This Issue: Marc Jetton at Sargent House

How did you personally get started in the music industry?
My very first job in the music industry was doing Indie Retail Marketing at Interscope Records. I worked with indie record stores and coalitions on different marketing initiatives. I learned a lot and met so many great people in the indie retail community during that time, most of which are still thriving today.
When and where did the label begin?
Sargent House was initially founded as a management company in 2006 by my partner Cathy Pellow, eventually becoming a label out of necessity to help the band Rx Bandits get out of a bad deal and release their album …And The Battle Begun. I came over a short time after to help build the label side of the company.
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
I don’t think there’s a specific genre, we work with artists on music we love. A lot of it is forward thinking or left of center, but that’s just what we’re drawn to and find most compelling.
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
Sargent House was named after a historic home in Echo Park that Cathy owned. It was an amazing four story house that doubled as our office and a place where artists would stay.
How has the label changed since it started?
We’ve obviously expanded our roster and grown as a company, but our philosophy has remained the same; we only work with music we’re passionate about from artists we believe in and strive to help them make a living doing what they love.
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
Passionate and engaged. We’re so lucky to work with artists that create powerful and intricate records, and I think it encourages fans to experience the entire album more often than engaging with individual singles. The music often demands an actively listening experience vs something to passively have on in the background. I also believe that’s why we’ve consistently seen fans choose vinyl over any other format.
Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find (on the label or otherwise) you’d like to rave about?
We look everywhere, but recommendations are usually the best, especially when they come from our artists. The latest signing to Sargent House is Hammok, an incredible new band out of Norway. The album they’ve just completed is phenomenal, extremely excited for everyone to hear it in 2026.
We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?
Choosing just one is tough because I truly love all of our releases, but I’ll pick Russian Circles Memorial. It was our second official release with them and marked a huge step for the band, both sonically and gaining more fans. It also capped off an incredible year for the label. The guys in Russian Circles are awesome people and total pros; they’ve helped pave the way for so many bands and are a prime example of how to continuously build your fanbase with each release.
What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?
The Armed ULTRAPOP was a blast! It was originally scheduled for release in 2020 but moved it to 2021 because of the pandemic so we had a bit more time to cultivate ideas. Everything was based on the fan experience and interaction; Between the ARG game the band created, the fan funded billboards that ran in major cities, incredible press coverage and the full concert film we produced at the Masonic Temple in Detroit, the hype for that album continued to build and ultimately delivered. It was a lot of fun to work on and felt rewarding to see it be successful. It was released in April 2021, right when people were starting to get vaccinated, so there was a really positive and optimistic vibe around everything, which probably contributed to how engaging it all felt. The Armed’s new album The Future is Here and Everything Needs To Be Destroyed has a more cynical take on the state of our collective experience right now, but arguably even more cathartic.
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
The digital marketplace is obviously the most significant transformation. When I began, legal downloads were considered an insignificant part of the overall business. Everyone in the industry, including stores, were concerned with the increased adoption of piracy.
What’s more remarkable is the resilience and adaptability of independent record stores. They’ve continued to innovate and flourish regardless of whatever new formats or options pop up, and will continue to thrive while large corporations use music as a loss leader to sell other shit. It’s the sense of community built around these stores that makes them irreplaceable, and we’re so incredibly thankful for the support they’ve shown us and the artists we work with over the past 20 years!
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or sohow would you like the label to be remembered?
Who really thinks this planet will be around in 50 years, let alone 5 billion? I’m hopeful that we’ll get through the next few years without the world exploding, but I truly believe so many of the artists we’ve worked with have created albums that will stand the test of (remaining) time.

The early 90’s were an incredible time for Shoegaze fans, and the 12” EP was the format that delivered the most vital music of the era. Usually just 4 songs, these EPs were released as quickly as possible after being recorded, and had tracks that were often not found on the subsequent full-length LP.
We here at Outer Battery are looking to bring back the heady days of the 12” EP, and what better band to do that with than Swervedriver!
Back with their first new music in over 5 years, with 2 tracks recorded with Mark Gardener from Ride and the other 2 recorded by YouTube star Rick Beato, The World’s Fair EP is classic Swervedriver, with Beatles-tinged hits like Pack Yr Vision and psychedelic freak-outs like The World’s Fair. This EP, pressed on orange vinyl, is not to be missed!

Se Amaba Así — which loosely translates to "The way they loved" — sees Buscabulla co-founders Raquel Berrios and Luis Del Valle devoting their eagerly awaited second album to the ruthless examination of their private life as a couple, instrumentalizing myriad strains of Latin music to explore their most intimate struggles as both artists and lovers.

“A resplendent debut LP... Regresa marks a bittersweet comeback — followed by a gratifying, disco comedown.”
ROLLING STONE
“With Regresa, Buscabulla speaks not only to Puerto Rico’s many challenges, but to resilience, togetherness, displacement, and longing experienced across the diaspora.”
BANDCAMP
“Listening to Berrios sing is a study in the beauty of the Spanish language. Her articulation exudes the emotions packed within the songs that address more the feeling of living in a land of tumult, than the tumult itself. The result is something more universal that can be felt beyond language barriers.”

SYDNEY MINKSY SARGEANT LUNGA

1.
11.

OVERVIEW
Lunga is the sound of a door opening onto a pasture, fog rolling over grass as the sun rises in the distance; it is the sound of renewal, and a sense of optimism. These are glistering melodic songs, an antidote to the chaos and abrasive atmosphere of touring, and a beautiful side-step from the music that Sydney Minsky Sargeant has been recording as Working Men’s Club for the past seven years. The 12 songs that mark Lunga were written over a period of years, beginning when Minsky Sargeant was a teenager growing up in Todmorden and following a chronology to the present day. It’s a deeply personal insight and Lunga feels like a haven, a world we can all step into.

The 1992 debut from Dazzling Killmen - remastered & repackaged.
Bass geometry.
Gnarled sheets of sound. Jazz cats in a knife fight.
Before Face of Collapse, this lit the fuse.
“ Helped usher in a myriad of movements, including math-rock, math-metal and prog-core , all the while defying classification. ” - CLRVYNT

Originally released in 1992, “Dig Out the Switch” captures Dazzling Killmen in their formative state: raw, volatile, and pushing hardcore to the brink of musical combustion. Engineered by Steve Albini (rest in power) and produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy (that’s not a typo), the album is equal parts pensive and panicked.
There’s more space here than on 1994’s genre-defining “Face of Collapse” - longer silences, stranger structures - but the DNA is unmistakable. Darin Gray ’s bass anchors the chaos with geometric slabs of melody. Blake Fleming ’s drumming rolls and twitches like an oncoming panic attack. And Nick Sakes ’ guitar is pure sheets-of-sound clanging - the perfect foil to the vocal cords he pushes past the pain threshold on tracks like “Serpentarium” and “Bottom Feeder.” The rhythm section’s jazz schooling is evident, but thanks to Sakes’ untrained attack, so is the post-punk impulse to destroy what you’ve just built.
Fully remastered and repackaged, this edition of “Dig Out the Switch” brings a landmark album back into focus - restoring the tension, grime, and urgency that influenced a generation of math rock, noise, and experimental hardcore acts to come.
Essential for fans of Craw, Shellac, Blind Idiot God, and the parts of your record collection you don’t show to strangers.
- AARON BURGESS / June 2025
“This keyed-up debut shows a band dynamically stretching themselves, battering tunes to the brink. They ceaselessly spit scat-jazz and hardcore sparks, with demented drumming backing artful guitar manoeuvres… ” - NME
“A collective personal hell set to tape. ” – Trouser Press

(Remastered Rainbow Inferno Vinyl Edition)
STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 12, 2025
If Deicide’s first album defined death metal, their second album supercharged it. Impossibly fast tempos, headspinning arrangements, just plain evil guitar tones… when somebody like bassist and vocalist Glen Benton labels the album “***kin’ over the top,” you know where you’re headed (if you said hell you’re getting warm) when you insert the needle into this Legion’s vinyl vein. As always with this band, holding the barely controlled chaos together is drummer Steve Asheim, whose double kick BPM approaches 4 digits amidst guitar squalls from the Hoffman brothers. The material on Legion has stood the test of time, too, with “Trifixion” and “Dead but Dreaming” enduring fan favorites. Indeed, Legion (which, along with their self-titled debut, is one of the best-selling death metal records ever) is reckoned by many to be Deicide’s best album; it’s certainly their most brutal. Remastered for the format and pressed in metallic “rainbow inferno” vinyl, complete with a highly flammable lyric insert.

STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 12, 2025
This is going to be the scariest spoken word record you’ve ever heard. We’re not joking…and neither is Vincent Price. The star of such horror classics as House of Wax, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, and Theatre of Blood (and, of course, narrator of Michael Jackson’s Thriller video) can barely hide his delight while he takes his audience through a graphic and occasionally grisly history lesson in witchcraft from the Bible through the Middle Ages, the Spanish Inquisition, and Nazi Germany. Then, accompanied by occasional eerie, abstract electronic music, Price’s sinister satisfaction only mounts as he provides instruction in the dark arts, with such tracks as “How to Make a Pact with the Devil” and “Curses, Spells, Charms.” It’s all in good fun, of course…or is it? The mysterious writer of the script, one Terry d’Oberoff, has only one other credit to his name: as the “mascot” of an early ‘70s band called…wait for it…Black Magic.

This 1969 double-LP release has long been coveted by collectors of the curious and macabre, and for its first-ever (by popular demand) CD reissue, we are giving it the Real Gone treatment, reproducing the gatefold jacket with a 4-panel CD wallet and including the booklet that accompanied some copies. It’s a combination history textbook and how-to manual in witchcraft, with a title page depicting a particularly unsettling spell called “The Hand of Glory” involving the severed, salted, and dried hand of a convicted felon. Happy Halloween.

LYN CHRISTOPHER: Lyn Christopher
(Remastered CD & Light Blue Vinyl Edition)
STREET DATE:
SEPTEMBER 12, 2025
Let’s start with this fact: this 1973 record is one of the most sought-after collector’s items of its era. Why? Well, first of all, Lyn Christopher’s self-titled release on the Paramount label is a really fine album, a beguiling blend of pop and R&B sounds featuring the artist’s winsome vocals backed by some of New York’s finest studio cats, like guitarist Hugh McCracken, Blood Sweat & Tears multi-instrumentalist Lou Marini Jr., and future Back Street Crawler keyboardist Mike Montgomery. And “Take Me with You,” the penultimate song on the album, has been sampled by Mobb Deep’s Havoc, LL Cool J, 50 Cent, The Game, and, memorably, by the Smut Peddlers on their 2001 underground classic “One by One.” But there is another very big reason why original copies of Lyn Christopher command a king’s ransom (and no, it’s not because it’s never been reissued in any format). If you know who Chaim Witz and Stanley Eisen are, then you probably already know the answer. That’s right…this album marks the first appearance on record of Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of KISS! They sing background vocals on two tracks, “Celebrate II” and “Weddin’”; and supposedly that’s Peter Criss doing handclaps. What’s more, this album introduced legendary engineer Eddie Kramer—who, though unbilled, was engineering the sessions—to Simmons and Stanley, who were still calling their band Wicked Lester. Kramer then produced the four-song demo that got KISS signed to Casablanca, and the rest, as they say, is history! We at Real Gone are thrilled to FINALLY be reissuing this fabled album on CD and light blue vinyl, remastered by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision and complete with liner notes by Bill Kopp that set the stage. A real slice of pop music history that you gotta hear!

HERB ELLIS & REMO PALMIER:
Windflower
(Black Vinyl Edition)
STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 12, 2025
Originally released on the Concord label, this masterful 1978 meeting of jazz guitar giants has quietly become one of the most collectible albums of its era. Herb Ellis and Remo Palmier (a.k.a Palmieri) were contemporaries in the red-hot NYC jazz scene of the ‘40s, but they arrived at this recording through very different routes. Ellis’ reputation steadily grew as he went from being a sideman in the Glen Gray and Jimmy Dorsey orchestras to being a mainstay in the Oscar Peterson Trio in the ‘50s, and later playing in a guitar trio with Barney Kessel and Charlie Byrd. Palmier, on the other hand, got his career off to a blazing start, playing with Coleman Hawkins before appearing on seminal bebop sides (e.g. “Groovin’ High”) with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. But then, health issues intervened, and Palmier spent the next three decades or so working a staff job at CBS for The Arthur Godfrey Show. Finally, after the show was canceled, Palmier reentered jazz circles but never really recorded much, which only makes Windflower that much more of a treasure. “Sublime” is the word that springs to our mind, but you can substitute your own superlative; backed by George Duvivier on bass and Ron Traxler on drums, Ellis and Palmier bring an organic sense of swing, beautifullyvoiced chords, and lyrical lead lines to such fare as “The Night Has a Thousand Eyes,” “Groove Merchant,” and even “Danny Boy.” Produced by Concord label founder Carl Jefferson, pressed on black vinyl.

DEAN GITTER: Ghost Ballads
STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 12, 2025

Every Halloween, we at Real Gone Music delight in exploring all cultural manifestations, ghostly and otherwise, of the holiday. And in doing so, we are following a tradition centuries old, if not as old as mankind itself. This 1957 album on the Riverside label takes you back to merry Olde England for a collection of 12 ballads concerning the supernatural, many of them taken from Francis James Childs’ legendary book The English and Scottish Popular Ballads, and lustily sung by folklorist and balladeer Dean Gitter. One interesting thing to note about these songs: unlike, say, Hollywood’s version of ghosts who “live” to scare the living, many of the poor souls in these songs have come back to soothe the grief of their loved ones. It makes for a very different “spin” from your typical Halloween record, and a most haunting listen. And you get to gaze at legendary New Yorker cartoonist Charles Addams’ amazing album cover art while you do! We are pressing this one in clear with orange pumpkin swirl vinyl limited to 900 copies, complete with the informative original liner notes on the back cover. A bittersweet Halloween treat.

Tired of “Monster Mash”? Through with calling “Ghostbusters”? If your Halloween playlist is begging for something different, look no further than the frightfully fun Music to Freak Your Friends and Break Your Lease. Don’t believe us? Take The Bride of Frankenstein’s word for it–she’s on the cover! Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records, in our relentless quest to leave no musical stone unturned, have given a new lease on life to one of the most unusual records of all time. Upon its initial release in 1974, this “Symphony for Tape Delay, IBM Instruction Manual, & Ohm Septet” was credited to “recognized raconteur, genius, composer, musicologist, conductor” Heins Hoffman-Richter, whom the original liner notes blithely inform us, “died from an ear lobe tumor.” It turns out that the late Hoffman-Richter was none other than best-selling poet and all-time cult music hero Rod McKuen…but you won’t find any cats named Sloopy here. Instead, Music to Freak Your Friends and Break Your Lease is Rod McKuen’s very own Metal Machine Music. Like Lou Reed’s later experiment in feedback and noise, Freak Your Friends features no songs or traditionally structured compositions…but it just might scare off those candy-hungry kiddies on your doorstep with its Moogtastic mayhem! Simply put, this wild journey through the electronic underground has to be
that

the collectible original release and also includes an insert with liner notes from The Second Disc’s Joe Marchese. Music to Freak Your Friends and Break Your Lease will indeed act as potent pal and landlord repellent…limited to 500 copies!

“A REVOLUTION IN INDIE ROCK” -STEREOGUM
PRESSED ON “WHITE LIE” VINYL LIMITED EDITION OF 1,500 SADDLE CREEK AND INDIE EXCLUSIVE LP ON “SHARPIE YELLOW” VINYL

Trying Not to Have a Thought, arriving September 12th via Saddle Creek, isn’t just the rst Algernon Cadwallader album since 2011’s Parrot Flies . It’s also the rst with their original lineup—vocalist-bassist Peter Helmis, guitarists Joe Reinhart and Colin Mahony, and drummer Nick Tazza—since Algernon’s seminal 2008 debut, Some Kind of Cadwallader Shortly after that album was recorded—and long before it was heralded as a lodestar for the 2010s “emo revival”—Tazza and Mahony departed the band. Despite their looming in uence on the aforementioned “revival,” Algernon broke up in 2012 following the release of Parrot Flies and remained stubbornly deceased until their endishly anticipated resurrection in 2022.
Algernon Cadwallader are certainly cognizant of their cult legacy, a status that's transformed their fanbase into a unique convergence of graying punk lifers and fresh-faced teens who rst discovered “midwest emo” on TikTok. Given the long gap between albums and the critical acclaim they’ve garnered in that time, it would’ve been understandable for the guys to feel pressured to live up to their own standards while making this new record. Thankfully, the opposite was the case.

Trying Not to Have a Thought di ers most from previous Algernon records in its lyrical content. On their rst two albums, Helmis avoided heart-on-sleeve emo tropes by penning prose that was ambiguous and out there. For this batch of songs, Helmis felt compelled to be a little more thematically explicit, pointedly exploring the tension between the necessity of self-improvement and the urgency of the external. Speci cally, the doom-scrollable apocalypse that is modern American life. Album opener “Hawk” is a brisk, poignant meditation on grief that weighs the ache of loss against the bittersweet memories that keep the deceased ever present. “Revelation 420” and “Million Dollars” are scorching political diatribes that excoriate capitalism’s failures and venerate protest. “Attn MOVE” is a historical reminder of the MOVE 9, a group of Black radical activists whose Philadelphia homes were notoriously bombed by police in 1985—a block of houses that's located right between Reinhart’s current house and Headroom Studios.
With Trying Not to Have a Thought, Algernon Cadwallader juggle intrinsic musical connection and shrewd lyrical intention with remarkable poise. The album’s title perfectly captures that dual approach: the e ort to resist being mentally bogged down by the bottomless list of daily atrocities, and the band’s decision to let their unspoken connection guide this rejuvenated take on their classic sound. “This is just what comes out of us when these four people get in a room,” Helmis says. And this record is exactly that: an Algernon Cadwallader album that's leisurely, intensely, tremendously their own.

Corb Lund hair in my eyes like a highland steer

Hair In My Eyes Like A Highland Steer, a fan favorite in Corb’s catalog with features from legends Ian Tyson and Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, will finally get a wide release on vinyl for the first time since its release in 2005. The title track, based on Corb’s childhood memories of his grandpa’s “cows with no eyes,” starts off the album with his band’s signature, punchy swing. Saturated with family history, true stories, and nods to the old west, this record is filled with quintessential Corb Lund tracks. “This album has been our most commercially successful, and really fanned the flames of our torrid and short lived affair with country radio and CMT. We cut it in Tennessee and it’s full of fiddles and country piano. ‘Truck Got Stuck’ was a big moment for us and is still a live favourite. Hair In My Eyes introduced both Brady Valgardson on the drums and Grant Siemens playing guitar, both of whom have been long time band members. We still play a ton of these songs live as the core of our shows…I don’t focus as much on love songs as a lot of writers do,” says Lund, “And I find it more interesting to write tunes about whatever my brain is involved with at any given time. Could be ranch stuff or card games or home renos or starting campfires or books about 1970s politics. It all finds its way into the cauldron. I was spending a lot of time playing cards for semi-serious money during this period so there’s some of that going on.”
This limited edition release is part of the Corb Lund - Dark Horses Club. New West Records will be releasing unreleased records and material from Corb Lund throughout 2025 and 2026.

: Modeselektor
Modeselektor – aka Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary –is one of the most original acts to emerge from Berlin's techno underground. After more than three decades of astonishing work – spanning cult labels, critically acclaimed albums and EPs, and era-defining releases as part of Moderat – they remain at the top of their game, as hungry as ever for the freshest electronic music from around the world. In 2025, the same year DJ-Kicks and !K7 Records celebrate their 30th and 40th anniversaries respectively, the duo are finally set to deliver their edition for the vaunted mix series
Modeselektor's passion and drive are writ large across DJKicks Contributing to the long-running series has always been on their bucket list Then, finally, this year, the stars aligned, and they set to work on their edition of the compilation.
Taking the non-linear approach has always been the Modeselektor way. No two tracks on DJ-Kicks sound alike, meaning the magic often happens in the liminal spaces between tunes The rhythmically compelling release came together over a matter of days It features 22 tracks, including two original Modeselektor cuts, plus field recordings from tour listen out for the lively discussion toward the end, recorded in a studio in Kingston, Jamaica True to form, the mix stitches together an impressive mishmash of styles Across the mix, Szary's selections lean more beatless and ethereal, while Bronsert is the dancefloor specialist.
The beauty is in the lining in listening to the mix again and again, and uncovering fresh details and earworms each time. Despite its modern bent, it has an everlasting quality, much like Modeselektor and DJ-Kicks themselves Both are totems of Berlin's rich, shape-shifting electronic music culture Decades later, they remain as relevant as ever "Don't skip the tracks," laughed Szary, when asked how fans should approach the mix "And just enjoy it "

Rian Treanor & Cara Tolmie Body Lapse
PLANET MU RECORDS STREET DATE: 12th SEPTEMBER 2025

BLACK VINYL LP: ZIQ479
This exciting new collaboration between Cara Tolmie and Rian Treanor is a highly kinetic and playful endeavour. Body-centric vocal explorations merge with intricate rhythmic systems forming a deliciously disorientating, hypersurreal space of semantic modulations, concrete poetry, cut-up beats and mimicked samples.
Their sound is singular and tactile: dissociative dance music that reassembles contorting vocal lines and knotting biomechanics in an explorative network of unstable forms. It’s a blur of bodily fragility and ecstatic disruption, where swells of meaning rise and fall through clouds of synthetic buzz, fleeting breath, and streamof-consciousness imagery.
The duo first performed together when Counterflows Festival paired them for a new commission at the historic Arches venue in 2023. Glasgow-born, Stockholm-based vocalist and performance artist Cara Tolmie brought her hypnotic vocal technique, Internal Singing — an intimate practice using breath, movement, and touch that explores the subtle binds between voice and body in an unsettling, engrossing sonic space. Treanor’s richly innovative work provided a compounding counterpart: radical, rave-infused structures that bent and contorted around Tolmie’s incantation.
Growing out of a series of charged, improvisational performances, Body Lapse was recorded between Stockholm and Rotherham in 2024. Echoes of their live energy run throughout — a voice shaking through the body, responding to touch and physical modulation, translating performance into something tactile and immediate. Body Lapse marks their debut release together, it conjures a sound of unsettling beauty and frictional intensity — a playful, physical mesh of computer music, voice, and speculative storytelling. In this gnawing, dreamlike space, breath and body become sites of both connection and disruption, sparking thrilling encounters with the unexpected, the playful, and the decisively weird.

Following her 2020 “mini album” ‘This Is Not A Democracy’, Kester was lauded for her stirring blend of chamber pop and psychedelia for her debut album ‘Honeycomb Shades’ (2023) which was named Dutch album of the year by newspapers NRC and de Volkskrant and nominated for the best Dutch album by 3voor12.

Now, Kester returns with second album ‘Dark Sky Reserve’ via Memphis Industries; a soundtrack to all the thoughts that bubble to the surface once the silence sinks in. ‘Dark Sky Reserve’ is Kester’s most artistically focused record to date, combining a rich, layered humanity in the music with minimalist lyricism. With the help of producer Ali Chant and a variety of other collaborators including Adrian Utley (Portishead) and Rozi Plain, Kester balances scenes of idyllic bliss from the “magical and strange” ‘Talybont-on-Usk’ with existential questions on ‘Departure’. Written in the nights of recording sessions in Bristol, ‘Dark Sky Reserve’ is the result of Kester writing from a place of newfound clarity: “I could see myself for who I am.”
Available in indie exclusive Opaque Blue Vinyl, standard black and CD, ‘Dark Sky Reserve’ sees Robin continue to grow and evolve as an artist, reaching blissful new heights in the process of doing so.

Lonelin ess F o r Sale EP

SELLING POINTS:
-Features vocals from Mark Gardener from Ride
-Neil Conti (Prefab Sprout, Mick Jagger, David Bowie) on drums
-limited edition pressing on white vinyl
It all started, as all great bands should, over the love of both music and football! When Mark Gard ener first teamed up wi th members of long time Italian Shoegaze band Votiva Lux, the conversation moved quickly from music to football, with Mark (Oxford United) and Giulio (Bologna FC) debating the outcome if an unlikely European derby happened between their teams.
Until that day comes, music will remain their primar y connection, with a collaboration that began in 2022 with Mark singing on two Votiva Lux tracks and continues to this day with Nord Electric. Mark’s vocals were, as expected, stellar on the Votiva Lux tracks, but it became clear that this collaboration needed to go to the next level, and thus Nord Electric was born.
The first step involved bringing in Neil Conti, Prefab Sprout’s drummer, and a man who has held down the beat with everyone from David Bowie to Mick Jagger and more. The first song they recorded, Loneliness for Sale, has a chorus that will be stuck in your head for the rest of the year, and with that song they knew they were creating something special. 3 more tracks quickly followed, collected here as Nord Electric’s debut 4 song EP. Pressed on white vinyl, this limited EP is just the beginning for your new favorite band!

Artist: Whitney K
Title: Bubble
Release date: 2025-09-12
Label: Fire Records
Territory: World Excluding Canada
Track List A1
Whitney K – Bubble
Whitney K returns with ‘Bubble’, his first album for Fire Records and followup to 2022’s acclaimed ‘Hard To Be A God’. Whitney K continue his migrant mind games, summoning up a series of intriguing characters, littered with everyday foibles and fantasies.
Along the way, he pens a journal of possibilities as he travels further into transient America, touching on everything from bar room chatter, rumour and distortion to misinformation, daydreams, misunderstanding and selfrealisation; with anecdotes lifted from the paperback in his back pocket and his half-forgotten past.
‘Bubble’ is a 13-part cerebral mystery that unravels on songs that bring to mind the gruff sentimentality of the late Kris Kristoferson, Lennon’s ‘Jealous Guy’, Eels at their most troubled and the American Gothic sketches of David Ackles; the perfect soundtrack for a Raymond Carver book club.
“Nomadic Canadian channelling magical realism, country rock and Lou Reed.”
Uncut
Recorded in Montreal, it’s self-produced by band members Josh Boguski and Michael Halls at their home studio. This stripped back release is Whitney K’s most raw yet refined work to date an honest, sonically paradoxical collection that finds fresh possibilities in the familiar shapes of rock, pop, and folk with the same unfiltered energy and poetic gravity we have come to expect from this modern-day troubadour whose descriptive storytelling is filled with sketchy characters and rudimentary comment.
“Remarkably sophisticated musical blend… Inventing exciting new directions for roots music all along the way.”

Black Lips – Season of the Peach
“Simply masters in their field” NME
Black Lips return with a brand-new studio album, Season Of The Peach, a 40minute rock and roll odyssey, tripping through DIY genres where garage rock meets new wave pop, and disgruntled country shakes hands with epic western soundtracks. The 14-track album captures the energy and spirit of early Black Lips while simultaneously applying new approaches to songwriting.
The album is a musical merry-go-round, a journey featuring road-weary tales from the underbelly of a lights-out America. It’s bookended by “The Illusion” parts one and two: a barroom quest for hope, fear, and hate, thwarted at each turn by a sense of resignation, “you reach for the sky / but it’s an illusion.” Elsewhere, “Wild One” plays out like a Morricone romp through another day in Hell. A mantra for the hungover, a skin-crawling lament in praise of the wild at heart.
“Tippy Tongue” sees Black Lips take on 60s girl group soul, like The ShangriLas and Ronettes infiltrated by Jayne/Wayne County, paying homage to Buddha Records. Meanwhile, “Kassandra” has a guitar sound scrubbed clean for a Sunday, chiming its way through ever-spiralling salvos like The Chocolate Watchband with Zappa on vocals. “Zulu Saints” is an upbeat country honk, a good-time brush with bravado, peppered with Cole on an incredulous radio phone-in show, looking for black-eyed peas and winning big on the slot machines.
For the recording sessions they holed up in the bucolic surroundings of drummer Oakley’s new Sound At Manor studio in the Catskills (the first album recorded there since Oakley built the studio in 2020). In this idyllic setting, the band disconnected from city life and committed their music to analogue tape, part of their quest to embrace spontaneity and capture the energy of a live Black Lips show on record.

Sun Ra
HiddenFire
Strut Records proudly presents the official reissue of Hidden Fire Volumes 1 & 2, the final album released by Sun Ra on his El Saturn label in 1988.
Captured live over three nights at the Knitting Factory in New York City, these performances mark the closing chapter of a 33-year odyssey of radical, independent music-making Originally issued in tiny quantities with minimal packaging and cryptic artwork often featuring hand-written labels or Ra’s own handmade designs Hidden Fire was among the most elusive entries in Sun Ra’s vast discography.
Musically, these recordings stand apart from Ra’s other '80s compositions Here, Hidden Fire plunges into darker, more dissonant territory Ra performs exclusively on the Yamaha DX7 synthesiser, pushing its digital sound palette into alien dimensions. The Arkestra lineup is uniquely configured, featuring a rare and heavy string section with three violins, including the legendary Billy Bang, and the singular space vocalist Art Jenkins, whose eerie textures and vocalisations had not been heard so prominently since the early 1960s Choreographers Workshop sessions. The music is raw, unsettled, and often overwhelming
“Retrospect / This World Is Not My Home” opens with a palindromic riff that evokes Ellington before unraveling into a stark sermon from Ra, warning of death’s dominion over Earth-bound minds “Hidden Fire Improvisation” is a furious explosion of tone science, with Marshall Allen, Billy Bang, and John Gilmore delivering fire-breathing solos over relentless drumming and Ra’s cascading synth clusters “Hidden Fire Blues” offers a warped, electrified version of Ra’s familiar blues feature, led by Bruce Edwards on guitar and Rollo Radford on electric bass, transformed through the haze of DX7 textures. “My Brothers The Wind And Sun #9” evokes the experimental weight of The Heliocentric Worlds with its crashing percussion, pulsing synth-vocal duets, and stringdriven chaos that seems to spiral into oblivion Even the quieter moments—such as “Hidden Fire II,” a duet between Ra and Art Jenkins feel thick with unease and shadowy beauty These performances represent a Sun Ra less concerned with cosmic joy or outer-space swing, and more focused on conjuring portals to the unknown.
Remastered from original sources and presented with archival photos, new liner notes by Paul Griffiths, and restored artwork inspired by the original Saturn editions, this reissue offers a definitive window into the last creative surge of one of music’s most visionary figures across two Vinyl LP’s

INGREDIENTS IN A RECIPE FOR SOUL
BACK ON VINYL FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MORE THAN 50 YEARS
PRODUCED WITH THE FULL COOPERATION OF THE RAY CHARLES FOUNDATION
A TOP-TEN STEW OF JAZZ, SOUL, AND POP STANDARDS
INCLUDES THE HITS “BUSTED” AND “THAT LUCKY OLD SUN”

Ingredients In A Recipe For Soul proved that Ray Charles didn’t so much ignore genres, but, by the ’60s, had become a genre unto himself. An academic might want to separate this stack of songs into neat little buckets—country, jazz, standards, blues, pop—but those are just the ingredients. Ray Charles sings whatever he likes and whatever he sings comes out as a Ray Charles song, with a flavor all its own.
Two hit singles, “Busted” and “That Lucky Old Sun,” made Ingredients In A Recipe For Soul an instant Top Ten when it was released in 1963. Bootlegged across Europe for decades, this is the first and only legitimate reissue of this essential album on vinyl (and its first appearance on CD since the 1990s), now fully restored and remastered with the full cooperation of the Ray Charles Foundation.

Psychedelic rock group TEKE::TEKE are intimately familiar with duality, of splitting reality between past and present, complex melodies and hushed interludes, intense action and lingering response. After building their sound through careful assembly of countless splinters of Japanese folk, psychedelia, Brazilian surf rock, and other far-flung touchstones, the Montreal-based seven-piece indulged in and learned from stretching out in free-floating experimentation on the road. With the release of their sophomore album, Hagata in June 2023, TEKE::TEKE moved fully in the space between, embracing the power of mythic pairings and identities lived at once. Matching muscly intensity with moments of cloudy meditation—like a world-class high jumper finding bliss at the apex of their leap—the group frame expressive compositions with regal flute, rich horns, ecstatic guitar, and a thumping rhythm section.
Revisting Hagata with the release of Hagata Delux (digital only) and it’s companion LP, simply titled Delux, TEKE::TEKE has expanded their overall vision, including brand new song “Meimu” along with remixes and reiterpretations of Hagata tracks from the likes of SUUNS and Holy Fuck, as well as adding on and a collection of Hagata-era tunes available together on vinyl for the first time!

AT HIS ‘64 BEST!
On The Bandstand was a top 10 charter in ‘64 for the honky-tonker, one of two concurrent top-selling albums he had that summer! The nascent Buckaroos magic is here in an early configuration featuring long-time Owens sideman Don Rich, turning in a solid selection of originals and tastefully-chosen covers. Pressed at RTI, on black vinyl!
Based around numbers he was performing in his live shows, On the Bandstand features a mix of self-penned songs and then-current country favorites. Besides Buck, the spotlight shines on individual band members throughout the album. Speaking of the band, they were mere months away from being named The Buckaroos, courtesy of Merle Haggard who served briefly as their bass player before moving on to his own solo career. The sole hit on the original version of the album was “Kickin’ Our Hearts Around,” a song written especially for Buck by Capitol Records label mate Wanda Jackson.

ARTIST: LITTER, THE TITLE: DISTORTIONS

THE LITTER IN MONO!
Minneapolis was their home turf. But in the decades that followed, appreciation for Distortions swelled to tidal wave proportions among fans of amped-up, ramped-up, balls-to-the-wall rock 'n' roll. Headlined by two red-hot, stone-cold killers, "Action Woman" and "Soul Searchin'"--both penned by producer Warren Kendrick--Distortions is arguably the greatest private-press garage band album of the era.
The Litter formed in 1966 as a merger between two popular Twin Cities combos, the Victors and the Tabs. They quickly established a reputation as the wildest, loudest band on the scene. Bill Strandlof was responsible for the incendiary, feedback-laced guitar work on "Action Woman"--a local hit for the band when released as a single in January 1967--but by the summer he'd been replaced by another fast-fingered guitar slinger, Zippy Caplan. Caplan's fiery leads helped ignite the remainder of Distortions, including smoking interpretations of the Who's "Substitute," the Small Faces' "Whatcha Gonna Do About It," an intense reading of "Codine," and a comprehensive reconstruction-destruction of "I'm A Man."
Pure, unfiltered '60s garage rock excitement!

Death has always been an unwelcome but integral component of inspiration for Mike Newman. The music he makes as summerbruise—which he started as a solo project in 2015 and which has since blossomed and bloomed into a fully-fledged band of close friends—has been both haunted and propelled by it since it all began, notably by two separate and significant occurrences of it. The first was the death of his dad in 2016. The second was the death of his close friend Kyle some eight months later, just after the release of summerbruise’s first release, the seven-track bummer vacation. Both of those losses triggered a fascination with death that has seeped into summerbruise’s songs, and which finds itself rearing its morbid head again on Infinity Guise, the band’s first actual, proper, real-life, full-length debut album.
“This was so much more of a team effort,” continues Newman. “So much of this album was stuff I had nothing to do with—it’s definitely the first record that was completely written by more than one person. On The View Never Changes I wrote the lyrics, bass, drum and guitar parts—everything. With this one, I wrote the lyrics and a couple of guitar parts, but less than 20% of this album is me. Which is very exciting.”
This album, then, is what Newman calls “Summerbruise 2.0”, where he’s harnessed an almost Power Rangers-esque, well, power to bring this next phase of the band into existence.
The result is a set of songs—recorded at producer Nick Starrantino’s Dead End Studios in Long Island—that play tug-of-war between Newman’s own quirky vulnerability and the steady guiding hand of his musical co-conspirators. Opener “Making It Worse” combines neurotic self-awareness and emotional openness— as well as a good deal of self-flagellating humor—while “What Do You Mean “Guise”?” confronts the idea of mortality alongside a wholehearted dose of anxiety about the fear of dying.
“I didn’t expect this to go anywhere,” he admits. “I’ve just always thought being in a band would be the coolest fucking thing ever. And I tried and failed a few times throughout my life to write music, and just eventually decided I didn’t have the music writing gene, and that was fine because I would just have to be good at something else. So I graduated college and was going to be a teacher for the rest of my life, and then I got dumped. I was really bummed out and I tried to write a stand-up routine about something I was feeling. I was drunk and the next morning when I went back to re-read it, it wasn’t funny at all. It was just depressing. But then I turned that into the first summerbruise song. I was 25 or so and like, ‘Wait, if I can write a song, I can finally fucking start a band!’”
As this album proves, that was the start of something very special indeed.

• Summerbruise features members of Saturdays at Your Place and Arcadia Grey

"Elk-Lake Serenade was originally released in 2004, so I’m a few months late putting out this 20th Anniversary edition In early 2002, I had just completed a few tours supporting my Skyscraper National Park record, culminating with Toronto’s Convocation Hall performance which was released as a live record that year. I settled back at home and began writing and recording what would slowly become my 4th full-length studio album. I chipped away at my new songs, mostly on my own, but a few talented folks helped out along the way - including my pals Howie Beck, the wonderful Burke Carroll and East Coast legend Julie Doiron (of Eric’s Trip) singing on the song “Roll Down That Wave”.” -- Hayden Desser, 2025

THANK THE LORD… IT’S THE PINK STONES THANK THE LORD… IT’S THE PINK STONES
THE PINK STONES

“We believe in some pretty strict rules,” says Pink Stones frontman Hunter Pinkston. “We also believe in breaking them. This band was built on reimagining tradition, on honoring the old ways while pushing them someplace new.” On their intoxicating new album, Thank the Lord… it’s The Pink Stones, Pinkston and his bandmates do precisely that, offering up a joyful, adventurous take on ’60s twang that blurs the lines between cosmic country, folk, bluegrass, soul, and psychedelic rock. Recorded once again with co-producer/engineer Henry Barbe (Drive-By Truckers, Deerhunter) in the band’s hometown of Athens, GA, the collection showcases a more deliberate, mature side of The Pink Stones’ sound, one that reflects all the personal and sonic growth that’s defined the last few years for the hard touring five-piece. The songs on Thank the Lord… are humble and timeless, full of wry, sardonic wit and rich, evocative storytelling, and the performances are easygoing and amiable, with an effortlessly natural feel that belies the masterful craftsmanship behind them. The result is a record that wears its influences proudly on its sleeve, even as it subverts expectation, a work of poignant longing and playful humor that tips its cap to everyone from Merle Haggard and Earl Scruggs to Don Williams and The Byrds as it looks both forwards and backwards all at once.

WHITEY MORGAN & THE 78’s MAKE IT TO THE TOP SHELF OF BLOODSHOT’S BAR.
NPR may not be the first place you’d think to go for snarling, blood-on-the-tele country music, but they sure got it right when faced with Whitey Morgan & The 78’s: “Staying close to the sound and subject matter of classic outlaw artists like Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard and David Allan Coe, Morgan is poised to lead this hard-worn brand of country to the next generation.”
More than a decade after we let this record loose, millions of Yellowstone viewers heard “Bad News” as delivered by Whitey Morgan & The 78’s from this here album. We suspect more than a few of those folks will be compelled to drink straight from the source and hear more of what they love. It’s also not a stretch to say the rest of country has caught up with what Whitey Morgan was puttin’ down in 2010. Anyone listening to Chris Stapleton and Jamey Johnson will find a familiar friend right here.
As for us, we like to think of their Bloodshot debut as the birth of Altlaw Country and 16 years later it’s still one of the best damn records we’ve got.

THE YAYHOOS CATALOG IS FINALLY COMING ON VINYL . . . WHERE IT’S ALWAYS BELONGED.
The Yayhoos are the bar-band you wish stumbled into your local dive every Friday night: A supergroup of four overqualified roots-rock lifers with nothing to prove except that loud guitars, cold beer, and three chords still beat whatever the kids are doing now.
Guitared and produced by Yayhoo Eric “Roscoe” Ambel—Joan Jett’s original Blackheart and Steve Earle’s right-hand man— Fear Not The Obvious (2001), is pure, ragged rock: recorded live to 8-track in a North Carolina barn, every track is a sweaty reminder that rock should be fun first and perfect never. Even their cover of ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” sounds like it’s always belonged on a sticky bar jukebox.
Other Yayhoos include Dan Baird, former Georgia Satellites frontman, Terry Anderson, drummer and ace songwriter, and Keith Christopher, a bassist who’s powered everyone from Shaver to Kenny Wayne Shepherd and likely closed your favorite roadhouse at least twice.
No surprise that we’d pick this shambolic glory for our Barrel Select series, highlighting and enhancing the top shelf of the Bloodshot catalog. And that other Yayhoos album? That’s coming, too. Stay tuned . . .

Soul Jazz Records Presents
LATIN FIRE!
Cumbia–Salsa–Afro-Funk: Tropical Dance Music from Discos Fuentes, Colombia 1956-83
19th September 2025
Soul Jazz Records delve into the vast vaults of Discos Fuentes, one of the oldest and largest record companies in Latin America, known as ‘the Motown of Colombia’. Discos Fuentes played a major role in spreading Afro-Latin sounds both to Colombia and around the world and this album explores that legacy.
Latin Fire! features legendary Colombian artists such as Fruko, The Latin Brothers, Michi Sarmiento, Afrosound, Pedro Laza, Wganda Kenya and more and showcases the wide-ranging variety of styles that Discos Fuentes made unique to their sound. The album features music from the golden era of Fuentes; from late 50s and 1960s Cumbia through to the emergence of heavyweight and hardcore salsa and Afro-funk in the 1970s and up to the early 1980s.
Discos Fuentes pioneered the sound of ‘Tropical’ music – Afro-Colombian dance music that originated in the north coast of Colombia bringing it to a new worldwide audience. This album shows how Colombian music was also influenced by New York barrio-style hard Latin and salsa and Caribbean styles such as soka and zouk to create a truly unique dance music sound.

Cruise Control are a Portland based band playing heartfelt and hooky tunes influenced as much by the twang of country as by 60s/70s rock and power pop. Starting off as a trio, Izzy Dupuis, Lee Butterfield and Penny Olives wrote and recorded their first set of songs at home before picking up Tim Daylight to complete the lineup, honing their songwriting and live set along the way. On their new LP Time Is An Angel, the band maintains a timeless feel while also expanding upon their sound and arrangements Following the album release, Cruise Control will be hitting the highway with a long stretch of regional and national touring in the coming year, bringing their music to dive bars, DIY venues and everywhere in between.
On Time Is An Angel, Cruise Control has presented us an album like a gifted bouquet of vibrant blooms, showing their hand at vintage tones and sincere songs From a-side to b, it plays like the perfect mixtape for an ambling summer drive Country twang merges with power pop jangle, fuzzy leads and honey sweet harmonies, sounding like the sight of blue sky after weeks of rain. Over the course of the album, you’ll feel the warm breeze of fiddles and haunting sweet pedal steel gather depth and hue to pick n’ strum ballads playing like Ole Opry faves, while washes of mellotron and endless guitar solos add watercolor washes to lightly psychedelic dreamfields, all before reaching the summit of the title track’s heartbreaking (and heart mending) crystalline crescendo of feeling and remembrance - Corby Plumb, Totally Different Head zine

DYLAN EARL - “LEVEL-HEADED EVEN SMILE” OUT SEPTEMBER 19TH, 2025
Born in Louisiana and naturalized by the Natural State, Dylan Earl seeks to understand himself by understanding others. His new album, ‘Level-Headed Even Smile’ (2025), charts territory into his formative years discovering Arkansas, the people who showed him the ropes and back roads; and who he hopes to become. Offering poignant nostalgia, history, and a refreshingly progressive approach to country and western music, his newest effort is rife with wry wit, irreverence, and an endearing desire to colour outside the lines.
Earl is a welcome, original voice in the scene, finding favour in mainstream and alternative spaces alike as a loveable, alt-country hippie. Charming and direct, he’s easy to root for, and has spent many hours behind the wheel, driving to play for you. Sharing stages with other fan favourites like Esther Rose, labelmate Nick Shoulders, Judy Blank, Emily Nenni, Teddy & The Roughriders, Rattlesnake Milk and The Deslondes across the USA and the EU/UK, Earl has honed his performance and craft for nearly a decade.
Describing Earl’s catalogue as “an exploration of identity” is fitting, but it’s certainly deepened by the subtleties and clever turns of phrase across the 10 track run-time. Earl is a welcome, original voice in the scene, finding favour in mainstream and alternative spaces alike as a loveable, alt-country hippie. Travelling counter-culture and across vast expanses, not unlike the inimitable White River in Arkansas, Earl carves a path distinctly his own.

Forgetting is Violent is the most powerful release to date from Los Angeles saxophonist and composer Patrick Shiroishi (The Armed, Wild Up), with timely suites that meditate on racism and addiction. The music developed in part through extensive solo touring opening for Emma Ruth Rundle, in which Shiroishi brought effects pedals to the forefront. For the first time on a solo LP, Shiroishi has brought in collaborators: a who’s who of heavy music, including Aaron Turner (SUMAC), Gemma Thompson (Savages), and Mat Ball (BIG|BRAVE). With liner notes by Pulitzer Prizewinning author Hua Hsu, Forgetting is Violent is Shiroishi’s latest masterwork. We recommend snapping this one up while you can, because we expect copies will fly.

SLOW COOKER

It seemed like a good time to build some community. God knows I needed some. So I started building. But now my band and I wanted to invite you to join us, so we made you “Slow Cooker”—- a humble invitation to gather ‘round some songs and be present just like the friends who made it. Maybe stick around for a minute and get to know the place. Most of Slow Cooker was recorded live after hours, in a circle, all together in the magical upstairs room of our favorite music club. We shined up what needed shining, and left the edges where they pleased us. We made it on purpose, and together. Our friendship and connection to one another as well as where that energy joined the music was the most important and deliberate compass point we came back to over and over when making this record. That’s the stuff that weaves the songs together and inhabits the stories. Where we’re from is important too. The album cover shows us in the room where the songs were recorded, and where we’ve performed our three-year running series the album is named after. It’s where we began, and it’s where all our friends, fellow musicians and neighbors gather to have some food and drink and enjoy one another. We hope these songs lead to more of that. Maybe even with you?

Heavenly –
Operation Heavenly Skep
Wax Records

LP SKEPWAX031LP 2025-09-19 5055869550680
For most members of the band it’s the best album. But, tragically, the release of Operation Heavenly in 1996 was overshadowed by the sudden death of drummer Mathew Fletcher. The promotional tour was cancelled, the surviving members of the band went into emotional hibernation and no-one could bring themselves to celebrate these vibrant, upbeat songs.
So, this release by Skep Wax Records, nearly thirty years on, is more like an album launch than a re-issue. Time has healed most wounds, and the songs on Operation Heavenly feel like they can finally emerge onto the stage, with Mathew’s spirit very much alive: his effervescent witty drumming sounding as fresh now as it did then. These tracks are gleeful, melodic, sophisticated and knowing. The tough riot grrrl edge that Heavenly had developed a year before with seminal singles P.U.N.K. Girl and Atta Girl, has been blended with a deliberate quantity of Britpop styling.
Operation Heavenly was the band’s first release on a label other than Sarah Records. Matt Haynes and Clare Wadd had brought that exceptional label to a deliberate and dramatic end. The liaison with US punk label K Records continued. But in the UK, Heavenly needed to find a new home - and Wiija Records were welcoming hosts, ushering the band into a brasher, less cloistered world: the production on this album is brighter than before, the artwork is colourful and upbeat. With tracks as catchy and as complete as Fat Lenny, Trophy Girlfriend and Space Manatee there was an expectation that Heavenly might finally emerge from the indiepop shadows and trouble the charts. And who knows if this might have happened. Mathew was lost before the album was released, and the band had no choice but to bring things to an end.

CD LAUNCH380CD 2025-09-19 5056321673831
In the world of Pharaoh Overlord, little is ever as it seems. This band is less comprised of tricksters or mischief makers than fearless obsessives whose musical instincts take twisted and wild pathways. Now, fresh from forays into Italo-disco and synth-pop, they have thrown another still more mighty statement of intent into the universe. Louhi is a thunderous and majestic epic of joyful repetition and earth shaking power. A two-track minimalist-rock monolith forged from guitars, synths and hurdy-gurdy, inspired by the band’s eternal touchstone influence Outside The Dream Syndicate by Tony Conrad and Faust, and constructed around a single riff and melodic idea, it builds and evolves to fearsome pinnacles of elemental intensity.
Vocalist and longtime collaborator Aaron Turner (SUMAC, Isis, Old Man Gloom) and Tyneside maverick Richard Dawson were equally keen to get on board, the former taking a spontaneous and improvisatory approach to his vocal parts, and the latter largely playing a part consisting of one guitar chord. Yet whatever routes Pharaoh Overlord take to their destination, a common theme is the consciousness-warping singularity of the riff and the mantra, and the temporal disorientation this can provoke mirrors the broader designs of this record, which takes traditional folk elements and transports them in the band’s singular time machine.
April Magazine –
Sunday Music For A n Overpass
Tough
Love

LP TLV179LP 2025-09-19 5055869551564
Tough Love brings to vinyl for the first time April Magazine's Sunday Music For An Overpass, a nine track collection originally issued on cassette in vanishingly small number by Paisley Shirt in 2021. The kind of mythical recording you might have once needed to know the band to own. Alas, no longer..
Can the universe have two centres? Because if it's not Gothenburg it's San Francisco... It's impossible for me to think about what's going on in that particular part of the west coast right now without immediately being drawn to April Magazine, a comparatively loosely assembled three (sometimes four) piece centred around artist/musician Peter Hurley, who seem to simultaneously operate at both the heart and the margins of the current Bay Area underground. On the one hand they share members with many other bands, their guitarist/singer runs a gallery that functions as some kind of focal point/social space, and Cindy even have a song named after them. On the other hand, their music is resolutely lo-fi and invariably couched in a mysterious haze, the live footage available online seems to suggest that they sound slightly different each time they play, and there are reports they have dozens of songs (possibly albums?) that have not and may never be released, hidden inside their own private universe. On its initial release, Sunday Music For An Overpass was an early attempt to drag the group a little closer into the light, yet inevitably made them feel as endearingly enigmatic as ever. Typically, this vinyl reissue some four years later only goes part way in clearing that alluring fog
April Magazine channel the greats - Spacemen 3, The Pastels, early B&S, Mary Chain, Rainy Day/Opal/Mazzy et al - but submerge their obvious melodic capabilities within seemingly infinite spray can hiss, as if the songs are being pulled backwards through some vortex to the past. Half of these tracks are instrumentals, and it's in those moments that the band are perhaps at their most expressive, suggesting a very inviting melancholy that can't quite be figured out. Though the LP remasters the original recordings and is a little cleaner sounding as a result, no secret is being given away. The appeal is that the more you hear from them, the less you really know, and all the better for it. Maybe, then, it's that April Magazine are here to show there is no centre to the universe, that instead it's always just off to the side..
Nubiyan Twist –
NT Soundsystem (Dubplate Inferno)
Firebelly Records

LP FBRVA002LP 2025-09-19 5055869551496
Nubiyan Twist present NT Soundsystem - Dubplate Inferno, a new 9 track album reimagining tracks from their critically acclaimed album ‘Find Your Flame’, transforming them into bass-heavy, dub-infused dancefloor killers. Produced by band leader Tom Excell alongside singer Aziza Jaye, the remixes channel the raw energy of the band’s live performances, blending their signature fusion of jazz, afrobeat, soul, and reggae with the gritty, immersive sound of traditional UK soundsystem culture.
The album features some extra guests on vocals, legendary MC Horseman appears on a drum & bass version of ‘Battle Isn’t Over’ whilst newcomer SkillFul Kxng from Kingston, Jamaica, breathes some Dancehall fire on ‘Woman’, adding to contributions from the original record including Seun Kuti, Mamani Keita & NEONE the Wonderer.
This project is a celebration of collective musical innovation, paying homage to the UK’s rich soundsystem heritage while pushing boundaries with their genre-defying style.
Nubiyan Twist have built up a name as one of the forerunners of the UK Jazz scene, fusing together global grooves, soul and jazz; intertwined with electronic elements, horn-led melodies and spontaneous improvisation.
The influence of soundsystem culture has been ever present in their music, from dub sessions the band used to attend in Leeds to jungle raves of East Anglia in the 2000’s. Band Leader Tom Excell has a history of DJing and producing dance music, including with reggae side-project Chief Rockas, working with reggae giants such as Super Cat, Luciano & Turbulence.
Nubiyan Twist’s lead singer Aziza Jaye was born of Jamaican heritage and has grown up around soundsystem culture, boasting an incredibly versatile vocal style and large catalog of work alongside a plethora of producers, including recent work with Mungo’s Hi-Fi.
"A beautiful blend of groovy dub with uplifting horns and soulful vocals" The Guardian "A free-flowing assemblage of jazz, soul, hip hop and diasporic styles." Mojo

Will Yates has made music as Memotone since 2007. He operates in the tradition of what Robert Fripp has called 'a small, independent, mobile, and intelligent unit.' If you book him, he will come. When he arrives, he will have everything he needs to make his complex, engaging music: a clarinet, a guitar, synths, samplers and pedals, quickly unpacked in the corner of a club, gallery or village hall. Starting small, he will build layer upon layer of melody, accompanying himself and cutting across himself, creating a music that avoids cliche and moves beyond easy description. His recordings have followed the same trajectory. Moving quickly, he has released fifteen or so albums across various labels. Taken together, these recordings are the sound of a skilled, inventive composer pushing at the edges of what he wants to listen to himself. It is possible to hear a variety of influences in his music: folk and jazz forms, the textural inventiveness of British DIY electronica and Chicago post-rock and the blurred sci-fi brass of Jon Hassell are all discernible. But mostly, Will's work seems to stem from a constant drift between long hours in his home studio, and time spent outside in the woods and hills around his home in Wales.
