RGM launches PIPA campaign: "No Ukem, a Gowtu no war a Nowtu"

"Pit Intrusion is a dangerous acvity that in the past and recently has resulted in several incidents involving serious injuries and deaths. Unfortunately, the most recent shoong incident that occurred in April in Nieuw Koffiekamp resulted in injuries and the loss of another young Surinamese cizen. Any injury or death is a tragedy that we as a company deeply regret." This said Victor Wu, General Manager (GM) of Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines during the launch of the Pit Intrusion Public Awareness (PIPA) campaign at Brokopondo Centrum on May 12, 2023. During the launch, a Job Fair was also organized where companies and agencies of the local communies demonstrated what products and services they offer. The launch of the campaign concluded with a movaonal session for the students of the LBO and MULO schools in the Brokopondo district.

In addion to the RGM leaders and students and teachers from the various MULO, LBO, and GLO schools, the district commissioner of Brokopondo, Ludwig Mendelzoon, and the Minister of Educaon, Science, and Culture, Henri Ori were also present.

Victor further said that despite collaboraons with the government, the problem with ukemmen is sll a serious issue. Therefore, according to the GM, it was necessary to launch an awareness program to make the community aware of the consequences of Pit Intrusion. "We

will target not only the ukemmen, but also their peers, parents, and others. We will use various media, such as this Job Fair, movaonal sessions for the youth of Brokopondo, songs composed by wellknown Surinamese arsts, and radio and television interviews and announcements, to convey this message to the public."

Minister Ori spoke mainly to the youth present during his speech. He said the Job Faire was to encourage young people's interest, so they know what professions they want to pursue in the future, but that Rosebel Gold Mines also offers plenty of job opportunies. "What do you want to be later on? An Engineer? There are so many

posions within Zijin. Many Surinamese find work at Zijin." The minister, therefore, believes that educaon in Brokopondo should focus more on supporng RGM's business processes, as well as other sectors such as tourism and agriculture. "There will be a huge number of posions and jobs coming up in the future and the youth of this area need to be inspired to go to school and connue their studies," he said.

The DC asked students to parcipate in acvies, including the Job Fair and the movaonal session. He said they are the future of Brokopondo and can be part of a prosperous future in Brokopondo.

Another highlight of the day was the launch of songs to the specially composed PIPA rhythm, where the slogan "No Ukem, a Gowtu no war a Nowtu" was consistently the theme. The arsts Rise-L and Faya Shule performed their songs live on stage, aer which the songs of both gentlemen and the song of Enver were played repeatedly during the fair as well as making the visitors present dance along to the catchy rhythm.

Replacement crusher crucial for gold

Without a crusher, our Process Plant or Mill could be closed. To find the gold-bearing ore, it is necessary to dig deeper. And the deeper we dig, the harder the rock. To process this type of rock, it must first be crushed into small rocks. The crusher plays an important role here. This past March, the primary crusher was shut down to replace a very important part, the mantle. We spoke with Gordon Nagi, Mill Maintenance General Foreman, and he told us all about the work in detail.

"We have parts that wear out quickly and therefore need to be replaced aer a certain amount of me," Gordon explained. These

include the mantle, a part that pushes the rocks against the crusher wall through rotaonal movements, crushing the rocks into small pieces. When the mantle wears out, it can no longer do its job properly and cannot break down the rocks into the desired size. "We were forced to stop everything to replace the mantle," he said.

The part had to be changed as soon as possible. According to Gordon, it did, within the planned 12 hours. Because every me the crusher plant shuts down, it means producon loss. To absorb this loss, the inventory stockpile is refilled to maintain the hard rock supply to the process plant.

According to Gordon, the mantle will be replaced again aer about two months but Rosebel Gold Mines has the experse to do this work independently and as quickly as possible. There are plans to modernize the primary crusher, the General Foreman let us know. A more modern crusher not only works more efficiently but can also process the amount of hard rock faster. More processing ulmately means higher producon. Without a good-performing crusher, producon will not be achieved.

In the spotlight: Drill & Blast

To familiarize everyone with the departments within RGM, we introduce a different department in each edion. In this edion, we highlight the Drill & Blast department. Mengalvio van Throo, Drill & Blast Assistant Superintendent tells us all about the purpose of his department.

What are the dues/tasks of the Drill & Blast department?

Drilling and blasng is one of the first and most important steps in the mining process. Our main goal is to drill holes for sampling and blast those holes with the controlled use of explosives to break rocks for excavaon.

• The Drilling team is responsible for delivering quality drilled holes from where the samples are taken for ore and waste determinaon. Several colleagues from the Drilling team are responsible for the tools that are stored at the Drill Bitshop and need to be repaired. Repairs include, repairs to drill hammers, sharpening of drill bits, and other materials needed for drilling.

• The Blasng team is responsible for the safe and efficient use of explosives. The blasng team ensures that the drilled holes are loaded with explosives to blast those holes in such a way that they produce a good fragmentaon result for the excavators to mine. Due to the risk of explosives, the blasng team is well-trained and qualified to use explosives and explosive accessories. Colleagues on the blasng team are authorized to fabricate explosives in the Emulsion Plant. At the Emulsion Plant, Emulsion is manufactured from raw materials on specific sequences, high temperatures and raos.

How many employees does the department have?

The department consists of 126 employees led by Assistant

Superintendent Mengalvio van Throo.

How long has the department been in operaon and what division does it fall under?

The department has been in operaon since the company was established and falls under the Mine Operaons division.

What are the working hours of the department?

We work both day and night shis from 7 to 7.

What are the highlights since the establishment of the department? The Drill and Blast department does everything itself, from drilling, explosives producon to blasts. Our Emulsion Plant is large and a highly technical facility that produces emulsion from 5 different raw materials at specific tempe-ratures, raos, mixtures, and ming.

What is the moo/slogan of Drill & Blast?

Drill & Blast, you need to do it right the first me because you only have one opportunity!

Shaquille Pikieno:

dream is to represent Suriname at the Olympics”

Anyone who regularly runs on the running tracks at Camp David's outdoor gym is sure to see Shaquille Pikieno, E/I Technician Mill Electrical (CCC H. Pansa & Sons). A young guy who zooms past you every me. Those of us who regularly follow sports news will also have come across his name.

For example, on January 8, 2023, Shaquille won the 10km run during the Bigi Broki Waka. Shaquille finished in 3rd place during the 10km Telesur

Wrokoman Dei on May 1, 2023

On May 20, during the Yellow Birds 5km run and the Jungle Run on June 25 he finished in second place. We spoke briefly with this sprinng talent in the Internal Communicaon office.

The beginning

"I started running when I was 15 ears old", explains 25-year-old Shaquille. It started as a form of relaxaon. "At that age I was playing soccer, but I couldn't really enjoy it. I wasn't sweang. So I started running and was able to sweat without geng an injury."

Unl he was 19, it was just running to relax. "But friends and acquaintances started asking me to join races all the me. I decided to enter the Hakrinbank 10 km run on Sept. 1, 2018, and finished in 7th place," the runner says disgruntled. "I wanted to win and therefore processed this loss

only aer a week and aer everyone told me that seventh place is not bad for the first me."

But luck did not stay far. In 2018, he finished first at the Havenbeheer 5km fast run. His confidence grew and as of 2019, Shaquille is among Suriname's elite runners. He now only has to compete against the best longdistance runner, Janiek Pomba.

Training

Shaquille trains every aernoon on site at the running track. If it doesn't get too dark and if he is early at the track, he runs 10 kilometers. "If possible, it would be good to send athletes on the day shi off work a half hour earlier. If not, the track should be lightened."

Future plans

The Mill contractor dreams of being able to represent Suriname abroad. "In parcular the Olympics," he says. "I will therefore connue to train hard and adjust my diet."

Message

Shaquille: "Exercising sports is good for your health and it reduces stress. If you plan to run, don't let it stop at daydreaming , but take the first step, otherwise you'll never start."

Henk Ost decorated by President Santokhi

Henk Ost, Network Administrator, was awarded by President Chandrikapersad Santokhi on May 14, 2023, in connecon with World Blood Donor Day. Henk has donated blood more than 90 mes and was therefore decorated Officer in the Honorary Order of the Yellow Star.

Henk explains that he started donang blood in 2002. He wanted to give something back to the community, and donang blood to save lives seemed like the best way for him. "I know that people need blood and that the Blood Donaon Services do not have enough blood," he says.

According to the Network Administrator, giving blood is volunteer work and should be done out of pure love. "What is done for free? You don't get paid and if you or your family

ever are in need of blood, it is not guaranteed. That is why it is important that as many people as possible donate blood so that there is no shortage," Henk said.

For more informaon on donang blood, see the Suriname Red Cross website by clicking here.

Chastron Pansa: I thank the RGM doctors that I’m sll alive

It seemed like a story without an end. Chastron Pansa, House Aendant, was geng skinny, feeling sicker and sicker, and finally weighed only 39 kg. Chastron was severely ill! Aer months and several treatments, it became hopeless.

"One could not find anything!", Chastron explains. He had a seizure during a weekend in July 2021 and could not breathe. Eventually, his fellow residents managed to bring him back to consciousness. Not long aer, he received a call from an RGM doctor asking him to visit the Paramaribo Medical Team (PMT) clinic at Marthastraat. He did and his life changed.

Upon arrival at the PMT, there was an immediate intervenon. "Doctors Evert and Sharon saw that I was severely ill and immediately referred me to specialist Bansi at the AZP. From then on, acon was taken and eventually, I was told what was wrong with me."

Chastron, who worked only the night shi for 11 years, no longer had to. "Kande dat siki mi tu," he says in Sranan Tongo (Maybe that made me

sick). Currently, on the doctor's advice, he works nine hours and only during the day shi. Looking back, he is glad he reached out to the PMT. "I am grateful to them. Since the RGM doctors started counseling me, my health has improved. Recently, Doctor Evert said to me, ‘Pansa a’e go. Mi’e syi (Pansa you are doing well. I see! )'. And things are indeed moving in the right direcon now. My skin has recovered, and my face is no longer pale."

Like many colleagues, the House Aendant also had doubts about the RGM doctors. "At first I too thought they wanted to interfere in my private life, but I have realized that it is good for the RGM doctors to be aware of my medical condion. This policy is just right. My message to all RGM employees is to visit the PMT if something is going on. Cooperate! I have seen the advantages."

Chastron is sll under treatment, but he is smiling again and enjoying life.

Procedure Sick Leave

Explained in 5 simple steps

1 2 3 4 5

Employees or Contractors who cannot report to work due to illness must first notify their Supervisor of their absence within 24 hours before the start of their shift.

Simultaneously, RGM employees must contact the Paramaribo Medical Team (PMT) by phone at 7280180 between 08:00 am - 2:00 pm

Within <3 days, RGM Employees must submit their sick leave to the PMT or site clinic. This can be done in person or via WhatsApp 7240107.

PMT will contact the employee within a day to schedule a medical evaluation with an RGM doctor. The evaluation can be done by phone or in person at the RGM clinic in Paramaribo.

Based on the medical evaluation of the RGM employee and the submitted Sick Leave letter, the PMT/RGM physician will advise on the sick leave and possible follow up.

Sick for more than 3 days? Then you must also submit a Fit-To-Work before being allowed back on the work floor.

Mill two years LTA-free

On Wednesday, July 5, the Mill department celebrated that on March 14, 2023, they had not recorded a Lost Time Accident (LTA) for 2 years. This special milestone obviously had to be celebrated in an appropriate way and this happened at the Pina Hut.

“Today is a great day and I am happy to be part of this team,” began

Johnson Huang, Mill Manager, with his congratulatory message. He told his audience that in addion to 2 years LTA-free, the Mill has also been able to cut roughly US$3 million from its budget while reducing power consumpon by 20%. "We were able to do all this thanks to the contribuons of our Mill teams," Johnson said.

The opportunity was taken to introduce the new addions to the Mill supervision team to those in aendance. Ersel Özberk, Mechanical Maintenance Superintendent, Darien Derrell, Chief plant Engineer, and Ruben Alvarado, Superintendent Projects, were allowed to personally share what they think of their new challenge at RGM.

New corporate enty, new uniform

Aer each acquision, not only is the logo changed but also the company branding. Within the Zijin culture, it is desirable that all employees wear the same type of uniform on site, obviously adapted to the work environment. In this context, it was also decided to purchase new uniforms at Rosebel Gold Mines.

Aer a short but thorough pilot project, in which some employees from the Health & Safety, Engineering, Mill, and Internal Communicaons departments tested the quality of the clothing, all department heads were asked to send their quanes and suggesons for the workplacebased uniforms of their teamsto the

HR and Inventory Control departments. The supplier now has all the informaon, and the uniforms are expected to be available by the end of October this year.

All employees on site will receive two sets (shirts + pants) of Zijinbranded uniforms at inial distribuon. Aer this purchase, the uniforms will be made available as stock items.
