Richard Thompson’s new album, 13 Rivers, is the artist’s first self-produced record in over a decade. 13 Rivers is a minimal and spacious recording which, according to Thompson, is a projection of current events in his life. “This has been an intense year for myself and my family, getting older doesn’t mean that life gets easier!

There are surprises around every bend. I think this reflects in the immediacy of the stories, and the passion in the songs. Sometimes I am speaking directly about events, at other times songs are an imaginative spin on what life throws at you. The music is just a mirror to life, but we try to polish that mirror as brightly as possible.”

The sessions were tracked at Boulevard Recording in Los Angeles. 13 Rivers features Richard’s regular accompanists, Michael Jerome and Taras Prodaniuk, as well as Thompson’s long tenured guitar tech, Bobby Eichorn, on second guitar. Each track on the album was recorded in analog, with minimal overdubbing. “Boulevard is a really funky looking studio,” says Richard, “but it sounds great. It used to be called The Producer’s Workshop, and was owned by Liberace, whose ghost is reportedly still hanging around. Steely Dan records were done there, and The Wall by Pink Floyd was mixed there. Clay Blair, the engineer, is a Beatles nut, and has every piece of Beatles gear he can lay his hands on - so if things sound a bit like Abbey Road, so be it!”

13 Rivers spans thirteen tracks. It is an album as much about growth as it is about reflection. Says Thompson, “I don’t know how the creative process works - I suppose it is some kind of bizarre parallel existence to my own life. I often look at a finished song and wonder what the hell is going on inside me. We sequenced the weird stuff at the front of the record, and the tracks to grind your soul into submission at the back.”

ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO THE CROSSING RELEASE DATE: SEPTEMBER 14, 2018 On his scorching, cinematic new concept album The Crossing, Alejandro Escovedo tells the story of two young immigrants – Salvo from Italy, and Diego from Mexico – working in a Texas restaurant in pursuit of the American dream. Mirroring Escovedo’s own experience as the child of Mexican immigrants, and drawing inspiration from his relationship with Italian co-writer Antonio Gramentieri, their journey navigates cultural identity, ancestral weight, minority rights and racism as they realize they have arrived in a different America – one that’s not as open and free as they believed it would be.

The first single,“Sonica USA,” featuring Wayne Kramer of MC5 on guitar, is a scorcher that serves as an ode to the 70s punk scene where Escovedo found solace as a Mexican-American growing up in Austin, and the solidarity he found in his brother’s own pioneering punk band the Zeros.

Says Escovedo: “Early on I’d play in San Marcos, San Antonio and get all these Chicano kids in denim vests and Iron Maiden patches. I remember thinking they were into us, not necessarily for the music, but for the fact that we were on stage. They loved that we were doing what we were doing.”

Escovedo crossed borders of his own for The Crossing sessions, recording outside the US for the first time ever at a farmhouse in Villafranca, Northern Italy with the help of co-producer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Gomez, Iron & Wine). Italian all-instrumental group Don Antonio – helmed by co-writer Antonio Gramentiere – bring the record’s narrative to life with their sweeping arrangements, while cameos from Kramer and The Stooges’ James Williamson serve as reminders that Escovedo’s punk ethos burns bright (both bands name are checked in the lyrics as well).

Elsewhere on the record, alt-country pioneer Joe Ely features on both the title track and his self-penned “Silver City”, while Peter Perrett and John Perry from UK legends The Only Ones reunite for their first recording in almost 40 years on “Waiting For Me.”

The Goon Sax are James Harrison, Louis Forster and Riley Jones from Brisbane, Australia. In Hastings-on-Hudson, a small town just north of New York City, the band’s founding members – D’Agustino, co-songwriter/lead guitarist Andrew Wolfson, and bassist Zach Slater – were three teenagers without direction. Long summers were spent learning how to write and perform songs, and how to communicate complex emotions, which at such a young age brought the friends closer and closer together. They didn’t expect the band to last through high school, so when it did, they had to choose: separate and head off to different colleges or stay together and see where the band could go. They chose both, and with the addition of Quinn McGovern on drums, Active Bird Community’s lineup was finalized.

In the years since, as its members made their way through young adulthood and graduated college, the band has self-released three albums: the scrappy, lo-fi Magnum Opus, the tender garage-rock assemblage I’ve Been Going Swimming (2015), and their most recent release, the anthemic Stick Around (2017). They’ve cultivated a dynamic live show that’s fortified by a collective chemistry only possible from years of friendship. Active Bird Community is finely-tuned and musically tight – their earnestness and kinetic enthusiasm is wholly contagious, and still evident despite their advanced age of…24. And now, they’ve returned with Amends – their Barsuk Records debut and perhaps their most deeply felt album to date.

Amanda Fish began as a singer songwriter in late 2012, refining her original material as a solo act for 2 years before she formed her band in early 2014, a Roots Rock and Soul project featuring Amanda’s signature ‘from-the-gut’ vocals locked into a sturdy groove.

In 2015, she released her first LP, “Down In The Dirt”, on VizzTone Label Group, for which she was awarded the 2016 “Sean Costello Rising Star” Blues Blast Music Award. Amanda and her band set Beale Street on fire in the 2017 International Blues Challenge Semi Finals, playing new material slated for her next release.

BONE .8 TAIL .9 Following July’s ‘Staccato Signals’, the much-acclaimed third album under his own name, this autumn composer and producer Ben Chatwin will release its companion piece – ‘Drone Signals’, available via Village Green Recordings on 14th September.

Unlike ‘Staccato Signals’, where Ben started with a blank slate and built the music up layer by layer finishing with the string quartet, this time the process began with everything on hand. The task became to dismantle the tracks – stripping them apart to see what was left, letting certain sounds or instruments become the focus, and then rebuilding the arrangements around them. This allowed elements to breathe, yet also to become more static. The less chaotic and more ambient nature of these pieces suggested a related album of versions, a conceptual sibling, an inverted composite of shared musical DNA – ‘Drone Signals’.

Feeding string parts through an array of modular synthesisers, utilising modern sampling and granular synthesis, Ben remoulded what was once players performing in a room into new microscopic electronic textures – using the final element of the previous album, recording the strings, as a starting point

to feed into his machines, developing a central conceptual tool of his previous album – giving up control – even further. The result is a fractured and dissembled interpretation of ‘Staccato Signals’ as performed by modular synthesisers.

In this way, ‘Drone Signals’ might best be understood as the aftermath of ‘Staccato Signals’, a postapocalyptic sonic landscape, the still following the storm. It retains much that made ‘Staccato Signals’ such a rewarding album – its mournful beauty, the tense, ambiguous relationship between electronic and acoustic elements, and a delicate if not strained balance between elegance and intensity. This time, however, the palette is broader, more static – more concerned with monolithic structures than with sharp edges.

The hectic, conflicted energy of ‘Hound Point’ and ‘Knots’ from the former melt and decay into the slow, gradual burns of ‘Nordsjœn’ and ‘Unravel’, while the strings on ‘Black Castle’, prominent and stirring on ‘Staccato’, reappear only in strangled, muted gasps on album-opener ‘Burning Witches’ - occasionally flickering through the smouldering distortion. Where ‘Staccato’ is urgent, dynamic and chaotic, ‘Drone’ is expansive, dispersing its harmonic identity over much wider spaces, requiring more of a vertical listening experience than its predecessor.

Following ‘The Sleeper Awakes’ (2015), ‘Heat & Entropy’ (2016) and ‘Staccato Signals’ (2018), ‘Drone Signals’ is Ben’s fourth album under his own name. He has performed live across the globe with the likes of William Basinski, Hauschka, Tim Hecker, Oneohtrix Point Never and Loscil.

s the spirit of the beehive front man Zack Schwartz puts it, Hypnic Jerks sounds like “the state between wakefulness and sleep.” The Philly quintet’s third fulllength is named after the involuntary muscle spasms that can happen right as someone begins dozing off ... a perfect feeling to compare the album’s drowsyyet-restless character to. Unlike the spiraling momentum of the band’s sophomore LP, pleasure suck, the spirit of the beehive takes a more grounded approach here, though the ground it’s standing on is equally otherworldly. Dreamy is a fitting adjective, but the ten tracks on Hypnic Jerks never fully slip into the peaceful character of dream-pop.

ypnic Jerks has the quality of an indescribable dream fading from memory as you slowly begin to regain consciousness. Its warped guitar tones, transcendental synths and smattering of eerie audio samples conjure this purgatorial space between reverie and reality. Come Write Me down by The Copper Family of Rottingdean finally brings the legendary 1950s and early '1960s Copper Family recordings to CD for the first time. These rare performances present the glorious 'Southern harmony', southern English that is, that The Coppers brought to prominence during the early part of the folk revival.

The classic duet harmonies of cousins Bob and Ron Copper are featured along with previously unreleased recordings of the quartet including both their fathers, the brothers John and Jim Copper.

The influence The Coppers and these recordings have had is inestimable. All this goes to make this release, arguably, the most important traditional music releases this century. Come Write Me Down has been carefully remastered with astonishing results, sounding better than anyone had originally hoped for.

Included are two booklets: a 60-page booklet with extensive biographies, historical notes and a 36-page book with full lyrics. Bob Copper sadly passed away shortly after receiving national recognition by way of his MBE and this CD release is possibly the finest archival tribute to his legacy and The Copper Family.

The Copper Family continue to perform and record songs, to this day keeping their Folk tradition alive and well.

The Oldham Tinkers formed in the mid 1960’s following a chance meeting in a Lancashire pub. Brothers Larry and Gerry Kearns and John Howarth formed the band and would go onto record tracks for various Topic Record compilations before being asked to record their first of five albums for Topic.

‘OLDHAM’S BURNING SANDS’ (12TS206) was recorded in 1971 at Tin Pan Alley Studios London. Produced by A. L. Lloyd, four more albums followed. ‘BEST O’ T’ BUNCH’ (12TS237) 1974, ‘FOR OLD TIME’S SAKE’ (12TS276) 1975, ‘SIT THEE DOWN’ (12TS323) 1977 and ‘THAT LANCASHIRE BAND’ (12TS399) 1979.

This introduction to The Oldham Tinkers release is a snap shot of the wonderful collection of colourful material recorded by a lost treasure within the Topic Records stable.

Originally the sole release on pre-On-U Sound label 4D Rhythms, a young Adrian Sherwood remixed and re-recorded a tape of older reggae rhythms, overdubbing a ton of new percussion and FX, flipping the tape over, and generally abusing the reel-to-reel in any way possible. The result is something utterly deranged and unique in the already pretty out-there annals of dub. It was also rumoured to be the planned soundtrack of a Don Letts-directed film about ‘alien dreads from beyond the stars’!

Solo album from Allo Darlin’ drummer Mikey Collins, who combines his love of solid grooves and joyous harmonies to create a fun and sonically varied record. Mikey draws on influences as far flung as Dexy's, Bruce Springsteen, Night Works & Father John Misty. The last few years were a conveyor belt of change as he; got married, had a child, bought a house, moved from London to the Kent coast and opened Big Jelly Studios. The record journeys through these changes but has its roots firmly grounded in his new seaside habitat. This is evident in songs such as as “Falling”, which is about proposing to his wife to “Pinata”, a song about handing over your heart, wrapping it in a piñata and giving someone the bat (in a humorous way). "Side by Side" is a reflection on having spent a lot of time with a group of people and that. "West Coast" is another uptempo disco-vibe, reflecting on time spent with long term tour buddies The Wave Pictures in California. In "Home Bird", Mikey tried to pay homage to to the grooves of older RnB tunes with a simple arrangement, Rolling Stones-esque riffs and thoughts about the dichotomy of missing home, but loving being on the road. Collins deftly blends a solid rhythm section with disco beats and old school R&B grooves, layering the bass lines, guitars, synths and harmonies to build up each track sonically. The result is a shimmering and glittering record that bursts with joy and wonder.

This debut album is the deviant fuzz-folk manglings and discopunk-rock-blues of Somerset multi-instrumentalist Billy Shinbone. We are the band called JOBS, and sometimes that feels like a big responsibility. JOBS believes that this band is our job, and it is the band’s job to provide an experience that makes you forget your job, and hopefully gets you to look at the way things are with an eye towards how things could be.

The original members of JOBS - drummer Max Jaffe, bassist Rob Lundberg, and guitarist David Scanlon - started the project (under the name “killer BOB”) in a tiny closet in Manhattan when they were music students (yes, this is music made by music students, but don’t let that scare you away), and 10 years later, they continue to devise new ways of maintaining their creative vitality.

The music on their forthcoming record, ​“Log On For The Free Chance To Log On For Free”​, is the result of changes to their environment and lineup. To prepare for this record, JOBS rented a small two-bedroom bungalow in Santa Fe for a week. There is a vastness and an openness to the surroundings there that is nowhere to be found in New York, and the band took full advantage of that, feeling the space and freedom to run with their craziest ideas. Long unstructured days of writing and rehearsing were broken up by spontaneous hikes in the Galisteo Basin. Food was prepared together. Energy flowed with ease. A record of new material was essentially complete by the end of the week.

After finishing the recordings in a communal house studio in Woodstock (The Isokon), JOBS had one final crucial step, which was to formally bring longtime friend and occasional member Jessica Pavone into the band. She brings her own highly-developed musical personality to the table, as well as years of immeasurable experience as a luminary of the New York avant-garde. Her viola playing and one of her compositions (“Held Up Fairly”) make its debut with JOBS on this record.

On the title of the record, ​“Log On For The Free Chance To Log On For Free”​, it can easily be heard as coming from the voice of a corporation which, for many, is the keeper of their job. “Logging in... is a ploy to acquire information. ‘Log on for the free chance to log on for free’ is a catch-22. It is a corporation exploiting someone and, in return, giving them what they already had,” says Lundberg.

Jaffe adds, “there are corporations that we have socially agreed to collaborate with. Our information and the content that we create is monetized and in exchange we are given a community that we already had.”

The energy that is bottled and distilled in this record is multitudinous, with moments of tensile contemplation leading to teary-eyed euphoria, irreverent humor morphing into inchoate rage, all-out metallic assaults paired with spacious group meditations, and all guided by a spirit of joyful experimentalism. Despite the musical risk-taking found on the record, the concept of “groove” is essential to JOBS’ music. Scanlon says “I do not have a clear definition for ‘groove’; however, a collectively agreed upon pulse seems crucial to its existence”. One can hear the influence of the communal living and open spaces that forged these songs in the many collective and risky agreements JOBS makes throughout this record.

The album was recorded live in a single room at Robert Lang Studios (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) in Washington by Kurt Ballou (Converge), who later mixed the album at his own studio GodCity.

The album flows with the continued momentum from their acclaimed collaborative release with with legendary Japanese artist Keiji Haino (Fushitsusha, Painkiller) earlier this year American Dollar Bill - Keep Facing Sideways, You’re Too Hideous To Look At Face On, incorporating more freeform abstraction into their raw, bombastic, and jagged sound. The intense exploration of tension and chaos is mirrored in Turner’s striking visual art for the album, where strands of frayed ink and hints of color coalesce into a swamp-like form both elaborately disorienting and minutely structured in its packaging.

Ska Authentic RELEASE DATE: 9/21/18 The original Ska Authentic LP was released in 1964 and after the first pressing sold out it was not reissued, becoming one of the rarest albums in the catalog. In 1967, an English version of the album was released, but bore little resemblance to the original 1964 Jamaican release, sharing only two songs. The English version is distinguished by the orange box around “Authentic,” a redesigned back cover, and the red and white hanging mic label. This album was basically a Skatalites affair and became the version that was reissued for over thirty years. In the mid-1990s, a new version of the album was released, sharing tracks from both earlier issues as well as adding four new tracks. To further complicate matters, in 2000 a Ska Authentic Vol. 2 was released that included two songs from the very first album.

This new Studio One release marks the first time in fifty-three years that the original landmark album has become available again. Featuring top instrumentals like “Freedom Sounds” and vocals from the Gaylads, Lee Perry, the Maytals, and Jackie Opel, this release showcases the power of the Studio One ska recordings. It also gives a glimpse into the selections that drove the ska fans wild and fueled the dances.

Australia’s greatest cult band, The Necks, has a new piece to offer the world this summer, entitled “Body”. Different again to all previous Necks albums (20 in total), the band has chosen 10 words and phrases that summarize the four richly contrasting episodes of this hour-long, mesmerizing groove. They are as follows: Episodic, Driving, Dynamic, Layered, Celebratory, Soaring, Rocking out, Buoyant, Sustained, Perfectly paced.

The album uses, yet again, the combination of Chris Abrahams (piano, keyboards) Tony Buck (drums, percussion, and guitar very much to the fore on this one) and Lloyd Swanton (acoustic bass) with Tim Whitten (engineer), who has recorded and/or mixed the last twelve Necks albums. The Necks hold their own with the best of them when it comes to rhythmic complexity, but they have put much of that to one side for this album in the interests of conjuring their most relentlessly driving album since Hanging Gardens.

Strut present a brand new edition of Oneness of Juju’s Afro-jazz classic ‘African Rhythms’, originally released on Black Fire in 1975 and first reissued on Strut in 2002.

For bandleader James “Plunky” Branch, ‘African Rhythms’ marked a significant return to his home town of Richmond, Virginia after a politically charged five years based on the East and West coasts. His personal journey had taken him from activism at Columbia University to San Francisco where Zulu musician Ndikho Xaba used theatre to “resurrect” Afro-Americans with a new African identity. The first incarnation of Plunky’s band, Juju, drew attention to the struggle in South Africa under apartheid, layering heavy Afro rhythms under uncompromising avant garde jazz.

Back in Richmond, Plunky tapped into the mid-Atlantic preference for Southern R&B and gospel: “Juju had always been blues-based and it was a natural progression to add R&B and dance rhythms. It didn’t change our message.”

Produced by Jimmy Gray of Black Fire Records, the new sessions included the title track (“We wanted a song to dance to with a message – ‘you are dancing to African rhythms’”), the positive message of ‘Don’t Give Up’ and political commentary on ‘Liberation Dues’.

Originally just a regional hit on the East coast and in Washington DC specifically, the album gradually spread, influencing the nascent DC go-go scene. The UK revived the album during the rare groove era of the late ‘80s and the title track has since become a soul-jazz favourite worldwide.

Remastered from the original sessions and featuring rare photos and extensive liner notes, this new repress also features Part 1 and Part 2 of the original 45 version of ‘African Rhythms’ and the previously unheard ‘Afrobeat’, recently unearthed from the original tapes.
