The album captures that rhythm, interwoven with sound collages from travels prayers in Essaouira, blacksmiths in Porto, street singers in Spain. It’s a time capsule of experience, a signal sent out into the void. If you’re listening, maybe it found its other half Life is a wave ride it, survive it, and remember: it’s just a dream, just the play of light on water.

Dick’s Picks Vol. 20—CAPITAL CENTRE , Landover, MD 9/25/76

ONONDAGA COUNTY WAR MEMORIAL , Syracuse, NY 9/28/76

(4-CD Set)

STREET DATE: JULY 11, 2025

At a mere two songs short of two complete shows—and those two songs, “Bertha” and “It’s All Over Now,” were played at both shows, so they appear on the set at least once—Dick’s Picks Vol. 20 is one of the more jam-packed (or is that packed with jams?) entries in the series. But this volume has a lot more going for it than just five hours-plus of music—1976 marked the return of the band to the road after a 20-month hiatus with Mickey Hart back in tow for the first time in five years, and it is a newly rejuvenated outfit we hear playing a mix of the new (“Lazy Lightnin’,” “Supplication”) and old (“St. Stephen” and the rare “Cosmic Charlie,” which appears on the Landover show’s set list for the last time ever). Perhaps the most sublime moment is the transition from “Comes a Time” to “Eyes of the World” (and then to the out-of-nowhere “Orange Tango Jam”) during the second set of the Syracuse show, but both shows are full of sparkling performances propelled by the newly reunited Rhythm Devils. Another keeper from the vaults.

GRATEFUL DEAD:

DATE: JULY 11, 2025

Though 1985 is reckoned as one of the better years for Dead tours in the ‘80s, for decades this particular Pick remained the only place to hear a show from that year. And it’s no wonder that the producers of the series selected this date; it offers an unusual song selection and strong performances throughout. “Stagger Lee,” “Comes a Time” and Dylan’s “She Belongs to Me” are all seldom-heard revivals peculiar to 1985 and receive sterling renditions, and Bob Weir’s rave-up on the rarely-performed “Gloria” caps the show in grand fashion. Collector types will also note that this show provides the only instance of “Lost Sailor” and “Saint of Circumstance” being separated from each other in a set. Disc three adds nearly 40 minutes of bonus material from a September 2, 1980 show at the Community War Memorial in Rochester, NY, and all 40 minutes are devoted to a sublime medley of “Space”/”Iko Iko”/”Morning Dew”/”Sugar Magnolia.” Late-period Dead at its

Rival Consoles has been concurrently in the foreground and background of electronic music since the late-‘00s; conjuring tense melancholia for Black Mirror soundtracks, playing in front of 10,000 dance fans at Drumsheds, selling out London’s Barbican Hall, and logging an expansive, wandering collection of synth-sculpted albums that explore a myriad of different styles and aesthetics but always with human emotion as their lodestar. Landscape from Memory, the ninth studio LP from the UK producer and musician born Ryan Lee West, finally blossomed following a frustrating fallow year away from the production desk. For West, having spent the past decade producing and writing in a habitual way, falling out of love with creativity meant a slowing of the clock that makes him tick, a sense of being swallowed whole by some elementary force.

Partly stitched together from a scrapbook of discarded audio snippets, Landscape from Memory demanded a degree of openness and vulnerability in its assembly. “There is a kind of strange beauty to it because it involves the past, present and future in a very strong way.” He set to work massaging melodic kernels into full tracks, like the skippy, haunted club shuffle of memory-jogging lead single ‘Catherine’, which is dedicated to his partner. “It’s extremely open, just like a naked melody on drums, so exposed as an idea… I think because she was so excited by it, I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, I'm excited too, actually, I just didn't realise,” he reflects.

Appropriately, the title track became the first piece of music that made West “feel an emotional reaction after a long time of having zero reaction” closing the record transcendently in a fever dream of euphoric synthwave although ‘Catherine’ can be understood as the spark that lit the fuse, bristling with energetic joy.

“I like music that has a sense of momentum, really pushing forward,” he adds of the ‘Landscape from Memory’ icebreaker. “And it just instantly has that from the first breath. So I kind of like moments like that when they appear.”

These climatic productions are characterised by their propulsive quality, and driven by West’s own push to step outside his comfort zone, having found inspiration flowing from new and unfamiliar sources. After his self-built Hackney studio suddenly felt too controlled of an environment, West altered course, mapping out tracks away from his desk. To that end, Landscape from Memory is a travelogue of creativity on the move, a collection of postcards from everywhere, and an album defined by its restlessness.

As Rival Consoles, West’s calling card is his ability to channel hope, pain, sadness, and euphoria all at once, twisting the key in the lock of his internal world and telling stories without words. Crucially, Landscape from Memory is as much about zooming in on the details as it is about seeing past the horizon. Like a saturated photograph or an abstract painting daubed with bright splotches, Landscape from Memory is a riot of colour, an album blazing with a sound-shaper’s renewed love for his craft.

Perth’s finest, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, continue their onslaught on 2025 with the release of a brand new single & announcing details of their 7th record due in May 2025. ‘Carpe Diem, Moonman’ promises to be another weird & wonderful journey through the mind of Jack McEwan, the talisman of the Perth 5piece. It’s announced alongside brand-new single ‘Weird World Awoke’, another ferocious blast of inimitable rock & roll, with a lyrical rollercoaster to keep pace with the relentless tempo & guitar slaloms. McEwan himself had this to say about the new record: “Carpe Diem, Moonman” is an entanglement of chaos, the bi-product of excessive touring, an explosion of doubt, wonder, excitement, dog bites, Greek philosophy, death, weekend benders and a partridge in a pear tree, a mongrel of sorts. There’s so many genres, flavours, cream crackers and fairground amusements packed into CDM. It blasts out the gates, takes you for a spin then leads you off into somewhere beautiful, fun and enthralling. I want people to come back and find something new with each listen.”

The debut longplayer from Washington, DC-based Ekko Astral -- Jael Holzman, Liam Hughes, and Miri Tyler -- is a complex mesh of bubblegum noise punk and no-wave art rock that holds an elastic space for the knotty, tangled horrors of living in the imperial core Their songs thrash with intense, necessary deance against codied gender-based violence, their distortion and sibilance a direct response to the dangers outside our front doors It's blistering It's frightening It's Ekko fucking Astral

pink balloons -- produced and mixed by Jeremy Snyder (DITZ, Lambrini Girls, Pure Adult) -- was widely acclaimed, garnering fawning coverage from the likes of Pitchfork (#1 Rock Album of 2024), Stereogum, The Washington Post, The Line of Best Fit, Paste Magazine, and won Ekko Astral year-end plaudits from NPR Music, Uproxx, FLOOD, and KCRW, where host Henry Rollins declared the album his favorite of the year pink balloons was also recently nominated for "Best Punk Album" for the 2025 Libera Awards

Coming back soon from Gastr del Sol on Drag City:

2025 is the new 1996! It’s not just a pipedream, we can DO THIS because: fresh from them halcyon end-of-century days of the Chicago postrok communal living hostile, we’ve got an awesome new vinyl pressing of Gastr del Sol’s Upgrade & Afterlife, just in time for its 29th anniversary. Can we just thank whatever that this isn’t another one of those tiresome even-numbered anniversaries? You could set your clock by ‘em, if you had one —but what good would it do you?

Way back when, Upgrade & Afterlife was the umpteenth release from the individual and collective forces of David Grubbs (known then for Bastro, The Red Krayola, Codeine, Squirrel Bait) and Jim O’Rourke (known for O’Rourke), whose further history has since numbered at least another umpteen or so essential listens. What is it though, wrapped up in delectable sonic amber here, that defines this Upgrade? To be sure, we hear these young men dashing through the joys of youth—their actual young youth—as well as a version captured in memory and relived with a performative touch. Time remembered as tones, with gravity gained via perceptions. The stuff of memory and sentiment as selective and potentially deceptive in their nature. Who needed ‘em?

As part of its time-traveling function, Upgrade & Afterlife is a return to roots, but not always necessarily Gastr ’s. They were more than happy to stand on branches up above other folks in order to see any next thing worth leaping for. Opening at their most incandescently impressionistic, “Our Exquisite Replica of Eternity” has no precedent in the Gastrlog, and few in most others, either. “Rebecca Sylvester” uses vocal harmonies to sharpen their singular, gamelan tone poem song form into something resembling a pop reverie at the finish. With undeniable (albeit oblique) comedy, “The Sea Incertain” comments upon Crookt, Crackt, or Fly ’s “The C in Cake,” with the presence of cracked electronics here and elsewhere taking a more forward position. The stentorian chamber piano sound introduced on “Mirror Repair” is still in full effect throughout Upgrade, but the bluesy rattling of finger style acoustic has the last word, with a tranced-out reading of John Fahey ’s version of “Dry Bones In the Valley,” weaving guitar, piano and Tony Conrad’s trademark droning violin together to close the proceedings with an ingenious, slow-acting bang.

In addition to the elder-statesman Conrad, Gastr del Sol drew upon a memorable spectrum of players for the sounds of Upgrade & Afterlife, including Anthony Burr, Steve Braack, Gene Coleman, Mats Gustafsson, Terri Kapsalis, John McEntire, Günter Müller, Jerry Ruthrauff, Ralf Wehowsky and Sue Wolf. When issued, this combination of players, parts and play—packaged in an impressively broad tip-on Stoughton gatefold sleeve emblazoned with Roman Signer ’s instantly iconic “Wasserstiefel” image—became the fastest-moving Gastr del Sol record to date. A delightful result, to our way of thinking, of the band’s ability to push at the far boundaries of their music while consolidating upon pleasure points within sounds and songs. Gastr usedthese polarities to compulsively draw the listener intimately close with sudden injections of g-force and an uncanny interpolation of space.

As we noted at the time:

“From the private chamber of a roommate come the foreign sounds of a radio. They thread through the rattling of dishwater, the preparation of yet another meal. The sounds of classical music drift faintly from the sunroom, a faraway reminder of yet another life. Through the cracks that open when a door comes ajar we can hear the contributions of all involved in this co-operative, living side by side; together, at least in parts…”

2025! Holla.

THE MYSTERY LIGHTS

The Mystery Lights return with a brand new, MC5-flavored banger "Before You Realize It". With its pummeling rhythm section, searing guitars and singer Mike Brandon's frantic, shout-sing delivery, "Before You Realize It" is a rare example of a band at peak power capturing the raw, chaotic energy of their live show onto 8-track tape. On the flip you'll find the lysergic nightmare "Cerebral Crack". A creeping, psychedelic hell-ride into the nether regions of the human psyche.

Special Limited Edition 40th Anniversary Album Release

Side B

Lit By The Fuse Moments Away Untie Ian Safer (Remix) True Love Waste Everybody’s Got To Learn Sometime

Australian indie rock royalty Ups and Downs are celebrating their 40th anniversary with the release of a special limited edition vinyl anthology entitled Stained Glass Memories

“It is incredible to think we started on this journey 40 years ago – and it’s not over yet. The band is sounding better than ever”, lead singer and songwriter Greg Atkinson said.

Formed in Brisbane in the early 1980s, Ups and Downs quickly became known for their jangly guitars, melodic hooks, soaring harmonies, and introspective lyrics, cementing their place in the hearts of indie music fans.

Ups and Downs gained attention with their breakout single "The Living Kind", which became a staple of the Australian alternative music scene, topping the independent charts. Their EP Sleepless and album Underneath the Watchful Eye showcased the band’s ability to blend heartfelt songwriting with infectious guitar-driven sounds, drawing comparisons to the likes of R.E.M. and The Church. Tracks like "In the Shadows" and "Lit by the Fuse" demonstrated their knack for crafting memorable songs that resonate with fans of thoughtful, melodic rock offering a distinctive blend of indie and post-punk.

This special vinyl compilation album, Stained Glass Memories, spans their entire career, and showcases how the band’s sound has evolved while still retaining the essential elements that made them stand out.

With song titles that read like chapter sub-heads for a post-Douglas Coupland novella, ‘The Past Is A Garden I Never Fed’ takes The Reds, Pinks and Purples central orator Glenn Donaldson through the turmoil of small talk and everyday water cooler moments with a fine sense of pathos and irony.

Set to a soundtrack that swerves between the dark days of Television Personalities and Byrdsian twang to the Jarvis Cocker-styled rhetoric and vocal tenderness of ‘Richard In the Age Of The Corporation’ with hints of everything from Husker Du’s fuzzed splendour to the chiming majesty of The Chameleons it’s an empowering listen.

The pathos and irony of the glorious track ‘The World Doesn’t Need Another Band’ sets out the band’s store, it’s a measured and quietly outspoken rant at lacklustre opposition peppered with a gorgeous guitar break. Meanwhile, ‘I Only Ever Wanted To See You Fail’ rumbles with an Eddie And The Hot Rods pre-punk riff before dissolving into a tale of self-doubt and remorse, bemoaning others’ good luck. ‘Toxic Friend’ is from the book of the TVP’s Daniel Treacey with an upbeat chorus that smacks of all that was good in old school indie in a hail of fuzzy logic and guitars.

From humble beginnings as a home recording project, The Reds, Pinks and Purples has blossomed into a sporadic live unit with tours on both sides of the Atlantic and appearances at Pitchfork Fest London and Woodsist Fest as well as support slots for indie legends such as Destroyer, Guided By Voices, and The Feelies.

• The 3 Triptych Albums from Steve Kilbey ( The Church) & Martin Kennedy (All India Radio) 2 of which have only been released in Australia and have been out of print for over a year • Includes an entire disc for each album of outtakes unreleased songs alternative mixes etc • Box has new artwork by Keith Donald who created the art for the covers of all 3 albums • Includes 12 page booklet

Strung out like a necklace of diamonds hanging in the firmament, the trilogy of albums from Steve Kilbey and Marin Kennedy (Jupiter 13’, The Strange Life of Persephone Nimbus’ and ‘Premonition K’) glitter and shine like stars. They are connected by a golden thread: a retro space aged medieval flavoured world of imagination and storytelling that stands majestic and enthralling. It is steam punk, mythology and classicism all bound together in one glorious package. Easy Action has wrapped these three gems together in a CD collection that, like the duo themselves, is greater than the constituent parts. And these three albums deserve to be homed together for posterity, each building up on the other in a world created by the lyrical creativity of Kilbey and the musical genius of Kennedy, a collaboration that feels like the product of one singular organic mind. Kilbey of course is steering the venerable institution The Church to its greatest heights with a series of phenomenal albums while Kennedy has produced magnificent solo albums, material under the labels All India Radio and Observers and with other collaborators. The result is perhaps close to a concept triptych about mysterious events with a sci-fi tone and Kilbey’s unique sense of storytelling – psychedelic musings that are spiritual, alien and euphoric

Le Volume Courbe “Planet Ping Pong” is a collection of sonic trips echoing fulgurances of beat poetry. Charlotte is a magician who can weave the directness of punk with the emotions of pop while staying in the realms of edgy experimentation. The bunny comes out of the hat smoking a cigarette and looks you in the eye. The single “Two-Love” is a collaboration with Noel Gallagher on piano and bass and Lascelles Gordon on percussions. The album also includes a cover by Daniel Johnston “Mind Contorted” which is presented as a duet with Terry Hall, and also features his son Theodore Hall and Noel Gallagher on guitars.

The originality of Charlotte’s music shares something with outsider art: naïve, primitive, primal, rather than following the standard rules. The new album self-produced and mixed by Brendan Lynch and Charlotte is no exception, It’s a unique and compelling listen laced with surprises, subversions and a refreshing candour which sets it apart from anything else.

Charlotte was born and raised in France and moved to London in 1995. She was first signed to Alan McGee Poptones label in 2001, and her debut “I killed my best friend” was released in 2005 on Honest Jon’s Records. She has also worked with a number of other bands and musicians including Kevin Shields, Mazzy Star, Noel Gallagher, The Television Personalities, Simon Raymonde, Grimm Grimm, Piano Magic etc.. Her song “Born to Lie” was featured in Series 2 of Killing Eve and Spotify selected her song “Rusty” for their “best of the decade 2010-2020” alternative compilation. Cillian Murphy selected the same song for his BBC6 compilation.

Dash the Henge

LP DTH3LP 0726436651240 2025-07-04

“One of the most compelling and complex releases of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s post-Black Ark canon, Mercy is the fruit of a long and complex working process that has yielded exceptional results. Spearheaded by the maverick artist and musical outlier Peter Harris with Fritz Catlin, the drumming co -founder of industrial funk dub act, 23 Skidoo, Mercy’s experimental sonic occupies its own space.” David Katz (People Funny Boy: The Genius of Lee “Scratch” Perry).

Dash the Henge are excited to announce the vinyl release of Mercy an innovative record featuring the legendary Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and the work of Peter Harris and Fritz Catlin. It will be preceded by vibrant visual representations of key tracks ‘Reggae Poison’,’Row Fisherman/Whale Song’ and ‘This is Hell’ created by Peter Harris and Llyr Williams. “I always saw Lee as a performance artist rather than a musician in the traditional sense, so this conceptual backing feels like a more accurate setting for his stream of conscious performance art,” Peter Harris explained. “There is an attention to Lee’s history here too, something that elevates the musical collage with the echoes informed by albums like Super Ape where earlier tracks were recorded over again. In ‘Big Fish,’ the lyrics pay homage to Bob Marley’s ‘Small Axe’ and the tune references Perry’s version of ‘Sugar Sugar,’ which he recorded with the Silvertones. Although the structure might seem chaotic, the songs were crafted over a long period of time and the approach was the same as making a painting, where foundations are worked on then painted over and over until it is full wrested.” Nathan Saoudi (founder Dash The Henge/Fat White Family) boils it down. “It’s kind of quintessential outsider music - I can’t explain what they are doing, but they have a why, and that’s enough. That’s why I needed to get involved.”

OUT 2025-07-04

A valentine for black hearts! An electric array of magic sounds! The shock return of a missing legend! The surprise formation of HOUSE Of ALL by five former members of The Fall was bound to provide some pleasant surprises, not the least of which being the creation of an identity distinct from that of any specific Fall line-up, and here the band offer an steep evolution of sound of their two previous albums . . . darker, more elliptic and can we say it? A more mystical sum of talents than most groups ever manage. They’ve kept their open door policy to former members of The Fall and expanded it. Phil Lewis, who's stepped in live for Pete Greenway, makes his studio debut, and the long-lost Karl Burns has emerged from his mystery lair to add a third set of drums to the line-up . . . besting The Glitter Band by 50%! How this will work live has yet to be determined, but the band has already scheduled dates in Spring, 2025. House Of All Souls is somewhat more psychedelic than its predecessors, and despite seven players, each with his own particular style, the songs and production are shockingly cohesive. From the breakneck pace of first tune, Tempest And Storm to the superb album closer, Born At Dawn And Dead At Sunset, there's quite a lot to unpack - it's an album-lover's album, each track magnificent in its own way and impossible for us to pick a fave from the lot of 'em. Plenty has been written about The Fall, whose 50th birthday is just a few years off, but rare is the group with an equally perverse and persuasive influence in that period. When HOUSE Of ALL debuted, Martin Bramah remarked on it being "part of the Fall family continuum" - a matter of actual fact, given the pedigree of its members. With this, HOUSE Of ALL's third full-length album, it's proven fact that the bright lights of those multiple talents behind the band have yet to dim

OVERVIEW

moisturizer is the bold, second album from Wet Leg , the Isle of Wight five-piece founded by Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers. Joined by Ellis Durand, Henry Holmes, and Joshua Mobaraki, Wet Leg has spent the past few years on the road, evolving into a feral, electrifying live force. This new record captures that energy, delivering a sound that’s tighter, bolder, and more self-assured, yet still brimming with the same quick wit and raw, unrefined energy.

Isolated in a remote house in the countryside, moisturizer was written in a creative frenzy, diving into themes of obsession and all-consuming love. While their 2022 debut earned Grammy wins and chart-topping success, moisturizer brings the bite: brash guitars, heavy beats, and a fearless devotion to feeling everything—all at once.

The Sun City Girls were unlike any band before them or that has come in their wake. Their catalog, their ethos, their *being* - you name it, with the Girls that “it” was singular and became legend. This singularity started early and extended to their release schedule and the means behind the same. While the band would prove to be wildly prolific throughout their existence, during their nascent days they quickly realized that they could not be contained by any sort of traditional label schedule. Ideas were simply coming to the trio too rapidly to even entertain the notion of being constrained by the possibility of “only” releasing at most two albums a year. To best answer the flood of ideas the name of the game was move fast, record, release and move onto the next concept. This formed the concept and ethos behind the band’s Cloaven Cassette project.

Running from 1987 through 1990, Cloaven Cassettes ultimately covered a staggering twenty-two titles. The releases themselves were as close to the textbook definition of punk as possible – hand dubbed with photocopied covers (sometimes including some crayon or marker to individual a copy) to result in something cheap and ready to sell and gigs and the sort. The recordings that spanned these cassettes was equally punk and brimming over with the signature Girls’ spirit. One title might contain lo-fi deconstructed classic rock covers, another prank phone calls interspersed with free jazz inspired improvisations. The “you never know what you are going to get” spirit that ultimately inspired (and frustrated!) so many was here and on display from an early date.

Over half of these tapes have never been reissued in any fashion or format. Between 2003 and 2009 the late, great Eclipse Records re-released ten of the Cloaven Cassettes over a series of double albums which each represented two of the tapes. Three Lobed Recordings is proud to pick up the baton sixteen years later in an effort to complete chronicling these important and crucial artifacts of the American underground. Remastered from original sources and housed in heavy Stoughton gatefold jackets featuring tons of never-before-seen archival photos, these titles are surfacing in style. Each is from a one-time run of 1000 copies.

The first of these Sun City Girls Cloaven Cassettes releases on Three Lobed pairs “Famous Asthma” (Cloaven Cassette #12, originally released in 1987) and “Tibetan Jazz 666” (Cloaven Cassette #17, originally released in 1988). The second pairs “Extra-Sensory Defection” (Cloaven Cassette #22, originally released in 1989) with “Graverobbing in the Future” (Cloaven Cassette #20, originally released in 1989). For those who have never tracked down horribly sourced mp3 rips of any of these online, get ready for a world full of explorations that immediately drip with that one-of-akind Girls sound. A welcome respite in these current days, once again the Sun City Girls are here to the rescue when we least expected them. The past is the future is now.

Rusted Root were part of the first wave of post-hippie jam bands and perhaps the most commercially successful of ‘em all, as 1994’s When I Woke, their second record and first major label release, went platinum. In fact, the band’s popularity transcends the bonds of this planet, as their hit “Send Me on My Way” was chosen as the “wake-up” music for the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity! But we Earthlings have heard that song everywhere on our own terrestrial airwaves, from sitcoms like New Girl to movies like Ice Age. Grateful Deadstyle acoustic jams, Peter Gabrielesque chants, and Graceland-like world beats infuse this music with both heady nostalgia and forwardlooking fusion; latter-day bands like The Polyphonic Spree definitely owe a debt to Rusted Root. But it’s the spiritual concerns of lead songwriter Michael Glabicki that lend When I Woke its healthy heft…this album’s got more on its mind that just having a good time (though it is all that and more!). For its long, long-awaited LP debut, we’ve had it remastered it for vinyl and pressed it up as a double-record in rust and blue sky vinyl, complete with an enclosed insert. • An Essential Piece of the Fear Factory Legacy

This 2003 record represented a real turning point for Static-X. Korn’s Jonathan Davis had tapped Wayne Static to sing “Not Meant for Me” on the Queen of the Damned soundtrack, and that uncharacteristically melodic tune moved the band in a whole new direction. In short order, they ditched erstwhile producer Ulrich Wild for Josh Abraham, who had worked with more mainstream bands like Staind and Velvet Revolver, and lost both drummer Ken Jay and guitarist Koichi Fukuda. But (thanks in part to the prodigious talents of A Perfect Circle drummer Josh Freese) out of all that turmoil came another Top 20 record, albeit one that challenged dedicated devotees of their former industrial/nu metal sound even as it found new audiences. For its first American LP release, we’ve given Shadow Zone a metallic green and gold vinyl pressing, complete with a full-color inner sleeve featuring lyrics. Remastered for vinyl by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision!

STREET DATE: JULY 11, 2025

This 2002 album was the last of L.A. band Fear Factory’s amazing run of albums for the Roadrunner Records, but it was actually the first. Huh? Let us explain—or better yet, you can read the two sets of liner notes that accompany the package. Briefly, prior to signing with Roadrunner, Fear Factory recorded an entire album in 1990 with producer Ross Robinson. The band and Robinson had a falling out, but, ironically, it was a cassette recording of that album that got them signed to Roadrunner. Once Fear Factory blew up with the release of 1995’s Demanufacture, Roadrunner acquired the rights to the album from Robinson, but waited to release it until 2002, when the band went on hiatus and left the label. But more interesting than the story behind the music is the music itself. For Fear Factory fans, Concrete is an absolute treasure trove— half of the songs are new, while the other half showed up in rerecorded form on their debut album Soul of a New Machine (and especially sharp-eared Fear Factory fans will notice bits and pieces of the new songs that showed up on subsequent albums). Above all, though, Concrete sets it in stone that very early on, Fear Factory had perfected the heavy verse-melodic chorus formula followed by so many nu-metal bands to come. For its first-ever LP release, we’ve remastered Concrete for its pressing in gun metal grey vinyl. An essential piece of the Fear Factory legacy!

Come On Come On isn’t just Mary Chapin Carpenter’s most popular album, with sales of 3 million copies. It’s also a contemporary country landmark. No less than seven of its songs became country hits: “I Feel Lucky,” “I Take My Chances,” “Not Too Much to Ask,” “The Hard Way,” “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” and two inspired covers, of Dire Straits’ “The Bug” and Lucinda Williams’ “Passionate Kisses.” More importantly, though, this 1992 release pointed the way towards what country music would become in the 21st century with its savvy seasoning of pop and soft-rock sounds into a more personal style of country songwriting from a female point of view. If you’re thinking that sounds familiar, you’re not wrong; Come On Come On’s prodigious commercial prowess isn’t the only thing this record has in common with the early work of Taylor Swift. But, it also crossed over into the rock realm in a way that, arguably, Swift’s records have not; the flourishing Americana and alt-country audiences of the early ‘90s ate this album up, and guest stars like Rosanne Cash, The Indigo Girls, and Shawn Colvin just upped its street cred. Somehow, this classic record has never (come on!) made it to vinyl; we’re making up for a whole lot of lost time with a grape vinyl pressing housed inside a color inner sleeve with lyrics. Essential!

You’ve heard Bernard “Pretty” Purdie drum on more albums than you can count. Besides releasing some 30 albums as a bandleader, and acting as Aretha Franklin’s musical director, Purdie played on records by Miles Davis, Herbie Mann, King Curtis, Tom Rush, Albert Ayler, James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Roberta Flack, Cat Stevens, Todd Rundgren, Steely Dan, Al Green…and that’s just scratching the surface! He also invented “The Purdie Shuffle,” tapping triplets against a half-time backbeat, among other rhythmic innovations. This rare record from 1972 is only the third he recorded as a leader, and, no surprise, he is surrounded by a stellar cast of musicians including guitarist Cornell Dupree, bassist Chuck Rainey, keyboardist Harold Wheeler, trumpeter Snooky Young, and reedman Seldon Powell. Needless to say, it’s a funky, eclectic affair, with plenty of great breakbeats, highlighted by the proto-rap tune “Artificialness” featuring Gil Scott-Heron! Comes in the original gatefold jacket art, too. Crate diggers gonna dig this one!

The Wildmans are a brother sister led band. The tale of this duo’s journey starts early when sister and brother Aila and Eli Wildman were at the mere ages of 5 and 7. The siblings were born and raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, a veritable hotbed of old-time, bluegrass and all ilks of mountain music. The Wildmans first started touring locally with their mom Deb on bass under the name of the Blackberries. As they entered their teens, the siblings branched out to form their own band with a host of different bandmates and Eli sharing equal time on the guitar, eventually recording their first self-titled release and performing at beloved festivals throughout the area.

As soon as they were old enough to drive they have been venturing across the country, delighting new audiences and taking home first place in band competitions at Freshgrass in North Adams, Massachusetts, and the storied Rockygrass in Lyons, Colorado, while simultaneously honing their chops at the Berklee College of Music. Along the way they have shared the stage with Billy Strings, Bela Fleck, the Steep Canyon Rangers, Oliver Wood, Sierra Hull, Molly Tuttle, Dori Freeman and many others. With their latest record, Longtime Friend, The Wildmans are showcasing their musicianship and honoring their craft while expanding and improvising on a base of traditional American roots music. This is the core of The Wildmans set and sound.

Come Live With Me represents a creative peak that sounds fresher in 2025 than it may have in 1974. The first album on his Crossover label, it lives up to the label’s name by showcasing the man’s singular ability to cross over to any audience by making songs from any time or genre undeniably his own.

Each side of Come Live With Me sets a seamless mood: Side 1 is a romantic suite of lush, latenight ballads, while a non-stop soul party is cooking on side 2. This two-sides-of-aSaturday-night concept lets Ray Charles blend modern sounds and timeless traditions in ways no other artist ever could.

Removed from the trappings and tropes of the mid-’70s music scene, and fully restored and remastered in cooperation with the Ray Charles Foundation, Come Live With Me is finally ready to be appreciated as the masterpiece it always was.

On their first new album in a decade, Anglo-Australian indiepop quartet Allo Darlin' return with Bright Nights -- marking the return of their smart, beautiful pop music, bursting with lyrics that resonate with experience and melodies that chime, echo and soar. Drawing inspiration from a mix of classic pop, folk and country, Bright Nights picks up where Allo Darlin' left off with the warmth of 2014's We Come From The Same Place, and recalls the confident and sophisticated sound of their second album, Europe.

The lilting first single "Tricky Questions" exhibits songwriter and vocalist Elizabeth Morris Innset's adept skill at taking specific experiences and creating something timeless and universally resonant. While Bright Nights isn't a country album, the timelessness of folk and country influences are woven in throughout. "My Love Will Bring You Home" might be written about Elizabeth's young daughters, but it's a mother's love song, disguised as a country love song.

Allo Darlin's songs work because, to borrow from Don Draper's Kodak Carousel pitch in Mad Men, they take us to a place where we feel loved. Emotional trust falls, they often take us to parts of ourselves we've either suppressed or have yet to discover and then are always there to catch us if and when we get there. In a changeable world, the warm embrace of Bright Nights is as needed as it is welcome.

TL;DR: Autocamper’s reflections on bedroom tiffs and hungover misdemeanors capture the jangle pop spirit of the ‘80s without the C86 revisionism. Crucial indiepop perfection!

With buckets of melancholic charm and an unerring ear for a great tune, Autocamper are the perfect pop tonic to our Age of Anxiety. “What Do You Do All Day?” is their debut album and their wide-eyed reflections on unrequited romances, bedroom tiffs and hungover misdemeanors effortlessly retrofit the jangle pop sounds of the '80s without any trace of C86 revisionism. Boisterous, lovable songs like “Again,” “Foxes” and "Proper" hearken back to the DIY roots of the early Flying Nun and Postcard label bands, groups who were as inspired by punk and post-punk as by 60s jangle and 70s AM radio pop. Fresh and utterly timeless -- not twee, not anorak, not lucky, just pop. It’s these truths that distinguish them from their peers, the hollow strains of Instagram Indie and the corporate pop that forces us to be joyful.

Artist: Sun Ra And His Outer Space Arkestra

Title: A Fireside Chat With Lucifer Lime Green Vinyl LP / CD

File Under: Jazz / Space

While the most renown track in this omniversal opus is the atomic expletive-filled repartee “Nuclear War,” there is so much more to this dark mysterious journey through the mind of Sun Ra. The sprawling, suite-like 20-minute title track sustains a lyrical edge in spite of an open framework and textures, which encourage sonorities to surface and emerge from the band as if there was no human intention behind them. In opposition to “Nuclear War,” Ra's organ playing here was built less on bombast and sonic terror than it is on whispers, stutters, shivers, and swells. Fireside Chat offers a wide stylistic array, as was the artist’s intent, reflecting his eclectic, seemingly irreconcilable approach to compositional extremes. With Sun Ra you get everything... except predictability.

Thomas Stanley, in his ambiguously titled 2014 book, The Execution of Sun Ra, observes, "Throughout his life [Sun Ra] was consistent in his opposition to war and his art reflected this, perhaps most sharply in the space chant 'Nuclear War.' 'It's a motherfucker, don't you know,' Sun Ra and trombonist Tyrone Hill [joined by June Tyson] sing over a deceptively sparkly chromatic piano line played at a steady walking rhythm. It is worth noting that this spicy chunk of language is the only use of profanity that this author is aware of in Sonny's vast recorded song repertory."

Jessica Winter’s debut My First Album is a fully realised bold, questioning album, full of personality sitting somewhere on the spectrum between therapy and the dancefloor. Musically there are shades of Kylie Minogue and the glitter of 80s Madonna, there’s the flamboyance of Prince and Queen, the energy and occasional snarl of punk and the dreamy arched eyebrow of psychedelia. In a world where maximalist pop is back and therapy memes rule supreme, My First Album is the perfect soundtrack.

Jessica Winter is a British singer, songwriter, and producer known for her experimental pop music that blends elements from various genres, including pop, industrial, and indie. To date, Jessica has released a series of EPs, including Limerence (2023), More Sad Music (2021), and Sad Music (2020), each showcasing her ability to infuse unconventional themes and introspective lyrics into pop song structures.

In addition to her solo project, Winter has an extensive list of credits as a co-writer and producer, having collaborated with artists like The Horrors, The Big Moon, Jazmin Bean, Phoebe Green, Lauren Auder, Pre Goblin, Sundara Karma, Walt Disco, and Brodka

Despite having yet to release a debut album, Jessica is already critically acclaimed, having been featured and supported by titles including GQ, Dazed, Rolling Stone US & UK, The New York Times, The Guardian, The Times, CLASH, Dork, DIY, The Forty-Five, NME, The Line of Best Fit, Gay Times, and Loud and Quiet.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Features members of Lankum and Landless

• Produced by John ‘Spud’ Murphy (Lankum, black midi, Goat Girl, Anna B Savage, caroline)

• Available on CD and black LP

Poor Creature is comprised of Ruth Clinton, Cormac MacDiarmada and John Dermody, all three are members of other bands (Landless and Lankum respectively) who have built a large following on re-interpreting songs from the past. Songs that have existed for centuries can seem immutable and anchored to time. A new generation of Irish musicians are keen to acknowledge that musical legacy, while reimagining the songs within a contemporary context.

Poor Creature’s sound – particularly in the context of contemporary Irish folk – offers something unique. There’s the gauzy, underwater, almost psychedelic seams of ‘Bury Me Not’ and ‘Adieu Lovely Erin’. ‘All Smiles Tonight’ and ‘Hicks’ Farewell’ nod to the influence of American folk/bluegrass acts like Doc Watson and the Louvin Brothers. These shifting sounds are made possible by producer John ‘Spud’ Murphy, who has produced all of Lankum’s albums, and worked with Junior Brother, ØXN, Pretty Happy, Ye Vagabonds as as well as the final two albums by The Jimmy Cake, with whom John has played for over 20 years.

“There’s something about the everyday and the fantastical, being entangled, which I think Irish music does so well.” This also sums up All Smiles Tonight, moving through stories and loss and history to create an otherworldly and timeless album for the ages.

Plunky & Oneness of Juju

MadeThroughRitual

Strut present the first international release in over 30 years by legendary Afro-jazz group Oneness Of Juju with their new album Made Through Ritual on 4th July 2025

In 1975, the late DJ / producer and jazz distributor Jimmy Gray and James “Plunky” Branch joined a musical revolution, founding Black Fire Records and releasing the label’s debut album, the classic African Rhythms by Oneness of Juju. This July, Plunky brings this important musical relationship full circle with Made Through Ritual, produced by the Plunky’s son Jamiah “Fire” Branch and Jimmy’s son Jamal Gray

The album takes a novel approach to beat culture Working from demos created by Jamal using a selection of original jazz samples, Plunky took the tracks, replayed and re-interpreted the arrangements using live musicians. “The album explores the art of deconstruction and reconstruction in music - sampling, sequencing, and live improvisation merge with multi-track recording to craft intricate harmonies and arrangements,” explains Plunky. “The process became a ritualistic expression of creativity and transformation. ”

The resulting album is a fascinating listen Opening with the meditative soul chant ‘Share This Love’ voiced by regular Oneness vocalist Charlayne “Chip” Green, the album opens out into a series of jazz vignettes including the title track, ‘In Due Time’ and ‘Free Spirit’ The powerful album closer, ‘Children Of The Drum’ celebrates black culture and legacy through the poetry of Roscoe Burnem.

Released on 1LP and 1CD with specially commissioned cover artwork by contemporary Ivorian artist Maxime Manga, Made Through Ritual represents an important new chapter in the Oneness story. The album will be supported by a selection of European tour dates during Autumn and Winter 2025

Presque Tout: Variations no. 435-514 “Baseball Season,” Pegg & Van Dyke Parks known colloquially as Presque Tout is a new extended play featuring three pieces written by Pegg’s Xander Duell and Van Dyke Parks With vocals and piano from the former and string arrangements for a quintet written by the latter, its existence is a product of a symbiotic relationship: each half improving the other, trusting the process, and reaping the rewards A towering and wonderful three-song suite as puzzling as its creators

Thirteen-minute opener “Baseball Season” will confound anyone lucky to have experienced Pegg’s self-titled album from 2024, and what Gold Flake Paint described as its “classic-NYCindie-rock heartbeat” The first movement serves as a playful dance between vocals and strings, nothing more, with the violins curling upwards at the same time Duell sings “now” during “I ain’t gonna be tarred and feathered nowwwww / That’s your job, honey!” Meanwhile, Johnson’s treatments to the mix become more pronounced, eventually giving way to an ethereal second movement, equally pastoral and post-apocalyptic Van Dyke Parks’ percussive arrangements on “Madre de Dios” blur the lines between classical and showtune, with Duell bridging the gap at “I know it feels like a big down” “No Dice” is the sole composition to have seen the light of day before on Pegg’s self-titled 2024 debut, but only its psychedelia remains on Presque Tout, greatly reimagined from soulful rocker to baroque balladry

“What we created was a new thing altogether,” says Duell “Some kind of American alchemical glam decay that means something significant but we don’t know what. All we know is we think we opened a hitherto undiscovered door” Pegg and Van Dyke Parks now invite you to walk through that door to experience Presque Tout, or almost everything

Long Tall Deb & Colin John LIGHT IT UP

In “Light It Up,” their third release, the powerhouse roots-rock vocalist from Texas and British-American guitar alchemist deliver riveting blues-rock melodies with lyrics that are pure cinema. A treasure trove of originals, there are but two covers: Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams” reimagined as a blues shuffle with Deb’s seductive growl, and the Willie Dixon-penned “Spoonful” – a not to Howlin’ Wold, an idol to Deb and Colin. Chris Butler, the mastermind behind the popular 19980’s band The Waitresses, co-produced and co-wrote many songs on the recording with Deb and Colin, and played both drums and bass on various cuts. Terry Abrahamson provided another key collaboration with “Lessons In The Ground.” Guests include: Steve Marriner, harmonica on Sponful”, Jason Edwards, drums on “Sweet Dreams”, “House On Fire” and “Out For A Rip”: Jennifer Milligan, backing vocals on “Sweet Dreams”: and Alastair Greene and Pascal Fouquet, guitar solos on “Out For A Rip,” “Light It Up” should, in the track’s words, “start a new kind of fire.”

SABINE MCCALLA - “FOLK”

FIRST TIME IN PRINT ORIGINALLY RELEASED JANUARY 18, 2018

On 2018’s “Folk”, New Orleans songwriter and singer Sabine McCalla presents her own interpretation of grass-roots southern music. Combining elements of jazz, country blues, calypso, New Orleans R&B and Haitian creole compas, Sabine spins stories of heartbreak and hope through intimate arrangements and honest inflections. Recorded by Sam Doores (the Deslondes) and Duff Thompson (Mashed Potato Records), “Folk” exposes Sabine’s love of laments and folk spirituals, her penchant for simple truths and her interest in divining fundamental wisdom about love and loss from a small tangle of words. Commanding in its simplicity, with most songs sung a capella or with minimal guitar or vocal accompaniment, the EP’s five songs tell the stories of lost souls and broken hearts, embedded with painful truths that come to us calmly, the ones that are physically and psychically impossible to ignore.

Half Japanese - Adventure

Legendary indie travelers Half Japanese return with their new album Adventure. The prolific outsider combo, helmed by the ever -optimistic Jad Fair, delivers a heartwarming set of upbeat sonnets celebrating the power of love, affection, and maturity.

More than 50 years since Jad and his brother David emerged from their lo-fi bedroom in Uniontown, Maryland, USA, Adventure takes the latest incarnation of the band down new and more refined avenues. Recorded in London at Vacant TV and produced by Jason Willett and Jad, Adventure presents a more pristine and polished canvas for Jad to expand upon. The addition of Euan Hinshelwood to the sonic palette, with saxophone, harmonica, and piano, creates a smoother backdrop for the band’s less lubricated sound.

Lemonade Sunset is an ode to the world of wonder, a spacious overture built with melancholy in mind but relishing the positivity of life. By contrast, Step On Up revolves around a glorious rising piano motif that hints at Steely Dan if they were high on energy drinks and spinach rather than their usual tipple. It’s a light-hearted evocation of the good times.

Magnificent is a homage to living in the present tense, powered by the bittersweet saxophone, with a glorious piano-led sub-melody offsetting Jad’s positivity: “magnificently magnificent,” no less. Elsewhere, ringing percussion and sharp arrangements provide Jad with a sturdy and farreaching soundtrack to lament over. Adventure sees Half Japanese covering new ground, with Jad’s considered soliloquies set in a sumptuous setting.

The lineup for Half Japanese on Adventure includes Jason Willett (bass, keyboards), Gilles-Vincent Rieder (drums, percussion), John Sluggett (guitar, piano, bass), Mick Hobbs (guitar), Euan Hinshelwood (guitar, saxophone, piano, harmonica), and Jad Fair (vocals, percussion). Sadly, longstanding member Mick Hobbs passed away last year.

School of the Flower Thicker Than a Smokey Lisboa

2005…it’s 20 years since already? We can still feel the sensuous tickle of the wind at our back during that marvelous time. It was, as the Scorps promised, a wind of change, and we were drawn to a number of likeminded birds floating in that breeze! Today, we salute Six Organs of Admittance; their School of the Flower was just the record we’d never dreamed of when we asked them if they wanted to do one with us. Turned out their pronoun of choice was "him." "He" was Ben Chasny and we’ve been happy collaborating with him ever since. Coming on the heels of records like Dark Noontide and Compathia, School of the Flower found Six Organs riding high. Having achieved much in his traditional home-recorded kingdom, he too was looking for something different. What our Ben recalls:

"It was the first time Six Organs was in a studio, so that’s cool. I wanted to play with Chris Corsano to expand on some of the rhythms in my playing, to kind of suggest some different forms for the way the folkpsych/folk music were being played at the time. The title track was inspired by John Cale and Terry Riley ’s Church of Anthrax I remember we had a big tape loop stretched around the whole studio to form the basis of that. I was taking a lot of cold medicine that week not the coolest drugs to be on, but, you know…"

School of the Flower was indeed a whole new thing containing enduring fan favorites like "All You’ve Left," "Words for Two," Ben’s revelatory take on Gary Higgins' "Thicker Than a Smokey" (pointing the way for our reissue of Red Hash later that year) and a deep vibe of spiritual folk-jazz throughout. And best of all? It was just the beginning of twenty years of sending the inspiration of Six Organs of Admittance out into the world! But today, we’re happy to send you back to School of the Flower. There’s nothing like it.
