to fresh Happy Sport interpretations, notably featuring the ancestral art of Urushi lacquer for the dials and Fleurisanne engraving for the movements.

La D de Dior Barely after being unveiled in 2003, La D de Dior was set to become a women’s loyal companion. Easy to live with, it colours everyday life with its ornamental stone dials in green or lavender jade, turquoise, lapis-lazuli, opal and white or pink mother-of-pearl. Designed in joyful contrasting or matching shades, its metal ribbon bracelets or lacquered leather straps display a very communicative happy mood. This year, La D de Dior Satine is adorned with a jewel bracelet made in Polish mesh. Inspired by a handcrafted metalwork technique, the interweaving of chased gold threads with polished ones creates a precious piece of passementerie as supple as a fabric. Decorated with a sun-brushed dial and bezel set with brilliant-cut diamonds, La D de Dior Satine Tressee embellishes the wrist with a hypnotic gold ribbon. Like one of the Maison’s meticulously lined garments, the reverse side of the bracelet reveals a dÊcor identical to the topside that intensifies the pleasure of wearing the material. For its seasonal edition, La Mini D de Dior is more gourmand than ever. Lacquered in orange or bright pink right up to its dial, it abandons its horns in order to sport a wraparound strap.

Hermes Arceau Chrono Titane

BVLGARI BVLGARI Lady

It was in 1978 that Henri d’Origny created the Arceau model: a round watch that he decided to associate with asymmetrical lugs featuring a shape inspired by stirrups along with a distinctive and singular font. Since then, interpreted through countless evolutions and variations, the line has been perpetually renewed while remaining true to its original spirit. Equipped with a chronograph function and a 41mm beadblasted titanium case, this sportier version radiates an appealingly light air. Its sloping numerals give the impression of having been blown in on a playful breeze. The three counters and the date are harmoniously arranged. Aesthetic characteristics inspired by saddlemaking are showcased on both models, fitted with a natural Barenia calfskin strap, or with a black embossed Barenia calfskin strap, on which the saddle stitching and inimitable feel testify to the tradition of leather-making excellence cultivated by the Maison.

A watchmaking and stylistic revolution at its launch in 1977, the Bvlgari Bvlgari watch has since become a reference model. A sign of recognition among elgant ladies of Italian high society in the late 1970s, it has since returned to the forefront on their daughters’ wrists. Its singularity lies as much in its style imbued with a timeless architecture recalling the columns of Ancient Rome as in its extremely current, lively appeal, making it both a fashion accessory and a contemporary design piece. It now comes in three sizes – 26-, 33- and 37mm in diameter – fitted with alligator leather straps in vivid colours inspired by the precious stones for which Bvlgari is renowned. Each strap is easily interchangeable thanks to the system available on the straps of this new collection, so as to match every style. The cases are available in steel, 18kt pink gold/steel and 18kt pink gold versions. Several dial colour variations, and a version with gemset bezel, round off the many possibilities of adorning the wearer’s day and the result is an exquisitely playful and joyful way of approaching feminine watching as only Bvlgari knows how.

THE FOOD RITUAL By Alex Dias & Jay Naude

When it comes to transforming your body, the secret is to keep things as simple as possible. People get overwhelmed by all the information on the Internet and this can cause more confusion and frustration.

T

hinking less and making fewer decisions, letting your environment do much of the work for you. If healthy and convenient foods are around you, you’re more likely to eat it. If you have a trusted system for making healthy food available, you don’t have to decide to eat well… you just show up and do it. This is where a food ritual is essential for success.

What is a food ritual? A food ritual is where you set aside some time to prepare healthy food in advance so that it’s readily available and convenient for when you need it.

See what challenges arise for the week, what the quietest times are and where you might need special preparation in advance. • Use a general menu for the next few days. This doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just a basic sense of what you might need for the week ahead. • Build a shopping list from this menu. Ash Heeger is one of the coolest chefs on the Cape Town block. Fearlessly female and sporting more tats than some blokes we know, this pint-sized chef is making waves and literally going from strength to strength. By Heather Hook

H

er restaurant ASH is currently (at the time of the interview) in the throes of being remodelled and renamed and the news should be hitting the streets soon about the new name and theme.

We caught up with Ash to find out a bit more about her, her passions, food and, of course…what’s the deal with all the tattoos…

Ash, tell us how you wound up in this industry, is it something you have always wanted to do, or was it a happy coincidence? Honestly, I’ve never even considered following another career path. I was, as I recall, the only one of my friends/peers that knew what I wanted to do from about the age of ten. Of course, when I was ten I had no idea what being a chef entailed, I just knew that it’s what I wanted to do with my life. That has never changed. I guess I just knew…

You have worked overseas as well as with some amazing local chefs too. How has this sculpted or moulded you in to who you are today? Each chef or mentor that I have worked with has impacted my life and career in some way. Whether it was moulding me into a young inspired cook, like Luke Dale-Roberts did, or taught me to preserve and step up my cooking skills and refine my palate like Brett Graham, or taught me to become a mentor and teacher myself like Ashley Palmer-Watts. I have been extremely lucky to learn from chefs who are at the top of their game and have been for some time.

All the ink! Tell us about some of your favourite tattoo’s and why they are so special to you. Oh gosh…I have so many now that picking a favourite is almost impossible! Honestly, it changes all the time. My two most special tattoos are probably of my dogs. One of them has sadly passed away and the other is still very much alive. Otherwise I suppose you could say I’m quite spontaneous and unsentimental about what I’ve put on my body. If I think it’s beautiful then I’ll probably get it tattooed.

Favourite dish on the menu and why? Something that ASH will always be remembered for is The Scrumpets. A little bit like a nugget. We take a less desired part of the animal, like head, tails neck and trotters, slow smoked them for hours on end and then pull the meat from the bones to form the nugget. We then cover the little guys in breadcrumbs and deep fry until golden. These are served with whatever Homemade Ketchup we are feeling at the moment.

If people were coming to eat with you for the first time – what could they expect? Well, interestingly enough, we’ve just closed our doors last

month and are reopening in spring with a completely new menu and service style. We’ve decided to do this because we want to constantly evolve and improve our offering and space. Guests can expect loads of innovation and playfulness in the menu without feeling challenged. Great service and a team that makes each guest feel right at home. But for now, it’s a surprise.

If you would have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be and why? Tough one! Most probably Anthony Bourdain. His recent passing has hit me quite hard. He inspired me with his writing and I based a lot of my early career off his ethos and outlook to the industry. I’d love to share a meal with him.

Bucket list travel destination and why? I’ve been lucky enough to travel a lot of the world. That’s the beauty of cooking. Places I have yet to visit, but absolutely must, are: Peru, Mexico, Hawaii and Japan. No specific order, of course!

What do you do on your day off, so where would we likely find you? You’ll either find me outdoors, running in the mountains or near the sea or you can find me in the kitchen! I really love cooking at home, which a lot of people find strange because it’s all I ever do. I love cooking for my loved ones and doing something different to what we serve at the restaurant. As for the running, I have to exercise to eat as much as I do! It’s a very good way to clear the mind and I also have a French Bulldog (Mash) and a Border Collie (Noodle) who need to have a decent run around every day.

What do you cook at home for yourself? Absolutely everything! When I get home at night it’s normally something easy and light. I like to make large amounts of chicken/ beef broth and then have containers handy in the freezer to whip out to make a quick noodle soup or pho. If I’ve had a particularly hard day at work then I just go ahead and treat myself to something guilty, like a grilled cheese sandwich…the kind that is fried in butter! On my day off I normally do something like a full roast with all the trimmings or some homemade pasta with an interesting sauce. An unpretentious but exceptional dining experience is on the cards all you foodies, where delightful meals from a novel menu will be presented with finesse, and ingredients will be locally, ethically and sustainably sourced – in keeping with Ash’s personal ideals of minimal-intervention food.

We will share more on her new restaurant soon on our social media accounts, as well as on our website: www.sandtonmagazine.com

TAU GAME LODGE

A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE‌ The city is busy. It hums and pulsates with an urgency that drives all Joburgers. We work hard, we stay up late, and we do whatever it takes to get to the end goal. By Heather hook

ut let’s be honest, everyone needs some peace and quiet, a bit of rest and an escape on occasion. A chance to switch off and recharge the batteries – yours and your phones!

We recently took a trip out to the picturesque Tau Game Lodge, located on the border of Botswana and within the wellknown Madikwe Game Reserve. Roughly a 4-hour drive from Johannesburg (barring any roadworks or slow trucks ahead of you) this is the ideal long weekend or even week-long stay spot, that caters perfectly for those thirsty for bush sunsets, chilled vibes, big game and minimal cell phone signal. There are no less than 27 major species of game that roam around the reserve and avid bird watchers will be delighted with the amazing array of birds that abound. Never a drive passed that we did not see several big game, and some of the experiences were so close that they literally took our breath away. We have visited numerous lodges and reserves over the years, but this from a game viewing perspective must be one of our favourites. Luxury abounds, and the lodge is beautifully decorated with African inspired décor and furnishings, right through from the reception to the dining areas and even the luxury thatched chalets. All chalets are equipped with both air-conditioning and ceiling fans and are spread out in a U-formation on either side of the lodge, offering amazing views of the wide variety of animal life approaching the waterhole during the day and early evening. Each chalet is also completely private and ensures privacy with its own viewing deck, en suite bathroom and even an open-air shower leading off the bathroom, which is a refreshing touch. If you are travelling as a family, then you are in luck – there are two Deluxe chalets that can accommodate parents and children wishing to share the same room, and the sliding doors allow for spectacular views of the breathtaking tranquillity from all sides. The outdoor bar area by the pool is also excellently located to overlook the watering hole, and during our visit we were lucky enough to spend almost 45 minutes watching a large troupe of elephants getting their fill, even the babies getting in on the fun, which was certainly something magical to experience from a mere 20 meters away, with a gin and tonic in hand. If you are about the spa – which we certainly are, then you will love to spend an hour, or three at this oasis - a peaceful sanctuary that reflects the soul of Africa with its natural surroundings that just keeps the bush experience theme constantly incorporated.

They offer a wide variety of treatments, all set to indulge your senses, and replenish and soothe body, mind and soul. The spa body treatments are specifically designed to detoxify the body, revitalise the skin and calm the mind. Perfect! After or between your treatments you can enjoy a refreshing beverage on the private spa deck, and enjoy the peace and quiet of the bushveld, punctuated only by the bird calls and the sounds of the bush. that about Tau. The staff are welcoming and friendly and made every effort to ensure that we were comfortable and having the most special and memorable time. Tau Game Lodge’s slogan, ‘It takes a pride to serve a King,’ is certainly evident in every aspect from arrival to departure, and we feel that this pride of amazing people is part of the reason that our stay was as magnificent as it was. Highly recommended, and we cannot wait to return very soon.

Days start early at Tau – we kicked off with a 06h30 safari drive which lasted about three hours and was followed immediately by a sumptuous breakfast buffet. Between breakfast and lunch, one can either visit the spa, enjoy some down time on the main deck or the private room decks, all overlooking the waterhole, head to one of the two swimming pools, or rest and unwind in your chalet. On one of the days we opted to do a guided bush walk with a few other guests and had some of the most amazing big game sightings on foot. Afternoon game drives depart at about 15h30 and see you returning to the lodge in time for dinner. Dinner is either served buffet style in the dining room, or on some evenings a Boma Braai dinner is the order of the day and this outdoor dining experience was a magical one. As the lodge accommodates only 65 people at maximum, your experience is intimate and gives the feeling of exclusivity and we loved

TRAVELLER TIPS: There are several toll roads on the N14, roughly R300 each way, so make sure to budget for that too. Sunscreen, socks and binocs – it gets cold and hot out there on one drive of 3 hours in length. EFFORTLESS EVERYWHERE:

THE ROLLS-ROYCE CULLINAN

The most anticipated car of 2018 and, quite possibly, the most anticipated Rolls-Royce of all time has just landed in SA.

amed after the largest diamond ever discovered which now resides in the British Crown jewels, the new Rolls-Royce Cullinan is an all-terrain highbodied car that makes the idea of authentic, luxury off-road travel a reality for the first time.

various lifestyles of its owners including the Viewing Suite and the Recreation Module. The 6.75 litre twin-turbo V12 Rolls-Royce engine delivers 563bhp/420kW and 850Nm/627lb ft of torque to the all-new all-wheel drive, allwheel steer system needed to overcome any challenge.

“The launch of a new Rolls-Royce model is always a seminal moment in the luxury industry. Today we are setting a new standard by creating a new class of motoring and motor car for customers who are well-connected, highly mobile and have a global perspective,” says Peter Schwarzenbauer, Chairman of Rolls-Royce, adding, “They want a new type of motor car that gives them unbounded access in ultimate luxury. Cullinan is that motor car.”

For the first time a Rolls-Royce has an opening tailgate, called ‘The Clasp’. In a nod to the era when luggage was mounted on the exterior of the motor-card, so the occupants did not travel with their belongings, the rear profile of Cullinan is a two-part, ‘D-Back’ format, with the bustle denoting the place of the luggage. ‘The Clasp’ opens and closes it its two sections automatically at the touch of the key fob button.

Contemporary and functional in its design, the Cullinan gains iconic status in the face of increasingly bland SUV designs. The first “three-box” car in the SUV-sector, Cullinan’s rear partition wall creates a distinct environment for passengers, separated from the luggage compartment. Tested to destruction all over the planet, the Cullinan is an incredibly capable offroader that sees the development of the ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ for off-road enjoyment, without sacrificing any Rolls-Royce on-road behaviour. The new Cullinan offers a suite of Bespoke features developed specifically for the many

The rear passenger compartment of Cullinan has been designed to offer the best seat in the house for the owner’s particular needs. Two rear configurations are offered – Lounge Seats or Individual Seats. The Lounge Seat configuration is the more functional of the two. With space for three passengers in the rear, it will likely be more attractive to families. The rear seats also fold down – a first for Rolls-Royce. The seats fold electronically in a number of configurations by pressing the appropriate button in the boot or rear door pocket. One press sees each backrest effortlessly fold down, whilst at the same time

moving the headrests upwards to avoid making an imprint on the seat cushion. Both seat backs can be folded completely, creating a flat load area or in a 2/3 and 1/3 split, increasing practicality even further. Rear passengers can still travel with a long load, or use the carpeted seat back as an occasional table on which to rest personal items. For those who intend to transport large items back from their adventures, the rear of Cullinan offers a large amount of space in different arrangements. The rear compartment or boot area offers a standard 560 litres of space, growing to 600 with the parcel shelf removed. Furthermore, the base of the rear seats sits higher than the boot floor, so even with both rear seats folded, the items in the boot cannot slip forward and are safely contained, unlike in any other SUV. The Individual Seat configuration is for those who value the ultimate luxury an SUV can offer over practicality. The two individual rear seats are separated by a Fixed Rear Centre Console incorporating a drinks cabinet with Rolls-Royce whisky glasses and decanter, Champagne flutes and refrigerator. The seats also move in a number of planes to offer ultimate comfort whilst travelling in the rear.

IN THE CITY WITH…

ROXY BURGER

The gorgeous TV Presenter and Celebrity Blogger shares her favourite spots around the city. Favourite restaurant I’m a sucker for GREAT sushi and dim sum, so my go-to would have to be Koi in Sandton. Since falling pregnant, I am craving a lot of salty and spicy foods, so soy sauce and wasabi are everything to me right now. I could drink the soy, haha.

Favourite coffee spot I recently had coffee and cake at Gabriella’s Tea Room in Parktown North (formerly The Pudding Shop) and it was decadent. Their food is delicious and their cakes are phenomenal too. I highly recommend their carrot and pineapple cake.

Favourite hotel I would have to say The Saxon hotel in Sandhurst. Their spa is incredible too. The atmosphere is fantastic and their therapists are world

class. The surroundings are just breathtaking and you really feel like you’re out of JHB.

Favourite nightclub or bar I’m far too old to go clubbing, but I’d say The Good Luck Bar on Fox Street in town is great for a bit of a vibe. Especially their ‘80s and ‘90s parties – too much fun. They have fantastic DJs and live acts. We also enjoy going to The Living Room in Maboneng Precinct for sundowners on Sundays. It has a fantastic atmosphere!

Favourite breakfast spot Pablo Eggscobar in Melville, by far! The best eggs ever. I find they have very unique dishes and their breakfasts are always different – not the usual eggs on toast! Plus, they serve Champagne, and who doesn’t love a glass of Champagne with breakfast?
