label functions by extension. Our success with a particular sound was inhibiting that, though. I’ve definitely made a focused effort over the last decade or so to re-establish the label as a home for any kind of sound. We definitely do whatever we want.
We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? Yeah, no, that’s fine. I have no problem telling you that toe’s For Long Tomorrow is one of the best albums that has ever been created by any musical group in the history of recorded music.
What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?
I don’t think I have a good answer for this. I enjoy the curational and dot-connecting aspects of marketing only, really. To that end, I love making samplers. And every Topshelf release gets an Obi—all our tapes, all our CDs, all our vinyl—that highlights similar releases within our catalog and gives a free download of our sampler. If you order a tape from our shop, you get a free tape sampler. If you order a CD, you get a CD sampler. I’m working on a free vinyl sampler for all vinyl orders too.
What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released?
When and where did the label begin?
Topshelf began in western Massachusetts where Seth (who co-founded it with me) and I grew up. We started it in earnest the summer of 2005 and officially incorporated it in 2006. We had no idea what we were (are) doing.
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
I think people place a lot of importance in a name—especially at the inception of a project or idea. It doesn’t feel real until you name it but you want the name to be clever and perfectly suited—instantly communicative of your aesthetic and ideals, etc., etc.
It’s a lot of undue pressure for a thing that ostensibly doesn’t exist yet! So yeah, we just kinda named it this, as a placeholder. I never expected it to stick and I thought we’d come up with something different. But then we had a few releases under our belts and it became clear this is what we’re calling it. So it’s Topshelf Records. One word. It means whatever it’s come to mean after 18 years of doing it, I guess.
How has the label changed since it started?
When we started, we didn’t know what we were doing but we really really wanted to be doing it. So in that way I think a lot is the same, LOL. Early on, I think we looked at and tried to emulate what we saw other more established labels doing. Over time … we’ve gotten a lot better at doing the things that we specifically want to do—what we release, how we approach marketing, curation, community, etc.—rather than just doing what seems like everyone else is doing.
Probably the biggest change though, is just the sheer scale of things and how that informs processes. When this was a bunch of boxes in our dorm rooms and parents’ garages, we didn’t think too much about the numbers—if we loved it and wanted to support it, we did. It gets more complicated when you have employees, payroll, rent, a distribution partner, etc.
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?
I think Topshelf is pretty IRL-agnostic. We work with and cater to a global roster and audience, respectively. We started in the Boston area, moved to San Diego, and are now based in Portland, OR so there’s been a lot of upheaval in terms of laying down roots to a physical location over the years. I hope to start to anchor what we’re doing to here in Portland more, but at this point I don’t think there’s anywhere in particular the label feels tied to, for better and/or worse.
Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about?
It’s word of mouth, honestly. As much as I love digitally crate digging through Bandcamp tags and combing through forums and Discords, our own roster has turned us on to a lot over the years. Lately I’ve been really into Portland’s own Kaho Matsui. Wild breakbeat synthy emo stuff, if that even makes sense.
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
I think many people “familiar” with the label would give many different answers to this question. Early on, we definitely became known for releasing music associated with emo, hardcore, screamo type stuff—and the label experienced a huge surge of attention to releases in this vein in the mid-aughts through the “emo revival” in the 2010s. Experiencing that success made me aware that I didn’t want it to be all we were known for, though.
Getting a lot of press attention forces your own perceptions to reconcile with external perceptions. I realized around this time success was painting us into a corner. I personally love all kinds of music and have wanted to be genre-agnostic in how the
I personally just buy whatever’s in front of me when I’m in a shop. The hand-poured stuff that Gotta Groove does is the coolest shit I have straight up ever seen by far though.
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
There’s an eclectic crowd, and aside from me and maybe a handful of other pure freaks, I don’t feel like there’s anyone who truly enjoys all of the label’s output. I feel like increasingly there isn’t a Topshelf archetype and I think that’s pretty cool.
Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own?
I feel like most people who start labels can answer this affirmatively, right? I play drums on the label’s first release.
In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days?
I strongly feel that governments should be enacting policies and in general doing more to incentivize and sunset processes that contribute negatively to climate, the environment, etc. I also feel that corporate lobbying has successfully pinned the onus of responsibility on the individual rather than on corporations, which is dumb as hell. We live in a society (LOL) and work in an industry wherein art is perpetually devalued. This puts sustainable livable wages directly at odds with environmental sustainability. I don’t have the answers, but I think re-evaluating what and how we manufacture and consume is a good starting point. It costs more, but our most recent vinyl titles are all manufactured with a carbon-neutral manufacturer in Europe, using granulate based on calcium zinc stabilizers instead of highly toxic heavy metal stabilizers. It’s something!
How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?
A great deal, yeah. We donate to various collectives and organizations like Equitable Giving Circle here in Portland. Similar to the previous question, I think individual responsibility for societal and structural problems is of course helpful and necessary, but much more is needed in the form of policy from elected officials. A record label offers an opportunity to broadcast a set of principles we wish to see enacted—to signal boost not just our roster and what they’re doing, but also the ideals we collectively espouse.
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
I used to RUN THIS SHIT off Myspace LOL. You could basically run a whole-ass label from Myspace alone. But the real answer here is actually the rise and consolidation of gated platform economies. As far as where the internet has taken media and “content” (and yes, this includes music), we’re in one of the dumbest possible timelines. And I’m sorry to say, we’re all blindly walking farther away from where we need to be. We don’t have enough space on this page for this question and where I want to take it, LOL. It wasn’t even that good when Topshelf started, I’m not nostalgia tripping right now, LOL. Co-optive bullshit has always prevailed in this industry. Oops I’m being hella negative in the trade publication!!!
Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment?
Now’s your chance:
I love Musique Plastique in the absolutely failing liminal space of a bygone era of American commerce that is the Lloyd Center Mall here in Portland, OR. They have a great selection of jazz, electronic, ambient, and house music, everyone who works there is a chiller, and I’m pretty sure their shop is in an old Spencer’s Gifts or PacSun.
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?
Please kindly forget us.

On 'Love Hallucination' Jessy Lanza is in control as a songwriter and producer, flexing her skills in the studio and rebuilding her sound, taking chances with production and energy in all directions, from club -ready, to downbeat and sultry, with the theme of trusting yourself in the moment and using intuition as a compass driving the record forward.
‘Love Hallucination’ is the so und of an artist in bloom, an album of big emotions and big songs, with direct, personal lyrics, such as the upbeat but panicked opener 'Don't Leave Me Now' and the 2 -step drama of 'Midnight Ontario', or 'Limbo', an ear worm disco stomper about produced with Marco 'Tensnake' Niermeski.
Also featured as co-producers are David Kennedy (Pearson Sound), adding slick arrangements for the club, long-time collaborator Jeremy Greenspan (Junior Boys), and Paul White.
‘Love Hallucination’ is a bold and immediate record from Jessy Lanza, her most clear, authentic and best to date. A1. Don’t Leave Me Now

World Of Echo are proud to announce the long-awaited reissue, of the self-titled debut album by Bristol’s Movietone. Originally released in 1995 by Planet Records and reissued on CD in 2003 by The Pastels ’ Geographic Music imprint, this is the first time Movietone has been reissued on vinyl. An expanded double-LP edition, it includes the extra tracks from the 2003 CD (their first two singles, and an unreleased demo of “Chance Is Her Opera”), and adds three more unearthed
gems: demos of “Alkaline Eye ” and “She Smiled Mandarine Like”, and an early take of “Late July”, recorded in a garden by Dave Pearce (Flying Saucer Attack) in 1993. Taken together, this is the definitive collection of music from the first phase of one of Bristol’s most remarkable groups.

When Otis Redding recorded "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" in late 1967, the singer knew that the song was a milestone in his creative evolution. But before Redding got the chance to explore his new direction, he was killed, along with most of his backup band the Bar-Kays, in a plane crash while on tour. Released just a few weeks after his death, the song shot to Number One on the Pop and R&B charts, eventually winning Redding a pair of posthumous Grammy awards. The album bearing the song's title was assembled by the singer's frequent collaborator Steve Cropper, who played guitar on nearly all of Otis' Stax sessions as well as co-writing "Dock of the Bay" and countless other songs with Redding. Drawing mainly from unreleased and little-heard tracks spanning Redding's three-year Stax career, the album demonstrates the depth and breadth of his talent, while hinting at what might have been.
The aptly titled 1966 release The Soul Album is one of the most beloved LPs in Otis Redding's catalogue, and a powerful evocation of this singular soul icon's massive talent and impressive versatility. While such original tunes as "Cigarettes and Coffee," "Good to Me," "Just One More Day" and "Any Ole Way" demonstrate Redding's remarkable songwriting talent, his remarkable interpretive gifts are spotlighted on his deeply compelling versions as Sam Cooke's "Chain Gang," Smokey Robinson's "It's Growing," Roy Head's "Treat Her Right" and the Wilson Pickett/Eddie Floyd hit "634-5789." With gritty, fluid grooves provided by the Stax studio team of Booker T. and the MGs, Isaac Hayes and the Memphis Horns, The Soul Album captures Otis Redding hitting his musical stride.
Considered by many soul connoisseurs to be Otis Redding's finest and most fully realized LP, 1966's Otis Blue delivers a compelling encapsulation of all of the qualities that made Redding the greatest soul performer of his era. In addition to the artist's self-penned classics "Respect" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long," Otis Blue spotlights the artist's peerless interpretive skills, as he puts his dynamic stamp upon such iconic tunes as the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," The Temptations' "My Girl," B.B. King's "Rock Me Baby," "You Don't Miss Your Water" and Solomon Burke's "Down in the Valley." Otis also pays tribute to his idol Sam Cooke, giving his all to a trio of Cooke tunes, "A Change Is Gonna Come," "Shake" and "Wonderful World."

After nearly a quarter-century as one of its generation’s most daring and defining bands, Animal Collective remains committed to the beginner’s mind. The idea, after all, is written into their unwritten constitution—four members, capable of moving in and out of the ensemble as needed while maintaining their own rich solo lives and enterprises. They’ve long treated the stage like a workshop, too, testing the untested terrain of unfinished songs without the safety net of studio takes and street dates.
What’s more, the band’s structure has long been that of a playground, an open space for exercising and indulging new notions and influences, for saying “Why not?” from way up on the high beams. Maybe that means allowing Panda Bear to focus on his drumming more or encouraging Deakin to dig more deeply into his piano playing. Or perhaps it is giving Avey Tare and Geologist’s burgeoning interest in Renaissance music—plainchant, the hurdy-gurdy, gilded polyphony—space to bloom. Indeed, those impulses are at the very core of Isn’t It Now?, the second staggering Animal Collective album in as many years and a striking landmark on their joyously circuitous journey.
At this point, it is almost impossible to say what makes for a classic Animal Collective album; the standard fluctuates with the weather, your temperament, whatever chemicals may or may not waft through your mind. But from start to finish, first listen to last, Isn’t It Now? absolutely lands as a classic, its mix of playfulness and earnestness, glittery pop and tessellated textures seeming to synthesize and update all that has ever made and still makes this band so compelling. It is experienced and wise, energized and young, the work of four people committed to finding the frontier of a beginner’s mind, together.

All The Clubs Are Broken King’s WalkBlonde Redhead return with ‘Sit Down for Dinner,’ their first album in nine years and debut for section1. Its title a nod to the often-sacred communal ritual of sharing a meal with those you love, this immersive, meticulously crafted album appropriately serves as an expression of persistent togetherness — a testament to the unique internal logic Blonde Redhead have refined over their three-decade existence.
Formed in the 1993 New York indie underground, Blonde Redhead quickly found a place on Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley’s label, Smells Like, before releasing beloved records on Touch & Go and 4AD that traced an arc from angular indie-rock to cosmopolitan art pop. The trio might have been a quintessential ’90s band, if not for the fact that they continuously kept going, growing, never confined to any era but the present.
‘Sit Down for Dinner’ lands as perhaps the strongest record in a 30-year catalog that’s already as illustrious as it is varied. Understated yet visceral melodies charge each song, creating a foil to lyrics about the inescapable struggles of adulthood: communication breakdown in enduring relationships, wondering which way to turn, holding onto your dreams.

“Guided by life experiences, Lindsay Lou's sound and songwriting continues to evolve and intertwine her sturdy Bluegrass roots with progressive Americana and Folk.” – PBS
Nashville artist Lindsay Lou’s captivating vocals are capable of untold multitudes: a molasses-sweet instrument equally capable of clarion ache, slicing deep into the soul. The daughter of a literal coal-miner and millwright, and the granddaughter of a teacher gone Rainbow Gathering healer, Lou honed her honest and resonant style with her bluegrass-inspired band, Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys, and Michigan supergroup, Sweet Water Warblers (Rachael Davis, May Erlewine), excavating elements of bluegrass, folk, Americana, and soulful pop for their emotional depths. Whether bathing in the radiant sunset of Tennessee or digging into the rich loam of her midwest upbringing, Lou has an innate ability to bring an immediacy to both affairs of the heart and philosophical thought. On her new album Queen of Time, Lou captures a new arc of haloed beauty, becoming unattainable in her own way—a vibrant, powerful woman who can share herself with the world, and yet define a mystic sense of inner self as well.
“I saw a literal manifestation of the sacred feminine, and had this profound sense that I was meant to embody it,” recalls celebrated singer-songwriter Lindsay Lou after journeying through a hallucinogenic ritual that would inform the way she processed waves of grief in the sea of change ahead of her. The loss of her grandmother, the end of her marriage, and the overwhelming turmoil of COVID lockdowns found the Nashville-based artist on a spiritual journey of self-knowledge and healing with this gift from the mystic swirl. On her new album Queen of Time, Lou explores that quest across ten tracks of tender, heartbreakingly beautiful music. Featuring a gamut of guests including GRAMMY® Award-winners Billy Strings and Jerry Douglas, Queen of Time celebrates love and loss, but above all, the art of living as an unattainably—a vibrant, powerful woman who can share herself with the world, and yet define a mighty sense of inner self as well.

It’s clear, when looking at Jlin’s body of work, and her recent activities, that she could well be the definition of what a creative composer looks and sounds like in 2023. She’s able to work across borders in many different environments and situations. Her work, and sound, is fluid and not locked into genre. The only apt title for her now is ‘composer.’ Let’s be clear - she’s not EDM, IDM, electronic, footwork or post-footwork. She’s simply Jlin.
Last year she played a live tribute to Philip Glass in New York with Kronos Quartet – since then Glass has become a friend and major influence – “Our conversations are always and insightful and full of wisdom. His thoughts on the power of simplicity, and the importance of authenticity in art resonated deeply with me. Philip always encourages me to be patient with myself, and enjoy my journey.”
At this point we have to mention her collaboration with Chicago’s Third Coast Percussion - ‘Perspective’ - since it’s also the title of this six-track mini-album. And of course, we’d be remit if we didn’t point out that Third Coast Percussion’s acoustic version of ‘Perspective’ saw Jlin shortlisted as a finalist for The 2023 Pulitzer Prize in Music! Jlin notes how “Working with T.C.P. was a rewarding experience. I love their constant driving ambition. When I would go to their studio we would experiment as much as we could, and that to me is the beauty of composing.” Note that the CD version of ‘Perspective’ adds the four tracks from her ‘Embryo’ EP, apt since ‘Embryo’ itself was the 7th Perspective piece.
To shift perspective slightly, Jlin notes that collaborating with dance companies, especially those of Wayne McGregor and Kyle Abraham “has seen a significant evolution in my work.” She adds, “Working with Kyle and AIM, I felt the need to incorporate more organic percussion and drums. The raw, visceral nature of Kyle's choreography demanded a more tactile, grounded sound. I believe that music and dance are deeply interconnected, and the rhythm and physicality of organic percussion needs to mirror the dancers' movements whether it is conceptually or abstract.”
The organic aspect of her composition ‘Dissonance,’ a key cut on her new mini-album sounds like it might have been written for Kyle and AIM but, like the entire release, it was in fact written for Third Coast Percussion. With the organic drums in the track being a part of what Jlin calls her “from scratch” foundation. For many ‘Dissonance’ will be a first glimpse at Jlin’s mastery of organic sounds. It’s a stunning work that still showcases her distinct approach to organic percussion. Further audible evidence can also be heard all over her new mini-album. She continues to evolve her sound and her approaches to composition on a steady and constant basis.
Jlin’s new mini-album “Perspective” works as a catch-up for those wanting new music from her, and wanting to hear how her sound is evolving. Tune in. There’s much more ahead.

Jazz master Chick Corea’s unconventional vision of a classical performance shines through in his interaction with the Orchestra da Camera Della Sardegna, turning the acclaimed chamber orchestra into a large-scale jazz ensemble. His unorthodox approach adds a touch of playfulness to the Mozart & Gershwin pieces performed while upholding Corea’s obvious reverence for their music. His joyous fusion sets the tone for the musicians and the audience, creating a truly captivating and boundarypushing experience.
The recording captures the essence of Corea’s musical vision, his appreciation for classical traditions, and his undeniable genius as a performer and improviser. It stands as a testament to his lasting influence and his eternal quest to push the boundaries of music.
Through his work as a composer and a performer, he sought to bridge the gap between genres, embracing the universality and enduring power of classical music. Corea realized this ambition fully during this live performance and was eager to release the recording as an album that would inspire jazz and classical music lovers equally.
Candid Records is proud to bring this extraordinary recording to his fans as he envisioned it.

A masterful fusion of classical and jazz that brings a fresh vitality to the music of Mozart
A legendary lineup of blues & jazz icons, including Buddy Guy, Shemekia Copeland, George Benson, Keb’ Mo’, and Robert Cray join the Count Basie Orchestra for a hard-swinging set of joyous jump blues
Led by musical director Scotty Barnhart, the Count Basie Orchestra keeps Basie’s unmistakable style alive and thriving around the world.
In the great traction of the Basie Swings albums comes this explosive album of collaborations with some of the greatest living blues and jazz artists, Basie Swings The Blues
In preparation for these sessions, Barnhart took a pilgrimage to the Mississippi Delta to immerse himself in the land where blues began. The resulting album is joyful mix of downhome blues with the deep swing and sophistication that only The Count Basie Orchestra can provide. As Count Basie famously once said, “our blues will make your blues go away.”
Produced by Barnhart along with Grammy-winning producer John Burk (Ray Charles Genius Love Company), and Grammy-winning drummer/producer Steve Jordan (The Rolling Stones), the album brings together Buddy Guy, Bobby Rush, Keb’ Mo’, Shemekia Copeland, Robert Cray, Charlie Musselwhite, Betty LaVette, Ledisi, George Benson, and others to bring the blues and swing back together for a set that surges with the energy and jive of the jump-blues era.

The album is a reflection of Strohm’s personal journey, which includes experiencing significant loss and rediscovering his love for songwriting. His past work serves as a strong foundation for the powerful songcraft showcased in this collection of songs.

The songs compiled by Mikey Young (Total Control / Eddy Suppression Ring) and Keith Abrahamsson (Head of A&R at Anthology Recordings) for Sad About The Times arrived in the wake of the psychedelic sixties; after the high-flying idealism had run its course and singer songwriters were ascendant. They all could have been hits - each with a different flavor, all subtly conveying universal emotions that are hard to describe but easy to feel.
Following Sad About the Times arrives …Still Sad Provided a proper vinyl treatment by popular demand, and featuring fittingly campy artwork by Brian Blomberth, …Still Sad continues, and encapsulates, a tradition of musical malaise that feels right even when it feels so wrong.

Enter a garden of progressive celestial harmonies, tight bass grooves, and organ-drenched solos that ripple through the band’s 1971 release. Given more room to freely experiment, Gypsy brings even more latin-flavored progressive rock through frontmen and principle songwriters James “Owl” Walsh and Enrico Rosenbaum’s wildly creative minds. Pressed on violet vinyl!
Often referred to as proto prog rock, Gypsy’s latin-flavored percussion, blue-eyed soul ballads, heavy psychedelic guitars and breezy southern rock all combine to create some of the best American progressive rock. Their freedom to experiment with various tempos, moods, and genres makes this follow up album to their double LP debut a worthy contender to groups like Chicago and Santana.
With more of a focus on percussion and melody, In The Garden is bright and catchy, and further builds on the foundation the band laid with their first album. Though successful touring musicians, their original releases never became commercially successful - eventually leading percussionists Joe Lala to play with musicians like Stephen Stills and Joe Walsh, while Bill Lordan later joined Robin Trower’s band.

IN THE BINS
27 YEARS AWAY! PHENOMENAL ‘60s GARAGE FROM MINNESOTA’S GESTURES!
Along with a few other Twin Cities chart toppers, The Gestures’ “Run, Run, Run” became a national hit and even earned a spot on Kaye’s legendary Nuggets compilation in 1972. Full of shimmering guitars, opulent harmonies, and good ol’ rock ‘n’ roll, the band was limited to a handful of singles before going their separate ways. Here you’ll find a full LP’s worth of Gestures on vinyl, all killer no filler!
In California, the Gestures were especially well-received, maybe because “Run, Run, Run” had the lightness, the hook, and infectious drive of the California surf and car band hits. Record World’s hot picks column called it a surf-like sound that should endear them to teens. The slice is a hard-driving ditty. Cash Box said the Gestures bow was a hard-rock- ing, Liverpool-sounding affair... powerhouse instrumental support on this haunting entry. There’s a complete change of pace in the soft-sounding uptempo undercut.
“‘Run, Run, Run’ hit #1 in the Twin Cities, #3 in Los Angeles, #1 in New York and #3-5 in Oklahoma City. It reached the top of the local C&N Sales jukebox charts, cracked Billboard Magazine’s top 40, and as I mentioned before, was even played on Bandstand. It was right up there with records by the Hondells, Gene Pitney, Jay & the Americans, and all the early British bands – including the Beatles.”

The story of howdies all around is the story of a group of friends getting together to share songs around a campfire. At its heart is a love for the hardscrabble heroes of Country Music’s early days and the freewheeling feeling of the Outlaw era. Howdies All Around bares bones that are the musical styles of Appalachia and the old Blues that came together to create a distinctly American art form.

The six members of the howdies each bring a unique musical background that combines to create a singular sound. Their Athens, GA home has long been an artistic haven for all genres of music and an open forum for shared expression. The result is a place where outsiders flourish and the rules of musical tradition are often bent or even broken with a wink and a smile. Produced by David Barbe and T. Hardy Morris and recorded at Chase Park Transduction, only Athens could create a group like The Howdies and a record like Howdies All Around. A little bit loose, a little bit homemade but overflowing with the love of friendship and the sheer joy of creating something new. newwestrecords.com
Jerry David DeCicca’s 5th solo album, New Shadows, is a Kafkaesque, avant-Americana meditation, surreal and ruminative, featuring David Hidalgo and Steve Berlin (from Los Lobos), guitarist Jeff Parker, tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis, trumpeter Aquiles Navarro (from Irreversible Entanglements), singer Rosali Middleman (Rosali), and composer/sound archivist, Brian Harnetty
New Shadows peaks into corners where interior and exterior worlds collide, where miniscule revelations can be found in the darkness of ourselves and our community: lost children, unheard prayers, bugs, money, depression, romantic relationships, regret, and Zoom funerals, all become a lens for self-reflection.
The production (by Don Cento and JDD) is modeled after DeCicca’s favorite early 80’s albums (Lindsey Buckingham’s Law & Order, ZZ Top’s Afterburner, Robert Palmer’s Clues, Lou Reed’s New Sensations,) while the songs’ architectures and pathos lean more towards Warren Zevon, Townes Van Zandt, and John Prine - all these record-makers and songwriters are embedded in DeCicca’s DNA, having seen them, and in some cases met them after gigs, when his brain was still developing between the ages of 13-19 years old.
The virtual collaborators are the musicians who kept DeCicca company on his stereo while isolated in his rural town, Bulverde, TX: Brian Harnetty’s Many Hands, Rosali’s No Medium, Irreversible Entanglements’ Who Sent You?, James Brandon Lewis’s Jessup Wagon, Jeff Parker’s JP’s Myspace Beats and Suite for Max Brown, and the Los Lobos discography.
New Shadows isn’t so much about DeCicca’s new discoveries, as it is the penumbrous reminder of what’s always been there.

Blight Year is a cosmic black metal bulldozer, On Anti-God Hand’s second album, frontman Will Ballantyne enlists engineer Colin Marston (Krallice, Indricothere, Gorguts, etc.) and powerhouse drummer Greg Fox (Liturgy, Ben Frost, Colin Stetson). Together, they veer from pummelling odd time signatures and downtuned riffs into ascendant, widescreen climaxes that subvert tired black metal tropes. Ballantyne is an in-demand performer, playing guitar for DEBBY FRIDAY’s breakout album GOOD LUCK (Sub Pop), writing and performing electronic music as City, and performing endurance performance art with Chinese collective TRANCE. The result is an ideological and sonic crystallization that pushes Anti-God Hand’s cosmic black metal into something still more emphatic, distinctive, dynamic.
American Dreams Records is a transcontinental experimental label dedicated to showcasing art inspired by patience, intention, perseverance, hope, and leaving the world a little more beautiful than we found it. Our ethos is rooted in story-telling, inclusivity, community, and cohabitation with the natural world.

XO Skeleton is the supple, steady, uncanny new album by La Force: a mixture of haunted pop and hot-blooded R&B that glistens at the meeting-point between life, death and love. “In dreams, the dead and living are the same,” Ariel Engle sings on “October,” her voice shimmering. “Maybe that’s why I’m better in the dark.”
The finality of death? The protection that another person’s love can or cannot bestow? These are body questions, matters of breath and flesh and pulse, which is the stuff at the centre of all of La Force’s music — beginning on her 2018 debut and also outward, into Engle’s electrifying work with Broken Social Scene, Big Red Machine, Efrim Menuck, Safia Nolin, and AroarA, her duo with her husband, Andrew Whiteman. La Force’s voice is stunning — somehow luscious and also wise — but so is her point of view — steady, sensitive, physical.
Engle made the album at home, in the house where she grew up, where she got married, where her father died — a place that’s “both completely dead and completely alive,” she says: a structure at the threshold of her inner and outer worlds. Off and on for two whole years, Engle’s old friend, co-producer Warren Spicer (Plants and Animals), would work in her basement until lunch, allowing songs to unfold at heartbeat pace. She’s been “unhealthily obsessed” with death, she says, since she was a child, and XO Skeleton is a kind of reckoning: a coming-to-terms with the oblivion that bookends a life, but also the “gooey centre” of love, loss, touch, and memory.
These nine extraordinary songs are human-scale and intimate, with chord changes like the shifting of limbs. “October,” the lead single, brings us right inside the protective cloak of kisses (or “XO skeleton”) cast by love and memory; at the same time, it explores the spookiness of that space, the movement of invisible spirits, like a saxophone rippling through a hall of mirrors. Other tracks were informed by Engle’s participation in “Song A Day,” a COVID-era invitation-only songwriters’ circle, where La Force worked alongside musicians like Leslie Feist, Maggie Rogers, Beck, and Big Thief’s Buck Meek.
Throughout, XO Skeleton is electric + vivid, and also tactile + grimy. It bends and turns with its every shift of pulse — 35 mournful minutes; but also searching, turned on. Like a body, you might say. Or the memory of one.
LA FORCE is the mesmerizing solo project of Ariel Engle, who has spent more than a decade as one of Canada’s most sought-after musical collaborators. Engle’s experience reaches from Broken Social Scene’s indie rock to Québecois pop and the experimental avant-garde, culminating in her first two solo records, La Force (2018), and the astonishing XO Skeleton, due in 2023.
• Engle founded the duo AroarA with husband, Andrew Whiteman, and in 2013, formed a “three-headed” supergroup called Hydra, which featured Engle, Leslie Feist and Snowblink’s Daniela Gesundheit She also joined Whiteman and Feist as part of the sprawling Broken Social Scene, making her electrifying studio debut on 2017’s Hug of Thunder. Engle released La Force in 2018 garnering a Polaris Prize long-list nomination and drawing attention from Stereogum, The Globe & Mail, and NPR’s Morning Becomes Eclectic
• The National’s Aaron Dessner recruited Engle to appear on the new Big Red Machine LP alongside Bon Iver, Taylor Swift, Fleet Foxes and Sharon Van Etten

HIGHLIFE MEETS 90S STREET SOUL AND R&B ON MINI COMPILATION
Modern highlife luminary Rex Omar has been a force within the Ghanaian music scene for over 30 years. Now Soundway presents five of his premier cuts remastered for a new self-titled EP.
Over his career Rex Omar has evolved the genre, pushing boundaries and dazzling listeners. A definitive piece of his repertoire comes via his Dangerous album: while it was selfproduced and recorded in London circa 1997, upon CD release it saw success mainly within his homeland of Ghana.
An irresistible blend of street-soul-come-highlife, with elements of bouncing 90s RnB/hip-hop, it was developed with help from Ibibio Sound Machine’s Kari Bannerman and prolific Jamaican producer Bill Campbell. From this album rising London producer and DJ Aroop Roy revisits the four-to-the-floor excursion ‘Dada’, repurposing for today’s dancefloor with the addition of fizzing synth chords and stabs.
While Omar regularly raps on his earlier works, on ‘Kele Ngele’ (taken from his 2004 album Ajala) we hear a yearning melodic vocal over a more laid back RnB beat. This rounds out the new Rex Omar EP for the discerning listener to experience the full breadth of his inventive output.

Guy: We played a great party, like the total best, with SKAM over in Virginia.
Brendan: SKAM are a good band. Look out for SKAM .
Guy: SKAM are hot.
- Excerpt from Insurrection interview, Touch and Go mag, 1983 (three years before Brendan and Guy joined Fugazi)
Lost in time yet always in season, here’s a blast of that ol’ perennial, the punk rock, representative of the swiftly changing times around Bailey’s Crossroads, just outside Washington, D.C., in the early 80s. Skam recorded this stuff in ’82–’83, then broke up, leaving these songs to be released . . . maybe never? Or more preferably, now, to race into the bloodstream of jaded, faded today with all the vigor and rigor of Skam’s eternal youth.
Though they didn’t release any records during their three years of existence, it’d be wrong to call Skam “never-was” — in addition to these recordings, there’s a trail of flyers for shows with Scream, No Trend, United Mutation and Media Disease, as well as the memories of the student alumni from Bishop O’Connell High, class of ’83 or so.
The conglomeration of scenes around the greater D.C. area at that time produced a variety of bands, but the prevailing recollection of the era is of the incendiary hardcore
punk and subsequent straight edge values of the Dischord bands. The band that became Skam was a world apart; they were posited for the first time by 8th graders Vince Forcier and Jack Anderson at a Jackson Browne concert, and their initial rehearsals in their parents’ basement were highlighted by covers of Beatles, Stones, Who and Led Zeppelin songs. Bad covers. It wasn’t until they’d been playing a bit that they discovered The Ramones, and it was then that the die was cast and pedal pressed to the metal for another frantic couple of years.
The Skam recordings from ’82 have an undeniably Clash -like countenance that sets them definitively apart from the “First Four” of Dischord — in some ways, prefiguring the pop-punk sound of Green Day at the dawn of the ’90s instead — but subsequent recordings found them quickly evolving —or devolving — into a personal mastery of savage riffs and tempos, as well as post-punk conceptions. But even as they were verging into this new territory, their three years together had frayed their alliance and they soon broke up. Jack joined No Trend, Vince played in Racer X and then, the second version of Second Wind . And life went on. But the rediscovered Skam tapes make for an incredible addendum to the more well-known music of that incredible time and place. No Name is the name, grab it now!

salute’s critically acclaimed ‘ Shield’ EP is now available on rose colored LP via Techinicolour.
The Austrian producer has created a dynamic back catalog, moving through RnB, dubstep, dance, hip-hop, even jazz and gospel. New EP ‘Shield’ brings a once again elevated sound.
‘Shield’ is a cocktail of UK dance and electro-pop featuring Filipino born, London based artist No Rome, and the pensive yet euphoric closer ‘Feels Like My Hands Are On Fire’, with salute’s own vocals featuring on the track, co-produced by George Daniel of The 1975.
The two singles from the project, ‘Wait For It’ and ‘Peach’ ft. Sammy Virji, were huge electronic cuts that garnered attention on TikTok with support from Billboard, Mixmag, DJ Mag, Clash Magazine and more. They’re building an impressive run of live sets including Glastonbury, Boiler Room Melbourne (where they debuted both tracks), Lost Village, Secret Garden Party, The Warehouse Project, Parklife, fabric and Field Day, as well as their first tour across the US and Australia. Named as one of the DJs who defined 2022 by Mixmag, salute also remixed the likes of DJ Seinfeld and Kaytranada
With each release feeling like salute is continuously growing into their greatness, ‘Shield’ EP presents a fully fledged innovator in electronic music.

Tired of “Monster Mash”? Through with calling “Ghostbusters”? If your Halloween playlist is begging for something different, look no further than the frightfully fun Music to Freak Your Friends and Break Your Lease. Don’t believe us? Take The Bride of Frankenstein’s word for it–she’s on the cover! Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records, in our relentless quest to leave no musical stone unturned, have given a new lease on life to one of the most unusual records of all time. Upon its initial release in 1974, this “Symphony for Tape Delay, IBM Instruction Manual, & Ohm Septet” was credited to “recognized raconteur, genius, composer, musicologist, conductor” Heins Hoffman-Richter, whom the original liner notes blithely inform us, “died from an ear lobe tumor.” It turns out that the late Hoffman-Richter was none other than best-selling poet and all-time cult music hero Rod McKuen…but you won’t find any cats named Sloopy here. Instead, Music to Freak Your Friends and Break Your Lease is Rod McKuen’s very own Metal Machine Music. He immersed himself in musique concrète, or music which utilizes recorded sounds as raw material, for the most unusual album in his vast discography. Like Lou Reed’s later experiment in feedback and noise, Freak Your Friends features no songs or traditionally structured compositions…but it just might scare off those candy-hungry kiddies on your doorstep with its Moog-tastic mayhem! Simply put, this wild journey through the electronic underground has to be heard to be believed…and this is its first-ever reissue. It arrives on seaglass with black swirl vinyl limited to 750 copies, in a package that replicates the collectible original release and also includes an insert with new liner notes from The Second Disc’s Joe Marchese. Music to Freak Your Friends and Break Your Lease will indeed act as potent pal and landlord repellent…and it just might leave you shouting, “It’s alive!”

After years of visiting graveyards, combing through haunted houses, and pursuing (heh heh) dead ends, we finally tracked down the rights to the legendary Frankie Stein and His Ghouls series! Why did we risk life, limb, and livelihood to find these records? Well, first of all, long-time Real Goners know we LOVE these campy ‘60s takes on horror rock—witness our previous macabre moves into the Zacherle, Munsters and Groovie Goolies franchises. But there’s something extra special about these Frankie Stein and His Ghouls records. You wouldn’t think that Halloween records released by a subsidiary (Power Records) of a children’s specialty label (Peter Pan Records) would be so…er…visceral, but these records are definitely the most out there of their kind. And there might be a reason for that…you see, it has been revealed that the Power label enlisted the aid of some very, very interesting musicians for some of its projects. For instance, the imprint’s 1966 album Batman and Robin by The Sensational Guitars of Dan and Dale was actually produced by Tom Wilson of Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground, and Mothers of Invention fame—and the band was made up free jazz legend Sun Ra and members of The Blues Project! Which has led to all sorts of speculation about who Frankie Stein and His Ghouls actually were; among the names bandied about are guitarist Duane Eddy, jazz saxophonist Max Greger, and, yes, Sun Ra and the Blues Project again. At any rate, prepare yourself for frenetic rock-and-twist workouts punctuated by deranged howls and shattering sound effects. And with a back story like this, it’s no wonder original copies of these albums sell for downright horrifying prices!

The 1990 debut album from Pale Saints, The Comforts of Madness, is an outstanding record that owed as much to post-punk and L.A.’s Paisley Underground scene than it did to shoegaze. The Sunday Times called it “an unintended indie manifesto: music that is at once wayward and concise, dissonant and beautiful.”
Shortly after its release and in need of a second live guitarist, Lush founding member Meriel Barham joined the Leeds trio of Ian Masters, Graeme Naysmith and Chris Cooper, bringing a new dynamic to the band.
Having previously worked well with producer Hugh Jones (Echo & The Bunnyman, Modern English, The Sound), he did a brilliant job recording their second album, In Ribbons (1992), despite some studio tensions. Brooklyn Vegan said in a recent celebration of the album that it was the “push and pull between Masters’ outsider tendencies and (the rest’s) commercial interests that makes In Ribbons so good. If some of the wild, ragged edges of Comforts of Madness have been smoothed off, the album makes up for it with scope and beauty. And there’s still no shortage of weird.”
Missing its original release date last year due to Covid delays and a production plant in meltdown, In Ribbons is finally getting the 30th Anniversary celebration it deserves with a special double LP / CD release – the first disc being the UK version of the album, the second a bonus disc of never before heard demos (including their first attempt at Slapp Happy’s ‘Blue Flower’ and Ian’s 4 track recording of ‘Kinky Love’) and two brass band versions by The Tintwistle Band
Coming in a beautiful gatefold sleeve, the limited double LP edition is being pressed on unpigmented vinyl by The Vinyl Factory in West London. A single disc, black vinyl version is also being released.

With nine critically acclaimed releases, a #1 single, a JUNO Award, and a devoted fan base blanketing the globe, roots-pop combo the Good Lovelies are among Canada’s brightest musical lights. The hardworking trio of Caroline Brooks, Kerri Ough, and Susan Passmore, are guitar-wielding songwriters all, and queens of the goosebump–raising three-part harmony.
On “We Will Never Be the Same” you can hear the seventeen years Caroline Marie Brooks, Kerri Ough & Susan Passmore have spent singing and writing together in the lush vocal arrangements, layered guitars, garnishes of banjo and wurlitzer and rich drum and percussion textures.
"We Will Never Be the Same" is Good Lovelies’ rst collection of original material since their 2018 release "Shapeshifters" and, in terms of instrumentation and musical tone, harkens back to their acoustic, rootsy beginnings nearly two decades ago. It is a powerful collection of songs that explore the entry into the second act of life - into the myriad of feelings and experiences that accompany middle-age, raising young children and facing the grief of losing loved ones.
There is power and strength in this album; a story of lives well-lived and an undercurrent of hope. It is a testament not only to their artistry, but also their humanity, and is an album that will continue to endear this beloved group to fans of all ages. "We Will Never Be the Same" is a beautiful o ering that has been well worth the wait.

“I imagine myself playing these songs in a small club that is slowly burning,” says A. Savage of his second solo record, Several Songs about Fire. After more than a decade in New York, the co-frontman of Parquet Courts has left the city, marking his exit with a masterpiece of maturity and a worthy corollary to his first solo venture, 2017’s Thawing Dawn. “Fire is something you have to escape from. This album is a burning building, and these songs are things I’d leave behind to save myself.”
Produced by John Parish on a 1” 16-track in just ten days in Bristol and studded by the support of Cate Le Bon and Jack Cooper (Modern Nature, Ultimate Painting) as well as saxophonist Euan Hinshelwood (Cate Le Bon), drummer Dylan Hadley (Kamikaze Palm Tree, White Fence), and violinist Magdalena McLean (Caroline), Savage’s outsize gifts as a lyricist and observer – a quality Parish calls “an emotional openness guarded by a laconic wit” – shine. Worrying questions of wealth and poverty, self and other, Savage displays the poet’s gift of knowing when to narrate and when to vanish, leaving the listener to their own emotional privacy rather than instructing them how to feel.
The end result is tantamount to psychic odyssey, with “Elvis in the Army” placing us in a subterranean venue where the livid, ratifying cymbal raises the room’s blood pressure and “Mountain Time”, evoking an austere waltz playing in a desolate house, returning those listening to life. Influenced by Sybille Baier and Townes Van Zandt, Savage joins a canon of songwriters constantly dilating aperture and perspective. In rendering the signage of laundromats and threats of debt collectors as glistering and totemic as the scope of mountains, rivers, seas, and skies, Savage finds hopes and curses in equal measure.
Celebrating the 10 year anniversary of Jon Hopkins' seminal fourth solo album Immunity.
A confident, dramatic record defined by an acute sense of physicality and place, Immunity felt and still feels, like the accompaniment to a journey of creativity, a trip inside Hopkins’ mind. It brought together everything he had learnt and experienced already but also paved the way for the evolution of his future records, most recently, 2021’s Music For Psychedelic Therapy

Immunity was a turning point in Hopkins’ career. Previously, he had been an elusive character, known to most as an expert producer, Ivor Novello-nominated composer of film scores, remixer and long-term collaborator of Brian Eno and Coldplay. On its release in 2013, Immunity announced itself as a powerful, multi-faceted beast, packed with the most aggressively dancefloor-focussed music Hopkins had ever made. However, Immunity was never just about the techno behemoths - of which there were several. Hopkins wanted the album to help people to reach different states of mind. From graceful and mournful piano notes, stirring choral drones, he was always seeking new melodic routes to aid this. His tendency to use physical, real-world sounds as the basis for many of the album’s rhythms allowed him to craft one of the most human electronic albums of the decade.

Sun Ra, notorious for his aggressive keyboard attack and seemingly schizophrenic stylings, here offers a unique selection playing the celeste-like Fender Rhodes electric piano, which has a distinct sound (think Doors' "Riders on the Storm") and an interesting history. This is Ra sound at his most relaxed and contemplative state.
This Sun Ra 1980 solo set at Haverford College has been kicking around the internet and in the digital libraries of Ra collectors for years, though it has not previously been properly mastered or commercially issued. Like many events in Ra's history, this gig has a story that goes beyond the music. Ra's presence onstage that night came about through an unforeseen chain of events that unfolded up until concert time.
This is a very unique performance. Sun Ra is notorious for his aggressive keyboard attack and seemingly schizophrenic stylings—which can musically rocket from A to Z and back without transitional bridges. This set offers a marked contrast. Ra's instrument here is the celeste-like Fender Rhodes electric piano, which has a distinct sound (instantly recognizable in the Doors' "Riders on the Storm") and an interesting history. There are few pyrotechnics in this performance, and much restraint. Ra sounds relaxed and contemplative. It's Soothing Sounds for Saturnians.

Label: too pure
Following an initial 1991 EP on Creation Records Moonshake then signed to Beggars label too pure. Their debut album Eva Luna was released in 1992 by too pure everywhere except the US, where it was released by Matador.
Moonshake was formed in 1991 by David Callahan (vocals, guitars, samplers), formerly of The Wolfhounds, and New York musician Margaret Fiedler (vocals, guitars, samplers). Callahan and Fiedler recorded a demo for Creation Records, and were joined by John Frenett (bass) and Miguel Morland (“Mig”, drums) to record and release the First EP for Creation in 1991 . They took their name from a 1973 single by Can. Both Fiedler and Callahan wrote songs, and they would (generally) sing on the songs that they wrote. Their output of shared inspiration produced wildly different results - Can, PIL, Kraftwerk, MBV, Erik B & Rakim were a melting pot that made Moonshake somewhat uncategorizable, and as Margaret noted in an interview, “Moonshake was a collision - it was supposed to be a collision.”
Their debut album Eva Luna took its name from a novel by Chilean author Isabel Allende and the tracks on it are split evenly between the two songwriters. Callahan’s songs are somewhat angry, dissonant, post-punk affairs, while Fiedler’s are just as angular, but her quieter sometimes near whispered vocals compliment her writing partner’s equally. Producer/engineer Guy Fixsen, fresh from his work on My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, was instrumental in making the album cohesive.
This album has been critically revisited often since its original release, with Tiny Mix Tapes describing their sound as “an updated take on Can and Public Image Limited’s rhythmic propulsion with noisier guitar work and a predilection for sampling influenced by The Young Gods.”
“Eva Luna really is one hell of a ground-breaking record, and it stands resolutely alone among all of the albums released in 1992 as no other band has managed to create anything remotely similar before or since.
It really is a unique album with few equals.”
Josh Ritter’s “Purple Rain” vinyl edition of 2013’s The Beast in Its Tracks. Limited to 1000 copies worldwide and newly remastered and optimized for vinyl. The black vinyl edition of Beast has been out of print for some time, and there hasn’t been a color edition of Beast in over TEN YEARS. The last color LP was the limited edition of 1000 clear vinyl in 2013. Includes album download card, and full color marketing sticker with: “Purple Rain 1000 LP limited edition, Remastered + Optimized for Vinyl.”
The Beast in Its Tracks may well be remembered as Ritter’s divorce record, as it was written and recorded in the wake of his 18-month marriage suddenly dissolving. As Ritter says, “In the year after my marriage ended, I realized that I had more new songs than I’d ever had at one time. Far from the grand, sweeping feel of the songs on So Runs the World Away, these new songs felt like rocks in the shoe, hard little nuggets of whatever they were, be it spite, remorse, or happiness. I hadn’t composed this stuff, I’d scrawled it down, just trying to keep ahead of the heartbreak. They needed to be recorded like that. We needed to work fast, make decisions quickly, keep the songs as spare as they could be kept, and above all never allow ourselves to blunt the sharp edges.”
Key Selling Points:
*Limited to 1000 units WORLDWIDE, including Josh’s DTC. “Purple Rain” will not be repressed.
*Digital content and an aggressive social media campaign, including videos and advertising, will drive awareness and interest in this limited edition, including Josh spinning the “purple rain” vinyl, Josh providing new context about Beast and new music, highlights about the new vinyl edition, and more.
*Josh released a 2023 album titled Spectral Lines, and he will continue touring heavily
*The ”Purple Rain” edition is one of SIX vinyl reissues being released over the next six months. Lots of marketing and traffic around the vinyl catalog will continue.

The long-awaited follow-up to his acclaimed 2019 Bloodshot debut
“Harris handles dark humor so deftly, you’ll find yourself simultaneously shaking in your boots, shaking with laughter, and shaking your ass.”
—No Depression
“Those who don’t know the name soon will.”
In Celtic folklore, places in this world where the veil between Heaven and Earth is permeable are known as “thin places.” And if you’re open to something greater than yourself, a thin place comes to you. Jason Hawk Harris knows; he’s been living in one for the last five years.
“The process of grieving my mother’s death, of watching my life kind of fall apart around me brought me to this weird sort of nirvana,” he explains. “In those moments, I could feel these different worlds colliding around me, and I knew I wanted to find a way to capture it.”
With his extraordinary new album, Thin Places, Harris has done precisely that. Written from start to finish as one continuous artistic statement, the set draws on Harris’ extensive background in classical music to create a work of beauty, pain, and catharsis. Blurring the lines between country, gospel, soul, and chamber folk, the songs here are deeply personal, staring down loss, self-destruction, and recovery with unflinching honesty, and the arrangements are similarly bold and cinematic.

It all began with a bath. As Tele Novella’s Natalie Ribbons ran the water and listened to a guided meditation, she never anticipated arriving on the other side with an idea for an album, Poet’s Tooth. “I ended up sitting in that bath and going on quite a visualization journey,” says Ribbons, who resides in Lockhart, Texas, and performs in Tele Novella with Jason Chronis. “The images and feelings that came over me that night made me feel like I had a power that I had been ignoring and taking for granted for years. It was sad and happy at the same time,” Ribbons continues.
As Tele Novella, Chronis (who performs in the beloved and rekindled indie pop band Voxtrot) and Ribbons (who previously performed in the long-running “Victorian punk” project Agent Ribbons) have spent their past two albums creating "Medieval outsider country" on 2016’s House Of Souls and 2021’s Merlynn Belle. Poet’s Tooth –the band’s second album for Kill Rock Stars – steers the duo’s whimsical western-tinted quality into fascinating new directions: cinematic-pop balladry on the autoharp-tinged opener “Young & Free,” gently clip-clopping Americana-folk on “Hard-Hearted Way,” and bass-driven funk on the wry “Eggs In One Basket.” With help from producer Danny Reisch, Tele Novella have crafted their most genre-rich, poetic, and sincere album yet.
“This record delves into the more personal realm than Merlynn Belle,” Ribbons says. “I felt less playful and more urgently myself in a plainspoken way. There's still occasional hints and wisps of our Medieval and Western aesthetic influences, but whatever elements of stylization are in place this time around, I think it just really sounds like us. There's some deep sadness in some of these songs — something I don't think I've ever fully let come out of me with my music. Despair, even. I'm strangely optimistic about sharing that side of things for once because I care about connection and resonance, and it offers more depth and context alongside songs that feel dreamier or grittier.”

“Being an artist, being someone who spends time alone, it is hard not to have feelings of paranoia. You need a delusion of grandeur to make anything in the first place, and that feeds into it…Letting go is a strong aspect of this album. I was doing failed perfectionism before trying to sound chaotic while actually being very controlled. This time I was in the studio playing not trying to make things perfect. That’s not what I’m meant for.” So begins the story of Ethan P. Flynn’s debut album Abandon All Hope, which pours twenty-four years’ worth of experience into songs that recall 70s greats like Randy Newman and Harry Nilsson while dealing with coming of age, friendship, falling in and out of love, navigating the age of anxiety and aspects of young life in the 21st century. All delivered with an emotional intensity that’s rare in an age when the feeling that all has been said and done draws us toward postmodern, ironic detachment.
“Ethan P. Flynn moves in his own lane, blending surreal lyricism with an emotional heft that can’t be easily shrugged off.” - Clash Magazine
“There’s no one out there doing it quite like Flynn.” –DAZED
“An appealingly wayward and unboxable talent”Sunday Times
“Songs and ideas pour out of the prolific Yorkshire musician. No wonder FKA twigs, Jockstrap and Young can’t get enough of him.” - The Face Magazine
Vanishing Twin furthers their exploration of decidedly experimental territories with Afternoon X. Crafted with a playful balance of humour and rigour, with each member embracing the role of the multi-instrumentalist and process, over outcome.
These eight fluttering abstractions, culled, collaged, and built upon from a vast constellation of instruments, samples, and unclaimed sources. Cathy Lucas employs her voice as an instrument and a generator of raw sound, weaving surreal imagery and uncanny juxtapositions amongst the dance and propellant drive. From infectious grooves of the album's title track and the constrained minimalism of "Subito", to the ambitious heights of pieces like 'The Down Below' and Lazy Garden, which unfurl a psychedelic avant-gardism on the scope and scale of David Axelrod and Scott Walker.
VANISHING TWIN EMBARK UPON A NEW MULTIFACETED JOURNEY THAT COLLECTIVELY CULMINATES AS THE BANDS MOST FORWARD-THINKING AND GROUNDBREAKING RELEASE TO DATE.

Though Chester Watson is only 26, the St. Louis-born rapper and producer has seen enough for several lifetimes —and raps as if he’s tapped into many more. But after a few years of highs, lows, and traumatic odysseys, he was able to stare straight into the abyss and conquer it. The regained confidence is exhibited on fish don’t climb trees, the largely self-produced new album that reaffirms him as one of rap’s great auteurs.
The willingness to both expand his repertoire laterally and dive deeper down each rabbit hole has made Watson’s one of the most quietly rewarding catalogs in hip-hop. In the last half-decade, he’s released Project 0, the apex predator version of the style that he’d been tinkering with since his breakthrough a decade ago with the heady 10-million-plus streaming “Phantom.” There was A Japanese Horror Film, the full-length album from 2020 that sounds like a small team of assassins being trained in the art of hypnosis, and the following year’s glitchy, percussive EP 1997.
Any informed observer would have him on a short list of the genre’s most promising young voices. And they have: Complex hailed him as "one of the best new musicians." Pitchfork said he is "so comfortably and skillfully amongst his influences that he already feels like their peer." Pigeons and Planes named him one of "Best 20 artists Under 20.” But still, something felt very wrong. Watson remembers the period just before the recording of fish as one suffused with paranoia.
Being true to those fractured, discordant feelings requires a prismatic approach. And so you get fish’s exhilarating hairpin turns: from downtempo dub (“bora bora”) to 808s rattling through a haunted house (“tourniquet”), beats that sound as if they’re molting into new shapes in real time (the two-song suite of “daze” and “grey theory”) to ones that that plunge to the bottom of a pocket (“spirits”). Over all of these, Watson proves more dexterous than ever as both a writer and vocalist, able to get his point across in ten syllables or two, in a full sprint or with his feet planted firmly in the mud.
The album’s title comes from the maybe-apocryphal Einstein quote, about how a fish judged by its ability to climb trees will “spend its whole life believing it is stupid.” For Watson, this meant embracing the cheery first half of the quote (“Everybody is a genius”), but also being cognizant of the dark undercurrents that flow just beneath seemingly innocent misjudgments and mis-categorizations. “As a Black person, we’re always judged on criteria that are literally meaningless,” he says. With fish don’t climb trees, he’s committed to only one set of standards: his own.

Five years after winning the Polaris Music Prize with his ground-breaking debut, JEREMY DUTCHER has returned with a radiant exploration of contemporary Indigeneity and his place within it. With songs performed in his people’s Wolasotqey language but also, for the first time, in English, Motewolonuwok extends beyond anything the musician has made before, encompassing traditional song, starlit ballads and staggering orchestrations. “With my first record, the concept was so clear, so complete,” Dutcher says. This time, “I wanted [to make an LP] that wasn’t always so sure of itself.”
Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa, released in 2018, vaulted Dutcher into the upper echelons of Canadian performance, from the Polaris and Juno Award stages to the judges’ panel on Canada’s Drag Race. The follow-up is more intimate, more personal, inspired by his growing understanding of the “middle space” of being Two Spirit — Indigenous and queer. In the Wolasotqey language, Two Spirit people are called “motewolonuwok” — “the people of great spiritual power” — an identity filled with strength and knowledge, which is not dogged by shame.
Dutcher came out as gay when he was 12 — but even that idea, of “coming out,” was imposed upon him by a colonialist framework. Motewolonuwok is a stepping-through and singing-into his full identity. On “’tahcuwi Anelsultipon,” Dutcher stands almost alone on a stage, singing about devotion. “The Land That Held Them,” his tribute to “the ones taken too soon,” shudders with a force that recalls Nina Simone and Anohni. Elsewhere, Dutcher reached for the largest possible frame: a full orchestra, with arrangements by Owen Pallett, and, on tracks like “Sakom,” a 12-voice choir made up of Dutcher’s queer and allied kin, including friends from music school and members of the Queer Songbook Orchestra. Making music is like learning a language, Dutcher says. It’s “an unfurling” — a constant exploration of what you want to say and how you can express it. Motewolonuwok features Wolastoqey traditionals, poetry from by the Cherokee poet Qwo-li Driskill, but also Dutcher’s first songs written in English. This is an acknowledgment of his father’s tongue, and also a way of singing “directly to the newcomer [settler],” in their own language, to tell his community’s stories of grief, resilience and emergence. “I needed to contextualize my own story,” he explains, and Motewolonuwok moves like a collective wish and a corrective medicine.
The album will be released October 6, 2023 via Secret City Records.

Originally a patch of disjointed acoustic demos, time and production guidance from Athens stalwart producer Tommy Trautwein turned Hometown Vampire into a heady and humorous rumination on the dangers of small town celebrity and the ego destruction needed to survive in love, music, or life as a whole. Aesthetically, Hometown Vampire provides a guided tour through 50 years of guitar music, calling out to greats like a prayer, asking for the songs we love to act as guidance through the trouble around us. The characters labeled here as vampires refer to any of the lowlifes we see around us or in ourselves; the punisher at the bar, the chronic failure who’s always got a new scheme, the kinds of people who live in the past and stew in bitterness. Hometown Vampire is a farewell to all the good and bad of music scene chicanery, late night shit-talking, and all the failed romances before.
Hometown Vampire is set for release on October 6, 2023 via Strolling Bones Records.

Midway through the Mandingue groove inferno that is “Dakan Sate, Korotoumi” I knew I had found a gem. Hypnotic guitar solos, heavy bass riffs, psychedelic organ lines, and funky horns … what more could you want? A fixture on the Malian music scene, Leon Keïta was born in Guinea before finding his way to the Malian capital where he worked as a teacher, organiser of cultural festivals, accountant and musician.
Although Leon didn’t make many solo recordings, his songs continue to inspire the reverence of anyone fortunate enough to have heard them. In recent years the song “Dalaka” was rediscovered by Barranquilla’s sound system operator Carlos Estrada and became an unexpected hit on the Caribbean coast of Colombia.
Twelve years after the release of the critically-acclaimed Bambara Mystic Soul compilation, this new compilation takes another deep-dive into Mandingue culture with five sides recorded during Leon Keïta’s late 70s sessions. The LP, pressed on 180g virgin vinyl and housed in a beautiful screen-printed jacket, is limited to 2000 copies worldwide.

This autumn, Erased Tapes are set to release ‘Give It to the Sky: Arthur Russell’s Tower of Meaning Expanded’ by composer and producer Peter Broderick and French 12-piece group Ensemble 0; a complete re-recording of Russell’s epic minimalist orchestral composition originally released in 1983. Released 6th October, ‘Give It to the Sky’ also includes unreleased tracks by Russell which have been restored and re-recorded, resulting in an 80-minute reanimation that threads several lost songs into a meticulous and gorgeous rendering.
Ensemble 0 weave in and out of Broderick’s additions. ‘Corky’, a poignant cowboy ballad that Russell never finished, appears, disappears, and reappears three times, the droning exhalations of ‘Tower of Meaning’ making it feel sweeter and sadder. Arriving just after the triumphant halfway mark, the title track is a sublime meditation on mere existence, about staring at some simple rural scene and marcelling at the miracle of being anywhere at all. It is an apt encapsulation of how this entire project feels – a glorious way to hear something that might have seemed familiar as if for the very first time.
Russell was never much for definitive versions, of course. He was constantly rethinking the possibilities of a piece, of wondering what else it could do. ‘Give it to the Sky’ is a powerful affirmation of those principles, using Tower of Meaning’s framework to build outward and upward, to shape something that functions within Russell’s wondrous, paradoxical world. And ‘Give it to the Sky’ is also not intended to be some definitive last word. Broderick and Ensemble 0 speak already of the ways it may shift on stage, of where else it might lead.
Give it to the Sky: Arthur Russell’s Tower of Meaning Expanded is released digitally and on limited edition vinyl via Erased Tapes Records.

Info:
Over Auto Locator’s ten songs, Del Paxton rip shit like a band entering their second decade of existence. On-the-nose opener “Freight Train Metaphor” throws listeners face rst into the band’s rst album since 2017, with a syncopated pulse and arpeggiating guitar foreshadowing a record replete with punkish, serpentine composition. “Up With a Twist,” the album’s lead track, deals in Del Paxton’s crashing punk vibrance, through which the band explores and laments the uninspired architecture of American sprawl. Second single “Chart Reader”, whose origins trace back to a psychedelic dream inspired by Wayfaring Strangers: Cosmic American Music, sees the trio dabbling in emo Americana, even featuring a nod to John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” Such unashamed references abound throughout Auto Locator, which takes further inspiration from bands like Mock Orange, Third Eye Blind, and Jimmy Eat World, all of whose in uence is clear on “Palpitations” and third single “Spiritual Gymnastics.” Del Paxton’s mix of nostalgic references aims to serve as their primary tool for exploring the contemporary, resulting in a post mortem of the American Empire. Whether intentional or otherwise, it’s an appropriate result for the Upstate NY trio, whose self-awareness feels like a main component of Auto Locator, a feature as crucial to the band as the eponymous tool they used to record their music.

What happens when you take a band operating within the imposing, steel-grey confines of Chicago and ship ’em out to the sunny beaches of southern California to make a record? You get Blinded By Oblivion ! Axis: Sova have crystallized on every level with their latest, dropping a total classic in the process — a perfectly conceived album of head-catching tunes in proliferation, produced to transmit polarities to our synapses with every song. Scintillating polarities! It ain’t Axis: Sova without a creeping sense of inalienable oppositions at work — this time, the brutal truths lie beneath flags of conquest flying in the electric wind, the introspection extroverted to explore human condition, intention, and manipulation in the modern world.
Blinded By Oblivion zeroes in with zero fucks on these Axis concerns, excited by sounds sourced from high water moments in the rock and roll eras: present, past and future. At times ferocious and slavering, at others, gleamingly diamond-cut, the clash of industrial steel vs. indelible nature is sonically palpable. You get it all, right out the gate: in the bright opening moments of “People,” Blinded By Oblivion ’s first cut, an induction of dreamy guitar textures from all corners set up the immortal opening couplet, “People will be the end of people
/ People will snuff the light.” Dark humor never sounded so bright! From there, the accelerated, percussive thrust that begins “Hardcore Maps” launches a sequence of quick-hitting singles, each demonstrating a melodic attunement previously only touched upon in the Axis-verse.
A constant point of Axis: is their commitment to mutation and evolution. On each new LP, a slew of heady musical inputs inform a harrowing and insistent lyric POV lit up by allegories of social estrangement and personality crisis. While earlier releases Motor Earth and Early Surf dwelt in subterranean corridors mottled with lo-fi and psychedout sonics, 2018’s Shampoo You sharpened their song-craft and fidelity, pushing vocal arrangements forward. Blinded By Oblivion accelerates this conception to new heights, thanks in part to the bold, hi-fi production courtesy of Ty Segall, who helped bring the band’s latest vision to life at his Harmonizer Studios.
That vision became hyper-focused with the sweet addition of (human) drummer Josh Johannpeter to the Axis: fold. Combined with new drum machines, the rhythms found on Blinded By Oblivion are split in sensual arrangement between organic and synthetic beats on every song. This stereo divergence opens space for Jeremy Freeze’s buoyantly
grounded bass and Brett Sova’s guitar adventures to tap the source with unprecedented contrast and brevity, while providing bedrock for their refreshingly assured vocals to gloriously harmonize.
Making for an undeniably good/bad time, streamlined and more reflexibly physical than previously known, Blinded By Oblivion begs the universe to bring back rock and roll radio. All the elements are there: compassion for our collective fallibility, rebuke on the tip of the tongue, all rolled tight with hook-laden, high-energy construction. ’Bout halfway through Blinded By Oblivion , we hear Sova say, “I think my heart is made of metal.” Yuuuup. But we’d argue there’s at least a ventricle or two made of post punk! And with vena cavae split between psych and southern boogie. And cardiac veins of glam, power pop, and punk. Sometimes the heart is simply filled with sweet melody — so man, the beats of this metallic muscle are insane! Don’t try this at home — just play it at home. And in public. Wherever! And LOUD.

Rocket Sci is a band on the move. No, really, they are! With drumming duties split between two master drummers who both play standing up and permanently mobile, they are capable of being Pied Pipers leading their audience on a literal shamanistic journey down the street. Kenny Wollesen and Dalius Naujo, the two rhythm kings in question, are rounded out in the lineup by bari/alto sax veteran Jonathon Haffner and guitarist Tony Scherr and the sound the four create is strangely hypnotic and immensely accessible, leaving the listener with infectious themes and melodies ricocheting around the brain. Creating these sounds comes naturally to these gentlemen as one glance at each of their impressive and lengthy big-name resumes will attest (Snarky Puppy, Jack DeJohnette, Tom Waits, John Zorn, Sean Lennon, Bill Frisell, Norah Jones, John Lurie, Laurie Anderson...etc). But the issue here is not glory-by-association, it's the creation of glorious music in and of itself, and Rocket Sci have an incredible head start on that. Their album "Bond Riviera," to be released by Nublu Records later this year after a sequence of pre-album singles, will be all the proof anyone needs.

There are few things in life quite as mesmerising as the ninestrong Umlaut army effervescing in fulsome force. Rebelling against labels and transcending borders of land and time. A band as in touch with the nostalgias of First -Generation postpunk or 80s pop as they are with contemporary pop or big beat dance. The Umlauts are paragons of trans-Europe excess, dripping with inarguable edge, shambling wildly from chaotic cool to bombastically exquisite order, invested with unhinging, socio-political bite, and dancing in a rave of their own.
Compiling the best of The Umlauts first two EPs - Ü (2021) and Another Fact (2022) – and appended with a clutch of new material – Slags offers the most comprehensive versioning of this Umlauts experience as yet extant on record; a salacious digest of wild experiments present and past.

Taking its title from the by-product of the smelting of metalsthe not-so-subtle cheapness in wordplay is relevant too - the music of Slags also represents a work of immense amounts of energy and heat. From their breakthrough EP Ü, aptly opening the record is the thunderous ‘Energy Plan’, defined by quote from artist Joseph Beuys and charged with post -industrial foreboding. Also plucked from that record comes the puckish splatterpunk of ‘Um Politik’, and radio ‘hit’, ‘Boiler Suits and Combat Boots’, a mission-statement satire against cultural uniformity, and perhaps the ultimate epitome of The Umlauts disco war march, stylish as fuck.
And if their first EP was in their own words, basically an ‘accident’, its follow-up Another Fact is a work of more immaculate designs. With the addition of Italo -disco influences, and of Caroline’s Magdalena McLean on violin duties, The Umlauts sound lifted towards more operatic and nuance d heights, with the tense violin bow sweeps on ‘Non è Ancora,’ and the delicious synth-popping sheen of ‘Sweat’ adding further spikes of melodrama to their sound.
Also included are three new tracks. “Dance and Go” delivers a n undulating and irresistible dance -punk drive. “Mad Blue Love” rants against relationships built on sandy grounds of false expectations, while “Prédateur’s” swaying Art-pop curiosities strings out one of the band’s most intricate arrangements to date.
Described by the band as the end of a chapter, Slags stands pregnant with rich anticipation for whatever wanderings are yet to come from this most unique of bands. For sure, it has already been a riveting ride.

In Frank Herbert’s 1973 novel Hellstrom’s Hive, the Dune writer tells of a sinister narrative surrounding the maverick scientist Nils Hellstrom, who has created subterranean Hive of 50,000 insect-human hybrid life-forms. Ultimately his plan being for the inhabitants of the Hive to usurp humanity and take over the world. The decade thus far may not have seen anything quite so daunting, but it’s provided more than its fair share of challenges. Yet in such dystopian environments, Teeth Of The Sea flourish. This band has created a kaleidoscopic inner world all its own in Hive, their sixth and most outlandish album. Fundamental to Teeth Of The Sea’s mission thus far is that this band can go anywhere and make short work of any obstacles in their path. Inspiration flowed into Hive from all dimensions, with the band ’s sphere of influence expanding to take in everything from Italo-disco to minimal techno, from dubbed-out studio madness to their most brazen forays thus far into pop songwriting. Here is a headspace where the psychic charges from records by Labradford, Nurse With Wound, Vangelis, The Knife, Nine Inch Nails and John Barry can happily co -exist. Hive is more than just a transformative force from subterranean origins. It’s an alchemical headspace where monochrome animates into vivid colour. It may not be a carefully ordered insectoid militia set to overthrow society, but it ’s a transmission which transcends anything Teeth Of The Sea have thus far offered in their time on Earth. Step inside Hive, if you dare.

Selected Songs 1997-2003 compiles some of the finest moments in the recording history of Hydroplane, the Melbourne-based indie-pop three-piece that operated alongside The Cat’s Miaow through the second half of the nineties. It’s the third release in what feels, now, like a loosely planned series by World Of Echo, documenting the music made by this group of friends in Melbourne sharehouses (The Cat’s Miaow’s Songs ’94-’98, 2022), or in the case of The Shapiros (Gone By Fall, 2023), while traversing the International Pop Underground
Hydroplane would be familiar to anyone already following these breadcrumb trails – Andrew Withycombe, Bart Cummings and Kerrie Bolton were the group’s core, all members of The Cat’s Miaow. With Cat’s Miaow drummer Cameron Smith itinerant, having moved to London, the trio used this opportunity to expand their music. It’s a subtle, but important shift. If The Cat’s Miaow was about the perfect, minimalist, two-minute pop song, Hydroplane’s music was far more open-ended, embracing the loops and drones, sampled house-y shuffle beats, the burbling of a Roland Jupiter-4 synth, all of which the trio joined, effortlessly, to their endless capacity for moving, elegant melodicism
They may have only planned to release one seven-inch single, but the sound Hydroplane created was so bewitching, so compelling, that the project’s lifespan ran for around half a decade, and they ended up releasing three albums, including a selftitled debut recently reissued by Efficient Space, and seven singles. There are all kinds of compelling things happening in the music compiled here – the hazy repetition of the gentler side of Krautrock is in here, somewhere, which also suggests Stereolab at their most intimate and disarmed; the gently drifting guitars, gauzy and oneiric, set the songs adrift and floating, each one lost in its own imagined, distracted world. Songs like “The Love You Bring” set indistinct tonal floats across dance rhythms, in a way not quite heard since My Bloody Valentine’s “Instrumental” – but with the added gift of Bolton’s gorgeous voice
This loose coalition with dance music, and the quiet experimentalism at the heart of Hydroplane, also gestures towards peers like Hood, Acetate Zero and Other People’s Children, and releases on renegade labels like Wurlitzer Jukebox and Enraptured. Like those groups and labels, The Cat’s Miaow were reconciling independent pop music’s past – sweet melody and melancholy, chiming and droning guitars – with the futures promised by DIY electronics and nascent digitalia, the interface of indie and IDM that led to some of the underground’s most blissful, texturally swoonsome music. All that is here, but also, the poise of the melodies is pure Cat’s Miaow, though, with Bolton’s voice sailing, pacifically, over some of the most pared-down, gorgeous music made during their decade
It was a time, too, when such music could make waves – “We Crossed The Atlantic”, one of their early singles, was picked up by John Peel, who played it repeatedly on his legendary radio show, the song reaching #13 on his 1997 Festive 50. That the song itself was a cover of a tune by 1960s Australian beatnik-pop-poet Pip Proud felt even more perfect – a group of outsiders paying tribute to another outsider, played on the radio one of the few broadcasters brave and human enough to take a chance on this music. But it was a time where everything was up for grabs, and genres were flowing into each other: folk songs went drone; indie re-discovered noise; ambient pop floated, again, out onto the dancefloor. And while they may have been sequestered away in Melbourne, Australia, Hydroplane felt core to that scene, a quietly driving force Compiling material from across their brief but mercurial career, this double album perfectly captures the magic and mystery of Hydroplane’s dreamlike, perfect pop songs

‘New World Artifacts’ is the debut album from Rouen, France-based group Unschooling, arriving following their 2021 ‘Random Acts of Total Control’ EP and 2019’s ‘Defensive Designs’ tape. Out October 6th via Bad Vibrations, it’s a collection of lo-fi post-punk clocking in at 30 minutes, underscored with subtle pop melodies and structures but never far away from bouts of chaotic nowave dissonance. Here, Unschooling claim loud and clear their desire to return to a sound which is less calibrated, less obvious. As they themselves write, “New World Artifacts is an ode to the unexpected, a tribute to many art rock bands who are always where you least expect them.” Already heralded as one of the most exciting up-and-comers in the new school of post-punk revivalists, having spent the last couple of years playing to busy crowds and festival fields across the continent, ‘New World Artifacts’ might just mark them out as the best in class
The Unschooling quintet, as referred to on the album’s collage artwork, is made up of Vincent Fevrier (Vocals/Guitar), Damien Tebbal (Bass), Paul Morvant (Guitar), Marc Lebreuilly (Guitar/Synth) and Thomas Fromager (Drums). Although their music might revel in discord, it is a calculated one. The musicianship is complex and meticulous, hardened by their time spent together playing on the road. For ‘New World Artifacts’, additional musicians were also brought in to expand the sound in new ways, including saxophonists Levi Gillis (The Dip, Beat Connection) and Emeline Morisset (Les Agamemnonz), and Kyleen King (Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, My Morning Jacket) on strings
