On the back of the release of hit album Decius Vol. II (Splendour & Obedience), which landed at number two in the UK Official Dance Charts, our sweaty acid house poster boys have unleashed their ‘I Gave Birth 2 U’ digital single/EP. ‘I Gave Birth 2 U’ featured on the Chanel Autumn/Winter catwalk show at Paris Fashion Week, because those people know a thing or two about good taste. It’s accompanied by a couple of filthy reworks from the May brothers in their Medicine 8 guise. On Decius Vol. II (Splendour & Obedience): “My standout favourites of 2025 so far” Nick Grimshaw, BBC 6 Music “Decius will make you want to dance and seek daylight” The Guardian “Splendour & Obedience is a more voluptuous effort than the scratchy edges of Vol. I. It is party music for those frazzled by three consecutive nights consuming the hair, the tail, the whole of the dog” the Quietus - Album of the Week “You may feel the need to shower after listening” Brooklyn Vegan On Decius Vol. I: “A sordid thrill… It’s also the best album of the year” the Quietus “A loose amalgam of England’s most troublesome, wayward and wanton musicians. Decius gets the groove going in a different way, they kind of come at you out of the dark” Iggy Pop “There is sleaze running through Decius’ veins, though the kind of debauchery here is kept mainly on the dance-floor” Brooklyn Vegan “Harking back to the rawness of Chicago house music’s Black/LGBT roots - think Adonis’ ‘No Way Back’” DJ magazine

GRATEFUL DEAD:

Dick’s Picks Vol. 20—CAPITAL CENTRE, Landover, MD 9/25/76 ONONDAGA COUNTY WAR MEMORIAL, Syracuse, NY 9/28/76 (4-CD Set) STREET DATE: JULY 11, 2025 At a mere two songs short of two complete shows—and those two songs, “Bertha” and “It’s All Over Now,” were played at both shows, so they appear on the set at least once—Dick’s Picks Vol. 20 is one of the more jam-packed (or is that packed with jams?) entries in the series. But this volume has a lot more going for it than just five hours-plus of music—1976 marked the return of the band to the road after a 20-month hiatus with Mickey Hart back in tow for the first time in five years, and it is a newly rejuvenated outfit we hear playing a mix of the new (“Lazy Lightnin’,” “Supplication”) and old (“St. Stephen” and the rare “Cosmic Charlie,” which appears on the Landover show’s set list for the last time ever). Perhaps the most sublime moment is the transition from “Comes a Time” to “Eyes of the World” (and then to the out-of-nowhere “Orange Tango Jam”) during the second set of the Syracuse show, but both shows are full of sparkling performances propelled by the newly reunited Rhythm Devils. Though 1985 is reckoned as one of the better years for Dead tours in the ‘80s, for decades this particular Pick remained the only place to hear a show from that year. And it’s no wonder that the producers of the series selected this date; it offers an unusual song selection and strong performances throughout. “Stagger Lee,” “Comes a Time” and Dylan’s “She Belongs to Me” are all seldom-heard revivals peculiar to 1985 and receive sterling renditions, and Bob Weir’s rave-up on the rarely-performed “Gloria” caps the show in grand fashion. Collector types will also note that this show provides the only instance of “Lost Sailor” and “Saint of Circumstance” being separated from each other in a set. Disc three adds nearly 40 minutes of bonus material from a September 2, 1980 show at the Community War Memorial in Rochester, NY, and all 40 minutes are devoted to a sublime medley of “Space”/”Iko Iko”/”Morning Dew”/”Sugar Magnolia.” Late-period Dead at its best!

Sun Ra

Sleeping Beauty Strut proudly presents a new edition of one of Sun Ra's most celebrated albums, Sleeping Beauty, reissued in its original artwork for the first time. Originally released in 1979 on his independent Saturn label, Sleeping Beauty captures Sun Ra and his Arkestra at their most soulful and serene. A masterclass in cosmic jazz, the album blends lush grooves, celestial soul, and meditative funk with Ra’s singular spiritual vision — a sound both grounded and otherworldly. The album emerged during an extraordinarily fertile period for Sun Ra in late-‘70s New York. Between 1978 and 1982, Ra “occupied” Variety Recording Studios on West 42nd Street, often staging marathon sessions following late-night Arkestra gigs around the city — from the Village Vanguard to Sweet Basil and even a wedding in Central Park. These were not just recordings; they were rituals. Ra and his core players — John Gilmore, Marshall Allen, June Tyson, Michael Ray, and others — would begin sessions mid-morning, often continuing past midnight, much to the dismay of the studio owner. Out of this creative whirlwind came some of his most enduring work, including A Fireside Chat With Lucifer, On Jupiter, and Sleeping Beauty. Across its three tracks, Sleeping Beauty showcases the Arkestra’s gentler side. From the dreamy sway of “Springtime Again” to the funk-deep uplift of “Door Of The Cosmos” and the title track’s meditative drift, this is music that floats, beckons, and unfolds. It’s a record of hypnotic beauty and quiet power — cosmic jazz for dreamers and seekers alike. This new edition features a selected version of the hand-drawn original cover, embossed with the Sun Ra logo and housed in a heavyweight card sleeve. Liner notes come courtesy of Arkestra member Knoel Scott and Sun Ra authority Paul Griffiths. Remastered by Technology Works. “Music is a language. You see, it’s not notes — it’s a language of the spirit. That’s why it’s so important.” – Sun Ra

DISINIBLUD (RACHIKA NAYAR & NINA KEITH)

DISINIBLUD OVERVIEW Disiniblud, the thrilling new collaborative album project from the composers/producers/multiinstrumentalists Rachika Nayar and Nina Keith. Rachika and Nina meet on complementary but seemingly disparate musical grounds. On her 2022 breakout LP Heaven Come Crashing, Rachika departed from her usual ambient guitar in favor of maximalist synths, sub-bass, and flickers of Amen breaks. Her distinct fusion of post-rock and electronica earned her accolades as Pitchfork's Best New Music, on several best of the year lists (The New York Times, Stereogum, Fader, GQ, Bandcamp, etc), and as the opening act on tour with M83. Nina, meanwhile, is best known for her self-trained approach to composition, as evident on her 2019 debut MARANASATI 19111 and its delicate medley of cello, piano, clarinet, and flute, used to explore a personal history marked by community tragedy and paranormal incidents.

TRACKLISTING 1. Give-upping (ft. Julianna Barwick) 2. Blue Rags, Raging Wind (ft. Amigone) 3. Serpentine (ft. Cassandra Croft) 4. No more to see (ft. June McDoom) 5. [it could happen] 6. It's Change (ft. Willy Siegel, Katie Dey & Julianna Barwick) 7. Traces in the window (ft. ASPIDISTRAFLY) 8. whole30 Fight Club 9. Disiniblud 10. [as is most (bimbo it out)] 11. My flickering gift to you (ft. Tujiko Noriko)

On Disiniblud, the two’s self-described “wordless conversation,” orbits such themes as mortality, reinvention through destruction, and sublimating fractured histories into music—all resulting in a work that suggests sweeping transformation can come from embracing old wounds with childlike wonder. Nina envisions this as she and Rachika's younger selves packing a satchel, holding hands, and daring one another to run away into a place of "wounds and wonder," only to discover an unforeseeable magic in an amalgam of post-rock, glitchy indie electronica, ambient, and pop genres in this co-created realm. Disiniblud features guest appearances from Julianna Barwick, Tujiko Noriko, Cassandra Croft, ASPIDISTRAFLY, Katie Dey, June McDoom and Ponytail's Willy Siegel.

DJ Haram's debut album “Beside Myself” is about the survival of the spirit in day to day struggle. Following on from her collaboration with Moor Mother as 700 Bliss on “Nothing to Declare”, here she is joined by a swarm of collaborators, collectively navigating pain and rage, and in occasional moments of joyful respite, mocking the strife. Haram describes herself as a “multidisciplinary propagandist, contemporary anti-authoritarian Arab, gendered labor class, god fearing atheist” who makes “anti-format, audio propaganda, anti-lifestyle, immersive sonics”. Her music attests to this, as she brings in friends and collaborators, from MC's Armand Hammer, Bbymutha, SHA RAY, Moor Mother, and Dakn, through to co-producers August Fanon, Egyptian producer El Kontessa, and Jersey Club producer Kay Drizz, trumpeter Aquiles Navarro, and guitarist Abdul Hakim Bilal. It's immediately identifiable as her work, but simultaneously unclassifiable, finding equal space in its dusty live production for Jersey Club, punk noise, Central Asian and Middle Eastern Percussion, synths, 808's and lurking, rumbling bass. Often central to this is her own performance of unflinching sorrowful verses, comparable to the poets Audrey Lorde or Ai in tone and Kim Gordon in context, examining the material and the abstract in equal measure. Her grungy futurism offers no easy resolutions, yet the drama and catharsis it presents is rarely so defiantly delivered.

We Are Scientists: The Art of Indie Rock Evolution In an industry where bands routinely burst onto the scene with meteoric intensity only to fade just as quickly, We Are Scientists have quietly crafted one of alternative rock's most remarkable sustained careers. For over two decades, the New York-based outfit — comprising founding members Keith Murray and Chris Cain — has consistently delivered sharp, infectious indie rock, maintaining the rare ability to evolve without losing their essential DNA. Now, with their ninth studio album, Qualifying Miles, arriving July 18th, the band continues to defy expectations, this time by looking back even as they push forward. Qualifying Miles: A New Chapter Begins We Are Scientists are set to issue their highly anticipated ninth studio album, Qualifying Miles, on July 18, 2025, through beloved German indie Grönland Records. Grönland oversaw the band’s last three records in Europe, each time expanding the EU listenership, and this marks the first time since their debut that W.A.S. have handed over worldwide control to a single label. Bassist Chris Cain is confident: “Oh, nobody’s worried about Grönland.”The album finds Murray and Cain embracing a stripped-down, "band in a room" aesthetic that harkens back to the music that shaped their childhoods. Murray explains. "The crop songs we wrote for Qualifying Miles covered a huge range of genres, but somehow the songs that resonated them most with us all shared this vaguely 90s guitar rock sensibility.” Despite not setting out with a thematic framework, Murray discovered a common thread running through the new material: "It wasn't until we'd chosen them and I started doing some lyrical touchups that I realized a lot these songs hit upon similar themes: wistfulness for the past, a sort of melancholy nostalgia, that kind of thing.” In support of the new album, We Are Scientists have announced extensive touring for the coming year. The band will begin in Europe at the end of April, then on to the UK, with festivals in the summer. North American shows and further runs across the Atlantic will follow later in 2025. Artist: Nina Hagen Album: Personal Jesus Album re-release - on vinyl for the first time Release date: July 18th 2025 Label: Grönland Records new single and bonus track „I Am Born To Preach The Gospel”, video: https://youtu.be/D8uhhGZJTfs

To mark Nina Hagen's 70th birthday, her album “Personal Jesus” is being released on vinyl for the first time, including a bonus track - exactly fifteen years after the original release. The bonus track is entitled “I Am Born To Preach The Gospel” and is a cover version by Washington Phillips. With “Personal Jesus”, Nina Hagen dives deep into rock, blues and gospel in 2010. Raw, unpolished and full of intensity, she interprets songs about faith, resistance and redemption carried by her unmistakable voice, which burns in every line. A passionate, uncompromising work that has endured to this day. Now, 15 years after its first release - and on Nina Hagen's 70th birthday - the album produced by Paul Rössler is being reissued - for the first time on vinyl as limited edition as white-colored 180g vinyl in a gatefold artwork. Even back then, “Personal Jesus” was a courageous album - in the name of love, because God is love - which she loves to proclaim! Nina Hagen simply made a friend of the often strict zeitgeist, while pop exhausted itself in selfironization, she confessed to Jesus Christ, to gospel and to redemption; without cynicism, without distance. And yet or precisely because of this - with the dazzling radicalism that has always characterized her. Her interpretation of Depeche Mode's title song - once a gloomy commentary on the appropriation of the divine through private projection becomes an ecstatic affirmation with Hagen: yes, the personal Jesus is possible. And he sings, shouts and prays in tongues. You can listen to this album as a curious footnote to an eccentric career. Or you can recognize it for what it really is: a spiritual manifesto in the guise of pop, the testimony of a seeker who has found her God not only in the silence, but also in the noise of this world.

Earth - WEM Dominator (Live in London NW1, 2016)

“Dylan Carlson is a paragon of guitar control” Pitchfork

Seattle drone-rock titans Earth release their latest live document, WEM Dominator (Live in London NW1, 2016), an unrelenting display of the band’s seismic force, recorded during their performance at London’s KOKO in 2016. Sharing the bill with legendary heavyweights Neurosis, Earth delivered a set of hypnotic intensity, crushing volume, and towering, glacial beauty. Artist: Earth Title: WEM Dominator (Live in London NW1, 2016) Release date: 2025-07-18 2025-05-23 Label: Fire Records

For over three decades, Dylan Carlson and his ever-evolving ensemble have been crafting tectonic soundscapes that defy convention, forging a path between meditative drone and colossal doom-laden riffs. WEM Dominator is an album of mesmeric modal patterns, it’s a recording that captures the trio’s intricate, slowly evolving euphoria in a period when their experimentation swerved through endless possibilities. From the creeping grandeur of “The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull” to the ominous crawl of “Even Hell Has Its Heroes,” the album presents Earth at their most immersive and powerful.

This record reasserts Earth’s mastery of atmosphere and weight, where every note feels tectonic, and silence itself becomes an instrument of crushing tension. It is a hypnotic, stripped down sonic symphony embracing influences as wide ranging as the Velvet Underground, Terry Riley and La Monte Young, a visceral slow-motion reading of the original sound that inspired Sun O))) and the generation that followed.

Imagine The Velvet Underground’s ‘Sweet Nuthin’ fed through a spirit glass; a super slow incantation haunted by the ghosts of the band’s 40 transient members. Mystical folkisms cluster as the songs come in and out of focus and their improvisational slew matures. Recorded at Supreme Reality studios in Portland over the summer of 2005; Tom Greenwood had just returned to the City following a few years of touring and began recording over several marathon sessions.

The Lemonheads Deep End / Sad Cinderella (Limited 12” Single)

The Lemonheads tease new material with this super limited 12” single. Rekindling the near-perfect pop for which they’re famed, the single focusses on the light and dark balance of their impending new album ‘Love Chant’ that will be released on Fire Records this Fall. Beautifully ill-balanced, ‘Deep End’ and ‘Sad Cinderella’ traverse the highs and lows of life, perfectly illustrating Evan Dando’s esoteric musical taste. ‘Deep End’ is a churning riff monster with light-the-blue-touch-paper guitar breaks by J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr, a compulsive fist-in-the-air piece of timeless punk pop, the perfect soundtrack for bumming a cigarette. Cowritten with Australian sparring partner Tom Morgan of Smudge and featuring Juliana Hatfield, it signals a return down under for the band with several antipodean live dates scheduled this May.

Artist: The Lemonheads Title: Deep End / Sad Cinderella Release date: 2025-07-18 Label: Fire Records

Meanwhile, the flipside is straight out of the Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris songbook; a cover of the late, great Townes Van Zandt’s ‘Sad Cinderella’, it’s a song for the romantics, a tearjerker that could have made its way onto Neil Young’s ‘Harvest’, or any aching George Jones opus; filled with regret and remorse, it’s a beautifully brittle duet between Evan and Juliana Hatfield.

The Scream, Siouxsie & the Banshees' first album, was released late enough in the punk era to bear some claim as the first post-punk album. Siouxsie was clearly the focus of the band, with her unique vocal style and lyrics, but the real star, we've always known, was John McKay, who wrote most of the album's music (as well as singles like "Hong Kong Garden"), creating a wholly new guitar sound - harsh and brittle, yet melodically intoxicating . . . best articulated by a somewhat confounded Steve Albini years later ". . . only now people are trying to copy it, and even now nobody understands how that guitar player got all that pointless noise to stick together as songs". McKay's influence lives on; many of the most influential guitarists of the past four decades credit him as a major influence - Geordie from Killing Joke, Jim Reid of The Jesus And Mary Chain, U2's The Edge, Thurston Moore, Johnny Marr and even the two guitarists The Cure's Robert Smith and Magazine's John McGeoch - who followed him in The Banshees. McKay's burgeoning status as the anti-guitar hero was halted when he and Banshees drummer Kenny Morris - at odds with Siouxsie and bassist Steve Severin - fled the band just after the start of a tour supporting the group's second album, Join Hands. It was a weekly music paper scandal, later the subject of a BBC documentary, and Siouxsie's vitriol working its way into the lyrics of a later Banshees b-side, "Drop Dead / Celebration". Aside from a solitary single on Marc Riley's In Tape label nearly a decade later, no music was heard from McKay again. So it comes as a major surprise to learn of a pile of excellent recordings made in the years just after he left The Banshees, unheard by all but a very few, some of which feature drummer Kenny Morris, plus Mick Allen from Rema Rema, Matthew Seligman of the Soft Boys and longer-term collaborator Graham Dowdall and John's wife Linda . . . the latter three of whom now all sadly deceased. Sixes And Sevens is an historic lost album. Brazenly genius and bearing fair claim as the lost treasure of the postpunk era, the album collects eleven studio tracks, carefully mastered from original tapes.

A Profound Non-Event, the debut album by Sydney-based three piece Daily Toll, comprises 11 songs traversing three years of forged friendships, collaborative experimentation and a shared love of growing through words and song. Those attuned to the ever-vibrant Australian underground may already be well familiar with Daily Toll, their consistent live presence since their inception in 2021 embroidered by a handful of (mostly) home-recorded, (mostly) digital self-releases that have steadily accumulated an appreciative following. Initially the project of self taught musician, poet & artist Kata SzászKomlós and Jasper Craig-Adams, and expended to a three piece with the more recent addition of friend Tom Stephens(he/him), Daily Toll represents the union of three unique creative dispositions, of relationships blooming through the push and pull of creative practice. Mapping the band’s existence through their recorded output is to bear witness to the flux of three people learning to respond to one another and gently ossify into a collective vision that at once calls to mind folk song intimacy, post-punk dynamics and the artful poeticism of an adjacent Flying Nun legacy.

Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity Open Released in 1967, Open marked a bold debut for Brian Auger & The Trinity, featuring the dynamic vocals of Julie Driscoll. Music and its makers were rapidly evolving in ‘67, the UK's Jazz and R&B scenes were being influenced by pop and psychedelia and socially, musicians of many styles found common ground in London’s clubs like The Cromwellian and The Scotch Of St James where the The Beatles, US legends Wilson Pickett and Jimi Hendrix mingled with the capitals jazzers and pop stars, often loudly jamming together in even louder 'Lord Byron' shirts. 'Open' fully embraced this spirit by fusing together those genres and attitudes of the era. From the outset Auger displays his jazz rooted approach on the A side with 'In and Out' and 'Isola Natale' (later covered by one of his American jazz heroes Richard ‘Groove’ Holmes). Both showcase the Trinity's musicianship and Brian's improvisational flair. Auger himself takes on vocal duties on the raucous ‘Black Cat’, a track that became a club hit. Open is marked by its eclecticism; 'Lament for Miss Baker' is a tender, piano ballad influenced by Duke Ellington, reflecting Auger’s jazz and classical influences whilst 'Goodbye Jungle Telegraph' is a wild and crazy percussive freak out. Brian displayed not only his virtuosity but also his surrealist sense of humour with bizarre sound effects, inspired by Spike Milligan's The Goons' radio show interspersed between the tracks. Julie Driscoll’s arrival on the album’s B side brings a sharp shift in tone. Her smoky, emotive vocals inject a soulful depth, notably on covers of Otis Redding & Carla Thomas hit 'Tramp', Aretha's 'Save Me' and The Staples Singers ‘Why Am I Treated So Bad". With original numbers 'Break It Up' and 'A Kind Of Love In' we hear the Auger / Driscoll pop infused R&B at its very best, whilst the version of Donovan’s 'Season of the Witch' stretches out into a slow-burning epic. In 2025, Open is viewed as a cult classic and testament to a unique period when genre boundaries were fluid and artistic risk-taking was the norm. Brian Auger & The Trinity’s debut captures the adventurous energy of the late 1960s. 58 years later, its importance in the development of British jazz fusion and progressive bands that followed is undeniable, with The Charlatans Tim Burgess recently commenting on Auger's Instagram that The Trinity were a 'huge influence'.

Slikback releases "Attrition" – a densely detailed, cinematic exploration of sound packed with intricate rhythms and gleaming textures. Slikback’s "Attrition" marks his first full-length album for Planet Mu, delivering an immersive melding of cinema and game sound design with tough dance music. It's like a sci-fi film for the ears, exploring a chain of events with dark atmospheres and dramatic pacing; trapdoors and jump scares for your ears. These contrasts and the dense painterly colour of his sounds give it a beastly beauty. The album came to life during a period of transition, while waiting for a visa after recently moving to Poland from Kenya, where he grew up. With this unexpected pause in travel, Slikback found himself working at a slower, more deliberate pace. Writing for a label instead of self-releasing also introduced new dynamics, like feedback and structured release schedules. Rather than feeling restricted, he saw this process as a blessing. In a happy and reflective headspace—newly married and welcoming a newborn child— he was able to fully develop his compositions. “I was finally able to explore ideas to a point where I didn’t feel the need to change anything,” he shares. "Attrition" is the result of that creative freedom.

While "Attrition" nods to familiar genres, drawing on elements of Gqom, Dubstep, Tech-Step, and Hardcore Techno, it pushes them into new territory, shaping high-tech, intricate compositions. “I worked on the tracks back and forth, drastically transforming some from their original sketches,” Slikback explains. “I wanted to create a journey within each track, like something alien emerging from emptiness—beauty from chaos.” The album opens gently before diving into fast-paced 140bpm sounds, reminiscent of earlier Planet Mu releases. Midway through, "Taped" shifts the energy with a shimmering, 160bpm rolling bassline. As the album progresses, its intensity builds. The music grows darker, faster, and more unpredictable, culminating in a final track that bursts apart in a thrilling, chaotic climax. A standout moment in Slikback’s career, "Attrition" is a masterclass in sound design and vision. Strange yet beautiful, intense yet rewarding—it’s the most strikingly unique album you’ll hear all year. PLANET MU RECORDS WWW. rRoxymore - Juggling Dualities As rRoxymore, Hermione Frank has been exploring the outer edges of the dance floor and producing music that goes beyond traditional genre boundaries for more than a decade. In that time she has covered plenty of ground from caustic and abrasive techno to long-form and immersive grooves, always with a focus on contrasting tempo, texture and tone. On previous albums she intertwined the electronic and the acoustic with elements of psychedelia and jazz. With Juggling Dualities, Frank takes a sideways look at New Age and Wellness culture. Writing the album came about after many months of being unable to create during a complicated personal time which left her lacking inspiration, feeling creatively stuck yet emotionally uprooted. What helped was distance - taking time and space to disconnect from the struggle. That brought a different rhythm to life and a fresh perspective that allowed exploration without any expectations. A six-week surge of intense creativity followed in which the majority of the album was written. As she explains, "The record represents a journey of reconnection that conveys an underlying message of hope and healing at its core. I think it is my most honest work to date." Initially conceived as a New Age project but with a signature personal twist and some subtle humour, there is a familiarity to Juggling Dualities. It is warm and comforting with a sound palette that is refined but familiar - there are soothing signifiers and organic designs that nod to the motifs of New Age but passed through a more contemporary lens. Juggling Dualities is an invitation to reconnect with yourself. It's music that encourages you to take a pause, be in the moment and reflect on the fact that no matter what challenges come your way, they shall eventually pass.

HAMID AL-SAADI MAQAM AL-IRAQ Hamid Al-Saadi: Maqam Al-Iraq Hamid Al-Saadi (b.1958, Iraq), is the only living singer who has mastered the entire Iraqi Maqam repertoire. Inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Heritage list, the Iraqi Maqam is a repertoire of long-form compositions of sung poetry that has been passed down orally for generations. Maqam Al-Iraq consists of two Maqams composed by Al-Saadi, Al-Iraq and Sa’idi, which are the first additions to the repertoire in over a century, Maqam Qazzaz, which has never been recorded, and Maqam Al-Mansuri, one of the most sophisticated and developed Maqam compositions. Each Maqam is followed by a pesteh, a lighthearted popular song that includes communal singing. The instrumental parts are composed and/or arranged by Amir ElSaffar. Maqam Al-Iraq is Hamid’s first release since 1999, and is one of a handful commercially released albums of the genre. It is also the first release on Maqam Records, a label dedicated to traditional and contemporary Maqaminspired music. The Iraqi Maqam Maqām is the lore of Iraq, representing its rich history and pluralistic society through melodies and poetry. Some elements are from the Abbassid era (8th-13th centuries AD), Baghdad’s glorious age, while others date back further to ancient Mesopotamia, Sumer and Babylon. The Iraqi Maqam is part of a larger network of Maqam traditions found throughout North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia. The music is meditative and spiritual, sung in both sacred and secular contexts. The latter, represented on this record, includes instruments such as the santur (hammered dulcimer), joza (spike fiddle), tablah (goblet drum), and other percussion.

Al-Saadi grew up in Baghdad during a time of economic prosperity and a cultural renaissance, when Maqam performances occurred regularly in concert halls, coffee houses, and private homes. From a young age, he was drawn to the Maqam through his love of Arabic poetry and eventually began attending performances and acquiring cassettes locally. He was most drawn to Yusuf Omar (1914–1986), the great virtuoso and most recorded Maqam singer of the 20th century, and Mohammed Al-Gubbanchi (1904-1989), likely the most prolific and influential Maqam singer in history.

In 2018, ElSaffar brought Al-Saadi to the U.S. with funding from an Artist Protection Fund Fellowship. NIGHT MOVES DOUBLE LIFE OVERVIEW Double Life, the fourth Night Moves album and first in six years, is a cozy and cool LP built largely from a string of very rough breaks that John Pelant and Night Moves have navigated in recent years. There was the unexpected death of a father-in-law, then a drummer whose skin sloughed off during recording due to contact dermatitis. There were friends arrested for making mistakes in troubled times and assorted pals struggling with sobriety and sanity. And there was, once again, the ever-vexing question for artists about when they’re supposed to step into the responsibilities of adulthood and maybe away from the lifelong compulsion to create, especially as Pelant started thinking seriously about marriage for the first time in his life. Pelant is the sort of songwriter who starts with the music—inspired of late by Glen Campbell and Bobby Caldwell, Cleaners from Venus and early ’90s country, Panda Bear and (as ever) Gram Parsons—and then writes lyrics only after he’s sat with the tune a spell. But this time, these songs are direct documents of Pelant’s life as he searches for silver linings or at least valuable meanings during a moment when very little seemed golden. Double Life is about moving through, not moving on. TRACKLISTING 1. Trying To Steal A Smile 2. Daytona 3. Hold On To Tonight 4. Almost Perfect 5. State Sponsored Psychosis 6. Ring My Bell 7. Pelant started writing Double Life in the Minneapolis duplex he shares with his fiancée, Tasha. But those early and sometimes-forlorn drafts rightfully bummed her out, especially since some of it spoke of her own woes. So Pelant started treating Night Moves’ little rehearsal room— stuck in a grim industrial zone of the city, surrounded by garbage dumps and foundry fumes— as an office, showing up with workmanlike diligence to keep crafting demos. That proved to be a tough hang, too: Separated by paper-thin walls, Pelant soon figured out his drug-addled neighbor not only lived there but would also erupt into near-daily shouting matches with his partner. He’d spill Big Gulp cups of piss in their shared hallway. It was worrying, but Pelant kept at it, anyway. He’d drive around, delivering hard liquor and wine at his new day job, where Def Leppard’s “Photograph” seemed to play always, the hit hammering through his hangovers. He pondered cycles of addiction and thought a lot about death, apt since that gig was next to another warehouse that sold funeral supplies. He listened to works in progress as he jockeyed the booze, working until he and the band felt they had the core of a record ready. Again, not as easy as it sounds: Night Moves cycled through two producers who had first sounded like dream collaborators but just didn’t fit their vibe. Once again, Night Moves opted to return to their own practice space, recording the bulk of the album there after capturing basic tracks at Minnesota’s legendary Pachyderm. The decision afforded the band, for the first time, the challenge and luxury of producing themselves, of making every decision about tone and arrangement and timing before passing the songs to Woods sonic mastermind Jarvis Taveniere for mixing and co-production. Night Moves has a repeated joke when they’re on the road, driving from town to town in their bruised van: “I can’t believe I have to do this again,” they say, a reference to the surrealist repetition of shows, parties, hangovers, and long hauls that define touring. That line shows up during “This Time Tomorrow,” a could-have-been Petty hit updated with the malaise and wanderlust of modern life. “I can’t believe I have to do this again, oh this again, this time tomorrow,” Pelant sings alongside Charles Murlowski’s mocking riff. “Laughing at the joke, but the joke’s my life.” It can feel that way for all of us sometimes, right? But on Double Life, Night Moves does not retreat from the struggles and complexities of life. They, instead, double down with songs that stare them in the face and turn forward on their own terms.

OVERVIEW

RELEASE DATE • 07.25.2025 FILE UNDER • P / ELECTRONIC

Following the release of his new collaborative album Tall Tales with Thom Yorke, a 2LP vinyl repress of Mark Pritchard’s previous solo album Under The Sun will be available on 25 July via Warp Records. Originally released in 2016, Under The Sun is one story told in chapters and, as with any good story, the spell is only maintained if you don’t skip to the end. Pritchard, as usual, defies easy categorisation and that is what gives depth and nuance to this work. He draws on the sounds and influences genetically coded in his musical DNA; ambient, nu-wave, avant-garde electronics and folk; but reimagines them through an otherworldly filter that cements Under The Sun somewhere in the future, rather than the past. The album features contributions from peers and friends including Thom Yorke, Linda Perhacs, Bibio, and Beans, and explores themes of beauty, desolation, and longing for home.

I LOVE PEOPLE

CORY HANSON Like a sweet spring breeze after a long, cruel winter, Cory Hanson’s blowing through town again. And like the wind, I Love People comes from parts unknown. Need a ride? Long as you’re ready to find yourself wherever it dies down, jump on! Despite all the complications of life here in Central Casting 2025, Cory and the boys are happier than ever to be playing music at its most beautiful for ALL the people: eminent hipsters bellied up to the bar alongside the ropers, riders and all the other jokers for whom freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose or do.

Followers of Cory’s twin arcs as solo singer and Wand member will be intrigued to learn that the lineup here is the same band that recorded last year’s Vertigo. Yep, Wand — their Masters of Unbounded Space robes traded in for Wrecking Crew trucker’s caps, as they reel out licks both tasty and smooth, like chopsmeisters of yore. That’s Robbie Cody co-producing behind the desk, Evan Backer playing bass and arranging strings and horns, Evan Burrows on drums and percussion and Cory on piano, guitars and voices and songs. Travelin’ light and puttin' up dry, I Love People bugs out to the what-thefuck?-ness on the edge of town spied now and again on Cory’s previous solos, Pale Horse Rider and Western Cum. Here though, the simmering shades of Rider’s quiet horror and the bursts of Cum’s cartoonish, gun-slinger bravado have given way to an ever-more impartial view of life on the ground, tinted in gossamer sepia and other nostalgic tones. Written over the past several annums, Cory’s songs ensnare the 70s singer-songwriter in a feedback loop, drawing additional inspiration from the indelible everyman melodies of the American Songbook. With gilded threads and emboldened needling, I Love People’s songs are rendered with immediacy and a deep-pile Hollywood production sound that radiates affluence and comfort, even in the darkest and coldest nights way out beyond the range of any signal. Placed and displaced among gorgeously outfitted musical arrangements, I Love People’s people are kin to their threadbare folk forbears. Song by song, their occupations, social positions and dispositions unravel like silk into the wind. While they perform, Cory loiters backstage, gently pulling at the curtain to reveal silly details hidden in plain sight inside America’s broken heart. It doesn’t come as a surprise, and it’s not strictly funny, either: a giddy mash of the two, the delirium that comes from finding what you think is "true" is someone else's "false." When maps won’t help you find out where you are anymore, you’re as normal and horrible as the next person, playing out your days in a place of constant activity with your parallax view progressing invisibly into a limbo beyond the horizon. That’s your freedom for you, and it might be more sad, more terrifying — if it weren’t so much fun! Even though their subject won’t stop squirming, Cory and his merry men have constructed a timeless still life with I Love People, simply by living for the fun and love of it all. Just like the rest of us!

BLUE CHOPSTICKS BC35 LP STREET DATE: JULY 25, 2025 NO EXPORT TO UK/EU, AUSTRALIA, NZ & JAPAN, ALL OTHER SALES PERMITTED.

TRACK LISTING: BIRD OF PREY BEATEN BACK (10:49) PILLOWS PLUMPED FOR THE GUESTS (8:58) IN VIVO RECEPTOR (9:57) GRAVITY DOES ITS WORST (11:50)

SELLING POINTS: First album by killer don’t-call-’em-a-supergroup of Grubbs, Hennies, Veliotis, and Unami. For fans of acclaimed recent albums by Gastr del Sol, Squanderers, MMMD, Wovenland Deep drones, impossibly rich textures: minimalism at its most generous and welcoming

Bitterviper is the brand-new quartet of Nikos Veliotis (cello), Taku Unami (synthesizer), Sarah Hennies (percussion), and David Grubbs (guitar, piano), four individuals who separately are responsible for some of the most striking and wildly idiosyncratic music of the past couple of decades—not to mention the duo collaborations between Grubbs and Unami (the albums Comet Meta and Failed Celestial Creatures) and Veliotis and Grubbs (The Harmless Dust). Athens-based Nikos Veliotis set Bitterviper into motion with four overdubbed pieces of dense psychoacoustic marvels on the cello; Grubbs responded with characteristically subtle tracery on piano, guitar, and lap steel; Unami weighed in electronically from Tokyo to mysteriously thicken both the plot and the low end; and Hennies applied her compositional gifts to structure the whole thing with an Occam’s Razor approach to percussion. But once you drop the needle on Bitterviper, its origin story becomes ancient history; you’re suddenly in the presence of an ensemble that sounds like no other and for whom there are no false steps. It’s all fair game when this is how you choose to play; Bitterviper is a salvo of confidence and conviction, and this is only the beginning. David Grubbs is Distinguished Professor of Music at Brooklyn College and The Graduate Center, CUNY. His books include Good night the pleasure was ours and Records Ruin the Landscape: John Cage, the Sixties, and Sound Recording. Grubbs was a member of Gastr del Sol, Bastro, and Squirrel Bait, and has performed with Tony Conrad, Pauline Oliveros, Luc Ferrari, Will Oldham, Loren Connors, Jan St. Werner, The Red Krayola, and many others. Sarah Hennies is a composer and percussionist based in upstate New York whose work is concerned with a variety of musical, sociopolitical, and psychological issues including queer & trans identity, psychoacoustics, and the social and neurological conditions underlying creative thought. She is primarily a composer of acoustic chamber music, but is also active in improvisation, film, and performance art. She is the recipient of a 2024 United States Artists Fellowship, a 2019 Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award, a 2016 fellowship in music/sound from the New York Foundation for the Arts, and was a participant in the 2024 Whitney Biennial. She is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music at Bard College. Taku Unami’s work is influenced by science fiction, supernatural horror and weird fiction. He’s the composer of film scores for directors including Isao Okishima and Takeshi Furusawa, was half (with Toshiya Tsunoda) of the group Wovenland, is one-third of the group Hontatedori, and has collaborated with, among others, Annette Krebs, Radu Malfatti, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Jarrod Fowler, and Graham Lambkin. Nikos Veliotis founded Mohammad with ILIOS and Coti K. (renamed MMMD in 2015). The project has fifteen releases to date on Antifrost, PAN, Improved Sequence, and Modal Analysis. In the 1990s he developed an experimental practice, exploring image and sound, mainly through the cello (which he destroyed during the notorious “Cello Powder” intermedia performance in Glasgow in March 2009); he also performed in numerous groups, most notably CRANC (with Angharad and Rhodri Davies) and Looper (with Ingar Zach and Martin Küchen).

Originally released in 2010, The Body’s All The Waters Of The Earth Turn To Blood is a watershed album that changed the landscape of heavy music. Buoyed by the eclectic cast of musicians, from the undeniably potent collaboration with The Assembly of Light Choir as led by now longtime The Body collaborator Chrissy Wolpert, to guest contributors that include members of Dead Times, Fang Island, Lichens (aka Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe), Human Beast, and many more. The album’s singularly bleak, yet beautiful atmosphere not only set the tone for The Body’s career in breaking the mold, but set a new standard for what extreme music could do. All The Waters rightfully broke The Body, the duo of Lee Buford and Chip King, out from the underground and was met with acclaim from across a wide spectrum. Pitchfork’s Grayson Haver Currin said of the record: “The rare album that feels truly dangerous. As it crushes and collides doom metal, harsh noise, industrial rock, and gospel singing into one mean mess, it seems to obey no rules but its own. The result is a singular, explosive masterpiece.” NPR’s Lars Gotrich put it in his 2010 Top 10 list, calling it “the most surreal doom-metal record of 2010” and The Quietus called it the year’s “best record on the fringes of metal.” Following the album’s release and subsequent tours, which sometimes included the entire Assembly of Light Choir, The Body established themselves as a permanent fixture of forward-thinking artists and a reliably overwhelming force, both on record and in live settings. All The Waters also helped spark the duo’s penchant for collaboration, which they then solidified across dozens of releases, from collaborations with Braveyoung to BIG|BRAVE, Thou, Full of Hell, Uniform, and beyond. The new reissue for All The Waters is packaged as a double LP, including a whole new Side D, which is composed of bonus material never before pressed to vinyl. The choral voices, returning here and there, are the only ray of hope: the Body’s own singing amounts to weedy, apocalyptic howls, barely clearing the din of their processional stomps. It’s an experience, this record, written in big riffs and celestial choirs and digital static.” - The New York Times

GENRE: Electronic/Alternative FILE UNDER: “M” for Manslaughter 777 RELEASE DATE: 25-July-2025 NO EXPORT

Manslaughter 777 are powerhouses of forward-thinking rhythmic music and production. The duo, composed of drummers/programmers Lee Buford (The Body, Sightless Pit, Dead Times, Everyone Asked About You) and Zac Jones (MSC, Nothing, Braveyoung), combine their prowess as percussionists and producers into beat-centric music that delights in turning unexpected sounds into razor sharp rhythms. Buford and Jones, along with engineer/producer Seth Manchester of Machines with Magnets (The Body, Model Actriz, Liturgy), have collaborated for nearly two decades, consistently shattering genre boundaries and redefining the role of the studio in the process. God’s World uses innovative sound sampling to create expansive sonics driven by complex rhythms. The resulting album’s infectious grooves are both celebratory and irreverent. The duo deftly interweave their own playing into field recordings and synthesized drums. The taut pieces blur the boundaries between acoustic and electronic instruments, samples and performances. “It’s kind of strange to be making music like this using acoustic sounds,” Jones continues, “but I think that adds a special element to it, sampling our own playing and being very meticulous about the sounds we get out of those.” “Power in the Blood” turns a ping-ponging hip hop beat into a throbbing House thump. “Silk Barricade”s dub-gone-jungle drop is met with an industrial breakdown where “Pulling A Truck Up A Hill”’s afro-latin groove leaves more room to breathe. Overblown 808s and steady tambourine speckle the slow-mo “Child Of (featuring MSC)” and a sine-wave bass lilts across the live kit on “Luv.” On God’s World, kaleidoscopic revelations reveal a rhythmic approach unbound by expectations. Buford and Jones are willing to completely shift gears within one short piece or to allow individual percussive elements to subtly transform the landscape of the beat. Manslaughter 777 have their own unique cadence, built on a deep affection for beat music, but untethered by any adherence to one specific style or set of rules. The duo imbue their music with a sinewy pulse and sense of dynamic care that lends a humanity to their unyielding arrangements. God’s World is an album whose electrifying turns and gripping compounds, in pursuit of lush, incendiary grooves, is a thrilling and joyous expressive delight.

The way this thing knocks, you just know the guy behind the boards was feeling it.” - The Quietus “Playfulness gets subdued by tension, exciting vibes infected by discomfort. Just be careful about getting lost in the rhythm—it might swallow you whole.” - Treble “True electronic body music...the detail and precision of the beats here is key, a real care and attention to the strafed snares and rippling breakbeaks that reward headphone immersion.” The Wire

Brian Auger's Oblivion Express Straight Ahead Released in 1974, Straight Ahead saw The Oblivion Express continuing their exploration of jazz fusion, with Steve Ferrone on drums, Barry Dean on bass, Jack Mills on guitar, Lennox Langton on congas. Critically well-received, it hit various Billboard charts simultaneously, the magazine praised the album, stating: the album was "excellent in development and inventiveness". The opening track, "Beginning Again," sets the tone with its up tempo Latin feel, driven by Langton's congas and Ferrone's dynamic drumming whilst Auger's electric piano work simply shines. "Bumpin' On Sunset," a cover of Wes Montgomery's classic, allows Auger to delve deep into improvisation, moody and atmospheric, it pays homage to the original while adding Auger's unique touch, so much so that Montgomery's widow wrote to Auger some years after the guitarist's sad passing stating that it was Wes' favourite version of the much covered tune. The title track, "Straight Ahead" brings a funkier vibe to the album and highlights the band's versatility and ability to shift genres effortlessly. "Change," continues this exploration, blending rock elements with jazz improvisation, and Auger's absolute command over the Hammond organ. The album concludes with "You'll Stay In My Heart," a soulful ballad that adds a touch of introspection.. Critics noted the album's smooth fusion of genres. One reviewer described it as "a minor masterpiece of incredibly engaging and melodic keyboard-centric Jazz-Rock Fusion," Another review praised the improved rendition of "Bumpin' On Sunset," noting it as "the best reason to own this recording," In 2025. Straight Ahead still stands as a testament to Brian Auger's commitment to musical exploration and genre-blending and captures a moment in the 1970s when boundaries between jazz, rock, and funk were being actively challenged and redefined. Straight Ahead remains a significant work in the landscape of jazz fusion and cements Auger's reputation as a trailblazer ahead of his time.

JOHNSON

Indianapolis-based Leon Todd Johnson has been recording under the moniker Airport People since 2020. Under that name, Johnson’s engaging neoclassical work flirted with Windham Hill/ECM jazz inflections while incorporating a deep melodic sensibility that serves as a throughline across his recorded work. As the name reflects, Airport People’s work harnessed Johnson’s memories of traveling around the world with his family, supporting his civil rights leader grandfather’s work in Africa—a state he described as being “in between where we’re going and where we were, and we don’t have much to say.” Johnson’s second record for Whited Sepulchre Records finds him once again inspired by travel, but as the name change suggests, his work is no longer defined by the space between one place and another. Instead, it focuses on traveling outward and finding home within oneself—both philosophically and musically. Johnson has long been drawn to Ryuichi Sakamoto’s work. While writing songs for this record, he returned to several late-era Sakamoto pieces like Andata and various soundtracks for films, especially Minamata. With this music in mind and having begun a practice of Zen meditation, Johnson traveled to Japan for a longawaited trip. Upon returning home, he began compiling these four songs when he heard an interview with Mine Somi Kubose about the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. The interview was recorded in 1977 at the Buddhist Temple of Chicago by Chungmoo Choi and preserved in the Library of Congress; it was exactly what the album needed. Mornings have always featured prominently in Johnson’s work. From Nine Mornings—his previous record for Whited Sepulchre Records— compiled his morning musical sketches into fully fleshed-out songs. Many listeners have described his work as quintessential morning music, accompanying their first cup of coffee or tea. For this most recent record, Johnson reflected on the four principles of the Japanese tea ceremony: Wa (和): Harmony or unity Kei (敬): Respect or reverence Sei (清): Purity or cleanliness Jaku (寂): Tranquility or silence In these principles, Johnson found an analog to the tracks he was recording. Each seemed to embody a principle as he listened back, weaving samples from the interview throughout.

Distro Contact: Lori Miller, lori@redeyeworldwide.com, 877-733-3931 x216

The four tracks on wa kei sei jaku build on the lushness of From Nine Mornings. The peaceful piano melody of “wa” is met with some of the most expressive bass work Johnson has recorded—muted runs blend with strings to explore harmony. “Kei” builds into a serene crescendo with arpeggiated piano and violin counter-melodies, while “jaku”, as the name suggests, lets piano melodies hang in the air with just enough time to land. Connecting to the theme more personally, Johnson incorporated field recordings of various tea house gardens from his trip to Japan, as well as sounds from his own morning tea ritual into the compositions. Percussive elements, roomy scrapes, and the tinkling of metal against china all capture his daily practice—one shared by fans who use his music to ease into their days. The album will be celebrated with a collaborative release from Cincinnati-based Wendigo Tea, who will offer a limited-edition blend inspired by the record. Since recording wa kei sei jaku, Johnson has become a father. It’s not lost on him that amid the world-upending experience of first-time parenthood, he’s stepping away from a moniker and confidently imbuing these songs with his full self—as much as the self can ever be fully known.

BLACK VINYL

The cognitive dissonance between our personal comforts and collective needs, the loving of the place and the hatred for the empire—these are the exact things Clifford’s Golden Caravan is about. After a half decade of establishing themselves as one of the most promising bands in Boston’s underground scene, Clifford have hit their stride. Inspired equally by local legends like Pile and Horse Jumper of Love and groups carrying forth the torch of Heartland rock (Big Thief, Waxahatchee), Golden Caravan merges the burnished, melodic folk of Clifford’s past recorded work with the feral force of their live shows. It’s a work of paradox, where the harmonic feedback is a thing of beauty and the acoustic guitars bludgeon with blunt force.

HAUSU MOUNTAIN

HAUSMO DOUG & HAUSMO MAX

HAUSUMOUNTAIN @gMAIL.COM Hausu Mountain continues the HausLive series of live show recordings that capture some of the headiest moments in Chicago underground music. On HausLive 4, we rewind the clock approximately one year to May 3rd, 2024 at Constellation, where the all-star Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet (featuring Wendy Eisenberg, Ava Mendoza, and Shane Parish) made their barn-burning Chicago debut. The series channels the spirit of the informal bootlegging and tape trading of audience recordings as pioneered by the community surrounding the Grateful Dead, honing in on the raw live energy and in-the-moment emotions that can make any show stand out in the stream of time. Selected as part of the label’s ongoing collaboration with the prolific Chicago taper and HausMo mega-friend Joel Berk, HausLive 4 catches the Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet in a sublime state of tour-hardened synergy with one another as they tear through the four-string guitar compositions that Orcutt wrote for his album Music for Four Guitars (Palilalia Records, 2022) with dialed-in fingers-on-fretboard precision, while also letting those songs evolve into flights of improvisation and extend into solo and duo passages led by each of the four guitarists. As Orcutt says on tape during one of the show’s interludes, “that record is thirty minutes; this show is an hour, so we’re improvising.” The resulting freewheeling moments combine with the rigidity of Orcutt’s meticulous four-guitar compositions to form a program of music that draws power in equal measure from the forces of chance and discipline. Bill Orcutt began his career in his hometown of Miami as the guitarist of the influential noise band Harry Pussy in the early 90s — a band whose vision of uncompromising DIY experimentation and brain-shattering performance art presented on their extensive US tours offered an early example for bands in the American underground noise circuit that many would come to follow. After disbanding Harry Pussy in 1997 and taking more than a decade off, Orcutt began a new phase of solo guitar performance with a series of LPs on the legendary Editions Mego label and on his own Palilalia Records. Performing on a guitar with four strings (leaving the lowest string and the three top strings), his output in this configuration careens between rushes of warp-speed atonal fretwork, accompanied by his wordless vocalizations, and damaged shards of blues, jazz, and selections from the Great American Songbook. With Music for Four Guitars, Orcutt flipped the script to focus on intricate guitar arrangement and rhythmic precision, writing shorter pieces with four multi-tracked electric guitar voices that alternately lock together and diverge into bombastic leads with accompaniments. The elevator pitch for this album would go something like “Steve Reich minimalist pieces performed by four guitarists from Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band” or “Glenn Branca’s guitar orchestra compressed into four voices.” Short rhythmic phrases loop and build upon each other to form complex mosaics, all presented with a skewed harmonic sensibility that slides from more legible melodies into abrasive atonality. Tape Edition C60 - 5 Panel J-Card Bill Orcutt invited three guitarists, each with their own extensive pedigrees and multi-faceted careers, to realize Music for Four Guitars in a live setting: Wendy Eisenberg, Ava Mendoza, and Shane Parish. Hailing from Massachusetts and currently based in New York City, Wendy Eisenberg has experimented with spellbinding guitar-and-voice performance in the singersongwriter vein, composed for large rock ensemble on their album Viewfinder, performed the "How loud can we be?" Bill Orcutt asked as his guitar quartet guitar music of Morton Feldman and Christian Wolff, and improvised with numerous tuned their Telecasters and Jazzmasters for sound check. A collaborators often within the scene orbiting John Zorn and his venue The Stone. New Yorkwild deconstructionist whose catalog spans a splatter of based guitarist/composer Ava Mendoza’s bottomless catalog of music in small ensembles heavy rock, avant jazz, contemporary classical, blues, and virtually any style hardcore punk, noise and electronic music, Orcutt has written encompasses imaginable in which a guitar can be involved. She has worked with Negativland, Nels Cline, and improvised on four-stringed guitars for four decades, William Parker, and Marc Ribot, to name a few, and she released a transcendent solo album culminating in the ecstatic minimalism of last year's Music for called The Circular Train on Orcutt’s Palilalia Records in 2024 that showcases her genresongwriting sensibilities and improvised impulses. Athens, GA-based guitarist/ Four Guitars, each part played and dubbed over by himself. colliding composer Shane Parish performs in the avant-rock trio Ahleuchatistas, who have released their unpredictable music on labels including Tzadik, Cuneiform, and International Anthem. His At the Tiny Desk, however, Orcutt brought along a who's who solo acoustic guitar practice, most recently featured on the album Repertoire, finds him of forward-thinking guitarists to perform these rowdy, giddy interpreting “standards” from far-flung eras and styles of music, from Aphex Twin to Alice — alongside a body of work of his own compositions in the experimental folk and shreddy pieces: Wendy Eisenberg, Ava Mendoza and Coltrane tradition. Parish teaches guitar professionally, and transcribed Orcutt’s Music for Four Guitars Shane Parish, who transcribed the original recordings. From into a score that the band learned for their live performances. a frenzied hoedown ("Or from behind") and feedbackRecorded at the midway point of their 2024 midwest tour, the sold-out first set of two shows humming drone-pop ("In the rain") to something resembling on May 3 in Chicago at Constellation, HausLive 4 showcases the Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet not Henry Cow playing Norwegian black metal ("In profile") and only at the heights of their telepathic interplay and locked-in performance exactitude with four-string guitars, but also riding a wave of wider public awareness beyond paradoxically Brutalist complexity ("Or head on"), each their experimental underground music circles — having performed a year before at NPR’s offices song is a short burst of finger-flicked frenzy.” - NPR for a taping of their popular Tiny Desk series. As the crowd’s first chance to see the Quartet their eyes in Chicago, the energy in the room coursed with high electric excitement, as “Instead of letting pieces snap together like a jigsaw puzzle, before evidenced by the hooting and hollering in the moments between songs. While the original Orcutt leans into tension, letting lines collide and harmonies Music for Four Guitars material conjured gravitas from the dry and brittle tones of Orcutt’s crunch. Elsewhere, his pursuit of the drone takes him to some multi-tracked guitars, with just a little bit of amplifier fuzz coloring the edges of his spiraling phrases, the Quartet’s relatively louder and more distorted live performance draws power far-flung places…” - Pitchfork from four different players each with their own varied equipment and performance styles. The moments when the Quartet locks into the tightly scripted pieces give the complexity and the beauty of Orcutt’s ideas room to shine in all their skewed grandeur, reminding us that these compositions, this “recital,” is the reason that these artists came together. At the same time, the band’s comfort in improvising with each other and opening the floor to solos and duos speaks to Orcutt’s trust in Eisenberg, Mendoza, and Parish as interpreters of his work outside of what’s written on the page. The music they offer us here, deeply saturated with individual personality and lived experience, comes to life in this vibrant incarnation because its performers have spent their lives not only honing their guitar skills (which, let’s be clear, are wild), but also honing their capacity to listen and respond to others, to embrace chance and uncertainty, and to meet their collaborators on shared ground. Being granted an hour of time to spend with the minds and the guitars of these four artists was a singular thrill in the room at Constellation. That energy flows through the audience recording captured on HausLive 4, in all its raucous intensity and generous communal spirit.

TRACKS PART 1 PART 2 PART 3 PART 4 & CODA

The recording & release of this album is the end result of the band’s decade-long relationship with Terry Riley’s 1964 masterwork, In C. When the group began, they played strictly throughcomposed percussion quartet music. As they grew as an ensemble, they became interested in collaboration, and In C seemed like a great way to get a group of musicians together for a largescale multi-instrumentalist concert. It was big enough to fill a program, while loose enough to pull together with minimal rehearsal time. They hosted our first performance of the piece in 2013, with a group of 20 musicians. The piece quickly became a staple of their repertoire and over time, their interpretation took on a distinct character, something they felt confident was unique to them.

TOP MARKETS BIRMINGHAM, CHICAGO, TOKYO, NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES, BROOKLYN

The entire album was recorded in the group’s respective houses, on free weekends, between the summers of ‘22-’23. They had some experience with home recording, but this project dwarfed anything they had taken on before. The four of them layered the instruments one at a time, quilting together a single 40-minute Logic Pro project consisting of 125 separate tracks. They researched micing techniques for dozens of obscure instruments, throwing everything at the wall to see what would stick. After 12+ years as a band, recording this album helped them solidify their vision, and has given them inspiration to continue performing this music, allowing it to evolve, for years to come.

The Catenary Wires are a group comprising Amelia Fletcher, Rob Pursey and Ian Button. Their critically acclaimed third album ‘Birling Gap’ was released in 2021. Since then, they have been focusing on their other bands, playing around the world with Heavenly (stars of the 90s indiepop scene) and Swansea Sound. A couple of years ago, word reached Rob and Amelia that Brian had been spotted wearing a Heavenly t-shirt at one of his shows, and was a big fan of their music. Given that they, in turn, were fans of Brian’s poetry, introductions were made, friendships were formed, and ‘Sounds Made By Humans’ took shape. The album isn’t a set of readings with musical backdrops: it’s a collection of songs, where words and music have become completely intertwined. There are verses, and there are choruses. There is no ‘riffing’, no improvisation. In many ways, Brian’s poems are already like pop songs: brief, direct, and witty; sometimes poignant, sometimes biting and political; but always economical, and always accessible. Rob took thirteen of Brian’s poems and created melodies and arrangements, which are then played by a full band, with Ian Button on drums and Fay Hallam on keyboard. Sometimes the words of the poems are sung by Amelia or Rob. Sometimes they are spoken by Brian. Sometimes both these things happen at once. This is a pop record where the poetry and the music are equal partners: sounds made by humans in perfect artistic alignment.
