2005…it’s 20 years since already? We can still feel the sensuous tickle of the wind at our back during that marvelous time. It was, as the Scorps promised, a wind of change, and we were drawn to a number of likeminded birds floating in that breeze! Today, we salute Six Organs of Admittance; their School of the Flower was just the record we’d never dreamed of when we asked them if they wanted to do one with us. Turned out their pronoun of choice was "him." "He" was Ben Chasny and we’ve been happy collaborating with him ever since. Coming on the heels of records like Dark Noontide and Compathia, School of the Flower found Six Organs riding high. Having achieved much in his traditional home-recorded kingdom, he too was looking for something different. What our Ben recalls:
"It was the first time Six Organs was in a studio, so that’s cool. I wanted to play with Chris Corsano to expand on some of the rhythms in my playing, to kind of suggest some different forms for the way the folkpsych/folk music were being played at the time. The title track was inspired by John Cale and Terry Riley ’s Church of Anthrax I remember we had a big tape loop stretched around the whole studio to form the basis of that. I was taking a lot of cold medicine that week not the coolest drugs to be on, but, you know…"
School of the Flower was indeed a whole new thing containing enduring fan favorites like "All You’ve Left," "Words for Two," Ben’s revelatory take on Gary Higgins' "Thicker Than a Smokey" (pointing the way for our reissue of Red Hash later that year) and a deep vibe of spiritual folk-jazz throughout. And best of all? It was just the beginning of twenty years of sending the inspiration of Six Organs of Admittance out into the world! But today, we’re happy to send you back to School of the Flower. There’s nothing like it.

When his father died in 2021, James McMurtry went through his effects and discovered a rough pencil sketch of himself as a child. “I knew it was of me, but I didn’t realize who drew it. I had to ask my stepmom, and she said it looked like Ken Kesey’s work back in the ‘60s.” The Merry Pranksters—Kesey’s roving band of hippie activists and creators—stopped by often to visit Larry McMurtry, his wife Faye, and his very young son James.
He held on to that drawing as he worked on a new album, The Black Dog & the Wandering Boy, his eleventh. It’s a collection of roughhewn story-songs and richly drawn characters sketches that have elements of Americana—rolling guitars, barroom harmonies, traces of banjo and harmonica—but sound too sly and smart for such a generalized category. Funny and sad often in the same breath, it adds a new chapter to a long career that has enjoyed a recent resurgence as younger songwriters like Sarah Jarosz (who plays on the new album) and Jason Isbell (who took McMurtry on tour) cite him as a formative influence.
McMurtry’s characters face similar realizations, although theirs are harder, sadder, and arrive at the end of life rather than the beginning. Sometimes they find life savers, like a calling or a fond memory; sometimes they drown, like that South Texas lawman. Even the songwriter himself doesn’t always know what will happen or what will inspire him. “You follow the words where they lead. If you can get a character, maybe you can get a story. If you can set it to a versechorus structure, maybe you can get a song.”

When Meg Remy, the visionary behind U.S. Girls, got an offer to play a festival in Hot Springs, Arkansas in early 2024, she enlisted Nashville-based friend Dillon Watson (Savoy Motel, Jack Name) to assemble a one-time band for the occasion. The show went so well that she decided to ride that energy right back to where the impromptu band initially rehearsed, in Music City, kickstarting the journey toward Scratch It
In ten days, Remy and her band — Watson on guitar, Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs, Loretta Lynn) on bass, Domo Donoho on drums, Jo Schornikow and Tina Norwood on keys and harmonica legend Charlie McCoy (Elvis, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison) — recorded Scratch It live. Closeness and ease emanate from this core band with Remy’s singular voice sparkling on top of every tune.
Album opener “Like James Said” is an ELO-styled nugget of AM gold; a nod to the power of dancing alone and a lyrical response to James Brown’s “Get Up Offa That Thing”. Lead single “Bookends” — a sprawling, 12-minute ballad co-written with Edwin de Goeij — is the heart of the album, paying tribute to the late Power Trip frontman Riley Gale through the lens of John Carey’s Eyewitness to History. Later, slinky diss track “No Fruit” finds Watson’s wah-wah punctuating Remy’s biting, poetic prophecy, aimed either at a lover or the greater modern world.
Scratch It weaves together country, gospel, garage rock, soul, disco, folk balladry, and more, with Remy’s masterful songwriting threaded throughout. Her choice to discard the computer-based production of previous albums in favor of two-inch tape serves the songs well, introducing an element of sonic shapeshifting expected from an artist nearly twenty years into making records. If instinct was an instrument, Remy would be a virtuoso. Scratch It and see.

Liam Finn has always followed his own path, pushing the boundaries of what it means to be a singer-songwriter. From his early days in Betchadupa, to his electrifying one-man performances on The Late Show with David Letterman and Later… With Jools Holland, and now as a key member and co-writer in Crowded House, Liam has consistently embraced innovation and reinvention. His latest solo release, Hyperverse, is no exception — a bold exploration of creativity that invites fans directly into the songwriting and recording process.
The genesis of Hyperverse began in 2021 after a solo show in Auckland reignited Liam’s love for the energy of live improvisation. Realizing he had never truly captured that raw, adrenalized spontaneity in the studio, he turned to Twitch, streaming over 333 hours of music-making to an audience of over 1.5 million viewers. The process was a creative highwire act, with fans offering real-time feedback as Liam crafted songs live. “It felt like having a roster of faceless, ageless, genderless producers,” he says.
The result is a collection of 10 tracks crackling with energy, irreverence, and innovation — each song reflecting the high-stakes immediacy of its creation. Among them is an alternate version of “The Howl”, a standout track from Crowded House’s 2024 album Gravity Stairs. Liam has spent the last few years writing and recording both for his solo project and Crowded House coupled with extensive touring, including two high-profile opening slots for Pearl Jam in New Zealand. This blurring of the lines between live performance and studio recording is captured perfectly on the Hyperverse and represents his most personal and ambitious work to date.
Now, for the first time and ahead of its official digital release, Hyperverse will be available as a physical release for Record Store Day 2025 on April 12th. (with an alternative “Hologram” cover and colored vinyl)
This “Deluxe” version comes in an 24-page booklet archiving the recording process for the album. Featuring stunning cover art by Hadley Donaldson, printed on iridescent card, this edition is a testament to Liam’s uncompromising vision and the unique bond he’s forged with his audience.
With Hyperverse, Liam Finn delivers an album as bold and unpredictable as the journey that created it — a record that distills a career of experimentation into a singular, thrilling experience.

Growing up in Bulgaria in the late 1990s, brothers Stef and Yavor Lilov were shaped in a myriad of unseen ways by the centuries-old folk music that filtered through their daily lives. It helped mold their creative spirit and inspired them to begin making noise together at a young age, and that unique and intuitive creative alchemy has been a foundation of guitarist/keyboardist Stef and drummer Yavor’s band L’Eclair since they formed it in their adopted home of Switzerland a decade ago.
After spending the past two years meticulously crafting Cloud Drifter, their fourth album and debut for revered U.S. label Innovative Leisure, L’Eclair is for the first time now led by the Lilov siblings. The result is an album seamlessly melding modernity with nostalgia and played with a robotic tightness that remains deeply human. Indeed, Cloud Drifter will move the body as much as it does the brain.
“We really wanted to finally be able to capture in the studio the feeling that people had listening to us live,” says Yavor. “Part of that involved really taking the time to polish the music between recording and mixing. Can we make this more impactful? How can we make it more attention-grabbing? Putting in that work and really dissecting the production helped us achieve the sonic result we were looking for.”
L’Eclair has built an international fanbase thanks to its impressive command of rhythm, dynamics and electro/acoustic alchemy, which has nodded equally to vocal-free titans such as Can and Tortoise, expansive, spacey and blissed-out jams ((2021’s Confusions) and more stripped-down, feel-good and genre-jumping destinations (the 2018 debut Polymood). Two live sessions for KEXP have accumulated nearly 900,000 views combined, beaming L’Eclair onto the playlists of adventurous listeners around the world.
And although Cloud Drifter reverberates with heavy, party-starting grooves (“Vertigo”), electrifying future club anthems (“MEMPHIS”) and even trap-inspired beats (“Nova Umbra”), its true revelations come from L’Eclair’s first-ever use of vocals, which are performed in a dizzying variety of styles by such guests as Pink Siifu, Gelli Haha, Phoebe Coco, Girl Named GOLDEN, A Ghost Column and Forest Law. The title track is also the maiden appearance of new L’Eclair member and singer/keyboardist Inès Mouzoune, whose group Roshâni is signed to Stone Pixels, the The Orchard-distributed label co-founded by the Lilovs.
“That was a special song in the process, with the three of us in the studio, finding the melody together,” Yavor recalls. “It wasn’t like, we send the instrumental, you bring the melody and then we’ll see. It was collective work towards choosing the right ingredients.”
Elsewhere, former tourmate Girl Named GOLDEN sidesteps her familiar lo-fi indie pop sound to brings forth a captivating vocal atop the hypnotic groove of the aptly named “The Glitch,” while Phoebe Coco’s wordless intonations greatly heighten the ethereal ballad “Ocean Mind.” Forest Law’s sweet, heartfelt singing conjures the wistful vibe of a beach-adjacent drive with the top down on “Nostalgia,” while Gelli Hanna’s confident utterances (“something’s up with you” / “heaven can wait, should you be
late”) help propel “Run,” the demo of which started in Afro-electronic/Nyege Nyege Tapes territory before morphing into something much more upbeat and crunchy.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Pink Siifu’s dexterous flow on “Replica M001” unlocks a brave new sonic world previously unvisited in L’Eclair’s prior work.
“It was very important that the first hip-hop song L’Eclair releases didn’t contain a loop,” Stef says in reference to Siifu’s performance, which is almost on a jazz level in terms of its complexity. “It was more about using what Siifu does best, which is rapping on a drumless beat with timeless instruments. What you hear is a freestyle. He used his voice as an instrument and you see the full spectrum of his abilities. That's what we wanted of every guest — to push them where they're not used to.”
The Lilovs also pushed themselves to deepen the material by recording a string quartet, a choir and a harpist at London contemporary jazz hub Total Refreshment Centre, whose like-minded artists-in-residence provided an extra, intangible burst of inspiration (acclaimed saxophonist/composer Alabaster DePlume happened to be tracking his own session there at the same time and hung out with L’Eclair while listening to the playback).
“We were really, really proud of actually seeing our music written out as a score and executed with a string quartet,” says Stef, who enlisted longtime friend Arthur Sajas (HAHA Sound Collective) to write the arrangement. “I know some of us cried.” The final touches came from Electric Lady Studio mix engineer Matt Scatchell (Adele, James Blake), of whose work Yavor says, “it was a completely new experience for me as a producer and musician to hear something we did as equal to artists or songs that I’ve admired for a lot of years.”
Crystallizing Cloud Drifter’s musical voyage is Melissa Santamaria’s artwork, which depicts an alien world enriched by a living, flower-like structure that may or may not also serve as an interdimensional portal. Says Yavor, “This album is a trip to unknown territories, but it all goes back to what is close to us: what is human, and what brings us back to reality?”
“When Stef and I began playing music, we did it with our ears and without writing. It always started with the emotion. We are always in search of the tools to make those emotions stronger. L’Eclair wants to make you dance and cry, and this album is a great example of that,” he continues. “For me, that’s what L’Eclair is about.”

Genre-bending Tropical Fuck Storm present their highly anticipated fourth album, ‘Fairyland Codex,’ on their new label home Fire Records. Recorded with co-producer Michael Beach at the band’s Dodgy Brothers studio in Nagambie, Australia, the songs on ‘Fairyland Codex’ immerse us in the chaos of a fateful landslide, picking out the characters that litter the impending collapse of society.
Acidic, acerbic, anarchic; Tropical Fuck Storm's command of wordplay, undercut by snarling guitars, pulsing rhythms, and explosive salvos, populates a hinterland between light and dark. The vocal interplay between Liddiard and the soaring harmonies of Kitschin and Dunn creates a teetering balancing act that’s intensified by the frantic narratives that evolve from their collective psyche.
“Tropical Fuck Storm are masters of tension and release.” The Guardian
Tropical Fuck Storm formed when guitarist and vocalist Gareth Liddiard and bassist and vocalist Fiona Kitschin’s previous band, The Drones, went on hiatus in 2016. Joined by guitarist, keyboardist, and vocalist Erica Dunn and drummer Lauren Hammel, the group has released a string of critically acclaimed albums and gained a reputation for their incendiary live shows.

Berlin-based Colombian DJ, producer, and curator Edna Martinez presents a sonic journey into the electrifying world of Picó the vibrant and dynamic sound system culture that has defined the streets of Cartagena and Barranquilla for decades More than just a musical movement, Picó is a way of life, a bold expression of identity, community, and resistance From its roots in the working-class neighbourhoods of Colombia’s Caribbean coast to its deep connections with Africa and the Caribbean, this compilation captures the pulse of a culture where music is played at full volume, rhythms travel across oceans, and dance is both a form of celebration and storytelling.
For those unfamiliar, Picós are hand-painted sound systems, often adorned with dazzling colours and striking imagery, each with its own name and sonic identity These mobile discos became the heart of neighbourhood bailes, where the sounds of champeta, highlife, soukous, mbaqanga, zouk, soca, and cumbia would turn every street corner, market, and terrace into a dancefloor. Initially built by local craftsmen using modified speaker components, Picós became legendary for their powerful bass and exclusivity, with DJs sourcing rare vinyl from African and Caribbean ports and rebranding them with unique piconemas new names adapted to local slang, making the tracks instantly recognisable within the community
This compilation brings together a carefully curated selection of these rare and sought-after tracks, tracing the deep-rooted musical exchanges between Colombia, West and Central Africa, and the Caribbean. Featuring artists like Los Corraleros De Majagual, Peacocks International Highlife Band, Pedro Lima, Zaïko Langa Langa, and more, the album also includes edits by Edna Martinez, reimagining these timeless rhythms for contemporary audiences while staying true to their original spirit
Strut presents ‘Picó! Thee modern masters of sweet soul return with two killer 6/8 ballads that explore the messy particulars of love lost and love found. The moody, blues forward "Somebody Knew" tackles the former as singer Josh Lane bares his soul with a tale about a sensitive subject many of us can relate to — processing the shame and pain associated with losing the one you love to another. Tracked during the sessions for Got a Story to Tell and a stand out in their live set, "We Don't Have to Be Alone" is a gorgeous, floaty ballad that deals with two folks coming to terms with the fact that it's ok to find comfort and joy in love at a provisional level.

The Cha Cha Cha
Ireland’s favorite Avant-punk quartet has re-issued The Early Years EP, a collection of out of print 7” singles and covers originally released on Rough Trade in 2015. The Cha Cha Cha has now been mastered alongside the rest of the tracks and is ready for the dancefloor once again.
Fan fave (and live setlist staple) featured on the collection is an eight-minute cover of postdubstep mastermind Blawan’s absurdist banger and demented earworm “Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage” that, simply put, is unlike anything you’ve ever heard before or since.
Willie Buck and Bob Corritore are true ambassadors of the classic Chicago blues sound. Their musical relationship began in the late 1970s when Willie invited Bob to join his band. And even though Bob moved to Phoenix Arizona in the 1980s they’ve remained close friends and have reunited to perform together each year. The album OH YEAH on the VizzTone Label Group exemplifies their shared mission statement of delivering old school Chicago blues as it’s meant to be played!
Together with the All-Star backing bands on this album Willie and Bob are set up to deliver the goods. One of the unique aspects of this album is the guest appearance of Muddy Waters band alumnus Bob Margolin whose brilliant guitar work is featured on about 2/3 of the album. This connects all participants to that elusive Muddy Waters sound rarely achieved in today’s blues. If tough, pure Chicago blues is your pleasure, the this album is sure to bring great joy!

A collection of rare gems from a long-lost Texas label!
Startime, the country subsidiary of Abnak (Five Americans, Jon & Robin), sought to give voice to the unique talent of the Lone Star State. Hear the fusion of traditional honky-tonk and Western swing come to life, full of heartache (yes, lots of heartache), grit, and passion.
Founded in 1963 by Dallas insurance man John Howard Abdnor Sr., Abnak Records first gained attention with acts like The Five Americans, but it was Startime’s roster of homegrown talent that really reflected the sound of Texas. Headed by the talented producer Ray Winkler, known for penning Jim Reeves’ hit "Welcome to My World," Startime brought together a collection of artists whose music echoed through honky-tonks and radio stations of Texas and beyond.
From the mid-1960s through the mid-1970s, country music in Texas experienced a fusion of traditional honky-tonk, Western swing, and the emerging outlaw country movement. While Nashville was dominating the mainstream, Texas remained a breeding ground for authentic, raw country music, thanks in part to iconic venues like Panther Hall in Fort Worth and The Dallas-based Big D Jamboree barn dance and radio show. These two venues played critical roles in shaping country music careers, including several of the artists featured on this album.

TRACKS!)
Metallic Life Review is the sound of two people who have collected field recordings of metal objects from around the world for years of their lives together, collaging their magpie hoard into rhythmic patterns, sometimes writing melodies and basslines, but sometimes just letting sound be sound. Patient gathering yields to ADHD editing. Painstakingly made but blink and you’ll miss it. Is it music or is it noise? It is without a doubt exceptionally beautiful music wrought from metal detritus.
By employing the strong contrast between a harsh industrial clatter-fest and a sweeter melodic dimension that acts as a deliberate counterforce, Matmos created an album that is utterly delightful. A “life review” is a phrase used to describe the psychological phenomena reported by people who have survived near death experiences: the sense captured in the phrase “my life flashed before my eyes.” Metallic Life Review is a kind of compressed fast-forward of Matmos’ career with a sonic parade of the metallic objects from their lives. The sounds on the album were captured over the entire length of the existence of Matmos as a band.
Metallic Life Review features Susan Alcorn’s pedal steel, Owen Gardner’s glockenspiel, Thor Harris’ drumming, Jason Willett’s (Half Japanese) guitar, and Jeff Carey’s aluminum cans, which were melted, molded into custom aluminum rods, and then bowed and struck. The most dramatic difference from any previous Matmos album is that side two was recorded “live in the studio”, ala Throbbing Gristle’s Heathen Earth. For the first time on recording, Matmos capture the evolving, shifting, slithering dynamic that happens when they play live and let patterns emerge out of chaos and then collapse and then re-form. Their playful blend of compositional brilliance and improvisational playfulness meld perfectly, truly capturing ecstatic moments in a way that can only happen live.
Metallic Life Review is a love story transmuted into sound, the result of a life filled with curiosity and powered by boundless exploration. Matmos have again made something spellbinding, brilliant and emotionally resonant.
WARNING: Metallic Life Review Features a huge metallic salad bowl being detuned in a piece of software called Izotope Rx. No lettuce was harmed in the making of this album.

“The two men of Matmos are living rebukes to the idea that conceptual art is somehow scary and inaccessible. When they decide to make a track out of the sounds of a breast implant or a cow uterus, they’re challenging themselves not just to use those noises, but to make them sound funky and fun.” - Pitchfork

Sally Anne Morgan is an artist and naturalist in the purest senses. Raised on old time and Appalachian folk traditions, Morgan’s artistry embodies the rich life of the communities and natural world she surrounds herself with. Based in Alexander, NC on the edge of Appalachia and the Pisgah National Forest, Sally’s blend of traditional technique and distinctly modern compositional approach are infused with the sounds of her garden, surrounding pastures, forests and mountains.
“I wanted to capture the feeling of walking outside and just encountering organic nature sounds, some with patterns, some with a randomness that also verges on its own kind of pattern,” notes Morgan “Old time fiddle music is the seed that grew into the part of my brain that makes music, and everything I do somehow seems to come back to that” she concludes. Abstraction in pursuit of free exploration of that which can’t be put into words balancing with an intentional structure of song lies at the album’s core.
Guest synthesis Sean Dunlap (Field Patterns) and hurdy-gurdy player Brian “Geologist” Weitz (Animal Collective) embellish pieces with droning thrums and sonic moss. The fiddles dance gracefully across the bedrock of banjo loops on “Flowers of Sandihar”. The lush “I Saw a Heron” speckles modal piano figures over a violin that sounds out from below, as if played at the bottom of a gorge. Slow guitar arpeggios on “Eye is the First” are met with hiccupping banjo and otherworldly synth tones. Long time collaborator/mixer Joseph Dejarnette’s bass gently underpins Morgan’s reimagining of folk tune “Callahan” into a more dramatic arc.
Second Circle The Horizon is an album built on Morgan’s singular artistic voice as an improviser and composer intertwined with deft intuition. Morgan’s music highlights her bond with nature, and how its beauty and the beauty of artistic creation are interwoven. The album celebrates creation, revels in discovery, and marvels at the complex patterns, intersectional cycles and simple beauty of a creative life intertwined with the natural world.

Nechochwen is an artistic force dedicated to preserving the past through sound. With “Kanawha Black”, the West Virginia duo delves deeper into the folklore, war, and generational wisdom of Appalachia, transforming history into music that is both urgent and timeless. This is an album shaped by the land itself – its rivers and ridgelines, its battles and buried secrets, its ghosts and forgotten voices.
Melding intricate folk passages with the might of black metal, “Kanawha Black” is a work of contrasts: the tangible and the spectral, history and legend, past and present. The doomed last stand of Chief Cornstalk in “I Can Die But Once” and the ancestral scars of “Generations of War” stand alongside the mythic – the great horned serpent of “The Murky Deep”, the strange omens of “Visions, Dreams, and Signs”, and the meditative “A Cure for the Winter Plagues”, a tribute to nature’s quiet resilience. The further one listens, the more the lines blur, until history and folklore become one.
More than an album, “Kanawha Black” is a testament to the unbroken lineage of Appalachian customs and indigenous tradition. With this reissue through Nordvis – now available on CD for the first time – its themes remain as vital as ever, offering new listeners a chance to step into Nechochwen’s world.
This edition also includes two bonus tracks: “Eastern Hemlock Medicine Song”, appearing on physical format for the first time, and “Across the Divide (Acoustic Version)”, making its debut release.

Following his 2023 EP Pianovoz Electroacústica on seminal experimental imprint Deathbomb Arc, composer, educator, and technologist Max Alper, known to many online for his commentary on the state of music education and the industry at large as La Meme Young, returns for a biting full length collection of minimalist songs for piano, voice, and electronics under the Peretsky moniker entitled “It Doesn’t Get Cold In October Anymore” As the title implies, this collection of tracks evokes a pessimism while reflecting on a rapidly changing landscape, both at home and abroad, physically and mentally, internally and externally. Each song represents a familial story, whether it be on the subject of marriage, parenting, vocation, political leanings, or religion.
As described by the artist himself: “I began conceptualizing this LP when I first moved back to New York in August 2023 after 4 years abroad teaching and recording in Puerto Rico I had felt the need to “come home” musically during the years prior, having shifted my practice from noise, sound art, and free improvisation over the 2010s back towards more consonant, minimal, and through-composed song structures, and this finally culminated in me literally coming home stateside in 2023 This feeling of warm optimistic embrace returning to friends and family in the Northeast was abruptly cut short at the start of the War in Gaza on October 7th, and we have been living in a charred October ablaze ever since. This collection of songs, some of which having first been composed as far back as 2018, has since taken on an oeuvre of doubt and shame when they were once moments of joy and triumph. As a long-time believer in Yiddishkeit, Bundism, and liberatory theology, I will never forgive the powers that be that have replaced so much of the initial joy that sparked these works with this seemingly endless weight of sorrow I release these new recordings as a continued act of reclamation of what was once mine and how I once felt, in hopes of a more just world and the liberation of all peoples from oppression ”

Produced by longtime collaborator Jaydee DeLeon (Enamoured Sound) and mastered by Joshua Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv, Little Women, Nine Inch Nails), It Doesn’t Get Cold In October Anymore combines the impressionist and blues piano influences of Erik Satie, Charlemagne Palestine, and Emahoy Tsegue Mariam Gebru, the drone doom Americana of Dylan Carlson, and the minimalist vocal pop sensibilities of Anohhi and FKA Twigs to create a sonic palette that is entirely its own. While many shy away from such vulnerability and intimate means of song arrangement and subject materials, Peretsky leans in, all in hopes of being a better, kinder person on the other side, for both listener and artist alike

The debut LP from Swiss-born, NYC-based composer Mauro Hertig's Xol Meissner alias A departure from his previous work, which is well known in classical circles, Hertig here has created a sinister, dreamlike world of sound with his unique hammered lap-steel technique and a velvety baritone croon that at times evokes Scott Walker His lyrics are surreal and mythic, with horse hearts ripped out, kisses over a pharaoh's tomb, leering voyeurs, wine glasses full of tears Built on the twin columns of Meissner's voice and the aforementioned hammered lap steel, Excess of Loss is an eerie, Lynchian vision and a unique Freudian trip
Excess of Loss was recorded at legendary Future-Past Studios in Upstate New York, with its founder Patrick Higgins (Zs, Aeaea) engineering and producing Higgins has previously recorded and produced records for Nicolás Jaar, John Zorn, The National and Last Shadow Puppets at Future-Past

Emerging from London’s underground music scene, The Sick Man Of Europe is distinctly monochrome in its outlook. Each note counts in this climate –economical but played with absolute precision and conviction. Propelled forward by machines and seeking solace in repetition. There are echoes of the post-punk and European art rock pioneers at the cusp of the 80s, but re-tooled for the present. The same fears. Looking for answers or something to believe in, but finding more questions in an age of absolutes.
Minimal, but with a strong eye for the right detailon the eponymous debut album, that eye is focussed firmly on the battle between the internal and the external. TSMOE draws on the tensions between human identity, technological advancement and the pursuit of meaning in the modern world.
The Sick Man Of Europe name connects the current post-Brexit landscape to the austerity of Thatcherite Britain and the social conditions that shaped the likes of Bauhaus and Joy Division. These are touchstones for TSMOE, but the influence and discipline of Neu!, Suicide and Swans are just as intrinsic to the sound. Produced as a reaction to previous musical projects, TSMOE was looking for clarity and complete control in its creative endeavours. It’s consciously anti-rock in its recorded approach - no low-end bass guitar, minimal effects and no live drums. Dedication to the craft of focussed song writing rather than attempting to follow current production trends.

Yuuf announces their signing to Ninja Tune imprint Technicolour with the release of Alma’s Cove. The EPwillbeavailableonblackvinyl.
Alma’s Cove is the anticipated second EP from London-based quartet Yuuf, following their breakout 2024 debut In The Sun — a record that garnered over 1.3 million Spotify streams, 1.7 million YouTube views on its Surrey Hills live session, and sold out its firsttwovinylpressings entirelyindependently.
With Alma’s Cove, Yuuf refine and elevate their sonic identity: a rich, genre-blurring tapestry they call Global Psychedelia. The EP draws melodic inspiration from West and Central African traditions, Thai psych (Khun Narin), Mexican cumbia (Los Diablos Rojos), and the nostalgic dreaminess of Studio Ghibli scores and Spanish classical guitar (Tárrega).Thesediverse influences are anchored by a hypnotic rhythm section that blends afrobeat grooves, syncopated soul, and ambienttextureswithAmericanaovertones.
“A dreamy tropical space free from stress... a sheltered paradise to enjoy at yourownleisure.” –Yuufon Alma’sCove
The EP represents a counterpoint to the group’s London life — offering a sonic sanctuary of calm, connection, andnature.

Best known as a multi- instrumental member of Tortoise and a pillar of the Chicago jazz and experimental music sc ene, Jeff Parker has been incomparably prolific over the last 20+ years while merely producing 5 albums as a “lead artist” (just 2 since 2005, including 2016’s duo recording with Rob Mazurek on Rogue Art ). “Lead artist” is in quotes here, because though his name is seldom seen in marquees, his distinctive guitar sound has been essential to every project he’s been part of. It was in that sense that we at International Anthem came to work with Parker during the production of Makaya McCraven ’s In The Moment, an album which ultimately showcased said essentialness (of Parker’s “side man” sound) on 9 of its 19 tracks.
Over the course of the In The Moment sessions in 2013 and 2014, Parker was slowly transitioning his personal belongings from Chicago to a new home in Los Angeles. It was when finally settled that he fou nd opportunity to re-open some home recordings and beat projects that had been dormant on his hard drive for years (early versions of some could have been heard in the late ‘00s on his Myspace page). Parker had long been in silent study of vinyl sampling and beat conduction, but perhaps it’ s no coincidence that new residence in a city aflame with experimental R&B, jazz and electronic fusers (i.e. L A , e.g. Brainfeeder, Leaving Records, Low End Theory) spurred him to dig back in to the practice and produce with more purpose.
By early 2015 Parker had refined several compositional ideas around his samples, and enlisted local friend Paul Bryan (Aimee Mann, Meshell Ndegeocello) to engineer and play bass gui tar in sessions with Chicago ex -pat saxophonist, Thelonious Monk Institute protégé Josh Johnson (Miguel Atwood -Ferguson, Esperanza Spaulding) and drummer Jamire Williams (Robert Glasper, Carlos Niño). The recordings were conducted to capture composed passages as well as free playing that used Parker’s beats and sample suites as improvisational criterion . After completing 7 songs with the band, the last of which with vocals from his daughter Ruby Parker recorded in Chicago by John McEntire , Parker named the project The New Breed (after a clothing store his late father Ernie owned and operated in the ‘70s) and finished the album by stitching the band tracks together with intermittent pieces of beat memories from his archive.
The final presentation is a retrospective tapestry that explores Parker’s past both musically – as a potent compositional tribute to his influences (J Dilla, Thelonious Monk , Charles Stepney) held together by literal fragments of his life’s work – and patrilineally – as a collaboration with his kin held together by clip pings from the family photo album. The New Breed is Jeff Parker’s most vibrant and comprehensively personal work yet, appropriately the first in 11 years with only his name in the “lead artist” column.
- Jeff Parker on tour with his main project, Tortoise, for much of 2016
- Album mastered by Dave Cooley (known for mastering J Dilla’s Donuts )
- Features cover of the Bobby Hutcherson tune “Visions”
- Release shows planned for Chicago and Los Angeles in late July 2016
- Heavyweight tip-on sleeve for vinyl LP version

Irreversible Entanglements are a liberation - oriented free jazz collective formed in early 2015 by saxophonist Keir Neuringer, poet Camae Ayewa (a.k.a. Moor Mother) and bassist Luke Stewart, who came together to perform at a Musicians Against Police Brutality event organized after the slaying of Akai Gurley by the NYPD Months later the group added trumpeter Aquiles Navarro and drummer Tcheser Holmes (a duo who also performed at the MAPB event) for a single day of recording at Seizure’s Palace in Brooklyn, and the full quintet’s first time playing together was captured for this debut. In four relentless bouts of inspired fire music the instrumentalists explore and elaborate compositional ideas drawn from their deep individual studies of free jazz improvisation, but the tone of each piece is driven decisively by Ayewa’s searing poetic narrations of Black trauma, survival and power. The message is the undeniable essence of the music. Though free jazz with voice is an uncommon approach in the modern day landscape of the genre, the spirit and subject the band channels and explores represent a return to a central tenant of the sound as it was founded – to be a vehicle for Black liberation. As creative and adventurous as any recording of contemporary avant-garde jazz but offering listeners no abstractions to hide behind, this is music that both honors and defies tradition, speak ing to the present while insisting on the future.

In late November of 2018, long-time collaborators (& life-long Los Angelenos) Carlos Niño & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson flew to Chicago to participate in the album release performance of Makaya McCraven’s Universal Beings Just 11 months prior, Carlos & Miguel were part of recording the ‘Los Angeles Side’ of Universal Beings at Jeff Parker’s house in Altadena, California, and this performance in Chicago would be the first time that all of the musicians reunited to re-learn and perform the music they’d collectively composed during those sessions.
The Universal Beings performance and preceding days of rehearsal took place at the iconic South Shore Cultural Center – a historic gilded-era urban club-turned-public facility deep on Chicago’s Southside and right along the reedy shore of Lake Michigan, giving the building’s backdrop an infinitely blue Northern expanse.
The night after the performance at South Shore Cultural Center, friend of International Anthem Jeremy Cunningham was scheduled to debut new music (The Weather Up There, which has since been released on Northern Spy Records) at our HQ, Co-Prosperity Sphere Since Carlos & Miguel were still in Chicago (before they’d head to NYC for a second Universal Beings performance at Le Poisson Rouge), we invited them to do a Special Guest duo set to open the show.
At the conclusion of their 44-minute improvised set that night, Carlos spontaneously dubbed the piece “Chicago Waves.” His proclamation gave us the distinct impression that the previous days spent in South Shore (and the many commutes to-and-from, along Lake Shore Drive) had imprinted the deep blue vastness of early-Winter Lake Michigan into Carlos & Miguel’s respective & collective consciousness, and thus, into the spirit of the luminous music they created that night at Co-Prosperity Sphere We at IARC are happy to share Chicago Waves with the world in a time when peace-bringing sound and a sweet memory of live music, sparkling inside the collective breath of community in community space, has potential to provide the utmost nourishment.

Unforgiving Mistress was originally released in 1999 and will finally get its due with its first vinyl pressing. From songs about morality to the rare Corb Lund love song, Unforgiving Mistress is packed with Corb’s classic storytelling and songwriting. “This record was my second as the Corb Lund Band and I was still in The Smalls when it was released. It was a major step forward from Modern Pain in terms of songwriting, arrangement and recording quality for me. I hadn’t heard this album for years and I was pleasantly surprised at how it holds up. I like how folky it is,” says Lund, “It’s a cool little record, made for about 1200 bucks. It took me right back to my early days, writing the songs in a parking booth in Edmonton that was barely wide enough for my guitar. Things were getting pretty hectic at the time because the smalls were touring quite a bit and I was filling up every spare weekend with country gigs. I’m glad I burned the midnight oil and got this thing made.”
This limited edition release is part of the Corb Lund - Dark Horses Club. New West Records will be releasing unreleased records and material from Corb Lund throughout 2025 and 2026.

PRODUCED WITH THE FULL COOPERATION OF THE RAY CHARLES FOUNDATION
A TOP-TEN STEW OF JAZZ, SOUL, AND POP STANDARDS
INCLUDES THE HITS “BUSTED” AND “THAT LUCKY OLD SUN”
Ingredients In A Recipe For Soul proved that Ray Charles didn’t so much ignore genres, but, by the ’60s, had become a genre unto himself. An academic might want to separate this stack of songs into neat little buckets—country, jazz, standards, blues, pop—but those are just the ingredients. Ray Charles sings whatever he likes and whatever he sings comes out as a Ray Charles song, with a flavor all its own.
Two hit singles, “Busted” and “That Lucky Old Sun,” made Ingredients In A Recipe For Soul an instant Top Ten when it was released in 1963. Bootlegged across Europe for decades, this is the first and only legitimate reissue of this essential album on vinyl (and its first appearance on CD since the 1990s), now fully restored and remastered with the full cooperation of the Ray Charles Foundation.

This is Triple-A Ra: Audacious, Aggressive, Adventurous.
These tracks capture Ra's electronic peregrinations during the 1970s and '80s. The Arkestra occasionally makes a cameo appearance but Ra commands the spotlight, not so much composing music as painting soundscapes with electronic keyboards.

In the collection we've titled Stray Voltage, Ra is not so much composing music as painting soundscapes with electronic keyboards. Ra doesn't simply play these consoles — he attacks, cajoles, and pounds them. He upends and transports them where they weren't built to go. Sometimes they fracture under his assault. He steers them into the zone of intimacy and combat. They emit whirrs, hums, jolts and squiggles, crowned by explosions. Ra's repertoire includes feedback, distortion, torrents, and mysterious beeps from far-off planets. With one keystroke Ra could trigger a sonic apocalypse.
These performances might sound like they were generated by machines, but there was a robed wizard at the controls. Ra turns this musical circuitry into compressors and transformers, dynamos and turbines. He updates George Antheil for the Space Age.
On these tracks there's music redefined, science repurposed — and journeys into the cosmic darkness. Some call it noise. Noise can be music too. It might not sound like earthly music, but that's because Space Pilot Sun Ra intended to take you on a pangalactic excursion, for which he created the mixtape.

Heir to the tradition of the Griots -storytellers, poets and musicians who served for centuries as guardians of West African cultural heritage- Ousmane was an innovator of the modern electric Mandingue sound.
Alongside Mory Kanté & Kanté Manfila with Les Ambassadeurs du Motel de Bamako and later on the Abidjan relocated band Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux, Ousmane forged his career before he served malian singer Salif Keita as his guitarist for more than three decades.
A few years of touring got Ousmane to focus on his own compositions. “Kefimba” named after the all-black bull from his childhood with whom he had shared his Manioc meal and “N’Ny” were recorded at the esteemed JBZ Recording Studio in Abidjan. Initially released on cassette they made it to vinyl in 1982 and 1983.
Just a few months after the Leon Keita release, Analog Africa now presents Ousmane Kouyaté’s two funk-infused Mandingue gems from the early 1980s, meticulously restored, pressed on 180g pink colored virgin vinyl, and housed in a beautiful screen-printed jacket. Limited to 2000 copies worldwide, this LP promises to set dancefloors ablaze with its infectious rhythms.

TL; DR: Finely-crafted indiepop with broad influences stretching from 60s folk and pop through early 80s
DIY and the C86/K International Pop Underground.
RIYL: Marine Girls, Dear Nora, The Aislers Set.
Over the course of a decade playing together and making records as Jeanines, the duo of Alicia Jeanine and Jed Smith have charted a distinctive course through the history of pop, evoking influences as varied as the 60s folk of early Fairport Convention and Vashti Bunyan, the sunshine pop of Margo Guryan and Laura Nyro, and of course indiepop touchstones like Dear Nora,Marine Girls, Dolly Mixture, and the post-Black Tambourine projects of Pam Berry. Their new album "How Long Can It Last" finds Jeanines grappling with serious themes of personal and professional upheaval, adding weight to their finest set of songs yet. With lyrics that look deeply at time and its reverberations, connections and ruptures, songs like "Coaxed A Storm," "What's Done Is Done" and "On and On" combine richly melodic tunes and crisp arrangements to stellar effect. While the themes might be heavy, the melodies and harmonies are simply heavenly, elevating these economical songs and giving each the feeling of a lost classic.

Note: The LP and CD formats of "Thinking, Dreaming, Scheming!” also contain the songs from the band’s “Good Good Great!” cassette EP, which is also still available.
Carrying on the long tradition of sentimental jangle pop songwriters, Lightheaded distill decades of lovelorn tunes into sounds for modern softies. They have the sunshine sparkle of The Left Banke and Margo Guryan, the C86 charm of Dolly Mixture and Would-Be-Goods, and the cinematic swell of Belle & Sebastian and Camera Obscura.
"Thinking, Dreaming, Scheming!" is their most collaborative and earnest release to date, and marks their first collaborative release with Slumberland and the UK's Skep Wax label. From Laurel Canyon folky jangle to elegant chamber pop to lovesick girl-group ballads, Lightheaded's tunes nod to the ‘60s without feeling antiquated and this new EP is their most perfectly bittersweet and fully-realized recording yet.

Gelli Haha exists somewhere between Studio 54 and Area 51, where dancefloors become playgrounds and cheeky aesthetics ignite imagination. A shapeshifter, a sonic acrobat, a performer with one foot in the cosmos and the other in a slapstick routine, Gelli Haha is a space for pure creative chaos.
For her opening trick, Gelli Haha presents Switcheroo, the debut album via Innovative Leisure, to be released in June 2025. With a shared taste for off-kilter pop and vintage gear, producer Sean Guerin (of De Lux) joined Gelli in turning freshly-formed demos into a high-voltage experiment, abandoning meticulous structure for something freer and more electrifying. Every song on Switcheroo makes use of a myriad of recording toys; wacky analog effects, such as the Eventide Harmonizer, MXR Pitch Transposer, and various Electrix units, fashion an intentionally flawed and strictly silly texture throughout the album.
Gelli Haha’s music thrives on duality: playful but profound, tongue-in-cheek but sincere. “Bounce House” is the child-like innocence; “Spit” is the S-words-only underground-club grit. “Piss Artist” revels in tequila-fueled storytelling about an infamous party moment (involving a jar — don’t ask, just dance), while “Normalize” feels like you’re stuck in Play-Doh.
It’s a practice in play - recording vocals mid-jump, translating drum fills into mouth sounds, granting your best friend’s wish for a song about them. A bear attack crashes through the happy-go-lucky “Dynamite”, “Funny Music” ends with a sudden “BONK!”— because why not?
The emotional rainbow stretches beyond the positive — Gelli pouts and wails on "Tiramisu", demanding to know and feel everything, while "Pluto is not a planet it’s a restaurant" closes the album in a darker, heart-throbbing track with the repeated cry: "I’m afraid."

Switcheroo is the soundtrack to the Gelliverse, a sensory adventure sphere created by Gelli. This live revue is an invitation into a world of dolphin balloons, flutes, mini trampolines, and a stage bathed in the project’s primary color, red - bold and full of mischief.
Gelli Haha isn’t foolproof. It’s by design. Switcheroo is an exercise in letting go, an inside joke turned theatrical spectacle. Participation is encouraged. Surrender is required.

Matthew Herbert and drummer/vocalist Momoko Gill announce the release of new album Clay, via Strut records in collaboration with Accidental
A soulful, elastic collaboration, Clay treads nimbly between the dancefloor and the more introspective moods of the early hours, both reminiscent of Herbert’s iconic album Around The House while taking off in a compelling new direction. Agile and open-hearted, Clay is a thrilling, sonically adventurous record from two of the UK’s most forward-thinking artists
Orbiting around Herbert’s fleet-footed productions and the ingenuity of Momoko Gill’s dexterous, melodic writing, Clay is at once stripped-back and rhythmically complex, drawing on a variety of found sourcesfrom japanese kotos to basketballs - to give the sound an unmistakably organic feel
Bringing together original sampling techniques, live improvisation and lush, expansive arrangements, Clay is lifted into higher realms by Momoko Gill’s intimate vocal performance, soaring wide-winged across the album’s eleven tracks, whether on the euphoric melancholia of ‘Mowing’ or the emotive duet ‘Heart’
Prefaced by lead singles ‘Babystar’, ‘Need to Run’ and ‘Someone Like You’, Clay follows the 2024 release of debut collaboration ‘Fallen’ and Momoko Gill’s remix of Matthew Herbert’s ‘The Horse Is Here’ And yet, although Clay marks the first full-length release between Herbert and Gill, the duo’s shared passion for pushing sonic boundaries has played a crucial role in their respective careers to date.
For Herbert that means treating the world as an instrument, making music using everything from the sounds of a bomb exploding in Libya, a horse skeleton, a tank driving over a meal made for Tony Blair, 20,000 dogs, 245 shops and countless other noises His album ONE PIG – which follows the lifecycle of a pig from birth to plate – remains one of the most ambitious and provocative pieces of electronic music this century, cementing his reputation as an utterly singular composer, artist and producer
Self-taught in drums and composition, Momoko Gill’s journey to Clay has been similarly experimental –cutting her teeth in South London’s multi-disciplinary music scene, embracing new challenges and collaborating with the likes of Coby Sey, Tirzah and Alabaster DePlume Although drums and vocals are her mediums of choice, Gill’s multi-instrumental talents were on full show on 2024’s EP as An Alien Called Harmony with poet/rapper Nadeem Din-Gabisi, and she continues to hone her style in the frictions between genres
With an intuitive feel for one another’s sound, Clay is a meeting of musical minds that resonates far beyond the sum of its parts - a startlingly fresh, beautifully conceived record from two artists who sound like they’ve been playing together all their lives

In 1987, Rafael Toral began making his own compositions and solo recordings using electric guitar in an enhanced signal path. In the time since then, he has developed his conceptions, first as a guitar improviser, then in what he called his “Space Program”, utilizing selfmade electronic modules. 2024’s Spectral Evolution was a much-acclaimed return to guitar voicings and improvisations, edified by his further explorations in electronic sound. In the wake of his extraordinary new music comes a new set of CD masters for Rafael’s first two albums, Sound Mind Sound Body and Wave Field, alongside represses of the 2018 vinyl remasters for both. Nearly 40 years later, these recordings sound remarkably prescient and perfectly timeless – fresher today than when they were first released!
Sound Mind Sound Body Track List:
Loopability II (CD Only) AE 2
Textura VIII
Sound Mind Sound Body was inspired in part by the working principles of Fripp & Eno, extrapolated by Rafael via a unique signal path leading out of his guitar. He paid notice to the massive impact of discreet gestures, creating slow-moving tones and spacious orchestral resonances, drifting and droning with glacial majesty, hardly recognizable as guitar much of the time. The first pieces were recorded in 1987; in 1994, a collection was released on Portugal's AnAnAnA, producing an hour’s worth of remarkable sonic equilibrium in this mode. With each subsequent reissue, however, aspects of this sound have been subtly revisited. For the 1998 Moikai CD, "AE 1", one of the earliest pieces conceived, was newly recorded; for the 2018 Drag City LP master, “Textura e Linhas Curvas” was included, "AER 7 E" was re-recorded and the material for "AE 2" was recorded for the first time ever. These performances were executed using the same processes as the original ones. For the current CD, “Loopability II” has been recalled from the AnAnAnA master, “Textura e Linhas Curvas” omitted and yet another brand new version of “AER 7E” inserted in place of the 2018 version. Incredibly, all of these changes augment Sound Mind Sound Body ’s expansive intent without altering its essential otherworldly atmosphere. Wave Field, released in 1995, was a departure from the first album into new composition methods involving the dirty textures of rock guitar, sounding in the open ears of many listeners (like Jim O'Rourke, who issued the disc in the US on dexter's cigar) as a synthesis of disparate elements a nexus where Alvin Lucier, Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine and Eno blend together. Here, the clangorous potential of the guitar was emphasized, giving a metallic edge to the two extended pieces and "radio edit" coda. The jacket paid subtle tribute to My Bloody Valentine, which, along with the radio edit, suggested a harmony between musical directions as wildly disparate as minimalist experimental and rock. Today, such a paradoxical intent is more widely considered as a part of the artist's purview. This allows the sounds of Wave Field and Sound Mind Sound Body to sit perfectly among the forward-reaching music of today as it continues to evolve in our ears, moving ever towards the next conception of listening space.

The Staircase
Sharpie Smile’s debut album has one question for you: is your heart good enough to take The Staircase?
Sharpie Smile is Dylan Hadley and Cole Berliner. They met in 2015, a pair of musically-adept nonconformist teenagers, forming a songwriting and performance duo. Writing initially for a project called Kamikaze Palm Tree, with Dylan on drums and Cole on guitar, they produced two albums of thorny, earwormy art-rock. While continuing to play shows and write, there was some session work with other acts (Cate Le Bon, A. Savage, Tim Presley’s White Fence). And then a shimmering new direction came into view...
For Sharpie Smile, that direction is up. The Staircase is a lush and energizing contemporary pop record, scaling an ambitious gradient of minimal/maximal electronic production and deep feels. It’s a dreamy and ethereal trip through something (you’re not sure what yet), on a radiant melodic raft. Reality is breaking and rebirth is happening, one piece at a time essential questions deconstructed and pieced together again. Like scanning a new x-ray image of yourself.
Finding is losing something else; there’s the shadow of ‘goodbye’ here, too. When Dylan sings “There is nothing I won’t miss” on “Love or Worship,” we feel broken up but if the breakup is with the old way of life (it is), then getting over the hump will provide its own sweet reward. Sharpie Smile’s passage there is one of sensuous breaths and serpentine soul-terrain, as Dylan’s blue vocal melodies drift glacially through a luminous wilderness of synth keys, guitars and percussion beats, cutting the melancholy milieu of New Romantic pop in sharp new relief.
On The Staircase, Sharpie Smile ascend through waves of sound art in a sophisticated musical craft all their own. Inspired by SOPHIE, 100 gecs, Oklou and other insane futurists, they allow the feeling of discovery to free their evolution, whenever needed. Their collaborators help facilitate and guide their astonishing transformations: The Staircase was engineered and produced by Cesar Maria, with additional engineering by Spencer Hartling, additional vocal engineering and production by Cairo Marques-Neto and mixing by Mikey Weiland
You’re in the eye of the storm. A refuge from the unrelenting, where the journey to clarity can be glimpsed, accessed and shared. Take The Staircase we’ll see you at the top.

For over a decade, Nechochwen has bridged the gap between history and mythology, folklore and personal journey. With “spelewithiipi”, the West Virginian duo returns to their earliest roots – trading the weight of distortion for the delicate power of dark folk.
“spelewithiipi” is the sound of rivers that remember, of trails worn by centuries of footsteps, of stories whispered through leaves and stone. Nechochwen weaves rich acoustic instrumentation with an immersive sense of place, crafting melodies steeped in the Eastern Woodlands’ indigenous past. Echoes of Nest, Tenhi, and October Falls resonate throughout, but the heart of the album belongs to the Ohio River Valley – the spelewithiipi, the Big Turkey River – its wild beauty flowing through every note.
This is an album of patience and reverence, composed slowly over eleven years, gathering shape and meaning. It is a tribute to forgotten pathways and the wisdom they carry. From the spectral visions of “othaškwa’alowethi behme” to the contemplative stillness of “Precipice of Stone”, each piece is a portal – to memory, to mystery, to the primordial pulse of the land itself.

Helheim, one of the founding pioneers of the Norwegian viking metal genre, are ready to release their 12th studio album “HrabnaR / Ad vesa”.
On this record, Helheim has made a split album with themselves. For the first time, the main songwriters V'gandr and H'grimnir have divided the album in two, where they solely take care of the vocals on the part they represent musically. This has resulted in two very different expressions - not uncommon for this band, but never as clearly as here.
The first half, “Hrabnar”, contains four stand-alone songs written by H’grimnir. Here, he’s looking back to the more aggressive path the band walked in their earlier years in the 90s, and at the same time keeping what has worked best on the latest albums. The second part, “Ad vesa”, is written by V’gandr about the four components in Norse mythology that we know collectively as the human soul. In preChristian Norway, the concept of the soul was not a singular, unified entity, but a composite of many elements, of which the four key components were Fylgja, Hamr, Hugr, and Hamingja.
Founded in 1992, Helheim are known and renowned all over the world for their authenticity and integrity when it comes to portraying their Norse heritage. Constantly growing and evolving, and staying clear of musical trends and fads, they’ve carved their own way for more than 30 years. This split album is no exception. Recorded in Duper and Solslottet Studio in 2024/2025, the album was engineered, produced, mixed and mastered by Iver Sandøy.

Swedish trio Death And Vanilla follow their much-praised re-imagined soundtracks to ‘Vampyr’ (2017) and ‘The Tenant’ (2018) with their interpretation of the soundtrack to cult 1968 TV show ‘Whistle And I’ll Come To You’ via Fire Records. At a time when post-ambient electronica and bedevilled folk music are co-habiting, and the public’s interest in Pagan rites and rituals has been sparked by a new generation of fans. The bizarre storyline of Whistle And I’ll Come To You seems even more pertinent… and strangely haunting.
The Jonathan Miller -adapted 1968 ghost story was originally part of BBC’s Omnibus series and featured Michael Horden as a fussy professor who discovers an ancient whistle which summons up the spirits. A black and white folkloric tale in the style of The Wicker Man, the original TV programme received rave reviews.
The esoteric live score was recorded at the Hypnos Theatre in Malmö. The 42-minute soundtrack utilises stuttering tape loops on ‘Intro’ before breathing new life into the primitive John Carpenter-like drum machine on ‘Supernatural Breakfast’, while ‘Walk On The Beach 2’ sounds like a hauntological rendition of a Broadcast classic. Indeed, that effect is amplified on ‘Nightmares’, with its swirling wind and other-worldly choral effect, before the feeling of some supernatural presence is suggested on the penultimate cut ‘Evidence Of Spiritualism’.

Nothing is ever easy for Black Spiders, never straightforward, there’s always a plethora of circumstances, bad luck and karma. Their last album, released in 2023, was titled ‘Can’t Die, Won’t Die’ and here we are at the dawn of 2025 and they’re still not fucking dead. Back with a brand-new album of high-voltage smashers, the Sheffield righteous rockers are set to release new album ‘Cvrses’ this coming February 28th on Dark Riders via Cargo Distribution. Featuring twelve new tracks of exactly the kind of soaring rock ‘n roll action we’ve all come to expect, love and demand from Black Spiders, their intentions are the same now as they were from the very the moment they started back in 2008 – be true to yourself, no compromise. “Stick to that formula and everything will be alright is what we hope and then with a little bit of luck life might surprise you,” says guitarist Pete Spiby. “It’s our fifth album, from the point of view of myself and Irwin. It’s our best. Our statement of intent has not changed from day one.” Recorded once again at Axis Studios in Doncaster with producer Matt Ellis behind the wheel, ‘Cvrses’ is, and of course all bands say this, very possibly their best album yet. It successfully distils everything that is thrilling and lifeaffirming about Black Spiders unique brand of thumping heaviness. Massive riffs, massive hooks, massive beats. It’s all massive.

Tim Barnes is a storied drummer, engineer and producer whose CV encompasses collaborations with a serious who’s-who of late 20th and early 21st century music. Most well known as one of the two drummers (alongside Glenn Kotche) on Jim O’Rourke’s seminal late 90s and early 2000s recordings, Tim has recorded, performed and collaborated with Tony Conrad, Faust, Alan Licht, P.G. Six , Silver Jews, Sonic Youth, Stereolab, The Tower Recordings, Ken Vandermark, Wilco, John Zorn and countless other artists working at the forward edge of improvised and experimental music. For many years he was the proprietor of the boutique Quakebasket label, which documented much of this music, as well as reissuing seminal works by Angus MacLise, the original drummer for the Velvet Underground. Now, the Quakebasket imprint has been revived to issue music Tim has recorded over the last several years with collaborators from throughout his music career. In 2021, Tim was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s at the age of 54, and he and his family went public with this immediately. The response from Tim’s network of friends and musical peers was overwhelming, but the lingering shutdown meant only remote and long-distance interactions were possible. Beginning in late 2021, a large body of recordings coordinated and assembled by Tim’s longtime friend Ken (Bundy) Brown, with whom Tim had worked in the past as a member of the group Pullman, early pioneers of the new Americana movement in the indie scene of the late 90s.
Lost Words features the playing of Joshua Abrams, Ken Brown, David Daneill, Darin Gray, David Grubbs, Glenn Kotche, Tara Jane O’Neil, Jim O’Rourke, Ken Vandermark and Britt Walford. Alongside its companion album, Noumena, Lost Words represents the culmination of years of work and demonstrates Tim’s infectious energy and depth as a percussionist across a broad sweep of styles.
“To be blessed not only with good friends but also such marvelously talented friends! Tim Barnes remains an inspiration not only as a world-class musician but also for bringing together artists who might otherwise not have met. And so it’s perfectly apt to see this awesome gathering of folks in a dreamt-of round robin of playing with Tim magisterially at the hub, beautifully and lovingly assembled by Bundy K. Brown.”
— David Grubbs
“I’ve been making music with Tim for over 25 years and have been lucky enough to not only double drum with him, but also improvise in many settings and make two duo recordings as well. He’s always been the brightest of lights musically and personally. I’ve learned so much from Tim —someone who I’ve always referred to as a musical encyclopedia—and am filled with joy that these recordings showcasing Tim’s artistry are becoming available so everyone can hear and be reminded of his talents.”
— Glenn Kotche
“ Tim Barnes has always been a gentle, yet commanding, presence in the micro-experimental-underground praxis of North American "new music”. His concepts of percussion moving into electro-acoustic phenomena have always been an exalted balance of the organic and the intellectual; the sound of pure thought transcended through inspiration. Regardless of this hyperbole, what is exacted in Barnes' improvisations and compositions is the constant essence of beautiful music.”
— Thurston Moore
Noumena is the second volume of music capturing percussionist Tim Barnes in a variety of collaborative settings recorded in extraordinary circumstances over the past few years.
Tim is a storied drummer, engineer and producer whose CV encompasses collaborations with a who’s who of late 20th and early 21st century music. He has recorded, performed and collaborated with countless artists, including Tony Conrad, Faust, Alan Licht, Jim O’Rourke, P.G. Six, Silver Jews, Sonic Youth, Stereolab, The Tower Recordings, Ken Vandermark, Wilco, John Zorn and many others. Through 2014, he was the proprietor of the boutique Quakebasket label, which documented a variety of projects at the forward edge of improvised and experimental music, including Tim’s duo with Glenn Kotche, On Fillmore Now, Quakebasket has been revived to issue Noumena and its companion album, Lost Words
In 2021, Tim was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s at the age of 54, and he and his family went public with this immediately. The response from Tim’s network of friends and musical peers was overwhelming, and beginning in late 2021, collaborative recordings were undertaken, coordinated and assembled by Tim’s longtime friend Ken (Bundy) Brown, with whom Tim had worked in the past as a member of the group Pullman, early pioneers of the new Americana movement in the indie scene of the late 90s.
The recordings for Noumena feature the playing of Joshua Abrams, Oren Ambarchi, Ken Brown, John Dieterich, Darin Gray, Glenn Kotche, Robert Carlos Lange, Ro(b)//ert Lundberg, Douglas McCombs, Matt Mehlan, Rob Mazurek, Tara Jane O’Neil, Jim O’Rourke, Chad Taylor, Thollem, Britt Walford and Mike Watt. As with Lost Words, Noumena cuts a dramatic swath through through a sweep of music styles, all of which are deepened by Tim’s versatile, intensely stimulated percussive feel.
“I first played with Tim Barnes around 1999 in New York City. Our personal and musical connections intensified greatly as the years rolled on; indeed, with folks like Tim the musical is the personal. Tim's performances, as a solo percussionist or collaborative drummer, have pushed me again and again to rethink my ideas of what it is to play music to and with other humans. He blows apart preconceived notions of what it is to play music by defining purpose through performance. And that purpose, to me, seems to be to illuminate and strengthen the power of communication and transformation inherent in every musical act. These two new Quakebasket releases demonstrate Tim's eloquence as a drummer, and his superior abilities as an ensemble participant. The very existence of these records, our opportunities to experience them, is testament to a hunger satisfied in Tim's closest colleagues.”
— Will Oldham
“ Tim Barnes is the touch. One of the monumental music-makers of our time, he’s brought his profoundly attuned sensitivity to countless musical experiences, live and on record over the past four decades. Tragically, Tim has been wrestling with a debilitating illness. When this reality began to assert itself aggressively, his good friend and fellow-traveler Ken Brown made a mission of getting Tim playing in as many scenarios as possible, keeping him in touch and attuned. Much of that is documented here, all a testament to Tim’s ineffable touch; to the ineffable touch that is the man. We listen in celebration and gratitude.”

Gabba Gabba We Accept You is a children's picture book that tells the story of how a kid who was bullied and felt like a misfit grew up to become a hero to so many as lead singer of The Ramones. This story speaks to one of the greatest silent majorities in the world – all the kids who feel a little off. It contains an essential message that the world of punk rock has always meant to communicate. All of us, regardless of our diverse and non-exclusive design, have something that we are meant to have and share, in a place that we can call our own. As children, these things may appear to many of us as problems and shortcomings. The challenging passages of life that brought J effrey Ross Hyman to the place where he became Joey Ramone provide a natural lesson to young folks navigating their way through the complexities of growing up.
Working in collaboration with visual artist Lucinda Schreiber, Jay Ruttenberg guides the story of Gabba Gabba We Accept You in unexpected directions, with Lucinda’s lyrical illustrations and colorful design opening the sense of possibility in what feels like the path less traveled on every page.
About the inspiration for this book, Jay says:
"My daughter just turned 11, so I've spent recent years in children's book land. I think I've read her 97 books about Abraham Lincoln and 12,984 about Ruth Bader Ginsburg. It occurred to me that a lot of the life lessons I've been trying to teach her weren’t learned through my family or school, but through punk stuff: the importance of being your own person, following your own radar instead of a group's, embracing uniqueness, etc. The Ramones, and in particular Joey, seemed like the perfect embodiment of that. So my big hope for the book is that it tells the story of Joey Ramone, but also, in kind of the biggest way, of what punk rock means, and how it might help a little kid wade through difficult social waters and be their own unique person."
Gabba Gabba We Accept You speaks in well-grounded and wise verbal and visual language to inform and affirm children – young ones and the adult children, alike – that their individual personalities have an inspired and inspiring place in the world. In the process of becoming and being a person, there’s no one set of rules. The sooner we all know that, the sooner we’ll find ourselves in a much better place.
