This Issue: Jason Lekberg at Pit Records

When and where did the label begin?

Pit Records is the latest iteration of GWAR’s label arm. They have been entrepreneurial from the start and though they signed to Metal Blade for a portion in the 90s and early 2000s they have always kept ownership of a large part of their IP. In essence the label started in 1984 with the band, though it did not take its current shape until early 2000 when my company was hired.

How has the label changed since it started?

Comparing the current version to the earliest, I would say that Pit now operates at a more comprehensive level with an eye to the success of the whole catalog – digitally and physically. We also invest significant effort in a robust merchandise line. Most importantly, the current iteration is laser focused on assuring that the relationship with the fans is healthy and responsive.

How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? When I started working with the label I expected to have a much larger focus on reissuing their large catalog. In reality, GWAR and their offshoots are so active that we are only able to squeeze in a reissue here and there. I think the biggest focus shift though has been truly learning about the core fans. Though there are many, very passionate Bohabs (GWAR’s superfans) we have shifted a good amount of energy into bringing older fans “back to the fold” in recent years.

What was the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic, and is it still a challenge?

I started with Pit Records in March of 2020, and we launched this new iteration of the label with a massive reissue of their most popular album. In all honesty, the demand for that product and the average fans expendable income at the time created an expectation of scale that has shown to be a bit exaggerated. Our biggest challenge has been “leveling off” from the partially pandemic-driven success of 2020 and 2021.

How would you describe the average fan of the label? Bohabs are lifers. GWAR and the band’s various side projects are a part of their character. We have multiple fans who have built “GWARseums” of their own. The fans buy, sell and collect GWAR merch and ephemera from the past 40 years. The fans know that Pit is owned and operated by the band, and are excited to have their voices heard when we are planning upcoming releases. We are lucky to have such devoted Bohabs.

Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find (on the label or otherwise) you’d like to rave about?

I’m personally really enjoying the genre anarchy that the younger crop of heavy musicians are bringing to the table. I generally find this on social media by reading comments and watching what others

are interacting with. I’ve been in on Sleep Token since 2019 but am still raving about him. I’m loving the growth of Erra, Currents, Alpha Wolf and Bleed From Within on each of their new albums. I think Deathbyromy and her cohorts are the ones to watch at the moment.

What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?

Having Ozzy sit in Madame Tussauds wax museum and pretend to be a statue to scare people is pretty high up there. Another favorite was having a motorcade of Harleys bring Judas Priest through Times Sq. Ah, back when budgets were silly-size.

If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outsidethe-box” or “crossover” marketing campaign?

If Metallica hadn’t beaten us to it, having GWAR play Antarctica (which is where they “live” by the way). Actually, let’s go full Metalocalypse – the Moon.

What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? I love it. There’s a small plant called Cascade that is making some beautiful, hand-made runs and those are probably my favorite at the moment. Not good for high-qty stuff or for the profit margin, but they look great!

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

Streaming. I just wish we had gotten ahead of it better and had planned a more equitable monetization of it.

How do you view the issue of being environmentally sustainable within the music industry?

I think it is always important to reduce waste wherever possible. That said, human history has shown clearly that our species would rather innovate (spend) their way around issues rather than adjust their preference. As with everything, I think finding a balance of not being wasteful while also providing a product at a price that doesn’t make us bankrupt is the key.

How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?

Very. GWAR are outspoken about their beliefs – albeit often via wit and comedy. They have always addressed inequality directly. One of my favorite things to wax lyrical about after a few barley pops is the ignored effect that success and “celebrity” has on a person’s mental state. I would love to see that become something we address, along with overall mental health – and all health – in this country.

Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance:

Big shout out to Karma Records (RIP to the southside location) in Indianapolis where I spent many a Saturday and most of my allowance growing up. Out here, big love to Looney Tunes on Long Island and my boy Jay at Static Era in CT.

They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or sohow would you like the label to be remembered?

Can’t wait. I would love for it to be remembered as faithfully representing the goals of GWAR and entertaining as many Bohabs as possible.

AIRLINE HIGHWAY STREET

Full of deep empathy, sober insights, and lively guitar licks, Rodney Crowell’s new album takes its title from a seemingly mundane stretch of four-lane blacktop that runs deep into Louisiana. It’s the road he and producer Tyler Bryant drove to reach the remote studio where they recorded these songs, hauling a truckload of gear on a twoday journey that ended in swamps. Along the way Crowell looked up the route they were driving: Airline Highway. It’s the southernmost segment of Highway 61, also called the Blues Highway or the Great River Road, and it follows the Mississippi River from Minnesota down to New Orleans. Crowell is intimately familiar with this part of the country. He grew up on the east side of Houston, just a few hours west of the state line, and made wild forays into Louisiana as a young man to drink or carouse or mostly to catch live music.

Airline Highway is an album full of old, abiding loves, whether it’s a favorite song or a lover you remember fondly. Songs like “Sometime Thang” and “Rainy Days in California” (the latter featuring Lukas Nelson) raise a glass to old romances and encounters with different women in California or down in Louisiana: falling in love, toughing out hard times, growing apart until they become “that small voice on your phone,” to quote a devastating line on “Taking Flight,” cowritten with and featuring Ashley McBryde. Some are fictional, Crowell explains, but they all contain some kernel of truth.

“At a basic level there are a lot more years behind me than there are ahead of me. I’m up in my seventieth decade of my life, and I’m glad that I’m still looking forward to certain things I want to do, but a lot of what’s worth talking about is behind me.” One of the things Crowell looks forward to is making more music with musicians he genuinely loves. “I’m just in love with the experience now. I’ve worked with amazing people in the past, but I was looking too far ahead. I wanted the music we were creating to make a name for me, so I wasn’t completely present with them. My ego was involved. But now my ego seems to have finally evaporated. Now it’s just about the work and what a blessing it is to be able to do it. The work truly feeds me in the moment.”

MARSHALL CRENSHAW FROM THE HELLHOLE

8/29/25

Acclaimed singer/songwriter/record-maker Marshall Crenshaw is releasing From The Hellhole, a 14-track collection of handpicked, remixed, and remastered songs featuring tracks from a series of EPs along with several rare deep cuts. Primarily recorded in his home studio, affectionately dubbed “The Hellhole,” the collection mostly spans the last two decades (there’s one song from 1990) and will be released August 29 on Yep Roc Records and is now available for pre-order.

Produced by Crenshaw, From The Hellhole resurrects eleven of the fourteen tracks originally issued on a series of limited-edition Record Store Day vinyl EPs released between 2012 and 2016, all of which have been out of print since 2017. With rights now reverted back to Crenshaw, these recordings have been compiled for what he describes as “legacy curation”—a personal mission to properly archive and reissue work that continues to resonate. The album’s three additional tracks include a striking demo of 1991’s “Walkin’ Around,” a previously unreleased version of “I Just Want to Celebrate” (by Motown’s Rare Earth), and “Couldn’t I Just Tell You,” originally recorded for a 2022 Todd Rundgren tribute project.

Crenshaw includes several highly personal renditions of songs that shaped him—including “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” a dreamy, dub-infused homage to Karen Carpenter and the legendary Wrecking Crew. In support of the album, Crenshaw will hit the road this fall with stops throughout the Midwest and East Coast. A complete list of dates is below and tickets are available here. Of his City Winery New York show last fall Infocus Visions Music & Arts Magazine hailed, “Marshall Crenshaw live is an experience in itself. Forget the solo artist; this is a full band explosion, a funky, jazz-infused ride that showcases the magic of musical synergy. Watching them on stage is like peeking into a creative engine room. You see the interplay, the energy flowing between them, how each member feeds off the others to create that signature Marshall Crenshaw sound.”

OVERVIEW

On his second album MUTANT, Moroccan producer Guedra Guedra sculpts irresistible rhythms and sounds from his analogue synths and drum machines, blending them with percussive fragments, field recordings from Morocco, Tanzania, Guinea and more, gathered while travelling across the vast landmass.

MUTANT explores themes of identity, Pan-Africanism, Afrofuturism, and decolonization, bridging the musical heritage of the continent with elements of techno, bass music and dub. “I created something energetic, where I could find my freedom to compose,” Abdellah says. “I wanted to have a cultural sound that explored innovation with African and diasporic music alongside the vibes of rhythm and the vibes of bass.” The songs on MUTANT celebrate the wealth of African polyrhythmic forms and also challenge how this richness has long been marginalized by technological tools and systems of thought shaped by Western logic and models of standardization.

THE ONE THAT STARTED IT ALL IN 1962!

On his debut album, Dick Dale managed to capture on tape the ferocious surf sound he was creating for over-the-top audiences at the Rendezvous Ballroom. Songs like "Let's Go Trippin,'" "Miserlou Twist" and "Surf Beat" helped define the surf genre and send untold aspiring guitarists in search of their own Stratocasters and Fender Showman amps. None of them could match the intensity and directness of Dick's approach to the instrument. But at least one acolyte, young James "Jimi" Hendrix, did all right for himself in the end. Pick up Surfers' Choice and hear the sound that launched a musical genre!

This latest edition of Surfers' Choice is cut by Kevin Gray and pressed on yellow vinyl and includes complete original artwork. Listen to that surf beat!

At a mere two songs short of two complete shows—and those two songs, “Bertha” and “It’s All Over Now,” were played at both shows, so they appear on the set at least once—Dick’s Picks Vol. 20 is one of the more jam-packed (or is that packed with jams?) entries in the series. But this volume has a lot more going for it than just five hours-plus of music—1976 marked the return of the band to the road after a 20-month hiatus with Mickey Hart back in tow for the first time in five years, and it is a newly rejuvenated outfit we hear playing a mix of the new (“Lazy Lightnin’,” “Supplication”) and old (“St. Stephen” and the rare “Cosmic Charlie,” which appears on the Landover show’s set list for the last time ever). Perhaps the most sublime moment is the transition from “Comes a Time” to “Eyes of the World” (and then to the out-of-nowhere “Orange Tango Jam”) during the second set of the Syracuse show, but both shows are full of sparkling performances propelled by the newly reunited Rhythm Devils. Though 1985 is reckoned as one of the better years for Dead tours in the ‘80s, for decades this particular Pick remained the only place to hear a show from that year. And it’s no wonder that the producers of the series selected this date; it offers an unusual song selection and strong performances throughout. “Stagger Lee,” “Comes a Time” and Dylan’s “She Belongs to Me” are all seldom-heard revivals peculiar to 1985 and receive sterling renditions, and Bob Weir’s rave-up on the rarely-performed “Gloria” caps the show in grand fashion. Collector types will also note that this show provides the only instance of “Lost Sailor” and “Saint of Circumstance” being separated from each other in a set. Disc three adds nearly 40 minutes of bonus material from a September 2, 1980 show at the Community War Memorial in Rochester, NY, and all 40 minutes are devoted to a sublime medley of “Space”/”Iko Iko”/”Morning Dew”/”Sugar Magnolia.” Late-period Dead at its

VICKY TAFOYA and the Big Beat

The Queen of the Inland Empire, Vicky Tafoya and her band of soulful stalwarts, The Big Beat return with two striking sides from the bluesy side of town. Melding the conviction of Etta James and the grace of Dinah Washington, Vicky delivers "These Chains of Love" with passion and prowess. Blasting out of the speakers with its big, brassy production the arrangement is masterfully lean, allowing guitarist Matt Beld to shine. On the flip is "What a Cruel Way to Be," a gorgeous, lilting lament that scratches every itch for lovers of oldies and low rider ballads alike. Proof positive that Vicky Tafoya is a legend in her own time.

NO EXPORT TO UK, EU, AUSTRALIA, NZ MAKE PAREIDOLIA APPEAR EVERYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD

“the tendency to perceive a specific, often meaningful image in a random or ambiguous visual pattern; to see shapes or make pictures out of randomness.”

Eiko Ishibashi and Jim O’Rourke toured Europe for two weeks in 2023, a wonderful passage through France, Switzerland, Italy and Ireland; Pareidolia, the duo's fifth collaborative release, is a remix made up of resonances from those shows. The movement of sound in each performance and the relationships of sound between them; a dynamic medley of color and shape to pulse through earbuds, speaker cones and the air immediately surrounding you.

Improvisation is the preferred collaborative mode for Eiko and Jim. They both prepare separately, without discussing anything beforehand. The dialogue in the moment determines the performance; anything that takes place is a possible point of departure, allowing for a unique experience each time they play.

Related titles on Drag City:

These 2023 shows marked the first time Jim and Eiko had played together outside Japan. Perhaps the flow of parts unpacked from their respective computers was inspired by the experiences of the tour: the nature of the assembled audience, the quality of the meal on the day at hand. Additionally, Eiko played flute and they both played a bit of harmonica intermittently throughout the performances. These live acoustic signals were routed back to the hard drives, to provide further material to play with and as they traveled, recordings of the previous nights’ shows were among the materials for the next performance. With all this to play with, there was much fun to be had every night. Pareidolia’s final mix is one further rearrangement of the elements comping say, a bit of Jim from Paris against Eiko in Dublin for a minute, before bringing them both back into the same room for a spell before another set of interactions comes into play. The choices and edits represented here make yet another unique dialogue, as well as a kind of 'best' version of what they were doing on the tour.

For us at home, the sense of inevitability in the parts as they flow together might suggest structure; happily, this occurs without Eiko and Jim really committing to anything of the sort. Their available sound sources could present as a hot-wired noise onslaught, with all faders up full. Endless possible interpretations to be had on either side of the experience! This is one of several ways that the LP title and sequence of song titles come into play. Listeners hearing something more should have a good look in the mirror and perhaps consider the old saying: “Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.”

It could only help!

Oren Ambarchi / Johan Berthling / Andreas Werliin GHOSTED III

The third time’s the charm! Or perhaps the third time’s another charming excursion into the seemingly infinite universe of rhythm spontaneously created whenever guitarist Oren Ambarchi, bassist Johan Berthling, and percussionist Andreas Werliin plug in together. However you choose to look at it, several years into their collaborative endeavor, and a little more than a year on from Ghosted II, Ambarchi, Berthling and Werliin are back with a new finding, constituting fresh developments of their sound if not their album-titling ambition (in other words, if you can’t guess it’s called Ghosted III, you’re just not paying enough attention!)

In actuality, the sound of this trio has been all about new developments since they first started playing together. That’s something to be simply expected when dropping the tonearm on any of their records, which is a very nice thing. There’s also something to be said for constancy, especially when it produces such stimulating variations of tone and mood within the trio format. So, all good since there wasn’t anything broke, there was no need to fix it. Instead, just do it again. With that credo, Ambarchi, Berthling and Werliin returned to Stockholm’s Studio Rymden to continue the incredible standard of capture that distinguished both Ghosted and Ghosted II.

Although they took more studio time than ever before (three whole days!), Ghosted III ’s new development is an increased immediacy in their performances, something a little looser and wilder than than their first two albums and something, no doubt, that’s been developed by their encounters during the several dozen-plus gigs played since their debut. Thus, their ability to lock in and focus, hanging on to the smallest of details, is here enhanced by an expansive lightness of being. Such potentially polar skill sets could well make for uneven chemistry but in the hands of these three, a sparkling variety of new jams occurs. They seem to be available to try anything these days, at times playing with the exuberance of prog-rockers or new-wave popsters, alongside the eternal energies of their established styles: ambient neo-jazz, postkraut, minimal funk. In the end, their shared instinct shapes the varied emissions into structure reaching ever further into the ether giving Ghosted III a singular quality belonging only to the trio that is Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin

CROOKT, CRACKT, OR FLY GASTR DEL SOL

DC43 LP NO EXP TO EU/UK/ AUSTRALIA/NEW ZEALAND—BY HOOKT OR BY CROOKT, GET THIS ALBUM TO THE REST OF THE LISTENING WORLD!

Gastr del Sol’s second album returns at last to the vinyl format its first physical manifestation in well over a decade. Once again, a drop of the needle may ignite any number of queries, summed simply in one: What IS this music? Such is the potent energy of Crookt, Crackt, or Fly, retaining its otherworldly qualities some 32 years and countless musical movements since.

Crookt, Crackt, or Fly expands upon The Serpentine Similar ’s minimalist stance in unexpected ways, imposing further austerity in the soundscape but for an unpredictable expansive quantity periodically overflowing, waves of blood sluicing through the elevator doors. This is partially due to a change within the group dynamic: the departure of bassist Ken ‘Bundy’ Brown and the arrival of a new partner for guitarist and singer David Grubbs guitarist and sound fuckerer Jim O’Rourke

O’Rourke’s initial work with Gastr involved editing and recomposing recordings of the Grubbs- Brown-&-sometimes- John-McEntire lineup, producing an utterly outré collage of cut-ups and other types of tape processing. This became the “20 Songs Less” single, after which he was invited to play with the group. It was a time of flux; Brown recalls playing a Gastr show at the Metro around this time featuring himself, John McEntire, Grubbs and O’Rourke and one of the pieces played was a Tortoise song! Throughout these shifts, Gastr del Sol’s music was never less than fully considered and composed, even in moments redolent with the suggestion of the random and the non-sequitur.

Grubbs and O’Rourke made no attempt to replicate Serpentine’s arrangement of thick, scaly drones and hypnotic song-visions in their own partnership, finding Crookt, Crackt,’s sound instead in spiny, gamelan-like interactions between their (mostly acoustic) guitars, played precisely in and out of formation with bright, fleet-fingered abandon. O’Rourke’s fondness for field recordings and his capacity for tape manipulation intersected with Grubbs’ sensibilities, edifying his evolving song style: written with increased sharpness and sly surreal humor, sung closer to silence.

Halfway into “Work from Smoke”, the sudden collapse of the sound-walls around us signals Crookt, Crackt ‘s major departure. From the thicket of guitars, a swell of drones and free-jazz squeals, made up of bass clarinet, vibraphone and organ, pulls the listener into an entirely other acoustic space. “Every Five Miles” derails in similarly tactile fashion: a guitar duet boils up thunderously, then fragments and spirals apart. As a free electric guitar part crops up, improbably holding the center, the acoustic space around it continues to disintegrate in ambient stereo. A wedding of folk music idioms to classical, improvised and modern compositional modes (including Gastr ’s own formative post-punk mode), Crookt, Crackt, or Fly is a song-based reality steadily giving way to its alternative alchemies playing out within.

Recorded with Brian Paulson at King Size Sound Labs and several other spaces in late ‘93, Crookt, Crackt or Fly is a stimulating 45-minute listening experience, crystallizing the first phase of Grubbs' and O'Rourke's collaboration, while promising, “Just wait ‘til the next one!”

Serpentine Orbit Even the Odd Orbit

Back from the undead in the fresh (because we believe in upgrades & afterlifes!) is this new pressing of the first of all Gastr del Sol records, The Serpentine Similar. It is one of several distinct initiators of a definitive musical drift in the 1990s, and a drift all of its own, to boot! At the time, this album was largely heard within an underground whose boundaries were clearly defined but if today’s sound-pool of “commercial” music is deeper and wider than it was back then, it is without a doubt due to the cracking open of certain doors of perception by Gastr del Sol, alongside their esteemed others.

The year was 1992. After a bruising run of tour dates the year before, the final lineup of Bastro a power-trio of David Grubbs, Ken (Bundy) Brown and John McEntire retired, exhausted. Shortly thereafter, they were rebirthed, sans drums, via a new set of ideas composed in the cutdown configuration of Grubbs on guitars, keyboards and vocals and Brown on bass. Playing in duo format opened up sound and intention, leaving the need for speed (and the stock in rock) out, while letting in an expanse of brooding, droning acoustic space that highlighted the songs’ serpentine shapes. This was something so radically different as to require a new calling card: henceforth, Gastr del Sol.

Signing to Teen Beat, Gastr del Sol completed The Serpentine Similar in late 1992 for release the following year (the DC reissue came in ‘97 ). In the final rendering, Serpentine’s roof-rent, white-sky execution was attenuated with several percussion appearances from the prodigal John McEntire. Over the next five years, his cameo presence was a constant in Gastr del Sol’s steadily-evolving tradition of significant breaks from tradition at every turn. There would be an even more significant tradition-breaker onboard for all this; following the release of The Serpentine Similar, Jim O’Rourke joined Grubbs in Gastr as Brown exited (to focus on Tortoise, with McEntire et al). For the new Gastr duo, a world of new directions in music awaited, the future became the past, and the music of Gastr del Sol emerged from the thin air, then returned there. Now, The Serpentine Similar has been returned to vinyl from the temporal streams of contemporary music listening, a glorious rematerializing of all its spatial details on LP for the first time in 20 years.

Owls RareBirds

Owls, the inverted string quartet hailed as a “dream group” by The New York Times, and whose original, visceral, and personal performances defy categorization, announce their debut album, Rare Birds (out on March 14, 2025), via New Amsterdam Records Owls’s all star lineup is comprised of world renowned soloists, as well as current and former members of yMusic, Aizuri Quartet, and Kronos Quartet: Alexi Kenney (violin), Ayane Kozasa (viola), Gabriel Cabezas (cello), and Paul Wiancko (cello). The album was produced by Grammy™-winner William Brittelle.

Rare Birds offers a new take on a seemingly familiar form, inverting the string quartet with two cellos instead of two violins, while incorporating a playful approach to repertoire curation. Existing as something between a live concert, a playlist, and an album of creative premieres, reinterpretations, and William Brittelle’s outsidethe-box production, Rare Birds offers music imbued with creative energy in multiple directions. Vibrant double cellos build foundations for violin and viola to soar over, interwoven string parts flow through baroque harmonies, driving rhythms invite the listener to dance, and delicate textures transform into moments of rapturous joy. Owls’s unique instrumentation affords the ensemble the freedom to explore musical possibilities without the constraints of a traditional canon, resulting in an album that is as sonically distinctive as it is heartfelt

Wavers is a huge-hearted, melodic, indie rock band influenced by D.IY. punk, beloved friends, changing seasons, and a world in decline. Jake writes complex melodic lead bass guitar, Charlie adds skillful drumming and soaring harmonies, Josh’s guitar detonates controlled explosions all over the place, and Rosie’s vocals and indie pop compositions provide the warm, humanist center. The songs on their debut LP “Look What I Found” explore beloved friends and lovers, environments built and natural, seasonality, listening to music in cars, jumping in always-changing rivers etc. Some folks say they sound like one-off self-released 7”s from 1995. This is raw indie-rock for punk kids with Discount, rather than Discharge, back patches.

Wavers began in summer 2021 when Jake, Josh and Charlie wrote and demoed five songs and sent them to new friend Rosie, who wrote vocals and lyrics within the week. Those tracks became their self-titled EP, released by Musical Fanzine in summer 2024. After three years of regularly practicing and numerous gigs in and around their hometown of Olympia, WA, they recorded “Look What I Found” in fall 2024 with Olympia legend Capt. Tripps Ballsington at High Command, whose credits include Broken Water, Milk Music, Gun Outfit, Physique, Pigeon Pit (whose Reach Aound Records is co-releasing “Look What I Found”.)

American composer Kory Reeder’s 10th album In Place returns to the Grid Series heard on 2 of the 4 tracks from Reeder’s debut release on Edition Wandelweiser Records Love Songs/Duets. With raw recordings of three works from the midphase of this Series of 45 works, In Place is the first release exclusively containing pieces from the Grid Series and features Reeder on piano with long-time collaborators Kathleen Crabtree and Michael Moore on violas

Each track is a space to dwell, on the edge of silence, on the edge of collapse, and in a kaleidoscope of tones repeating again and again, cycling around each other in a freedom of movement motivated by the poetic prosescoring of each piece.

The three compositions featured on In Place embody Reeder's distinctive approach to music-making, where structure and spontaneity coexist within a framework that emphasizes performer agency and introspection. Each piece, while unique in its construction and intent, contributes to a cohesive sonic environment that invites both performers and listeners into a shared space of contemplation. By prioritizing the performers' interpretative choices and the listeners' engagement, In Place transcends traditional musical narratives, offering instead a space for reflection and connection by the musical choices of three friends.

BIG THIEF Double Infinity

It was winter in Manhattan. The streets were frozen and still the band rode bicycles to the Power Station on 53rd and back to Brooklyn for three weeks. Three weeks that would mark the birth of Double Infinity - the album that constitutes a grand departure for Big Thief. An ultramodern community of musicians gathered in the warm wooden room where Bruce once stood. They all tracked together – simultaneously – improvising arrangements and making collective discoveries.

Laraaji created drones with zither and an iPad and sang intuitive vocal melodies. Joshua Crumbly played bass; Mikey Buishas made live tape loops and played keys; Mikel Patrick Avery, Jon Nellen, and Caleb Michel played percussion; Adam Brisbin played guitar; and Hannah Cohen, Alena Spanger and June McDoom sang background vocals. Along with core members Adrianne, Buck, and James, the group played for nine hours a day. Double Infinity is the archive of this play. It could only have been produced, engineered, and mixed by longtime Big Thief collaborator Dom Monks.

“Double Infinity,” reaches into the idea of inner and outer worlds, and the body as the bridge. It speaks to the purgatory created by the human brain, always looking to the past or future, between the things we’ve lost and the things we want, between desire and regret. “Beauty speak to me, let me know you, let me see myself inside your mystery, through the crystal cage of aging.” It calls for true beauty to speak, not fabricated, conditioned ideas of beauty. At the bridge between “what is forming” and “what is fading”, between “losing and of gaining”, “mourning and celebrating”, perhaps there is solace in “the eye behind the essence, still, unmovable”, that which is “unchanging”, outside of time. Is it love?

DAVID BYRNE

Who Is The Sky?

In 2023, as his triumphant American Utopia era came to a close, David Byrne began jotting down the occasional groove, chord or melody and assembling them into demos he recorded with just an acoustic guitar atop a programmed beat or loop. The prior three years had given him, and much of humanity, the opportunity to ask, “Do I like what I’m doing? Why am I writing songs, or working this job, or whatever? Does any of it matter?”

Byrne’s attempts to answer those weighty questions can be found on Who Is The Sky?, a first-time collaboration between himself, Grammy-winning producer Kid Harpoon aka Tom Hull (Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus) and New Yorkbased chamber ensemble Ghost Train Orchestra, and featuring guest appearances by Paramore’s Hayley Williams, longtime collaborator St. Vincent and The Smile drummer Tom Skinner. The album builds upon the optimistic themes laid out by American Utopia and its supporting tour, but more specifically spelled out by the Grammy-winning Broadway show and subsequent movie. With this offering, Byrne continues his lifelong exploration of human connection and the potential for societal unity against the chaotic backdrop of the world. Who Is the Sky? is particularly personal, cinematic, humorous and joyful, but often with a lesson baked in – that love is unexplainable, that enlightenment means very different things to different people and that it’s always a good idea to moisturize, whether you wake up the next morning with skin like a baby or not. Most importantly, the songs evince Byrne’s gift for riding the razor’s edge of avant-garde and accessible pop.

OVERVIEW

Joy In Repetition covers Hot Chip's work, from their landmark EMI/DFA debut, The Warning, and traces their artistic evolution up to the present day. Alongside new track "Devotion," the comp is packed with stone-cold bangers from across their career: "Ready For The Floor,” “I Feel Better,” and “Flutes,” to name a few. "Devotion" sees the band in full voice, merging pop hooks with their unique dancefloor mentality. Joy In Repetition highlights the consistency of their stellar career so far and cements their status as one of the most important British groups in the last two decades. To complement this, the album comes housed in a cover designed by legendary British pop artist Peter Blake, mastermind behind the iconic Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band artwork, and features a little monkey with a miniature cymbal (a little nod to "Over and Over").

The Joy In Repetition really is in you.

AFRICAN, BOOGIE, JAZZ FUNK NIGERIA

First time reissue of a mythical 1980 afro soul masterpiece, recorded in Louisiana and released in Nigeria.

OVERVIEW:

Mythical soul/boogie record recorded in Louisiana by Nigerian multi instrumentalist Rick Asikpo when he was studying in Houston

Rick Asikpo started his musical career while studying in Houston, joining local Black Artist collective The People’s Workshop, before returning to Nigeria and releasing a run of successful albums throughout the 80s.

“Got To Be Me” was recorded at River City Studio in Baton Rouge in 1981 but was only released back in Nigeria and sold little at the time, with original copies vanishingly hard to find

Layers of synths wash over drawn out, Earth, Wind and Fire inspired grooves, moving from the uptempo “Disco Life” and “Jam” to the languid boogie and two step soul of “Love” and Donny Hathaway-esque “Let’s Get High” The album is shot through a Texan/Nigerian filter that stands as a missing link between the dancefloor experiments of Houston and Lagos

As featured on Soundway’s seminal “Doing It In Lagos” compilation.

Close Up The Honky Tonks

The first project in this exciting new series, Red Hot & Ra - Nuclear War LP, is an album of political and social commentary, stemming from the incomparable Sun Ra track “Nuclear War”. Sun Ra's 1982 track "Nuclear War" is an intense and potent call to action against the use of nuclear weapons and the potential for their use to inflict global destruction. The track is a stark reminder of the consequences of human carelessness and ignorance and the potential for our own demise. Originally written in response to the Three Miles Island incident in Pennsylvania in 1979, close to where The Arkestra was living at the time, in Philadelphia. The song may have been written in reaction to a very specific incident, but its relevance only grows.

Goodbye Comes Hard For Me

Red Hot + Ra: Nuclear War LP features 4 separate versions / interpolations of the Sun Ra single "Nuclear War” by Georgia Anne Muldrow, Irreversible Entanglements, Angel Bat Dawid, and Malcolm Jiyane Tree-O. The album paints a vivid picture of the struggle and resistance in the face of nuclear war, touching on themes of racial injustice, environmental destruction, and the power of love in the face of disaster. The opening track, Nuke’s Blues by Georgia Anne Muldrow, features Josef Leimberg and paints a bleak, but hopeful picture of the struggles of war. Irreversible Entanglements’ Nuclear War is a nearly 19-minute long sonic exploration of the power of collective resistance. The following three tracks, all produced by Angel Bat Dawid, explore the complex emotions that come with facing a nuclear disaster, from fear and sadness to love and redemption. The final track, produced by Malcolm Jiyane Tree-O, features Grandmaster CAP, and is an urgent call to action. Overall, Red Hot & Ra –Nuclear War is an emotionally powerful and thought-provoking album, offering an artistic response to the evergrowing threat of nuclear war.

Red Hot & Country is a Grammy nominated compilation from the Red Hot Organization released on CD in 1994. Red Hot's raise awareness and money to fight AIDS/HIV as well as other related health and social issues. The record features Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Brooks & Dunn, Wilco, Billy Ray Cyrus, Carl Perkins, Nanci Griffith and more. This is the first time ever the release will be released on vinyl and has been remastered in 2024.

MECHATOK WIDE AWAKE

STREET DATE: 09/5/2025

Anyone familiar with electronic music will know Mechatok, aka Emir Timur Tokdemir. He made his name touring globally and releasing a series of records and collaborations with some of the most forwardthinking artists of the past decade, from Drain Gang (Bladee, Ecco2k, Whitearmor, Thaiboy Digital) to Charli XCX to Lorenzo Senni. Often subtle in delivery, these works circulated widely across underground and adjacent mainstream scenes, subtly shaping the direction of experimental pop and club music. Tokdemir treats Mechatok as a kind of fictionalization experiment—an avatar that allows him to explore new facets of himself and brings a sense of openness and freedom to the creative process. He cites artists like Daft Punk and Gorillaz as inspirations: timeless figures who turned the concept of the artistic project itself into an artwork. After years of honing his sound as Mechatok, Tokdemir is stepping up to share Wide Awake, his kaleidoscopic debut solo album. The record crystallizes a journey that is entirely his own, establishing Mechatok not just as a standout collaborator, but as an undeniable solo artist fully in command of his vision. Through the Mechatok persona, he accesses forms of expression that feel paradoxically more intimate - and more timeless. Everything on Wide Awake is tied together by a playful yet deeply intuitive sonic palette and a set of core, haiku-like lyrical themes. The album poses questions about the possibility of authenticity and the status of selfexpression in the context of algorithmic flattening. Mechatok declines to propose utopian solutions and chooses instead to live with strange ambiguities, tapping their generative potential. Featuring Bladee, Ecco2k, Isabella Lovestory, Tohji, and others, Wide Awake spans a wide emotional and stylistic spectrum while remaining filtered through Tokdemir’s precise vision. The result shines as a meticulously crafted electronic pop opus; a collection of addictive, personal mantras, fragments that feel at once fleeting and enduring

THE FALL Seminal Live

“Part musical hypnotist, part ranting madman, Smith was a singular figure in post-punk. His Mancunian accent, dry witticisms and plays on words were one of the Fall’s most constant characteristics. Their songs were odysseys into his ever-verbose psyche, marked by repetitive rhythms and melodies.”

“Mark E Smith’s group of psychedelic post-punks rank as one of the most visionary, singular British bands of all time.”

– THE GUARDIAN

Beggars Arkive is happy to announce our reissue of The Fall’s 1989 half-studio/half-live album, Seminal Live. Available on yellow vinyl and digitally, the album has been newly remastered by Kevin Vanbergen. This edition features reimagined artwork, new sleeve notes and a QR code linking to exclusive bonus assets.

Released by Beggars Banquet in June 1989, Seminal Live was the first of many live/semi-live/pseudo-live albums across The Fall’s catalog. Its release, at the tail end of the prolific Beggars Banquet era (1984-1989), resulted in it being unfairly regarded as a contractual obligation album. The albums that preceded it are classics, considered pillars of the band’s excessive catalog.

The studio recordings on Seminal Live were all new songs and make up the first side of the album. The live recordings on side two, meanwhile, are all versions of previously-released tracks. Some of the songs on Seminal Live are amongst the best Fall songs of all time. Side one contains “Dead Beat Descendant”, and their cover of Lonnie Irving’s “Pinball Machine” is in the well-worn tradition of The Fall’s country covers.

The live side shows more signs of the collage-like nature of the LP. Not going the route of a single hot set, live tracks were drawn from shows in Vienna or Manchester mostly from 1988. Recording quality is mostly even and like with all Fall live material, there is much to unpack for the true head. This was undoubtedly one of the strongest line-ups of the band ever, and you can absolutely hear it.

The Fall’s legendary and notorious frontman Mark E. Smith passed away in 2018 at the age of 60 and left us with a massive output. The amount of Fall releases (and band members) was prolific to say the least. The foundation of their unique sound is a near-cacophonous, amelodic jagged jumble of guitars, sing-speak vocals and keyboards which has had an enormous influence on the indie/alternative scene.

Mal Waldron

CandyGirl

An electrified meeting of minds, Candy Girl is a lost 1975 session by jazz pianist Mal Waldron, recorded in Paris with core members of the mighty Lafayette Afro Rock Band, the American funk unit who had made France their home and whose deep grooves would later be mined by generations of hip-hop producers.

By 1975, Waldron was a decade into his self-imposed exile from the United States a transformed musician who had reassembled his sound in Europe and Japan after a devastating breakdown in the early '60s His post-1969 output had stripped jazz down to its core elements: modal intensity, locked grooves, and hypnotic repetition Candy Girl doesn’t interrupt this trajectory it extends it, wrapping Waldron’s minimalist mantras around the funked-up chassis of the Lafayette rhythm section

Originally released in microscopic quantities on the Calumet label and long shrouded in obscurity, Candy Girl was recorded spontaneously in the studio of French producer Pierre Jaubert, whose Paris HQ had become the workshop for both avant-garde jazz (Archie Shepp, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Steve Lacy) and psychedelic funk (Lafayette Afro Rock Band AKA Ice). This session finds Waldron jamming freely with bassist Lafayette Hudson, drummer Donny Donable, and keyboardist Frank Abel on clavinet, Moog and more laying down raw, unfiltered instrumental funk with an experimental edge.

Highlights include the low-slung vamp of “Home Again”, the crisp, break-laden groove of “Red Match Box”, and the mesmeric swirl of the title track “Candy Girl” a minor-key electric piano waltz with hints of cosmic soul There's even a deep cut for the crate diggers: the somber yet meditative “Dedication to Brahms”, where Waldron deconstructs the Romantic composer’s third symphony into a sparse jazz reverie

Unlike his polished sessions for Japanese labels or the avant-garde swing of his earlier Prestige work, Candy Girl feels more spontaneous, even accidental and that’s part of its power. It’s a document of Waldron as bandleader, collaborator, and explorer, captured in the midst of a vibrant, cross-cultural scene in mid-70s Paris. Never officially issued with a cover and barely released at all, Candy Girl is a rare convergence of two underground traditions: Waldron’s Euro-exile electric jazz and the raw, sampled-future funk of the Lafayette Afro Rock Band. Now finally resurfaced, it deserves its rightful place in both stories

This official edition features audio remastered by The Carvery, new liner notes by Francis Gooding, and packaging that pays tribute to the obscure original release, complete with replica Calumet label artwork For years it lived in the shadows; now Candy Girl finally steps into the light a vital rediscovery from one of jazz’s most distinctive voices

CHOROPHOBIA

Release Date: September 5, 2025

WEVALTO RELEASE THEIR NEWALBUM ‘CHOROPHOBIA’ OUT 5TH SEPTEMBER ON NINJATUNE IMPRINT TECHNICOLOUR

When it came to making their fourth album, ‘CHOROPHOBIA’, Weval faced their fears. Despite being grouped into the dance scene since their 2013-released debut EP ‘Half Age’ and going on to play festival stages including Nuits Sonores, Lowlands, Primavera, Best Kept Secret, Pukkelpop and DGTL Amsterdam with their five-piece band, Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers have actively pushed away from being known as a floor-filling act. But, more recently, when the pair stumbled across the phrase chorophobia - which means a fear of dancing - they decided to lean into the irony and get out of their comfort zones.

‘CHOROPHOBIA’ features an unrestricted, genre-crossing ethos made room for guilty pleasures, higher BPMs, big drops and an increased number of hi-hats. The titular intro sets the scene and is ominous enough to soundtrack a 70s horror movie, before acid synths take it in a wiggier direction, flowing seamlessly into the spiralling build up of ‘MOVEMENT’. Comparatively, ‘JUST FRIENDS’ would suit a Tame Impala record perfectly, and the funk-infused ‘BETTER’ sits in a similar sphere to records from the Motown era. Featuring vocals from club favourite KILIMANJARO’s brother who spontaneously joined a studio visit, ‘HEAD FIRST’ups the ante, as does ‘DOPAMINE’, while the subtler ‘MERCATOR’ forms a bridge between Weval’s previous releases and this record.

Mansur Brown shares his truest, most honest album to date. Rihla is the Arabic word for a journey but can also refer to writings about that journey. Embarking on this voyage, you’re hearing an artist in full flow – bucking trends and freely making music that isn’t confined by genre. This new chapter sees Mansur introduce his vocals for the first time, alongside a heavier rock & electronic undercurrent, whilst maintaining the melodic essence you’d expect from Mansur. There are echoes of r&b, and sci-fi-esque synthesisers that beam vivid imagery. Guitar remains at the centre of Mansur’s music, but it’s by no means the only component. Straddling the roles of songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, this spirit of self-sufficiency cuts through everything Mansur does. Previous collaborations include Yussef Dayes, Joy Orbison, and Little Simz.

JALEN NGONDA

Soul singer supreme, Jalen Ngonda and producer/veteran keyboardist, Victor Axelrod join forces to deliver the collaboration we all needed–the impossibly soulful, reggae banger "All About Me". Having worked together on the sessions for Come Around and Love Me, Axelrod recalls being inspired by the similarities between Jalen's voice and a young Bitty Mcclean. He had the beds to a track already recorded, but needed the right singer. With Jalen on board, the two wrote the lyrics and recorded the vocals in one night. Written from the perspective of an arrogant lover, the track's party-forward swing and stellar vocal performance make for a pop-forward gem poised to be massive on both the soul and reggae scenes.

: Jayda G (Colour Vinyl Re-issue)

In celebration of !K7's 40th anniversary year, Jayda G’s seminal DJ-Kicks is re-issued on a beautiful gold 2LP with a brand new Jayda G DJ-Kicks playing card.

Jayda G's mix takes you on a journey that moves through loved classics and new bubblers This includes original productions from HAAi, DJ BORING, LNS and Australiabased friend Jennifer Loveless – whose track ‘in 10000 places (then what)’ swells with trance euphoria – as well as appearances from ‘Both of Us/Are You Down’ collaborator Fred Again, DJ Koze and FIT Siegel.

Each selection, Guy explains, is attached to a memory – whether it’s starting her career in Vancouver’s nascent electronic scene, her time DJing in Berlin or reconnecting with friends from home. “I really wanted to involve friends who I've had shared experiences with. The people included are people I've shared trips with, had late night DJ sessions with or made music with They’ve been really formative in my artistry.”

As a result, her DJ-Kicks album is an exercise in connection; a look to the past and the future, the good times and bad “This mix is full of nostalgia; music is nostalgia for me It’s happy and sad at the same time,” she says “A friend and I were looking at old pictures from when we used to throw underground parties in Vancouver and you have that feeling of like, ‘Wow, it's changed And there's a sadness to that, but an awesomeness to it as well. At least we get to look back at these times and feel like yes, we lived.”

Ultimately, that’s what draws you into the mix. It’s a much-needed shot of enthusiasm, yet acknowledges the converging feeling of melancholy of our troubled times. Listening to the mix evokes a feeling of familiarity, like revisiting memories on dancefloors past or texts of encouragement from an old friend. A testament to positivity, a work that chooses joy The message is simple: “I’m an optimist I want people to think, ‘We're listening to good music and brighter times are ahead.’”

Population II

MAINTENANT JAMAIS

A crisp, spellbinding intro sets the mood for the first song on Maintenant Jamais , Population II's third album. With the guidance of producer Dominic Vanchesteing (Marie Davidson, Chocolat), the turbulence of the band’s previous releases is structured and refined.

The result is a sophisticated rock album that surprises with its languorous grooves, as heard on Le thé est prêt , while staying true to the raw power for which the band is renowned, as demonstrated on vigorous tracks such as La Trippance and Rédemption naturelle.

PRESS QUOTES:

“Population II tick all the boxes for a proper prog-rock act. 7.6 / 10” -Pitchfork

“[...] a real trip.” -Brooklyn Vegan

“A cerebral blast of experimental rock that explores prog, psych, Krautrock, punk, and art-rock styles with groovy intensity and explosive creativity.”

-KEXP

09/26: Baton Rouge, LA - Chelsea's Live

09/27: Houston, TX - Dan Electro's

09/28: Austin, TX - Levitation Festival

The album follows with Prévisions a song that ripples with finesse before abruptly transitioning into the instrumental number Macavélique rock . While Haut-fond and Cardinaux are true feats of elegant prog rock, Mariano (Jamais je ne t'oublierai) and homme étoilé prove that Population II is also endowed with a profound melodic sensibility capable of creating catchy and explosive hooks.

On this new album, the trio fine-tunes the distinctive style they’ve been developing for several years, thanks in part to a fusion of shared influences – from Soft Machine to MC5 to L'Infonie – but also to a rare complicity that can only blossom between such close friends. This creative chemistry is what makes the band's complex songwriting seem so fluid and supple. Population II breaks through their previous sonic frontiers while remaining true to their roots. Therein lies the achievement of Maintenant Jamais.

The Land of Dreams: proverbial hopes and aspirations; yet also the nether realm of nightmares, fantasies, and subconscious voyages. Which dreams? A title oft-thrust onto the New World, but whose land? Perhaps more apt to Chew: whose America(na)?

Driving opener “Dying On Borrowed Time” seems inspired by both Ajahn Chah’s “In the Dead of Night…” and a mysterious guest; hot-wired hybrid of post-Trafficera Dave Mason, ’70s Tulsa sound, 12-string Eastern melodies and propulsive bass guitar.

The Faulkernian menace of “The Peddler’s Cart” drags patricidal-Gothic through fallow cotton fields; Daly’s mandolin cutting peals of Bill Monroe-like energy; murder-ballad revenge via Fairport Convention, Waylon Jennings, and The Bad Seeds.

Invoked from the same greasy-yet-ethereal grimoire of Leon Russell piano magick (that Chew regularly casts), “She’s a Seer” recalls Russell’s work with Delaney & Bonnie; snatches of 1975-era Led Zeppelin in Daly’s pedal steel-like swells and stinging outro solo, conjuring LZ’s opus "Swan Song”; Brown’s bass splits The Meters and T. Rex.

“Land of Dreams” is a fantastical nonlinear U.S. historical travelogue: a flag is planted on the moon; Adam Smith’s hand creeps westward doling poxed blankets to native peoples; the internet foists its mirror in our faces; Mississippi riverboats slouch towards New Orleans. “Something’s coming in the Land of Dreams”, indeed. Barrel-house piano, electric slide and frantic bass smack out a frenzied crescendo in a midway Hall of Mirrors, all fading into Nod.

“Theatre of Dionysus” finds Chew in a Roman fever dream à la P.K. Dick’s VALIS: “they’ll eat out your liver again and it regrows.” Shuford’s bouzouki flourishes punctuate the lyrical breaks, his electrified take during the outro providing arguably the most beautiful texture of the album.

Sacred Money

CONG JOSIE & GARRY SACRED

STREET

DATE September 5th 2025

O the back of his 2024 EBM meets rockabilly greaser album Moto Zone. Cong Josie returns with a new partner in crime On this new EP Sacred Money, Cong teams up with the legendary Garry Gray, or should I say, Garry Sacred of the seminal Aussie swamp-rock outfit Sacred Cowboys. The two met in early 2025 when Cong fessed up to ripping o the Cowboys’ track ‘Nothing Grows in Texas’ on ‘1300 Scorpio’, the two recognise a kindred spirit, they bonded over their love for Alan Vega and 70’s oz-boogie and next thing you know, we’ve got this scorchin’ EP

The record kicks o with a re-recording mash-up of the aforementioned ‘1300 Scorpio’ & ‘Nothing Grows in Texas’ in ‘1300 Texico’. The call and response vocals and generation time-travelling adds a deeper narrative and allegory for our bizarre times, as we watch capitalism in its death-throes Like leather clad twins mysteriously separated by a decade or two, there is an undeniable synchronicity and something very ‘now’ at play here If you know these two musicians, you can just imagine the burning heat produced when you hear them together. It feels right, it feels inevitable. What follows just gets better

Sacred Money is a bold work conjuring the dread power and unrelenting pull of money-seduction that aects as all Next is a triplet of on-theme cover versions starting with what was the lead single from the record, a sleazy and sinister cover of the cannonic Oz-boogie-era song, ‘I’ll Be Gone’ (originally by Spectrum 1971) Side two smacks you straight in the face with a blood pumpin’ rendition of Suicide’s ‘Fast Money Music’ followed by a deep cut from The Kinks underrated 1974 concept record Preservation Act 2 : ‘Money Talks’ The record closes with the title track ‘Sacred Money’ a tripped out ode to/ lament for/ rail against, you guessed it money

Strap in for a one of a kind modern classic of uncompromising punk vision calling for action while demonstrating the heart and the power of community and creativity. Rise up, rob a bank and pull out those leathers, this one’s a two punch banger

Exalge

An improvised debut between modular synthesizer and viola, channeling noise, texture, and cinematic resonance.

Exalge is a live, fully improvised recording by New York City-based modular synthesist Matthew Ryals and Milan-based violist Federica Furlani aka effe effe Capturing the raw electricity of a first-time meeting, the album documents a spontaneous collaboration sparked when the two artists shared a bill at Exalge, a cultural center in Milan, Italy

Marked by Ryals’ distinctive “acoustic” palette, crafted entirely in real time with his modular synthesizer, and interwoven with effe effe’s refined vocabulary of extended techniques, the album unfolds as a single unedited performance divided into five tracks Ryals’ dynamic timbral range is on full display in the opener, Knots, where restrained percussive passages erupt into bursts of feedback Effe effe enters on track three, Ancient Crimes, the midpoint of the set, where melancholic viola lines drift above Ryals’ warzone-like sonic landscapes On Limb-Loosener, the album’s single, effe effe twists and turns through a storm of electrical flares and blasts from the synthesizer From there, the two voices converge with uncanny synergy, their vocabularies fully intertwining by the closing track, Transducing the Soil.

The vinyl edition concludes with a bonus track, Crosstalk, a solo studio performance by Ryals that further highlights the improvisational language he has honed in recent years

Bardo Pond, Acid Mothers Temple & Guru Guru –

Acid Guru Pond

OUT 2025-09-05

Long overdue repress of 'Acid Guru Pond', the incredible collaboration between Bardo Pond, Japanese psychexperimentalists Acid Mother’s Temple and cosmic kosmische legends Guru Guru.

The fruits of an incredible collaboration, Acid Mothers Temple wrap their psych rock wizardry and cosmic space noise around Isobel Sollenberger’s ethereal vocals and majestic flute playing, the collective brings out the best in one another, feasting on innovation and distortion while not losing the swirling lock groove. Classic rock riffs merge and morph into the surrounding world music influences to cook up an enchanting and meditative brew.

The naming of each song after a colour only further reinforces the vibe heavy proceedings.

The Cat's Miaow - Songs '94-'98

Songs ’94-’98 is a smart selection of material from The Cat’s Miaow, an Australian indie-pop group that gifted their decade with some of its finest songs. Part of the burgeoning international pop underground of the nineties, The Cat’s Miaow’s legend has only built over subsequent decades, as more people discover this most quixotic and curious of groups: a recent appearance on A Colourful Storm’s compilation of Australian indie-pop, I Won’t Have To Think About You, is testament to their enduring influence. In part emulating the selection of tracks on the 1997 CD-only compilation, Songs For Girls To Sing, Songs ’94-’98 is also the group’s first ever full-length 12” vinyl collection. The Cat’s Miaow started out in 1992 as a home-recording duo, Bart Cummings (guitar, bass, vocals) and Andrew Withycombe (bass, guitar) taking time out from duties with Girl Of The World and The Ampersands (respectively), knocking out songs on Withycombe’s fourtrack. Soon joined by Kerrie Bolton (vocals) and Cam Smith (drums), the quartet spent the next five years quietly, slowly working away in the suburbs of Melbourne, recording gem after gem of independent pop..
