elcome to our Programme of Coach Excursions for the Spring and Summer 2016. We hope you will enjoy reading through the varied selection of trips that have been carefully planned for this season and that you will want to book some days out with us soon. The Roadmark team have been working hard to produce an innovative programme featuring new and unusual destinations, whilst repeating trips that we know are traditional favourites with our customers. This year celebrates the 90th birthday of Her Majesty The Queen and we have arranged visits to Buckingham Palace, which includes a special exhibition ‘Fashioning a Reign’, and also a trip to the royal retreat of Sandringham in Norfolk. We have also catered for the many of you interested in visiting stately homes and gardens, including many National Trust properties, and you will find cruises on the River Thames and other beautiful waterways together with railway journeys and lunches and cream tea excursions. Coach travel is a friendly and companionable way to see places and meet friends old and new. It is also environmentally acceptable and our modern, luxury coaches have low emissions and are equipped with the latest safety features. On some longer trips complimentary hot drinks are served and both our coaches have toilet facilities. We endeavour to provide as much choice as possible when planning our trips so as to cater for a wide range of interests. Many people enjoy simply looking at the scenery from a comfortable seat high in the coach and there is a selection of countryside tours and mystery drives. We also include some continental day trips to Bruges and Le Touquet. We believe our excursions represent excellent value for money and our team of professional drivers look forward to welcoming you on board very soon. David Coster Managing Director TO BOOK ANY OF THE DAY TRIPS OR HOLIDAYS IN THIS BROCHURE TELEPHONE US ON 01903 741233

Please ensure that the excursion you have chosen picks up at the points you require as not all excursions pick up in every town or village. At the time of booking we will confirm the seat number we have reserved for you – the seating plan opposite shows where your seat is located on the coach. You will be given a reference number for each trip booked. We ask that you send payment to us within seven days, making cheques payable to ‘Roadmark Travel Ltd’, and write the reference number on the back of the cheque. Please note that we have a strict NO SMOKING policy on all coaches, this includes electronic cigarattes.

THRIPLOW DAFFODIL WEEKEND a celebration of Spring

We are delighted, once again, to visit the village of Thriplow for the Annual ‘Daffodil Weekend’ - a tradition started in 1969 in an attempt to raise money for repairing the Church. Among the displays and entertainment are Heavy Horses, Sheep Dogs, Birds of Prey and a Vintage Vehicle display. There is no shortage of things to eat, either in the village pub or from one of the stalls selling a range of hot and cold food. Everyone in Thriplow turns out to support the event and to show off their delightful village and its thousands of golden daffodils.

But as war looms something more is required to boost morale and box office… When Mrs Henderson comes up with the idea of The Windmill Girls – glamorous young women posing as nude statues – audiences flock. Wells is a pretty and thriving market town nestled at the foot of the Mendip Hills. The name Wells derives from the three wells dedicated to Saint Andrew, one in the market place and two within the grounds of the Bishop’s Palace and Cathedral. Wells is the smallest Cathedral city in England. The Mute Swans in the moat at the Bishops Palace have for centuries been trained to ring bells via strings attached to them to beg for food. Two swans which were given to the bishop by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006, are still able to ring for lunch! There are plenty of cafes and restaurants and we will allow about 4 hours in the city.

This is still one of Roadmark’s most popular excursions and we are pleased to offer it again in 2016. The MV Princess Pocahontas is operated by Freemen of the River Thames who have spent their working lives on this truly historic waterway. The crew’s knowledge of the Thames and its riverside areas will provide you with a fascinating and rewarding trip. We join Pocahontas in Gravesend and travel upriver passing Tilbury Docks, under the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge and through the remarkable engineering feat of the Thames Barrier. You will see Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament before the boat turns and heads downstream back to Gravesend to rejoin the coach for the homeward journey. The boat has a fully-stocked bar on board, and we include a light buffet lunch during the cruise. We are also running this excursion on 2nd June with alternative pick up points.

A former priory in the village of Lode, about 5 miles north-east of Cambridge, Anglesey Abbey is a Jacobean-style house set in 98 acres of landscaped grounds. After falling into disrepair the house was bought by the future Lord Fairhaven in the 1920s who then went about transforming the property into his first home. Wanting to inspire and surprise visitors, he created a spectacular garden with planting for all seasons and a cosy house in which to entertain. Life revolved around horse racing and shooting, and guests enjoyed 1930s luxury. In the grounds you can see the Lode Mill, restored in 1982 and still producing flour. You can purchase lunch in the Redwoods Restaurant.

We visit COLCHESTER, the oldest recorded town in Britain. It began life as the capital city of “Old King Cole” and in AD 49-50 Claudius built a great Roman city. Queen Boadica and the Iceni sacked it in AD60. The Normans gave it a great castle. Cromwell’s army besieged the town in 1648. The main streets still follow the Roman plan and parts of the Roman Walls remain. The Norman Castle Keep is the largest in Britain and is open to visitors. Colchester is a fascinating place to visit, with shops, museums and art galleries, and beautiful parks and gardens.

It is located in a tranquil setting on an island and there are 500 acres of beautiful parkland together with excellent restaurant facilities. As well as the castle, attractions include the Maze & Underground Grotto, the Bird of Prey Centre, the Dog Collar Museum and an exhibition commemorating the Battle of Agincourt. We time our visit to see the Festival of Flowers, during which the castle rooms are transformed into works of art using flowers by international and award winning florists and floral designers.

THE TOWER OF LONDON

Join a Yeoman Warder Tour and be entertained by tales from the Tower - pain and passion, treachery and torture, all delivered with a swagger and a smile ! The Crown Jewels, which are part of the Royal Collection, are displayed to millions of visitors every year, in the Tower of London. The Jewel House at the Tower has been used for the secure storage of the precious ceremonial objects, commonly known as the ‘Crown Jewels’, since the early 14th century, when Westminster Abbey (the alternative store) was found to be unsafe. Although attempts have been made to steal the Crown Jewels from the Tower, notably by Colonel Blood in 1671, none have succeeded. The present display of the Crown Jewels was opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1994. There are a number of places to find refreshments in the Tower itself or in the surrounding area. Due to the nature of the building this excursion is unsuitable for people with mobility problems.

In addition to numerous formal and informal decorative gardens, several glasshouses and an extensive arboretum, it includes small scale “model gardens” which are intended to show visitors what they can achieve in their own gardens, and a trials field where new cultivars are assessed.
