EDITORS LETTER

LET THE FESTIVITIES BEGIN

Advertising sales@sandtonmagazine.com

It’s officially that time of year again - the sun sets a little later, the end-of year functions are in full swing and everyone scrambles around for last-minute Christmas shopping. And as stressful as finalising deadlines and signing off on this year may be for some, it’s also an exciting time. Because, let’s be honest, there is nothing quite like the smell of the holidays to get everyone in good spirits. With that in mind, we bring you our second issue... all about travel. I was lucky enough to spend a night at the gorgeous Thornybush Game Lodge in Hoedspruit, (our cover) and had an unforgettable experience. So a huge thank you to Nicky Arthur PR for organising such a wonderful trip. For our travel issue, we have included a few of our favourite bush retreats within South Africa and bring you a list of countryside restaurants we think you should visit over the festive season (page 20). Read up on all the hottest events that took place recently, the new brands that have just launched and which restaurants are currently trending right now. We also chat to local celebrities about their love for the city and for those who have no idea what to get their friends and families this Christmas, don’t fret, because we have you covered. Just take a look at our Xmas gift guide (page 16 – 19) for some inspiration. All in all, we hope you enjoy our second issue and wish each and every one of you the very best over the festive season. We can’t wait to bring you more exciting issues next year.

Tell us a bit about your relationship with Joburg? I am a born and bred Joburger and adore this city I am lucky enough to call home. Joburg is one of the few places on earth that is vibrant and calming at the same time. My love for this city runs deep, not only because it’s where my roots are planted, but because it’s molded me into the woman I am today.

What inspired you to dedicate your career or build your career in a city like Joburg? I grew up in Joburg and loved it from a young age. I have always been passionate about fashion and Joburg is the sort of city where opportunity knocks on every door and inspiration can be found anywhere. It has its own style but allows you to create yours without judgement.

What is it about your passion and love for Joburg that you want other people to see?

I LOVE YOU JOBURG WITH

KEFILWE MABOTE The business woman, stylist & lifestyle influencer discusses her love for the city … PAGE 6

There is no limit to what you can achieve in a city like Joburg. It’s an entrepreneurial paradise for those with the inclination and ambition to follow their passions widely. It is the only city I have been to that celebrates small business like it does, and I love how locals support the small guys as much as they do support bigger retailers and corporates.

How do you describe the city when you meet foreigners? Anyone who visits Joburg will immediately notice how unique it is. I have built a business that offers bespoke styling and when I speak to visitors about it, they easily understand how important Joburg has been to me in creating my personal style. A style that has, in turn, created a business I am proud to call my own.

Every relationship has its ups and downs. What are yours with Joburg? The only down I can think of has little to do with Joburg itself and more to do with how big and beautiful the rest of the world is. There are times in the year when my clients travel overseas for work or holiday and it’s during those times that my styling business slows down. To make the most of this, I use the time to source items and research global and local trends. Downtime should never be dead-time.

P OPPI N G PROSECCO

This festive season is all about the bubbles and what better way to celebrate than with a bottle of Prosecco. We chatted to Director of Truman & Orange, Rowan Leibbrandt, about why the Italian sparkling wine is proving to be so popular.

PAGE 24

DRINKS*

Where does Prosecco originate from? The beautiful bubble has long standing ancient Roman roots and came from the former Prosecco village, a suburb of Trieste, Italy. It has now expanded the grape growing areas through the regions of Veneto and Fruili. The name ‘Prosecco’ is of Slovenian decent - pronounced Prošek. However, the traditional Prošek and the Prosecco we have come to know and love today, share no similarities. Prosecco has been traditionally made from the Glera grape but has developed and changed its taste throughout the years.

What is the difference between Champagne and Prosecco? Champagne, very well known by most, is a bubbly that comes from the Champagne region in France, while Prosecco the Veneto region in Italy. Although they have many differences, one similarity they do have is that they both take pride in their terrior – which is the environmental factors contributing to the growing of the grapes. The Glera or Prosecco grapes used in Prosecco differ to those of Champagne, and are native to the Veneto region of Italy. They are also made in different ways and have different taste profiles. Prosecco’s character is usually fruity, delicate and light whereas Champagne is usually more toasty and displays a biscuit profile. Prosecco has a profile that makes it suitable for everyday enjoyment.

Why do you think Prosecco is becoming increasingly popular amongst South Africans? South African’s tastes are increasingly sophisticated – and of course the opening of the country has meant that we’re much more influenced by what is happening in the rest of the world. South Africans’ choice of wine, in general, is of much higher quality than it was 20 years ago, and Prosecco is one of the fastest growing segments in the world at the moment – it’s the drink of choice when wine drinkers are looking for a delicate, refreshing bubbly. And being Italian doesn’t harm either!

What makes Mionetto Prosecco different to other Prosecco brands out there? Mionetto is a brand that has been around since 1887. In its 100 years, it has become the top selling Prosecco in the world, and what many consider to be the benchmark expression of an Italian Prosecco. It is also the most popular brand in Italy, and Italians are probably the best judges of the tastiest Prosecco!

What foods are best paired with Prosecco? Mionetto Prosecco’s balanced, fruit-driven character means it pairs well with light dishes. Italian foods go particularly well of course, and we’d recommend bruschetta, light pastas, focaccia bread or seafood.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SKIN OVER THE HOLIDAYS

The holiday season can take a toll on your skin. From the tanning and swimming, to the non-stop eating and late-night partying, our skins can do a little freaking out! And since we’ve all spent time and money getting our skin summer ready, we think it’s just as important to care for your skin during the holiday period too.

What I recommend:

IS Clinical- Warming Honey Cleanser

Biomedical Emporium- Facial Cleanser

Lamelle – Nourish Daily Cleanser

Vitamin C, Vitamin C is all I can say! Try as much as possible to add Vitamin C to your daily routine, either in a serum, added to your moisturizer or a skin spritzer. Also up your Vitamin C supplementation. Vitamin C/Ascorbic acid is an important antioxidant, UV protector and helps to stimulate collagen.

IS Clinical – Super Serum

What I recommend:

Keep your skin clean and moisturised. Never use soap on your face. Invest in a gentle pH balanced cleanser. Before going to bed, always cleanse your skin and remove all traces of make up, oil and sun block. During the hot summer months make sure to use a very hydrating, oil free moisturiser. For convenience you can use a moisturiser with an SPF during the day and a richer, renewal cream in the evening.

Dr Shrammek- Mela White Active C Serum

Stay hydrated. Drink lots of water. People are known to drink more alcohol during the holidays than any time of the year. Waking up the next day dehydrated can not only affect your body, but your skin as well.

Hayley Kirton, Senior Skincare Therapist from Lightsculpt Clinic in Rosebank lists some tips on how to keep your skin looking it’s best during the holiday season:

What I recommend:

Biomedical Emporium – Vitamin & Mineral Spritz/Collagen Serum/Skin Repair Serum

Lamelle- Corrective HA Serum

Rather Opt for a BB cream as opposed to Foundation. Let your skin breathe during the holidays

What I recommend: •

Dr Shrammek- BB cream

Heliocare Gel Colour cream with SPF

Sun protection. Ensure you use a proper medicated SPF or one with the CANSA stamp on. Make sure to re-apply every 3 hours at least.

What I recommend: •

Heliocare Advanced SPF

Biomedical Emporium- Translucent day SPF 30

IS Clinical- Extreme Protect SPF 30

Most importantly though, enjoy and relax. Allow your body, mind and skin to rejuvenate this holiday and festive season. PAGE 36

THORNYBUSH: A BUSH EXPERIENCE LIKE NO OTHER

here are game lodges, and then there are game lodges. Thornybush Game Lodge, part of the Thornybush Luxury Game Lodge Collection, is one of the few lodges that leaves guests begging for more. With their focus on attention to detail, the lodge epitomises style, elegance and luxury set in one of Southern Africa’s most untouched nature reserves. From the unrivalled game viewing opportunities on the morning and afternoon drives to the peaceful bath-time experiences overlooking the vast reserve, Thornybush Game Lodge has something for everyone. The 5-star retreat includes 20 luxury suites, each with their own private indoor/outdoor showers and viewing deck. The suites have all been designed with the highest-quality furnishings in mind. Think natural hues of white and beige and tones of grey for a more modern approach. The bathrooms are beautifully decorated and each feature an oversized bathtub, his and her basins and an open shower, along with marble tiled flooring and cement-style

walls that give off a smooth, satin, suede-like finish. Towards the main dining area is a large pool with sun loungers for those lazy summer days as well as a relaxing spa that includes 5-star treatments for men and women. Guests can enjoy the sweet sounds of nature as they indulge in sublime world-class cuisine at Thornybush Game Lodge. In fact, no matter the time of day, the amazing chefs will make sure guests are never short of food as they are always preparing fresh, homemade treats. Thornybush is also home to the best night skies in South Africa. With very little light pollution, many more elements of the Milky Way galaxy are visible at any part of the reserve. The Southern Cross, Southern Triangle, and the brightest stars of all, Sirius, Canopus and Alpha Centauri are all easy to spot even with the naked eye. What could be better than lounging in a bubble bath by candlelight with the night skies visible through the large windows? Or glancing up from your outdoor shower to see the brilliant display above? What sets Thornybush apart from other reserves is their

unwavering need to give back to the community. The Thornybush collection has been involved in local community projects for over a decade. In 2006, they established a community garden in the grounds of the Manyangana High School, which first saw the employment of four women from the community and now employs a total of nine women. They also established their second garden in 2010 to help feed the children at Hananani Primary School in Dixie. They have since grown thousands of different herbs and vegetables, which are often sold to local supermarkets in Hoedspruit and to nearby game lodges. As for the wildlife? Since Thornybush Nature Reserve dropped their boundary fence this year, between their reserve and the Timbavati Reserve, they have opened the corridor and given the animals freedom of movement. This move has proven to be favourable for the reserve, and for visitors, as Thornybush has received an influx of animals from the Greater Kruger National Park, most of which are there to stay. So if it’s a weekend escape that you’re after, Thornybush Game Lodge is certainly the perfect place to restore your soul.

INTRODUCING THE NEW

RANGE ROVER VELAR Car enthusiast, Wesley Greybe tested the new edition to the Range Rover family and believes it has the power to steal a few hearts.

I

s the Range Rover Velar the next evolution in Range Rover design? In fact, is it the next step in vehicle evolution? The concept was something of smooth lines and utter beauty. It is that car you would hang next to your poster girl on your bedroom wall. But as we know from the past, concept designs were intended to lure people in and create a want and need. After months of anticipation, dreaming of your Cinderella, the vehicle is eventually launched, and you land up with Cinderella’s step sister. This is not the case with the Range Rover Velar, you get your Cinderella, and ‘den sum’. Stylistically it is the one vehicle that has stayed true to its concept design, of which some features are industry first on the interior and exterior. On the exterior, the flush deployable door handles are a first, and have a purpose of contributing to the aerodynamics of the vehicle. Sleek stylish LED Headlights and tail lights are standard on the Velar (only one in its class) and offers optional Matrix LED and Matrix-Laser LED Headlights. LED Lights are slowly making their way into the industry as they have so many Benefits. One main benefit being up to 300 meters of visibility compared to that of Xenon which is 150 metres. Night driving is much clearer and using the closest natural colour to sunlight, helps with awareness

and overall fatigue of the driver. Some features you would enjoy, seeing as you spend most your time inside of the vehicle, the Range Rover Velar is riddled with technology and luxury. A big feature that would make kids go crazy is the “Touch Pro Duo” with two HD 10-inch touch screens in the centre consol. Utilizing the space and simplifying the design giving it that “Less is More” feel, and it works well. This car makes you feel as if you got hold of Tony Stark’s technology, with some practice you will navigate yourself around the vehicle with ease. The top centre screen controls functions such as, Navigation, Media, Phone settings and many more. The bottom centre screen controls features such as climate distribution, climate seats, massage seats, terrain response, driver settings and more. The Digital doesn’t stop there! Interactive driver display just finishes off the look having a full digital display behind the steering wheel. 12.3-inch screen with again many different features like Navigation, entertainment, information and more to help keep your eyes from leaving the direction of the road ahead. The steering wheel being one of Range Rovers innovations, with “Hiddenuntil-lit” touch sensitive switches on the steering wheel itself, eliminating multiple buttons needed on the multifunction steering

PAGE 48

MOTORING *

wheel itself, again utilizing maximum features in a limited space. Being part of the Range Rover family, we do expect the car to be comfortable with an option to get to work fast. So there are a few options of engines. Starting with the 2.0L Turbo diesel at 132kw and 430nm, all the way the V6 3.0L Supercharged Petrol engine with 280kw and 450nm. Below is a better break down of all the derivatives offered. All engines are driven through the ZF 8-Speed gearbox, which is known for its comfortable and quick gear changes. Many manufacturers have gone this route including the new BMW M5 being launched later this year. Off-road capability is a concern for many. Why would you take a car of this beauty off-road? Can this tackle off road terrain? All you need to know is “It’s a Land Rover!” It has full capability and has all the features you would want. “HDC” (Hill Decent Control) which limits the speed at which you decent at a touch of a button, using your brakes and ABS to moderate your speed and control without touching any pedals. The all new “ATPC” (All-Terrain Progress Control) which is essentially low speed off-road cruise control. Unlike cruise control, any wheel spin or ABS activation doesn’t disengage the system but instead adjusts the power to

each wheel to help regain traction. Basically, your novice off-road drivers now look professional and all they do is steer! The biggest competition of all off-roaders is of course the comparison of ground clearance. Always a competition to see who has the biggest… Ride height on the coil spring suspension is 213mm and wading depth of 600mm. If you opt for the air suspension you now have the option of the off-road height which is 251mm of ground clearance and 650mm wade depth. A nice feature of the air suspension is the access height option which drops the car by 40mm below normal ride height for easy entrance in those tight garages, easy access to your boot or just for a photo opportunity. The air suspension also softens the ride for everyday use if that’s your biggest need. A lot of people will just say it’s a Range Rover F-Pace Jaguar. And you would be right. Same as an Audi A3 is a VW Golf…. The Velar does share the platform with the F-Pace. It does have an aluminium chassis and similar engine derivatives as the Jaguar. Is that a bad thing? It takes everything Jaguar offers and creates a Range Rover feel. Still a very practical comfortable SUV and will steal a lot of peoples’ hearts.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE SUBURBS

IN GAUTENG REVEALED

According to Lightstone’s latest newsletter the most expensive suburbs in Gauteng are, with the exception of Blair Atholl, all located in Sandton. Tanya Van Buuren, from Seeff explains… Lightstone lists Blair Atholl as the most expensive suburb with an average house price of R11.2 million, followed by Westcliff (R10.5 million), Dunkeld (R9.3 million), Sandhurst (R9.1 million) and Inanda (R7.2 million). Charles Vining, Seeff’s MD in Sandton, says although Blair Atholl is not technically part of their license area they do sell property here. “This exclusive estate is home to the successful elite, situated conveniently nearby Lanseria airport, and the convenience of private hangars. Positioned beyond the hustle and bustle, Blair Atholl offers country-living with maximum security on a magnificent golf estate”. Vining continues that Westcliff is a leafy suburb with a rich history reflected in its architecture and homes here have views over the greenbelt area that is the Johannesburg zoo. “Many of the stately homes in Westcliff have impressive gardens shaded by Jacaranda trees”. Vining says although Dunkeld is at the same time in the heart of Sandton, it is also tucked away in well-established avenues as the quiet neighbour of Hyde Park and Rosebank. “Sandhurst is arguably the most prestigious suburb in Sandton, where the most super-homes in Johannesburg are found. Home

sales in Sandhurst have been as high as R80 million in recent history and many international businessmen and women looking for a Johannesburg base, invest in Sandhurst. Coronation Road in Sandhurst is also highlighted as the most expensive street in Gauteng at an average value of R 26.8 million per house”. Inanda is home of the elite Inanda Polo Club and the impressive functions and events hosted here. Properties here are mansions set on sprawling lawns and many of Johannesburg’s who’s-who call Inanda home”. Vining adds that even though Hyde Park is not featured on Lightstone’s list, having an address here is a hallmark of success. “Properties of all types and styles are to be found in Hyde Park and the suburb has held its value well over the years. Investors who’ve owned property here for the medium term have experienced good returns when on-selling because Hyde Park is always in demand”. Lightstone also lists 4th road in Hyde Park with an average value of R16.9 million per home, 1st road in Dunkeld West (R16,6 million per home), Woolston road in Westcliff (R13.7 million), 9th Street in Houghton estate (average value of R13.2 million) and The Stables Close (R13 million) as the most expensive streets in Gauteng following Coronation road.

This 3069m² river-facing home in Blair Atholl Golf Estate is listed for R19 million and has four bedrooms, four bathrooms, four garages and six parkings. Favourite restaurant My favourite restaurant is Bellgables Country Restaurant in Muldersdrift and just makes you feel like you are in another time, in another place, because you are just surrounded by antiques. The menu is diverse providing something for everyone’s taste and the service has always been impeccable. So if ornate, old-world decadence is appealing, I highly recommend it.

Favourite coffee spot My favourite is 4th Avenue Coffee Roasters in Parkhurst. This really is boutique as far as Joburg goes. The shop itself is tiny, but full of character, which is what I love about it. Most of the tables are outside and I think it is exactly this sidewalk culture that appeals to me in a coffee spot. They have their own blend, which is called Legendary Pink, or if you’re like me, hyper sensitive to caffeine, but still love the taste of coffee, their decaf is really good too.

Favourite hotel This one is a tough call for me. I absolutely adore the Palazzo at Monte Casino for their garden. But I definitely gravitate more towards boutique hotels like The Munro or The Residence. I much prefer the smaller personalised touches that boutique hotels offer and the view from the Munro is unparalleled.

Favourite nightclub or bar

IN THE CITY WITH…

Still one of my absolute favourite venues in Johannesburg is Randlords. Sadly it isn’t open to the public all the time. They have signature cocktails, the wine list is on point and their tapas are delicious. I just have a weakness for rooftop venues and breathtaking views and this combines both beautifully.

DEBORAH LETTNER

My current favourite is Glenda’s in Hyde Park. Besides the gorgeous decor, not to mention the display of pastries, they have ample space inside and outside. I love the fact that they offer seasonal menus and have planted herbs everywhere, which are actually used in their dishes. Unique menu items like grapefruit Carpaccio and coconut chia granola are the reasons I keep going back.

The stunning actress and producer shares her favourite spots around the city. PAGE 54
