Editors Letter... Hi Everyone and welcome to the February Edition... I hope 2024 has started off positive for you, and that it continues to be a great year for everyone. I’m feeling smug enough to tell you that I’ve already starting ticking things off my ‘To Do’ list for 2024, not back for 4 weeks into the year! Ok, so they’re not huge things, but they are things I wanted to get done around the house so it feels good to have ticked a couple off already. I just need to keep up the momentum now. It would be amazing to get the whole list ticked off in 2024, that’s never happened in previous years but a girl can dream! One thing I did was read the article from last month by Declutter Dream, our new advertiser, as she gave lots of insight and has tips on her website and FB page too to help with de-cluttering and organising your home.

Anne

and it makes sense that it now follows for cats too. Too many animals are found each year with no chip and no way of finding their owners. Its a basic responsibility when getting a cat or dog and I hope it sees a rise in people getting their animals chipped. Enjoy the article. Enjoy this edition and all it has to offer. Best Wishes,

Anne xx

This month one of our focuses is on pets and the new law coming into play in June this year for Cats to be micro-chipped. Its already law to have your Dog chipped, and has been since 2016

Your Pets and the Law Microchipping your pets – New Law for 2024 Thousands of dogs and cats go missing each year in the UK and many are never reunited with their owners as they have no permanent identification. Microchipping is the safest way to ensure pets can be reunited with their owners as quickly as possible. Did you know that it’s illegal to own a dog and it not be microchipped? And from 10th June 2024 the same law comes into play for Cats. The law for dogs came in on 6th April 2016. Microchipping is the responsible thing to do for your pet. You may think it’s not needed for your dog as they are never out of your home/garden without you but it only takes a second for them to get scared, spooked or curious for them to wander or run off, and without a microchip how can you be re-united. Yes, some cats & dogs wear a collar with contact details on but you would be amazed how many don’t and then sadly never get reunited, putting immense pressure on animal charities not only to care for them but spend time and effort trying to track owners and eventually re-homing them. Many animal charities are run solely on volunteers too and many are overstretched.

Even if you have a cat that’s a house cat and doesn’t go out you still need to be responsible and have them chipped. Again you never know when/if curiosity will get the better of them and they sneak out given the opportunity. Under the new rule for cats, they must be implanted with a microchip by 20 weeks old and owners’ details must be kept up to date. Any owners found not to have their cat microchipped face a fine of up to £500. The average cost of microchipping is between £10-30 and some animal charities offer it free of charge for eligible families. This adds your details to a central database, meaning any vet can scan your pet and re-unite you immediately. So please do the right thing and microchip your pet if you haven’t already.

Delicious Seasonal Recipes Braised Short Ribs

Here’s a list of the ingredients you’ll need to make a mean beef short rib. It’s a pretty short list considering the flavour you’ll get! The only chopping to be done is the onions, carrots, and celery.

Ingredients 2.7 kg beef short ribs (give or take, doesn’t have to be exact) 2 tbsp canola oil 3 medium onions, chopped 3 medium carrots, chopped 2 celery stalks, chopped 30g all-purpose flour 1 tbsp tomato paste 1 bottle of dry red wine 950ml beef stock (preferably low-sodium) a head of garlic, the top sliced off to expose the cloves a big handful of herbs (parsley, thyme, oregano, rosemary; a few sprigs of each) 1 bay leaf coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method Season the ribs with coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper then allow the short ribs to come up to room temperature. Then preheat the oven to 350°F. Heat the oil in a casserole dish over high heat. Brown the short ribs, taking care not to overcrowd your pan (overcrowding will make your ribs steam rather than sear; do in as many batches as necessary to ensure that each rib has a small amount of space around it). Remove the ribs and set them aside.

Seasonal Food This Month

Add the onions, carrots, and celery to pot and cook them for a few minutes, stirring them occasionally, until the onions are soft. Scrape the bottom to release any browned bits from searing the meat. Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and add the tomato paste. Stir it well and cook a few minutes longer, stirring occasionally. Return the short ribs and any accumulated juices to the pot. Pour in the wine and beef stock (you can add a small amount first then scrape up any remaining bits stuck to the bottom of the pot, then add the rest). Add all the herbs to pot along with the garlic. Bring it to a boil, cover, and transfer it to the oven.

Celery, Chicory, Horseradish, Jerusalem,

Cook until the short ribs are tender, about 3 hours (they’re ready when they fall apart when you test them). Transfer the short ribs to a platter or a large serving bowl, and cover them with foil. Strain the sauce into a gravy strainer and remove the fat from surface. Place the gravy into a saucepan, bring it to a boil and keep it at a strong simmer until it’s reduced by 1/3. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve the ribs over mashed potatoes or creamy polenta and top with gravy. If you’re watching your carb intake, mashed cauliflower is also delicious alternative.

Beetroot, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage (Savoy and Spring Green), Carrots, Cauliflower, Celeriac, Artichoke, Kale, Kohlrabi, Leeks, Parsnips, Potatoes (maincrop), Salsify, Shallots, Swede Turnips

February Gardening Tasks February feels like a turning point in the garden. It’s still cold outside, but there are signs of spring’s imminent arrival everywhere you look. Bulbs are slowly emerging from the ground, and the days are getting longer at last.

Lawn Maintenance

Mow if the weather is warm – grass will start to grow at temperatures above 5°C (41°F) – but set the cutting height to its maximum, and only mow when the grass is dry. If you have bulbs planted in your lawn, such as snowdrops and crocuses, they may be starting to come up now, so avoid mowing or walking on those areas. Repair bare patches, especially around lawn edges, using turf cut from other areas of the garden if available. Re-cut lawn edges using a half-moon edging iron or flat-bladed spade, to neaten up the appearance of the garden and save work next season. Also maintain a 7.5cm (3in) ‘gutter’ around the lawn edges to prevent grass spreading into your borders. Avoid walking on a frosty lawn, as this can damage the blades of grass, which go brittle in the cold. It may even leave brown footprints, which can take ages to disappear.

Replant Snowdrops

Snowdrops are a cheery sight in the garden at this time of year. Therefore, you can never have too many so dividing and replanting is a great thing to do in February to increase the clumps. As the flowers begin to fade, dig up the snowdrops and gently tease the bulbs apart. Finally, replant the snowdrops in groups of five.

Cut back ornamental grasses Most grasses will start to have past their best once in February. Therefore, it’s a good time to cut back the dead stems. Cut about 10cm above ground level, but be careful to not to damage the new green shoots that are emerging among them.

Argylle - Release Date: 02 February 2024 The Plot: From the twisted mind of Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman franchise, Kick-Ass) comes Argylle, a razor-witted, reality-bending, globe-encircling spy thriller. Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World franchise) is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books— which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate—begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past. Accompanied by Aiden (Oscar® winner Sam Rockwell), a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur.

Charity Spotlight on...

The Friends of St Cross is calling for more volunteers! Last year The Friends of St Cross delivered a record level of volunteer support for the great team at the Hospital of St Cross and have been asked to expand one of our services and introduce a new one! Doug Jones, Chair of the Friends said “We currently have some 170 volunteers working in 12 teams and have been asked to expand both our Meet and Greet Services and our Befriending Service. We need some 20 volunteers to deliver these and to fill vacancies which inevitably occur from time to time.”

Mayor Rugby, Cllr Maggie O’Rourke, recently presented the Charity with two Special Appreciation Awards and said “I know what a massive difference the work of the Friends makes at St Cross, supporting patients and staff while raising money to purchase medical equipment, so I was delighted to have the opportunity to present the trustees with a Special Appreciation Award.”

“Praise for the work we do comes from all quarters including patients, visitors and the management of University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust which regard us as a key part of Team UHCW.”

If you are interested in joining the team go to the For Volunteers section of our website fsx.org.uk where you will find an Application Pack and detailed Role Descriptions and Guidance. Registered Charity Number 218485
