Welcome 2017 will be Roadmark Travel’s 29th year, and we are delighted to offer our largest ever selection of coach holidays. You will see from the map opposite that there is a wide choice of new destinations, as well as tours that have proved popular with our passengers in the past.

All-Inclusive Tyrolean Winter Wonderland

PASSPORT REQUIRED

Sunday 15th January for 8 days New Tour

Some coach companies overlook the fact that the journey to and from your destination is an important part of the holiday. Most of our tours include Door-to-Door service*, and we do not have lengthy pick-up routes. This means that the first and last days can often be made more interesting, avoiding the need to stop at expensive motorway service areas. On our ‘Hidden Wonders of France’ tour, for example, we include a visit to the Château de Chambord in the Loire Valley on the way home. And don’t forget that if you belong to The National Trust you will benefit from a reduced price on some tours. We hope that you will find something you like. If you wish to make a booking, or require further details about any of the holidays in this brochure, just call and speak to one of our friendly team.

ARE YOU EAGLE-EYED?

DAY 2 Through Bavaria, over the Fern Pass and along the Inn Valley to the Clubhotel Gotzens (3*) near Innsbruck, where a welcome drink awaits.

In our 2016 Holiday Brochure we stated that ‘Joan of Arc was buried alive at the stake’. Hilary Tyler of Southwater was the first to spot this deliberate mistake, closely followed by Peter & Edna Halestrap, John Goodfellow, Christine Burton and Peter Gannaway. Well done to all these eagle-eyed customers. We have hidden another falsehood somewhere in the pages of this brochure. The mistake this year is a geographical one, and there is a prize waiting for the first person to tell us what it is. Remember that there is only one such error – any others are purely accidental – and you must identify the correct one to win.

Your Roadmark Holiday features… 䡲 Dinner, bed and breakfast at all hotels (unless stated) 䡲 Door-to-door service* 䡲 A friendly, professional and courteous driver (two drivers on most continental holidays) 䡲 Air-conditioned touring coach with the latest safety features 䡲 On-board toilet for peace of mind 䡲 A programme of excursions, with admissions normally included 䡲 Reductions for National Trust members on some tours *Door-to-Door service is included in the holiday cost providing that the Postcode of the pick-up address is listed as one of our ‘TAXI INCLUDED POSTCODES’ on the reverse of the booking form.

DAY 3 Ascent by one of Austria’s oldest mountain railways to the Mutteralm with light lunch included. From the top there are magnificent views of the Inn Valley. This afternoon enjoy a snowshoe hike and after dinner take part in Roadmark’s bowling night. DAY 4 This morning we take a guided tour of Innsbruck to see the famous Golden Roof. We visit the Bergisel Ski Jump and take the inclined elevator to the top of the tower for a breathtaking panoramic view of Innsbruck and the Nordkette Mountains. This afternoon we take you on a horse-drawn sleigh ride to the Postkutscherhof in Axams where we will enjoy coffee and cake to round off the day.

New Tour

© VisitEngland - VisitLeicester

Following a successful first visit to The Inn on the Lake in 2016, we are delighted to be returning to this stylish Hotel on Ullswater, surrounded by some of the finest views in the Lakes. While we may be a little late to enjoy the ‘hosts of golden daffodils’, this tour will show you some of the best scenery that Cumbria has to offer. ITINERARY

DAY 1 Once everyone is on board the coach we will drive through the Midlands and Lancashire. The final leg of the journey takes us over the Cumbrian fells and along the shore of Ullswater to our Hotel in Glenridding.

This tour takes you to a central part of the country that has kept an ageless, sleepy character and has close links to some of the most famous events in our history. We will discover the enigmatic story of Richard III and the part he played in the Wars of the Roses, and visit the great battlefield site of Bosworth Field. In September 2012, the remains of King Richard were discovered within the site of the former Greyfriars Church in Leicester, now turned into a car park. They were ultimately reinterred at Leicester Cathedral in March 2015, and this amazing discovery has led to a resurgence of interest in the last of our great Plantagenet kings. YOUR HOLIDAY INCLUDES

䡲 Guided costumed tour of Tamworth Castle, followed by tea and cake in the Great Hall

䡲 Visit to Leicester Cathedral and Richard III’s Tomb 䡲 Visit to the National Memorial Arboretum

DAY 4 Rheged is one of Lakeland’s newest visitor attractions. Home to shops selling local delicacies, outdoor clothing, books and Cumbrian arts and crafts, Rheged is housed in an awardwinning grass-covered building near Penrith. We continue to Hutton-in-the-Forest, the historic home of Lord and Lady Inglewood, with a wide variety of architectural styles from the 17th century to the present day. DAY 5 We make our way over the winding Kirkstone Pass and visit the Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole. You can take a stroll around the grounds to the shore of Windermere and enjoy the displays in the house. We will stop for lunch in Grasmere, where William Wordsworth is buried in the churchyard alongside his wife and family. You can take the opportunity to try some of Sarah Nelson’s famous Gingerbread, a Lakeland speciality. We return via Thirlmere, with views of some of the highest peaks in the Lake District.

DAY 7 We set off for home after breakfast, with happy memories of our holiday in the Lake District, and reach Sussex late afternoon for taxis to your door.

䡲 Visit to the Bosworth Field Visitor Centre

䡲 Visit to the Richard III exhibition in Leicester Guildhall

DAY 3 Today we enjoy a full day excursion to Hexham, a charming market town in Northumberland with cobbled streets and a medieval abbey. Later we follow the line of Hadrian’s Wall, one of only a few places in the UK to have been granted World Heritage status.

DAY 6 A day to relax at our Hotel and enjoy the surroundings. There are plenty of walks available, from a gentle stroll beside the Lake to the arduous ascent of Helvellyn, England’s highest mountain. There is a boat service around Ullswater and to the waterfall at Aira Force.

䡲 Ride on the Bosworth Battlefield Railway

䡲 Guided visit of the National Brewery Museum with heritage machinery, vintage vehicles, shire horses and beer tasting

Lake Annecy and The Haute Savoie of France with Tony Pragnell

PASSPORT REQUIRED

Saturday 27th May for 9 days New Itinerary

Lake Annecy is surely the most delightful lake in France, in the spectacular Haute-Savoie region, surrounded by Europe's highest mountains. Tony Pragnell, who will be accompanying this tour, has devised a new itinerary with superb excursions, all included in the tour price!

Tuesday A day in Annecy, its mediaeval quarter laced with canals, flower covered bridges, pastel facades, and old arcaded streets. Tuesday is market day, a colourful atmosphere and a great illustration of the local produce and tempting delicacies. We include a boat trip on the lake, and end the afternoon with a drive to Col de Forclaz, where paragliders leap and soar among the mountains.

The travelling days are enhanced by pleasant landscapes, Champagne country via Reims to Troyes, and then through Burgundy vineyards towards the mountains and lakes of Haute Savoie. The shorter journey days allow for a relaxing lunchtime in the mediaeval town of Beaune on day two. And on our return we spend lunchtime in Nuits St Georges. ITINERARY

Saturday We take a pleasant route through Picardy, to the charming city of Troyes, capital of the Champagne region. We stay at Mercure Troyes Centre. The mediaeval lanes of Troyes make an ideal venue to dine out on a summer’s evening. Sunday Buffet breakfast at our hotel, and then a drive into the Burgundy region with an extended lunch stop in the historic walled town of Beaune. We continue through impressive scenery, before reaching the lakeside at Annecy, arriving at Hotel Les Grillons at the end of the afternoon. Our hosts, Aurelie and Sebastian, will be waiting to welcome us. Recent additions at the hotel include a baby (for Aurelie) and a lift. Evening dinner and breakfast are included throughout our six night stay.

Wednesday Two new visits are combined today. We begin at one of the natural wonders of the French Alps. Just a short drive from Annecy, the river has carved out the Gorges du Fier. We can take the suspended walkway above the rushing river, and venture deep into the gorge with the River flowing at its base. This afternoon we go nearby Vaulx, a small village in unspoilt countryside, between two large alpine lakes. Here we find Jardins-Secrets, an enchanting combination of gardens and architecture, with surprises, ideas, audacious creations, and a family history to discover. Thursday A pleasant drive to Lake Geneva taking the Routes des Grand Alpes to Yvoire on the southern shore of the lake. Yvoire is a member of the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages of France. We can browse the tiny boutique shops and wander down to the smart new harbourside. Yvoire has plenty of cafes ideal for lunch. You may like to visit Le Jardin de Cinq Senses, an amalgamation of the five senses, brought alive among hedged cloisters with scented plants and colourful flowers. Friday A day at leisure to enjoy our hotel, perhaps relax by the pool or in the gardens. Time to stroll to the lakeside and explore the village of Talloires. It is possible to catch the boat across to Annecy if you wish. Saturday We begin our journey home, with a lunch break in Nuits-Saint-Georges, one of the most famous Burgundy wine villages. Overnight again at Mercure Troyes. Sunday Channel crossing from Calais this afternoon. We complete the homeward journey to Sussex to meet the waiting taxis.

Monday A late start today. Scenic drive to the summit of Col de Aravis, with a glimpse of Mont Blanc in the distance. We have our lunch stop at the top of the pass and then continue, via the beautiful scenery of Col de Croix Fry, to the little town of Thones. In the countryside on the edge of Thones, we find the small Museum of the French Resistance in Haute Savoie. We have a guide in English, and a film with English sub-titles. There is also a dedicated cemetery alongside. Your Holiday Hotel Hotel Les Grillons plays an important part in this relaxing holiday. There are just thirty rooms, so we have the hotel virtually to ourselves. Run by a charming young family, there is an ambience of tranquillity here, with a pleasant garden, outdoor pool, mountain backdrop, just 200 metres to the lake. Les Grillons has built a reputation for its food. Chef Sebastian produces delicious contemporary French cuisine, and the service is always impeccable. www.hotel-grillons.com

Stay in the heart of Stratford-upon-Avon and enjoy visits to all five of the properties associated with our greatest playwright.

The Severn is the longest river in the United Kingdom and flows through the beautiful countryside of Worcestershire and Shropshire on its journey from the Welsh Mountains to the Bristol Channel. On one evening there will be a talk on the history of Stourport-on-Severn, and you will have an opportunity to explore this historic Georgian town, which owes its existence to the construction of the Staffordshire & Worcester Canal in the 1760s. ITINERARY

DAY 1 A taxi will collect you from home and bring you to the coach to join your driver and fellow travellers. We drive through the Cotswolds for a visit to Croome Court. Step back into what remains of a secret wartime airbase and stroll through ‘Capability’ Brown’s very first landscape masterpiece. Croome was home to the Earls of Coventry and the National Trust is slowly pulling this glorious yet faded house back from the brink. We continue through the Severn Valley to our Hotel near Stourport. On arrival enjoy a cup of tea/coffee and cake whilst luggage is taken to your room.

DAY 2 After breakfast we will take a short drive to Kidderminster. Here we will transfer to the Severn Valley Railway for a nostalgic steam train ride, meandering through the Shropshire countryside alongside the River to Bridgnorth, where we will rejoin the coach. This afternoon we continue to the RAF Museum Cosford, home to over 70 aircraft and adjacent to an active airfield. We include a guided tour to bring the exhibitions to life. DAY 3 Today we travel to Shrewsbury. The town has charming black and white buildings and cobbled streets, and we will make our way to Victoria Quay to board the passenger boat Sabrina. SUNDAY Taxi pick up from your home to the coach. We drive through Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire to the canalside town of Banbury. Find lunch and take a stroll beside the Canal, where there is always plenty of activity, with colourful narrowboats passing through the lock. Stratford-on-Avon is only another 20 miles, and we arrive there mid-afternoon in time to begin your exploration of the town before dinner. MONDAY We begin today with a stroll to Shakespeare’s Birthplace, where he also spent the first five years of his married life. After an introductory talk we will tour the house to discover the world that shaped the man. Next we visit Hall’s Croft, the elegant Tudor home of Shakespeare’s daughter Susanna. After a break for lunch we will make our way to New Place, final home of the Bard, where he wrote ‘The Tempest’ and his later plays, and where he died in 1616. TUESDAY This morning we drive to Mary Arden’s Farm. It is still a working farm, 500 years after Shakespeare’s mother lived here, and we will meet the costumed residents as they go about their daily tasks of cooking, tending crops and feeding the rare breed animals. Next we head to the hamlet of Shottery, to the most romantic of the Shakespeare houses, Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. It is a thatched gem in beautiful grounds, where William courted his bride-to-be.

WEDNESDAY We conclude the Shakespeare story with a fascinating guided tour of the riverside theatre that is home to the Royal Shakespeare Company. Each tour is different, depending on which areas are being used for production and rehearsals on the day, but typically you will see the backstage area, lighting and sound booths, dressing rooms, wardrobe and wig-making workshops and the auditorium. The rest of today is free to explore more of Stratford, perhaps enjoying a leisurely cruise on the River, or a stroll to Holy Trinity Church, Shakespeare’s final resting place. THURSDAY Departing Stratford after breakfast we will drive to Oxford, ‘City of Dreaming Spires’. Oxford has 1,500 listed buildings from every major period of British architecture from the 11th century onwards. There will be time to enjoy the fairy-tale city and find lunch before rejoining the coach to return to Sussex.

WEDNESDAY Once everyone is on board we will drive through the Thames Valley to the small town of Burford. With its medieval bridge, houses of mellow Cotswold stone and attractive Tudor and Georgian frontages, Burford is justifiably one of the most picturesque towns in England. After time for lunch we will take you on a leisurely tour, following the pretty Windrush Valley to Chipping Campden. The main street is lined with ancient houses, whilst its church is perhaps one of the finest ‘wool’ churches in the Cotswolds. Time here for tea, but don’t over indulge or it may spoil your appetite for the ‘main event’. A short drive takes us to our Hotel in nearby Mickleton. There will be time to relax and take a stroll around the village before dinner. THURSDAY After a full English breakfast (if you can manage it!) we will travel the short distance to Hidcote Manor Garden. SUNDAY Today we will take you for a visit to The Fred Dibnah Heritage Centre. The fascinating former home of Britain’s best loved steeplejack, Dr Fred Dibnah MBE, has been opened to the public, and following an introductory talk you will walk around Fred’s sprawling backyard to see his steam workshop, oil-stained tools and machinery, and the 70 foot mineshaft that he built without telling the local council! At lunchtime we make our way to the centre of Bolton, home of the award-winning Olympus fish and chip restaurant. We will enjoy cod, chips and peas, served with bread and butter and followed by dessert and tea/coffee. Our final visit of the day is to the Oswaldtwistle Mills Shopping Village, a former Lancashire weaving mill, with over 100 retailers all under one roof. Sunday 27th August for 6 days New Tour

New Tour

Explore some of Cornwall’s picturesque fishing villages and harbours, where smuggling was once as important an industry as tourism is nowadays. ITINERARY

DAY 1 A taxi will bring you to the coach to join your driver and fellow passengers. There will be refreshment stops along the way, the last of which will be high up on Bodmin Moor at Jamaica Inn. The historic coaching house has been welcoming travellers for almost 300 years, and was made world-famous by Daphne du Maurier’s tale of smugglers, rogues and pirates. DAY 2 This morning we discover Charlestown where you can wander along the side of the original Grade II listed harbour, admire the Tall Ships and almost imagine that you have been cast as an extra in Poldark. At lunchtime we will be in the fishing village of Mevagissey where, in the 17th century, fishermen used to make their living from pilchards and smuggling. Narrow streets lead to the picturesque harbour where you can still find working fishing boats. We round off the day with a visit to The Lost Gardens of Heligan, one of the most popular botanical gardens in the UK. A genuine secret garden, it was lost for decades and has been hailed by the Times as ‘The Garden Restoration of the Century’! DAY 3 Looe is a delightful fishing town, made up of East and West Looe, which face each other across the river. Explore the gift shops, visit the Lifeboat Station and enjoy a fish and chip lunch or a local ale in one of the old inns. Later we visit nearby Polperro where a maze of lanes and alleyways lead to the harbour, a true slice of Cornish beauty. There are art and craft galleries and a Heritage Museum of Smuggling and Fishing. DAY 4 We drive across Cornwall to its northern coast to visit pretty Padstow. Much of the filming of Poldark took place in this area, and you may recognise views over the Camel Estuary. Padstow is a charming working fishing port and a popular foodie destination with eateries such as Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant. This afternoon relax and enjoy a round trip on the Bodmin & Wenford Railway, Cornwall’s only full size railway operated by steam locomotives.

DAY 5 We say our farewells to Cornwall and head home, crossing the Tamar Bridge and calling at Buckfast Abbey. View the great Abbey Church with its many art treasures and visit the restaurant and gift shops where you will find a range of unusual monastic products. We complete the return journey during the afternoon, reaching Sussex and the waiting taxis by early evening.

This tour is based at the Metropole Hotel in the Victorian spa town of Llandrindod Wells, a luxurious base from which to explore the beautiful Heart of Wales. ITINERARY

Later this afternoon we rejoin the coach to return to the Hotel.

ITINERARY

DAY 1 Today's journey includes some beautiful countryside as we travel through the Gloucestershire Cotswolds and rural Herefordshire. Entering Wales we skirt the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons. By late afternoon we reach our Hotel in a stunning location on the Pembrokeshire coastline. We stay for four nights, with dinner and breakfast included. DAY 2 We follow the coast to the university town of Aberystwyth. Next we take a journey through the spectacular Rheidol Valley by Narrow-Gauge Steam Train on one of "The Great Little Trains of Wales". The 11¾-mile journey between Aberystwyth and Devil's Bridge takes approximately one hour, as the train overcomes a height difference of 600ft, affording superb views of the Valley below. We may take the train in the opposite direction, depending on the 2017 timetable. DAY 3 Enjoy a full day drive through the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Our tour includes St. David's, the smallest cathedral city in Britain. The Cathedral dominates what is really only a small attractive village, and was a popular pilgrimage destination throughout the Middle Ages, still attracting thousands of visitors today. DAY 4 A shorter day today as we visit Llanerchaeron. This elegant Georgian villa, owned by the National Trust, is set in the wooded Aeron Valley. Remarkably unaltered for 200 years, the estate includes a farm, walled gardens and a lake. It is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including bottlenose dolphins, porpoises, Atlantic grey seals and a wide variety of bird species. Further details of the boat trip will be sent nearer the time.

DAY 3 A short drive takes us to Buckland Abbey. Once owned by Cistercian Monks, the Abbey is now looked after by the National Trust, and is crammed with a variety of treasures such as Sir Francis Drake’s drum. We will return to the Hotel through the rugged landscape of the National Park.

DAY 5 Leaving Pembrokeshire we return via the Severn Bridge, making a stop for lunch in elegant Marlborough. We reach the local area by late afternoon/early evening for taxis to your door.

Built 600 years ago, the Hall has changed little since Tudor times, and the 12-acres garden features terraces, ponds and old orchards with over 150 apple varieties. Take the shuttle bus, or a short stroll, to the Quay to see the Tamar sailing barge ‘Shamrock’, lime kilns and Discovery Centre. Later enjoy a visit to Cotehele Mill, a working watermill with wheelwright’s shop, chairmaker, blacksmith and potter.

The Isle of Man from tip to toe Monday 25th September for 7 days New Itinerary

Every two or three years we include a visit to The Isle of Man, famous for its stunning coastline, spectacular scenery and gentle pace of life. This charming Island has a rich heritage and history, and also boasts one of the most impressive vintage railway systems in Britain.

DAY 4 Travelling via St. Johns, site of Tynwald Hill which was the original assembly place for the Isle of Man Parliament, we visit Milntown House near Ramsey. Set in 15 acres of beautifully maintained gardens, this impressive historic house is the former home of the Christian family. After time for lunch in the café we will continue to the Point of Ayre, the northernmost point on the Isle of Man. The return route to Douglas will take us over the Mountain Road which forms part of the famous TT Motorcycle Course. DAY 5 Another nostalgic train ride today, as we travel on the Steam Railway to Port Erin, through some of the Island’s loveliest countryside. There will be time to explore the attractive seaside town before rejoining the coach to continue to The Sound of Man, at the very southern tip of the Island. The Visitor Centre contains a wealth of information about the history of the area, and there is a café built into the headland from where there are panoramic views of the Sound and the Calf of Man, a small island directly opposite.

DAY 1 Taxi pick-up from your home to the coach and drive through the Midlands to the pretty canalside town of Stone in Staffordshire for a late lunch break. Our overnight hotel is the comfortable Salmesbury Hotel in the Ribble Valley. Dinner and breakfast included.

DAY 2 This morning we visit Lancaster, with time to explore and find an early lunch before continuing to nearby Heysham for the afternoon ferry (crossing time approximately 3.5 hours) to Douglas. Our hotel is just a few minutes from the port so we will soon be checked in and enjoying dinner at our Hotel.

DAY 7 The Hotel will provide an early breakfast so that we can take the morning sailing to Heysham, arriving there at midday. We travel home via the motorways and reach the waiting taxis in Sussex mid-evening.

DAY 3 A morning visit to the Manx Museum provides an introduction to the Island’s 10,000 year history, with exhibitions and a short film. Next we will take a journey on the Manx Electric Railway from Douglas along the coast to Laxey. One of our oldest narrow gauge railways, it still uses the original Victorian and Edwardian rolling stock. At Laxey we will visit the world’s largest working waterwheel, the Lady Isabella. The wheel stands at 72 feet high and has been one of the Island’s most popular attractions for well over 150 years. Later we will board another electric train to climb to the summit of Snaefell. From the top of the Island’s only mountain, at 2,036 feet, you may be able to see some or all of the Seven Kingdoms. Your Holiday Hotel The three-star Ascot Hotel overlooks Douglas Bay in the Island’s capital. It is a small family-run hotel that prides itself on offering guests a warm welcome and friendly and attentive service. Your stay includes dinner, bed and full Manx breakfast. Due to the age and layout of the building not all bedrooms have level access from the lift as there are small steps along the corridors. ITINERARY

DAY 1 Taxi pick-up from your home to the coach. We travel through the Midlands for a lunch break at Trentham Gardens near Stoke. Continuing through rural Staffordshire and Cheshire we reach North Wales and spend tonight at the Kinmel Hotel, set amidst rolling parkland with views of the coast. DAY 2 An early departure for Holyhead on Anglesey, where we board the Stena Line Ferry which crosses the Irish Sea in around 3 hours 15 minutes. Breakfast today is included on board the ship. We will head west across Ireland, making a brief stop in Athlone, a pretty town on the River Shannon. The journey from Dublin to County Clare is about 170 miles, but Irish roads have improved greatly in recent years – they now even have motorways! – so we will arrive at our Hotel by the end of the afternon in good time for dinner. DAY 3 After breakfast we will set off to explore the Burren National Park, an area of distinctive limestone plateaux and outcrops providing a habitat for all kinds of rare flora and fauna. The Visitor Centre in Kilfenora offers a good introduction and some of the best scones in Ireland! We will then follow part of the Wild Atlantic Way, hugging the coast past Ballyvaughan and around Black Head to the world-renowned Cliffs of Moher. From the cliff top and excellent visitor centre there are superb views stretching from Connemara and Galway Bay to Dingle Bay and the Blasket Islands. DAY 4 A half day excursion to the little matchmaking town of Lisdoonvarna, famous for its Victorian Spa Complex. You will be able to visit the Burren Smokehouse, where you can taste some of their fine Irish smoked salmon. There are mosaics inside and outside the shop, and you can see the very first kiln that was used for smoking. A wide range of organic foods and Irish craft products are available to buy. We return to our Hotel at lunchtime so that you can explore the town of Ennistymon, with its traditional shop fronts and lively ‘craic’pubs.

DAY 7 We take our leave of the Falls Hotel and travel to County Limerick to visit Bunratty Castle, Ireland’s foremost medieval fortress. The Castle dates from 1425 and contains 15th and 16th century furnishings, tapestries and works of art. We also spend time in the Folk Park. Enjoy the sights, sounds, tastes and scents of this enchanting place as you stroll from house to house around the village street complete with school, post office, doctors house, hardware shop, printers and of course McNamara’s pub! This afternoon we drive through County Tipperary and County Waterford to the Maldron Hotel in Wexford for a final overnight stay with dinner and breakfast. Our new itinerary provides the opportunity to explore this beautiful part of Scotland and to enjoy great local food and entertainment. Lunch is included on three days of your holiday. To keep travelling times enjoyable and make the journey more interesting, we include overnight stops, and part of the return journey will be on one of Britain’s most scenic railways. ITINERARY

DAY 1 A taxi will collect you from home. We journey north and cross into Bonnie Scotland. Tonight we will stay at the Gretna Hall Hotel with dinner, bed and breakfast. DAY 2 We continue through Lanarkshire to the city of Glasgow. A guided tour by coach will take us from Glasgow’s humble beginnings as a small provincial town to its development as a major trading port and industrial powerhouse and, more recently, as a City of European Culture. After time to find lunch rejoin the coach for the short journey to Drymen, where a warm welcome and management drinks reception awaits. Your 4-course Dinner will be served in the Merlin restaurant and includes a glass of wine, tea and coffee.

DAY 4 As 2017 will be Scotland’s Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology, today’s excursion takes you to one of the country’s grandest and most impressive castles. It was a favoured residence of the Stewart kings and queens who held grand celebrations from christenings to coronations. A packed lunch is included today, and in the afternoon we continue to Falkirk to visit the Falkirk Wheel. The impressive and unique rotating boatlift opened in 2002 and is a masterpiece of design. DAY 5 A leisurely day through the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. We head first to Callander, an attractive town where you can discover why the local countryside is known as “Rob Roy’s Territory”. Callander became famous in the 1960s as the fictional base for the popular TV series ‘Dr Finlay’s Casebook’. Then it’s on past Loch Venachar to Loch Katrine, a beautiful freshwater loch steeped in history and legend. We include lunch in the restaurant overlooking the Loch and a cruise on the famous steamship Sir Walter Scott.

DAY 6 Leaving Drymen we head south over the border to Carlisle. We have reserved seats for the 72-mile journey through remarkable scenery on what is considered one of this country’s most spectacular railway lines. Heading through the peaceful Eden Valley the line climbs steadily to Garsdale Head into the rugged Yorkshire Dales National Park. It was in Strasbourg in 1570 that the very first Christmas Market in Europe took place, and the tradition has continued to the present day with around 300 stalls around the City Centre, Your Holiday Hotel The Grand Hotel Filippo offers modern rooms with an Art Deco style. Roadmark guests will be given spacious ‘Elegance’ rooms with hospitality tray, flat screen TV and Wi-Fi. All rooms are ensuite with a shower over bath. www.grand-hotel-filippo.net

Travel Insurance £33.50 IMPORTANT NOTE - EU SUBSIDY At the present time the visit to the Parliament in Strasbourg is subsidised by the EU. The cash payment is received on the day of the visit (you must attend in order to receive the payment), and is intended to help towards the cost of travel, one meal and accommodation. The payment is approximately €200 per person. Since Roadmark Travel has reduced the cost of this tour to keep it at a reasonable level, Roadmark will retain €90pp, meaning that you would receive approximately €110 each. HOWEVER, AS A RESULT OF ‘BREXIT’ THIS SUBSIDY CAN NO LONGER BE GUARANTEED AND WE MAY RECEIVE NOTHING IF IT IS WITHDRAWN FOR UK VISITORS BY THE TIME OF OUR VISIT. All rather complicated, but hopefully Britain will still be an EU member when we visit and it will not affect our itinerary.

When we visited the Livermead Cliff Hotel for Christmas 2015, many of the passengers told us that it was our most successful Christmas tour yet! Therefore, 2017 will see us travelling to the English Riviera once again for a comfortable, relaxing and entertaining stay over the festive period. The Livermead Cliff is in the same family ownership as the Corbyn Head Hotel, a firm favourite with Roadmark guests for many years. It is a 3-star Hotel in a super seafront position about a mile from the centre of Torquay. The comfortable lounge and bar have stunning views across Torbay and there are 67 tastefully decorated bedrooms with flatscreen television, telephone, hairdryer and tea/coffee tray. There is a lift. Your holiday will include all the usual Roadmark “extras” such as Guess the Weight of the Cake, a Christmas Quiz and of course a visit from Father Christmas himself! View the Hotel at www.livermeadcliff.co.uk PROVISIONAL CHRISTMAS PROGRAMME 2017

23rd December Arrival at the Livermead Cliff Hotel in Torbay. Tea and biscuits served while luggage is taken to your room. Get to know your hosts and fellow passengers over a welcome drink before dinner.

A Look Ahead to 2018 and Beyond At Roadmark Travel we are always looking ahead and planning more exciting and innovative holidays, so let us know if you are interested in any of the following tours and we will make sure that you receive full details as soon as they become available:

A West Country Christmas

The Scintillating Scillies The Scilly Isles are a place like nowhere else in England. Outstandingly beautiful, uncrowded and unspoilt, this Island archipelago lies just off the coast of Cornwall but seems like a world apart. We shall be staying on the main island of St. Mary’s, and there will be the opportunity to visit some of the “off Islands” like Tresco with its tranquil ruined Abbey and world-famous gardens. We have a provisional date of 25th July 2018, for seven days.

Christmas Eve After a leisurely breakfast it’s all aboard the Santa Express. We arrive in Paignton where log fires will be burning and board a steam train for the round trip alongside the pretty River Dart to Kingswear. During the journey enjoy a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie. This evening you will be welcomed in true style with a Champagne Cocktail Reception hosted by the Hotel Management Team prior to dinner.

Norway We were not able to arrange a holiday to Norway in 2017, but are planning another visit to the Norwegian Fjords in the summer of 2018. Considered by many people to be the world’s best and most diverse destination, there is something unique and magical about the waterfalls, lakes, rivers, glaciers and high mountain passes of Fjordland Norway. We are not yet sure if the tour will be by air to and from Bergen, or if we will travel overland, but if you would like to receive further information please ensure that you are on our ‘interested’ list.

Christmas Day Have your camera at the ready to capture Santa who comes bearing gifts for all! Today simply eat, drink and be merry as we celebrate the highlight of our Christmas holiday. Luncheon is a seven-course yuletide banquet featuring the finest local produce, all freshly prepared and cooked to perfection. Boxing Day The day after Christmas brings yet more fine dining with a sumptuous Grand Buffet this evening. But that’s all after you have exercised your lungs at the Pantomime – “Oh yes you will”! 27th December It will be sad to leave the comfortable surroundings of the Livermead Cliff, but today we have to head home with fond memories of a happy Christmas spent in the best of company enjoying the good things in life.

Oberammergau Passion Play 2020 The World famous Oberammergau Passion Play is only held every ten years, and we are considering a visit to the performance in the summer of 2020. This extraordinary event dates back to 1633 when Bavaria was swept by a plague epidemic. In Oberammergau alone more than 80 lives were lost. The elders vowed that if their village was purged of plague they would perform the ‘Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ’ every ten years. The epidemic came to a standstill, and in 1634 the villagers fulfilled this solemn pledge for the first time. Ever since they have loyally kept their promise.

Programme subject to confirmation/alteration. A deposit of just £50 per person will secure your place on the 2017 Roadmark Christmas Holiday. This is fully refundable should you decide not to come once full details and prices have been published early in 2017.

In 2010 more than 500,000 visitors came from all over the World to the pretty Bavarian Alps to take their place in the magnificent Passion Play Theatre, and returned home with lasting memories of a unique, moving and truly memorable experience. 2020 will see the 42nd season, with over 2,000 local residents, a 120-strong choir and the 70 members of the Passion Play Orchestra participating. Roadmark hopes to be there, and we invite you to add your name to our list if you are interested in joining us and would like to receive priority booking.
