Hi Everyone and welcome the
I hope you all had a wonderful May with all the bank holidays & celebrations going on, the amazing weather has helped hasn’t it?!
June Edition...
I’ve loved May, I enjoyed watching the Coronation with my family. Yes, I made my 3 teenage children watch it as its a huge moment in history. We had a full english breakfast and then afternoon tea later , followed by board games into the evening - how very British. It was a lovely, relaxed, family day. I then went on a 3 day quick break to Spain with my lovely friend Karen for my birthday. I’m still celebrating my 50th from February. Well, when I say celebrating, I completely dislike being 50, but I’ll take all the trips, events and ‘celebrations’ that come with it!
This months magazine has everything ‘local’ you could need. Wonderful businesses, tradespeople, articles about local businesses - this edition’s is about the importance of getting your hearing checked and about breaking down the stigma of hearing aids. Glasses have almost become a
fashion accessory yet there is still a big stigma attached to wearing hearing aids. Our eyes and hearing both change throughout life but why the difference? Have a read of the article on page 12. We also have adverts and articles about lots of local events that are happening and you should definitely look at going along to some of them:
Rugby Theatre ‘School of Rock’ - page 10
Hamplified FREE Festival - page 38
Festival on the Close - page 39
Community News - page 46 & 47
Warwickshire Open Studios - page 47
And finally, cheek out the article on page 30 about Rugby Litter Busters - local people, making our local area litter free. If you fancy being a Womble and joining them, they would love to have you.
Wishing you all a wonderful, sunny June.

We have our eyes tested, our teeth checked, so why do we not have a hearing healthcare check up?
A common perception is that hearing loss is the result of ageing –this is not necessarily true; in fact many of us aged between forty and sixty have some degree of hearing loss. Having a 10 minute hearing health screen can tell you the possible cause of your hearing difficulty, such as an infection or a build up of wax. It could be hereditary, exposure to loud noise, or due to a virus. You could also experience tinnitus or problems with your balance. Or it could be due to the natural ageing process, so it is worth having a free screen to find out the cause and your best course of action.
There are approximately 11 million people in this country with a hearing loss which makes it the second most common disorder in the UK. 6.7 million could benefit from hearing aids but only about 2 million people use them. Over the last few years there has been growing evidence of a link between hearing loss and dementia –the greater the loss, the greater the risk. One thought is that hearing loss can make the brain work harder, forcing it to strain to hear and fill in the gaps. This comes at the expense of other thinking and memory systems. Another possibility is that hearing loss causes the ageing brain to shrink more quickly. A third possibility is that hearing loss leads people to be less socially engaged, which is hugely important to remaining intellectually stimulated. If you cannot hear very well, you may not go out as much, so the brain is less engaged and active. Nine risk factors are thought to contribute to the risk of dementia; what maybe surprising is that unaddressed midlife hearing loss is the most significant. However, many people did not consider hearing loss as an “avoidable” risk factor. Hearing loss is also associated with numerous physical health conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, anaemia, chronic kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, sleep apnoea, balance problems and an increased risk of falls. There is good evidence that proper diagnosis and management of hearing loss reduces the additional risk of dementia caused by that loss.
Studies show that the earlier someone is fitted with a hearing aid, the more likely it is that they will wear it and enjoy its full benefits. Hearing aids are an extremely effective intervention that can reduce the impact of dementia. Given what is known about these links, it is imperative that the millions of people who could benefit
from hearing aids are encouraged to do so, as they are so important in reducing isolation and increasing quality of life. Hearing aids are nothing to be ashamed of, are not always age related, and can do so much more than just amplify sounds.
So why are people who would benefit from wearing hearing aids not doing so? One suspected reason for this is stigma around hearing loss and hearing aids. A survey has shown that people avoid hearing aids because they are “noticeable”, “embarrassing to wear”, “make you look old”, or “people treat you differently”. So, consider which is more noticeable – wearing a sleek piece of technology in or behind your ear, or constantly asking people to repeat themselves and responding incorrectly because you cannot understand what was said? Not only are today’s hearing aids more discreet, they boast amazing features, such as Bluetooth connectivity, directional microphones, background noise reduction, automatic programming, smartphone compatibility, and incredible processing capabilities, to name but a few!
The first and most important step in overcoming stigma surrounding hearing aids is to accept your hearing loss and the need for treatment. Many of my clients also experience tinnitus as a symptom of their hearing loss – research has shown that the most effective treatment to help with tinnitus is hearing aids. With the advance in technology, we can incorporate tinnitus therapy into the programming which can really help to give relief, even after removing the hearing aids.
It is normal to feel apprehensive about loss of hearing, but it is important to take the next steps. You can either book in for a free 10 minute hearing health screen if you are not sure about the cause of your loss, or you can book in for a full hearing and/or tinnitus assessment. I always use a person-centred approach, as it is definitely not “one size fits all”; I take into account your lifestyle and what you are looking to achieve. You are able to try the hearing aids over a 6 week period during which time I will review your progress to check that this is the right solution for you; if not, we can consider other options. If tinnitus is your only concern, then a tinnitus assessment would give an indication of your best course of treatment, be it a further referral or tinnitus therapy.

Focus on... Litter picking
Rugby Litter Busters was started when local lady Becca Stevenson decided to go out and make a difference in her local area in 2021, having been inspired by seeing someone else litter picking.
After creating a Facebook Group in 2021 the group has gone from strength to strength and now has almost 700 members, and Rugby is certainly looking better for their combined efforts.
You may have seen people litter picking in various parts of Rugby, often with high viz jackets, gloves and a litter grabber – and usually surrounded by blue bin bags, which are supplied by, and then, once full, collected by Rugby Borough Council. The Facebook group is called Rugby Litter Busters and anyone wanting to get help and make a difference is encouraged to join the friendly group and get involved. Group litter picks are organised but most people just go out in their own area where they see a need.
The Facebook group has guidelines on how to get started, health & safety and where to get equipment from etc, as well as details of how to notify the council of full bags that need collecting. Rugby Borough Council supply the bags from their depot on Hunters Lane and also loan out litter pickers/grabbers. Becca collates information on where has been litter picked and how many bags have been collected etc and this year alone the group have collected a whopping 1288 bags, versus the 1583 collected throughout the whole 2022, confirmation that the group has grown, the need is there and the volunteers in Rugby are incredible in giving their time and effort to the cause.
So if you want to help and can spare the odd hour or two, just go to the Facebook Page and all the information is there for you start Wombling!

June Gardening Tasks
I can hardly believe it - the longest day of the year is here! There’s plenty to do in your garden in June. Summer is in full swing (Although Im typing this in May and it seems a little slow in warming up), and the garden is growing at a rapid pace.
Prune Box and Yew
Prune box (Buxus) in late May or early June after all risk of frost has passed. It can then be tidied up in September to ensure a crisp finish over winter. Choose a dry but cloudy day to tackle your hedge or trim your topiary. Avoid pruning in hot sunshine as this can lead to leaf scorch, while damp, humid conditions encourage the spread of box blight.
Remove all the clippings immediately to discourage the spread of blight. If you put down some plastic before you start work, it’s easier to whisk them away when you’re done.
If you’re pruning a hedge, always take the time to string a line to ensure a level and straight finish. You should also check for nesting birds before you begin as it’s illegal to disturb them. If your hedge is tall, get yourself a sturdy set of steps so you can tackle the job safely.
Large, formal hedges should be cut with a slight taper towards the top. This allows more light to get to the bottom of the hedge. Lower hedges, such as in a parterre, should have vertical sides. Either way, do keep stepping back and checking as you clip.
Sunflowers
June is a good time to sow seeds. If you are wondering which flower seeds to sow in June? Sow alstroemeria, achillea, arabis, canterbury bells, coreopsis, erigeron, myosotis and sweet William seeds outdoors. But you may find that if you have small children Giant Sunflowers will be a great hit. Simply Sow the seed thinly direct into finely raked, moist, warm, weed free soil where plants are to flower, 13mm deep (Germination 7-21 days). As the seedlings grow thin in stages to achieve a final spacing of 30-45cm (12-18”). Support the plants as they develop. Well manured soil in a sunny position and kept moist produces the best and tallest flowers.
Bedding Plants
Bedding plants grow quickly and can create a fantastic display of colour. And now that the risk of frost has passed, it’s safe to plant them outside in pots or borders. Petunias, Cosmos, and Fuscias are popular summer bedding plant options. There are certain things that you can do to improve the quality of the blooms on your summer bedding, such as:
Planting them in good quality compost. Multi-purpose compost is usually a good option. Weekly feeds. For best results, opt for a fertiliser that contains high amounts of potassium – such as tomato feed. Giving them protection from slugs or opting for bedding plants that are slug resistant, such as snapdragons, begonias, and geraniums. But be warned if your garden is particularly prone to slugs, then you might want to avoid marigolds, as slugs love them!

Determined to seek revenge, Reggie, Bug and Bug’s pals—Maggie (Isla Fisher; Now You See Me, Wedding Crashers), a smart Australian Shepherd who has been sidelined by her owner’s new puppy, and Hunter (Randall Park; Always Be My Maybe, Aquaman), an anxious Great Dane who’s stressed out by his work as an emotional support animal—together hatch a plan and embark on an epic adventure to help Reggie find his way home
