ASK CHRIS

HOA Rules Must Be Reasonable

Q:

We live in an HOA community in North Scottsdale. We have two French poodles that we walk in the community, and we carry a “scoop and bag” to clean up any mess. Last week, our HOA Board of Directors passed a Rule that requires DNA testing by the HOA of all dogs in the community. Although the DNA testing is free, there will be a fine of $250 against the owner of any dog that is not tested. The obvious purpose of this rule is to find the “bad” dog owners in our community who don’t clean up after their dogs. We are opposed, however, to any DNA testing of our two French poodles. Is this new Rule enforceable?

A:

Probably. Most CC&Rs provide that the Board of Directors has the right to adopt reasonable Rules for the HOA community, and to impose fines for a violation of these Rules. Therefore, if there is a significant sanitation problem in the community with dog waste, this “DNA” Rule is probably reasonable.

Julie Macklowe goes from Horizon marching band to hottest whiskey maker on the market Today, New York business leader and socialite Julie Macklowe is a global phenomenon, conquering the worlds of finance, fashion and beauty while gracing the pages of Vogue, Forbes, and Page Six. But back in the 1990s, Macklowe was known as Julie Lerner (her maiden name), a talented student at Horizon High School in

Scottsdale, where she played trombone in the marching band, served as president of the chess club, and even landeded a spot on the golf team with future LPGA star Grace Park. “Admittedly, I was geeky, and proud of it. If there was an academic club, I was a member. If there was something math related, I was signed up to do it,” says Macklowe, who was born So Scottsdale! December ‘23

35

Pulse UP CLOSE in Aspen, Colorado, and moved to Scottsdale when she was in fifth grade. “Geek or not, I lived for the Contempo Casuals window at Paradise Valley Mall, CrackerJax, the Blockbuster Video on Tatum and Thunderbird, and making the ‘long drive’ to the posh Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall like any other kids in the area at the time.”

Love & Business After graduating fourth in her class in 1996, Macklowe made the decision to move to the East Coast, where her parents were born and raised, to continue her education, earning a scholarship to the prestigious University of Virginia McIntire School of Commerce. There, she poured herself into her studies, earning both a Bachelor of Arts in economics and Bachelor of Science in commerce. She graduated magna cum laude with both degrees in 1999. “While in college, a big turning point in my life came thanks to a fateful internship with Goldman Sachs, which only accepted 60 interns nationwide in any given semester,” Macklowe says. “While the 80-hour weeks were tough, this internship set me on my path to global business and eventual serial entrepreneurialism.” The internship led Macklowe to a series of adventures working at hedge funds and in investment banking across the globe, including stints in Hong Kong and Tel Aviv, during which time she developed a unique hobby. “We got a per diem for food each day, and rather than blow it on a five-course tasting menu at the hot new restaurant, I started investing in interesting whiskies during my travels and at duty free shops at the many airports that became second homes during that time,” Macklowe says. While today it is commonplace for women to be involved in whiskey, 20 years ago Macklowe – who made a home for herself in New York City when not traveling – was an anomaly. By 25, Macklowe’s collection of these whiskies and business acumen were becoming that of legend, but so was her love life after being set up on a blind date with William S. Macklowe. The son of Harry B. Macklowe, an iconic American real estate developer and investor, and an up-and-coming titan in his own right, the two turned heads at society and Hamptons events for a year before marrying in 2004. While somehow managing to become a parent and navigate her new fame (including being named Vogue’s “It Girl” in 2008), Macklowe would go on to open her own hedge fund before diving headfirst into entrepreneurialism in 2010, investing in a startup fashion business called BaubleBar. Despite the recession, BaubleBar disrupted the entire fashion accessory industry and became a household name in short order. “My next focus, though I still sit on the BaubleBar board, was a pivot from fashion to beauty,” says Macklowe, who launched her own skin care company, vbeauté, in 2011. “We focused on the Home Shopping Network (HSN) for this effort, and it paid off; within a few years, we were among the fastest-growing beauty brands on the channel.”

36 So Scottsdale! December ‘23

Trailblazer in Taste There was only one thing in Macklowe’s life growing faster than her skin care brand: her whiskey collection. By the mid-2010s, her collection had grown to several thousand, as did her reputation as one of only 200 registered whiskey ambassadors certified with a perfect score worldwide. “There was just one thing missing from my collection: a luxury American single malt whiskey, meaning it is distilled from 100% malted barley at a single distillery,” Macklowe says. “That is because it didn’t exist, and I wanted to change that.” Laser-focused on creating the “Ferrari of whiskey” as Macklowe calls it, she quickly enlisted Scottish distiller and blender Ian MacMillan to turn dream into reality. “More than a master blender, Ian is a visionary. I’d long been a fan, enjoying the highly rated single malts he developed with Bunnahabhain, Tobermory and Deanston,” Macklowe says. “Once we got together, it was lightning in a bottle.” As a result, in 2021, The Macklowe – the first high-end American single malt whiskey – was born. The private edition, made in limited quantities and priced at $1,500 per bottle, was soon in eateries across New York including Jean-Georges, Restaurant Daniel, Eleven Madison Park, and Cipriani Downtown. “Building on its success, we recently launched The Macklowe Kentucky Gold Edition, which is aged 44 months but at the more accessible price point of $250,” Macklowe says. “It is exceptionally well-balanced and slightly nutty with warming with flavors of vanilla and ginger as well as a hypnotic kick of spice, so perfect for these cooler months.” Locally, the Gold Edition is available at Geordie’s at Wrigley Mansion, Christopher’s at Wrigley Mansion, MercBar, The Arizona Biltmore Resort, and more in coming months, with other Arizona restaurants and retailers set to add it over the next year. Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a leading and preventable cause of death in the U.S.

IF YOU...

Neuropathy or Poor Circulation?

Have difficulty walking without taking a break due to leg pain.

Wouldn’t it be great to say ‘later alligator to those nagging pains we think we have to get used to just because we’re getting older? “It’s not normal to have difficulty walking to your mailbox, it’s not normal to have constant leg pain or cramping,” says Dr. Joel Rainwater, chief medical officer of Comprehensive Integrated Care (CiC). “That’s not normal aging. It could be PAD.”

Have been treated for neuropathy and are still experiencing symptoms…

Poor circulation or PAD (peripheral artery disease) is caused by the buildup of fatty material inside the arteries which limits blood flow. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients that your legs and feet need to stay healthy. “If you have poor circulation, your body will tell you. Your feet may feel numb or at night you might have to dangle your legs over the side of the bed to relieve a cramp in your foot.” PAD is often confused with neuropathy, as the symptoms are so similar. Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that involves damage to the nerves in your feet. In many cases, it’s caused by diabetes, but poor circulation can play a role and make the symptoms feel worse. The good news is specialists like Dr. Rainwater are able to treat PAD with a minimally invasive procedure. Using advanced imaging they are able to go into the bloodstream through a tiny nick in the skin. “We’re able to see if there is a blockage and then remove it with special instruments,” explains Rainwater. “Once the plaque is removed, blood flow improves.” Patients are home within hours and back to everyday activities with almost no downtime. Most insurance plans, including Medicare cover the treatment. If you are suffering from neuropathy or poor circulation, make an appointment to see a doctor. Or, if you’re not finding relief from medication or treatment, a second opinion may be helpful to determine the cause of the pain, cramping, or numbness in your feet.

Have pain, numbness, or cramping in your legs or feet.

FAMILIA FLAVORS

Call Her Martina shares the tastes and traditions of the Moreno family with Scottsdale diners

BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Nestled in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale sits Call Her Martina, a family-owned and -operated modern Mexican restaurant that exudes heart and soul. Founded in April 2022 by sisters Elisa Moreno and Paola Moreno, this culinary gem is a heartfelt tribute to the guiding stars of their childhood kitchen: their abuelas, Malucha and Kitty, and their mother, Cristina. “Our abuelas and mother taught us everything we know about food. We opened the restaurant to represent them,” Paola says. Martina is the restaurant personified. She embodies elegance, sensuality, mystery, and strength – all attributes of the sisters’ mother and abuelas as well as Mexican actresses from the la Epoca de Ora (the Golden Age of Mexican cinema), which inspired the restaurant’s name as well. When it comes to the menu, Call Her Martina (www.callhermartina.com), offers a dynamic rotation to embrace seasonal ingredients and flavors. Additionally, year-round, cherished family recipes secure their place, including Malucha’s Huevos Rancheros and Frijoles Refritos and Kitty’s revered Flan, prepared daily by her daughter, Cristina. Not only are the family’s matriarchs passionate about cooking, but the Moreno men also contribute significantly to the restaurant’s success. The sisters’ father dedicates himself to perfecting Call Her Martina’s rib-eye dishes, inspired by their hometown of Sonora, Mexico, revered for its exceptional carne asada. Meanwhile, their brother, Pedro “PJ,” oversees the bar and its menu. “Working together as a family has its challenges, but ultimately this project has helped us grow and become even closer,” Elisa says. Elisa and Paola are the restaurant’s jack of all trades. They handle front-of-house duties, with Paola as a server and Elisa wearing multiple hats as a server, host and assistant manager. Behind the scenes, Elisa manages marketing, public relations and branding, while Paola oversees design and purchasing decisions. “Between the two of us, we have built a brand we wholeheartedly stand by,” Paola says. While they continue to honor their abuelas at Call Her Martina, the sisters also have an exciting new venture in the works to further share their culture with Valley diners. “We love sharing what the restaurant industry is like in Mexico and want to create a concept that showcases that,” Elisa says.

GENUINELY CARING

Cesar Cramton prioritizes community while at the helm of Genuine Concepts

BY MELISSA HIRSCHL / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

In his younger days, Phoenix native Cesar Cramton dreamed of eventually owning a catering business. Today, he is the stylish and outgoing president of the Genuine Concepts restaurant enterprise, the creators of six iconic VIG restaurants scattered around the Valley. Cramton also oversees five more restaurants in the restaurant group’s constellation – The McMillan (located in Flagstaff), The Genuine, Campo Italian Bistro and Bar, The Womack, and The Little Woody. The brainchild of co-founders Tucker Woodbury and Jim Riley, the company has been on an upward trajectory ever since opening the original VIG in 2006 at Indian School Road and 40th Street in Phoenix. The common denominators of the VIG restaurants are the laid-back vibes, patios, music, wine, cocktails, and live entertainment. Cramton began his professional life with degrees in business and marketing from Scottsdale Community College and the University of Wisconsin. His foray into the corporate world began at Wisconsin City Market as a corporate event co-director and director of operations. With no love for frigid Wisconsin winters, Cramton returned home to Phoenix in 2006, where he discovered Genuine Concepts was the ideal fit for him. “I always wanted to work in the hospitality industry,” he says “I’m good with people, and I love the excitement of working in an ever-changing environment.” Cramton feels deeply about serving the community. In 2014, he spearheaded Community Handle, a philanthropic arm of Genuine Concepts. Every month, the company pairs with a local brewery, and $2 from every draft beer pint goes to a local nonprofit. This year’s nonprofit selection was Chrysalis, a charity dedicated to ending the cycle of domestic abuse. Cramton has a special affinity for Chrysalis due to his own life experience. He and his mother, Theresa Warford, both were the recipients of his father’s wrath during his childhood. “I escaped with my mom when I was age 7 in 1985,” says Cramton, noting he and Warford served as co-chairs of the philanthropy’s annual gala last month. “We literally left with the clothes on our back.” When Cramton is not polishing and refining the Genuine Concept brand, he is practicing for future Iron Man races or traveling. He and his partner have been to Costa Rica, Peru, Nepal, India, Iceland, Sweden, Peru, and Mexico City.

Pulse HIS STYLE

PALATE & PANACHE Emmanuel Urban’s style is as suave as the dishes he creates

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY AUGUSTO HERRERA

In the world of culinary arts, Emmanuel Urban stands as an epitome of both gastronomic prowess and sartorial finesse. As the culinary maestro behind the delectable creations at Talavera restaurant at Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale, Urban’s style journey mirrors his professional evolution. “Before becoming a chef de cuisine, I was not as careful with my appearance,” he says. “I have to be ready to greet a guest or meet a vendor, whether in my chef coat or street attire.” The influence of his culinary mentors from Barcelona, renowned for their impeccable and sophisticated presentation, is evident in Urban’s approach. “They always looked classy and well-presented. I aim to emulate that style,” he says. Urban’s signature style revolves around his hair, meticulously maintained and an integral part of his overall image. When not in his chef coat, Urban’s style embodies casual elegance, starting with his assortment of Adidas shoes. Urban favors brands like Banana Republic, Coach, and admires the classic style represented by high-end fashion, such as Carolina Herrera. Despite an appreciation for quality attire, he’s mindful of expenses, acknowledging the need to balance fashion with his culinary indulgences.

What will we see you in on weekdays vs. weekends? On workdays, you will find me in my chef coat. On my days off, I tend to favor jeans. I also am a huge Formula 1 fan, so you might find me in a jersey! What is your must-have fashion item? My Apple watch. I use it for both fashion and function. In the kitchen, it can help with simple tasks like setting a timer, as well as answering quick emails and texts. Do you find style inspiration on social media? I use social media to follow trends, but tend to be more classic in my style. For my anniversary or birthday, I will wear a jacket and tailored shirt, maybe high-end jeans and, of course, the perfect shoes!

Upward Projects CEO and Co-founder Lauren Bailey fuses eclectic elegance with versatile charm

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY AUGUSTO HERRERA

As the CEO and co-founder of Upward Projects – the group behind Valley favorites Postino, Windsor, Churn, Federal Pizza, and Joyride – Lauren Bailey is at the heart of the restaurant scene. She does it all while looking effortless and sophisticated, with a touch of the unexpected, a reflection of her dynamic role and career growth. As her role shifted from hands-on work in restaurants to strategizing and traveling, she has embraced a more refined yet eclectic style. “I’ve definitely become more discerning with my purchases,” Bailey says. “My signature look embraces darker patterns and jeans, complemented by quirky and unexpected heels.” Bailey draws inspiration from a diverse array of icons, like Kelly Wearstler. The fusion of vintage pieces and unique creations is a trait she admires and often incorporates into her personal style. While Bailey occasionally seeks inspiration from platforms like Pinterest, she stands by her individualistic interpretation of business casual, especially in a predominantly male-dominated industry. Unafraid to push boundaries, she’s set to don neon pink tights and heels at an upcoming finance conference.

What is your favorite store? I have been shopping at Last Chance since I was in college. I love a good bargain so you’ll find me zoning out in the basement there often! I love vintage stores and check them out whenever I am traveling. I enjoy The Real Real, Framed Ewe, Net-A-Porter, Matches and I always make sure and visit Kickpleat when I am in Houston and Bergdorf Goodman when in NYC. What is your must-have fashion item? My ‘The Row’ Black Blazer with dark blue silk lining. It is crazy comfortable, can be dressed up or down, fits me perfectly and it works with any environment or place. What is your most prized possession in your closet? My Tom Ford leather moto jacket. Total splurge. I want to wear it until I’m 90.

A Compassionate Advocate KELLEY DURHAM SUPPORTS CLIENTS THROUGH THE CHALLENGES OF INJURY CLAIMS Kelley Durham is dedicated to prioritizing the pursuit of justice for each client she serves. Facing a serious or catastrophic injury can be a life-altering experience, typically leading to undesirable changes. Persistent post-injury pain often hinders the performance of basic daily tasks, may result in prolonged periods of unemployment, and necessitates regular medical treatment to manage symptoms. In instances where the injury is not the fault of the individual, it is only just that compensation is sought for the pain and suffering endured. Kelley Durham, founder of K Durham Law PLLC, is committed to assisting those who have been injured through no fault of their own in obtaining the justice they rightly deserve. “I always knew I wanted to help people,” affirms Durham. Durham embarked on her legal career as a legal assistant, gaining comprehensive knowledge of the industry before progressing through law school, eventually becoming a paralegal and associate attorney. “Upon becoming a legal assistant at a personal injury law firm, I recognized that this was my calling,” she reflects. “It was a means to advocate for the individuals unjustly injured against the formidable insurance companies and billion-dollar corporations.” In 2015, with over sixteen years of experience, Durham established her own firm, K Durham Law PLLC. Understanding the challenges confronted by accident victims, Durham and her team are dedicated to offering compassionate yet assertive personalized representation for each client. Setting her apart from other attorneys who may view clients solely as financial opportunities, Durham takes the time to truly understand each individual. Her exceptional bedside manner and service-oriented focus make her unparalleled in advocating for her clients. “When a client contacts our office, they are not just a file or case number; we know who they are,” Durham emphasizes. “I invest time in listening to and comprehending each client to better serve them, recognizing that each case is unique and every client is distinct,” she adds. “Every client is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.” Following detailed personalized attention, Durham employs an aggressive approach in developing a strategy that ensures the best possible outcome for her clients. In her own practice, Durham strives to dispel any negative associations that clients may hold against personal injury firms. Whether a victim of a trucking or automobile crash, slip and fall, negligent security matter, dog mauling, medical malpractice, or

vaccine injury, Durham is fervent about delivering results. She emphasizes that individual attempts to handle such cases frequently result in smaller settlements and unclaimed money in terms of insurance, lost income, and other areas that victims are unfamiliar with. Beyond her legal endeavors, Durham has actively contributed to her community for decades, serving on the City of Mesa Judicial Advisory Board, the Know Cares Fundraising Committee, the Wildest Club in Town, acting as a mentor at SHE Leads!, and presiding as President of the Phoenix Zoo Auxiliary. A Passion for Real Estate Law CHRISTOPHER COMBS, PRESIDENT OF COMBS LAW GROUP, HAS A DEEP-SEATED COMMITMENT TO HIS CRAFT Combs Law Group, P.C. sets itself apart from other Arizona real estate law firms by working with clients to develop smart, strategic, and practical solutions. Top Arizona real estate lawyer Chris Combs and Combs Law Group, P.C. attorneys achieve excellent results for their clients in a wide array of real estate legal areas of practice. These areas of practice include general real estate law, business law, litigation, as well as arbitration and mediation. Christopher (Chris) Combs lives and breathes real estate law. After earning a bachelor’s degree in political science from Arizona State University, he studied at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law, where he penned articles for the Arizona Law Review, a student-run academic legal journal. Combs would go on a medley of different adventures postlaw school. And while each was different in its own right, they all focused on his passion for law. For instance, he was a captain in the United States Marine Corps’ Judge Advocate Division, “a distinction reserved for the few who have what it takes mentally, morally and physically,” according to Marines.com. In 1990, he established Combs Law Group, a boutique real estate law firm in the Biltmore neighborhood. Combs and his team of experienced real estate litigators and trusted transactional advisors offer premium legal representation to large companies, small businesses and individuals. From real estate and commercial disputes to disclosure issues to foreclosures and forfeitures and beyond, Combs Law Group specializes in it all. “Real estate law is fascinating to me, and it has so much history. For example, an “X” on a rock was deemed in early English law to be a signature to comply with the statute of frauds.” Combs continues, “Also, the law of adverse possession arose because the King of England wanted land to be used, so land had higher value with increased tax revenue.” When he isn’t in-office helping clients with their legal needs, Combs leans on his experience as a former Arizona Law Review member and writes. More specifically, he answers the public’s law- and real estate-related questions every Sunday in The Arizona Republic. If you miss his column, don’t fret. Combs archives each question/answer online at www.combslawgroup. com/articles. “Even in law school, I enjoyed the Socratic method of teaching based on questions and answers. I think readers understand legal principles better in that Q&A format,” Combs says. He also enjoys traveling the world to educate others on

the Foreign Investment in Real Estate Property Act and other aspects of foreign investment in Arizona real estate. He has given lectures in Asia, Mexico and Canada and has represented foreign investors in the Valley from these countries. Apart from real estate law, Combs is an avid sports fan. Some of his favorite teams include the Phoenix Suns and Pittsburgh Pirates. Combs is a former member of the Pittsburgh Pirates minor league baseball organization, and while he served in the United States Marine Corps, he was on the AllMarine Corps basketball team. SITTING CROOKED & TALKING STRAIGHT: AN AUTO INDUSTRY PRO ON WHAT TO EXPECT IN 2024 Shahe Koulloukian, Owner of Mazvo Auto Care Center, examines the ever-changing automotive landscape. THE AUTO INDUSTRY has faced many unexpected challenges in the last few years, from fluctuating interest rates and demand to touchless car purchasing through kiosks — and as a trusted industry pro, Shahe Koulloukian prides himself on helping car owners make sense of it all. From a standup comedian to a feature film actor, professional chef, and owner of Mazvo Auto Care, renaissance man Koulloukian is adding “author” to his list of accomplishments with the highly anticipated release of Car Confidential: Insider Secrets About Automobile Ownership, Car Maintenance and Road Safety. It is an owner’s manual for the car owner, not the car. Koulloukian distills 40 years of hard-earned wisdom in the automotive world into an easy-to-read guide that covers the essential areas of car ownership. Additionally, Car Confidential shares valuable industry gems that could save you thousands of dollars. Koulloukian brings a unique blend of professional and personal experiences to the book, making it an instant classic for anyone who has ever owned a set of wheels. In light of Koulloukian’s quest to empower every car owner with knowledge, we asked him what hurdles drivers will likely face in the coming year — and, infused with his signature wit, his answers did not disappoint. Here’s what he had to say. SKY-HIGH REPAIR COSTS: The complexity of modern vehicles has mechanics pulling out diagnostic tools more intricate than a Mars Rover. Say goodbye to fiddling and tinkering in the garage and say hello to crying in the waiting room. SUPPLY CHAIN SHENANIGANS: Due to everyone’s favorite thing — supply chain issues — you might find yourself waiting months for a simple part. Patience, young Padawan. Thank goodness for Starbucks!

CRYPTO-CRAZE: Heard of NFTs? That’s “Not Fixable Today” for you non-geeks. Digital currency is creeping into the car buying scene, making financial transactions more confusing than understanding a French road sign. INSURANCE IRRITATION: Algorithms now calculate insurance premiums based on how many times you passed gas in the passenger seat last month, your dog’s zodiac sign, and whether Mercury is in retrograde. SELF-DRIVING DILEMMA: Do you trust a computer to drive you home after your night out? Or do you stick to the traditional DUI — Driving Under the Influence of your own bad decisions? ECO-FRIENDLY PRESSURE: It’s cool to be green … until you realize that means giving up your V8-powered, exhaust-belching monster truck. Sacrifices, sacrifices. GAS PRICE PUZZLES: Gas prices are more unpredictable than a cat on a hot tin roof. One day you’re sailing; the next, you’re considering trading your firstborn for a full tank.

ROADWAY RODEO: Infrastructure is decaying faster than the moral fiber of our society. Construction workers have all gone to Denny’s for breakfast. Potholes are turning commutes into obstacle courses, requiring the agility of a gazelle and the nerves of a bomb defuser. CAR HACKING: No, not turning your sedan into a convertible with a chainsaw. Modern cars are susceptible to hacking, so now your car might catch a virus before you do! Wrapping up the recap of the challenges car owners will continue to face as we head into 2024, Koulloukian shared some wisdom. “Navigating the current automotive landscape requires an equal mix of caution and initiative,” he says. “This year has demonstrated how change is constant; yet information and knowledge can serve as your greatest guides on this journey to making informed decisions, avoiding potential pitfalls, and turning challenges into opportunities.” Koulloukian’s book, Car Confidential, is currently available at Amazon & at other major book retailers in December.

FASCINATING FIGURES

Figurative artist Michael Carson will debut his latest collection at Bonner David Galleries

BY MELISSA HIRSCHL

72 So Scottsdale! December ‘23

Bonner David Galleries, a downtown Scottsdale art district staple, will have a new and provocative show this month for art enthusiasts with the work of renowned figurative artist Michael Carson. The Phoenix-based artist will be debut his latest collection, Canvassed, with a show that will run through Dec. 30. The new exhibit reflects the artist’s switch from canvas to boards and back to canvas six months ago. “I found I now like working on larger canvases,” Carson says. “Plus, I can thumbtack them on my wall, and I can be more physical while painting them. I can also focus on shapes and little areas more to make them pop out.” A self-described “people watcher,” Carson is an astute observer of people in varying situations. As a perpetual experimenter, he combines geometric aspects, light, color, scale, and architectural details to create figures with a bit of mystery shrouded in ambiguous backgrounds. Gallery visitors can also look forward to viewing Carson’s “alter ego” of creativity. During COVID-19, he discovered the satisfaction of creating nonacoustic wood guitars, replete with miniature renditions of his art on the back. Four of them will be on display. “I originally set my sights on becoming a professional musician, but stage fright got in the way,” says Carson, who will also be showcasing a new sculpture made from wood and bronze. Carson’s career arc started early. “I still have my first drawing from when I was 3 as the first evidence,” he says. “At 5, I created floor plans, as my mom was an interior designer.” With his instincts for the mechanical aspect of art, Carson later enrolled in the Minnesota College of Art and Design. He soon set out to create product designs for seasonal giftware. Ironically, visiting an Amsterdam gallery provided the magic spark that led to a major career shift. Within a month, he quit his job and dove headfirst into the life of a full-time artist. Carson began his career by painting landscapes, animals and still life. It took a brutally honest art gallery owner to point him to his “north star” of figurative painting. He also mentored Carson on the value of marketing and advertising, a game-changer for the artist. Carson was discovered by Bonner David Galleries 18 years ago through his ad in the American Art Collection magazine. “Our well-loved figurative artist Michael Carson always pushes boundaries when painting his favorite subject, the figure,” says Christi Manuelito, partner, founder and art consultant of Bonner David Galleries. “His exhibition is a local favorite among art collectors, and many of them fly to Scottsdale from other countries just to view and add his exceptional work to their collections.” Carson teaches weeklong workshops at the Scottsdale Artist School and in Florence, Italy, and Los Angeles. In April 2024, he will unveil new work at Bonner David Galleries in New York. Learn more at www.bonnerdavid.com or www.mikecarson.art.

What is better: the ultimate in nostalgic food flavors or the most over-the-top tasting menu with all the bells and whistles? Chef Cory Oppold decided the answer was both, resulting in his ambitious Course Restaurant in the heart of central Scottsdale. Course opened earlier this year with sky-high expectations heightened by Oppold’s previous stints at Atlas Bistro, Binkley’s, L ’Auberge de Sedona, and on Food Network, when he won Chopped. During his multicourse, prix fixe menu, Oppold takes guests on a multisensory adventure in texture, plating and garnishment while imparting flavors that feel comforting and familiar, yet fanciful and opulent all at the same time. And because he likes a challenge (or maybe hates sleep?) he converts Course from a fine dining dinner establishment to a whimsical brunch spot each Sunday, calling the concept-within-a-concept Morning Would. www.courserestaurantaz.com.

DUSTIN CRISTOFOLO Many chefs talk about being part of the farm-to-table movement, but Dustin Christofolo, executive chef of Quiessence at the Farm, lives the movement. He sources his herbs, eggs, vegetables, many fruits, and even edible flowers for garnish from the Soil and Seed Garden and ample trees located just steps from the restaurant, and partners with local vendors in the Valley for produce and meat that isn’t able to grow on-site. Given the freshness of the ingredients, Cristofolo is careful not to over complicate his plates with too many drizzles or sauces, instead focusing his talents on making each rustic ingredient shine like a star. He is also masterful with his pacing, letting guests choose a three-, four-, or five-course menu with sinfully sensational add-ons – such as foie gras macarons – over the course of a few beautiful hours under candlelight. www.qatthefarm.com.

BRANDEN LEVINE There are pop stars, and then there are singer-songwriters. And while both boast an otherworldly talent, there is an innate soul in how singer-songwriters perform, likely because they are sharing a piece of themselves with every word. In a world of chefs who are pop stars, Sel Restaurant chef-owner Branden Levine is a singer-songwriter, pouring himself into everything his guests see, taste, touch, and smell while at his family-owned fine dining restaurant each night (as well as during the day as he just announced lunch service!). Levine’s style is refined, but not stuffy, taking inspiration from the best bites he has experienced in his vast travels across the globe as well as from his decades in the kitchen, bringing experience from his time leading Café Monarch in Scottsdale and working at Charlie Palmer’s iconic Aureole in Las Vegas, among others. www.selrestaurant.com.

FAT OX Through Fat Ox, Matt Carter – an icon in Arizona food who also owns and operates The Mission and Zinc Bistro – invites guests to experience a refined interpretation of bold rural Italian flavors kissed with inspiration from his storied culinary career. The chic space, which is located on one of the most prominent intersections in Scottsdale on Lincoln and Scottsdale roads, reflects the sophisticated and visually stunning menu. Midcentury in its design but with nods to Italian fashion, European travel, and celebrities of the 1950s and 1960s, steel, glass, leather, and dim candlelight dominate the interior, while glowing lights illuminate the gleaming patio. Given its contemporary focus, do not expect heavy chicken parmesan or lasagna. Instead, delight in precisely prepared dishes with simple ingredients, handmade pastas, and cheeses that are small enough to allow for the enjoyment of multiple courses together on a special night out. www.ilovefatox.com.

THE RESERVE

There are special occasion spots, and then there are special occasion spots, meaning the short list of eateries that were made for events like proposals, anniversaries and even honeymoons. This sister concept to Café Monarch (itself one of the most romantic restaurants in the Southwest), The Reserve is inspired by the owner’s travels through Europe and boasts a menu so over the top that it is common for caviar, wagyu, white truffles, and bone marrow to be on the tasting menu, each presented tableside like a work of art, meant to elicit a visual and aromatic response long before anything touches the lips. The intimate space, limited to just a few dozen guests per night, is also a feast for the eyes with glowing lights strung from above, crisp white linens, and antique curiosities in every dreamy nook. www.reserveoldtown.com.

THE AMERICANO Imagine a supper club…but make it fashion. That is the best way to describe the feeling when first walking into chef Scott Conant’s buzzy Italian steakhouse because it feels like a throwback to a high-end New York restaurant from a classic movie but also as if it just jumped off the pages of modern-day Vogue. The art is bold, the chandeliers are gold, and the main dining room is lit just enough to see the culinary team – often including Conant himself – preparing the dishes that have defined the celebrity chef’s career as well as dreaming up some new local favorites. Bonus: The inventive signature cocktail menu also never fails to impress. www.theamericanorestaurant.com.

While a fine dining steak and fresh seafood restaurant – not to mention a 2023 Wine Spectator Best of Excellence Award winner – both the food and drink menus also have clear influences of modern European, Mediterranean, and Mexican techniques and ingredients. Every course is enhanced by white-glove service and the striking interior. The earthy tones, stone, and leather accents work together to make the view, and the evening itself, all the more awe-inspiring. www.primessh.com.

ELLIOTT’S STEAKHOUSE

THE HIDDEN HOUSE The buzz swirling around this 800-square-foot bar-restaurant – recently named among Open Table’s 100 best Neighborhood Gems in America for its elevated yet approachable menu and intimate setting – that opened in 2019 is well deserved. Housed in a cozy 1939 cottage, and now with a 2,500-squarefoot hanger extension due to its overwhelming popularity, the downtown Chandler newsmaker is aptly named given it is truly hidden from direct view of the street. The menu is primarily new American in its approach, changing in the fall and spring to fit the seasonality of ingredients, and its most ambitious offerings include multiple foie gras dishes, a Prime rib-eye steak, and the gochujang-glazed pork belly. Given the menu just went through an update, a good rule of thumb is to order anything and everything with black garlic in the description. www.hiddenhouseaz.com.

Since opening the doors of their first concept – the Brickyard Downtown – in 2016, Gavin Jacobs and Chandler icons Jackie and Elliott Hall have been focused on serving the local community by creating delicious destinations for visitors and locals alike, welcoming all through their doors as if already friends. When Elliott passed in 2022 while the team was in the midst of a new restaurant project, the decision was made to dedicate it to his memory. Opened earlier this year, Elliott’s Steakhouse is located in the Rowena Theater building, which dates back to the silent movie era in the 1930s and was Elliott’s favorite spot to see films growing up in the 1940s. Masculine and sleek in its look with a 47-foot bar, the menu boasts a raw bar, dry-aged steaks, and both seafood and shellfish flown in fresh several times a week. www.elliottssteakhouse.com. JASON ALFORD

There is an art and science to cooking Japanese delicacies, especially doing so in an authentic way. Jason Alford all but earned his Ph.D. in Japanese technique and flavor profiles, not to mention fine dining, during his 10-plus years leading the kitchen – and robata grill – at Roka Akor. After departing the hot spot in 2018, Alford took time to travel and expand his family, but is now back behind the wood-fired grill in a big way, screaming onto the scene with Pa’La Downtown in 2021. There, he blends his doctorate in the finer points of Asian fine dining with his love of all things Mediterranean. A true love letter to global cuisine, Alford’s menu is best enjoyed in a group so that a diverse selection of tapas may be enjoyed, followed by a few sharable larger entrees, especially the specials featured on the floor-to-ceiling chalkboards each evening. www.palakitchen.com.

RYAN SWANSON The local culinary landscape was dealt a blow when chef Ryan Swanson – who is best known for elevating Kai Restaurant at the Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass to Arizona’s only Forbes Five Star and AAA Five Diamond fine dining restaurant, and earning a James Beard nomination for “Best Chef in the Southwest” along the way – left Arizona in 2021 for the East Coast. However, after honing his already impressive skills at The Ocean House in Rhode Island over the past few years, Swanson made his triumphant return to The Grand Canyon State earlier this summer, taking on the executive chef role at L’Auberge de Sedona. There, he is primarily focused on re-imagining the resort’s flagship restaurant, Cress on Oak Creek. His vision is to create menus that celebrate his epicurean journey in such a stunning way that they rival the idyllic setting along Oak Creek. www.lauberge.com.

KELLY FLETCHER Now this is a comeback to shout from the rooftops! Kelly Fletcher is a local legend, helping build Arizona’s culinary community one kitchen at a time over the course of his career, leading teams at the likes of House of Tricks, Zen Culinary, El Chorro, Tuck Shop, and Genuine Concepts. He is also one of seven chefs – along with Cullen Campbell, Joshua Hebert, Scott Holmes, Stephen Jones, Bernie Kantak, and Gio Osso – who helped put Arizona on the food map by collectively cooking at the James Beard House in 2015. In recent years, however, Fletcher was taken out of the kitchen due to grave illness. After fighting his way back, Flecther announced his triumphant return earlier this year, becoming the executive chef of Virtù Honest Craft, crafting an ever-changing menu of modern Mediterranean fare. www.virtuhonestcraft.com.

OCEAN 44 Hello, gorgeous! Even before walking into Ocean 44, the restaurant makes a statement with its exterior, which boasts glowing quartzite tiles installed at angles to appear as fish scales glistening in the water. Inside, the hot spot is always abuzz in every direction. On any given night, there is a professional athlete entertaining friends at one table, C-suite executives enjoying happy hour at the bar, and couples that look fresh from the runway snuggling at a cozy nook in the more dimly lit section of the restaurant. While seemingly different parties, everyone is there for the same thing: to indulge in the unapologetic opulence both to the eye and to the taste. The menu matches the aesthetic thanks to a menu of seafood and shellfish flown in daily and impeccably marbled steaks wet-aged 28 days before being cut in-house by a master butcher. www.ocean44.com.

ARBOLEDA When entering Arboleda expect to be overwhelmed, but in the best possible ways. First, there is visual appeal, offering eye candy in every direction. The 6,500-square-foot restaurant is a love letter to the coastal eateries that border the Mediterranean. Spanish for “grove,” Arboleda has a majestic living tree in its main dining room, helping give scale to the towering, curved cement walls and ceiling. The natural palate extends to the bar top and flooring, but there are some pops of color, primarily muted red, blue, and green hues in rugs, furniture, and stunning wine cabinets that double as art pieces. Not a night goes by without a crowd gathering along the ample bar and pouring out across the spacious patio, enjoying small bites that celebrate flavors from Spain, Italy, Greece, and Morocco while drinking, laughing, and setting Scottsdale Quarter ablaze in activity. www.arboledaaz.com.

FLINT BY BALTAIRE Housed inside a stunning, two-story space with views of Camelback Mountain, the 9,500-square-foot Flint by Baltaire tempts with its midcentury modern decor, natural wood accents, vintage European furnishings and a gleaming exhibition kitchen tucked behind a glass wall. The menu focuses on American fare accented with coastal Mediterranean and bold Middle Eastern flavors. Many items on the menu – which was conceived, and developed by chef-partner Travis Strickland, who has been lauded for his concepts by the likes of the USA Today and Huffington Post – are made using an imported Italian wood-fire hearth oven and Santa Maria-style grill. Beyond that, there is an alfresco hideaway on the second floor called Upstairs by Baltaire where diners can enjoy small bites and drinks while taking in the view of Arizona’s epic sunsets. www.flintbybaltaire.com.

FATE BREWING COMPANY This ever-growing brewery started small, with Fate’s Tap + Barrel in North Scottsdale in 2012. What began as a seven-barrel brewhouse has since expanded to a 15-barrel brewhouse with three locations – Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe – to keep up with fan demand. Each location has at least a dozen options to taste, including the flagship Fateful IPA, which is bold yet balanced with bright notes of honey-soaked citrus and pine needles. If visiting during the winter months, do not miss the limited-edition Candy Bar Milk Stout, a silver medalist at the Great American Beer Festival; or the Hatch Chile Gatos, a gold medalist at the World Beer Cup. Available in very limited quantities, the Milk Stout is brewed with honey-roasted peanuts, cacao nibs, vanilla bean, and a touch of sea salt, while the Gatos is a golden ale aged with freshly roasted chiles. www.fatebrewing.com.

HUSS BREWING CO. Ten years ago, in 2013, Huss Brewing Co. was founded by husband-and-wife team Jeff and Leah Huss, but their story and impact on the local beer scene goes back far longer than that. Jeff – who attended the Siebel Institute in Chicago and Doemens Academy in Germany to hone his craft – was already a head brewer, helming the BJ’s Brewhouse in Chandler. Leah was already a true pioneer in the Arizona craft beer movement as she founded Papago Brewing the 1990s. Combining their powers, in the years since partnering, the couple has grown Huss to three locations around the Valley, including its flagship taproom in Uptown Phoenix, an outpost in Tempe, and a taproom in Downtown Phoenix. Additionally, there is likely not a grocery or liquor store within 100 miles of the Valley that does not carry the brand’s Scottsdale Blonde German-style Kölsch. www.hussbrewing.com.

KITSUNE BREWING COMPANY A relatively new kid on the beer block, Kitsune Brewing Company is the brainchild of Tyler Smith, a Scottsdale native who first began brewing in college in the early 2000s. Upon graduation, life would take Smith in another direction – a job with Nike that required regular travel to Asia – but he always kept brewing. In 2020 he made the move to crafting beer fulltime just as the pandemic hit. Thankfully, he was able to contract with Simple Machine Brewing to get his recipes started despite not having a full-time space. When his first beer, a hazy IPA, hit the market in September 2020, it sold out in weeks. By 2022, Kitsune opened as a full-scale brewery, today offering 10 to 12 craft beers, including sours, IPAs, a blonde ale, a red ale, and an imperial stout, at any given time. www.kitsunebrewingco.com.

CHULA SEAFOOD If a restaurant in town is boasting a locally sourced seafood item, chances are it is sourced from Chula. The family-owned business got its start in San Diego in 2009 by the Heflin family and is named for their commercial boat – Chula – that specializes in the sustainable fishing of native species of the California Coast. While for several years the family focused on distribution locally in California, in 2015, they developed a process to take their fresh catches from the boat to the desert, where they grew up, opening a local fish market. One location grew to two, and two to three. Today, each market offers an ever-changing selection of fresh fish and seafood as well as smoked fish and daily features available to enjoy on-site or to go from the kitchen, including barbecue trout sandwiches, lobster tortellini, tuna patty melts, and more. www.chulaseafood.com.

BUCK & RIDER

MODERN OYSTERBAR CHOPHOUSE A true family affair, Modern Oysterbar Chophouse is the brainchild of couple and hospitality veterans Cat and Randy Frankel. Their son Dylan oversees the beverage program, while their daughter-in-law Sam serves as the executive pastry chef. Given the name, it's no surprise that the oyster bar itself is prominently on the menu, offering chilled market oysters on the half shell over ice from all over the country as well as shrimp specialties over ice, and both gargantuan chilled seafood platters with oysters, shrimp, and lobster tail. There’s also hot seafood platters with fried oysters, scallops, lobster tail and shrimp. And that does not even scratch the surface. There is a full section of the menu devoted to shellfish and seafood, nightly specialties, and starters ranging from Dungeness and blue crab cakes to oysters Rockefeller. Even the majority of the salads are topped with seafood. www.modernoysterbarchophouse.com.

While Buck & Rider has been a seafood staple in Arcadia since 2015, the modern eatery – designed to resemble a cozy yet airy beach house in Australia and inspired by a fisherman’s term for intertwined or mating crabs – only made its debut in North Scottsdale in the past year. Upon opening last winter, the Scottsdale location made an immediate splash thanks to the seafood- and shellfish-focused menu, each of which are sourced directly from small producers around the world who engage in sustainable fishing and oyster farming practices. The team timestamps the menu throughout the day to alert guests to the freshest catches, which are flown in daily. There is both a raw bar and a standard menu, with the raw bar offering seafood platters, half a dozen oyster options, shellfish and even caviar. The expansive standard menu boasts shareables, sushi, additional seafood entrees, and also steak. www.buckandrider.com. So Scottsdale! December ‘23

CENTURY GRAND Century Grand recently did what no other Arizona concept has done before, winning the 2023 Tale of the Cocktail Spirited Award for Best U.S. Cocktail Bar, which is the industry’s highest honor. The team was up against 49 fellow concepts nationwide, making the victory even sweeter. Housed in an unassuming freestanding building in Arcadia, Century Grand is technically three immersive bar experiences in one. First, there is Platform 18, which is held in a replica turn of the century Pullman train car. Through its drink menu and visual effects, Platform 18 takes guests on a journey through the Louisiana Bayou. Next is Grey Hen, which looks like a 1920s apothecary and “prescribes” hand-selected spirits along with its own mixology magic. Finally, there is UnderTow, which is designed to feel as if one is sailing on a 19th century clipper ship and excels in exotic cocktails. www.centurygrandphx.com.

FIRST & LAST/LITTLE DEBBIE’S Dungeness crab arancini with tomato emulsion? Yes, please! A tomahawk Iberico pork chop with creamed mustard greens? Okay! Poached pear creme fraiche panna cotta with pine nut brittle? Have mercy! Opened in 2022 on Roosevelt Row, First & Last boasts a bohemian vibe throughout its design and was founded by couple Robb and Ashley Hammond, hospitality veterans on a mission to make their Downtown Phoenix community a bigger dining destination. The menu, which changes regularly, is inspired by the best regional ingredients available each season, and the drink program is focused on showcasing small-production wines as well as cheeky cocktails. Located in the basement of the eatery is Little Debbie’s. Named as an homage to Ashley’s extroverted mother, it offers Italianinspired cocktails as well as snacks and desserts. www.firstandlastphx.com.

WREN AND WOLF/TROPHY ROOM Named because it has something for early birds and palates by the pack alike, Wren & Wolf is equal parts coffee shop, casual afternoon eatery, fine dining destination and modern nightclub complete with DJs spinning tracks several nights a week. The dinner menu is outside of the box in concept, with bread service that includes enhancements from bone marrow to chicharrons (fried pork belly) and small plates of Peruvian ceviche, New Zealand Hiromasa crudo and a bump of caviar paired with mezcal or sparkling wine. The cocktail menu is similarly exceptionally eccentric-yet-excellent with clever flavor combinations throughout. Within the restaurant, there is also the Trophy Room. Opened earlier this year, the secret cocktail lounge neither allows photography nor phones to keep the experience a surprise for all those who enter. www.wrenandwolf.com.

LOVECRAFT New Mexico native Rebecca Golden – locally beloved as the founder and original owner of 32 Shea – is proud of her roots, especially her culture’s rich diversity of flavors. As a result, when developing the concept and menu for Lovecraft – named to honor all those who craft, from brewers and mead-makers to farmers and builders, and designed to make all those who enter feel like a friend when they walk in the door – she wanted to showcase New Mexico’s fusion of Pueblo Native American cuisine with Hispano Spanish and Mexican cuisines in a big way. Delivering on all levels, Golden’s menu is a celebration of red and green chiles as well as authentic Southwestern corn, beans and bold meats. Truly wanting all who enter to be comfortable, Lovecraft sets itself apart by offering an expertly designed plant-based menu for vegetarians and vegans to enjoy. www.lovecraftphx.com.

VECINA Spanish for “neighbor,” Vecina has made itself a valuable neighbor in the Arcadia community since opening in 2019. The menu is led by executive chef James Fox, a veteran of Zinc Bistro, Southern Rail, Buck & Rider, and The Mission, who is also a past winner of Cooking Channel’s Taco Wars and the Arizona Taco Festival People’s Choice award. His aim is to create modern American dishes dotted with Latin flair – think Peruvian ceviche; pork confit empanadas; and tlayuda, a handmade dish in traditional Oaxacan cuisine using a fried tortilla as its base that is much thicker than a tostada. Both spice and Asian flavors have a place at Vecina as well, intermingled with the Latin flavors, as evidenced by the popular karaage with aji Amarillo and the Faroe Island salmon tacos with mouthwatering yuzu kosho aioli. www.vecinaphx.com.

PHOTO BY CHILTE AND EGYPTIAN MOTOR HOTEL

CHILTE From its humble beginnings as a food truck to its full-scale restaurant space now open at the Egyptian Motor Hotel in Phoenix, Chilte has operated under the mantra of “me vale” since day one in its approach to disrupting the concept of traditional dining or Latin American fare. Translated to English, it means “I don’t care,” and there is even a neon sign emblazoned in its dining room to make the sentiment clear. Now, chef Lawrence "L.T." Smith and his partner Aseret Arroyo care deeply for their customers and the food empire they are diligently building. What don’t they care about? Doing things the same old way things have always been done in restaurants, as well as the same old way ingredients were sourced – in bulk – for decades. At Chilte, expect local chili peppers in everything, and a global feel to what might be considered Mexican staples. www.chiltephx.com.

Does a Mediterraneanstyle diet reduce cancer risk?

T

here’s no such thing as an anticancer diet. But that doesn’t stop people from searching for one on the internet. Those looking to lower their cancer risk and cancer survivors or patients hoping to prevent a cancer recurrence or improve their treatment outcomes are hungry for reliable information about the best diet. “During a time when patients feel they have little control over their bodies, they do have control over what they put into their mouths, and are often willing to make healthy changes,” says Kara Sonntag, RD, Clinical Dietitian at City of Hope®. “Some people are more comfortable making small changes over several months, and others want to rip off the band-aid. What’s important is finding an approach you’re able to stick with.” Research shows the nutrients in the popular Mediterranean diet may help lower cancer risk, boost treatment effectiveness for patients and even prevent a recurrence. The Mediterranean diet is recognized as the best diet overall by U.S. News and World Report and is considered one of the easiest to follow over the long term. Dietitians and nutritionists often recommend a Mediterranean-style diet, which aligns with American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) guidelines, to cancer patients as part of an overall healthy lifestyle. Research supports this recommendation. While researchers can’t say conclusively that the Mediterranean diet is an anti-cancer diet, AICR states there’s evidence that it reduces the risk of weight gain and obesity. That’s important because 40 percent of all cancers in the U.S. are linked with obesity.

“The most important diet approach helps people achieve and maintain a healthy body weight given that obesity increases the risk of 13 different types of cancers,” says Carolyn Lammersfeld, MS, MBA, VP Clinical Services and Integrative Oncology at City of Hope. “Plant-based foods may also have direct effects on protecting the DNA in our cells from damage that can lead to the development of cancer.”

What’s the Mediterranean diet?

The Mediterranean diet was inspired by the eating habits of people living near the Mediterranean Sea, especially residents of Greece and Italy. Since not everyone eats the same foods in these regions, it’s considered more of a style of eating than a diet plan. It’s also evolved over the last few decades, but the basic guidelines remain the same. Today’s Mediterranean diet emphasizes: • Meals that consist of three main food groups: vegetables, fruits and whole grains. One or two servings of fruit and two or more servings of vegetables per meal is the norm, with at least one serving of each served raw. • Eating fish at least twice weekly and other proteins, including poultry, eggs and dairy (cheese or yogurt) in small portions either daily or a few times a week. • Limiting red meat consumption to a few times a month. • Using healthy fats and oils for cooking and as part of meals. Olive oil is recommended for cooking and marinating. Foods

naturally containing healthy fats, such as avocados, nuts and salmon, are also part of Mediterranean-style menus. • Preparing dishes with a variety of spices and herbs that are good sources of micronutrients. Depending on the region, spices may include basil, chive, cumin, fennel, garlic, oregano, parsley, rosemary, tarragon, thyme and sage as well as spice blends like za’atar. • Snacking on olives, nuts and seeds since these are good sources of healthy lipids, proteins, vitamins, minerals and fiber. • Drinking water as the main beverage (six to eight glasses a day) but allowing a moderate consumption of wine with meals. Moderate drinking consists of no more than two servings (the equivalent of a beer, glass of wine or single-shot cocktail) per day for men, and one serving per day for women. It’s important to note that the Mediterranean diet stands apart from other plant-based diets in that it also incorporates lifestyle practices including adequate sleep. physical exercise and social interaction (often through preparing and eating meals with friends and family members). Though more research, eating the Mediterranean way has shown to have a positive role on overall health and longevity. For more information visit cancercenter.com. 2024 CADILLAC ESCALADE-V The brand’s first V-series sport utility vehicle BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS 2024 Cadillac Escalade-V ESV

Not unlike European high-performance marques including the AMG moniker from Mercedes and BMW’s M division, Cadillac threw its horsepower into the competition with its own performance-focused skunkworks within the brand by creating the V-Series two decades ago. Over that time, Cadillac has launched some incredibly potent V-Series, even setting a Nurburgring lap record with its CTS-V sedan along with the feared and revered CT5-V Blackwing. Until now, the brand hasn’t offered a V-Series SUV, especially on the most recognizable Cadillac name in the portfolio: the Escalade. Available in both the standard and ESV extralong wheelbase configurations, these absolute behemoth of vehicles hard punch out a walloping 682 horsepower with 653 pound-feet of torque from a Roots-type supercharged handbuilt 6.2-liter V-8 engine delivered courtesy of a 10-speed automatic transmission through the standard all-wheel drive. Outside, the V adorns a blacked-out grille, a new front bumper with chunky quad-exit exhausts out back and a purposeful diffuser. Even with its V-specific 22-inch wheels, red-finished Brembo

102 So Scottsdale! December ‘23

brake calipers and modest telltale signature “V” badging on the front doors and cargo hatch, it fails to look apart from lesser Escalade models. Inside, as expected, it showcases luxury features and eminently comfortable accoutrements, such as the exclusive semi-aniline leather hides. It also has a thoughtful layout, including the curved OLED display screens for the digital-gauge cluster and infotainment system. Pressing the ignition button immediately reveals where Cadillac spent the most time and money when crafting. Those expecting a firm, race-track carving ride and handling will soon discover it gives nothing away relative to a supple driving experience. If there is a downside, it’s the all-season tires as the V literally begs for sticky summer performance tires. The V ESV unoficianlly tested here impressively catapulted from zero to 60 mph in just a tick over 4 seconds. The top speed is an unimpressive 125 mph, exposing a somewhat inconvenient and unremarkable truth: Even with its massive horsepower and torque, and intimidating yet delicious exhaust notes, the V ESV’s primary focus is less on performance and more on luxury.

The stylish, adults-only sanctuary is located in the heart of Baja California Sur with just 79 suites to guarantee pampering and utmost privacy. The ceremony’s grand finale is time in the coed magnesium pool, which has been shown to naturally relax muscles, improve skin elasticity and hair health and lower blood pressure. After the water journey, guests may indulge in a host of treatments inspired by the ocean and natural desert surroundings, many of which are combined with sound therapy using ocean waves as their inspiration. A TASTE OF TEMECULA Southern California’s largest wine country is a hidden culinary gem

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Diverse, dynamic and oh-so-delicious, Temecula Valley is an epicure epicenter on the rise. Just a five-hour drive from Scottsdale, or an hour-drive from San Diego, Temecula is Southern California’s largest wine-producing region by volume and was recently named among the Top 10 Wine Destinations in the World by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. The region has exploded in growth over the past decade, today boasting nearly 50 unique wineries and vineyards as well as several dozen award-winning eateries.

Epic Accommodations The overnight accommodations include a blend of boutique options as well as large-scale resorts, and even wine country estates. Of note are Europa Village, South Coast Winery Resort & Spa, and Wilson Creek Manor. Europa Village sprawls across 40 acres and has multiple Old World-inspired winery experiences, as well as boutique lodging options in Bolero and The Inn at Europa Village. Bolero features 10 intimate Spanish bungalows nestled between olive trees and fountains, each with vaulted ceilings and a private courtyard and just steps from Bolero Restaurant, which specializes in tapas. The Inn at Europa Village is a small Parisian bed and breakfast overlooking the property’s vineyards and the C’est La Vie French tasting room. South Coast Winery is located just down the street. The only state winery to claim the title of California Winery of the Year five times at the California State Fair Wine Competition, South Coast is situated on 63 lush acres and features a grand resort with 132 rooms and magnificent villas, the full-service Grapeseed Spa, and the lauded Vineyard Rose Restaurant in addition to its full-scale winery operations. Finally, Wilson Creek Manor comes from the iconic family winery of the same name that helped put Temecula on the map with its world-renowned almond Champagne. In addition to multiple vineyard experiences, including wine glass engraving, Wilson Creek boasts a 12,000-square-foot manor in the heart of its vineyard. It features 10 well-appointed bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, a game room, a private outdoor pool and spa, a barbeque, a gazebo, a basketball court, and a commercial-grade kitchen. It also comes with Wilson Creek wine stocked in the bar and exclusive access to both the acclaimed winery and its eatery.

Tour the Town There are nearly endless options for oenophiles in Temecula. The best bet is to lock in a tour for at least one day of any visit. With both preplanned itineraries that include vineyard picnics and custom tours, The Grapeline is a great option, especially since

108 So Scottsdale! December ‘23

debuting the world’s first Mercedes hardtop Sprinter convertible shuttle. The 18-person luxury tour vehicle allows all guests to enjoy fresh air and 180-degree views of Temecula between vineyard visits. Whether on a tour or independently exploring, consider a visit to Robert Renzoni Vineyards, Fazeli Cellars, Wiens Family Cellars, Carter Estate Winery & Resort, Callaway Winery, Leoness Cellars, Doffo Winery, or Lorenzi Estate as each offer something above and beyond a quick tasting flight. At Renzoni, indulge in premium California wines made using Italian grape varieties as well as Mama Rosa’s Trattoria, which features elevated Italian classics and some of the best brick oven pizza in the region. Fazeli Cellars is special for both its wine and its celebration of Persian culture, even down to the opulent, largerthan-life architecture. The family-run hot spot, Weins, boasts big reds and has some small bite pairing options as well as a sister concept, Wiens Brewing, nearby, which serves a selection of hand-crafted beers to taste or take to go. Carter Estate is a perfect option for those seeking romance. The combination resort-restaurant-vineyard offers one wine tasting package that is capped with a hot air balloon ride and another that is paired with a two-hour private horse-drawn carriage ride through its estate vineyards. For a view that will take everyone’s breath away, make a reservation at Callaway Winery. An innovator in the area, it was founded by Ely Callaway – of Callaway Golf fame – and is now privately owned by a local family. The breathtaking estate and tasting room is built high above the city and boasts award-winning chardonnay, pinot gris, and sauvignon blanc varietals. Callaway is also home to Meritage Restaurant, an indoor-outdoor eatery with a farm-to-fork mindset. The ingredients on the ever-changing menu come from the Callaway greenhouse and garden or are otherwise sourced from sustainable local farmers. While not a full-scale restaurant and tasting room, Maurice Car’rie is known for its line of sparkling wines infused with pineapple, peach-mango, pomegranate, and raspberry. The brie bread, a giant, freshly baked sourdough bread bowl with garlic and melty brie cheese in the center, is also a must-order item. Among the most immersive experiences in the area is Leonesse Cellars. There, opt for the Vineyard Tour & Taste, a guided adventure through the award-winning brand’s winemaking process capped by a luxurious private tasting of its wines with artisan cheeses and other surprises. Doffo is another perfect option for those who want a behindthe-scenes tour. Its most popular option – Cork ‘N Torque – takes guests in an open-air vehicle for an outdoor vine-filled adventure before touring the brand’s vintage motorcycle collection and culminating with a deluxe wine tasting. Seeking something to do between bites and sips? Temecula also offers gaming and live events at Pechanga Casino, ghost tours via The Haunt Temecula, golf at several public courses, animal encounters at Alpaca Hacienda, and even a combination petting zoo and chocolate shop at Sugarplum Zoo. Thompson 105 serves up homemade Italian cuisine alongside sweeping views of the McDowell Mountains. Among its most popular offerings for the holiday season is the Turner Mussels Fra Diavolo ($17), due to its festive pops of color and for its spicy heat in every bite. Sourced from New Zealand, the green-lipped mussels are prized for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nutrients as well as their saltyyet-sweet flavor profile. The dish is made with sauteed olive oil, garlic, shallots, leeks, and ample chili peppers that have been deglazed with Chablis. Once the alcohol burns off, rich housemade marinara sauce and liquid from the mussels are added, followed by the mussels, butter, thyme, oregano, salt, and pepper. The Keeler family celebrates its late patriarch with new signature cocktail, Poppy’s Cigar

In 2021, the world lost Paul Keeler, a culinary giant and beloved local philanthropy leader. After nearly 30 years working in the hospitality field, Keeler founded Keeler Hospitality Group in 2008. With his family, the patriarch operated both Liberty Station American Tavern and Smokehouse restaurants in Scottsdale as well as Keeler’s Neighborhood Steakhouse in Carefree. To honor Keeler’s memory, his family opened Poppy’s Office next door to Liberty Station Terravita in October, a speak-easy that looks like Keeler’s private office, complete with personal mementos, family portraits, and memorabilia of Keeler’s favorite teams. “Paul’s grandkids called him ‘Poppy’ and the name stuck, with most of the hospitality community using the nickname,” says Adam Downey, beverage director of Keeler Hospitality Group. “In addition to all of the memories, the speak-easy also features some of our favorite quotes from him, which we call ‘Poppyisms.’” While every cocktail on the menu has some connection to Keeler, Poppy’s Cigar ($20) has a special place in the team’s heart. “It starts with two of Poppy’s favorite spirits in Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie, a scotch made from 100% Scottish barley and matured in premium American oak; and The Deacon Whisky, a blend of both smoky Speyside and peaty Islay malt whiskies,” Downey says. The expressive scotch whiskies are paired in a rocks glass with apple, chocolate, and Peychaud bitters as well as local honey. “We smoke the cocktail tableside and finish it with a Luxardo cherry. It is served on a wooden block with a cigar cutter and a custom-made wooden replica of Poppy’s favorite cigar that gets lit and smells of wood and incense,” Downey says. Poppy’s Office, 34522 N. In the kitchen with Gregory James of Sanctuary Camelback Mountain, A Gurney’s Resort & Spa

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

Gregory James is the newly announced executive chef of Sanctuary Camelback Mountain, A Gurney’s Resort & Spa, where he is in the midst of re-imaging the menu at elements while overseeing all other culinary operations on property.

Congratulations on the new role! How did it come together? In 2012, I met chef Beau MacMillan while volunteering at a charity event called Beer for Brains. We developed a friendship and have always supported each other. He called me earlier this year and encouraged me to come back to Arizona for the role, and the rest is history. Your prior position has made national news in recent years. Can you tell us about it? I was executive chef at The Inn at Perry Cabin in Maryland. We created a sea-to-table and farm-to-table culinary focus at the property, which readers might recognize as the primary wedding reception in Wedding Crashers, that earned us a Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Award as well as honors from Travel + Leisure, Conde Nast Traveler, and others. Tell us about your first time working in Arizona. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America at Hyde Park in 1998, I worked in kitchens across the U.S., including under Marcus Samuelson at Aquavit in New York City and Minneapolis, before moving to Phoenix in 2006 to cook at the Marriott Camelback Inn, Boulders Resort & Spa, and Marriott Phoenix Resort Tempe at The Buttes. After leaving Phoenix in 2016, I ate my way across Europe, Asia, and the U.S. and also worked in Charleston and Napa before The Inn. What can guests expect from your menus? While the biggest changes will debut in 2024, guests can expect some hallmark Asian flavors to remain. However, they will be complemented by global flavors from all of my travels as well as new textures, intricate plating, and as much sourced locally as possible, including from Copper State Ranch, Two Wash Farms, Arizona Microgreens, and more. UNDERGROUND EMPRESS Local dishes featuring decadent truffles BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Lobster & Black Truffle Tagliatelle

The Henry Here, truffle is used to take parmesan cream sauce – already dreamy thanks to the use of onion, garlic, butter, white wine, parmesan, ricotta, and cream – to a whole other level. Before it comes to the table, the dish is topped with shaved black truffles, too. $49. www.thehenryrestaurant.com.

Garganelli

Is there a more indulgent ingredient than the truffle? They are prized for their umami fragrance and flavor, and only coveted due to their difficulty to source because they grow underground attached to the roots of trees. Here are some local restaurants that scored some sacred truffles and used them to create transformative seasonal dishes.

Next, truffle-infused manchego cheese and white truffle oil are added. It is folded, cooked until melty, and then topped with shaved black truffles. $34. www.tocamadera.com.

White Alba Truffle Gnocchi Mushroom Pasta

Francine Restaurant Using local Sonoran Pasta Co. noodles as a base, Francine’s Mediterranean take on mushroom pasta starts with sauteed shallots and garlic. Black truffle duxelles, a French term for a mince of mushrooms (in this case, truffles), onions, herbs, and black pepper that are sauteed in butter and reduced to a paste, as well as maitake, hon shimeji, and king trumpet mushrooms are added next. The pasta is finished with parsley oil and lemon juice. It is topped with shaved Parmigiano-Reggiano, parsley, and the option of Perigord truffles shaved tableside. $31. www.francinerestaurant.com.

Café Monarch This exquisite dish begins with soft, cloud-like potato gnocchi. The star of the show, the White Alba truffle, is the undisputed highlight, infusing the entire dish with its enchanting, garlicky aroma, and robust earthiness. Sunchoke adds a dimension of nutty sweetness and a crunch, creating a harmonious balance with the truffle’s complexity. Served as part of the chef’s tasting menu, starting at $140. www.cafemonarch.com.

Truffle Cheese Bread

Doughbird A true labor of love, the bread’s panna cream sauce is first made with reduced heavy cream that has been seasoned with kosher salt and truffles. End NEW IN TOWN

A DELICIOUS DEBUT

The Global Ambassador luxury hotel and dining destination opens this month

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

In 1998, Arizona native Sam Fox opened his first restaurant, Wildflower, in his hometown of Tucson. Over the past 25 years, Fox – a 12-time James Beard award nominee – has been the mastermind behind culinary concepts ranging from True Food Kitchen, Olive + Ivy, and Flower Child to The Henry, Culinary Dropout and Zinburger. And it turns out he was just getting started. For the past decade, Fox has been dedicated to developing his biggest palate-pleasing project to date in The Global Ambassador, which will open to the public in phases starting Dec 6. A modern hotel in the heart of Arcadia with epicurean adventures in every direction, it seeks to provide unrivaled luxury and service, cementing Arizona as a preeminent destination for hospitality worldwide. Fox partnered with Judith Testani from Testani Design Troupe – a long-time collaborator on Fox’s restaurant aesthetics as well as his own Valley home – to create the distinctive look and feel of the hotel, inspired by his own memories from a lifetime of travel around the world. There are 141 rooms, each with oak hardwood floors, fabric wallcoverings, leather accents,

custom walnut millwork, and balconies that overlook Camelback Mountain. Arizonabased artist Michael Carson, another longtime Fox collaborator, crafted art pieces for each room, and there is an impressive selection of coffee table books throughout the property curated by Kelly Croteau of Maison Plage as well. The rooms, public spaces, wellness center and spa, of course, impress on their own, but when combined with the five diverse dining concepts on property, The Global Ambassador is elevated to another level. Given the hotel’s name is The Global Ambassador, each of the eateries is influenced by one or more regions around the world. The centerpiece of the hotel is Le Âme. French for “the soul” and very much the soul of the hotel itself, Le Âme is a Parisian steakhouse with both timeless takes on high-end French fare and a selection of modern twists on the classics. Le Market, just off the steakhouse, is a delightful take on a Parisian patisserie with an espresso bar as well as aromatic sweet and savory treats. It also boasts cheeseboards that perfectly pair with wine. Also in the main space is The Lobby Bar, which offers live music, small bites (think caviar and potato chips), and cocktails inspired by hot spots stateside and around the world. Outside, things move from Europe to Latin America at Pink Dolphin, a Mexican and Peruvian fusion restaurant with agave cocktails and an array of margaritas. And on the roof, there is théa Mediterranean Rooftop, a visually spectacular dining experience with some of the best views in the Valley. A love letter to the best dishes across Italy, Spain, Morocco, France, and more, expect shareable plates, an epic collection of rosés, and yet another menu of masterful mixology. The Global Ambassador, 4360 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; 480.800.2211; www.globalambassadorhotel.com.
