Hi Everyone and welcome to the September Edition...

Well that as a quick month! As you can probably imagine, putting the magazine together every month is a bit like being a mouse on a wheel - a wheel that doesn’t stop. As soon as a magazine is distributed we start on the next one. This time however, I’ve managed to squeeze in a weeks holiday to Cornwall, which was lovely and some much needed quality family time. But that means an even quicker mouse wheel for the remaining 3 weeks of the month to get this new edition out. Add into that, 3 teenagers on school holiday and GCSE results, makes for a chaotic schedule and lots of time juggling. However, 16 years in and I still love it, love the buzz of the deadline, love the chaos, love the juggling.

So please sit back with a cuppa and enjoy this fabulous, packed edition and all it has to offer. We are thrilled to have so many articles supporting local business and good causes as well as fantastic - oh and one apology from me -

sorry about mentioning Santa and Christmas on the front cover - but when you read the article on page 35 I know you will forgive me as its all for a very good cause.

Wishing you all a wonderful September - lets hope the summer will arrive this month too as it seems to be running very late this year....

Best Wishes,

Deadline is the 20th of the month for inclusion into the following months edition. Next Deadline: 20th September for the October Edition

Mike Stead qualified as an accountant over 30 years ago, working in industry, where he was a Finance Director for over 25 years and, more recently, a Managing Director. In 2020, Mike decided he wanted a change, so took early retirement, but after just a year, he had a change of mind. “After some time off, for what should have been retirement I realised I needed & wanted a new challenge, somewhere I could use my skills and experience that would give me a real sense of job satisfaction and a feeling that I was truly helping people,” said Mike. Mike wanted to work with small business owners and help them succeed. He wanted to work with a known small business expert, and after doing a lot of market research and checking out numerous businesses he chose TaxAssist Accountants. TaxAssist who were established back in 1995 only work with small businesses, and have a nationwide coverage helping over 150,000 people every year. This really appealed to Mike as he too was keen to support small, local businesses.

Mike then bought and took over the Rugby branch of TaxAssist, established over 20 years earlier, providing accounting, tax and payroll services to limited companies, partnerships, sole traders and self-assessments.

TaxAssist Rugby offer more, by collaborating with other local service providers such as IFA and solicitors so providing a true one stop shop.

Mike is keen for the business to be part of the community of Rugby, providing services to all in the town and to help with this they have recently moved into new premises within the town centre at 66 Church St, Rugby, opposite HSBC. Their door is always open and anyone wanting to pop in to say hello, welcome to the town, or wanting information about their services would be very welcome. The Lord Mayor of Rugby will be opening the new shop on Thursday 21st September 4pm to 6pm, all are welcome.

Delicious Seasonal Recipes

Chicken Casserole with Leeks and Mushrooms

Nothing fancy, nothing complicated, just good fresh ingredients cooked simply to develop their flavours and allow all the components to shine. The result: a warm and comforting casserole, where the long slow cooking and caramelisation of the chicken and vegetables, add richness and depth. Wonderful with potatoes, (mash, roast or jacket) as well as cooked rice or even lentils. Servings: 4

Ingredients

2 – 3 tablespoons olive oil, as required

650g skinless, boneless chicken breast or thigh meat

1 onion, peeled and chopped

2 sticks celery, trimmed and thinly sliced

200g mushrooms, quartered

4 sprigs of fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves

2 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely chopped or crushed

4 medium carrots, peeled, if necessary, sliced on an angle, roughly 1 – 1½ cms thick

22g/2 tablespoons plain/all-purpose flour

500ml chicken stock – homemade, or use a stock cube

2 medium leeks, trimmed, washed well and sliced

½ teaspoon fine salt, or to taste

½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

½ lemon

3 – 4 tablespoons double/heavy cream, to taste fresh parsley , chopped, to garnish

Method

Preheat oven to fan 180°C/200°C/400°F/Gas 6.

Chop the chicken – size to suit your taste. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a cast iron casserole over a moderately hot temperature and brown the chicken, in batches. Add more oil as necessary and remove the chicken from the pan as and when they are browned on both sides. After you have cooked the chicken, there will hopefully be lots of sticky bits on the base of the pan which will lift off when you add the vegetables. These sticky bits add lots of flavour.

Pour extra oil into the pan, if necessary, and add the chopped onion and celery. Cook for 5 minutes over a moderate heat, until softened and slightly caramelised. Stir from time to time.

Add the mushrooms and thyme and cook for a further 5 minutes, stirring from time to time.

Add garlic and carrots and cook for another minute, or until the garlic is aromatic. Stir in the flour, salt and pepper thoroughly and pour in the stock. Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring.

Return the chicken to the pan and add the leeks.

Remove the pips from the lemon and squeeze over the juice. Tuck the lemon shell into the casserole. Cook, covered, in a preheated oven for 40 minutes, or cook gently on the hob, lid on, for 40 minutes.

Remove the lemon shell and any whole sprigs of thyme and stir in the fresh cream. Serve sprinkled with chopped parsley. Delicious with potatoes, (mash, roast or jacket) cooked rice or even lentils.

September Gardening Tasks

September brings the new season of Autumn and a variety of gardening tasks that need undertaking. Autumn is one of the most important times of year to care for your lawn. After the warm summer and in preparation for an unpredictable winter, giving your lawn some attention now will ensure your grass is healthy over the winter months.

Planting Bulbs

Enjoy a bounty of bloom in your garden next year by planting spring-flowering bulbs now. Tulips, daffodils, crocus, hyacinths, and other early-bird bloomers can be massed in beds by themselves or tucked in between established perennials and shrubs. Planting bulbs is easy: Just dig individual holes (8 inches deep for large bulbs like daffodils, 4 inches deep for smaller bulbs such as crocus), drop the bulb in, and cover with soil. Or, dig one large hole and toss in a dozen or more bulbs. Planted this way, they’ll pop up in one impressive drift of color.

Improve Your Soil

Autumn is a great time to improve the soil in your September garden. After you remove dead and dying vegetables and flowers, spread a 2- to 3-inch-deep layer of rotted manure or compost over the surface of the soil. Spade or gardenfolk it into the top several inches of soil and rake smooth. If the area had been mulched previously, just spread the soil amendments over the mulch and then rototill everything at the same time. In smaller beds, use a garden fork to turn the soil.

Lawn Care

Now is a good time to scarify and aerate the lawn, as the lawn still has time to recover before the cold sets in. Aeration can also help the lawn once more rainfall starts, as it can prevent waterlogging on the lawn. Your local lawn care can advise you if your lawn needs any extra treatments or care during this month, to help it prepare for the colder months ahead.

Rugby Rokeby Lions Club CIO Santa

For generations Santa has been seen travelling the streets of Rugby and parked outside shops at weekends during December much to the delight of the younger members of our community.

How long this will continue Lions cannot guarantee as the members of the club are now more senior it is more difficult for them to walk the routes supporting the sleigh.

All the monies raised by the Lions is returned back to the people of Rugby in supporting hardship, young people’s projects, senior citizens and other worthwhile causes and charities. These will disappear if we are unable to get the support we need.

We are asking if you have just two hours to give during December to help collect or you have a car with a tow bar and could pull the sleigh then this event will certainly continue.

THE FUTURE OF SANTA IN RUGBY IS DOWN TO YOUR GENEROSITY AND SUPPORT.
