Kate Bradbury, award-winning author and journalist specialising in wildlife gardening, will be heading a panel with Jerry Kinsley, senior lecturer in Wildlife and Conservation at Easton College and chaired by Nick Acheson, of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust and Trustee of the Felbeck Trust

This evening will offer the opportunity to learn how to make a garden “wildlife friendly” Questions can be submitted in person when purchasing a ticket, or on the website cromergreenspaces.wordpress.com/events/

Wildlife Gardener ’s Question Time Friday 24th March, Cromer Community Hall, Garden Street 7-9pm Doors open at 6pm Tickets

£10 include refreshments, available from Constance & Thyme, Garden Street, Cromer.

Cromer & Sheringham Probus Club

On Tuesday 7 February, after a tasty lunch, the award-winning publisher Peter Stibbons gave a talk on aspects of Cromer ’s history He first took us back 8,000 years ago, when Doggerland, an area of land that connected Britain to continental Europe and containing large areas of Norfolk, was devastated by a great tsunami and submerged beneath the North Sea, causing Cromer to become a coastal area

Next, Peter told us about the discovery of 600,000-year-old mammoth bones at the base of the cliffs in the Cromer Forest Bed at West Runton in 1990, which led to a full-scale excavation in 1995 We then experienced a huge jump in time as Peter explained that the name ‘Cromer ’ does not appear until the thirteenth century, the area having previously been known as ‘Shipden’.

Cromer became a seaside resort in the early 1800s, some of the wealthy Norwich banking families making it their summer home The great storm of 1836 prompted the decision to build the first promenade in the 1840s The old jetty was washed away three times in the 1800s, eventually replaced by the late-Victorian pier we enjoy today The railway did not arrive until 1877 Much of Cromer Church today is essentially a Victorian reconstruction Peter displayed many pictures of Cromer, showing how the town had changed through the years.

On behalf of the 27 members present, our Chairman, John Rattle, thanked Peter for his fascinating talk. On 4 April Paul Rundle will speak to us about “Hitler ’s Spies in the UK” and on 2 May Wally Webb’s talk will be entitled “On the Radio” More information about the club can be seen on our website at www candsprobus club or you can call Dave Vickery on 01263 824306

A Ray of Hope for Earthquake Victims

Sheringham photographer, Chris Taylor, captured the freezing mist of dawn rolling off the land at Cromer which has proved to be a big hit online

Following enquiries to purchase prints Chris has decided to donate 50% of any sales of the print to the Red Cross Turkey-Syria

Earthquake appeal

The image was taken using a drone, at the maximum 120m altitude at around 7:30am on Valentine’s Day, as the sun rose and the icy cold mist rolled off the land, obscuring much of Cromer apart from the pier & the church tower Since it was Valentine’s Day it seems appropriate that the image should be used to spread some love and help those suffering the devastating effects of the earthquake in Turkey

"I had been up since 3am, unable to sleep, so after getting some work done, at around 6am (still dark and 2°C outside, I decided to take the drone over to Cromer for sunrise to see what I could get I hadn’t expected the rolling fog and from ground level the visibility was very poor but up in the air the drone captured a different view, one which has captured people’s imagination online with some lovely comments and requests for prints "

Prints start at £20 for a 12 x 8-inch print and are proving popular The prints can be ordered by heading to my blog at www.christaylorphoto.co.uk/blog

(I’m offering Cromer & Sheringham residents a postage refund if they wanted to collect the prints from me in Sheringham)

Since we published the last magazine, we have two particularly thought-provoking events in t

It is a year on from the invasion of Ukraine an ongoing plight of its people suffering relentles attacks, displacement and hardship Then on 6

It has now been two years since I began working at Age Concern North Norfolk and one of the goals set for me by the trustees was to increase our profile in North Norfolk through expanding our range of networks

I am pleased to say that the services that we offer in our day centre and our meal delivery scheme have become our success story to the extent that we are preparing up to 40 meals per day and we have around 50 people attending sessions across the four days that we are open Two special events have been held at The Lighthouse recently – the Dementia Engagement Day and ‘Sheringham Helps’ which brought the community and general public in to find out about all the support that is on offer in this area We had a stand displaying all our activities which included the Magic Interactive Table and our robotic cat Tabitha (who I could have sold several times over!) While I can acknowledge that the vast majority of organisations represented at these events was well aware of Age Concern North Norfolk, there are still people who do not know what we do or think we are an advice organisation like AgeUK

I will continue to write these articles, which go into every household in North Norfolk, as they keep people informed far better than I can ever do on my own

In spite of our own problems here, many people feel they need to do something to help The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) is an organization that accepts donations to provide an urgent response to crises around the world, including Ukraine, Turkey, Syria and Pakistan among others Sheringham Shantymen will be giving a concert on Saturday 11th March at St Peter ’ s Church, Sheringham and giving the proceeds to DEC Turkey – Syria Earthquake Appeal Of course, you can donate directly to the DEC website: dec org uk or to the other familiar organizations such as Unicef, Red Cross, Save the Children and many others Do please make sure that your donations are not going to scammers by donating to official websites

Wherry Charity Launches 2023 Programme of Norfolk Broads Sailings

Bookings are now being taken to sail on the Norfolk Broads this summer in a traditional Edwardian passenger wherry. Only eight of these elegant vessels are still in existence - five of which have been restored and are maintained and operated by the Wherry Yacht Charter Charitable Trust

Income generated from their just-published programme of scheduled sailings and bespoke charters helps preserve the historic wherries for the future while allowing current generations to enjoy the unique experience of sailing in them

Day trips are available on various dates between May 5th and September 30th, setting off from a number of Broadland locations including Wroxham, Stalham, Ludham, How Hill and Dilham Some sailings stop at local nature reserves and tourist attractions while others include lunch or supper

In addition to the scheduled trips, up to 12 people can charter a wherry for the day or a longer period of time for a family gathering, special occasion or event - with refreshments provided if required Each wherry has a fully trained skipper and crew who are all volunteer members of Wherry Yacht Charter

Behind the scenes more volunteers help maintain the wherries, take part in fundraising activities and undertake administrative roles

To view the 2023 sailing programme, make a booking or to find out more about Wherry Yacht Charter and how to become a volunteer or Friend of the charity log on to www wherryyachtcharter org

Overstrand Gardening Club

Tuesday 7th February saw the first club meeting of 2023 and we welcomed 41 returning and 7 new members and 2 visitors. Our speaker this month was Mr Richard Clark from Panache Plant Nurseries with an informative and entertaining talk on “Hardy Salvias”

He explained that these non-fussy plants were both easy to grow and to propagate from cuttings They thrive in sunny spots and flower best on poorer soil Many originate from Mexico where they naturally grow in scrubby desert, but they are quite hardy over our average UK winters, if left unpruned till late spring, when they can be given a light trim

They range through the colour spectrum both as pastel and bright shades that zing out in the sunshine; their foliage too varies from silvers, through a range of greens and some bronzes. They have a long flowering period covering 10 months of the year and the simple flowers are a big attraction for pollenating bees and moths

Our next meeting on Tues 7th March is at the earlier time of 2pm starting with the AGM then followed at 2 30pm with a seed sowing workshop, at The Parish Hall Overstrand

For further information please contact Yvonne (Secretary) on email overstrandgardeningclub@gmail.com

A walkover for just knowing the moves! Actually, I wonder if this would be the record length for a published orthodox problem with all moves forced on both sides

The length (12 moves!) of No. 312 might put off at first sight, but in fact it is so easy that I need not trouble solvers to send solutions this time either It does not even conform to the usual convention that a good problem should never start with a check I leave readers to enjoy the spectacle of the black K being “kicked upstairs”

Non surgical and minimally invasive options for treatment of varicose veins

Endovenous laser therapy is a quick, minimally invasive alternative to traditional vein stripping Endovenous laser therapy using painless laser is a relatively new outpatient treatment that can be performed under local anaesthesia in less than an hour

Varicose veins occur when the vein is not functioning properly to return blood from the lower leg to the heart Each vein has a series of valves that open to allow the flow of blood to the heart, and close to prevent backflow (otherwise known as “reflux”) of blood back into the foot. The walls and valves of veins are thin and elastic, and can stretch due to a variety of conditions including pregnancy, heredity injuries, inflammation and age

Approximately half of the population has some form of venous disease, and varicose veins affect about one out of two people age 50 and older, and 15-25% of all adults.

Previously, treatment of painful, swollen varicose veins required a surgical procedure called vein stripping, where the vein was completely removed from the leg More recently, endovenous laser therapy has been developed Bulging varicose veins in the lower leg are usually caused by a faulty valve located higher in the leg: that can’t be seen at the surface The endovenous laser therapy treats the source of the problem, which then causes the varicose vein in the lower leg to shrink and disappear Laser energy heats the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut Patients experience minimal discomfort, and they can return to normal activities the same day

Because there are many veins in the leg, the blood that would have flowed through the closed vein simply flows through other healthy veins after the laser therapy

Coltishall Clinic also offers minimally invasive and non-invasive sclerotherapy and lasers to treat varicose and spider veins

The Museum of the Broads opens for 2023!

We can’t wait to welcome visitors again from Thursday 30 March.

Our special exhibition is on Broadland artist, Philippa Miller During her long life, Miss Miller was inspired by the Broads to paint and sketch, to make films, to research village signs and to create miniatures

The exhibition shows her personal response to the landscape she knew and loved and is complemented by her own words from the diaries and journals she left behind Miss Miller is also known for her sketches of the bomb damage done to Norwich during the Second World War, but it is her depictions of the Broads that are her true legacy Don’t miss this tribute to a true artist of the Broads Discover how a marshman’s family lived, see inside a holiday bungalow, and find out more about cobblers and sail makers Other displays have changed too, there are new family activities, and our old favourites, our trip boats, will be running again too

We welcome groups, are introducing new combined Museum and boat tickets, and all 12s and under come to the Museum for free So, what are you waiting for?

We look forward to welcoming you to our historic and unique setting by the river!

Worstead Festival

The Worstead Festival raised more than £25,000 for local good causes last year

Well over 10,000 people took the opportunity to have fun over the two days of the event, billed as Norfolk’s Greatest Day Out for All the Family

“After the previous two years it was so good to see so many people attend the festival again," said the Chair of the Trustees, Jane Bond “Seeing so many families enjoying a day out together gave me the most pleasure, we can’t wait to do it all again ”

The headline attraction on the 29th and 30th of July this year will be the equestrian stunt rider, Guido Louis He’s returned to the UK from a successful run of performances in Las Vegas He promises a thrilling spectacle of fast paced riding on his three beautiful horses, with and without saddles

The show-ring will also feature the return of The Starting Handle Club 50 years after the amazing array of vintage tractors first appeared at the

29th & 30th July

festival. There will be a spaniel display and a chance to show and race your own pet dogs

Elsewhere Derek Spanton‘s heavy horses give a glimpse of how farming used to be

Power to Ukraine

Duncan Baker and a Team of Constituents Deliver 112 Generators to Ukraine

On Sunday 12th February 2023, a team of six North Norfolk residents and Duncan Baker MP, in three transit vans, set off on the 2,000mile journey to Ukraine to deliver 112 generators and other aid, to those suffering in the war.

Just before Christmas, Putin began bombing civilian targets and energy infrastructures causing blackouts in homes across Ukraine and leaving many without light, heat and power. This spurred the team to begin raising funds in order to provide generators

The people of North Norfolk and from wider Norfolk responded phenomenally and raised £18,500 in online donations Some people chose to donate their unused generators, and some bought generators to specifically donate

to the cause It was an incredible outcome and one that is greatly appreciated

Once in Lviv, in Western Ukraine, the group met up with the military aid organisation run by Svitlana Legka that was suggested by Anna Kolomiichuck, the Ukrainian lady that Duncan Baker MP has hosted and supported since the beginning of the war They explained that the generators would be going to schools, orphanages, hospitals and other vulnerable people who are the in the worst hit areas of Ukraine.

Whilst staying in Lviv overnight, the air raid siren was activated, and many hotel guests were moved to the basement for cover. The following morning it was confirmed that energy infrastructure just outside of the city was hit Upon their return journey, Duncan Baker took a lady, her 10-year-old daughter, and their pet Marty, the French Bulldog back to England in his van, to provide them safe passage whist

fleeing the country after their home was destroyed. They are now being hosted by a family in Guildford

The team of 7 included Duncan Baker MP, Rob Scammell, Paul East, Jayne Morton, Michelle Foulkes, Leon Calder and Anna Kolomiichuck They returned home safely but exhausted on Saturday 18th February

Duncan Baker and the team wish to express their thanks “We cannot thank our constituents enough for their generosity in helping us take aid to Ukraine It was a long and tiring journey, but the chance to support and help those in desperate need once again puts North Norfolk on the map Thank you to everyone who made a donation, we could not have done this without you ”

Duncan Baker MP, Member of Parliament for North Norfolk

As ever it has been a busy month focusing on community work around North Norfolk Herewith are a number of highlights of what I’ve been up to around the area

Victory Homes

The state of our social housing has been brought to my attention and I have been concerned about the number of damp and mould cases brought to me I have a meeting with the Chief Executive of Victory Housing and will be taking forward my overall concerns, including the numbers of homes being sold off If you are having issues with outstanding repairs or mould and damp, please do get in touch with my office so we can help you

North Walsham Jobs Fair

In early January I worked with the North Walsham DWP office to help local people try and find a new job opportunity We held a jobs fair on the 13th January in North Walsham Community Centre This saw 25 businesses and job providers talk to over 200 people

A resounding success!

More Mental Health Funding

I was very happy with the further investment announced for mental health funding across the country, with Norfolk and Waveney due to directly benefit from the money. This is an area that I've campaigned on tirelessly, to ensure our services receive the investment they need

I was incredibly proud when I managed to persuade the local NHS to support mental health clinics at Cromer hospital, offering much-needed care to people in North Norfolk

Clifton Park - Cromer

I'm sure many were considerably concerned when the news broke about the land clearance at Clifton Park in Cromer. An area which presumably was home to many species of animals and plants and cleared, as I understand completely without professionals first assessing the site I was quick to act on this, writing almost immediately to North Norfolk District Council, The Norfolk Wildlife Trust, and the Environment Agency My letter has been seen by the Chair of Natural England and the case is being looked into further

We missed out on Levelling Up Money

I am very disappointed that NNDC have lost out on four consecutive Levelling Up and Community Renewal Fund bids I have written to the council expressing my views and want us to plan now, to find ambitious and imaginative projects that will win government approval I had wanted the important Holway Road/A149

roundabout to be included in the bid which would improve safety on one of our main roads and ease summer congestion I have subsequently met with the road’s Minister to take this forward

If you have problems that I can take up for you, please do not hesitate to contact my office at duncan@duncanbaker org uk

age UK

Did you know that there are estimated to be 38,000 lonely older people in Norfolk and loneliness can be just as harmful to your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day? In Norfolk County Council’s ‘Joint Strategic Needs Assessment’ report, figures show that North Norfolk has one of the higher percentages of lonely older people across the county

Age UK Norfolk has been working hard for 15 years to combat loneliness across Norfolk, having launched our Befriending service in 2007 The service makes friendly, weekly phone calls to older people in need of somebody to chat to. For many, we are the only person they speak to all week

We currently befriend 294 older people, making over 15,200 calls a year - that’s over 7,600 hours of befriending! Our service grew by 70% since the outset of the pandemic and shows no signs of slowing down; we urgently need volunteers who enjoy chatting to people to join our friendly team and help us be there for those who need us

Volunteering as a befriender is very flexible, you only need 30 minutes spare a week and can make calls from the comfort of your own home The calls that we make to older people are very highly valued and can make a real difference to the life of somebody experiencing loneliness, but our volunteers reap the benefits too!

Hilary, who lives in North Norfolk, volunteers for our Befriending service and supports three members “I have benefited from speaking and making friends with my befriending members and they also enjoy our very different conversations!

“I would recommend volunteering; none of the ladies I phone have any form of computer access (nor do they want it!) so they benefit from knowing that someone is thinking of them and contacting them on a regular basis ”

To find out more about volunteering as a Befriender, you can visit our website: www.ageuknorfolk.org.uk, contact our Volunteer Co-Ordinator on 01603 785 210 / volunteering@ageuknorfolk org uk or scan the QR code with your smartphone

Buying a Property with Cash

If you’re searching for a new home, you may have come across the term ‘cash buyers only ’ In these cases, the agent is looking to sell to someone who does not need to borrow money and can proceed quickly

There can be distinct advantages to being a cash buyer, or selling to one, however, it is important to be clear on what this actually means

What is a cash buyer?

A cash buyer is someone who can finance their purchase without a mortgage or selling another property They must have enough money available to buy the property at the time they make the offer Having proof of your funds to hand will boost your credibility and help speed up the process

If you are selling your home, your estate agent should confirm how the proposed buyer will pay for it Ask yours how they will verify a buyer ’s status

What are the advantages of being a cash buyer?

Cash buyers can proceed more quickly because they do not have to wait for a mortgage or for their own sale to complete. As a cash buyer, you may be able to negotiate a lower price or negotiate other benefits

Cash buyers will also find it easier to buy at auction or buy properties considered unmortgageable, for example, ones of non-standard construction or which have structural or title problems

Keeping you and your investment safe

All sellers and buyers must provide proof of their identity and address to comply with anti-money laundering regulations The requirements will depend upon your solicitor and whether you are meeting them face-toface You should have your current passport or photocard driving licence and a recent council tax or utility bill available as this will help avoid delay

As a purchaser you will need to show the source of your funds not only to the agents but also your solicitor who will need to confirm your funds are from a legitimate source This is to comply with legislation aimed at reducing criminal activity For example, if you are funding your purchase from savings, they will ask to see bank statements showing regular payments into your account and your savings building up

Due diligence

Cash buyers should be wary of any pressure

to complete before they are ready Be cautious about dispensing with any of the recommended searches or investigations into title. Your solicitor can advise you of the risks involved and if necessary, ways of mitigating this, for example by taking out indemnity insurance

Be wary of so-called buy any property companies, which regularly advertise on the internet or in local media While some are genuine, others are only middlemen for third party investors Others may use dubious tactics such as making an initial high offer then reducing it before the sale goes through

Top Tips with Toll Barn Vets - Exotic Birds Housing

If you keep or are thinking of keeping birds at home you might find the following advice useful.

Most species of bird benefit from a large aviary, providing shelter from in summer as well as heating protection from poor weather conditions in winter, an indoor cage with access to an outdoor aviary can provide the best of both worlds

If you plan on taming your pet bird and keeping them in an indoor cage, at a minimum, your bird needs to be able to fully extend its wings in all directions, but the bigger the cage the better in most respects If housed indoors birds should, where possible, be allowed out of their cage to fly and exercise around the house but always under supervision

It’s not only great for their muscles but also great for their brains, providing much mental stimulation but a word of caution, also make sure house is secure, checking all doors and windows are closed before allowing your bird the freedom to explore

● Make sure all cage ornaments/toys are bird safe and zinc/lead free Having a selection so that you can change and rotate them can prevent boredom by adding some variation Changing the cage lay out and varying perch options can also help keep them occupied and puzzle feeders can be a fun addition, either homemade or purchased

Access to natural light and/or plementary UV from a bird lamp ve the cage is essential for vitamin/ eral uptake UV bulbs should be changed y 6-12months as they come less effective with time

● Birds should have access to natural bird-safe wood for chewing and perches should be non-abrasive and vary in width to allow for comfortable foot grips to be selected and help prevent the development of pododermatitis

● Birds should have access to fresh water at all times

● Birds should be housed in appropriate groups; there are species that are solitary but some smaller species are gregarious and appreciate being house in pairs or groups

Jaymic Systems Ltd MOTs

if the space is available.

● Their daylight hours should be consistent (between 8-12 hours daily) with an indoor cage covered to prevent our light cycles affecting them in the evening This reduces stress and can reduce unwanted mating or plucking behaviours

● Indoor cages should be positioned in areas that are well ventilated but not in draughty areas and always positioned away from aerial pollutants such as smoking and cooking (Teflon pans can release toxins when in use that harm a birds tender respiratory system)

● As already mentioned, birds have sensitive respiratory systems and can suffer from pollutants, keeping an air purifier nearby can help with this

● Cages should be cleaned weekly or more frequently if needed with an appropriate disinfectant such as F10 This reduces bacterial and faecal contamination and keeps the air rd and its sensitive lungs e

Did you know birds can be ringed or microchipped to help identify them if they stray Talk to your vet about options for your pet.

Perfect Pie

Something

flavour intensifies and sweetens, turning a boring veg into something sublime Squashes are notorious for being bland but roast them up and it’s a whole other story Many people consider vegetables to be a side dish but cooked in the right way they become the star of the show and bought seasonally they are a very economical option. I've included fennel here, but don’t worry if you can’t get it, the recipe works fine without it, but it can now be purchased in most supermarkets very reasonably I know some purists don’t like using Bisto, but personally

I like to keep it handy as it’s great for gravy and this sort of dish You can add a splash of white wine to the sauce if you want to jazz it up a little, but for a regular, family friendly dish I’ve left it out Most ready-made pastry is vegan, so if you use Alpro soya cream you can happily feed this to vegans, and the flavour is just as good.

Roasted Celeriac and Butternut Squash Pie

Serves 4

1 large butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and cut into chunks

1 celeriac, peeled and cut into chunks

Olive oil

1 onion, finely diced

1 leek, cut into half rounds

4 sticks celery, finely chopped

1 bulb fennel, finely chopped

1 punnet of chestnut mushrooms, quartered

2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped

Generous tsp dried thyme

A little Bisto or cornflour

Editor ’s Recipe

With Easter coming up, I thought this month I would give you a recipe that uses up leftovers but has a feeling of indulgence at the same time. If you have made hot cross buns and have some left over these are perfect for this, which is a variation on bread-and-butter pudding No leftovers? I cheat and buy a pack of buns from the supermarket which will do just as well. Add in some eggs (not the Easter variety!) milk and a little cream and you are nearly done This pudding will easily serve 6 people

Hot Cross Bun Pudding

You will need a deep round baking dish approx 25cm wide

Ingredients

200ml double cream

3 eggs

Small carton cream (or soya cream if vegan)

1 sheet ready rolled puff pastry

Start by tossing your squash and celeriac cubes in a little olive oil, season and roast for around 30 minutes on 190° until starting to brown and cooked through Meanwhile, gently fry the onion, leek, celery and fennel in a little olive oil for 10 mins until softening, then add in the mushrooms and garlic Season with salt and pepper and the dried thyme and cook gently for a further 5 minutes Add in a little boiling water to form a sauce, and thicken with either a little Bisto or cornflour, and stir to combine it all Pour in some cream and check your seasoning Once the roasted veg are ready, add them in and gently stir to combine, then pour it all into an ovenproof dish Unroll the pastry and use it to top the pie, sealing the edges well, and make a slit in the middle Brush with a little milk, and pop back into the oven for approximately ½ an hour, until the top is golden and risen Serve with creamy mash and seasonal veg

whisk in the milk mixture (make sure it is not too hot or the eggs will scramble) Butter the hot cross buns and spread with marmalade and sandwich back together, keep 1 bun whole and cut the others in half the other way so that you have semi-circular pieces Place the whole bun in the centre of your baking dish and arrange the halves in a circle around the whole bun. Pour over your custard and leave the buns to absorb the custard for 15 minutes, gently pressing them down into the custard Place in the oven on the baking tray and cook for 35 - 40 minutes until golden brown and the custard is set Leave to rest for 10 minutes before serving with a little cream or ice cream Enjoy!

400ml whole milk

75g castor sugar

2 tbsp Cointreau (optional) zest of 1 orange

1 tsp vanilla extract

50g butter, softened

7 or 8 hot cross buns sliced in half 4 tbsp marmalade

Method

Heat your oven to 160C/140 Fan/Gas 3 and place a heavy baking sheet in the oven to heat up Pour the milk and cream into a saucepan and heat to just below a simmer In a large bowl whisk together the eggs and sugar together with the orange zest and Cointreau, if using. Carefully

Digital Assets and your Will

The use of digital assets and online access to assets has grown significantly in recent years – most of us have access to emails, photos stored online and maybe even social media accounts The value of digital assets can vary, and many people think that they hold sentimental value – it is therefore essential to ensure that you include your digital assets in your Will so that you can make certain they are passed on to your beneficiaries

What are digital assets?

Although there is no set definition of what is and is not a digital asset, they tend to range from tangible assets like phones and laptops to non-tangible assets like your PayPal accounts, cryptocurrency, photos stored online, emails, and social media accounts

Digital assets can be valuable in a monetary and/or sentimental sense

Do you need to include digital assets in your will?

If you want to ensure that your digital assets go to the person you would like, it is crucial to include them in your will. If they are not specifically given to a beneficiary, they will remain part of your residuary estate

Another reason to include digital assets in your will is to ensure that your Executors are aware of them Many people fail to include them in their will and they are then forgotten about If you have a digital asset that is valuable to you, you should draw it to your executors’ attention to ensure that they are able to access your account to retrieve information and/or close your accounts

For digital assets with monetary value, your executors will need to have access details to ensure they can verify the assets and establish the value for tax purposes, as your Executors will have to give details of all your assets (including digital assets) when providing this information to HMRC and the Probate Registry when applying for a Grant of Probate Keeping an up-to-date record of your online accounts with access details is recommended as there are often difficulties for executors when it comes to accessing digital assets

Tangible assets like laptops will be considered as part of one’s personal effects in your Estate however this does not mean that everything stored on your laptop is automatically included unless specifically given to a beneficiary Digital assets such as emails and photos might not be readily accessible to your Executors, therefore if you want these to pass to a specific beneficiary it is recommended to leave instructions as to how to gain access to them

ADVERTISEMENT OF NEW PREMISES LICENCES

Mr Chris Graveling is seeking a new premises licence for Salt and Sand Ltd s seeking a new premises licence for Whitewater café, 1-2 Marine View, Promenade, Cromer, NR27 9HE The licence is to serve alcohol with food from 12:00 till 20:00 daily.

If you wish to object to this application, written representations with full contact details should be made to the Licensing Authority below: Licensing Section, North Norfolk District Council, Council Offices, Holt Road, Cromer, Norfolk, NR27 9EN Representations should be made by 28/03/2023 (28 days starting day after the day on which the application was given to the authority by the applicant)

This application may be viewed during office hours at the above offices. N.B It is an offence, liable on conviction to a fine up to level 5 on the standard scale (£5,000), under Section 158 of the Licensing Act 2003 to make a false statement in or in connection with this application.

Social media accounts prove difficult to access following the account holder ’s death and the requirements vary between providers so it is recommended that you consider this as fulfilling the requirements can be time-consuming

If you want to leave any of your digital assets to a particular person, you should include instructions in your will (or in a letter with your will)

What happens if you do not include digital assets in your will?

Without a will your digital assets will pass to the person as per the rules of intestacy There is also a risk of your non-tangible digital assets being overlooked

Henry Geaves, squash coach from North Walsham, becomes the 32nd player to take handicap title

Cromer Squash Club hold four internal tournaments during the course of a season and the last one of these, the annual handicap tournament, traditionally takes place in the spring of each year just before the winter season of matches draws to an end The first tournament was held in 1981 and since then, apart from two years early in the millennium and again in 2021 because of COVID, players of all abilities have taken to the courts each year in a bid to lift the prestigious trophy which was originally presented by The Gateway Building Society

The beauty of the handicap tournament is that players of all abilities, in theory at least, have an equal chance of lifting the trophy but this year it was two of the lower handicap players, both regular members of the club’s high flying Norfolk League team, Henry Geaves (-8) and Ben Herrieven (-5) who fought their way through to the final Geaves was bidding to win the tournament for the first time, but Herrieven is a seasoned campaigner having previously got his name on the honours board sixteen years ago when he was the 2007 champion as well as twice going on to win the club championship itself in 2012 and 2014

Under the handicapping system Herrieven went into each game with a two-point lead but in the first game this proved irrelevant as Geaves soon pulled the handicap back to lead 5-2 and 10-4

before closing out the game 15-7. The second game, however, followed a completely different pattern as Herrieven led 5-2 and 9-5 before a run of five successive rallies enabled him to take the game 15-7 and draw level at 1-1

With the match evenly balanced the large crowd on the balcony sensed that the third game could prove decisive as Herrieven roared into a 10-3 lead However, he had to work hard for those points and although he went further ahead at 13-7, he was pleased to be able to take a breather as he just did enough to win the game 15-11

The fourth game was very much one way traffic as Geaves took it 15-5 against a visibly tiring Herrieven and then in a remarkable fifth game Geaves came from 2-8 down to win thirteen successive points to win the game 15-8 and the match 3-2 to become the thirty second different player to win the tournament

In the semi-finals both players had been involved in five game “thrillers” the previous evening Herrieven had beaten another former champion, Henri Paul 3-2 while Geaves had to come back from 7-12 down in the fifth to beat the reigning champion

Cromer Tides

Richard Keeble 3-2

Trophies were presented to the two finalists by CLTSA Chairman, Kelvin van Hasselt who said it was a pleasure to watch such an entertaining final after a hard week’s squash while Geaves said: “All credit to Ben. When I trailed 8-2 in the final game, I thought I was beaten but I managed to dig in for the second match in succession” and Herrieven said: “after two hard matches and a Norfolk League match on Tuesday this was one match too far and Henry overpowered me in the last two games ”
