The Tower of London

Join a Yeoman Warder Tour and be entertained by tales from the Tower – pain and passion, treachery and torture, all delivered with a swagger and a smile ! The Crown Jewels, which are part of the Royal Collection, are displayed to millions of visitors every year, in the Tower of London. The Jewel House at the Tower has been used for the secure storage of the precious ceremonial objects, commonly known as the ‘Crown Jewels’, since the early 14th century, when Westminster Abbey (the alternative store) was found to be unsafe. Although attempts have been made to steal the Crown Jewels from the Tower, notably by Colonel Blood in 1671, none have succeeded. The present display of the Crown Jewels was opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1994. There are a number of places to find refreshments in the Tower itself or in the surrounding area. Due to the nature of the building this excursion is unsuitable for people with mobility problems.

The Duke of Wellington held the post for 23 years and enjoyed his time spent at the Castle and in recent years Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother made regular visits to the castle. The armchair in which Wellington died and an original pair of 'Wellington boots' along with some of the rooms used by the Queen Mother are among the highlights. Always a popular destination, Bletchley Park was home, from 1938, to the British Government's Code and Cypher School. Originally based in London it was moved to Buckinghamshire under a cloak of secrecy. Today it is a treasured heritage site. Visitors can explore some of the iconic WW2 code breaking huts and blocks and marvel at the astonishing achievements of the code breakers whose work is said to have helped shorten the war by two years. The landscape has been returned to its 1940's appearance enabling visitors to step back © Flickr – Jon Konrath in time to the scenery the Codebreakers would have seen. Admission to the National Museum of Computing, which shares the Bletchley site is at additional cost, payable locally. A range of hot and cold food is available on site.

St Paul's Cathedral with a guided tour

One of London's most iconic landmarks, St Paul's occupies a site overlooking the City of London that has had a Cathedral since 604AD. The current Cathedral – the fourth to occupy this site – was designed by the court architect Sir Christopher Wren and built between 1675 and 1710 after its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. Your visit includes one of the Cathedral's own easy to use Multimedia guides, which contain a wealth of information. There is a refectory restaurant in the Crypt, serving a selection of hot dishes, open sandwiches, salads and tempting desserts. Alternatively there are many cafes, restaurants and pubs in the immediate vicinity of the Cathedral. Due to the nature of the building many of the galleries are accessed by steep stone staircases making them unsuitable for people with mobility problems, however for those unable to make the climb the Multimedia guides provide virtual tours.

Thriplow Daffodils a celebration of Spring

We are delighted, once again, to visit the village of Thriplow for the Annual 'Daffodil Weekend' – a tradition started in 1969 in an attempt to raise money for repairing the Church. Many of the houses in the Village open their gardens, and there are Arts and Craft stalls and demonstrations. There is music, Morris dancing and bell ringing to enjoy. Among the displays and entertainment are Heavy Horses, Sheep Dogs, Birds of Prey and a Vintage Vehicle display. There is no shortage of things to eat, either in the village pub or from one of the stalls selling a range of hot and cold food. Everyone in Thriplow turns out to support the event and to show off their delightful village and its thousands of golden daffodils.

The Museum of London Docklands/Canary Wharf

The Museum of London Docklands opened in 2003 occupying a Grade 1 Listed 19th century sugar warehouse built in 1802. Situated on the Isle of Dogs just a short walk from Canary Wharf and spread over 5 floors, it tells the fascinating history of the River Thames and the growth of the Docklands. Thousands of objects and pictures, many rescued © Flickr – KotomiCreations during the 1970s and 1980s when containerisation and competition forced London's port to move downstream. Trace the area's history, from the arrival of the Romans to the rise of Canary Wharf. Historic photographs and printed material from the Port of London Authority Archive show the vast scale of the docks at the turn of the century and workshop reconstructions illustrate the many traditional port trades, now mostly lost. Canary Wharf, with its many shops, restaurants and cafes is a short distance away. Food & refreshments are available on site or at nearby Canary Wharf. Please note that on Sundays the majority of shops in Canary Wharf do not open until 12noon.

Eastbourne

Eastbourne is consistently one of Roadmark's most popular destinations for a day out. There is still an air of elegance about Eastbourne – its gracious buildings, avenues and hotels owe their creation to © Flickr – grassrootsgroundswell the 7th Duke of Devonshire who designed the resort in 1834. The long esplanade overlooks colourful gardens and there are plenty of places to sit and relax. Stroll on the Pier, take a bus up to Beachy Head, or visit the town centre shops – the choice is yours.

Basildon Park Situated close to Reading, Basildon Park is the perfect English Country House. Originally built towards the end of the 18th Century it was rescued and lovingly restored to its former grandeur by Lord and Lady Illiffe in the 1950s filling the house with beautiful paintings, textiles and furniture. Today the house is owned by the National Trust and may be familiar to fans of Downton Abbey as the location for the London home of the Crawley family. The ground floor of the house is home to the Tea Room which sells a range of hot and cold food.

NEW

at The Theatre Royal Drury Lane

42nd Street is a classic backstage musical that follows famed director Julian Marsh as he attempts to put on a brand new musical production during the height of the Great Depression. Peggy Sawyer, an unknown chorus girl, gets her big break and goes out on the stage a "youngster" and comes back a "star". With a classic score of musical theatre standards including "We're in the Money", "Lullaby of Broadway", "42nd Street" and "About a Quarter to Nine", this heart-warming musical provides exceptional tap routines and classic comedy. Seats at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane will be in either The Stalls or Royal Circle – please check at time of booking. There will be time to find lunch around the Covent Garden area prior to the 2.30pm performance.
