1938 and the threat of war loomed. The Government Code and Cypher School, then based in London, needed a safer home where its intelligence work could carry on unhindered by enemy air attacks. Bletchley Park was eminently suitable. Today it is a treasured heritage site. Visitors can explore some of the iconic WW2 code breaking huts and blocks and marvel at the astonishing achievements of the code breakers whose work is said to have helped shorten the war by two years. The landscape has been returned to its 1940’s appearance enabling visitors to step back in time to the scenery the Codebreakers would have seen. A range of hot and cold food is available on site. Sissinghurst’s garden was created in the 1930s by poet Vita Sackville-West and her author husband Harold Nicolson. The garden is designed as a series of ‘rooms’, each with a different NEW character of colour and/or theme, the walls being high clipped hedges and many pink brick walls. The rooms and ‘doors’ are so arranged that, as one enjoys the beauty in a given room, one suddenly discovers a new vista into another part of the garden, making a walk a series of discoveries that keeps leading one into yet another area of the garden. Sissinghurst has a restaurant and coffee shop.
