This Issue: Jason Lekberg at Pit Records

When and where did the label begin?
Pit Records is the latest iteration of GWAR’s label arm. They have been entrepreneurial from the start and though they signed to Metal Blade for a portion in the 90s and early 2000s they have always kept ownership of a large part of their IP. In essence the label started in 1984 with the band, though it did not take its current shape until early 2000 when my company was hired.
How has the label changed since it started?
Comparing the current version to the earliest, I would say that Pit now operates at a more comprehensive level with an eye to the success of the whole catalog – digitally and physically. We also invest significant effort in a robust merchandise line. Most importantly, the current iteration is laser focused on assuring that the relationship with the fans is healthy and responsive.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? When I started working with the label I expected to have a much larger focus on reissuing their large catalog. In reality, GWAR and their offshoots are so active that we are only able to squeeze in a reissue here and there. I think the biggest focus shift though has been truly learning about the core fans. Though there are many, very passionate Bohabs (GWAR’s superfans) we have shifted a good amount of energy into bringing older fans “back to the fold” in recent years.
What was the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic, and is it still a challenge?
I started with Pit Records in March of 2020, and we launched this new iteration of the label with a massive reissue of their most popular album. In all honesty, the demand for that product and the average fans expendable income at the time created an expectation of scale that has shown to be a bit exaggerated. Our biggest challenge has been “leveling off” from the partially pandemic-driven success of 2020 and 2021.
How would you describe the average fan of the label? Bohabs are lifers. GWAR and the band’s various side projects are a part of their character. We have multiple fans who have built “GWARseums” of their own. The fans buy, sell and collect GWAR merch and ephemera from the past 40 years. The fans know that Pit is owned and operated by the band, and are excited to have their voices heard when we are planning upcoming releases. We are lucky to have such devoted Bohabs.
Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find (on the label or otherwise) you’d like to rave about?
I’m personally really enjoying the genre anarchy that the younger crop of heavy musicians are bringing to the table. I generally find this on social media by reading comments and watching what others
are interacting with. I’ve been in on Sleep Token since 2019 but am still raving about him. I’m loving the growth of Erra, Currents, Alpha Wolf and Bleed From Within on each of their new albums. I think Deathbyromy and her cohorts are the ones to watch at the moment.
What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?
Having Ozzy sit in Madame Tussauds wax museum and pretend to be a statue to scare people is pretty high up there. Another favorite was having a motorcade of Harleys bring Judas Priest through Times Sq. Ah, back when budgets were silly-size.
If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outsidethe-box” or “crossover” marketing campaign?
If Metallica hadn’t beaten us to it, having GWAR play Antarctica (which is where they “live” by the way). Actually, let’s go full Metalocalypse – the Moon.
What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? I love it. There’s a small plant called Cascade that is making some beautiful, hand-made runs and those are probably my favorite at the moment. Not good for high-qty stuff or for the profit margin, but they look great!
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
Streaming. I just wish we had gotten ahead of it better and had planned a more equitable monetization of it.
How do you view the issue of being environmentally sustainable within the music industry?
I think it is always important to reduce waste wherever possible. That said, human history has shown clearly that our species would rather innovate (spend) their way around issues rather than adjust their preference. As with everything, I think finding a balance of not being wasteful while also providing a product at a price that doesn’t make us bankrupt is the key.
How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?
Very. GWAR are outspoken about their beliefs – albeit often via wit and comedy. They have always addressed inequality directly. One of my favorite things to wax lyrical about after a few barley pops is the ignored effect that success and “celebrity” has on a person’s mental state. I would love to see that become something we address, along with overall mental health – and all health – in this country.
Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance:
Big shout out to Karma Records (RIP to the southside location) in Indianapolis where I spent many a Saturday and most of my allowance growing up. Out here, big love to Looney Tunes on Long Island and my boy Jay at Static Era in CT.
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or sohow would you like the label to be remembered?
Can’t wait. I would love for it to be remembered as faithfully representing the goals of GWAR and entertaining as many Bohabs as possible.

Description: 2LPblack vinyl in gatefold sleeve

MIKE & Tony Seltzer unveil the double vinyl edition of Pinball, featuring the first album on disc one, and the recent sequel on disc two. While the original Pinball was beloved by fans and saw a strong critical reception, there was a certain novelty to hearing MIKE rap in such a straightforward manner. The novelty is gone on Pinball II, as MIKE hones his writing and delivers some of the best and most energetic raps of his career. Not to be outdone,Tony's production sounds bigger and bolder than before.
Two projects in, they have true chemistry and create a project that is perhaps the most accessible of MIKE's career while keeping the essence that has got him to this point. Guest features and collaborators across both projects include Earl Sweatshirt, Clams Casino, Jay Critch, Akachi (frequent Chief Keef producer), Lunchbox, Sideshow, Niontay, and many more.

Soul Jazz Records Presents JACKIE MITTOO Reggae Magic

Jackie Mittoo’s ‘Reggae Magic’ is a new collection from the great Jackie Mittoo. The album features a mixture of classic tunes and rarities from the period 1967-74, when Mittoo was at the height of his musical powers.
Mittoo’s solo career began after the end of The Skatalites in 1965. He began pushing new musical boundaries, creating a uniquely identifiable organ-led funky reggae sound that owed as much to Booker T and The MGs, Jimmy Smith, Stax and Motown as to the post-ska and emergent rocksteady island rhythms of Kingston, Jamaica.
His solo work at the legendary Studio One spanned seven albums and hundreds of singles. Aside from producer and founder Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd, it’s hard to think of anyone more central to the sound and success of Studio One than Mittoo; keyboard player extraordinaire, songwriter, arranger, musician, truly the Keyboard King at Studio One.
Jackie Mittoo had been the youngest founding member of The Skatalites (at age 16), probably the most important group in Jamaican music. After they split, he became leader of the three pivotal groups at Studio One – The Soul Brothers, The Soul Vendors and Sound Dimension. He also became musical director for Studio One, helping create countless hits for singers Ken Boothe, Bob Andy, The Wailers, John Holt, Delroy Wilson and more – unforgettable tunes like Alton Ellis’ ‘I’m Still in Love with You’, Marcia Griffiths’ ‘Feel Like Jumping’, The Heptones’ ‘Baby Why’ and others.
Between 1965 and 1968, many of the tunes created at Studio One can be attributed to Mittoo – timeless instrumental tracks, recorded either under his own name or those of The Soul Brothers, Soul Vendors and Sound Dimension, that have become the basis for literally 1000s and 1000s of Jamaican songs over many decades, giving the music an unsurpassed longevity.
The endurance of his music was as a direct result of significant developments in Jamaican music in the 1970s, namely the creation of three important new styles: Dub, Deejay and Dancehall. In the early 1970s Mittoo’s instrumental tracks were used as the musical source for a series of classic Studio One dub albums. At the same time Deejays at Studio One, including Dillinger, Prince Jazzbo and Dennis Alcapone, began toasting over these same popular rhythms to create their own new songs.
In the mid-70s, a new generation of Studio One singers and deejays, including Sugar Minott, Freddie McGregor, Johnny Osbourne, Michigan & Smiley and others, began once again creating new melodies over these original instrumentals, signalling the birth of a new Jamaican style that became known as ‘dancehall’. As dancehall swept across the island, rival producers copied these now classic rhythms.
These original Jackie Mittoo-driven tunes spread like a virus throughout Jamaican music; be they the instrumental cuts to tunes such as Alton Ellis’ ‘Mad Mad’ , ‘I’m Just A Guy’, Larry Marshall’s ‘Mean Girl’, Slim Smith’s ‘Rougher Yet’, and instrumentals such as Mittoo’s classic ‘Hot Milk’ or ‘One Step Beyond’, The Sound Dimension’s ‘Real Rock’, ‘Heavy Rock’, ‘Full Up’, ‘Drum Song’, ‘Rockfort Rock’ … and the list goes on. These tracks became a constant soundtrack to the island, emitting from the ever-present sound of speaker boxes strung up around dancehalls.
This recycling travelled even farther afield; The Sound Dimension’s instrumental ‘Real Rock’, updated by Willie Williams on his classic ‘Armageddon Time’ was in turn covered by The Clash. Lily Allen sampled Mittoo’s debut solo single ‘Free Soul’ for number one hit ‘Smile’; Dawn Penn’s ‘You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No)’, accompanied by The Soul Vendors, was revived by Penn and producers Steely & Cleevie in 1994, since covered by Rihanna, Ghostface Killah, Stephen Marley, Damian Marley and Beyonce.
And so it goes; an endless time-leaping, continent-hopping diasporic musical map of the world with all roads essentially leading back to one man – Jackie Mittoo.

CORB LUND FIVE DOLLAR BILL

Five Dollar Bill was originally released in 2003, and is now going to be widely available on vinyl for the first time. This record includes songs that are staples in Corb Lund’s live set, such as “(Gonna) Shine Up My Boots” and “Time to Switch to Whiskey.” In addition to these lively jams, Five Dollar Bill features everything from romantic imagery of Corb’s homeland, “Short Native Grasses (Prairies of Alberta),” to songs that give the listener a glimpse into the life of working class folks, such as “Roughest Neck Around” which is an ode to oil riggers and the grit that is required with that lifestyle. “‘Five Dollar Bill’ was a big milestone for me for lots of reasons. It was my first record after my metal band, The Smalls, broke up and it’s when I got really serious about western music. I really dove into my family’s cowboy ancestry and my very rural upbringing in this batch of songs. It was also our first record of many produced by Harry Stinson who is now a very close friend, and our first brush with Nashville, Tennessee, as we recorded half the record down there. It was our last record with Ryan Vikedal on the drums before he flew off into fame and fortune with Nickelback. It was also our last record as a trio. It was my first gold album,” says Lund, “And we are still playing lots of these songs at our shows. It really defined my path forward as a western songwriter and helped lay the foundation for my whole career. I wrote a bunch of it holed up in a dingy room in the Brooks Hotel in Alberta.”
This limited edition release is part of the Corb Lund - Dark Horses Club. New West Records will be releasing unreleased records and material from Corb Lund throughout 2025 and 2026.

TRAVIS ROBERTS rebel rose

If anyone knows how to roll with the punches, it’s Travis Roberts. At 24, the Texas songwriter has already battled addiction, buried friends, and been so broke he couldn’t put a roof over his head. Hell, he even joined an underground fight club just to pay for studio time.
“Whoever won the fights took home the lion’s share of the money,” he explains, “but even if you lost, you made something. I lost a lot, but I got what I needed out of it.”
It should be no surprise, then, that Roberts comes out swinging on his blistering debut, Rebel Rose. Recorded with Roberts’ longtime live band, The Willing Few, the album fuses earnest country storytelling with rowdy rock and roll energy as it blurs the lines between roots, punk, folk, and power pop. The writing is raw and visceral here, built on gritty portraits of workingclass underdogs just trying to get by, and the performances are nothing short of explosive, propelled by a relentless rhythm section, searing guitars, and infectious melodic hooks. The result is an exhilarating album that defies easy categorization, an alternately bruising and triumphant reflection on growing up, getting clean, and giving it your all from an artist who’s taken more than his fair share of hits.
Every fighter knows, it doesn’t matter how many times you get knocked down. All that matters is how many times you get back up.

THE EMKAYS
Since the release of their last single The Emkays have been busy generating some well-earned buzz on the West Coast scene, sharing the stage with an eclectic array of heavy-weights like Lee Fields, Thee Sacred Souls, The Altons, The Charities and The Mystery Lights...to name a few. The A-side of their forthcoming single, "Let Love Walk Out Again" is a shimmering, dreamy ballad fortified with orchestral bells and a graceful arrangement that evokes the sleek sophistication of groups like The Zombies. On the flip you'll find "Through the Pines" - an instrumental whose delicate swing, tasteful vibraphone and ethereal Oohs and Ahs make for a hauntingly beautiful experience.

Fontaines D.C. release a limited edition expanded version of their GRAMMY-nominated and BRIT-winning “ROMANCE” on turquoise vinyl, including a bonus black 7” single featuring the new songs ‘It’s Amazing To Be Young’ and ‘Before You I Just Forget’.
Irish indie rock sensation Fontaines D.C. return with new album ROMANCE, their debut on XL Recordings. Recorded shortly after their tour supporting Arctic Monkeys, it seizes on the momentum of 2022’s Skinty Fia, which firmly established them as one of today’s most exciting rock bands. ROMANCE represents a bold sonic and stylistic evolution for the band and lead single “Starburster” shows the band at their most electrifying to date, as Chatten’s swaggering stream of consciousness collides with explosive production.

Hatebreed vocalist Jamey Jasta described Supremacy as an “all-out onslaught of completely adrenaline-charged, in-your-face brutality,” and who are we to argue (in fact, we’d be afraid to)?! Hatebreed came up through the Connecticut hardcore scene (they actually kind of invented it), and recorded acclaimed albums for the Victory and Universal labels before moving to Roadrunner for this 2006 record, which featured the debut of guitarist Frank “3 Gun” Novinec. Supremacy’s sonic assault took it to #31 on the charts, but there’s more to it than just piledriving riffs; Jasta’s personal statement (reproduced on the insert) is remarkable for its honesty and its quasi-Nietzschean philosophy, and the lyrics (e.g. “Mind over All;” “Supremacy of Self”) follow suit. Remastered for its U.S. vinyl debut by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision, pressed in ruby red wax!

STREET DATE: AUGUST 8, 2025
Motown’s L.A.-based Mowest label lasted less than two years, but managed in that short time to release some of the most adventurous music the company ever put out. And probably the most intrepid—and nowadays, adored—Mowest release of them all was the 1992 self-titled release from Odyssey. This one-off brought elite West Coast sessionmen like Wrecking Crew mainstay Don Peake, one-time Chicago member Donnie Dacus, and arranger/orchestrator extraordinaire Gene Page together with a bunch of West Coast hippie rockers (as Peake says, “We were invited to lunch, introduced to some nice people and told we were going to form a band”). The happy result was a record that has appeared on more deejay turntables than you can count, a one-of-a-kind blend of funky Motown bottom with a spacy sensibility and sound that fits right in next to, say, the latest Khruangbin album on your psychedelic chill playlist even as it activates your 5th Dimension sunshine pop endorphins. The single “Our Lives Are Shaped by What We Love” is probably the pick to click, but the whole album is a total vibe. We’re reissuing Odyssey for the first time ever in the U.S. (the Japanese have long been all over this album) in blue-green “ocean spray” vinyl, complete with original album art including the lyric insert. Remastered for the format by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision, and pressed at Gotta Groove Records for superior sound. A must!

Lou Bond only made one album but what an album it was. Politically charged, deeply introspective, and wonderfully lyrical, 1974’s Lou Bond is reminiscent of the Eugene McDaniels releases Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse and Outlaw (both out previously on Real Gone) in its outspoken, idiosyncratic social commentary. But there is a sensitivity here that’s devastating; Bond’s falsetto soaring over his strummed acoustic guitar brings to mind Bill Withers (whose “Let Me into Your Life” he covers) at his most affecting, while the orchestrated arrangements summon What’s Going On vibes. With comparisons like those, you know this record is special, but Lou Bond is a one-of-a-kind album that really defies comparison (despite our best efforts). For this ALLANALOG reissue, we had our friends at Well Made Music cut lacquers directly from the original tapes, and pressed the record at Gotta Groove Records. Available either in black vinyl or clear yellow. Both Outkast and Mary K. Blige sampled Lou Bond…that’s because it’s one of the lynchpin albums of Memphis soul.

THE JACK MOVES Love Machine
The Jack Moves released their self-titled debut album in 2015 through Wax Poetics. The album was praised for its seamless combination of retro soul influences with modern production aesthetics. In 2018, The Jack Moves released their sophomore album Free Money. with radio station KCRW naming it one of the best albums of the year. The Jack Moves released their third album, Cruiserweight, in 2022. Described as their most cinematic and cohesive project to date, the album delved deeper into their Newark roots while incorporating influences from the golden age of soul and funk and found strong support from BBCs Radio6.
Love Machine, The Jack Moves fourth album, blurs the line between what was and what’s next. Making funky soul marmalade and sweet electric jelly. They continue to explore the themes of classic R&B eras but this time through the lens of Grammy winning producer Adan Jodorowsky. Travelling to his Mexico City Studio to record these tracks.
Zee and Teddy are here to break the conspiracy and dominate the indie-soul scene.

T. HARDY MORRIS
ARTIFICIAL TEARS

The line between art and entertainment has always been fuzzy. Certainly, there’s plenty of overlap between the two, but lately it feels like there’s a growing divide, an ever-widening chasm separating our fundamental need for creative expression and our insatiable appetite for disposable content. That’s where T. Hardy Morris comes in.
“I’ve spent a lot of time parsing the difference between the two,” he explains, “not just for myself, but for society at large. What does it mean to be an artist? How do we measure creative success? Where are the boundaries between audience and performer when everyone’s broadcasting their lives 24/7?”
Morris dives into those questions headfirst on his riveting new album, Artificial Tears, and while the answers don’t come easily, the search yields plenty of reward. Recorded in Nashville with My Morning Jacket’s Carl Broemel at the helm, the collection is an electrifying work of existential exploration, a raw, rock and roll reflection on meaning and identity in a modern world that’s simultaneously more connected and isolated than ever before. Despite the weighty ruminations at its core, the result is a remarkably grounded, down to earth album that’s at once honest and abstract, a poignant, clear-eyed look in the mirror from a master craftsman committed to his work for nothing more— and nothing less—than its own intrinsic value.

Alongside with the release of the new album “Tote Winkel”, Sankt Otten will be delighting us with another limited vinyl bonus release. “Hymnen und Helden” (Hymns and heroes) is a collection of cover versions created over the last few years. As the album title suggests, it pays homage to self-proclaimed musical hymns and heroes from the seventies and eighties.
HYMNEN UND HELDEN – track by track:
A well-known Moog sequence leads us on the way into the cover album. Giorgio Moroders 1977 disco classic “I feel love” has been tackled here. Sankt Ottens instrumental interpretation starts out familiar, but ends in a slightly disturbing disharmony of mellotron and ebow guitar.
The instrumental version of the melancholy Wipers anthem from 1983 starts with a rather unusually fast 808 beat for Sankt Otten. The 80s electronic echoes suit the punk rock earworm “Doom Towen” surprisingly well.
Without Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft, more unusual electronic music would hardly have been conceivable in Germany in the early 1980s. “Alles ist gut” tribute to this band and singer Gabi Delgado-Lopez, who passed away in 2020 and with whom they shared the festival stage in 2015. Gabi‘s lyrics are rendered by textto-speech software with the voice of an unknown Claudia.
“Wishing (If I had a photograph of you)” was made famous in 1982 by A Flock of Seagulls. This record was regularly played on Stephan Ottens turntable back then. Reason enough to remember this with “Sehnen (Hätte Ich von dir eine Fotografie)”. The recordings for this album were made in 2007 and have been updated and completed in the last year. Carsten Sandkämper, who was also featured on Sankt Ottens debut album “Eine kleine Traurigkeit”, contributed the vocals and lyrics.

WING SING RECORDS AR014
Naarm/Melbourne-based punk rock powerhouse SheppartonAirplane are thrilled to announce the upcoming release of their fourth album, Forecast, set for release onAugust 8th via Wing Sing Records.
The highly anticipated follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2020 LP, Sharks, marks a compelling evolution for the band, leaning into a more song-oriented approach while still retaining the raw energy their live shows are celebrated for.
Despite these developments, the band retains the sharp, pithy punk rock and jagged melodies that have defined their sound since their early days.
Forecast promises to impress fans of outsider guitar-driven sounds and followers of the band members' other projects. Ultimately, the album reaffirms that raw, honest, loud rock'n'roll is alive and well in Naarm/Melbourne,Australia.

As children of the Cold War era, Soporus are heavily influenced by a lifelong fascination with the quiet power of nuclear energy - the seemingly miraculous ability to calmly harness intense reactions coupled with the lingering fear of potential disaster. Soporus continue with the nuclear power plant themes established on their debut ep, Atómové Elektrárne, with their full-length 24,110
Soporus is a Philadelphia-based ambient drone ensemble which features guitarist and keyboardist Matthew Stone and bassist William Stichter from well-known instrumental act Saxon Shore along with guitarist Stephen Hoffman. Additional guitar tracks were provided on the album by James Vella (Yndi Halda, a lily) and John Donohue. The live performance also features films and videos edited on the fly by additional member Michael Stichter.
24,110 is the half-life in years of the Plutonium-239 isotope. In nuclear fission reactions that take place in a nuclear power plant, plutonium isotopes are a waste product with Plutonium-239 being the largest component. Plutonium-239 is also the main radioactive material in nuclear weaponry. It is that contrast between usefulness and deadliness that frames Soporus' layered shimmering ambient guitar washes, droning bass, and lush keyboards that meander between quiet, soaring beauty and droning noise. Like the peacefulness of a sleek cooling tower in the distance, slowly billowing out beautiful soft clouds of white steam while the reactor below contains the ingredients that power our society but also have the potential to annihilate us all.
The opening track "Chalk River" refers to a site in Canada which manufactures a large percentage of the world's supply of medical isotopes. Though chartered to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy, Chalk River also supplied substantial amounts of Plutonium-239 to the United States for weapons manufacture during the Cold War.
"Good Luck In Your Road" is the English translation of a sign outside of Pripyat, the site of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, and makes use of Geiger counter sample noise. "Lelechenky" is the name given to an art/dance collective formed by children who survived the Chernobyl disaster. They perform traditional Ukrainian dances and sing Ukrainian folk songs to raise money for children affected by Chernobyl.
"Tokaimura" is a small Japanese fuel preparation facility. Workers were not properly trained to make a batch of experimental fuel and brought too much enriched uranium together which caused an uncontrolled chain reaction. Over a hundred workers received large doses of radiation and 2 workers died from radiation exposure. "Peabody" is a reference to Robert Peabody who died after an accident at a nuclear power plant fuel facility in Rhode Island in 1964. He is the only person ever killed in an American nuclear accident and the circumstances were similar to the Tokaimura accident. His liquid uranium reached a critical mass and emitted lethal doses of radiation.
"Project Salt Vault" was an experiment to see if spent nuclear fuel rods could be successfully contained deep in a Kansas salt mine. Salt does naturally absorb radiation and the experiment was successful, though the site was abandoned due to concerns that the fuel rods could potentially interact with underground water and oil reservoirs.
"3.28.79 Part II" and "3.28.79 Part III" borrow audio interviews from a repository of almost 300 audio tapes of interviews conducted by Dr. Lonna Malmsheimer and her Dickinson College colleagues soon after the nearby Three Mile nuclear accident. These audio tapes and supporting materials have been made available on the internet to understand the facts of the incident and the varying degrees of public reaction. Matthew Stone grew up in nearby Lebanon, PA and his father recalled being sent home from his work in Harrisburg, PA during the TMI incident. This helped inspire Stone's interest in nuclear power plant accidents which heavily influence Soporus' material.
24,110 is dedicated to the spirit of the Lelechenky and to Wladimir Schewtschenko who filmed footage of the Chernobyl accident and died from radiation poisoning (his only protection was a surgical mask and his camera was buried with the rest of Chernobyl's radioactive debris). The mysterious majesty of 24,110 is a requiem of the aftermath of life and nuclear power.

As their Soporus project ticks past 15 years and guitarist Matthew Stone and bassist William Stichter approach 40 while raising families, buying houses, and starting businesses, they’ve put together another album, onceagain supported by lifelong-friend Scott Hatch’s Philadelphia-based Burnt Toast Vinyl label. Soporus was founded as a side-project from their time together in the post-rock instrumental band Saxon Shore; slowly and quietly, they began to build their catalog of shoegaze-inspired, ambient drone music that has informed the core of who they are as musicians and as humans. Windscale Pile No.1 follows their debut ep, Atómové Elektrárne (2005), and their full-length, 24,110 (2008), on BTV, alongside a slew of digital releases and compilation appearances as well as a handful of soundtrack projects that all form a body of work that is both tightly crafted and widely varied; a chronicle of their explorations of sound and technique.
Thematically, Soporus is informed by ideas of memory, family, and humanity's attempts to harness nuclear power. Yes, nuclear power–and in particular, the tightrope walk of calmly harnessing potentially disastrous reactions at nuclear power plants–has continued to provide the duo with inspiration, springing from a childhood in the Cold War era and central Pennsylvania roots in the shadow of Three Mile Island. Windscale Pile No.1 is no different; the title refers to the 1957 fire at the reactor facility in northwest England – Great Britain’s worst nuclear accident, and the titular tracks show Soporus at their most elegantly composed ("Pt. I") and generative ("Pt.II"). "A Clear View of Three Mile From On Top of Governor Dick Tower," a spare and haunting solo guitar piece, describes the sightline from near Stone’s childhood home to the nuclear facility south of Harrisburg, PA, inspired by a New Year's walk with his daughter, gazing upon Three Mile Island from the mountainside at sunset. "Ahmadi-Roshan" is slow-moving, noisy and melodic and the track is named for the assassinated Iranian nuclear scientist whose death at age 32 left a family behind. "An Elegy for Voyager" is a subtly glacial drone evoking Stone’s personal sorrow as we near the end of the lifetime of the Voyager mission, knowing that the greatest achievements of humanity will be drifting through space, alone and silent, for an incomprehensibly long time. The descriptions and comparisons may seem extravagant, but the music hangs right with them, inviting the listener to pause and take a moment of immersion and contemplation.
Matthew Stone and William Stichter have been making music together since they were kids. Together, they stumbled through early teenage indie rock bands, learning instruments, making tapes, and playing basements while coming of age in the mid-nineties DIY underground music scene, and later made records and toured the world with instrumental act Saxon Shore, all the while continuing a variety of art-, space-, and just plain rock projects with each other and friends. Partway through this lifelong friendship and collaboration, they formed Soporus as a side project to explore and extend the subtle and spacious interludes they were developing as an aspect of Saxon Shore and other bands’ sounds.
Stone and Stichter count guitar and bass, respectively, as their main instruments, and each has developed unique playing techniques to utilize them in the service of atmospheric space and swelling waves of sounds. They began these explorations as tiny embellishments within the context of a variety of bands throughout their careers; from cello bow experiments in indie rock outfit Somerset (one of Burnt Toast Vinyl’s earliest bands) to the many-layered improvised guitars of dreamy art-rock ensemble Reels of White Softly Flow (also BTV). These skills flourished as they helped push instrumental band Saxon Shore’s sound into epically cinematic aural landscapes in a series of well-received albums as well as live shows throughout the US, Asia, and Europe. As their reverence for ambient music grew during the same period (they count The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid and William Basinski’s Disintegration Loops as formative influences), it was only natural to form Soporus – the name comes from Latin: “to lull to sleep”–in the early 2000s to specifically focus on this aspect of their musicianship. Currently, their talents remain in demand: Stichter plays bass in Philadelphia band Cape Wrath and Stone has a synth-pop project called Williams Shift with Saxon Shore drummer Stephen Roessner. However, they continue to return to Soporus as a constant touchstone and outlet expressing the music that is closest to their hearts.
Soporus has continued to rely on the DIY community spirit developed in their youth; nearly everything is recorded at home and mixed and mastered by Stone, while live performances typically feature vital contributions from projectionist Michael Stichter, guitarist Stephen Hoffman, and bassist Matthew Thomas. A designer and artist by trade, William Stichter is responsible for the visual aspects of the presentation, and even hand-printed Windscale Pile No.1’s packaging in his screen printing and letterpress studio. Taken together, Windscale Pile No.1 is a portrait of Stone and Stichter’s lives–intimate and personal, yet ambitious and elegant–lives lived immersed in making music and art, by themselves and constantly connected to their community.

TeddyAbrams Preludes
Teddy Abrams, the Grammy Award winning conductor, composer, and multi-instrumentalist deemed by the New York Times as a “Maestro of the People,” and named Musical America’s 2022 Conductor of the Year, announces Preludes, an album of solo piano works composed and performed by Abrams and produced by Gabriel Kahane and Casey Foubert, via New Amsterdam Records
Preludes is a contemplative, personal, and playful set of simple solo piano pieces whose recorded sonic identities were developed in collaboration with Gabriel Kahane and Casey Foubert. Kahane and Foubert “identified the personality of each Prelude and found a sound world for every track to match the intrinsic characteristics of the individual works ” The 16 pieces that make up Preludes take inspiration from the canon of classical piano works such as Bach’s Inventions and Bartok’s Mikrokosmos, yet they are imbued with Abrams’ immaculate compositional language and a depth in production uncommon to “classical” works.
Coming on the tail end of Abram’s Grammy Award
Winning Piano Concerto (2023), Abrams explains: “After the crazy, frenetic, joyful energy of my Piano Concerto, I wanted to create a piano work that explored a completely different energy and soundscape. While the Piano Concerto is overtly populist, referencing American genres like jazz, funk, and Gospel music, the Preludes are meant to be introspective, intimate, and simple enough for pianists of many skill levels to play in both performance and home settings ”

JuriSeo ObsoleteMusic
Announcing Obsolete Music by Juri Seo, an anachronistic mixture of old forms with modern harmonic and rhythmic devices. Seo utilizes her masterful command over traditional classical forms to build intricate, driving, and surprising compositions which are brilliantly executed by the energetic sextet, Latitude 49, who is known for blending the finesse of a classical ensemble with the drive and precision of a finely tuned rock band, via New Amsterdam Records.
Juri Seo is an Korean-American composer and pianist whose compositions merge many of the fascinating discoveries from the past century in particular the expanded timbral palette and unorthodox structure with functional tonality, counterpoint, and classical form.
The composer explains: “Ostinato is built on a basso continuo that outlines a tritone Relentless tempo modulations and allusions to jazz ultimately break the form Rondeau and Fantasia are likewise based on historical forms, with Rondeau drawing from a Medieval verse-refrain structure and Fantasia from a freer, formless style, often regarded as transcribed improvisation. Contrapuntal Forms is a set of three pieces that reengage with counterpoint, an art often considered out of fashion in contemporary music Fugue exists between 18th-century tonality and jazz harmony, creating a meta-stylistic discourse between the two Cantus Firmus sets the 11thcentury antiphon “O rubor sanguinis” by Hildegard von Bingen Canon sets voices in imitation, progressing through various intervals in the manner of the Goldberg Variations ”

Ukrainian Riot Grrl Trio ‘Death Pill’ Return With ‘Sologamy’ Their Much Anticipated Second Album. Two years on from their sensational debut, Ukrainian ‘Riot Grrls’ Mariana, Anastasiia and Nataliia, aka Death Pill are back.
And back in full force, locked and loaded with a mighty set of tunes, … as they put it. ‘A bold exploration of personal empowerment’. ‘SOLOGAMY’ is fierce, heavy and melodic.
The album’s 10 tracks mark a bold evolution in the band's sound and Death Pill really deliver with ferocity and belief through multiple gear changes and genres as if it were easy. Hardcore, punk, grunge, thrash, riot grrrl, emo, are just some of the touchstones this album moves through, and all with the accomplished ferocity and memorable melody the band introduced on their debut. There are cellos, piano’s, sound effects and ornate arrangements that open out their sonic palette, there’s a bit of pop and even a bit of prog. But rest assured … It's all pure ‘Death Pill’. Thematically ‘Sologamy’ is, at its core, a celebration.

A mix of metallic doomgaze, epic gothic soundscapes and post punk attitude. Loud and crushing, yet sharp enough to stick in your head for days.
There are two kinds of heavy bands: the ones that make a lot of noise and the ones that drag you somewhere you didn't know you needed to go. Cwfen (pronounced 'Coven') are the latter, and Sorrows is a record that doesn't just crush – it haunts long after the final note.
The allure of Cwfen’s sound lies in contrasts: the glacial ferocity of Amenra, with the velvet-and-razor vocals of King Woman, and the rotting grandeur of Type O Negative. It’s as hypnotic as it is harrowing, but somehow even better than the sum of those parts.
Since emerging from Glasgow's underground just 18 months ago, Cwfen's reputation is growing, selling out shows and pulling growing audiences into their doom-laden fever dream. Released in October, the band's debut single 'Reliks' was a hit with fans and critics, landing a spot on Kerrang!'s release of the week playlist. And rightly so. Their sound devours and delights in equal measure.

"The Isle Of Lewis is the largest such of the Outer Hebrides archipelago, and a place where myth and folklore are abundant, The Callanish Stones, a cruciform circle reckoned by tradition to be the forms of petrified giants who would not convert to Christianity, once prompted notable chronicler of the ancient Julian Cope to pronounce himself “Lashed by wind and rain but surrounded by vibe”.
This was where Holy Scum decided to take a pilgrimage for the recording of their second album proper for Rocket Recordings, All We Have Is Never. Frustrated by the physical and logistical challenges keeping the band members from collaborating, they decided the best way forward was at the residential Black Bay Studios on Great Bernera, a two hour plus ferry ride from anywhere. “The isolation of Black Bay was our salvation, a muchneeded cleanse after a year of relentless misfortune” reckons the band’s Peter Taylor. Taylor describes the Holy Scum approach jokingly as ‘No riffs’ yet this belies an ability to carve abstraction and minimalism into monolithic and ominous shapes. Whilst the band are as handy as ever with excoriating and ear-splitting experimentation - as on the feverish guitar scree that underpins the taut ‘Thieves’ - they also excel in a grittily vital charge as analogous to the ballsy kinetics of Fugazi and The Ex (the primal ‘I Am The Land’) as the overcast catharsis of Killing Joke and Voivod (the infectious ‘Witches’). “The title is a nod to the fact that everything ends - good, bad, ugly, beautiful “ reflects vocalist Mike Mare (Dälek) of their most focused work to date.
