Dominating the skyline on the famous White Cliffs, Dover Castle and the labyrinth of tunnels beneath it provide a fascinating day out. Dover Castle proudly stands in 100 acres of ground that is steeped in 2000 years of history, from the Iron Age to the Nuclear Age. The mighty keep and bailey, built by Henry II, are the finest of their kind, while the panoramic views out across the English Channel from the lookout are astonishing. There are many discoveries to be made in the Castle and also included is a tour deep underground into the maze of Secret Wartime Tunnels. Wells

England’s smallest Cathedral City

Wells is a pretty and thriving market town nestled at the foot of the Mendip Hills. The name Wells derives from the three wells dedicated to Saint Andrew, one in the market place and two within the grounds of the Bishop’s Palace and Cathedral. Wells is the smallest Cathedral city in England. The Mute Swans in the moat at the Bishops Palace have for centuries been trained to ring bells via strings attached to them to beg for food. Two swans which were given to the bishop by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006, are still able to ring for lunch! There are plenty of cafes and restaurants and we aim to allow about 4 hours in the city.

Sissinghurst’s garden was created in the 1930s by poet Vita Sackville-West and her author husband Harold Nicolson. The garden is designed as a series of ‘rooms’, each with a different character of colour and/or theme, the walls being high clipped hedges and many pink brick walls. The rooms and ‘doors’ are so arranged that, as one enjoys the beauty in a given room, one suddenly discovers a new vista into another part of the garden, making a walk a series of discoveries that keeps leading one into yet another area of the garden. Sissinghurst has a restaurant and coffee shop. We shall return from Sissinghurst via a different route, dropping off in the same order as our morning pick-ups, finishing in roffey.

Charles Dickens visited Broadstairs in Kent regularly from 1837 until 1859. In 1937, to commemorate the centenary of the author’s first visit, Gladys Waterer, the then resident of Dickens House, conceived the idea of putting on a production of David Copperfield and of having people about the town in Victorian dress to publicise it. Thus the festival was born and, with the exception of the years of World War II, has been held annually ever since. Highlight of the day is the Grand Parade when the High Street is transformed back to Dickensian times.

‘The sleeping beauty of English Gardens’ This is one of the most magnificent yet least well-known gardens in England. Unlike ‘Capability’ Brown’s natural landscape styling, favoured during the late 18th century, Wrest Park’s formal gardens provide a fascinating history of gardening styles, laid out over 150 years and inspired by the great gardens of Versailles in France. The gardens are overlooked by a stylish French-style 18th century mansion and contain wonderful garden buildings. Sezincote House and Gardens

Sezincote House is built from red sandstone in a Neo-Mughal style, reflecting the importance of India in the British Empire at the time of building in the early 1800’s. So impressed was the Prince Regent on a visit to Sezincote shortly after it was completed, he changed his plans for the Royal Pavilion in Brighton to echo the same style. The interior of the house is purely classical, with no attempt to recreate the Indian theme in its decoration. The house is set in a romantic landscape of temples, grottoes, waterfalls and canals reminiscent of the Taj Mahal and is largely unchanged from the original design by Humphry Repton. prior to arrival at Sezincote we shall stop in the town of Stow on the Wold where there will be time to have lunch.
