This Issue: Jason Lekberg at Pit Records

When and where did the label begin?
Pit Records is the latest iteration of GWAR’s label arm. They have been entrepreneurial from the start and though they signed to Metal Blade for a portion in the 90s and early 2000s they have always kept ownership of a large part of their IP. In essence the label started in 1984 with the band, though it did not take its current shape until early 2000 when my company was hired.
How has the label changed since it started?
Comparing the current version to the earliest, I would say that Pit now operates at a more comprehensive level with an eye to the success of the whole catalog – digitally and physically. We also invest significant effort in a robust merchandise line. Most importantly, the current iteration is laser focused on assuring that the relationship with the fans is healthy and responsive.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? When I started working with the label I expected to have a much larger focus on reissuing their large catalog. In reality, GWAR and their offshoots are so active that we are only able to squeeze in a reissue here and there. I think the biggest focus shift though has been truly learning about the core fans. Though there are many, very passionate Bohabs (GWAR’s superfans) we have shifted a good amount of energy into bringing older fans “back to the fold” in recent years.
What was the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic, and is it still a challenge?
I started with Pit Records in March of 2020, and we launched this new iteration of the label with a massive reissue of their most popular album. In all honesty, the demand for that product and the average fans expendable income at the time created an expectation of scale that has shown to be a bit exaggerated. Our biggest challenge has been “leveling off” from the partially pandemic-driven success of 2020 and 2021.
How would you describe the average fan of the label? Bohabs are lifers. GWAR and the band’s various side projects are a part of their character. We have multiple fans who have built “GWARseums” of their own. The fans buy, sell and collect GWAR merch and ephemera from the past 40 years. The fans know that Pit is owned and operated by the band, and are excited to have their voices heard when we are planning upcoming releases. We are lucky to have such devoted Bohabs.
Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find (on the label or otherwise) you’d like to rave about?
I’m personally really enjoying the genre anarchy that the younger crop of heavy musicians are bringing to the table. I generally find this on social media by reading comments and watching what others
are interacting with. I’ve been in on Sleep Token since 2019 but am still raving about him. I’m loving the growth of Erra, Currents, Alpha Wolf and Bleed From Within on each of their new albums. I think Deathbyromy and her cohorts are the ones to watch at the moment.
What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?
Having Ozzy sit in Madame Tussauds wax museum and pretend to be a statue to scare people is pretty high up there. Another favorite was having a motorcade of Harleys bring Judas Priest through Times Sq. Ah, back when budgets were silly-size.
If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outsidethe-box” or “crossover” marketing campaign?
If Metallica hadn’t beaten us to it, having GWAR play Antarctica (which is where they “live” by the way). Actually, let’s go full Metalocalypse – the Moon.
What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? I love it. There’s a small plant called Cascade that is making some beautiful, hand-made runs and those are probably my favorite at the moment. Not good for high-qty stuff or for the profit margin, but they look great!
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
Streaming. I just wish we had gotten ahead of it better and had planned a more equitable monetization of it.
How do you view the issue of being environmentally sustainable within the music industry?
I think it is always important to reduce waste wherever possible. That said, human history has shown clearly that our species would rather innovate (spend) their way around issues rather than adjust their preference. As with everything, I think finding a balance of not being wasteful while also providing a product at a price that doesn’t make us bankrupt is the key.
How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?
Very. GWAR are outspoken about their beliefs – albeit often via wit and comedy. They have always addressed inequality directly. One of my favorite things to wax lyrical about after a few barley pops is the ignored effect that success and “celebrity” has on a person’s mental state. I would love to see that become something we address, along with overall mental health – and all health – in this country.
Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance:
Big shout out to Karma Records (RIP to the southside location) in Indianapolis where I spent many a Saturday and most of my allowance growing up. Out here, big love to Looney Tunes on Long Island and my boy Jay at Static Era in CT.
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or sohow would you like the label to be remembered?
Can’t wait. I would love for it to be remembered as faithfully representing the goals of GWAR and entertaining as many Bohabs as possible.

OVERVIEW
Interior Live Oak draws from everything Cass McCombs has created over two decades of experimentation to cut through with a direct and clarifying light. Throughout, his attitude is hopeful, which may sound odd for someone who often sings about the more extreme aspects of modern life. Interior Live Oak, however, is the resolve of someone who has lived those extremes.
Named after a tree species native to Northern California, the album sees McCombs incorporate the more economical song structures of his prime material with the help of some of his earliest musical cohorts, including Jason Quever (Papercuts) and Chris Cohen . McCombs recorded much of the new material in the Bay Area, not far from where they had cut their musical teeth (as documented on last year’s archival release, Seed Cake On Leap Year). Additional recording in New York City brought with it contributions from other perennial collaborators such as Matt Sweeney and Mike Bones

OVERVIEW
1993 debut album by the trio of Andrew Weatherall, Jagz Kooner and Gary Burns. Unavailable on vinyl and CD since original release. Remastered from the original tapes by Matt Colton, contains “Smokebelch II (Beatless Mix)” for the first time on the 2LP edition.
Coming off the back of his work on the era-defining Screamadelica album by Primal Scream, not to mention groundbreaking remix work for the likes of New Order, My Bloody Valentine and the Happy Mondays, Weatherall was as revered by fans of indie guitar music as he was namechecked by hardcore ravers. The increasing demands on his services led to a studio partnership with Kooner and Burns, forming the production trio The Sabres Of Paradise (named after a 1960 book about a Muslim chieftain’s efforts to repel a Russian invasion).
The opening track on Sabresonic (named after the popular weekly club night Weatherall was then running) started life as a remix of the Primal Scream track “Don’t Fight It Feel It” but got so radically mutated that it turned into something entirely new. As well as reflecting on contemporary trends in dance music (“Inter-Legen-Ten-ko” is a swipe at the IDM genre name), the album also brought in older influences - “R.S.D” is an acronym for “Red Stripe Dub”, the deep influence of King Tubby et al evident at various points throughout the album, whilst the epic icy vistas of the 14 minute+ “Clock Factory” are informed by the electronic experiments of industrial groups such as Coil. The album also flagged future trends in electronic music, with the timeless “Smokebelch II (Beatless Mix)”, a beautiful re-work of an old Chicago house tune by Lamont Booker, becoming a staple of chillout compilation CDs for the rest of the decade.

1994 second album by the trio of Andrew Weatherall, Jagz Kooner and Gary Burns, unavailable on vinyl and CD since original release. A concept album with accompanying text for each track by James Woodbourne, it also includes additional production by Portishead and Mr Scruff. Remastered from the original tapes by Matt Colton, contains “Theme” for the first time on the 2LP edition.
By the time this record came out towards the end of ‘94, The Sabres Of Paradise had evolved from a production trio into a fully fledged band, embarking on live tours and augmented for the stage by additional members such as Rich Thair, from Warp labelmates Red Snapper, and Phil Mossman, later to join LCD Soundsystem. Tapped by Noel Gallagher to support Oasis at enormodomes, the group opted instead to play clubs, student unions, and infamously, a car park in Central London. Their tour adverts contained small print specifying a policy of “no jugglers, no fire eaters, no flutes and no hippies with lawyers”.
The studio sound had shifted radically as well, utilising samples (notably on the 1930s voodoo jazz inflected “Wilmot”), live instrumentation (the heavy twang guitar riff of “Tow Truck”) and a deep love of film scores audible throughout, from the block party funk of “Theme” to the noir-ish soundscapes of the title track. The sense of the album being a soundtrack itself is underpinned by the accompanying text for each track, rumoured to have been penned by Weatherall himself under a pseudonym, each text fragment joining up to form a suitably grimy, low-lit short story. The Guardian later summed up Haunted Dancehall as “techno’s first concept album”.

Music for Writers is a wordless collection of pieces meant to accompany thought and inspire another way. It is music made in both stillness and motion, music that listens as much as it speaks. Each track offers a space open, textured, often slowmoving where ideas, images, and feelings drift in and out. It's a record I've been thinking about and wanting to make for a long time - my first solo instrumental album.
The album was recorded across places Brooklyn, Berlin, Latvia using a minimal setup: guitar, synthesizers, field recordings, and the rooms themselves. The compositions are both structured and improvised, emerging from a process of close attention. Rather than telling a story, they respond to the light in a room, the weather outside, a moment of silence in a long day. Music for Writers is rooted in a deep need to pause, to reflect. It came from walking without direction, from listening to birds and distant engines, looking at sculpture, watching movement through a window, from writing freely in notebooks and letting sound follow thought. The music is a quiet watching of the world, both beautiful and uncertain. It is shaped by landscape, by anxiety, by peace, the unknown, by the tension between presence and movement.
These pieces are small environments, places to enter and leave as needed. Some are brief and clear, others stretch out and unfold. They echo a belief that music can create the conditions for attention or non-attention, and that it can open a space.
Mixed by Ernie Indradat, Music for Writers reflects an important aspect of my practice one that is less about song and more about atmosphere and the in-between. I hope it offers something subtle but steady: a ground for thought, a companion for work, daydreaming, grief, happiness, sadness, or simply a place to rest.

PRAISE FOR HIBOU
“The bright, beaming ‘Hide Away’ is the first song we're hearing from (Hibou), and the tune sounds a little like if the Tough Alliance's all-golden motifs merged with L.A. duo Kisses' own approach to summery pop music.” – Pitchfork
"… exploding into a wonderfully florid prog-rock finish that feels like an entire woodland scene bursting into a celebratory dance routine, possibly with aliens present. It's a surprising turn that marks the song as more than just an excellent genre exercise and Hibou as more than torchbearers in a storied tradition.” – Stereogum
"'Dissolve' is plain smooth, setting an easy-going chilled out vibe that screams waves. It builds up for more than three minutes, lulling the listener into a relaxed state. And in doing so, manages to drop a bombshell at the 3:20 mark.” –Indie Shuffle
“Hibou‘s summery jams [and] recent performance at KEXP are head-turning — not in an exorcism way, but in excitement!” – KEXP
Hibou’s self-titled LP continues to hold a very warm place in the hearts and ears of many fans, ten years after its original release — with several songs logging millions of streaming plays and over 100,000 monthly listeners on Spotify alone, Peter Michel’s debut full-length is a hazy bedroom-pop indie classic
Written, recorded and played by Michel at home in Seattle before he decamped to Paris, Hibou’s 11 songs feature a lush, driving mix of ‘80s inspired pop, fueled by twisting reverbed-out guitar melodies, elegant arrangements, and a love of soda and summertime nostalgia.
Long out of print on vinyl, Barsuk is happy to be celebrating the album’s 10th anniversary with a new colored vinyl pressing including an insert with new artwork
Hibou has announced a rare tour of the U.S. this summer behind a new album, and fan interest in this new pressing of the beloved debut album promises to be high.

An impressive mix of Hill Country Blues and BluesRock, the debut commercial release by Garry Burnside, It’s My Time Now, is a tribute to Garry’s mentors, his famous Bluesman father R L Burnside and his equally famous employer Junior Burnside, as well as his own declaration of independence after decades as a sideman for Junior Kimbrough, the North Mississippi Allstars and others Featuring nine fine Garry Burnside original compositions, one co-write with Junior Kimbrough (Ramblin’) and one classic R L Burnside cover (Bad Luck City), the album quickly establishes a unique, identifiable, individual style which features interesting rhythms and changes, frequent use of a unison vocal/guitar style common to Jazz, and lots and lots of great, great Blues and BluesRock guitar The highlights are many, including the title track, Country Boy and Ramblin’ (a couple of scorchers), and all three instrumental tracks (High, AGF and the incredible Bad Luck City)

KENT BURNSIDE
HILL COUNTRY BLOOD

Hill Country Blood is Kent Burnside’s electrifying commercial debut, carrying forward the legacy of his grandfather, R.L. Burnside, while carving out his own distinct voice in the blues world. Kent infuses his sound with a fiery dose of Blues-Rock energy and boldly reshapes the genre by blending the deep, hypnotic rhythms of Hill Country Blues with the raw energy of Blues-Rock, the soulful spirit of the Delta, and the urban grit of Chicago The album features eight original tracks alongside powerful covers of John Lee Hooker’s Crawling King Snake and Junior Kimbrough’s You Better Run. With Kent on guitar and vocals, Garry Burnside on bass, Jake Best on drums, and Damian Pearson (aka Yella P of Memphisissippi) adding soulful harmonica, Hill Country Blood is a high-energy, deeply authentic blues experience that honors the past while charging into the future.

KIRK FLETCHER Keep On Pushing
KEEP ON PUSHING is the latest from internationally hailed blues guitarist/vocalist Kirk Fletcher. Working with co-producer JD Simo and a dream team of Nashville players, Fletcher says, “My new record is called KEEP ON PUSHING, which I feel is a positive message in these uncertain times. And for me a personal message to myself suffering a stroke just a couple years ago. I’m grateful to share this album with you.”

“Armed with astonishing chops, great tone and an encyclopedic knowledge of blues styles, Kirk Fletcher is a veritable force of nature who has played with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, toured with Joe Bonamassa and traveled the world, playing what he calls “the music closest to my heart.” — Guitar Player Magazine

For nearly five decades, Dungeons & Dragons has inspired generations of creative people to make movies, novels and, yes, music. Now that relationship is even more distinct with the release today of an album of music created by cutting-edge bands and musical acts all inspired by Spelljammer: Adventures in Space. The far-out storytelling in the world’s greatest roleplaying game’s latest offering is fertile ground for composing some of the most original songs you’ll hear this year from bands like Magic Sword, Shabazz Palaces and OSEES
Spelljams features a double LP’s worth of tracks from artists all produced by Chris Funk, guitarist from The Decemberists who plays D&D with many folks in the music scene in Portland, OR. Chris Perkins, story architect at D&D and lead designer of Spelljammer, worked with Funk to recruit artists to bring the Flash Gordon-esque soundtrack to life.
Quote from Perkins: “You know what they like on the Rock of Bral? Rock music! The brilliant Chris Funk has assembled a motley crew of bards to create Spelljams—music inspired by our newest Spelljammer adventure, Light of Xaryxis. I encourage Dungeon Masters use Spelljams as background music during their D&D game sessions or listen to it while dreaming up future hijinks. Everyone else: enjoy the music of Wildspace!”
Quote from Funk: “Helping facilitate bringing this world to life through music and the amazing artists' visions that were selected was an honor of a lifetime. I am of the opinion when people think of Dungeons & Dragons that there a preconceived underscore of what these worlds might sound like. With this bold return to Spelljammer we were excited to push the boundaries “deep into Wildspace,” working with artists from diverse musical backgrounds that could challenge what music in the multiverse of the world’s greatest roleplaying game might sound like. Each artist was given a character or plot prompt from the storyline, then challenged to write an original composition based on Light of Xaryxis. We hope you enjoy the result!”

In spring 2022, Sankt Otten released their album “Symmetrie und Wahnsinn”, and now the next record is ready to enlighten our maltreated minds. “Tote Winkel” (Blind spots) is once again part of an album series with a geometric context, both creatively and musically.
Stephan Otten and Oliver Klemm made productive use of 2021, which has been decelerated to the maximum by Corona. For the first time, an external studio was booked (Mühle der Freundschaft, Bad Iburg) and the pool of analog synthesizers and other sound generators there was dusted o . Sankt Otten came up with the master plan to first free the spirit of 50 years of German electronic music trapped in the antiquated keyboards and oscillator housings, then to dismantle it, turn it inside out and reinterpret it. Echoes of music from Düsseldorf are joined by sounds familiar from the Weserbergland, or mystical, sublime arcs of sound and, of course, the sequences typical of the Berlin School - whether side by side or interwoven. In a departure from the usual way of working, the majority of the tracks were created in the studio and in part from improvisations, which makes “Tote Winkel “ the most organic material we have heard from Sankt Otten to date.

Greg
Label: Salinas Records
Format: Vinyl LP
Catalog Number: SAL-127
Release Date: August 15th, 2025
Box Lot: 48 LPs
Contact Information: salinasrecords@gmail.com

Visual Learner doesn’t believe that “pop-punk” is a dirty word but the Minneapolis four piece make a conscious effort to put an emphasis on the punk parts of their sound, with lots of noisiness thrown in for good measure. Like any Minneapolis band with scrappy melodic songs, there are regularly comparisons to bands like Hüsker Dü But the members of Visual Learner have decades of contemporary DIY experience between them in bands from New England, The South and The Midwest It wasn’t until the last five years that the members (Zac Mayeux - vocals, guitar Avery Taylor - guitar, backing vocals Morgan Purcell - bass, backing vocals (lead on “Cure All”) Tim Chandler – drums) all relocated to Minneapolis having previously put in time in Notches, Scrounger, Kira Jari, Billy Raygun, Rag Rage and Coordinated Suicides among many others.
Greg was recorded by Matt Castore at Soft Cult Studios in Minneapolis, mixed by Jeff Burke (Marked Men, Radioactivity), mastered by Will Killingsworth (Orchid, Ampere) at Dead Air Studios. The record powers through ten songs in under 30 minutes dealing with loss and grief, ego, shit jobs all with a sense of self-awareness Standouts like “Columns” “In a Snare” “Factual Heckler” and “Cure-All” showcase the bands dark but melodic brand of pop-punk.

Various Artists - Sandworms: The Songs of Howe Gelb and Giant Sand
Delving into the Great American Songbook of Howe Gelb, Sandworms is a new collection that rephrases and rephases the legacy of Giant Sand across generations. This release offers bold reinterpretations from Water From Your Eyes, Deradoorian, Jesca Hoop & John Parish, Lily Konigsberg, Holiday Ghosts, Ella Raphael, Monde UFO, The Golden Dregs, and Gently Tender.
The ever-present Giant Sand and their one-man cerebral traveller, Howe Gelb, are anchored by a reputation for idiosyncratic storytelling. A “natural storyteller,” Gelb’s multifarious musical delivery adds an enduring sense of wonder as he extols the virtues of happenstance. This collection celebrates the esoteric and singular journey Giant Sand have taken, through altcountry, jazz, lo-fi experiments, and beyond, while their legacy is reimagined here by a new generation of artists paying tribute to their lasting influence.
Brooklyn duo Water From Your Eyes, known for their stoner humour, fatalistic undercurrents, and art-pop flair, bring a delicate balance of punk riffing and dream-pop escapism to Warm Storm, first heard on Giant Sand’s Ramp (1991). Whitney K takes on Happenstance (from 1994’s Glum), unravelling its existential puzzles with a whispering baritone that recalls the hushed intensity of Leonard Cohen.
Drifting further into orbit, Angel Deradoorian reinterprets Center Of The Universe, the title track from the band’s 1992 album, transforming its desert-fried rock into a spaced-out Sun Ra-paced drama. Elsewhere, Yer Ropes, a jaw-dropping highlight from Glum, is taken on by The Golden Dregs, blurring sentimentality and relationship mismanagement into something truly strange and moving.
A special collection for both long-time fans and the newly curious, Sandworms: The Songs of Howe Gelb and Giant Sand is released via Fire Records and includes liner notes from Dave Henderson (Mojo).

WATER FROM YOUR EYES
It’s A Beautiful Place

It’s A Beautiful Place opens with zero-gravity instrumental
‘One Small Step’ – a fitting prelude for what is one giant leap for New York duo Water From Your Eyes. The album is a gleaming megalopolis, a satellite view of eras and musical forms, a reframing of the y2k songbook that is at once awestruck and mindful of its place in the vastness. “It ended up being about time, dinosaurs and space,” says Nate Amos. “We wanted to present a wide range of styles in a way that acknowledges everything’s just a tiny blip.”
The duo recorded the bulk of It’s A Beautiful Place last summer, just as they have every other WFYE release: in Amos’s bedroom. But this time, much of the writing and recording were shaped around the dynamics of a fullblooded live group: “When you’re playing with a band you tend to write with one in mind - this was the first time I wrote anything for WFYE imagining us playing anywhere bigger than a basement,” he observes.
Throughout the album is a clear sense of a band who have honed their curveballs into home runs. Looming and melancholy, wide-eyed and petrified, it’s Blade Runner meets WALL-E, it’s Kubrick and Asimov with a hint of Jay and Silent Bob. These are songs that look outward, conscious of our smallness and questioning our place in the universe while admiring the surrounding beauty.
“A song can feel like everything, communicating vast emotional landscapes,” says Amos, “but your favorite album is less important than any person. That person is less interesting than any mountain. That mountain is boring compared to any planet. That planet is only a part of a solar system. If music and all other human practices are meaningless on a cosmic scale why does it still feel so important?”

STREET DATE: August 22nd, 2025
This is The Passionate Ones. It’s not an album. It’s a sermon. A twelve-track exorcism howled from the underbelly of latestage capitalism, written, produced, and conjured entirely by Marcus Brown. This ain’t soul revival. This is soul revenge.
Crafted between London, New York City, and Baltimore—each city leaving fingerprints on the sound—The Passionate Ones channels Marcus’s global process with local truth. Born and raised in Baltimore, Brown’s work is profoundly shaped by the city’s rich and eclectic musical heritage, where jazz, punk, indie, hip hop, and R&B collide in raw, genre-fluid harmony. You can hear it in the tension and release, the way the tracks slip between worlds and histories.
The Passionate Ones is a scream at the billboard promise of success: It was never the car that was the lie—it was the idea that you’d ever get to drive it. And Marcus Brown knows it. He’s not whispering revolution. He’s crying through a busted speaker with blood on the woofer.
Each track hits like a confession soaked in gasoline. One of the standout moments comes on the eighth track “Jojo,” featuring a vocal appearance by UK producer and vocalist Tony Bontana. His presence is haunting, grounding the song in a quiet power that amplifies the album’s spiritual undercurrent without softening its fire.
This isn’t just heartbreak. This is class solidarity sung through a cracked molar. Brown’s voice burns as it soothes. Like that good medicine. And through the smoke, we see ourselves: overworked, underpaid, and refusing to go numb. This record isn’t background noise. It’s a boot to the teeth of resignation. It’s love without capitalism. Faith without churches. Labor without applause. It’s a blueprint for building your own altar in the ruins of the American Dream.

Bardo – Transformation Time
Stones Throw Records | STH2509LP 22 August 2025 | Vinyl | Indie & Alternative

After years fronting the beloved L.A. band Chicano Batman, Bardo steps into a bold new chapter with Transformation Time, his debut solo album on Stones Throw. Blending Latin rhythms, funk grooves, indie rock energy, and punk attitude, Bardo crafts a rich, genre-defying sound that reflects both his artistry and his roots. Raised in La Mirada by a Mexican father and Colombian mother, his music draws from a vibrant mix of influences from '70s and '80s R&B and classic rock to cumbia, vallenato, and salsa. The result is a deeply personal and sonically expansive record that charts his own evolution as an artist.
Bardo is the former frontman of Chicano Batman, genre-blurring L.A. band known for delivering politically charged and groove-heavy music with a vintage flair. Acclaimed by NPR and Rolling Stone and seen on major stages like Coachella, Lollapalooza, and national TV

Stones Throw Records presents the official soundtrack to the feature film The Luckiest Man in America, composed and performed by John Carroll Kirby Kirby delivers a meditative, atmospheric score that mirrors the film’s surreal tale of fortune, unraveling, and human fragility.

Whether paired with the film or heard on its own, The Luckiest Man in America is an immersive, introspective journey.

THE LAST REAL TEXAS BLUES ALBUM

Antone’s is 50 this year. That’s 50 years of Blues at Antone’s. That’s 31 years of Clifford Antone laying the groundwork, and 19 years trying to carry on his mission. That is ‘playing the blues’, but it’s deeper; it’s celebrating folks who deserve greater recognition. Putting them in the spotlight and giving them their flowers. It’s finding the right young artists to pair with them and establishing torch carriers. This album encapsulates that mission. It is The Last Real Texas Blues Album.
This album features an amazing assortment of artists covering, jamming and reinterpreting a deep catalog of classic blues songs. Recorded at Arlyn Studios in Austin, TX with a host of incredible Texas Blues musicians, this album defines and celebrates the history of Texas blues.

AUGUST 22ND, 2025
BY THE CHORDS OF A GENTLE COWBOY’S ACHING SIX-STRING AND MEMORIES OF AN ANXIOUS JOY AND YOUNG, WAYFARING LOVE”
PRESSED ON “SO MUCH BETTER NOW BLUE” VINYL
LIMITED EDITION OF 2,000 SADDLE CREEK AND INDIE EXCLUSIVE LP ON “SUNSET CREAM CAKE” VINYL
With I Hope We Can Still Be Friends, Dean Johnson’s debut for Saddle Creek, Dean makes a pact with the listener: He will sing you his truth in the most heartfelt and charming way possible, if you promise to keep an open mind.
I Hope We Can Still Be Friends is essentially an anthology that bridges Johnson’s earliest days as a songwriter with his present-day outlook and abilities. There are songs that have been in his setlists for years, and others that will be new to fans. Each of its 11 tracks contains jocular social commentary or lovingly rendered a airs of the heart. The album’s songs about love and relationships o er another way to interpret its title: as a parting thought to an ex.
Like all of Johnson’s cable-knit writing, the title is a clever banner for the album’s dual nature, the thing that binds its tragedy and comedy masks. Johnson explains that he didn’t set out to make a concept album. It’s a coincidence that about half of the album’s songs are a bit sardonic, and the other half are more lighthearted. The singer playfully refers to the former as his “mean” songs, which is why the album’s back cover is adorned with a warning that says “Beware of Dean.”
Like John Prine or Kris Kristo erson’s country-adjacent sound, devastating humor and economical profundity refracted through a barroom’s haze, the album is lled with easygoing twang, sad characters, universal truths and the absurdity of everyday life. “Carol” recounts the numb consumption and dissipating cultural attention that is besieging America. There’s a search for optimism amid meditations on dying in a plane crash in “Before You Hit the Ground.” Romance that is best forgotten steers “So Much Better” — only Johnson could weave electroconvulsive therapy into a gentle, chuckle-inducing missive on unbearable heartbreak.
I Hope We Can Still Be Friends oats in a liminal plane between timely and timeless, its minimalist instrumentation elevating Johnson’s a ecting voice to new heights.
Dean Johnson has toured and will tour with Rilo Kiley, Gregory Alan Isakov, Jenny Lewis, and Esther Rose.

SIDE B
7. Wildfires 8. Change Me 9. Not Fade Away

Glitterfox’s debut full-length decoder is a supernova of sound and spirit — a soundtrack for becoming, undoing, and becoming again. Produced by Chris Funk of The Decemberists, the album traces deeply personal terrain, exploring queer love, personal transformation, neurodivergence, and the emotional aftershocks of a romantic split between longtime creative partners Solange Igoa (vocals) and Andrea Walker (guitar).
Joined by chosen family — bassist Eric Stalker and drummer Blaine Heinonen — Glitterfox is a band rooted in connection. That thread pulses through every track: the obsessive, looping ache of “Gamma Ray”; the tender unraveling of “Polaroids” and “Lookin Away,” which chronicle Walker’s late-in-life autism diagnosis; the quiet grief of “Not Fade Away,” and the beauty of queer kinship and radical visibility in “Jesse Lee” and “Richie’s Party.”
This is a record steeped in gratitude, grief, and growth — showcasing the band’s ability to turn vulnerability into voltage. It’s confessional but never self-pitying, danceable but never escapist — music for the messy middle of life, lit with clarity, courage, and chaos.
decoder knows the cost of masking, the ache of nostalgia, the sting of unspoken pain — and the joy of surviving it all. It’s an album about love in all its forms: romantic, platonic, familial, and self. About the beauty of finally learning who you are — and the bravery it takes to live that truth out loud.
“This record is about turning the volume up on your truth... decoder is what it sounds like when you stop hiding.” — Andrea Walker

This isn’t just a debut. It’s Glitterfox decoding who they are — and inviting the rest of us to do the same.

THE WOMACK SISTERS
The debut single from Soul Music nobility, The Womack Sisters, is a one-two punch of soulful excellence. "If You Want Me" displays uncompromising rawness with pop-sensible control in equal measure. Propelled by the percussive attack of the piano and the hard-hitting call and response vocals the track has a satisfyingly feel-good swing, allowing the groove to accentuate the hook. Sure to be a universally filed disc for DJs looking to bring some life to the dancefloor. On "I Just Don't Want You" sisters Kujcha and Zeimani's plaintive background vocals and BG's powerful lead come together like a harmonic bouquet in full bloom. A deeply soulful ballad at its core it tells a tale of someone coming to terms with the pain of being in love with Mr. Wrong when you know you deserve Mr. Right.

ROCKER’S REVENGE FEAT. DONNIE CALVIN WALKING ON SUNSHINE (YARD ACT REMIX) / (JUNIOR VASQUEZ REMIX)
22ND AUGUST 2025
Originally a breakout hit in the summer of 1982, “Walking on Sunshine” captured the spirit of a generation and took the USA +UK by storm - it was no 1 on the USA Dance Chart + no 4 in the UK main top 40.
Penned by the legendary Eddy Grant, this electrifying remake by Rockers Revenge, fronted by the soulful vocals of Donnie Calvin, was born out of visits to the hallowed halls of Paradise Garage in New York — shaped in Brooklyn’s Music Factory Record Store, fine-tuned at Intergalactic Studios in Manhattan, and then completed at the iconic Blank Tape Studio by Bob Blank, Jellybean Benitez, and pioneering producer Arthur Baker.
Now, the track returns just in time for summer — reimagined by UK indie art rockers Yard Act, Leeds’ genre-defying favorites. Introduced to the track by Remi Kabaka of Gorillaz during production on their second album, Yard Act not only remixes the classic but James Smith from the band also contributes fresh vocals to this bold new version. Notably, Arthur Baker also contributed a remix to Yard Act’s Trench Coat Museum - a full-circle moment of mutual inspiration.
On the B-side is a previously unreleased gem: a 1988 house remix by the legendary Junior Vasquez, unearthed from the archives and sounding as forwardthinking today as it did then.
With Rockers Revenge still actively recording and a long-awaited documentary in post-production — set to premiere at film festivals and release by the end of 2025 — the legacy of this seminal group continues to shine bright.

It highlights the vocals of Martina Horvath and presents a collection of Mansur songs in a more hypnotic and trance like manner. This album can be seen as songs for transcendental rituals.

The seeds that germinated between Endlings - a long-running musical collaboration between John Dieterich and Pulitzer Prize winner Raven Chacon - and the Vancouver New Music Circle extends back the Summer and Fall of 2020 and has resulted not only in an album of new work but a fully interactive online instrument presented as a website. More than a website, the project is described as a “shared folder, many folders, an anonymous process, a translation device, a score, a text, a sound, more sounds, words ,many scores ,a multiplier, an exercise in collaboration, a bridge, a mixer, an index, a list, room with rooms in it, a journey or a trip, an album to be ” The creation of the album and the website, "took place on the internet,on many screens, between email threads, in Albuquerque, and on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəyəm, Sḵwxwú7mesh, səlílwətaʔɬ qicəy, qʷɑ:nƛən and Semiahma First Nations ”
This album is a tangible and resonating trace of the creative work and interactions that have been developing and growing among all the artists involved in Vancouver New Music's PARALLEL 03 over a few months of collective work, dialogues, creations, discoveries and exchange in the Summer and Fall of 2020. In its labyrinthine nature the magic PARALLEL 03 website further complements and reveals the richness and powerful interconnections of this ongoing process The album features the work of Parmela Attariwala, Adrian Avendaño, John Brennan, Elisa Ferrari, Marina Hasselberg, Alanna Ho, Steve Chow and Joel Schuman
As an album, PARALLEL 03 is nurtured by many things: abstraction, analogy, beauty, brainstorming, intuition, tension, divergent thinking, questions, improvisation, noise, anxiety, diversity, magical thinking, playfulness, ambiguity, serendipity, storytelling, experiment and the power of imagination
dispersion, infiltration, osmosis, adoption, abstraction, contagion music here finally aspires to the dimension of scent
Musical communication only exists on a purely emotional level
Emotionality is immanent, expression is definitely linked to the instant, instant is unpredictably transcendent

PARALLEL03

The labyrinthine and multi-dimensional nature of this project and this space has been inspired by imagination and perplexities, meandering, translations, sonic and silent utterances while discovering the ephemeral poetry hidden everywhere, fragments used to define an ongoing and endless process in which we wander on the verge of discovering ( or revealing) ourselves Fragments of form: perhaps the only possible form.
Here we won't find a single, indisputable centre, here a different kind of Harmonia, questions and awe, make everything equally important and equally unimportant. Here we blur invention and imagination, while they both give themselves to our perceptions in their multi-form and magical nature, while they act with full agency and are not acted upon Invention and imagination here are not related to expression, as their very nature is purely symbolic: like cloudiness is not just about clouds. While looking at and immersing ourselves in these clouds we open to vast horizons while resonating with creative energy and poetics of engagement
Finally, a poetic vision emerges here within qualities and behaviours essential to any practice of freedom; to any healthy relationship among people and communities and within the biosphere we live in, the magic beauty of the fundamental interconnectedness of all things.
