A Note from th e Editor

Since I last wrote we have had the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla and now we are looking forwards to the summer Time to get out and about and judging by the number of events and club activities I have been puttin into the magazines, there are plenty of things to do over the next few months Music events, festivals, North Norfolk Open Studios and plenty of fetes, open gardens, sporting, and leisure activities Something for everyone It's also exam season for the youngsters over the next few weeks, with lots of revision to do and exam nerves to cope with. Best of luck for those taking GCSEs and A levels, it will all be worth the hard work in the end

May will continue the mixed weather features of April and temperatures will only recover slowly but after mid-month we should start to see more sustained fair weather with temperatures more representative of the second half of May June will continue the trend developing in the second half of May, but although by now the mass of cold air that built up over Arctic regions as early as August last year will be all but gone, any airstream coming down the North Sea across a still cold North Sea will certainly be noticeable

News from the Venue

We’ve had a very busy and successful April, with a variety of events from Tea Dances to Wrestling going on, all with great turn outs It was wonderful to have Big Top Wrestling back in the house, with an amazing evening of smack down entertainment! We had so many people that we ran out of chairs, and it was standing room only for those that came a little late Nevertheless, around 130 people had a super evening, and thank you to Aaron Wick and his team for bringing another great show to the Venue

We had another fundraising evening for the 1st Holt Scouts this month, this time a prize Bingo Night, which was enjoyed by over 90 people, and raised a record £1039 for our local Scout Troop! Our Kids Easter Fun Day was enjoyed by around 60 children, who all came to enjoy games, activities, a climbing wall, crafts and of course chocolate; many thanks to the Scouts and their leaders for helping to make this event so much fun for the children, to Giselle for providing cake decorating fun, June for helping with the crafts, the North Walsham Scouts who brought over their climbing wall and provided amazing fun for the kids, and last but not least to my daughter Daisy, who ran the entire event for me as I was very ill and couldn’t make it With a calm and cool head and lots of determination, she helped to make it a huge success, and I am both grateful and proud of her!

We had another first in the Venue in April; the new Holt Youth Town Council, who met for the first time and showed great enthusiasm and energy to help to serve the town It ’s an exciting initiative that the town council are taking, encouraging our younger people to have a voice and a say in the governing of the town, and we are thrilled to be able to help to enable this by hosting the meetings. Congratulations to Sandy Roper for heading up this great team, and to all the young people who put themselves forward to serve in this way

We had 2 super live music nights last month, with Southbound playing modern country rock and After Hours playing Blues/Rock, both of which were almost sold out, and provided a great, affordable night ’s entertainment It wasn’t that long ago that we had restrictions that prevented these sorts of live entertainment nights and following on from COVID we committed to providing opportunities to support the Arts and musicians, who effectively lost their livelihoods for 18 months I’m pleased to say that these evenings are being so well supported that there will be many more through the year!

Looking ahead to the upcoming month, we have an amazing Arts Forum Evening with 4 artists being interviewed, a CD and Record Fair, 2 evenings of Miracles and Gospel by Radical Church, Dali’s House Acoustic band playing on Tavern Night on 26th May, a great Ibiza Classics Dance Night on 3rd June, and a Bangers, Mash and Quiz Night on 17th June. As ever, we would love more people to get involved with the Venue, and there are many great volunteering opportunities available for people of all backgrounds and abilities Why not pop in or give us a call to see if you would like to join the crew? Arts Forum

A conversation about art and education on Wednesday 17th May with artist/workshop leaders

Hannelore Smith, (Director Artpocket - an education in creative arts), Rose Feather (illustrator, participatory picture book maker and arts facilitator), Cora Mullenger (a practicing artist who runs a variety of art workshops in the wider community), and Mary Blue (arts-based learning programme for Holt Festival), teaches at Groundwork Gallery, and piloted ‘Paint at the Museum’ with the Norfolk Museum service), each of whom will bring a slightly different slant or perspective to our discussion

Ruskin said ‘ The teaching of art is the teaching of all things’. This event

will be a discussion about the importance of arts education, or of education through the arts, from both a personal and a professional point of view; what makes a good arts educator/workshop leader? How someone becomes one? How and why each of them got into it and why they have continued to be so? How did they get to where they are now? What the life is like, the challenges and rewards, from their experience?

Each Forum lasts about an hour, after which there will be time for questions. It is held in the bar area and/or main Hall of The Venue, depending on numbers

The Holt Festival 2023, an essential fixture in the annual North Norfolk arts calendar, is proud to present another year of superlative talent and entertainment. We truly have something for everyone with a varied programme of superb classical music, comedy, talks, poetry and drama and a unique 'nautical’ musical experience to enjoy!

Highlights this year include the much-loved actor, author and stand-up comedian Julian Clary, in conversation with James McDermott about his varied life and career. Acclaimed pianist Peter Donohoe is joined by the renowned violinist Harriet Mackenzie in a wonderful programme of Romantic sonatas in the Auden Theatre In the same venue, performance poet Luke Wright gives us the final instalment of his political trilogy The Remains of Logan Dankworth, a big hit with audiences at the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe

You can also enjoy an unforgettable evening in the company of The Old Time Sailors, who take us back in time to the ships of the 19th Century for an immersive experience of traditional seafaring music Fancy dress is encouraged! The ever-popular comedy night returns with The Red Card Comedy Club, showcasing the comedy quartet, The Noise Next Door

Our free Family Friendly Festival Fun afternoon in the centre of Holt, which was very well received last year, is back again with Mad Dog Mcrea providing the entertainment with their unique mixture of folk rock, pop, gypsy jazz and bluegrass music Tickets are free but you must book first online And also, back by popular demand is Toyah, the original punk-princess, reprising her huge hits including I Want To Be Free and It ’s A Mystery, with her 5 piece electric band for a storming finish to the Holt Festival 2023

After the tremendous success of last year ’s Craxton-Picasso art exhibition, which had over 5,000 visitors, this year we have the German Expressionists & The Third Reich, featuring works by some of the artists deemed as ‘degenerate’ by Hitler We also have the annual Sir John Hurt, Sworders and Charlotte Fraser art prize exhibitions.

March Monthly Memory Swap

Appeal for Volunteer Beach Wardens to Support Rare Wildlife

This spring, Norfolk Wildlife Trust is on the search for volunteer wardens to help protect and monitor rare birds at NWT Holme Dunes nature reserve, on the North Norfolk coast, and its neighbouring beaches Over half of England’s most threatened breeding birds nest on the ground and for some, including ringed plover, little tern and oystercatcher, Norfolk’s coastline is a vital stronghold during the spring and summer After a long journey – in the case of little terns from Africa – the birds settle down on our coast to raise a family During this time, they face many challenges including disturbance, rising sea levels and predators

In the last 35 years, the population of ringed plovers in Norfolk has declined by a shocking 79 per cent, with just 123 pairs recorded in 2018 Norfolk is the most important county in the UK for nesting little terns In 2021 almost half of the UK population (roughly 691 pairs) of these birds were attempting to nest across the North and East of Norfolk Oystercatcher numbers are also dropping, seeing them join the little tern on the Amber list of conservation concern.

To help beach-nesting bird populations to recover, organisations such as Norfolk Wildlife Trust protect and monitor these avian tourists during their annual visit to our shores, with the support of volunteer beach wardens To help give these special birds enough space to raise their families Norfolk Wildlife Trust are keen for Holme Dunes beach visitors to understand the need to keep a distance from special fenced-off nesting areas on the beach, to be vigilant for the tiny chicks that may be feeding on the shoreline, and to keep their dogs under effective control

Tori Backham, Assistant Warden at NWT Holme Dunes, explains: “Our beach wardens act as guardians to our vulnerable beach-nesting birds. They support our wildlife by patrolling the beaches, helping the public to understand the importance of looking after these special species, as well as recording bird behaviour and nesting activity

“ This vital work would not be possible without the help of a band of friendly, enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers If you feel passionate about making a difference and you have some spare time to give, we’d love to hear from you. It ’s such an important job and an incredibly beautiful setting – there's really no better place to be!”

The April meeting was well attended and there were three new visitors Hopefully they will become full members Every month we have had visitors who came to see what the W I has to offer and they have all decided to join Holt WI which is good news

Our speaker was James Glennie who gave an interesting talk on German Expressionist Art and showed slides of work worth millions of pounds He was very knowledgeable and offered to do a private viewing for W I members at the Art Exhibition in St Andrews Church in July

Refreshments included delicious Easter chocolate cupcakes made by committee members and enjoyed by everyone. After the raffle birthday posies were presented

Next month’s meeting is very much Coronation themed with a special tea, raffle prizes and a Royal quiz

Rental evictions increase following lockdown lift

Landlord possession actions were halted when the country went into lockdown in March 2020 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, with the aim of easing the financial pressure on struggling families and individuals.

Following the lift on restrictions, the number of tenants evicted from private rented homes across England has seen a peak, although figures are still falling short of pre-pandemic levels Shelter, a charity which provides housing support, has reported that in England 1 in 12 private renters find themselves under the threat of an eviction with 1 in 4 renters consistently struggling to pay their rent

The current cost of living crisis has impacted not only on tenants but landlords who are finding themselves under financial pressure

With interest rates on mortgages increasing, homeowners are facing higher costs Tenants may find themselves in situations where their landlords are wanting to increase their rent

Legally landlords can only do this in certain situations or where the tenant agrees to the rise in rent It is possible for a tenant to challenge or even refuse the rent increase

In the UK, eviction is a classed as a civil process whereby a landlord can legally remove a tenant from a rental property This process can take a few months and landlords will have to give notice to their tenant of the planned eviction The amount of notice that a landlord is required to give to the tenant will vary depending on the type of tenancy agreement in place

What can you do if you do not agree with the increase in rent?

If you do not wish to agree to the rent increase demanded by your landlord, the initial approach that you can take is to seek to negotiate with them Try to reach an agreement on a lower rental figure by writing to them and clearly identifying the sum that you feel would be reasonable and are willing to pay If the attempt to reach an agreement by negotiation fails and you find yourself in a position facing eviction you should seek legal advice. A legal professional will be able to advise you of your rights as a tenant and can help you to challenge the proceedings

Baking back in time!

At Age Concern North Norfolk we cook around 40 meals per day for people in the day centre, the Lunch Club and for the Meals on Heels service Our chef has the luxury of modern appliances and labour saving equipment although our kitchen is relatively small and we are planning to extend and refurbish the area in the next year once we have the funding

As part of our Reminiscence session, we stepped back in time to use kitchen tools that required a more hands on approach with weighing flour and butter on scales, mixing by hand and using wooden rolling pins to make some scones It was a very interactive session and everyone listened to an old Bakelite radio while concentrating on making the perfect scone

In building up our resources, we welcome donations of small items from the 50’s and 60’s to help us use the genuine articles in our reminiscence sessions although we do make use of the local library ’s packs which are great conversation starters Reminiscence involves sharing thoughts and feelings of everyone’s experiences to recall and reflect on important

events within their lives The ability to recall and reflect helps older people to remember who they used to be in order to help them define their identity in the current moment The stories of the past provide a source of affirmation, hope, and a belief that their legacy will be preserved.

Dear Friends,

One of the loveliest images we have of Jesus in the gospels is that of Jesus as the Good Shepherd The picture of the shepherd is one, which is deeply woven into the language and the imagery of the Bible

In the Old Testament, particularly in the psalms God is often pictured as the Shepherd and the people as His flock The 23rd psalm, “ The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want ” is probably the most well known psalm today In the New Testament Jesus says of himself, “ I am the Good Shepherd” and in doing so he speaks to us of a God who is not cold, distant, aloof and uncaring, rather of a God who cares, cares enough to come looking for us, who knows us by name and will lead us home This image of Jesus as the good shepherd is one which has comforted and reassured people over countless centuries Yet Jesus provides us not only with an image of a God who loves us, but also with an example to follow and a call to imitate the actions of the good shepherd

Therefore, we are called to care for one another and especially for all those in need; the poor, the vulnerable, the marginalised, innocent victims of conflict, violence and abuse

Like a good shepherd who cares for their flock we are called to care for and protect the unborn, the terminally ill, the aged and all who are struggling with life In every walk of life we need people who care about the welfare of others rather than their own selfish interest People who care for the well-being of our teachers, doctors and nurses struggling with stresses of impersonal, uncaring inspections and a national health service that is struggling to cope with the demand upon it People who look out for and help the poor, the vulnerable, struggling, the mentally ill, the aged, and the weak.

I give thanks to God that I live in a caring community but of course there is always more we can do; too many people are suffering silently and perhaps are too afraid to ask for help. Caring for others ought to be second nature to us but sometimes it takes an effort of will to go out of our way to care for someone Yet it is by caring that we not only show our love for another, but perhaps more importanly are enabled to give another person their true value and worth.

Dear Jo,

Dogs Are Not Humans

I've noticed many cafes, restaurants and hotels in North Norfolk allow dogs into their eating areas now I suspect from the proprietors' perspective the motive is purely money and no other reason Don't misunderstand me, I love dogs But please can we have more appropriate control over dogs in human spaces Dogs are not human They do not belong sitting on a chair at a table licking off a plate, as I saw in a café last week, or urinating on a pew as witnessed in Cromer church. These are inappropriate and are also health risks for us humans

Dogs yapping at each other incessantly under tables, as experienced in a hotel restaurant in Holt and in another hotel/pub bar in Cromer This ruins enjoyment and causes stress to other diners

Many people have a dog allergy An older lady was sitting in a café recently when a family came in with 3 dogs and sat next to her table She politely asked them to move to another table as she was allergic to dogs One of them at her spat abuse and refused to move She felt forced to leave and is now very nervous about going out to local cafes alone. Please let ’s keep dogs as dogs – they are NOT HUMANS

Footpath Needed

I write in support of the letter written by Peta Benson, bemoaning the lack of a footpath from Holt Town and out along the B1149 Norwich Road to Holt Country Park. It ’s such a short distance of pathway required, it seems an obvious necessity to ensure that locals and visitor pedestrians also wheelchairs/buggy users alike, have safe access to the wonderful Holt Country Park

My wife and I recently enjoyed a circular walk around Holt Town, taking in the ‘Little Hills, Spout Hills, Candlestick Lane and Holt Country Park including a visit to ‘Hetties’ for coffee and bacon rolls! Very clean, tidy toilet facilities are available here We wandered through the park, heathland and forest finally exiting at Mackeys Hill Car Park, on to the Hempstead Road, then turned left to the underpass and Station Road into Town following the footpath alongside Gresham’s playing fields Where we were obstructed by a ridiculously placed telegraph pole hazard in the middle of the footpath, this should surely be relocated Holt Town Council?

Note for North Norfolk District Council: Mackeys Hill access/exit is in need of a total reconstruction Even for pedestrian access you need to be in ‘Full Off Road’ mode, with walking poles, it is only then suitable for the agile, nimble and wellie wearing ramblers Definitely unsuitable for wheelchair access! Holt Country Park should have this at the top of their to do list, if ‘Access for All’ is a mission statement of theirs Surely, it ’s not a cynical ploy to discourage access at this point, in favour of the Main Car Park off the Norwich Road, where there is a ‘Pay to Park’ requirement!

I have no sense of how long nor far this walk may be, or how many calories were expended, nor indeed those consumed at ‘Hetties’ But it ’s a good walk that lifted our spirits!

Just like the excellent ‘ Town Trail’, perhaps a ‘Walking Trail’ around Holt Town could be established and signposted Now there’s a thought?

Noise nuisance

Dear Jo,

Thank you for printing my email / letter re noise nuisance, in the March Chronicle.

I am nonplussed at the two letters, April issue, which have criticised my perfectly valid opinion, which was patently not, a criticism of our armed forces

Rather, this was a complaint about a pilot, joyriding over Holt, and I am convinced that's what it was and I stand by my original email / letter

My father fought in Burma during the 2nd world war, a cruel war, he was injured and reported missing, he did return home but a changed man I am enormously proud of him, and others like him.

Although very young I remember the horror of the blitz, and when older, realised what we owed the brave young men who fought in the skies over Britain, we would all be living different lives without them and the sacrifices they made

This is private family information; however, I mention it because I take exception to your remark regarding my lack of tolerance

Furthermore, and finally, you must be aware that any practice, training etc, should be carried out once the pilot is out at sea and should never be over residential areas

Hopkin Homes Development Hempstead Road,

In June 2021 Hopkin Homes said it was viable to build 52 Homes on this site - 23 would be Affordable Homes as part of Planning Obligations 8 months later Hopkins said it would lose £2 5m on the site Another 8 months later Hopkins said the loss had increased to £3 5m

When Councillors considered the proposal in Committee, they incredibly voted to give Hopkin Homes £600,000 to Hopkins to build on the site They were told that it would enable Flagship Homes to then buy the 23 affordable homes

So, who got what?

Flagship get a Government subsidy to allow them to buy the 23 homes at “near market value” and £600,000 from the Council.

Hopkin Homes gets an increased profit as all houses were sold at market rate/ near market rate North Norfolk get no Planning Obligations for the 23 Homes and pay £600,000 taken from planning obligations on other sites

Taxpayers pay the subsidy bill, and Norfolk ratepayers pay £600,000 Easy money for developers

What do Planners say?

They erroneously advised Committee that Hopkins could claim 15-20% profit on the development - instead of advising that this percentage was only a cost to be put in a viability assessment, and not a guarantee that Hopkins should get at the end of a build

Ask Councillors on the planning Committee “why ” they accept such

Holiday Bible Club

This egg-cellent group of children enjoyed another Holiday Bible Club at Briston's Copeman Centre in April They had a cracking time decorating egg-shaped biscuits and making collages of the Easter story, with singing and a quiz-game finale too

More Houses?

Do the residents of Holt know that yet another development of houses is planned, this time on the western side overlooking the Wensum Valley and Spout Hills?

The NNDC seem to have no interest in preserving any vestige of Holt, its unique character drowned in a fresh avalanche of traffic on the A418, its environmental concerns ignored and in practical terms, the extra burden of water, sewage etc with yet another lot of houses when the housing target for the area is already an additional 585 new builds

Is this one necessary? I think not

A Good Night Out

In March a group of ten veterans from North Norfolk Hub joined with a group of twenty veterans from the Norwich Hub for a First World War Battlefield Pilgrimage to the Ypres Salient in Belgium The Outside the Wire Charity, part of the Mathew Project, enabled the visit and Empire Battlefield Tours provided the guiding over four days

Places visited included the Tyne Cot cemetery, Hill 60, Passchendaele and the Menin Gate Memorial, where the names of over fifty-four thousand missing soldiers are inscribed on its walls Since 1928 the last post has sounded here at 8 pm every night, 365 days of the year There was a break for the Second World War when it was played elsewhere The group took part in the service where a wreath was laid in respect of the fallen

Here at the Glaven, we have been busy organising and preparing for our coronation party on the 3rd of May - We will be celebrating a new chapter for our country being led by King Charles III; a momentous occasion for us all We also look forward to the lovely Blakeney

Primary school coming in regularly to play games, chat and have fun with us. Children and older adults spending time together is a hugely positive experience Inter-generational participation and meaningful cross-age relationships may decrease social isolation In older adults it can also increase their sense of belonging, self-esteem and well-being; whilst also improving both the social and emotional skills of the children What a treasured exchange and enhanced well-being all-round for our lovely clients, here at the Glaven

In view of this, we would like to remember a very special client of ours, Mary Jones Mary was a reception schoolteacher and particularly benefited from this inter-generational exchange Her smile lit up the room when being alongside those children Being a teacher was innate for Mary and she used to tell us she was like a mother hen in the classroom, what an inspirational lady and well adored member of the Holt community. Mary will be truly missed Our love goes out to her family at this time

We would like you to know that we are here for anyone who feels lonely or isolated We welcome people to drop in on Mondays from 10am til 12, for hot drinks and chats, to enjoy company and to feel the warm sense of community

Cheeky Chickpeas!

For those of you who have never delved into the delights of chickpeas, here’s a great recipe to ease you in without too much of a shock This is so ridiculously easy to do, and so cheap, that I’m kicking myself for not trying it before! Needless to say, these savoury pancakes are now a regular fixture in our suppers and lunches. Chickpea, or Besan / Gram flour, can be bought in most supermarkets, health food stores and delicatessens for between £1 and £2 only, and a little goes a long way You can make all sorts of interesting things with it, such as falafel or bhaji, but this recipe is by far the easiest way to make the most of a great ingredient The great thing about this is you can roll up anything you like in it and it will taste delicious; our favourite is bean chilli, which again is cheap as chips and keeps for days in the fridge This is also gluten free for anyone who struggles with wheat and can be whipped up in no time at all for any unexpected vegans who might call round! I’ve added a little turmeric into the mix for a bit more flavour that works well with the filling, but feel free to leave it out; it works just as well without it

Savoury Chickpea Pancakes

1 cup chickpea flour

1 and ½ cups warm water

Pinch salt

Pinch pepper

½ tsp ground turmeric (optional)

A little oil

Add all dry ingredients to a bowl and whisk in the water until it is all combined Leave to thicken for at least 15 minutes You will need a good non-stick pan for this to work

There’s nothing like sitting down with a cup of tea and a biscuit to unwind and de-stress It gets even better when you make your own biscuits This recipe beats shop bought biscuits by a mile and are so simple to make Not just to have with tea, they are a lovely addition to have with ice cream or, if you are feeling really decadent, you could sandwich them together with buttercream or jam for a teatime treat You will need 2 flat baking sheets lined with baking parchment and an electric hand mixer or stand mixer for best results You will also need a large piping bag and open star nozzle

Makes approx 16 biscuits

Butter Biscuits

Ingredients

200g butter, softened

100g icing sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ teaspoon salt

2 egg whites

290g plain flour

Method

well Brush a little oil into the bottom and heat the pan up on high Whisk the batter again Turn down to a medium high heat and pour in enough to cover the bottom of the pan Cook for approximately 3 mins, or until the underneath is starting to colour. Using a large spatula, flip the pancake, and cook for a further 1 minute on the other side Put onto a warm plate and cover with a clean tea towel while you cook the rest (this recipe makes 3-4)

Once they are all done, fill them with your favourite filling, roll up and munch!

Suggested fillings:

Make some simple guacamole which goes well with most fillings:

• Mash up a ripe avocado with a couple of good pinches of smoked paprika and garlic salt and squeeze half a lime over and mix well. Spread some hummus down the middle, add guacamole, bean chilli, and top with diced salad, drizzle with a little mayo and roll

• Any leftover meat such as chicken, with chopped peppers, spring onions, halved cherry tomatoes and a drizzle of balsamic glaze

• Leave out the turmeric, and stuff with feta cheese, chopped salad, olives, fresh herbs and a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar

• Fry up some chopped smoked bacon with chopped onion in a little oil and add in some chopped cooked new potatoes Season well and add a little smoked paprika for a quick hash

• Fry up some minced beef and finely chopped onion, add in some chilli powder and smoked paprika and a tin of kidney beans for a quick filling Moisten with a little sweet chilli sauce

Preheat your oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6

In a large bowl combine the butter, icing sugar, vanilla and salt with a spatula, then whisk together with an electric whisk for 3-4 minutes, scraping down the bowl midway to ensure everything is well mixed and fluffy (Whisking for this long makes the biscuits nice and crumbly)

Add the 2 egg whites and whisk again until you have a smooth, creamy mixture (This will look curdled to begin with but keep going)

Next start adding the flour in 2-3 batches and fold in with a spatula until you have a soft and smooth dough Fill your piping bag with the dough and pipe it in rosettes onto

North Norfolk Studios Reepham Art Trail is back!

Norfolk Open Studios is back again this spring for a third year and it ’s bigger than ever with 150 artists signed up to exhibit over a wider area than previously

The event will take place from Saturday 27th May until Sunday 4th June, coinciding with the half term and spring bank holiday Details of participating artists, opening times and maps can be found on the excellent and very accessible new website: northnorfolkstudios co uk

A brochure will also be available from early May in your local libraries, shops and tourist offices

As before the artists have been organized into trails and this year there are seventeen trails covering an area from Castle Acre and Fakenham to Potter Heigham and Acle and all along the coast from Burnham Market to Happisburgh

On the Reepham and District Art Trail there are 17 artists at 11 venues covering Melton Constable, Briston, Corpusty, Wood Dalling, Foulsham, Kerdiston and the historic market town of Reepham

There’s a huge variety of art to discover, as well as the uniqueness of each studio: paintings, prints, drawing, illustration, textiles, ceramics, sculpture, jewellery, mixed media, woodwork and furniture

Most studios are open daily 10am – 5pm

North Norfolk Chamber Opera

Holt Probus Club has a new Chairman – he is David Buxton. Dave is a retired Building Services Consultant, and a former soldier with BAOR (the British Army on the Rhine) with 2RTR (the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment) including two tours in Northern Ireland He returned to civilian life to building services consultancy before joining Norfolk County Council and spending what he describes as “many happy years” as Head of Engineering

Holt Probus is happily settled into their new “home” in The Venue, where a superb lunch is prepared from them on the first Wednesday every month

At the April meeting, there was spaghetti bolognese followed by a delicious pudding.

The club would welcome new members; covid and natural wastage have had some effect, and so applications from any man interested are encouraged Meetings are once a month and there are no obligations to membership, except to notify the Treasurer if you are not coming to the next meal

As well as a very good meal in good company, this is usually followed by an interesting talk; outings to places of interest are arranged a couple of times a year

Health: As many birds are considered prey species they are adept at hiding illness This means that often by the time signs become obvious the bird has already been unwell for quite a while To help keep our feathery friends in tip top condition it is worth looking out for :

• Signs your bird looks subdued and is not interacting as they normally would

• He or she has laboured breathing –this is easiest to see by looking for bobbing of the tail during breathing

• Feathers changes such as being fluffed up, dull, matted or there are missing feathers

• Signs of lethargy

• Lack of interest in food and toys

• Sitting at the bottom of the cage

• Change in the consistency or colour of faeces/droppings

It is a good idea to weigh your bird regularly as often weight loss or gain will be a subtle signs something isn’t right Birds can be trained to stand on an artificial perch on a set of scales, so are easy to weigh regularly with a little encouragement

Training your bird to take feeds from a syringe can be a lifesaver when it comes to medicating them in the future, the less handling and stress you put your sick bird through the quicker they will hopefully recover

Pet birds shouldn’t require routine worm or parasite treatment but if you’re worried, pop in a pooled sample (faeces collected from 3-5 days of droppings) so

A new venture has been announced by the Trail of Discovery Group, part of the Glaven Valley Arts Society

Designed for the whole family, this is an illustrated circular walk around Blakeney that will stir the imagination and show off the fascinating history of the village Suitable for pushchairs and visiting fourteen places of interest, the trail should take no more than about an hour and a half It starts and finishes at Blakeney Village Hall (free parking) although you may wish to pick up the walk at other points in the village – why not take a break from your crabbing?

This year has been an exceptionally busy year for Holt Town Council, and we are delighted to share with you some of our Highlights.

Jubilee Events and Funding We look back on the jubilee celebrations fondly, last June the High Street came alive with local bands performing, we welcomed Lady Dannatt to the town who officially cut our Jubilee cake and unveiled the Jubilee Slates

We secured 20 free fruiting trees as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy project, thus creating our first community orchard located off Beresford Road. We also (in partnership with Bakers and Larner ’s and Greening Holt) planted a Jubilee Magnolia Tree, there will be a long-lasting memory in the town of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s long reign

Holt Fairy Trail

This year Holt Town Council partnered with Holt Library,

Norwich Men’s Shed and Holt Primary School to create the Fairy Trail around the town Artwork from local school children has been turned into Fairy Doors and a walk leaflet shows the trail whereby you can visit all the doors and admire the children’s work

Gym Park

This year saw the opening of the new Gym Park on land off Beresford Road, with an official launch planned for the Summer

Town Signage

New town signage has been installed on all entrance points to the town This was partly grant funded by Norfolk County Council through their Parish Partnership Scheme and goes some way to welcome visitors to the town and advertises some of the town’s amenities

Church Street Parking

The Town Council secured additional temporary parking down Church Street to off set parking lost due to the renovation works at the old carpet shop The additional parking will be available until the end of the year

Community Support Fund

The Town Council have been supporting, (along with St Andrew ’s Church, The Methodist Church, The Treehouse Café, Holt Housing, the Scouts, Holt Youth Project and other local stakeholders) the Holt Community Support

THE GOLD SHOP

Fund This is a fund for local people to access, to help them with their energy costs The Town Council were fortunate to be able to secure £10,000 of funding from The Norfolk Community Foundation which they donated to the fund Residents who are struggling in the cost-of-living crisis are encouraged to access the fund through the North Norfolk Food Bank

Neighbourhood Plan

Holt has finished writing its Neighbourhood Plan, the plan has gone through examination. A referendum is planned for late June whereby it will be voted on by residents, and if successful, will become fully adopted by NNDC

Holt Youth Council

This year has also seen the creation of the Holt Youth Council, which is made up by 10 individuals representing the youth in the town They have some exciting ideas and projects which we look forward to telling you about this year

Defibrillators

Holt Town Council have added two new defibrillators to its portfolio, one new installation took place on the Harris and James building, and we adopted the Defib on The Sponge building A new defib will be installed on the Budgens building (in memory of the late Peter McCallister), and The Playing Fields, to replace current defib which is out of action

Looking to the Future

Holt Town Council continue to work on improving the public realm space in the centre of town and look forward to sharing the proposals from the Holt Vision 2023 with members of the public this autumn

We have secured £15,000 from NNDC ’s Sustainable Communities Fund to refurbish the Church Street toilets; we look forward to bringing you a modern facility with a disabled toilet and hot running water

We will also continue working on Holt ’s Green Wheel whereby we will be encouraging walking and cycling around the town and improved pedestrian access to Holt Country Park

We look forward to receiving the new allotments on Heath Farm which are being transferred to us from Lovells

I speak on behalf of the whole council when I say it has been a pleasure representing the community of Holt over the last year

The Holt Society is delighted to announce that following the huge success of the talk by Julian Barnwell, on the finding of HMS Gloucester, just off the Norfolk coast; our committee members Polly Binns and Susan Williams have been able to work with Holt Primary School to arrange and sponsor a visit to the Norwich Castle Museum Gloucester exhibition, for the pupils in years three and five

Using the surplus from the talk coupled with income from the sale of our children’s book ‘Escapades in Holt ’ we have been able to donate £600 to the school This has enabled us to work with the headteacher, Simon Walters and his staff to schedule a visit in June to the Norwich Castle Museum 27 Year 3 (7–8-year-olds) and 26 Year 5 (9-10 year-olds) children will have the opportunity to travel by Sanders coach, accompanied by staff and volunteers, to the museum where they will attend a workshop and be able to view the Gloucester Wreck exhibition

The discovery and recovery of some of the artefacts is a massive internationally important project in this region, which will resonate throughout all the children’s future school years So, to go and experience the exhibition at this early stage is such an exciting opportunity for them

We are very pleased to be able to support Holt Primary School to undertake this visit The Society feels very strongly that it should be encouraging such educational opportunities, which help develop this young audience to understand the historic world around them

Our thanks go to all those who attended our talk, ‘ The Discovery of the Gloucester 1682: a Well-kept Secret ’ in February this year, along with those who helped the funding by purchasing ‘Escapades in Holt ’ . Without their support the Holt Society would not be able to grant such a unique opportunity for this generation to enjoy

A Window into Fascia and Myofascial Release (myo: muscle; myofascia: muscle fascia)

The fascial system is a three-dimensional, connective tissue matrix One unit that touches all our other systems Fascia surrounds and weaves its way under, around and through the body; skin to muscles, muscle fibres to viscera, spinal cord, nerves, nerve fibres and brain. A fantastical communication network also believed to be a transport medium for cells, nutrients and wastes

Fascia is sensory in its nature and the fascial system has more sensory receptors than the skin; sensory receptors are found at the end of every nerve fibre These sensory receptors respond to a range of stimulus including:

Mechanoreception: sense of touch, pressure and load

Proprioception: sense of body position and movement in space

Interoception: the sense of self and emotion

Nociception: the sense of potential or actual tissue damage

The techniques used in Myofascial Release engage with these different stimuli to activate the sensory receptors which in turn influence the change in the fascial tissue

One technique called the Cross Hand Release applies a light, sustained pressure (mechanosensation) to allow changes to occur in the myofascial network With crossed hands and applying a light downward pressure the therapist allows her hands to sink slowly down into the tissue until meeting a firm resistance Waiting here until feeling a melting sensation then separating her hands to meet the next barrier of resistance As the fascia continues yielding to the touch there will eventually be a feeling of motion under the therapist's hands often described as a 'tissue unwind'

To facilitate greater change during application of the techniques the therapist engages the client in the process to encourage self-awareness (interoception) The therapist may ask the client to breathe deeply or to notice any softening or movement under the therapist's hands or elsewhere in the body The nerves that transmit interoceptive information to the brain also transmit nociceptive information (nociceptors acknowledge pain and

discomfort) Engaging our interoceptive sense allows for less nociceptive information to reach the brain, in other words allowing for a possible decrease in feelings of pain and discomfort

The techniques of myofascial release are designed to alleviate tension and restrictions in the myofascia to help to restore balance and function

Are mirror wills right for us?

If you are married, in a civil partnership or cohabiting with a long term partner, and thinking of making or updating your will, you may have heard the expression ‘mirror wills’ and wonder if this would be suitable for you

Mirror wills are wills made by two or more people in identical or very similar terms –effectively mirroring each other ’s arrangements

For many couples, mirror wills may be the most appropriate option, but you should always check with a legal professional as some circumstances might mean that mirror wills are not the best approach for you

What are mirror wills?

Mirror wills are used to ensure that everything you own passes according to the shared wishes of both parties A typical set up for mirror wills is for everything to pass to the surviving partner, and then after they die everything will pass to those people or charities that you both chose together

How are mirror wills used?

Mirror wills are particularly useful for those in second marriages or with children from previous relationships, as they help to ensure that both sides of the family are treated fairly and equally.

If you decide to make separate wills and you do not mirror your wishes, any money or property passing to the survivor after the first death, will then ultimately pass according only

to their wishes

Advantages of mirror wills

Mirror wills are useful to protect the interests of the survivor as well as the remaining family of the first person to die For married couples and those in a civil partnership, mirror wills are also likely to be beneficial for the purpose of inheritance tax, as including each other as beneficiaries initially allows you to take advantage of the tax free allowances available

Disadvantages of mirror wills

Mirror wills do not come with any assurance that the survivor will not change their will, make a new will, or remarry following the first death

Before making your mirror wills, it is imperative that you completely trust one another to stick by any joint decisions you make once one of you is no longer alive As there is no legal obligation on the survivor to retain the terms of the mirror wills, they could simply make a new will leaving everything to beneficiaries of their own choosing, such as their own biological children. As such, mirror wills might not be suitable if there is any element of distrust or if your families do not get along

It is also important to note that any later marriage or civil partnership would automatically revoke the survivor ’s will As such, your jointly chosen

beneficiaries could miss out even if this is not the survivor ’s intention If the survivor does remarry, they should seek legal advice to ensure that their will continues to accurately reflect your joint wishes.

Silver Linings for Viking Swimmers

North Norfolk Vikings Swimming Club had considerable success when they achieved twenty-eight medals and seventy-one personal best times at a gala hosted by the Norwich Swan Club at the UEA Sports Park

Emily Morton left a weekend of competition with a magnificent seven medals across a broad spectrum of events and has already established herself as an accomplished County Swimmer Of the seven medals it was her silver in the 400m freestyle in which she was magnanimous Emily completed the swim in 5 05:32.00 only split seconds outside the gold, and in a close race throughout The 14-year-old added three more silvers when she went 35 18 for the 50m butterfly, 1 19 65 over the 100m and in the 200m freestyle she touched in 2:20 65

Rebecca Burrows also had success in the 400m freestyle when she won silver in 5.44.79 in a different age group and went on to achieved two bronze medals The 200m backstroke (2 55 81)) and the 200m freestyle in 2.47.72 respectively The Broadland High School student swam a personal best on each outing

Maisie Fagan also improved when she went seven seconds better at the end of the 200m freestyle The 15-year-old finished in .2:43.45 to gain a silver adjacent to the bronze won by Rebecca in the

same event

It was also over 200m when 11-year-old Reuben Seaman claimed his silver in the breaststroke in 4 03 38

Blakeney Rowing Club Takes Out Two Boats

The Blakeney rowing season is now in full swing with both skiffs, Bluejacket and Hoi Larntan, often being rowed alongside each other in all sorts of weather Rain, wind and shine have combined over the last few weeks to make conditions interesting and enjoyable for all “Crabbers ” See some great pictures and descriptions on the club website at crablakeney wordpress com

At the time of writing, preparations are in progress for two great events

The first is the gathering of boats in France for La Semaine du Golfe du Morbihan between May 15th and May 21st. Then comes The Broads Tour which will last from 26th June until 30th June These meetings will provide tremendous opportunities for members of the rowing community to meet and enjoy some amazing times on the water

Other competitive events on the calendar include The Round Canvey Island Race on July 22nd and the Morston and Blakeney Regattas on August 6th and August 20th respectively What a great range of meetings to look forward to with plenty of social rowing in between!

This year brings the tenth anniversary of your local rowing club Members will be joining together on May 27th to celebrate this milestone. There will be plenty of good conversation about past and future rowing experiences

‘ The Salthouse’ Art Exhibition

In the light, bright and reflective space of the beautiful church of St Nicholas, Salthouse, ‘ The Salthouse’, a group of Christian creatives, will again be exhibiting this summer The eight artists, who work in various media and genres, from acrylic and oil paintings, glass and textiles, sound and poetry. Each artist finds inspiration from an understanding that we are all, to some extent, creative because we are made in the image of a Creator who loves us and loves the world we are blessed to live in The church, set high between farmland and marsh, land and sea, is worth a visit in itself and many find it a place of deep peace, a place to sit and ponder.

One of the exhibitors, Ian Dyble says ‘I love this place and it is a real joy to be exhibiting again this year Our hope as artists is that many people will come along and enjoy the art but also find a sense of wonder and, perhaps, see a higher hand at work ’

Artist and organiser Tracey Ross says

‘I am absolutely delighted The Salthouse is happening again this summer It is such a great opportunity to see how artists express their creativity through art and faith This year we have the pleasure of a sound artist and an eco-printed textile designer to help fill the church with colour and the sound of nature’

Many of the artists will be offering original work for sale, as well as prints and cards

There will be a Private Viewing between 6 00pm and 8 00pm on Wednesday 14th June and the date of exhibition runs from 14th to 20th June and will be open daily between 10.00am and 5.30pm. Entry is free.

Brainy Briston Loves a Quiz

'The best quiz for miles' - 'Brilliant evening and amazing supper!' - 'Best evening locally for years!' - so said many of the crowd who came along to the latest 'Sounds and Pictures' Quiz at the Copeman Centre, Briston, on Saturday April 29th The 120 picture, video and sounds questions were very mixed - some easy, some hard, some funny, some just downright daft - but everyone enjoyed them - and the Jacket Potato supper with a pudding and tea or coffee was included too - and all at just £6 a head!

After all costs, a profit of £317 benefited the Copeman Centre's Funds If you enjoy a good evening out, at a budget price, why not join us for our next Quiz on Saturday October 28th? Chuckles and Chopsticks!

Here is a date for your diary - Friday June 2nd - and the venue is the Copeman Centre, Hall Street, Briston NR24 2LG - and what's it all about? It's the latest Briston Organ Show of course, but with a big difference This is our 'Home Grown' show - lots of super music from local organ and keyboard maestro Mick Leary, with loads of humorous interludes too, and the inaugural programme from the newly formed BBC (the Briston Broadcasting Corporation) which will be shown on our big screen; be prepared for a few technical hitches, dodgy out-takes, and general mayhem from our world-wide correspondents, who will be reporting from as far away as Little Snoring, but hopefully it will be alright on the night (or not, as the case may be!) but it should tittivate your chuckle muscles anyway!
