Can you feel it? The Valley is buzzing with excitement. From Super Bowl LVII, to WM Phoenix Open, the city hasn’t felt this alive in years. With visitors in town flocking to all the hottest establishments and locals also attending all the exciting events Scottsdale has to offer this month, our city is truly the place to be in February.

In addition to giving the scoop on all the can’t-miss events (pages 55, 60, 62, 68 and 70 – whew, that’s a lot!), we’re also shining a light on the another exciting happening this month: Valentine’s Day. This issue is truly for lovers, as we’re showcasing five local married couples navigating the entrepreneurial world together (page 48).

Other lovely highlights include: romantic retreats right here in Scottsdale (page 56), recently opened statewide luxe lodging (page 66), a red shot that screams romance (page 104), date night getups (page 84), candleholders for setting an alluring mood (page 78), and a heart-shaped, pink token (page 75) that will bring gifting your loved one – or yourself – to a new level.

Those looking to celebrate Galentine’s Day (get it, gal-entines?), aka a girl’s day out, should also consider booking a trip on the new Champagne Train (page 96), which is basically the newer, better version of a party bus, complete with stops at wine bars in Old Town Scottsdale and a bartender on board pouring rosé all day. What could be better?

Additional features include a look at the new Federal American Grill (page 122), all the best spots if planning a trip to Miami (page 100), and cocktails made with local liquors (page 102).

All my best, Gabby

FIGHTING FOR THE FUTURE

Forensic Services Director Kris Cano talks supporting the Valley’s LGBTQ youth with one n ten

As an employee of the City of Scottsdale for over 20 years, Kris Cano is making a big impact in the community, in the world of forensics and beyond.

“I have always had a passion for forensics. It’s a field that is never the same and allows one to apply science to criminal

investigations,” Cano says. “Being able to provide critical results and make a difference behind the scenes is a big driver for me.”

Early in her career, Cano worked in crime laboratories specializing in in DNA analysis, and attributes her advancement from technician to director to a little bit of luck and a whole lot of

So Scottsdale! February ‘23 35

persistence. During her nearly 30-year career, Cano – who has a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Florida State University and a master’s in chemistry from the University of South Florida – has worked in everything from state to federal to municipal organizations.

Today, as Scottsdale’s forensics services director, she oversees budget development, quality assurance and administrative functions in the forensics laboratory, the property and evidence warehouse, the digital forensic unit, and much more.

In her involvement with a wide range of organizations in the forensics community, including the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors and the American Academy of Forensic Scientists, Cano works tirelessly to help develop standards for forensic science. In addition to training and mentoring new employees, one of the highlights of her career has been watching technology advance over the years, especially in the area of digital forensics.

“Most people now have a small computer at their fingertips that can provide useful investigative information that was not even thought of 30 years ago,” she says. “Back then, you needed a

nickel-sized stain of blood to obtain a DNA profile through a manual process. Today, DNA can be obtained from items that people touch, and the process is automated.”

While forensics often takes the center stage in crime dramas like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Cano knows firsthand that real life is rarely like they show it on TV.

“One misconception about the field is that we can make things happen instantaneously. We have to comply with policies and procedures that allow the work to be credible in court proceedings – this takes time and attention to detail which can’t be completed by the end of a TV show.”

Leading the Charge

In addition to a fulfilling, jam-packed career in forensics, Cano’s passion project is her involvement with one n ten, a local nonprofit that serves lesbian, gay, bisexual, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth through social and service programs. With its social networking events, housing assistance, suicide prevention services and life skills classes, one n ten (www.onenten.org) aims to support a new generation of leaders who prioritize self-expression, self-acceptance, and healthy lifestyle choices.

Cano’s first experience with the nonprofit was as an attendee at an annual fundraiser. “I was so inspired by the stories of the youth and what incredible programs the organization offered,” she says. “I was looking for resources for my own child and this organization provided a safe space to ask questions and obtain much-needed help.”

One standout moment from Cano’s time with one n ten came last October, during the National Coming OUT Day celebration at the Heard Museum. The fundraiser provided the opportunity for youth to share their coming out stories in front of a supportive and receptive audience. Cano and her daughter were among the storytellers, and witnessing her daughter’s strength up on stage is something Cano knows she’ll never forget.

“I was so proud of [my daughter’s] bravery,” says Cano, who emphasizes the importance of mental health awareness for parents of LGBTQ children. “Kids often feel ashamed or uncomfortable being honest with who they are, which can lead to depression and social anxiety. Let them know that this is your journey too. Be supportive, provide them that safe space, and ask your kid what they need so you can provide them with the tools to be confident, brave, comfortable and happy.”

This year, in addition to her role on one n ten’s governance committee, Cano will serve as vice chair of the board of directors, helping raise and distribute funds, update bylaws, recruit new board members, and adopt policies consistent with the nonprofit’s mission to build a brighter future, one where LGBTQ youth are engaged in their communities and accepted for who they are.

And through it all, Cano has one motivating factor in mind – her family. “My children definitely inspire me. In this world, they have to be brave, strong, and resilient. I try to set an example for them by working hard, being kind and giving back, which I hope they will carry on. The best legacy I can leave my kids is for them to remember how much I loved them.”

A BLOOMING BUSINESS

Sydney Crimmins’ custom silk floral installations add a pop of pizzazz to any venue

Sydney Crimmins’ burgeoning company, aptly called Garden Party Girls, allows customers to step into a world of glamour, romance, and fantasy – all while documenting their experiences via social media and video blogging. Her Instagram-worthy sumptuous silk flower installations are a win-win. They wow viewers and create instant buzz for venues.

Facets of the design world Crimmins has immersed herself in include tablescapes fashion, interior decor and visual blogging. Her knowledge and knack for combining colors, textures, and lighting paid off when she achieved the position of visual merchandiser and assistant manager at a small boutique in Mesa. A defining moment in her career came when the manager tasked her and her friend, who was the co-manager, to create the holiday party. The challenge was promising, but there were two caveats: a small budget and limited time. Despite the constraints, the two created a smash hit.

“That’s when we looked at each other and wondered if we should create an event planning business,” Crimmins says. “My friend ended up moving, but I took on private events like birthday parties, anniversaries and small weddings. I even provided the decor for a 1970s-themed party, and a glitzy Great Gatsby one.”

Crimmins’ foray into the world of floral backdrops came about when her ad for photobooths caught the eyes of the owners of the Fifty Shades of Rosé bar in downtown Scottsdale. The owners envisioned a permanent floral installation to target bridal parties and happy hours. Thanks to Crimmins’ aesthetic flair, the walls and bar area are now swathed in over 10,000 stems of silk stem pink peonies and white peonies, with some greenery and pink accents to complete the look. She also created a dramatic focal point by placing a colorful piano against a wall with the bar’s logo on top.

Through her company (www.gardenpartygirls.com), Crimmins is currently working on a large project series for Casa Amigos bar, also in downtown Scottsdale. The restaurant is doing an entire remodel and is inspired by the styles of Tulum, Mexico. Patrons can look forward to seeing authentic plaster on the walls, neutral colors, and greenery and lots of flowers above the rectangular bar, as well as in the hallways.

“The reason I love commercial installations so much is they help business owners succeed on their journey,” Crimmins says. “Thanks to my business, I have creative freedom, I get to build relationships, and I still get to be with my girls and husband, which are important priorities for me.”

Feeling dissatisfied? What do you want? Why do you want it? How do you want to feel?

As a master certified coach for over 20 years, and the founder of the most comprehensive coaching training program, The Quantum Success Coaching Academy, I have helped millions of people go from what they don’t want, to what they do want in their relationships, finances, career and well-being.

It all starts with shifting your words to shift your life.

Did you know there are things you are saying either out loud or to yourself that start the entire creation process of what you live as reality?

Words really do have power.

Ever say words or phrases such as: “I can’t afford it.” or

“I tried to lose the weight and I just can’t.”

Angelika Zgainer’s global travels inspire her artwork

Travel has long been a favorite activity for Angelika Zgainer, who was born and raised in Germany.

While living in her native country, Zgainer, who holds climate and environment protection in high regard, studied environmental engineering and went on to work in the field with hazardous material. She immigrated to America – specifically Scottsdale – 30 years ago, where she met her now-husband, had two sons and worked on indoor air quality studies.

Zgainer counts yoga, meditation, fashion, baking, and traveling among some of her cherised interests. Her travels have taken her to India, Thailand, Australia, Fiji, Bali, Israel, and Canada, to name a few. These journies that she’s been on, from going on solo trips for months at a time, to finding her rhythm while dancing tango in Argentine and Uruguay, have shaped her life and inspired another passion: painting.

After starting a family, Zgainer settled down and immersed herself in paining classes.

“It’s never too late to start something completely different in your life,” says Zgainer, who has been painting for 15 years and founded Angelika Fine Art (www.angelikafineart.com).

She first created traditional figurative art in oils, but later switched to acrylic paint and began to produce larger abstract works of art, depicting landscapes, architecture, and figurative subject matter.

“Sometimes I use a poem or literature for an inspiration, sometimes it is a feeling or a belief I like to express by using bold colors and strong brush strokes to convey moments in my life, rendering myself to my analytic and emotional mind, to tell my story in a lyrical way without words,” says Zgainer, who also works in ceramics, on larger sculptures and assembles jewelry.

No matter what she is creating, Zgainer’s process is simple: “I always look for inspiration in my surroundings,” she says.

From the towering Monument Valley and vivid sunsets in Arizona, to Montana’s glaciers and trendy cities like Tokyo, Berlin, and Indonesia, Zgainer is constantly exploring new techniques and approaches to bring her paintings to life.

“My emphasis is on composition, lines, movement, and proportion and I also work with image transfers, mixed media, metal embossing and ceramics,” she says.

The work of Zgainer doesn’t end at creating the artwork –and winning numorous awards for it. She also started a painting club at her sons’ high school and hosted a semi-solo exhibition at Walter Art Gallery in Scottsdale.

WORLD CLASS STYLE

Jacob Sannon makes a statement in any room he enters

While providing accounting and tax advisory services to business owners through his company, World Class CFOs, Jacob Sannon takes a modern and confident approach to both his business practices and his personal style.

“I am a high energetic individual that likes to bring positivity and fun into every room I’m in,” Sannon says.

As a former D1 collegiate athlete, Sannon knows that slim fits work best for his athletic frame, so he sticks with those cuts on the daily. “My signature look is a slim blue suit, stylish low cut Steve Madden shoes, a turtleneck sweater, a sparkly necklace, and my Michael Kors gold watch.”

With a preference for classic and polished fashion, Sannon turns to NFL players and athletic influencers for inspiration.

“Growing up I would watch the NFL draft and see guys in the most stylist suites that typically stood out and brought out their athletic look,” he says.

Despite his desire to wear monochromatic ensembles and well-fitting suits every day, Sannon keeps things simple on his days off – jeans, Jordans and a long-fit shirt round out his dress code on the weekend.

What are your favorite brands? Steve Madden or Aldo for dress shoes that are low cut with no laces with a little bit of sparkle. A stylish pair of shoes that stands out based on texture, shine and color can make or break the outfit. Calvin Klein or Perry Ellis for suits and dress shirts that are slim, comfortable and flexible.

What is your most prized possession in your closet? My Calvin Klein black turtleneck sweater. It’s an all-occasion staple that I can put on with either jeans or dress pants and goes with almost any shoe. Also, it’s very comfortable and fits really well to bring out my athletic look.

Do you follow anyone on social media that inspires your style? Yes, I’m always watching for trends. Steve Harvey typically has great suits and I love his color combinations. Kevin Hart is my go-to for athletic, everyday styles that are classy.

FLEXIBLE FASHION

Equestrian Molly Schwanz’s versatile style supports her busy schedule

Scottsdale native Molly Schwanz knows a thing or two about style and poise thanks to her time spent as a former Miss Arizona Teen USA in 2020.

The decorated equestrian and Arizona State University senior prefers a simple, classic look that supports her busy schedule at school, the office, the horse barn and working with her nonprofit Kindles for Kids.

“I enjoy anything from a stylish dress and different textures to jeans, sequins and always a bodysuit. And shoes… I love my shoes!” Schwanz says.

Because she splits her time outside of school as the meeting coordinator for EPIC International and as an avid horseback rider, Schwanz’s style has to be versatile.

“I am fortunate to be in an office atmosphere where I can carry my classroom style to my job by adding a subtle sweater or jacket over leggings and simple top,” she says. “The equestrian style influences my basic foundation which I build on and some of my favorite equestrian brands include Freedman riding pants, Carrots, and Ariat.”

Schwanz prefers neutral tones and clean lines, but her most treasured outfit remains the custom couture Sherri Hill dress that she wore at Miss Teen USA.

How does travel infleunce your style?

I am fortunate to travel for my job and was in Greece this past summer. From soft flowing dresses and beautiful color palettes to the neutral, elegant clean lines of linens. It inspired me to add a few colors and pieces into my mostly neutral palette.

What are your favorite brands? Alo Yoga and Lululemon for athleisure wear – their materials wash and wear well over time. Agolde and Mother jeans are my go-to brands for denim. The fit, cut and stretch of their fabrics suit my body type well.

Is there anyone who inspires your style? Hailey Bieber, Sofia Riche, Stephanie Abu-Sbeih, and Camila Coelho. They all have very minimalist styles with neutral tones, but also use a lot of basic pieces with many different outfits.

Cody and Felicia Walker

CEO and COO, Reach Out WorldWide

Cody and Felicia Walker were just 25 years old when they got a call that would change the course of their lives – Cody’s older brother, Paul Walker, had died in a single-car collision while leaving an event for his charity, Reach Out WorldWide.

“Paul played a huge role in where I am today,” Cody says. “I was the youngest, and our parents separated when I was in middle school. Paul really fell into the big brother role and molded me in a lot of ways. I looked up to him because he had everything – looks, money, personality – and yet he was just a normal, laid-back person.”

After the accident, the couple moved from Oregon to Los Angeles to be closer to family, with Cody and his brother Caleb standing in to complete Paul’s remaining scenes in Furious 7 of the Fast & Furious franchise. When the board of directors for Reach Out WorldWide (www.roww.org) asked Cody to be the new CEO, he saw a chance to make an impact on a cause that had been close to his brother’s heart.

Founded by Paul after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the nonprofit is comprised of skilled first responders and other medical and construction professionals that respond to natural disasters across the globe. ROWW’s boots on the ground philosophy means that small teams are deployed as quickly and efficiently as possible to assist local experts in locations that are sometimes overlooked by larger nonprofits.

Cody and Felicia – a former paramedic and a former civil engineer, respectively –have recently made a foray into TV as well on The Weather Channel’s Fast: Home Rescue, which follows their team as they rebuild houses that have been devastated by natural disaster.

“ROWW as an organization has never done anything like this,” Felicia says. “But we did what we do best – we adapted. The most rewarding part was changing the lives of people who had lost their homes. These were good people in a bad situation and having the opportunity to know and help them was beyond anything we could’ve ever dreamed.”

Shelly Maguire and Frankie Tedesco

Co-owners and founders, Ice Elements Skincare

Shelly Maguire and Frankie Tedesco owe a lot to serendipity. One day in Fort Lauderdale while Frankie was out jogging and Shelly was driving to her hotel to start her vacation, the two of them came to a red light at the same time. Frankie, who had stopped at that corner dozens of times in the past without talking to anyone, complimented Shelly through the open window, and the rest is history.

When Frankie, a massage therapist, and Shelly, who owned three salons in St. Louis before she moved to Florida with Frankie, decided to start a business together, skin care was at the top of their minds. “I noticed that people would come to my spas for services and then leave without the products that made them feel so good,” Shelly says. “Skin care seemed too complicated and time consuming – so we built our brand on keeping skin care simple.”

The hero product of the couple’s company, Ice Elements, is the 2 Minute Miracle Gel (www.2mmgel.com), a multitasker that cleanses, tones, and locks onto dead skin cells to exfoliate without any acids or abrasives. The star ingredient is a glycoprotein derived from a microorganism in the Antarctic Sea that locks in moisture in cold conditions.

Shelly, a lifelong fighter of Cystic Fibrosis, knows a thing or two about difficult conditions. After being given a life expectancy of 18 when she was just 9 years old, Shelly, now 62, balances living for today with excitement for the new experiences tomorrow holds for her and Frankie.

“We make each other better,” Shelly says. “Twenty-three years later, we’re still each other’s best friends for life. If you find one of us, you’ll find the other close by, always.”

“When I met Shelly at that red light, I was kind of a lost soul,” Frankie adds. “I needed direction, and Shelly helped set me on the right path. I truly believe that we saved each other.”

Brenda and Perry Rea

Owners, Queen Creek Olive Mill

Food and family are the two pillars of Perry and Brenda Rea’s lives.

Perry, whose parents were born in Italy, grew up cooking with his mom, surrounded by good food from a young age. After the couple started dating, Brenda was quickly familiarized with a cornerstone of Italian cuisine and culture: olive oil. But when she noticed that most of the olive oil Perry’s family used was imported from Italy, she wondered why no one was producing a high-quality product in America.

After researching the best places to grow olives, the couple, with four children and one on the way, moved from Detroit, Michigan, to Arizona, traveling to Colorno, Italy, for an olive oil sommelier course hosted by the International Olive Oil Academy along the way. Twenty-six years later, Queen Creek Olive Mill (www. queencreekolivemill.com), located on a 56-acre estate at the foot of the San Tan Mountains, is now a familiar name in kitchens across the Valley. Fan-favorite products include flavored olive oils, vinegars, tapenades, sauces, and Brenda’s line of natural, olive oil-based skincare, Olivespa, all sold on-site and at a retail store at Kierland Commons.

As they’ve expanded from 1,000 to over 11,000 trees over the years, Brenda and Perry have drawn on lessons from their own families while working to make the mill what it is today. Brenda, whose parents raised her to believe that anything is possible, has a passion for giving back, donating a bar of soap to a local women’s shelter for every three bars of Olivespa soap sold.

“I grew up working in the family automotive business and took it over from my dad once I graduated college,” Perry says. “My dad is my mentor – my strong work ethic came from him. My mom taught me all about food and gave me a love for cooking, something I’ll always be grateful for – as well as those who are fortunate enough to eat at our table!”

Igor and Irina Ilyinsky

Co-founders, ListenUp

Igor and Irina Ilyinsky are firm believers in the power of audio. When they returned to their respective cities after meeting on a cruise ship in 2001, the long-distance couple talked on the phone for hours every night, which proved essential in developing the communication skills they rely on today as a husband-and-wife business team.

It was on a family trip to Italy years later that the Ilyinskys, who had always encouraged each other’s entrepreneurial spirit, began brainstorming a new business idea. “I was very organized and booked some tours in advance, but we didn’t realize that jet lag and having teenage girls would impact us meeting a tour guide – we kept missing our tours,” Irina says.

In Venice, they decided to take things into their own hands, downloading a variety of apps that were ultimately disappointing.

Igor, equipped with a background in technology and love of coding, knew there had to be a better way, and ListenUp was born. The community storytelling app (www. joinlistenup.com) delivers location-based audio, like a museum tour that keeps going as one explores the architecture, natural wonders, and historic mom-and-pop businesses.

“We want to make people aware that the Phoenix/Scottsdale area is a place where awesome things happen,” Igor says. “As former small business owners, we’ve made it our mission to allow businesses to tell their story hyper-locally, to anyone within walking distance, in a way that generates revenue.”

With information available in 22 languages, Igor and Irina, both Soviet immigrants themselves, understand the importance of accessibility. “We came here when we were 3 years old. Our families had no language, just a couple of suitcases,” says Irina, who considers ListenUp an important resource for refugees and immigrants around the world. “We want them to have this information about where they are now in their own language, so they truly have pride in where they’re moving.”

Casey and Teresa Strunk

President & VP of New Business Development & Marketing, The Strunk Insurance Group

When Casey and Teresa Strunk purchased the family business, The Strunk Insurance Group (SIG), from Casey’s father Greg in 2018, they knew that together, they could accomplish great things.

“My father never wanted to sell the agency, but wanted it to be a multigenerational business where his brand could live on,” says Casey, who’d started in an entrylevel position at SIG after college and worked his way to the top. “I’m thrilled with the choice I’ve made. Employee benefits is what we do, but our ‘why’ is our people.”

“Our team feels more like an extended family than simply coworkers,” Teresa adds. As the firm’s marketing maestro, she’s worked to create a brand new website and completely refresh the company’s branding. And with the firm recently celebrating 40 years in business, the couple, who met through a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation campaign in 2011, make sure they’re constantly giving back to the community they call home.

At the end of the day, the Strunks have made it their mission to model kindness, independence, and a strong work ethic, not just in their professional lives, but for their two daughters. To them, it all comes down to maintaining meaningful relationships with their team, their clients, their children, and each other.

“Casey inspires me daily. He has grown to be the most thoughtful leader I know,” Teresa says. “I’m particularly impressed with his people-management approach – his team respects him and vice versa. He motivates me to be better every day, to always be the best version of myself.”

And for Casey, the feeling is mutual. “Teresa has had a great career in advertising sales, and has all the people skills I do not. She’s a leader in the community and passionate about doing the right thing, no matter the circumstances. Working together and sharing common goals has energized me and kept us focused on becoming a better business each and every day.”

Highly sought after for their rarity, craftmanship, or iconic status in pop culture, each of these instruments comes with a story, some of which are told via videos of notable

artists performing with some of the instruments on display. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily. Exhibition only, $4-$10; Museum entrance plus exhibition, $14-$27. www. mim.org.

Childhelp’s annual Drive the Dream Gala returns for a Western-themed evening

Prepare for Grammy-award winning entertainment, exquisite dinner fare and an exciting live auction to benefit Childhelp Children’s Center of Arizona, which has provided treatment, intervention and investigation services to 150,000 child survivors of abuse and neglect since its opening in 1998.

In its 19th year, Drive the Dream Gala invites guests to its annual black tie optional event, with just one catch – boots are welcome. The Western-themed event, which will take place at Feb. 18 at The Phoenician, will be headlined by country superstar Clint Black.

Each year, the organization’s signature fundraising event draws celebrities, dignitaries and donors from across America to support Childhelp’s lifesaving programs, which have served more than 12 million children through 63 years.

Emceed by television personalities Melissa Peterman and Rex Linn, other Drive the Dream acts include Western swing great Red Steagall, Nate Nathan & The MacDaddy-Os, Rosevelt Rawls, and Steve Amerson. Co-chairs Sheila and Mike Ingram, Kim and Rod Cullum, and vice chairs Carol and Jim Hebets prepare to giddyup for the kids.

“When my wife Sheila and I worked with our co-chairs Kim and Rod Cullum, we decided we wanted to create a fun event where you could raise millions of dollars but still show up in cowboy hats and boots,” Mike Ingram says. “Childhelp’s Children’s Advocacy Center has miniature horses in the halls. These therapy animals not only comfort children in crisis but follow those lil’ recovering cowpokes all the way through their testimonies in court. That’s something special to celebrate. It’s all about getting these kids back in the saddle.”

Rounding out the night, “The Queen of Country” Reba McEntire will receive the Childhelp Woman of the World Award; Dream City Church Pastor Tommy Barnett, will receive the Childhelp Man of the World

Award; and the driving school Track Rekord will receive the Childhelp Nellie Jackson Award.

“Childhelp programs save precious lives and offer a path to a safe, productive and meaningful life for the children we serve every day,” says Kim Cullum. “Rod and I are proud to partner with Mike and Sheila Ingram, our wonderful founders Sara and Yvonne, the Childhelp team of professionals and our many community supporters to raise awareness and critical funding for these programs and services in our state and across the country.”

Childhelp reaches tens of thousands of Arizona children and families each year through the Childhelp Children’s Center of Arizona; its prevention education program, Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe; its international child abuse helpline, the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline; and other Childhelp programs and services, which serve children and families nationwide.

IF YOU GO…

What: Moonlight Masquerade

Arizona Foundation for Women’s annual soiree will return this month, celebrating all nonprofit’s efforts with dinner, dancing, auctions and an awards ceremony.

“Guests will experience a night of fun, celebrating and recognizing great individuals with musical entertainment to top off the evening; learn how Arizona Foundation for Women works to improve the status of women in Arizona, and find ways they can get involved in various ways to make a difference,” says Mesha Davis, CEO and executive director of Arizona Foundation for Women (AFW).

Themed Moonlight Masquerade, though optional, attendees are encouraged to wear jewel tone colors and masquerade type masks. For those who forget their masks at home, there will also be masks on-site at the Camelback Inn.

“The theme, Moonlight Masquerade, evokes a night of celebrating the work Arizona Foundation for Women is doing for women in our state and to recognize those who are using their time, position or voice to elevate women,” Davis says.

Guests will hit the dance floor to enjoy this year’s entertainment, Kim Weston. Weston and her five-piece band will play a medley of upbeat live music to celebrate the nonprofit’s efforts and this year’s honorees.

Award-winning Broadway, film and television start Mary-Louise Parker will receive the prestigious Sandra Day O’Connor Lifetime Achievement Award for her expansive philanthropic and advocacy work in areas such as combatting human trafficking and empowering underserved women and children. Additional honors include the Marilyn R. Seymann Award

(recipient will be Sheriff Paul Penzone) and The Voice of Women Award (recipient was undecided at the time of press).

Additional highlights of the event, which will be co-chaired by Dr. Radha Rishi and Seema Patel, include a live auction and raffle, with travel and trips, beauty and spa items, entertainment and arts packages, jewelry, and more up for grabs.

“Proceeds will support our research efforts of which the data is heavily used by nonprofits, corporate and community leaders and lawmakers; creating programs that address unmet needs and reacting to unexpected issues that surface, providing education around leadership specific to women, financial independence and investments, where to find resources, programs and services; and moving our mission forward,” Davis says.

RIT for Foot & Ankle Pain

I hate to hear that foot pain is keeping someone from their everyday life,” says Dr. Kerry Zang, podiatric medical director of CiC Foot & Ankle. Just because you’re on your feet all day or are getting older, doesn’t mean your feet should hurt. Another big reason why people live with chronic foot pain, is because they didn’t get relief from prior treatment and are not aware that there may be other options.

“The thing that excites me most about being a doctor is finding new ways to help my patients. Regenerative medicine is the latest answer,” says Zang. “It doesn’t matter if you are suffering from arthritis, an old injury, Achilles tendonitis, heel pain or plantar fasciitis, pain after surgery, the list goes on and on. Regenerative medicine may be able to help.”

Regenerative injection therapy (RIT) uses growth factors to help repair and restore tissue, ligaments, and joints. Until recently, anti-inflammatory medication and steroid injections, like cortisone offered the best chance for relief. But, these options just reduced the symptoms. “While cortisone stops the swelling and

pain, it can also interfere with the healing process and more damage can occur,” explains Zang.

ago. Cortisone injections, physical therapy and pain medications did not help. He needed to wear a brace because his ankle was unstable and painful. “I couldn’t recommend additional surgery because while it may have addressed his ankle problem, I believe it would have just transferred the pain further up his leg, and most likely affect his knee,” says Zang. “I felt his best option was a growth factor injection.”

Now, doctors are able to deal with the underlying problem that is causing the pain. RIT helps the body initiate its own healing response, where the body replaces, repairs, reprograms and renews diseased or injured cells. “Sometimes the body just needs a little boost to encourage the regenerative process. The growth factors in RIT do that,” says Zang.

A recent patient of Dr. Zang’s has seen wonderful results from RIT.

A patient had been suffering from ankle pain after an injury and surgery three years

Dr. Zang recognized that the patient was skeptical, and explained, “I’ve seen excellent results with ongoing pain after prior surgeries, and believed he had on opportunity to benefit as well. I advised him it could take a bit of time, but it may offer the relief he needed.” A few months after the injection, the patient noticed the pain was nearly gone. Soon after, he realized, “I [haven’t] noticed any pain…this is an unbelievable outcome so far, and I thought this could never happen. The shot works!”

Dr. Kerry Zang, a Diplomate of the American Board of Foot & Surgery, is the Podiatric Medical Director at CIC Foot & Ankle and can be reached at (602) 954-0777 or azfeet.com.

OUT OF THE BOX

Woodcrafter Barry Oleksak creates sculptures that capture the imagination

The provocative wood and glass sculptures of artist Barry Oleksak reflect his fascination with geometry, color, space, and nature – they almost dare viewers to look away.

For the past six years, Oleksak has been pursuing a labor of love – creating bold and whimsical sculptures from high-quality wood and Youghgiogheny glass from Pennsylvania. Examples of the woods he works with are quilted maple, mesquite, leopard wood, walnut burl, and roasted walnut. He adds depth with geometric shapes like stripes, repeating circles, lines, and squares.

Boxes were the precursor to Oleksak’s sculptures. “The colors just popped out,” he says. “The look of the natural wood in conjunction with glass was beautiful, and soon I started pushing the boundaries of what a box is. I wanted to start creating sculptures more than utilitarian objects.”

An electric scroll saw and Dremel allow the artist to transform the two organic materials into eclectic pieces that dazzle the eye and ignite the imagination.

Oleksak’s affinity toward design class in high school led him to enroll in the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New York City. His degree led to work in a diversity of fields: freelance art illustration, graphic design, web services, marketing, professional videotaping, and photography.

Twenty-five years ago, Oleksak began experimenting with wood as a hobby. “My partner and I needed a dining-room table, and I thought I’d try my hand at creating one. I wanted it to reflect the ‘arts and crafts’ movement of the early 1900s,” he says. “It was known for beautiful and well-made objects made of high-quality design inspired by nature.”

Referring to old catalogs for inspiration, Oleksak created a table devoid of screws; it was pegged, dowelled, and glued. He continued building pieces, such as stained-glass lamps, TV stands, bookcases, and cabinets with hand-hammered copper hardware. “Pretty soon, there was no more room for any more furniture,” he says. “That’s when I decided to create something smaller and portable that I could sell at galleries and shows.”

One of Oleksak’s best-selling pieces is a jewelry box enhanced with 10 luminous layers of glass, each one representing a layer of the Grand Canyon. Examples of the layers include the river, rock, upper layers of sandstone and limestone, the sky, and life on the rim. “My passion for creating and sheer love of materials is what drives me,” the artist says. “I love watching people interacting with my creations. They open the boxes because they are curious about what’s in them, and they examine my sculptures closely to feel the texture and explore the colors.”

Oleksak’s creations have been displayed at the Shemer Art Center as well as Thunderbird Art Festivals. Learn more at www.thunderriverstudio.com.

WHY ARE CANCER RATES RISING IN ADULTS UNDER 50?

One of the most common risk factors for cancer is something we can’t do anything about—age. Our cancer risk increases as we get older, with the average age at diagnosis hovering around 68.

But a new study in Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology says that over the last few decades, doctors have been seeing dramatic increases in cancer in adults younger than 50. The disturbing trend has scientists searching for:

• Reasons behind the sharp increase in early-onset cancer

• How best to screen for or detect cancers in young adults

• Whether the cancers are different types of common cancers in older adults

• Which treatments show promise for younger people

Cancers in the under-50 age group may foreshadow an “emerging pandemic,” says the study’s researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Cancer patients under 50 are at a different point in their lives than the typical, older patient: They may be students, parents of young children, family breadwinners or caregivers to aging parents. Their cancer treatments may mean a different financial burden, one that hits during their prime incomeearning years. They may also face higher risks of other health issues, including infertility, heart disease and secondary cancers.

“Young adults often have a more challenging landscape than older adults diagnosed with cancer,” says Toufic Kachaamy, MD, Interventional Program Specialist and Chief of Medicine at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA), Phoenix (he was not involved in the study). “When you’re 40 and get cancer, there’s a good chance that you’ve never been sick before. One day, you’re out to dinner or a party, the next thing you know, you’re on chemotherapy.”

While increased screening may partially explain the rising number of early-onset diagnoses, researchers say that doesn’t tell the whole story.

“Evidence suggests that the earliest phase of carcinogenesis might start in early life or young adulthood, followed by intervals of up to several decades between initial cellular damage and clinical cancer detection,” the study’s authors wrote.

Since the mid-20th century, many unhealthy changes have affected diet, lifestyle, obesity, the environment and our microbiomes. Those changes may now be occurring earlier in life and may be making humans more susceptible to cancer at a younger age. Studies also suggest the increase in early-onset cancers may be part of the growing trend in chronic diseases affecting younger adults.

If you’re a parent or thinking about becoming one, your concern about early-onset cancer should extend to your children. The study says that a woman’s smoking, diet, alcohol consumption and obesity during pregnancy may play roles in her child’s future cancer risk. Providing your children with healthy meals, limiting processed and sugary foods in their diets, encouraging them to exercise, watching their weight and avoiding their exposure to second-hand smoke may help reduce their future cancer risk at a time when they’re too young to make good choices for themselves.

“We found that this risk is increasing with each generation,” says Shuji Ogino, MD, PhD, a professor and physician-scientist in the Department of Pathology at Brigham who was involved with the study. “For instance, people born in 1960 experienced higher cancer risk before they turn 50 than people born in 1950, and we predict that this risk level will continue to climb in successive generations.”

HOW CAN PEOPLE UNDER 50 REDUCE THEIR CANCER RISK?

The Brigham researchers say preventing early-onset cancer may have to include promoting healthy diets and lifestyles in childhood and adolescence, discouraging smoking and alcohol consumption in those age groups, and encouraging physical exercise.

The authors say reforming food production may also help, so consumers have more

choices than ultra-processed foods and drinks. They also say government actions, such as taxing sugar-sweetened beverages, may have an impact in discouraging unhealthy behaviors.

“I am personally optimistic that with essential education of the public worldwide, beginning with school-age children, and with concerted efforts to impact governmental policy, we will be able to have a major positive impact on controllable factors that increase cancer risk,” says Maurie Markman, MD, President of Medicine & Science at CTCA® (he was not part of the study).

To make a difference:

Exercise: Staying physically active helps to avoid a sedentary lifestyle. Even a modest amount of exercise each week, including brisk walks, may have an impact.

Eat healthy: A plant-based or Mediterranean diet reduces many cancer-related risk factors. These diets are high in fiber and lean protein and include fruits and vegetables that may help promote healthy gut bacteria in the microbiome, along with beans, whole grains and nuts, while limiting the amount of red meat and processed foods.

Maintain a healthy weight: Being obese or overweight increases the risk of cancer, so avoid a BMI higher than 30.

Don’t smoke: The carcinogens in tobacco smoke not only affect the lungs, but they also travel through the bloodstream and may increase the risk of digestive tract cancers and other cancers as well.

Drink in moderation: No amount of drinking is safe because of the damage alcohol may do to your cells. Health professionals recommend no more than one alcoholic drink per day for women and no more than two a day for men. Get vaccinated: Vaccines are available against cancer-causing viruses such as the human papilloma virus (HPV) and the hepatitis-B virus (HBV).

2023 LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER

The newly remodeled SUV proves why it’s still first in its class

Facing increasingly fierce competition among other luxe SUV competitors, the new fifth-generation Range Rover has been entirely reshaped, taking luxury, design, and performance to even loftier new heights.

With intoxicating grandeur, peerless design sophistication, a near-perfect blend of off-road bona fide performance with cossetting luxury and comfort, Range Rover was once a class of one in the luxe SUV market. Today, as nearly every luxury brand is obsessing over SUVs, Range Rover is working even harder to reassure discriminating six-figure bespoke-level buyers of its worth.

What’s new about Range Rover is really new and big – really big. At least 40% of buyers are choosing the LWB (long wheelbase) models, which are nearly a foot longer overall than before and include an 8-inch wheelbase stretch with extensive middle- and third-row seating.

While the Rover is among the world’s most cosseting SUVs, it also earns its chops on and off-road. Two engine options are available:

a 3.0-liter turbocharged-supercharged inline six with a mild-hybrid assist that delivers 395 horsepower and 406 pound-feetof torque, or a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter 523 horsepower V8 with 553 pound-feet of torque. Either engine easily powers the Rover with ease that’s delivered through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Rover’s body is silky smooth and gorgeous but the biggest attention grabber is the opulent cabin finished with the finest of leather hides, metals and wood veneers. The extravagance peaks with the $19,740 Signature Suite option, which adds airline-style reclining massaging rear seats, a motorized club table, a hidden refrigerator, crystal Champagne flutes, and more.

For a heafty charge (beyond $250,000) the SV Signature Suite version comes with a long list of extra amenities.

A week of testing this enormously comfortable, expensive, commanding vehicle proved that it is a must-have status vehicle of celebrity existential otherness.

SPOTLIGHT: LIVABLE ART

An astounding piece of livable art, this Desert Mountain home is available on the market for the first time.

The origin of the home is unique as the construction process spanned 12 years, with the home emerging organically from the desert 18 inches at a time, utilizing rammed earth, steel, glass, and stone.

The dwelling combines artistic creativity and functional living, beginning with the commanding storefront door which opens to a central courtyard, sited on a peninsula between two arroyos. Here, Sonoran plants and landscape go from just accessories to living art.

The home has floor-to-ceiling glass walls, which surround the intimate courtyard and help to create seamless indoor-outdoor living.

The estate features three bedrooms as well as three full and three half-bathrooms. Upon entering, guests will find a gourmet stainless-steel kitchen, accented by an overhead hanging aluminum origami structure. There is also a butler’s pantry and dining space.

The great room, which is surrounded by four pivoting glass walls that lead outdoors, offers panoramic views of the Valley.

Accessible through a steel telescoping door, the main floor primary suite features rammed earth walls with onyx insets, origami metal ceiling structures and an equally impressive bathroom with a bath, a shower, two vanities, walls and floors all created with onyx. Here, indoor-outdoor living continues, with a pivoting shower wall that opens to a private courtyard with a firepit and sunken bench.

A 65-foot glass floor bridge leads to two guests suites, each boasting its own texture and history. Once down a suspended steel staircase, dwellers will find a media room, a powder room, a wine cellar, and an audio-visual room. The estate also features a fitness room, a spa, a library and a breakfast/wet bar. Membership to the Desert Mountain Club is available.

BIENVENIDO A MIAMI

The southern Florida hot spot offers something for everyone this spring

Home to the largest collection of art deco architecture in the world, not to mention the largest subtropical wilderness and some of the most exclusive resorts, beaches, and restaurants in the United States, there are few places on the planet hotter than Miami, no matter the time of year.

The weather in the region is wetter and more humid than in the Valley, but during the spring and early summer months it is rarely creeps above 90 degrees or below 50 degrees, making this season the sneaky best time to take advantage of everything Miami has to offer.

Outdoor Adventures

There are more than a dozen pristine, white sand beaches in the area, including the iconic Miami Beach – South, commonly known as South Beach, and its sister beaches, conveniently named Mid Beach and North Beach. South Beach is just as it is portrayed in popular culture, from its multicolored lifeguard stands to its opulent oceanfront dining along see-and-be-seen Ocean Drive. It gets a bit quieter at Mid Beach, which is more popular for joggers and bicycling, and then North Beach skews a bit older with more of a cafe vibe than party feel. Those looking to explore the art deco scene across Miami will likely find the most concentration of tours and sites adjacent to this family of beaches, most prominently in the preserved Art Deco Historic District. Outside of Miami Beach, if with family, consider Crandon Park Beach, which has a family entertainment center. If keen to indulge in pure luxury, head to Bal Harbor, which is lined with opulent resorts from end to end.

In a 180-degree twist from the various buzzy beach scenes, Miami-Dade County is also home to the protected Everglades National Park, a subtropical wetland ecosystem spanning 2 million acres across central and south Florida. It takes about an hour to drive from Miami’s bustling downtown scene to the vast rivers of dense grass and diverse wildlife, but the drive is well worth it, as is reserving one of its epic airboat tours. During most tours, notably those through Everglades Airboat Adventures, Everglades Holiday Park, Wild Florida Airboats & Gator Park, and River of Grass Adventures, professional guides maneuver the airboats at varying speeds through the wetlands, allowing for time to seek out the area’s ample alligator and crocodile populations (yes, both call the area home!). Tours also showcase a host of other species including more than 360 types of birds and nearly 30 types of snakes plus fish, turtles, manatees, bottlenose dolphins, and

102 So Scottsdale! February ‘23 Luxe PLACES

even the endangered Florida panther. Many airboat operators are connected to area animal sanctuaries as well, so visitors should consider a double ticket if available.

Food & Drink

There are an estimated 10,000 culinary hotspots in the greater downtown area of Miami alone, meaning there is not only something for everyone, but something new for everyone to try. Most spots focus on one or more international flavors, with many taking inspiration from a combination of Cuba, Haiti, Peru, Colombia, India, Thailand, Jamaica, Japan, and Argentina, though there are plenty of more traditional fine dining steak, seafood, and Italian eateries as well. There are several alcoves within Miami, in fact, that offer full neighborhoods focused on a particular cuisine, including Little Havana, which is overflowing with all things Latin; Little Haiti, known for its Creole and Caribbean cuisine; and Historic Overtown, Liberty City and Coconut Grove Village West, each of which takes great pride in authentic Soul food.

Given the weather and miles of picturesque waterfront property, many of the best spots for fine dining also have ample, extravagant patios, such as Lido Bayside Grill At The Standard, La Mar By Gastón Acurio, Juvia, and Dilido Beach Club.

The sheer number of flavors from which to sip and savor can be daunting. A good rule of thumb if a foodie: book one or more food tours while in the area, many of which also feature historic factoids along the way and can be customized to suit the particular taste of the group. Among the best are Miami Culinary Tours, Miami Secret Food Tours, and Miami Food Tours.

Accommodations

As with the food and drink options in the area, there are exclusive resorts around every turn in Miami. Given this, why not choose one with a story to tell? Two of the best spots with the wildest of stories are The Villa Casa Casuarina At The Former Versace Mansion and Fontainebleau Miami Beach. The Villa, already famous in the 90s as the home of beloved fashion designer Gianni Versace, became infamous when serial killer Andrew Cunanan tragically murdered Versace as he tried to enter his home in 1997. Today, the three-story spectacular features 10 epic suites and a pool lined with 24-karat gold.

Though more than $1 billion has been poured into it in updates over the years, The Fontainebleau was originally built by Ben Novack, Sr., and he lived in the resort with his wife and son, Ben Novack, Jr. Years later, eccentric adult Novack, Jr. and his mother were murdered under odd circumstances, and though they were not killed at the hotel, as its original heirs, their harrowing story lives on in its walls. Beyond the intrigue, it is one of the finest resorts in the world, with an award-winning 40,000-square-foot spa, elegant suites, and a culinary lineup that includes Hakkasan, two-level beach club La Cote, interactive Chez Bon Bon, Scarpetta by Scott Conant, and StripSteak by Michael Mina.

AN ODE TO ARIZONA

Sip the flavors of the Sonoran Desert with drinks using locally made spirits

February 14 is more than just Valentine’s Day in Arizona. On that date in 1912, Arizona formally became the 48th state in the Union. Looking for a fun way to celebrate? Try one of these cocktails, each featuring a distilled spirit or spirits made right here in The Grand Canyon State.

Sonoita Sour

FnB Restaurant

A double shot at local love, this cocktail uses award-winning Del Bac Whiskey as its base spirit, which is based in Tucson and is unique in that it is made using smoky mesquite from the Sonoran Desert. It is paired simply with lemon juice and then topped with a float of fortified 2019 Callaghan Red Dessert Wine from Elgin. $17. www.fnbrestaurant.com.

Jale Berry

Fat Ox

This refreshing cocktail is made with Tequila Corrido Blanco, which is owned by the restaurant’s co-founder and known for its hints of citrus and a kick of spice. It is mixed with Bauchant Orange Liqueur, fresh lime juice, blackberry puree and sliced jalapeno. $18. www.ilovefatox.com.

CRUsin’ Together

CRUjiente Tacos

This sweet and spicy sipper starts with Corcel Blanco Tequila, a local tequila purveyor that sources from the Guadalajara region of Mexico, and floral elderflower liqueur. The spirits are combined with equal parts tropical passionfruit, strawberry, and freshly squeezed lemon juices, and then the cocktail is finished with cayenne pepper for a kick. $13. www.crutacos.com.

Scottsdale Skinny

Thompson 105

The Scottsdale Skinny is a premium take on a spritzer and made for those counting calories or with dietary restrictions in mind. It starts with ROXX Vodka, which is an ultra-smooth premium vodka based in Scottsdale. The ROXX is paired with a hint of Domain Canton

Ginger Liqueur and then topped with bubbly and effervescent sparkling citrus water and fresh mint. $14. www.thompson105.com.

Pick Your Poison

The Genuine

This customizable bloody mary asks guests to choose from several of O.H.S.O.’s Arcadia line of vodkas, including Arcadia Horseradish and Arcadia Jalapeno, or opt for Canyon Spirits Two Ghosts Vodka, which is made with Bhut Jolokia, one of the world’s hottest chili peppers. The vodka is combined with house bloody mary mix and then garnished with an olive and a lemon wheel. $11. www.thegenuineaz.com.

Midnight Train Pigtails

The popular hidden Desert Ridge bar sources its own private barrel of Arizona Distilling Company’s famed Copper City Bourbon for this cocktail. The bourbon is enhanced by rhubarb, blackberry and lemon juices, and is balanced with orange bitters. It is topped with a cabernet float to add visual appeal and a more layered flavor profile. $15. www.pigtailscocktails. com.

Scottsdale Sunset

Blue Clover

Given this Scottsdale restaurant doubles as a distillery, expect a full menu of cocktails infused with spirits that are made right on property. This twist on an Aperol spritz is especially refreshing thanks to its plentiful pour of Blue Clover Grapefruit Vodka. The vodka is combined with Aperol, prosecco, and lemon as with a traditional spritz, but then gets a dash or two of lavender bitters as well. $13. www.bluecloverdistillery.com.

DRINK / CHEERS / CUISINE / FOOD FILES / DINING GUIDE

Known for its handcrafted approach to modern Italian dining, North Italia – a beloved Kierland Commons staple since 2002 – continues to make mouths water by innovating new dishes each season. Among its most popular winter menu offerings is the Crispy Eggplant Parmesan ($15). To make, whole eggplant is peeled and sliced to into disks before being salted and set aside to marinate. The disks are then coated with flour and egg washed before being covered with panko, Grana Padano cheese and Italian herbs. After a quick fry, the disks are placed into an iron skillet and topped with creamy Calabrian chili-infused vodka sauce, provolone and mozzarella. The skillet is baked until the cheese is melted, then it’s garnished with oil, additional Grana Padano, and torn basil. The result: A hearty, warming dish with a hint of spice and ample gooey cheese. AMOROUS ELIXIR

50 Shades of Rosé plays cupid with the sweet, floral Love Potion

Femininity rules at 50 Shades of Rosé, which recently opened at Indian Plaza. The light, bright bar is awash in red and pink with art installations, neon signs, and more than 10,000 imitation roses hung in every direction, and every drink is designed with dames in mind.

“People are often surprised we have a full menu of shot options beyond our signature and shareable offerings,” says Ben Foreman, owner of the bar. “Rather than headache-inducing options you might force down on your 21st birthday, each of our shots is a show.”

According to Foreman, copious research and development, including months sourcing unique vessels, went into finalizing each shot on the menu. Of note is the head-turning Love Potion ($10).

“For about 20 years, Tiffany & Co. necklaces and bracelets with distinctive heart-shaped charms were the jewelry of choice for what seemed every female on Earth,” Foreman says. “When we found small heart-shaped glasses that resembled those charms, we knew we had to find a way to showcase them.”

Foreman and his team decided early on to make the shot a bold red color.

“We didn’t want to just choose a cherry flavor to match the color and be done with it, so instead we decided to do a play on the pineapple upside-down cake cocktail by combining Absolut Vanilla vodka with grenadine and fresh pineapple juice.”

Once given a good shake with ice, the ingredients take on the grenadine’s red hue before being strained into the heart-shaped glass, which is then sealed.

“Meant to be opened tableside, the shot is sweet and tropical with a fruity finish and light tartness from the pineapple,” Foreman says. “It tastes like falling in love in an island paradise.”

CHEF CONVERSATIONS

In the kitchen with Yulissa Acosta of Hearth ’61

Yulissa Acosta is the chef de cuisine of Hearth ’61 at Mountain Shadows. Her focus is letting seasonal ingredients inspire her rustic, modern American dishes.

What inspired you to cook?

I was born in Mexico and though I moved to the Valley at 4, we had a traditional Hispanic household. And the unwritten rule of a Hispanic household: everyone helps out in the kitchen. That said, it wasn’t until a chance high school class that I considered cooking professionally.

What was the class?

Junior year, my friends signed up for a culinary arts elective, so I did too. Next thing I know, I was glued to the cooking competitions we watched and eager to dream up my own dishes. Through the class, I was accepted into Arizona’s Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP). That set me on the trajectory to Mountain Shadows.

Tell us about that trajectory.

Thanks to C-CAP, Bink’s Midtown hired me at 17. There, I had the chance to see Kevin Binkley in action while learning under Brandon Gauthier, now chef-owner of Confluence. It was trial by fire, but I was up for the challenge. I moved to Bink’s Kitchen and Bar and then Mirabel Golf Club before going to Hearth ’61 in 2017.

Most memorable kitchen moment:

When with Bink’s, Alfred Muro – who today oversees all culinary outlets at Mountain Shadows – partnered with us for a wine dinner during a storm. When we lost power, I will never forget the man who became my mentor, finding a way to grill steak in complete darkness. I try to have the same “nothing can stop us” approach as a leader.

Tell us about your menu.

Guests will love our locally sourced ingredients, notably from McClendon's Select, Duncan Family Farms, Crow's Dairy, Two Wash Ranch and more. On the current menu, do not miss the tenderloin. We have perfected a multiday process to marinate the seemingly simple meat and its accompaniments that will change the way you think of the protein forever. I also adore the hiramasa crudo, especially its harissa- and citrus-infused sauce.

Something surprising about me is: I love heavy metal, especially Slipknot, Disturbed and Five Finger Death Punch.

Comfort food for cooler nights, this dish is bursting with fresh jumbo shrimp, succulent scallops, and flavorful salmon, all of which are swimming in a savory green curry coconut sauce. Fragrant and slightly sweeter than its yellow or red curry counterparts, it is made with cherry tomatoes for a touch of acidity as well as lemongrass, lime and cilantro for a kiss of citrus before being finished with coconut milk to elicit a rich texture. $22. www.lingandlouies.com.

Cold Water Mussels

Humble Bistro

These fresh cold-water mussels are offered with diner’s choice of two different sauces, one inspired by European flavors and the other of Latin flavors. The Cioppino version of the dish has a Calabrian chili-infused red sauce with garlic confit, citrus zest, fresh parsley, chili flakes, and sea salt. Alternatively, guests may opt for a pinot grigio-based white wine sauce iteration of the dish, which is made using shallots, garlic confit, whole grain mustard, parsley, chili flakes, lemon, butter, and sea salt. $23. www.humblebistro.com.

Birria Bao Buns

The Mexicano

Sauce, when prepared properly, dresses up any dish, infusing it with moisture, adding a depth of flavor, and creating a contrast of colors and textures on the plate. Here are some sensational uses of sauce being spotlighted on local menus right now.

Though the two fluffy bao buns on this plate –which are made with slightly sweet dough and resemble clouds – are delicious on their own, they are made even better by the chili-marinated shredded beef and melted cheese stuffed inside. However, it is the sauce – a specialty consomme – that makes this new menu item so special. The savory consomme is made with beef broth, guajillo chiles, ancho chiles, garlic, onion, and a variety of spices, and it is slow cooked for hours to allow every single ingredient to shine. The buns are then topped with cilantro, chopped onions and melty menonita and asadero cheeses. $16. www.themexicano.com.

Scaloppine al Gorgonzola

Marcellino Ristorante

Here, thin slices of tender veal are sauteed in extra virgin olive oil, rendering them even more succulent. They are then covered in an indulgent dressing of velvety gorgonzola sauce, made with equal parts cheese and cream as well as a smattering of Italian herbs. The result is the ideal balance of tanginess and richness, complemented with earthy potatoes and roasted seasonal vegetables. $38. www. marcellinoristorante.com.

Copper Ranch Prime NY Strip

Lon’s at The Hermosa

The steak is also served with fried pickled potatoes and mushrooms. $59. www.lons.com.
