Editors Letter... Hi Everyone and welcome to the December edition. We have a had both a wonderful and tricky month judging this years entries into the Children’s competition to design our December front cover. The standard has been superb and many were close contenders. I hope you like the one we finally chose. Myself and Catherine are pictured opposite with a selection of the entries - too many to show individually but we have printed a selection of our favourites on pages 30 & 31, along with our fantastic 2nd & 3rd place winners too. I hope you enjoy this festive edition.

nne Catherine & A

Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas and a Happy & prosperous New Year. See you in 2024! Best Wishes,

Anne xx

Children’s Christmas Colouring Competition Thank you to all the parents and carers who allowed their children to enter our competition, and a big, big thank you to all the children for your fantastic designs. Like previous years, we have loved receiving them but it’s been really tough choosing our winner and runners up. We have received over 60 entries this year so we couldn’t possibly show them all but here are a selection of our favourites. We did receive a few after the closing date and also a number that didn’t make it to us as there was insufficient postage on them so please do be careful for future years.

December Gardening Tasks December is a quiet month in the garden, but there are more things to take care of than you might think. With limited daylight hours as we approach the shortest day of the year, this month’s crisp wintery weather can be strikingly beautiful and bitterly cold in equal measure.

Foraging for Wreath Making Get creative and harvest holly with berries for making Christmas garlands and wreaths. You can make your wreath in all sorts of different sizes and styles. Try experimenting with different colours and materials. Keep it simple and natural, or decorate it to be bright and showy. Any extras could be hung elsewhere around the house or gifted to loved ones. Holly is ideal for creating a long-lived wreath. The leaves are robust and waxy which makes them quite resistant to drying out, so they will last a long time. They are tough and not easily damaged when handling. The main challenge is making sure that they don’t damage you with their spines! Do wear a really thick pair of protective gloves to prevent scratches. And of course, holly is the just the start ivy, mistletoe, conifer sprigs, ivy, pine cones. You can include so many other natural materials.flexible stems of shrubs like willow, woven together and tied with wire to make a ring. A wire ring base available in florists or online, which can be padded out with moss. At the end of the Christmas period these materials can then be added to your compost heap.

Protecting Potted Plants

Protect your terracota planted pots will bubble wrap, fleece, hessian or straw. to prevent them cracking with the front or group potted plants together in a sheltered spot in the garden to protect them from the harshest winter weather.

Look after Wildlife Leave out bird feeders and water baths or gently melt the ice on your ponds. This will allow garden birds to get a drink. A healthy garden ecosystem also needs insects so why not make a simple bug hotel with wood and sticks? Fill the gaps with hollow plant stems and pine cones to make a welcoming place for bugs to hide.

Congratulations to last months winner – Mr M Vicarage of Edison Place Films Coming to the Cinema during December “The Bikeriders” is a furious drama following the rise of a fictional 1960s Midwestern motorcycle club through the lives of its members. Inspired by Danny Lyon’s iconic book of photography, “The Bikeriders” immerses you in the look, feel, and sounds of the bare-knuckled, grease-covered subculture of ’60s motorcycle riders. Kathy (Comer), a strong-willed member of the Vandals who’s married to a wild, reckless bikerider named Benny (Butler), recounts the Vandals’ evolution over the course of a decade, beginning as a local club of outsiders united by good times, rumbling bikes, and respect for their strong, steady leader Johnny (Hardy). Over the years, Kathy tries her best to navigate her husband’s untamed nature and his allegiance to Johnny, with whom she feels she must compete for Benny’s attention. BEAT THE CHILL

You may remember we featured Beat the Chill last year. Pat Chittenden a local lady on Woodlands was diagnosed with Parkinsons in 2020. Knitting is the only thing that stops her tremors! Beat the Chill make a range of knitted items that will keep you warm this winter.

Beat the chill uses Aplaca Toft Double knit wool. It’s lovely soft, warm wool and is tested to be 3 times warmer than sheeps wool. By using this wool they are supporting another local business in Dunchurch. They started with the signature wristwarmers but now also do a hat with matching alpaca pompom, scarf, neckwarmer and headbands. The wristwarmers allow you to carry out jobs as the fingers are free, they work by keeping your pulse point in your wrist warm. They come in 2 shades of grey and can be edged in a range of colours. Hats are usually made to match with the pompom being the same colour as the wristwarmers. The other items are also available in the 2 shades of grey.

Parkinsons effects many people each year, there are about 17,300 new diagnoses. It’s a progressive neurological disease. It causes problems in the brain and is the fastest growing neurological condition. Scientists are chasing new treatments and a cure. The organisation raises funds to allow this research to happen.

Ideal Christmas Gift

All profits from Beat the Chill go to Parkinsons, both the local group in Rugby and Parkinsons UK. Over £1,500 has been donated in the last 3 years.

To purchase and support Parkinsons please visit the Facebook page and message www.facebook.com/beatthechill or call Karen on 07792 255 337. Items can also be posted if you would like to send as a gift.
