Hi Everyone and welcome to the October Edition...
and welcome to Autumn too!
Well September has been a jam packed month for me: 2 children back to school and 1 starting at college in Birmingham so new morning routines to get used to. A trip to Rugby Theatre to see Ladies Day with friends - which was superb, I hope some of you also went to see it too. Local theatre here in Rugby is superb from both Rugby Theatre and the Macready Theatre. We are so lucky to have so much amazing shows on our doorstep. I also went to BBC Radio 2 in the Park in Leicester and saw some fabulous bands from the 80’s - Tears for Fears, Deacon Blue, and Texas were my favourites, and finally Birmingham to see Miriam Margoyles and she was absolutely superb - unashamedly herself and wonderful with it. We should all be a bit more Miriam - well maybe not the swearing bit! I think that was the last of my big birthday celebrations from February.

Kreate Training based here in Rugby has been helping & supporting its clients since 2016. Prior to that, its founder, Daniel Knight-Allen worked locally at one of the big-name gyms in the town so you may recognise him.
Daniel originally trained and qualified as a Mechanical Engineer however, he knew his passion was always in fitness and inspiring others. Taking himself to college for a fitness qualification he soon got a job a fitness coach with a well-known gym in Warwick.
Daniel then went on to train and qualify as a Personal Trainer and more recently NLP Master Practitioner & studying strength & conditioning allowing Daniel to help with your mindset as well as fitness goals & performance. A winning combination for any athlete.
Daniel is passionate about ensuring he offers a totally bespoke and individualised plan to help you reach your goal and succeed in what you are training for, whether that be an event or just for yourself.
Maybe you are a runner and want to train up to a specific event? Maybe you play football/ netball/rugby/tennis and want to be in peak condition? Or maybe you want to get back to fitness after some time off/injury etc.?
Whatever your reason, Daniel is there to listen, understand and then create a plan that not
only gets you to your fitness goal but also, and often more importantly, keeps you there. Daniel is more than a traditional personal trainer, he’s more than a fitness coach, he is a superpositive, helpful and understanding physical & mental performance coach.
Daniel offers 1-2-1 sessions, which can be once or twice a week depending on your goals and availability, and to ensure you are in control of your fitness Daniel provides an App which helps you keep on track and supports you when you are not with him. This gives you your individualised plan, including the ability to message/ask questions etc when you are not with him, ensuring you stay focussed and feel supported.
Daniel carries out his coaching and 1-2-1’s in his purpose-built gym where he has all the equipment needed for your specific training and where he does his own training too.
So, if you are looking for motivation & support in your chosen sport field, you want to work on your fitness after a baby/injury/operation, or maybe you want to be in peak shape to avoid injury – whatever your reason, do give Daniel a call. Spooky Spider Energy Balls
Fun nut free and dairy free spider energy balls recipe for kids - great for Halloween party food no need to cook either.
Prep Time - 10 mins
Setting - 10 mins
Ingredients
100 g oats
50 g sesame seeds
50 g desiccated coconut
1 tbs chia seeds
100 g dried apricots, quartered
200 g dried mixed fruit
1 tbs honey (optional)
pretzels
yoghurt covered sunflower seeds OR white chocolate chips
Instructions
Put your ingredients into a food processor or blender in the order shown above (driest ingredients first). Whizz up until everything is finely chopped and well combined. You may need to scrape down the sides a few times before everything is well mixed. Tip the mixture into a bowl, then take handfuls of the mixture and roll into walnut sized balls. You may need to rinse off your hands every now and again during this process as they can get a little sticky. You’ll find it easier to roll smooth balls with slightly damp hands too.
Pop the balls into an airtight container and place in the fridge until ready to eat.
To decorate, break the pretzels into pieces to form the legs (I found that the two largest curved sides of each pretzel worked best) then add 8 ‘legs’ to each energy ball - 4 on each side. Add yoghurt covered sunflower seeds or white chocolate chips for the eyes and serve.

October Gardening Tasks
October is a beautiful month of autumnal colours and first frosts. Crisp, blue-sky days are the perfect time to tidy up and cut back in the garden. If you grow fruit and veg, there’s still plenty to harvest and store for the cold winter months ahead.
Bird Feeding
Winter can be a difficult time for wildlife. Temperatures plummet and food becomes difficult to find. Insect-eating birds turn to alternative foods, some species travel far and wide, and foraging behaviour adapts, but we can lend a helping hand by providing a welcome source of extra food for birds to turn to in leaner times. What to feed Different birds are attracted to certain foods, often reflecting their special adaptations for natural food types. Offer a variety of tempting morsels to maximise your bird table’s wow factor. Goldfinch, siskin, redpoll – smaller seeds like nyjer Greenfinch, tits – sunflower hearts Sparrows, woodpigeon, collared dove – large grains Woodpeckers, tits, starling – fat balls and peanuts. Robin, thrushes – mealworms and live foods. Thrushes, waxwing – windfall fruit.
How to Overwinter Plants
There is information below about over wintering tender plants, whether in a greenhouse, lean to, conservatory or window sill. Wherever you place your plants for the winter there are two main pitfalls to watch out for. Over-watering is one keep plants dry . Plants need only a little water when dormant, water sparingly as too much wet will be fatal. Low light levels is the other problem, do not be tempted to overwinter in a shed or garage, the lack of light will mean the plant cannot thrive.
Overwintering plants on a trestle in a greenhouse. Overwintering plants is a good way of keeping tender, and less hardy plants, from year to year. Which plants you can overwinter depends really on your available frost free space.
If overwintering plants under glass, the main problem is likely to be botrytis, grey mould particularly in a green house. Winter plants need good air circulation to prevent mould. During cold spells it is tempting to wrap up the plants and block off all the draughts, but this will create just the still damp conditions mould enjoys.
To reduce the risk of mould, space plants well apart, avoid their leaves touching and prune if necessary. Water sparingly, open vents and doors as much as possible and raise plants off the ground on a trestle, see image. At the first signs of mould, which forms on leaves as grey fuzzy powder which collapse to the touch remove the plant and any leaves to stop it spreading.
Lawn Care
Clear up fallen leaves regularly to allow light to the grass. On a dry day you can use your lawnmower to make this task easier.
A last mowing can be made this month before leaving your lawn for the winter. Recut any lawn edges if needed. Install lawn edging to make future maintenance easier. Aerate your lawn with a garden fork to avoid waterlogging and compaction over winter.
Rake any thatch from the surface and repair dead patches. There’s still time to lay fresh turf if required.

Films Coming to the Cinema during October
The Great Escaper : Release Date: 6 October The
Plot: In the summer of 2014, Bernard Jordan (Michael Caine) made global headlines. He had staged a “great escape” from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades at the D-Day Landings 70th anniversary. It was a story that captured the imagination of the world as Bernie embodied the defiant, “can-do” spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing. But of course, it wasn’t the whole story. It was an inspirational but sanitised retelling of one man’s need to come to terms with the lasting trauma of war. Bernie’s adventure, spanning a mere 48 hours, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene (Glenda Jackson) – THE GREAT ESCAPER celebrates their enduring love but always with an eye to the lessons we might learn from the Greatest Generation.
Killers Of The Flower Moon: Release Date: 20 October
The Plot: At the turn of the 20th century, oil brought a fortune to the Osage Nation, who became some of the richest people in the world overnight. The wealth of these Native Americans immediately attracted white interlopers, who manipulated, extorted, and stole as much Osage money as they could before resorting to murder. Based on a true story and told through the
improbable romance of Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone), “Killers of the Flower Moon” is an epic western crime saga, where real love crosses paths with unspeakable betrayal. Also starring Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemons, “Killers of the Flower Moon” is directed by Academy Award winner Martin Scorsese from a screenplay by Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese, based on David Grann’s best-selling book.

SCREW LOOSE?
If you died today, what would happen to your child?
No one wants to think about this question. But my experience has taught me how not doing so can have devastating consequences.
With a child under the age of 18 losing a parent every 22 minutes*, this possibility becomes a reality more often than you might think.
Many parents assume their children will automatically fall under the care of extended family or friends when they die. But this isn’t always the case according to the law. As dad-ofone Martin found out.
They could be taken into care
Joanne and Martin were long-term partners. They weren’t married or in a civil partnership, and Martin’s name wasn’t registered on their daughter Beatrice’s birth certificate.
As anyone who’s had a baby knows, life for Martin quickly became busy. So sorting out this paperwork fell off his list of tasks. Then Joanne died in a road accident. She had no Will.
As Martin’s name wasn’t on Beatrice’s birth certificate, and they were not married or in a civil partnership, he didn’t have automatic
Scan me to book an appointment
rights of parental responsibility for his own child according to the law. With no court order, parental responsibility agreement or appointment in Joanne’s Will, Beatrice was taken into care while the courts decided who should look after her. They could be left adrift
Grandparents, godparents or extended family and friends expect to be automatically granted guardianship of a child after parents die. Yet they too have no legal rights according to UK law. If both parents pass away, the individuals named as Testamentary Guardians in their Wills will be granted these rights.
If no one is named and there’s no Child Arrangement Order or Special Guardian Order in place, a child is likely to be placed in foster care when their parents die. Then the courts will decide where they will live and who will pay for their maintenance.
Though a foster carer will protect a child, it could mean a child is separated for weeks or months from those they know and love while their case
goes through the courts.
They could be safe with a loved one To leave no doubt about who will care for a child if the worst happens, mums or dads with parental responsibility need to appoint a guardian in their Will.
Talking through the options with a professional Will writer can help you put the right protection in place based on your relationship status and custody arrangements.
For example, if you are divorced or have annulled your civil partnership with your child’s parent, a Child Arrangement Order may be in place. This will affect how guardians can be appointed. Though there’s plenty to consider, getting the right advice means you’ll have peace of mind that, whatever happens, your child will be cared for by someone you know and love.
To get free, professional advice on how to protect your child in your Will, call us on 01788 712 018 or visit our website: citywidewills.co.uk to book a FREE initial appointment.

Pumpkin Passata
This is a kid (and adult) friendly pasta sauce. The perfect meal for after you've carved pumpkins for halloween and are wondering what to do with the carvings. Scarily easy, cheap and tasty.
Ingredients (serves 4)
Handful or two of diced pumpkin flesh
2 tablespoons of olive oil (or vegetable oil)
2 garlic cloves, sliced
A few parsley stalks, chopped (or basil or both)
1 can of chopped tomatoes
A knob of butter, a tablespoon of crème fraiche or small bit of grated cheese
Sea salt and cracked black pepper
Serve tossed with 500 grams of pasta, any shape you like
Roast the diced pumpkin in the oven until softened, about 30 minutes at 180 celsius.
Heat the oil in a pan and sauté the garlic and chopped herbs until soft and fragrant.
Smash or mash the roast pumpkin, add to the pan.
Add the chopped tomatoes too.
Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes, you can blitz it now with a blender for an extra smooth passata, but you don’t have to.
If you choose, knock in the butter, crème fraiche or grated cheese now.
Serve with pasta.
Check out our treasure trove of other pumpkin recipes on Facebook and Twitter.
