But seriously: not only are Sloan the rare band to make it to their 12th record, and not only are Sloan the rare band to make it to their 12th record with all four original members, and not only are Sloan the rare band to make it to their 12th album with four original members who are equally prolific songwriters, they’re arguably the only band to make it to their 12th album with four original members who are both equally prolific songwriters and all still working at the top of their respective games, sounding utterly ageless in the process. On 12, each of the four principals contribute three stellar songs that play to their core strengths: Patrick Pentland with the soaring rock anthems, Chris Murphy with the playful, participatory sing-alongs, Jay Ferguson with the jaunty prog-pop gems, and Andrew Scott with the whimsical innerspace explorations. CELEBRATING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO! With one mighty swing of the axe, the Byrds changed not only the face of rock 'n' roll but country music, as well, with their sixth album, 1968's Sweetheart Of The Rodeo.

Tired of dipping a toe into the genre, Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman added singer Gram Parsons and drummer Kevin Kelley and went for total immersion.

The baptism of country-rock was a natural with Parsons, former International Submarine Band frontman, now on board. And the repertoire was wide open for country classics by the Louvin Brothers ("The Christian Life") and Merle Haggard ("Life In Prison"), as well as Depression-era ballads (Woody Guthrie's "Pretty Boy Floyd") and honky tonk weepers cut by George Jones ("You're Still On My Mind"). The town wasn't big enough for both of them, of course, and Parsons soon split to form the Flying Burrito Brothers, but it sure was nice while it lasted!

We're proud to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this monumental recording in its original, stereo incarnation, cut directly from the original Columbia Recordings analog stereo masters, with perfect artwork restoration and meticulously faithful mastering.

Featuring all-original music recorded over a three day session at Havana's hallowed state-run Estudios Areito - one of the longest operating studios in the world and where seminal Cuban records have been made since the early '40s, and more contemporarily with the 1997 release of the Buena Vista Social Club album - the group's self titled debut feels like a heartfelt gift from the band to listener. Which is no coincidence being that Akokán is a Yoruba word used in Cuba meaning "from the heart", and indeed every song presented hear is just that.

By now, the story of how Jlin went from working in a steel factory in Gary, Indiana to being one of the most widely appreciated electronic musicians is well known. “Black Origami” was one of the most lauded albums last year.

Seriously prolific and seriously hard-working, she has toured constantly since its May 2017 release and despite being involved in a wide range of projects, still manages to find a balance and time to “do some personal healing and growing.”

Here we are over a year later with “Autobiography,” the score for her collaboration with renowned British choreographer Wayne McGregor (a collaboration arranged by Krakow’s Unsound). This isn’t technically her third album (that’s due to arrive in 2019 or 2020), but the soundtrack sflows with all the emotional peaks and troughs of a well-sequenced LP.

For Jlin, making music for dance is the fulfillment of one of her lifelong dreams – and remarkably, Company Wayne McGregor’s performance was the first show she’d ever seen. She describes the process of working with Wayne: “We first met face to face in October 2016 in a downtown Chicago hotel, talking for about a solid two hours. Immediately, I saw Wayne was very friendly and energetic. He’s brilliant, witty, and knows exactly what he wants; an absolute gem to work with. Before I even started composing for Autobiography, Wayne told me so gently that he trusts me completely with my direction of creating the score. That was the best feeling in the world. I would wake up at two in the morning and work until six in the evening until I completed all the pieces. We were both very happy with the outcome. Creating the score for an impeccable piece of work such as Autobiography changed my life as an artist.”

“Autobiography” is a highlight in an evolving and growing career. During the last year, Jlin has also become an in-demand remixer, securing her place among a roster of music heavyweights. Unsurprisingly, given her positive and outgoing nature, she also developed friendships with the artists she has remixed such as Björk, Max Richter and Ben Frost.

Jlin will be touring with Company Wayne McGregor performing “Autobiography” this year into next. She’s also completing a commission for the Kronos Quartet titled “Little Black Book.” She still approaches every performance “with the same attitude of doing my best to execute a good show, no more, no less. Doing my best is what’s most important to me.” She also still lives in Gary, Indiana, which keeps her grounded. She notes with her typical humility, “The local community is a little more knowledgeable of me now. But I don’t mind my community taking its time.”

By most bands’ fifth LP, the sound is pretty set. Parameters established. Refinement dissipated in favor of formulaic execution of what’s worked in the past. Fair enough. All Them Witches take a harder route.

In 2017, the Nashville four-piece offered what might’ve otherwise become their own template in their fourth album, Sleeping Through The War. Their second for New West Records following 2015’s mellow-vibing Dying Surfer Meets His Maker, Sleeping brought larger production value to dug-in heavy psych blues jamming with oversight from producer Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson).

After exploring new ground on 2013’s Lightning At The Door and 2012’s Our Mother Electricity as well as Dying Surfer, with Sleeping the band had arrived at something new, something sprawling, and grander-feeling than anything before it.

So naturally, in a year’s time they’ve thrown that all to the Appalachian wind, turned the process completely on its head and reversed paths: recording in a cabin in Kingston Springs, about 20 miles outside of Nashville on I-40, with guitarist Ben McLeod at the helm. Take that, expectation.

The result, mixed by Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith, Kurt Vile), is the most intimate, human-sounding album All Them Witches have ever recorded and another redefinition of the band. Introducing keyboardist/percussionist Jonathan Draper to the fold with McLeod, bassist/vocalist Charles Michael Parks, Jr., and drummer/graphic artist Robby Staebler, the new eponymous record isn’t self-titled by mistake. It’s the band confirming and continuing to develop their approach, in the shuffle of “Fishbelly 86 Onions,” the organ-laced groove of “Half-Tongue,” the tense build of “HJTC” and the fluid jam in closer “Rob’s Dream.”

It’s a reaction to being a “bigger” band. To playing bigger shows, bigger tours, etc. From the sustained consonants in Parks’ vocals to McLeod’s commanding slide in “Workhorse” and drifting melancholy at the outset of “Harvest Feast,” All Them Witches is their laying claim to the essential facets of their identity. And the urgency of these tracks – fast pushers and sleepy jams alike – is among their greatest strengths.

It’s a rawer delivery, as stage-ready as the band itself, and as ever, it captures All Them Witches in this moment. Is it who they’ll be tomorrow? Who the hell knows? Check back in and we’ll all find out together. That’s the whole idea.

John Mulaney is a comedian. Kid Gorgeous at Radio City is his third stand-up comedy concert film and album. He also made one in 2014 called The Comeback Kid and before that he made one in 2012 called New In Town and before that he made an album in 2008 called The Top Part. He was a writer at Saturday Night Live from 2008–2013 and in 2018 he returned to host the show. In 2016 he and Nick Kroll wrote and starred in Oh Hello on Broadway which was on Broadway. He then went on a stand-up tour called Kid Gorgeous which culminated in seven sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall. He currently stars on Netflix’s animated magical-realist puberty thriller Big Mouth. He has acted exclusively on shows that he or his close friends have created. John has auditioned for such films as Downsizing where he was chastised by the director for being too loud. John was born in the American Middle West towards the end of the 20th Century. He is 6 ft. tall and lives in New York City with his wife Anna who is cooler than him.

This album is called Kid Gorgeous at Radio City. It is the album of the Netflix concert film I did called John Mulaney Kid Gorgeous at Radio City which was the culmination of a 150 date stand-up comedy tour called John Mulaney Kid Gorgeous. It was recorded on February 17, 2018. The show was directed by Alex Timbers.

Scott Pask built the set which you cannot see on the album but, boy oh boy, it was beautiful. I recorded this album at Radio City Music Hall. Radio City Music Hall is a big goddamn theater where the Rockettes perform and other people have too. The stage has three hydraulic lifts that allow humans and things to rise from the sub-basment to the stage level which is where the audience can see you. I rode one of them every show we did, but I was offstage so you couldn’t tell. Again this is not going to affect the album. Jon Brion played Radio City’s Mighty Wurlitzer at all seven shows. The Mighty Wurlitzer is not a powerful German wizard but rather an organ with 58 ranks and 4,178 pipes lining the whole concert hall.

When he played the thing it sounded like he was playing the whole building and the ground shook like God or Gozer/Zool was about to appear. Jon Brion’s beautiful original theme, recorded on that organ in that room, is on this album. Max Silvestri appeared on each show. He was so funny. He is a great human being. Michael Berkowitz made these shows and this whole tour happen. Mike Berkowitz walks through kitchens. Thank you Mike. And thank you to Cara Masline, David Miner and John Skidmore. And thank you to my Dad for writing half my act through a series of unprompted statements throughout my childhood. I love you Dad. This album was recorded almost 45 years to the day that David Bowie performed at Radio City. I didn’t know that until that afternoon and I got all emotional. I am grateful to all the audiences who came to see me but I do all of this to make my wife Anna laugh. I hope you enjoy the album. It’s a bunch of stories about how I remember life being, or at least feeling, towards the end of the 20th Century and the beginning of the 21st. Then there are a few loud complaints about petty things. Then other jokes and stuff. I wrote and performed all of them. I like doing stand-up comedy very much.

Young Romance, the new album from Cologne, Germany-based Marius Lauber AKA Roosevelt, will be released September 28th, 2018 via City Slang. While his acclaimed debut album was deeply rooted in club culture, Young Romance sees the 27-year-old producer and songwriter embracing a newfound love for bigger, bolder, and sunnier pop songs.

Lauber expresses escapism and wistfulness in equal measure, documenting his own artistic transitions and personal experiences along the way. “I ended up processing a lot of emotions that I felt during my youth,” he says. “Faded relationships that haunted me for years, being on the road for what seemed like forever, and the constant search of a place to call home.” The euphoric first single “Under The Sun” drips with sundrenched nostalgia while a melancholia lurks just below the surface.

In the two years since the release of his self-titled debut album that reached the Top 20 of Billboard’s Dance/Electronic chart and earned praise from outlets including Pitchfork, NPR, Entertainment Weekly, The Wall Street Journal, Stereogum, Paste, DJ Mag, and more, Roosevelt became an in-demand remixer (CHVRCHES, Rhye, and Glass Animals, to name a few) while maintaining a relentless touring schedule (his first ever headlining U.S. tour included multiple sold-out dates and a performance at NYC’s Governors Ball Music Festival).

Young Romance was written and finished in 6 months and features his first collaboration with Washed Out (“Forgive”). Captain Beefheart's 1967 debut album Safe As Milk introduced the world to a one-of-a-kind visionary whose unique output had no precedent in contemporary music. Beefheart, aka Don Van Vliet, filtered the raw influence of the blue and R&B through his own singular musical sensibility and left-field lyrical wordplay, and surrounded himself with some of the most talented and inventive young musicians around. The result was an album that, even in the heady year in which it was released, sounded like nothing else, and the stage for one of rock's most iconoclastic and idiosyncratic careers.

With backup from the first, and perhaps finest, incarnation of Beefheart's legendary Magic Band (including future solo star Ry Cooder on guitar and teenage drum prodigy John "Drumbo" French), and production from future studio superstar Richard Perry, Beefheart unveils his fully-formed sound and vision on such landmark tracks as "Zig Zag Wanderer," "Abba Zaba," "Dropout Boogie," "I'm Glad" and "Electricity" (covered two decades later by Sonic Youth).

Neville Jacobs is the convergence of two well-worn paths of two diverse and singular artists. Spiby is probably most well known for being the leader of Black Spiders - renowned for the face melting rock n roll and unmatchable swagger. Please welcome, ladies and gentlemen, Failed Magician. It's the title of Spiby’s new solo release. There comes a time in a man’s life when the blues become mandatory listening and this in turn has informed his new songs. “I have sorrow in my pocket and exorcising the ghosts is a way out of the darkness,” he says. “There were a lot of deaths in rock during 2017 that made me think about mortality, depression and life. There's a thread that goes through all of this and it’s basically a collection of domestic blues songs, sometimes seen from both sides of the story. “Sabbath and Zeppelin have a lot to answer for, as I guess do the Beatles and the Stones, for embedding that feeling and influence into their music,” he continues.

“Everyone that has since been influenced by them, directly or indirectly. Spiby called upon fans to fund his solo outing via Pledgemusic and smashed his goal to bits. “That’s when shit got real, as they say,” explains Spiby. “I had a bit of a panic on, getting the songs together and finished; things started to take more of a shape I liked and could sort of understand. It started out so simple and I made it really complicated for myself and recorded 30 odd songs.” For his next trick, he assembled a crack team to help bring his ideas to life in the studio with Matt Ellis at the production console. “It’s quite a mixed bunch of losers really,” he says. “. “If it’s the last thing I ever get to do, recording wise, I’ll die a very happy man,” says Spiby of his solo debut.

estorations has always been a band keenly aware of its surroundings and LP5000 is just that: seven songs written and recorded during a time of transition. It’s a record about displacement. It’s about feeling complacent and coming to the sudden realization that maybe things aren’t as solid as they’d seemed—in politics, in personal relationships, and in the different corners of their hometown of Philadelphia.

It’s about knowing now that if you don’t constantly work 24/7 to keep things together, they can easily fall apart. One long, sustained “Oh, fuck.”

ecorded with longtime collaborator Jon Low (The National, Frightened Rabbit, The War On Drugs), LP5000 is everything that fans have come to love about Restorations over the course of its decade-long career: anthemic heartland rockand-roll replete with mile-wide riffs, psychedelic chooglin’and too many guitars.

During production, the band took the time to examine these seven songs, rip them apart, and rebuild them from the bottom up. “We spent a ton of time deconstructing, trying different arrangements and exploring the material in a way we’ve never had time for previously,” says frontman Jon Loudon. “What we came into the studio with and what we left with were two completely different albums.”

t seems like a moot point to talk about Restorations’ future. For a band who’s spent so many years writing songs about the future unknown, they’re just happy to be in the present, reunited with Tiny Engines for LP5000, who are also celebrating their 10-year anniversary. Ten years is a long time for any band, but for Loudon, Dave Klyman, Ben Pierce, Dan Zimmerman and Jeff Meyers, Restorations is more than being in a band; it’s being a part of a family—a Philadelphia music scene that’s grown to support and be supported by hundreds of musicians, fans and friends. That kind of support is timeless.

About Following hard on the heels of BBE delving into the archives of Detroit’s Strata Records and delivering their widely acclaimed and hugely in-demand exploration of J-Jazz, comes another crate digger’s delight- Ralph Thomas’ ‘Eastern Standard Time’, which dropped the USA back in in 1980, on the obscure Zebra Jazz imprint.

This is the is the kind of “spiritual’ jazz gem that appears on You Tube and upon checking it out on Discogs reveals a price well in excess of £150.00. To have it widely available in its original vinyl format, as well as digitally and on CD, is a real treat. So, who is Ralph Thomas?

The self-produced ‘Eastern Standard Time’ features Thomas on baritone, alto and tenor saxophones as well as flute and percussion. He describes himself as a practicing ethno-musicologist who’s musical vision evolved during the Sixties and it’s Thomas’ multifaceted, global approach that gives the music on Eastern Standard Time’ an engaging and distinct flavour.

"My music has always been open to different cultures and sounds Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Mexican, Peruvian, American, Hebrew, Turkish, African, Indian and Japanese,” declares the Chicago born musician. While attending the Chicago conservatory of music in 1969 he became a member of the Chicago A.A.C.M, studying with master musicians Phil Cohran and Richard Muhal Abrams. He also recorded with well-known blues legends, Howlin' Wolf and Mighty Joe Young for the Cadet imprint of Chess records.

In 1974, he moved to Los Angeles and was employed as a session player with both 20th Century Fox and Motown – where he recorded with Marvin Gaye, Jermaine Jackson, Smokey Robinson and Rick James. In the early Eighties he was working for Quincy Jones Productions appearing on the soundtrack of Roots and The Color Purple but a passion for reggae music led him to Jamaica where he recorded with producer Jack Ruby and artists like Augustus Pablo and Gregory Isaacs.

In ’86 he moved to NYC where he collaborated with Boogaloo legend Johnny Colon and played with like-minded musical explorers Sun Ra, Don Cherry and Olatunji.

However, by 1993 his restless spirit carried him to Paris where studied Ethnomusicology and performed with trumpeter Mra Oma and film-maker Ranaivo-Rajaona Hery. There were also gigs with percussionist Trilok Gurtu as well as drummer Sunny Murray and saxophone legend Archie Shepp. Upon moving to the South of France Thomas ran an art gallery and initiated his MusArt project – which has since toured in the US, Canada and Japan

One Eleven Heavy celebrates the joyous, jam-propelled boogie of cosmic American rock as made famous by the likes of the Grateful Dead, Little Feat and Crazy Horse.

Singer-songwriter James Jackson Toth (better known by his nom de plume, Wooden Wand) and guitarist Nick Mitchell-Maiato (better known as the founder of UK psychedelic rock band Desmadrados Soldados De Ventura) met while James was on tour in the UK, back in 2008. They hit it off right away.

They not only discovered a shared love of Crazy Horse, The Grateful Dead, Little Feat, NRBQ and Dylan, but also realized they'd arrived at their mutual tastes via an uncanny trajectory through teenage metal goofin', early adulthood Royal Trux obsession, years exploring the weirdo crevices of the improvisational psychedelic underground and a slow ascent back to the surface of celebratory, heart-wrenching guitar music.

In the years that followed, during a number of extended tour hangs in both Manchester, UK and Lexington, KY, they began talking about the idea of forming a band together. A band that would blend James's bent for plaintive, sun-scorched lyricism and Nick's craving for a return to the Cosmic American musical landscape that encouraged wilful abandonment of simple rock 'n' roll song structures into ecstatic, exploratory jams.

The band’s personnel is completed by bassist Dan Brown (Royal Trux), drummer Ryan Jewell (Ryley Walker) and keyboardist Hans Chew (Hiss Golden Messenger) and its debut platter, ​Everything’s Better​, comes right out the gate with an overt plot to force mainstream re-examination of the sociopolitical potential of classic-sounding roots rock and good-time music.

Five Mitchell Maiato songs, five Toth songs, and gang vocals that feature the gravelly talents of keyboardist Hans Chew, as well as the two songwriters, ‘Everything’s Better’ is a 38-minute ride to the top of the mountain, where the campfire is burning and the liberty caps are just kicking in.

With positive early press, One Eleven Heavy is being touted alongside Garcia Peoples, Trummors, Howlin’ Rain and Wet Tuna as part of a ‘Neu-Jam’ revolution that hints at a broader set of musical influences and a historical perspective that seeps into the jams. Started as a collaborative project between childhood friends Max Rodriguez (guitar), Joshua Brandler (bass), Marc Goymour (keys) and Andrea Gucel (drums), Animanz was formed in 2013 when they threw themselves out into London’s multi-layered music scene. Since then the band have grown to encompass a genre smashing collective which welcomes guest performers from all over the world, and the musicians they’ve met along this varied path have provided the band with a vehicle to help them develop their multitextured approach to rhythm.

Animanz explain: “We write party tunes, so the groove and energy are the most important things. Everything else just fits around that.”

The album is also very conscientious, and finds itself rooted deeply within our times, like London it is music to both get lost in and inspired by what the band call “a melting pot; an all-inclusive party for everyone”.

Inspired by the relationship between afrobeat and protest which Fela Kuti epitomised, Animanz use emblems of modern technology to theorise a systemised digital world. Tracks like “TV” and “Disconnect” deal with television screens and Wi-Fi as their subject matter, while “Speak Out” is a ballad to those who complain about politics but do nothing to implement change. “There are plenty of modern frustrations within the ever-changing world of technology” Animanz tell us. As a whole, ‘Exotic Other’ stands as a funk manifesto for the people, a shout to wake up and thrive.

Norma Waterson began her career in music in the 1960s with various family members eventually seeing the family name The Watersons becoming the group name. The band were first heard on record in 1964 on the Topic anthology New Voices, followed by the classic Frost and Fire LP, a calendar of Ritual and Magical songs in 1965.

This new Topic Records release, An Introduction to Norma Waterson draws entirely from her distinguished Topic career. It opens appropriately with ‘Seven Virgins’ from Frost & Fire, The Watersons’ spellbinding debut album proper. The folk scene was largely underground in 1965 and the idea of preserving traditional song had become something of a mission for some performers but there was nothing academic about The Watersons approach to the forgotten songs they unearthed and revived. It was vibrant and fun and The Watersons sounded like nobody else.

The same might be said of any of the selections presented here, all essentially family affairs where the predominant voice is Norma’s. Songs are drawn from Norma’s catalogue of material from both her solo recordings as well as material from The Watersons, Waterson:Carthy and collaborations with Oliver Knight and her daughter Eliza Carthy.

Tracks include ‘When First I Came To Caledonia’, ‘Once In A Blue Moon’ and ‘Song For Thirza’ which originally featured on Shining Bright: The Songs of Lal & Mike Waterson a tribute to the extraordinary 1972 album Bright Phoebus.

Norma was awarded an MBE in 2003 for the commitment and contribution to music and in 2016 also saw Norma receive a life time achievement award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Seven is the magic number. The Arizona band's Session is comprised of three utterly bewitching tracks that invoke images of the sandy plains of the Sonoran desert which they call home, yet also draped in an influence of traditional Eastern psychedelia. Complete with the band's signature meandering violins, droning vocals and sprawling instrumentation, the live recording of the Fuzz Club Session allows the tracks to take on an even more hypnotic form. Baltimore-based multi-instrumentalist composer Andrew Bernstein returns to Hausu Mountain for the release of his first full-length LP, An Exploded View of Time.

As a member of the ecstatic minimalist quartet Horse Lords, Bernstein’s saxophone leads weave together with traditional rock instrumentation into spiraling melodic torrents, while his forays into auxiliary percussion animate the band’s grooves into new permutations of polyrhythmic complexity. Bernstein’s solo LP follows his Cult Appeal tape (HAUSMO39) from 2015, building on the style of extended saxophone performance that he has previously presented in programs as a complement to his algorithmic work and sound art. An Exploded View sidesteps the algorithmic component of Bernstein’s practice, focusing entirely on sessions for alto saxophone that bend time and the physical limits of human performance to his iron will. Recorded over the course of one day as a series of live takes and presented with minimal post-production, the album lays out Andrew Bernstein’s compositions as improbable schematics traced in the moment by one body and mind in a state of total unity.

One could be forgiven for believing at first that An Exploded View of Time’s ceaselessly tumbling billows of tone and selfconsuming recursive mantras are the product of loop pedal or delay manipulation, when in fact Bernstein performed each session in real time using only his saxophone (with the exception of the track “Deus Ex Machina” which utilizes a custom resonance software that he developed in the music coding language Pure Data). As such, his pieces stand not only in the realm of heady minimalist composition, but within the physical world as one human body engaged in a marathon of dexterity, breath control, manual repetition, and constant self-regulation. Bernstein’s protracted circular breathing techniques and superhuman finger work stun at every turn, as he flits between passages of glistening major key bliss and tumultuous expanses of overblown skronk.

He finds space in his sessions for a multitude of moods and techniques, ranging from constantly shifting updown runs through mystifying scales to moments of baroque self-harmonization in which key notes shine as melodies that hover between the lines over the deluge of notes. His music channels the spirit and performative gestures of 20th century minimalist works like Terry Riley’s “Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band” and La Monte Young’s saxophone playing on early Theatre of Eternal Music recordings, while drawing inspiration from a lineage of deep listening, drone, and extended technique pieces by the likes of Pauline Oliveros, Henry Flynt, and Tony Conrad. The physical reality of his sax performances draw comparisons to Colin Stetson, Evan Parker, and Gianni Gebbia.

True Fluorescent Skeleton is an hour long exploration of memory, machinery, rust, ghosts, cybernetics, and neon while pushing into the utter sonic horizon of the tenor saxophone. James Young (composer) and Tyrone Page, Jr. (sax), got to know each other through musical projects in and around the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, MD. A couple of degrees later and they began this nearly four year adventure working on the Fluorescent Skeleton.

The idea for TFS was sparked through an encounter with Jasper Johns’s Regrets (2012), a room-sized art work of false starts and dead ends: paintings, drawings, and prints intermingle with the tools that made them and sketches that preceded them - all pointing to the same subject. This skeleton is similarly arranged. Each track orbits the same single, musical theme, converging narratively and harmonically onto a single melody. Each track is a possibility for development, an abandoned waypoint from a spectral core.

Ty is pushed to the extremes of his technique, building grooves of pulsed multi-phonics, marking the limits of breath and endurance, and channeling intense, patient focus into expanding the acoustic universe of the saxophone.

6 Stardust Birthday Party is about human evolution. Specifically, one humans evolution: mine, Ron Gallo. That’s the name my parents gave me. Hi. At one point, I was a very lost mid-twenties person living in Philadelphia, in a relationship with someone struggling with mental health issues and crippling heroin addiction. I was asleep. I didn’t know how to handle my life. I was also writing songs for HEAVY META - my “frustrated with humanity” album. I laugh about it all now, but at the time it all felt like an absolute nightmare. It was the perfect doorway to look inside the place I’d been avoiding forever: myself.

Stardust Birthday Party is about what is happening underneath all of this life stuff. My path inward. The details of my path are pointless because everyone’s path is different. It is about me sitting with myself for the first time and confronting the big question “WHAT AM I, REALLY?” It’s about the love and compassion for all things that enters when you find out you are nothing and everything. I think at one point I wanted to change the world, but now I know I can only change myself, or rather just strip away everything that is not me to reveal the only thing that’s ever been there. And that’s what this album is about, it’s me dancing while destroying the person I thought I was, and hopefully forever.

In the liner notes of John Coltrane’s album A Love Supreme (which we pay tribute to on this album) he wrote: “During the year 1957, I experienced, by the grace of God, a spiritual awakening which was to lead me to a richer, fuller, more productive life. At that time, in gratitude, I humbly asked to be given the means and privilege to make others happy through music.”

That’s it. That is the pure essence of creativity. Someone embodying what they have realized about themselves and the world that surrounds them. That is why this album exists.

Marie Davidson is a Canadian electronic producer and performer set to release her album “Working Class Woman” on 5th October 2018 via Ninja Tune.

‘Working Class Woman” is the Montreal-based producer’s fourth and most self-reflective record to date. Mining Italo Disco, protoindustrial and electro influences, leadened with a gut-punching weight, make the record more visceral than any she’s released before. Industrial heaviness is balanced by Davidson’s spoken text (rather than spoken word) dark, textured soundscapes are counterweighted by statements that carry a darkly humorous edge, making observations on both aspects of club culture as well as more oblique critiques of the modern world.

Marie is a member of Essaie Pass with husband Pierre Guerineau (DFA Records) and DKMD (Giallo Disco Records) Remix for “So Right” from John Talabot released 30th August, along with other remixes in the campaign.

Pianist Omar Sosa and violinist-vocalist Yilian Cañizares have come together to create Aguas, a beautiful and very personal album. Featuring their compatriot, percussionist Inor Sotolongo, Aguas reflects the perspectives of two generations of Cuban artists living outside their homeland, interpreting their roots and traditions in subtle and unique ways. Songs range from the poignant to the exuberant, and are expressive of the exceptional musical chemistry, poetic sensibilities, and originality of the artists.

The material on Aguas is an inventive and engaging mix of the artists’ Afro-Cuban roots, Western classical music, and jazz. The album is dedicated to Water, and especially to Oshun, the Goddess of Love and Mistress of Rivers in the Lucumí tradition of Yoruba ancestry known in Cuba as Santería – a spiritual practice important to both artists. As water is synonymous with life, and energy, and strength, and space, the music of the album is inspired by the important influences of water – its hidden powers, its infinite transmutations, and its relentless creation. There is a sense, as well, for Omar and Yilian, of how water represents both separation from, and nostalgia for, the land of their birth.

The 11 tracks on Aguas were written and produced by Omar and Yilian, and recorded and mixed at Artesuono Studios in Udine, Italy by Stefano Amerio.

Peel Dream Magazine is the nom de plume of New York City-based musician Joe Stevens. A nod to BBC Radio 1 legend John Peel, arbiter of all things underground, Peel Dream Magazine is highly evocative of a certain strain of independent music. As Stevens explains, “I wanted to create an outlet for subcultural wanderers. Something you can subscribe to."

Stevens harkens back to the early 1990s, when The Velvet Underground resurged as an inspiration to a new set of bands wielding synthesizers, off-set guitars, and a political bent. The Peel Dream experience is defined by a gentle, fuzzy psychedelia —it’s a hypnotic bit of mod-ish lo-fi pop, recalling the best of early Stereolab, Lilys, and other shaggy haired kids with vintage fuzz pedals, slim trousers, and good record collections. Stevens conjures a distinctly 90s vision of the 60s. Not the actual 60s, mind you, but perhaps a 60s daydreamed about from the creature comforts of a suburban living room. An abstraction. Shag carpet turned to bowl cut. Jean jackets — disaffected but wholesome youth. It's not irony, exactly. It's the love that comes from loving. And a bit of whimsy. It's the 90s, again. Post-post.

Written and recorded over a four-week period in the fall of 2017, Peel Dream Magazine’s debut album Modern Meta Physic fixates on the New Age universe of the Catskills region of New York. Stevens deals in generic bohemian fare — Far East philosophy, Native American tradition, mid-century modern cool — as he appraises the world according to privileged urban expats who increasingly call the upstate paradise home.

Leading off the album, "Qi Velocity" is a metronomic take on French pop that yields to a lush chorus reminiscent of Belle and Sebastian. “Deetjen’s," named after the much-loved bed & breakfast in Big Sur, would fit snugly on Unrest's best Teen Beat material. "Due to Advances in Modern Tourism" displays a soft take on Neu!, while the organ that enters could be a sly wink to Steve Reich's "Four Organs.” There is an economy to these tracks — everything is distilled down to it’s essential elements, no gestures are wasted, no superfluous ornamentation taking up space.

While Stevens is more than happy to show his influences on his sleeve — mind you, they're great influences — it's clear Peel Dream Magazine isn't just a “sound." The guy can write songs. Where he goes next is anybody's guess.

The A-Side leads with Dre’s “California Love”. Combining the character of the original with the G Funk sound that dominates the West Coast hip hop scene, Sly5thAve’s arrangement of “California Love” unites the realms of orchestral and hip hop music in this welcome outing. He explains: “One of my favorite things about arranging hip-hop/pop music for an orchestra is the opportunity to build up and take the composition through different worlds that are not completely unrelated but also not readily apparent.” Under his direction, the undeniably smooth arrangements amplify the lessons in Dre’s music which are held at their core.

The B-Side holds a cover of Snoop Dogg’s “Shiznit”. Championing an iconic bassline, Sly5thAve’s arrangement illuminates a suspense-filled horn section, sidling up against a smooth flute and Moog counterpoint before a cosmic string-addled vibrato takes control. In this recording, Sly5thAve calls on highly respected synth player Jesse Fischer.

The album resulted from a concert called “Cali-Love”, assembled for the non-profit music charity, Playing For Change – and was dedicated to building a music school in Compton. Behind a solid classical formation, D’Alberto uses electronics as a means to amplify the expressive power of acoustic instruments such as piano, strings, drums of oriental tradition, gongs, and Tibetan quartz bells. Leifur James A Louder Silence

Producer and multi-instrumentalist Leifur James is set to release his debut album ‘A Louder Silence’ on 5th October 2018 through Late Night Tales’ artist label Night Time Stories. ‘A Louder Silence’ is threaded by nuanced electronic instrumentals with influences of jazz and blues. Rich, soulful vocals and piano are used sparingly; making way for cascades of dubby synths, ambience and moody jazz breaks.

Released in 2017, debut single ‘Time’ was described as “the most exciting music in a decade” by BBC Radio 6 Music DJ Guy Garvey. XLR8R has written of his “uncanny ability to deliver emotional cuts”, Stamp The Wax called him “an exciting prospect” and a live session for Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM heard tracks from the album given their first airing.

Growing up in London, James began to draw inspiration from the experimentation of modern day electronic producers and the soulful expression of jazz and blues legends. Although his formative years were in classical music; playing the cello under the influence of his pianist mother and Kate Bere, a pupil of the late great Jacqueline du Pré.

The EP's sun-bleached pop was received warmly by critics and fans — Pitchfork wrote that she “dances gracefully on the edges of past and present, of waking life and dreams.” Erika now returns to the intimate pop project with the ​Scars​ EP, a dreamlike collection of tracks that she describes as “a gateway to an inner world.” As the title suggests, there’s something bittersweet at play on Scars​; the immediate trauma might have passed, but the vestiges remain. Across the EP, Erika wraps her confessional compositions in a serene haze, creating an atmosphere that’s warm, yet wistful.

CUTS returns six months after the brooding ‘EXIST’ EPs – his debut for Village Green Recordings – with ‘A Slow Decay’, summoning a trio of widescreen electronic compositions in response to global political and environmental breakdown. The EP precedes a debut album.

“We are living in the age of the Anthropocene and it feels like everything is in decline. We’re in a moment where extinction is regular. I wanted to make the audio of this record reflect these frailties.” – Anthony Tombling Jr, CUTS. ‘A Slow Decay’ both reflects and utilises the frailties of the planet’s current state of existence. Using field recordings of ice collapsing from glaciers, CUTS thread these momentary, dramatic events – part of a much more significant phase of mankind’s history – directly into the DNA of the music, sculpting rhythmic elements out of geological transformation.

A stark sense of urgency permeates the music – sometimes chaotic and alarming, with siren-like melodies, volatile, stuttered beats, and synthetic gales of melody that wrap themselves around glacial percussion.

Elsewhere the sense of precarity is subtler, enveloped in gaseous chords that swell and evaporate, or ethereal and dense guitars and distant vocals – all hallmarks of previous CUTS material, here honed into a concise conceptual set.

CUTS’ music has been described as “divingbell-deep growls to sky-scraping, synthetic peals” by Crack Magazine with The 405 noting “clear influences from the powerful build of Mogwai tracks to the My Bloody Valentineesque use of distortion and distant vocals” On CUTS ‘EP1’ released by Invada, The Quietus wrote “the buzz and hum of fed-back electronics get underscored by the undoubtedly sinister-feeling creep of industrial percussive mechanisms”.

‘EXIST’ includes the track ‘Bunsen Burner’, in original and Redux form, which can be heard on the Ivor Novello winning original soundtrack to Alex Garland’s sci fi masterpiece Ex Machina, featuring in the film’s memorable climactic final scene. The track also featured in the finale of JJ Abrams cult hit US TV show Person Of Interest.

CUTS has performed at ATP, Simple Things, Drill Festival and played with Fuck Buttons, James Holden, Haxan Cloak and Wire.

Born in Oklahoma, raised in the Pacific Northwest, and based in Detroit, Kat Gardiner carries a restlessness through her writing that's been honed by a lifelong search for roots.

Her debut collection of short fiction, Little Wonder, springs from the year Gardiner spent in Anacortes, Washington, during her early twenties. Young and idealistic, she opened a coffee shop and music venue with her husband in the hopes of finding a home in the city's artistic community. The experiment lasted exactly one year. Gardiner closed the coffee shop and moved away from Anacortes, ending a stressful and dreamlike chapter in her life.

Writing in short, interconnected fragments Gardiner revisits the year spent in Anacortes with a new sense of perspective. Little Wonder reads like a series of love notes to a former self, or a collection of Polaroids made golden with age. Gardiner's characters navigate frustration, loss, and heartbreak, but they also come into new versions of themselves, a transformation they may not recognize in the moment. Through poignant vignettes furnished generously with detail, Gardiner looks into what it means to enter the world and realize that it is not nearly as amenable to change as an optimistic young person might think. With Little Wonder, Gardiner has shed light on the idea that joy and pain are often two sides of the same coin — and that being alive in this world can necessitate embracing both.
