TAMI NEILSON Kingmaker

July 15, 2022

From being cradled as a baby in the arms of Roy Orbison, to performing “Beyond the Stars” with Willie Nelson on her new album Kingmaker, you would think that Tami Neilson lived a musical fantasy life. In between these monumental occurrences, the Neilson Family were having to busk in the streets to put food on the table, roaring down the highway in an exploding RV to open for Johnny Cash, which she did, at 18, in her pajamas. Recorded at Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios, "Kingmaker" exposes the patriarchal structures of the industry, society, and the family. She sings of the underestimation of women, of their resilience. From singing with Kitty Wells at 10, to slipping demo tapes in the laundry bags of stars. From humble beginnings to success on her own terms. Tami Neilson is a game changer, a cage shaker, a Kingmaker. “Royal Yellow” LP OUT9177lp

Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight

This Issue: Even Newman & Lori Stanton from Outside Music

How did you personally get started in the music industry? Evan: I was in finance, hated every second of it, quit and moved out west to Vancouver where I got a job at a predatory lender, then it was robbed, in which I was held hostage, and with a gun to my head I said “if I ever get out of this, I’m not going to work shit jobs anymore”. I moved back to Toronto and started my journey in the music biz. Lori: I started in HMV Canada’s management training program straight out of college. There were no guns involved. When and where did the label begin? Lori: Outside Music (the label) was founded in Toronto, Canada in 2001 as an offshoot of indie distribution company, Outside Music. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? Evan: I believe Lloyd, the founder of the company, wanted something simple that indicated a company that existed Outside of the norms of the industry How has the label changed since it started? Evan: The label was initially an outlet for the warehouse staff who were also in bands, which included The Sadies. The label was always the little sibling to the distribution company up until 2007 when industry trends started to shift. The label has grown significantly over the past 15 years, and has become the major focus of the company. We’ve expanded beyond the singer songwriter genre and have expanded to include a sub label in Next Door Records Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. Evan: Of course being an independent label, we’re all doing various things. I do a lot of the big picture stuff, Lori is very much on the day-to-day details and steering the ship, Peggy Hogan is focused on marketing but has expanded her role into A&R while Emma handles a lot of the manufacturing and public funding. Cathy runs the finances and is a co-owner and Margaret is our D2C contact and assists in the marketing campaigns. Lori: Women who like to get things done. +Evan, who I suppose also likes to get things done. What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? Evan: Album sustainability. With the absence of touring, sustaining the visibility on albums past release date has been challenging. We focus on content creation whether it be in the form of recordings or videos.

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? Lori: This is an evil, evil question! My current favorite is Abigail Lapell’s new album “Stolen Time” but with a new Tami Neilson record due out in July, I might be swayed! If I hop into the wayback machine, our early releases from The Sadies would all make the list. Evan: It’s Matthew Barber’s “Ghost Notes” which was one of the first releases for Outside Music. He had been on Warner Music for 2 records and he absolutely hated the major label experience. I felt this record was the first one he made for himself and it showed remarkable confidence from an artist who was almost beaten down by the machine of the music business. What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release? Evan: I worked with the White Stripes and we had them play every province and territory in Canada, at their last stop, in Newfoundland, they played one note but were able to say they played every place. We ended up releasing it as a record/DVD What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? Lori: I worked in distribution forever before moving over to the label, so I’ve heard (and possibly made) every argument both for and against color variants more times than I care to count. From a label perspective, we leave it to our artists to decide what feels right to them. Our planned releases for 2022/2023 all have a standard version and an indie exclusive variant. More often than not, our artists choose to have them both be colored vinyl. Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? Lori: We never stopped making CDs so we welcome the uptick in demand. No cassettes. Managing vinyl manufacturing is tricky enough. How would you describe the average fan of the label? Lori: The best looking, least annoying, most discerning folks with the greatest taste. Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own? Lori: HELL NO. Evan: Absolutely not

Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? Evan: We are Canadian and we are subsidized by the Canadian government so every release of ours is by a Canadian artist. “Canadian” is not a genre but there’s a certain charm that exists within Canadian albums, hard to classify but you know it when you hear it.

How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label? Evan: They’re very important to us. We want our artists to be aligned on values and morals, and good people who believe in equality and measures that protect a just society. Our artists are our main resource, and we need to be aware of the toll that a career in the arts can take on one’s mental health.

Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about? Evan: Mostly online, and through other artists on the label, and artists who reach out to us unsolicited. One of those artists is Bells Larsen, the youngest artist we’ve worked with in some time, they have a classic late 90’s alt singer songwriter vibe but their youth gives their sound this quirkiness and earnestness that makes the songs so endearing Lori: I follow a lot of record stores and labels online so I guess that’s where a lot of my new finds come from. Shazam is my friend, too, though my Shazam history can get pretty embarrassing. I’d echo Evan in being inspired by Bells Larsen. That’s a record I can’t wait for people to hear. My most recent purchases have been the new Frightnrs LP (Daptone) and Dehd (Fat Possum).

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? Lori: I started in the 90’s, before the online world really existed. “Change” has been the one constant, but increasingly the changes seem to be for the better. We are slowly moving towards a healthier industry that is more inclusive for women, BIPOC and those who identify as LGBTQ2SIA+. Too slowly, still, but I think the momentum is there.

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? Evan: Timeless Songwriters. We don’t have singers, we have singer-songwriters How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? Evan: When we first started we wanted to be a small curated label with a few select releases a year that were all very special. We try and keep that mantra of working with artists we care for and respect, both as artists and as people. We just expanded our roster and look to continue to grow year after year Lori: I love when the roster grows and we bring new artists in. There’s an energy that comes with each one that just adds life to the label. This year, Abigail Lapell and Jenny Berkel joined us, and we have a pretty exciting new addition coming on board later this year – a name many will recognize.

If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? Evan: We started Next Door Records two years ago and it’s a more free-form label that doesn’t subscribe to one genre but aims to support marginalized artists as a primary focus Lori: I would start a punk label that Evan would not agree to distribute. The name stays private. Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: Lori: This question is almost as evil as the “favorite label release” one. Canada is home to some truly stellar independent record stores, from Red Cat in Vancouver, BC all the way to Fred’s in St. John’s, Newfoundland. At home, in Ottawa, I am a sucker for Vertigo Records. When ordering online, I buy from Toronto indie shop Pop Music. They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered? Evan: We put out good music from good people, and that the records remain timeless such that one could put a record on from 2011 and it would sound pretty good as that comet hurdles towards earth.

RUSSIAN CIRCLES GNOSIS

Across the span of their previous seven studio albums, Chicago-based instrumental trio Russian Circles

traversed a diverse topography of sounds, moods, and approaches with their limited armory of drums, bass, and guitar. It’s difficult to chart an evolution in their sound when their records have always felt like

well-curated playlists. It wasn’t uncommon to hear drone-heavy meditations, dazzling prog exercises,

knuckle-dragging riff-fests, haunting folk ballads, and tension-baiting noise rock all within the span of one album. Still, it’s difficult to ignore the progression from the pensive and intricate melodies of Enter (2006)

to the layered distorted dirges of Blood Year (2019). It’s been a gradual sonic shift owing to the band’s rigorous tour schedule and a predilection towards playing their more authoritative material on stage. But

with their latest album, Gnosis, Russian Circles eschew the varied terrain of their past work and bulldoze

a path through the most tumultuous and harrowing territory of their sound. As was the case for so many artists in the age of COVID, the obstacles of geography and isolation forced Russian Circles to reevalu-

ate their writing process. Rather than crafting s ongs out of fragmented ideas in the practice room, full

songs were written and recorded independently before being shared with other members, so that their

initial vision was retained. While these demos spanned the full breadth of the band’s varied styles, the

more cinematic compositions were ultimately excised in favor of the physically cathartic pieces. Gnosis

was engineered and mixed by Kurt Ballou. Drums and bass were tracked at Electrical Audio in Chicago

to maximize the natural room sounds of the rhythm section. Guitar and synth overdubs were conducted

at God City in Salem, MA to take advantage of Ballou’s vast inventory of amps and effects pedals. De-

spite the entirety of the album being written remotely, the songs were recorded with the full band playing

together to retain the live feel of the material. Owing to the climate of the times and a new writing method,

Russian Circles created their most fuming and focused work to date—an album that favors the exorcism

of two years’ worth of tension over the melancholy and restraint that often colored their past endeavors. HIGHLIGHTS:

FELA KUTI

Title:

ROFOROFO FIGHT

Streetdate: 8/19/22

OVERVIEW Fela Kuti (1938–1997) was a Nigerian musician, producer, arranger, political radical, outlaw and the originator of Afrobeat. A titanic musical and sociopolitical voice, Fela’s legacy spans decades and genres, touching on jazz, pop, funk, hip-hop, rock and beyond. “Roforofo Fight” is the 4th in the series of celebratory Fela 50th Anniversary reissues. Like its predecessors in the series, this version will be on color vinyl and the LP will be wrapped in a gold foil obi strip with a brief essay on the album and Fela’s global impact on music. Like Fela’s other early 70’s releases, he used each side of his LPs to create a deep groove that pulls the listener in and follows with metaphoric lyrics that call out and critique the corrupt hangover of colonialism. The lyrics of the title track illustrate Fela’s frustration at intolerant, violent human behavior by depicting a fight that breaks out in the streets in Lagos. The second song ‘Go Slow’ is a 17:22 minute groove of super funk featuring the deep rhythmic interplay that is a hallmark of Fela’s Afrobeat. Lyrically, the song uses traffic jams in Lagos as a metaphor to criticize the harmful social and environmental impact of urbanization. The 2nd LP of rarities includes 2 songs not previously available on vinyl, ‘Question Jam Answer’ and ‘Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am’, and 2 songs previously not available on vinyl nor digitally, ‘Shenshema’ and ‘Ariya’!!!

“THE UK’S GREATEST EXPONENTS OF QUIRKY, COMPELLING POP MUSIC.” THE GUARDIAN OVERVIEW Hot Chip are pleased to announce their eighth album Freakout/Release, due for release on August 19. Freakout/Release is another dizzying high in a multi-decade career that’s seen Hot Chip continuing to innovate and develop a rich, resonant songcraft. And while they continue to operate at peak form, the album also feels like a new chapter for the group—a collection of flesh-and-blood songs that finds the band reaching into the darkness to emerge as a true creative unit, their gazes fixed positively on the future ahead.

Freakout/Release was written and recorded in the band’s newly minted Relax & Enjoy studio in East London, a creative space that Al Doyle put together before and during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Coalescing in the Relax & Enjoy studio was essential in establishing the album’s lively, full-band sound and marks the first time Hot Chip began work on a new record all together as well as reuniting them in the same room for the first time following their touring behind 2019’s A Bath Full Of Ecstasy. Lyrically, Freakout/Release explores darker emotions than previous Hot Chip albums have, drawing from the personal and the political to chart the ways people survive even amidst immovable struggles. “We were living through a period where it was very easy to feel like people were losing control of their lives in different ways,” Goddard explains. “There’s a darkness that runs through a lot of those tracks.” Thankfully, Hot Chip aren’t alone while exploring emotionally uncertain territory. Canadian rapper Cadence Weapon features on “The Evil That Men Do”, British DJ and musician Lou Hayter lends her vocals to the slinky “Hard to Be Funky,” while legendary production duo Soulwax contribute additional magic to the raucous title track. Over the last 18 years, Hot Chip have established themselves among similar British luminaries like Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode — a true gap-bridging between the worlds of pop and dance music, with a catalogue of songs that move bodies and touch hearts with equal impact. The eleven songs on Freakout/Release are evidence that the band’s not even close to slowing down—even as it’s clear that the weight of the world has seeped into these tunes’ nooks and crannies.

HEART UNDER

Streetdate: 8/19/22

OVERVIEW ‘Heart Under,’ Just Mustard’s second album, asks you to forget what you know. At every turn, this remarkable record reconfigures and stretches the ideas and ambition of a rock band, and turns a year of lockdown and personal struggles into a breathtaking artistic statement. The music the five friends from Dundalk, Ireland make is strikingly untraditional. Though to look at them, it appears that the band are a five-piece with uniform make-up of a vocalist, two guitarists, a bassist and a drummer, not a single one of them utilizes their instrument in a confined or regular fashion. Guitarists David Noonan and Mete Kalyoncuoglu make their sixstrings shriek and wail, the sounds produced sounding like everything from whirring machinery to horror movie monsters. Behind them, drummer Shane Maguire uses the rim of his drums almost as much as the skins, providing a clattering, metallic backbeat. Most of the melodies on offer poke through from Rob Clarke’s inventive, nodding bass lines. Then there’s Katie on vocals; she’s the transfixing focal point of the band.

SELLING POINTS • The band’s unique sound transcends genre and their immersive and all encompassing live set appeals to fans across rock, dance and noise audiences

Lightning Bolt redefines what it means to be DIY. An utterly singular band in every way, unbridled creativity and energy propel them well past most categorical boundaries, least of which is the boundary between band and audience. Theirs is an immersive experience – a sound so huge it can swallow us all. Oblivion Hunter is a monster. Not a compilation, not concept album and more than the sum of its parts, the record is a peek into the band’s inner world on their home turf (the Hilarious Attic in Providence), collecting deep explorations into distortion, bass manipulation and its intersection with rhythm. A Limited release in 2012 sold out almost immediately. This first re-issue is a deluxe one coming with 4 different covers each matched with it’s own color vinyl. Re mastered by Josh Bonati, you can now immerse yourself in this pivotal Lightning Bolt album’s sonic oblivion and YOU are now the Oblivion Hunter. A cathartic listening experience, Oblivon Hunter finds blast-beats colliding with distorted vocals and all shapes and sizes of guitar noises, even some metallic riffage on the album closer and aptly named “World Wobbly Wide.” Throughout, the sound is amped-up and free with an ear on the railroad tracks to the big sounds of industry and clamor. Bass sounds jump out of the speaker cones that conjure up ears in alien propulsion systems, nights in faraway wind tunnels. Experience this pivotal album in Lightning Bolt’s catalog like never before. “After so many years, albums, and shows, Lightning Bolt have grown into one of the fiercest bands on the planet. But the looseness of Oblivion Hunter is a nice reminder that the core of their appeal isn’t so much that they’re pushing their sound into new places, but that they’re two guys who can’t hide how happy they are that they get to spend their lives making this kind of a racket.” - Pitchfork

LISTEN HERE Pelican’s debut album Australasia, originally released in late 2003 by Hydra Head Records, is a landmark record in the shifting tides of heavy music that took place at the turn of the millennium. 20 years since its release and with several sold out represses, Australasia is a proven essential for any listener exploring the bounds of rock music. Now issued as a deluxe double LP edition newly remastered for vinyl and complete with 3 never-before-released bonus songs, including a remix by James Plotkin and digital downloads of early Pelican live recordings. Artwork by ISIS/SUMAC/Hydra Head founder Aaron Turner. Following the release of the band’s auspicious self-titled EP, Australasia’s singular integration of melodic complexity and tremendous density redefined conceptions of what constituted “heavy.” Pelican’s unique manipulation of atmosphere and dynamics seamlessly alchemized their disparate influences beyond metal into music grand, mercurial and utterly sublime, worthy of the album’s namesake. Billowing clouds of strange serenity give way to tectonic riffs. Hypnotic rhythms chug at the precipice between doom and euphoria. Guitarists Trevor Shelley de Brauw and Laurent Schroeder-Lebec twirl soaring harmonies around the roaring thunder of bassist Bryan Herwig and drummer Larry Herwig. Throughout the album, the quartet move as one like a glacier, awesome and forever imbuing the landscape with their mark. Australasia stands as a pioneering work, unmatched in the level of unbridled beauty and devastation Pelican wields across the album. Their music has always thrived on patience—a virtue that makes aging gracefully feel like a seamless evolution.” - Pitchfork “...they lurk, they strike, the guitars crunch and wallow, the tracks are alternatively mercilessly swift or mournful and lugubrious. This is a complete change of mood to everything they’ve produced previously, for the better; here they sound alive and excited to be playing. It’s encouraging to note that everything hangs together very well, strung together by the imperious guitars.” - The Quietus Pelican also record for Southern Lord

Loudon Wainwright III’s latest album, Lifetime Achievement, has 15 new and original songs, and establishes his singular talent as our foremost six-string tragicomedian, not only undiminished, but hitting new heights. The album was co-produced with Stewart Lerman (Last Man on Earth, I’d Rather Lead a Band) and Dick Connette, Loudon’s partner on his Grammy-winning High Wide & Handsome. The orchestration varies from solo performance, to trio work with his longstanding musical cohorts, Chaim Tannenbaum and David Mansfield, to Nashville and Memphis-style little big bands, to a full-blown string arrangement by Rob Moose (Bon Iver, Amos Lee, Paul Simon). On his latest, Loudon lives up to a legacy the New York Times calls “rich, complicated and often surprisingly dark,” sounding as engaged and passionate as ever, richly displaying what NPR calls his “unmatched wit and wisdom.” Loudon puts his most recent achievement in the context of a lifetime of music making this way: “When I made my first record for Atlantic in 1969. I was always saying, ‘I want to make a voice and guitar record, and I want it to be a record, not only a recording, but a document that captures a moment.’ I was 21 and very serious, and I thought I’d be dead in four years. So I wanted to make something that would last. A testament. Now, fifty years later, I guess I still want to make a testament. I want to write a group of songs and get them down in the best possible way. And I like to think they might last a while.”

Inspired by Aleister Crowley’s Liber Liberi vel Lapidis Lazuli, and performed in a kind of trance state, this is music beyond thought, beyond beauty, beyond rationality. How Do I Get That Star is Zannie Owens’ debut record under their own name, as well as the first release with Kill Rock Stars. Previously, they performed as Potted Plant and they co-helmed the band Really Big Pinecone alongside Michael Buishas (0 Stars, .michael). This latest effort is self-produced, and features contributions from friends in New York, as well as zannie’s brother Sam, who plays bass and also mixed the record. Made over the course of four years, the record deals with feelings of pining for the unknown, the mystical, and the mundane. To paraphrase zannie, the record was produced mitotically from their mind. The resulting 11 songs (picked precisely because of the number’s magical, symmetrical qualities), are warm to the touch. To listen to How Do I Get That Star is to immerse oneself in a sound bath or look up at the stars on a summer night in the middle of nowhere.

Peel Dream Magazine is the musical vehicle for NYC's Joe Stevens, who launched the band in 2018 with the critically acclaimed album Modern Meta Physic, a mysterious, liminal tribute to the hazy end of ‘90s dream-pop that found its place on numerous "Best of 2018" lists. Now Peel Dream are back with Agitprop Alterna, an album that pays homage to the fuzzy, mod-ish pop of acts like My Bloody Valentine and early Stereolab, but it's also indebted to stateside bands like Yo La Tengo and Rocketship that were cut from a similar cloth. Agitprop Alterna finds Stevens channeling the collaborative spirit of the band's live incarnation in the studio, deepening the connection between the existential and the interpretive first explored on Modern Meta Physic. It is a rejection of manipulation in all its forms and a buzzsaw against complacency; it's a rare trick to agitate without being obvious, and perhaps that makes Agitprop Alterna the most Peel Dream Magazine-like statement yet.

With You Are the Flower, her first solo album, vocalist Daisy Press finds her voice in communion with the sainted and celebrated 12th century composer, Hildegard von Bingen. Daisy’s deeply personal approach, both irreverent and devotional, breathes new vibrant life into the world and work of the medieval visionary. Press first encountered Hildegard in a graduate school program at Oxford under the tutelage of the rockstar theologian nun Sister Benedicta Ward. Years later, in the midst of her career as a a go-to, indemand, classically-trained singer, spanning the diverse musical worlds of nightlife, classical new music, and experimental pop, searching for something she could call her own, Daisy rekindled her relationship with the 12th century mystic. Hildegard’s words and music spoke to her of a reclaimed power, of taking up space and demanding autonomy. Even more so, of the ecstasy of the body. Of the six chants on the You Are the Flower, three celebrate the martyred St. Ursula and three celebrate the Virgin Mary; they all speak about a devotion to the feminine. The first chant on the album, “Favus Distillans,” proclaims Ursula as longing to “embrace the Lamb of God with honey and milk under her tongue,” the imagery at once chaste and sensual. Fittingly, the album ends with “Ave Maria O Auctrix Vitae,” a full-on psychedelic ride (and epic homage to the Virgin Mary). Hildegard was 42 was when she started having visions and started writing. So when Daisy approached the same time in her life, Hildegard resonated. Thus inspired, Press has put her own stamp on Hildegard, birthing a new voice into the world, and inviting listeners to go on this adventure with her.

ELI WINTER self-titled

LP-TLR-140 Street Date: August 19, 2022 Format: Vinyl LP (with download) UPC: 634457095298

Chicago-based guitarist / composer Eli Winter’s new self-titled album finds him building on the promise of his recent records—like 2020’s Unbecoming and his 2021 collaboration with Cameron Knowler, Anticipation—with a gem of an album on which he leads an ad-hoc group that delicately balances a range of colors and moods. Winter is an accomplished player with impeccable technique and an unassuming virtuosity, capable of both mesmerizing intricacy and florid romanticism, but on Eli Winter he frequently plays a supporting role, creating ample room for his collaborators. The result is the sound of an artist escaping any lingering shadows of his primary influences and coming into his own; ironically, Winter does this by deemphasizing his role as traditional bandleader. Assisted by a murderer’s row of peers and contemporaries including Cameron Knowler, Yasmin Williams, David Grubbs, Ryley Walker, Tyler Damon, jaimie branch, and others, Eli Winter showcases a compositional depth and authoritative skill only hinted at on Winter’s rightfully acclaimed previous work. “For a Chisos Bluebonnet” begins the album on a perky and playful note, placing Winter in conversation with guitarist Knowler and pedal steel dynamo Sam Wagster, displaying in microcosm the dialectical, sympathetic collaborative language that is a hallmark of the album. The sound, largely captured by engineer Cooper Crain, is light and tight, with a panoramic clarity that renders the music lifesize. “Davening In Threes” continues, at first, the galloping, exuberant feel of its predecessor, as the harmonizing guitars of Wagster, Knowler, and Winter manage to extract beauty from a bluegrass breakdown tempo. Then, suddenly, Williams joins the trio for an interlude of harmonics before the suite concludes with a martial third act in 6/8 time. At this point it’s as if Winter begins to intuitively worry that all this prettiness is making us a tad too comfortable. The antidote arrives in the form of the dark-hued “No Fear,” which sounds like a prelude to a showdown; the slow-burn improvisation blends Wagster’s slingshots of whinnying pedal steel, Jordan Reyes’ rangy synthesizer scramble, and all manner of tube-sizzling, tremolo bar scree by Winter, Knowler, and Walker. The track provides no catharsis but rather hums with a sustained, agitated intensity. Side two begins with the pastoral post-rock of “Brain on Ice,” a soaring piece almost tender in its elegance, punctuated by the telepathic rapport of Damon’s percussion and Knowler’s nimbly ruminative acoustic guitar. “Dayenu” sounds at first as if it were composed on a commission or a dare to convey in sound a twinkle of the eye, before its fake-out ending pivots to a dramatic crescendo of branch’s proclamatory flugelhorn, Knowler’s rabbit-punch guitar interjections, and a shower of cymbals courtesy of Damon. The album saves the best for last, in the form of “Unbecoming,” which features Winter on 12-string guitar alongside Grubbs’ spectral harmonium and the harmonic, birdsong-evoking trills of Whitney Johnson’s viola, before gradually clearing a space for Liz Downing’s bowed banjo and a distant choir, courtesy of Downing and vocalist Giulia Chiappetta, whose lush harmonies provide the welcome and unexpected sound of heavenly human voices just as the song begins to fade, concluding the album with a tacit reminder, perhaps, that when God is busy or silent or absent, angels often pick up the slack.

Squalls were a band who came from the same rich Athens, GA scene as The B-52’s, Pylon, R.E.M., and Love Tractor, but played their own brand of quirky pop with their own unique sound. Equal parts Lovin’ Spoonful, Grateful Dead and Talking Heads, they got many a person up on the dance floor. From 1981 to 1989, Squalls rocked Athens and made several tours of the South, the Midwest, and East coast cities including several shows at New York City clubs CBGB, Danceteria, and Peppermint Lounge. They released 4 recordings and were included in the 1986 movie Athens, GA: Inside/Out. The band also played at the legendary Athens 40 Watt Club 64 times during their heyday.

SZUN WAVES

EARTH PATTERNS Street date: file under: territory:

The members of Szun Waves may not have been collectively in the same country, let alone room, for over two years, but that hasn’t prevented them from realising their third album, Earth Patterns.

The trio – comprised of producer Luke Abbott, saxophonist Jack Wyllie (Portico Quartet) and drummer Laurence Pike (Triosk/PVT/Liars) – recorded the album sessions together at the tail end of their 2019 European tour, locking themselves away in the studio for three days of improvisation. They emerged with hours of music, some inspired by their live shows, most born fresh in the studio itself, ready to be moulded into the group’s third album in five years. However, with Laurence marooned in Australia, and Luke and Jack grounded in different parts of the UK, it meant an unexpected reassessment of the band’s creative remit, and the enforced long gestation period almost inadvertently ended up creating the most fully-formed Szun Waves record to date. Where second album, New Hymn To Freedom, had its face tilted up to the heavens, Earth Patterns is a more grounded record, and in places, a more claustrophobic one: Wyllie’s saxophone squalls ripple in the background as Pike’s dense drums clatter, both shaped and guided by the atmospherics of Abbott’s synths. Moments of jazz harmony collide with cinematic soundscapes; long searching passages build into kaleidoscopic frenzies. “I think the record we’ve ended up with is an emotional outpouring,” Abbott says. “There’s a fluidity to it that feels like we tapped into something quite raw. The last record felt like drifting in space but I see this new record as a journey from the outer reaches of the universe down onto the earth, like a macrocosm to microcosm arc,” he explains.

• Szun Waves’ third album, following New Hymn To Freedom (2018) and At Sacred Walls (2016) • Recorded over three days in London in 2019, with additional input from James Holden and mixer David Pye • The album will be released on CD, black vinyl LP and limited edition indies only ‘brown smoke’ vinyl (900 copies for the world) • Vinyl editions include a spot varnished cover, printed inner sleeves and a download code • Earth Patterns will be preceded by three digital singles: ‘New Universe’, ‘Exploding Upwards’ and ‘In The Moon House’

• Dom Harwood’s video for lead track ‘New Universe’ is a brilliant distillation of what Szun Waves are - a marrying of the organic and the strange: spectral and widescreen • Harwood has worked on all aspects of the visual identity for this era of the band, including the beautiful artwork that embodies the rich, detailed approach of Earth Patterns as a whole • Previous album New Hymn To Freedom was incredibly well received, placing at number 4 in The Guardian’s Contemporary Albums of the Year list, and also featuring in end of year lists for The Quietus, Loud & Quiet and Get Into This • Support from XLR8R and Resident Advisor On New Hymn To Freedom: “Here the woozy, dream-like electronic meditations of Portico Quartet saxophonist Jack Wyllie and synth player Luke Abbott are brought to life by Laurence Pike’s fluttering, fizzing drums” The Guardian “Szun Waves jams come as swells, with a power that is hard to dismiss” Pitchfork

Leatherface – Minx Call Of The Void LP

VOID005LP

809236190512

Ltd edition RED Vinyl, DL card . Re-writing the rule book when it came to punk requisites, Leatherface combined passion, angst and power with undeniable songwriting and technical prowess. Led by wordsmith Frankie Stubbs their explosive hooks and thrashing guitars quickly became their trademark and made them one of the most exhilarating UK bands of the 90s. Arriving at the peak of their career, ‘Minx’ channelled Stubbs’ love for Joy Division and features their much loved fourth bassist, former Snuff band member Andy Crichton. A lost classic, it brought with it a more emotional direction to their sound which was released on the brink of the band’s hiatus. ★★★★ MOJO

"Offering a blend of vintage sounds including early psychedelic folk, country, and portable-radio-filtered '70s AM pop, N.Y.C.-based singer/songwriter Jackie Cohen makes a melancholic brand of indie pop." - All Music

Her lyrics and melodies are wonderful, careful, and winding, but they donʼt feel particularly fussed over. One gets the sense that Cohen just starts singing lines on a jog or a drive, filling the dishwasher or raging against a heavy-bag in kickboxercise class. You also get the sense that Cohenʼs done some hard, regular time in the therapistʼs armchair, just as busy judging herself as she is everyone else. Sheʼs developed a droll perspective on her own anxiety and depression, but it seems that the voice weʼre hearing is more self-assured than it was a short time ago; it carries a nimbleness and an endearing twang to it — in some moments, you can almost hear her grinning.

2 COLOR CAS

rummer, guitarist & singer-songwriter PHIL SEYMOUR came on the scene with a Top 20 hit with the Dwight Twilley Band called “I’m On Fire” in 1975. After 2 albums with his Tulsa, OK bandmate, SINCERELY (1976) and TWILLEY DON’T MIND (1977), Phil decided to go solo. Initially he struggles to find a foothold, but once the new wave hits America, the Phil Seymour Band storms Hollywood and becomes one of the hottest acts on the circuit. Signed to Neil Bogart’s Boardwalk label, by 1981 Phil is riding high at #8 on Billboard’s Hot 100 with the self-penned classic ‘Precious To Me’. In support of his album, Phil begins to tour the World. At long last these legendary Phil concert recordings have been made available as part of the PS Archive Series. Each disc features a different band, first Phil Seymour & the Feel and then the outfit he put together to support his debut album’s release. Special note - Phil’s version of the John Prine / Phil Spector song If You Don’t Want My Love is a rockin’ masterpiece, as are Baby Come Back (the Equals song), Dwight Twilley’s Looking For The Magic, Phil’s own Baby It’s You and Bobby Fuller’s Let Her Dance—both versions! Lucho Bermudez y su Orquesta The Coastal Invasion Cumbia, Porro, Gaita & Mapalé from Colombia’s Caribbean Coast (1946-1961) 'The Coastal Invasion’ highlights the golden age of big band cumbia and the maestro who is often seen as Colombia’s most influential composer, Lucho Bermudez. Bermudez was a key figure who modernised the tropical music of Colombia's Caribbean coast. At the beginning of the 20th century, this music was largely looked down on. Bermudez changed all that by injecting a modern, jazzy big band sound to the Afro-Colombian sounds from his native region.

Sweet Pill - Where the Heart Is Hle under: emo indie rock pop pop punk punk rock

Info: Philadelphia’s Sweet Pill write eruptive emo songs that embrace the edges of pop and hardcore. The kind of band whose members are fully immersed in their local scene—through a handful of notable side projects and the show-promoting Philly staple 4333 Collective—the quintet’s sound takes wide-spectrum inIuence from its environment. The result is an amalgam of complex song structures and Iourishes of technical acumen, wholly unconcerned with genre, yet evoking the speciHc styles of touchstones such as Paramore and Circa Survive. On their debut longplayer Where the Heart Is, Sweet Pill’s unbound, raucous energy presents through ten autobiographical tracks that hinge on singer Zayna Youssef’s elastic, enrapturing voice—at times belting and controlled, at others textural and guttural. Supporting Youssef are guitarists Jayce Williams and Sean McCall, bassist Ryan Cullen, and drummer Chris Kearney. Their blistering lead single “Blood” sees Youssef exploring a deteriorated friendship over Williams and McCall’s trudging riffs and tactful counterpoint, with Cullen and Kearney rumbling nimbly in the song’s foundations.

Track List: 1. Where the Heart Is 2. Blood 3. High Hopes 4. Dog Song 5. Sucker Punch 6. Sometimes 7. Diamond Eyes 8. Fate 9. Red String 10. Cut

Second single “High Hopes” counters with introspective, melodic punk that reshapes anxiety rather than succumb to it. But third single “Diamond Eyes” momentarily slows the pace, with McCall joining Youssef on vocals for a breakup lament laden with acoustic sentimentalism and an emotive Iurry from guest Iutist Jill Ryan. Such range is the central facet of Where the Heart Is, where Sweet Pill’s penchant for combining punkish tropes enlivened with the vibrance of math-rock and the aggression of post-hardcore sweetened with pop sensibility compound into something stylistically new yet still familiar.

Drum Major Instinct is an experimental music duo from Asheville, North Carolina. Jeff Arnal plays (mostly) percussion and Curt Cloninger plays (mostly) modular synthesizer. The Wire describes Jeff’s drumming as a “highly original concept" having "a balletic sense of time and imaginative deployment of colour;” and Byron Coley says Curt's modular synthesis “moves like blocks of radioactive adobe being shifted around by architects in space suits.” But, of course, nothing is ever that straightforward. The resultant music is about waves of energy, patterns within patterns (within patterns), sounds from the natural world, and running the voodoo down.

The Cat's Miaow - Songs '94-'98 World of EcHO LP

WOE006LP

5055869549301

Songs ’94-’98 is a smart selection of material from The Cat’s Miaow, an Australian indie-pop group that gifted their decade with some of its finest songs. Part of the burgeoning international pop underground of the nineties, The Cat’s Miaow’s legend has only built over subsequent decades, as more people discover this most quixotic and curious of groups: a recent appearance on A Colourful Storm’s compilation of Australian indie-pop, I Won’t Have To Think About You, is testament to their enduring influence. In part emulating the selection of tracks on the 1997 CD-only compilation, Songs For Girls To Sing, Songs ’94-’98 is also the group’s first ever full-length 12” vinyl collection. The Cat’s Miaow started out in 1992 as a home-recording duo, Bart Cummings (guitar, bass, vocals) and Andrew Withycombe (bass, guitar) taking time out from duties with Girl Of The World and The Ampersands (respectively), knocking out songs on Withycombe’s fourtrack. Soon joined by Kerrie Bolton (vocals) and Cam Smith (drums), the quartet spent the next five years quietly, slowly working away in the suburbs of Melbourne, recording gem after gem of independent pop.. 1. Hollow Inside 2. Light the Beacon 3. Not Like I Was Doing Anything 4. Note On The Table 5. You Know It's True 6. What Time Is It There? 7. I Can't Sleep Thinking You Hate Me 8. Smitten 9. Sophomore album ‘Cockerel’ which follows the brilliant 2019 debut album, ‘The Discredited Language of Angels’ .Gabi and her band summon up a volcanic concoction of sounds, from the poetic punk sensibilities of Ezra Furman and Patti Smith, the soaring alt pop of The Voidz and The Flaming Lips, to Motown inspired soul stompers, the record conjures up a range of atmospheres to occupy the listeners mind over many, many replays, as they fall deeper into the universe that is Cockerel. Regressive Left - On The Wrong Side Of History Bad Vibrations Records / Fuzz Club 12”

BADVIBES5V12B

5060467889490

180g black vinyl, standard sleeve, printed inner sleeve. In dark, troubling times, maybe the most instantly gratifying solace one can seek is a wittily barbed diagnosis of the situation. They are a staunchly political group, but far from your average po-faced by-numbers punk band. There is a gristly social commentary at the band’s core, but the songs themselves are characterised by a need to have fun, to find some kind of solace and escapism from the inevitable rapture. Recorded over an intense 5-day spell with in-demand producer Ross Orton (Arctic Monkeys, MIA, Amyl and The Sniffers) in Sheffield, Regressive Left’s debut EP ‘On The Wrong Side of History’ was immortalised over a handful of 11am-1am sessions in his studio. Angular guitar scratches meet dirty synth basslines, whilst Simon Tyrie’s Edwyn Collins croon is chased around by effervescent drums. The banal horror of life in Tory Britain expressed with sharp and dry wit, and then set to truly barnstorming and infectious dance music 1) The Wrong Side of History 2) World On Fire 3) Bad Faith (ft. Mandy, Indiana) 4) No More Fun

500 LPs. 180g CLEAR VINYL. 180gm. Lida Husik has her 1997 album 'Fly Stereophonic' released on vinyl for the first time. Lida Husik's versatile recording career has been via a broad pantheon of labels - Shimmy Disc, Caroline Records / Astralwerks, Alias Records and Rough Trade. C D / L P ( w / D O W N L O A D C O D E ) NO EXPORT For Thee Sacred Souls, the first time is often the charm. The bandʼs first club dates led to a record deal with the revered Daptone label; their first singles racked up more than ten million streams in a year and garnered attention from Billboard, Rolling Stone, and KCRW; and their first fans included the likes of Gar y Clark Jr., The Black Pumas, Princess Nokia, and Timbaland. Now, the breakout San Diego trio is ready to deliver yet another landmark first with the release of their highly anticipated, self-titled debut. Thereʼs something inevitable about the sound of Thee Sacred Souls, as if these ageless songs of love and loss have somehow always existed, as if Garcia and his bandmates—bassist Sal Samano and singer Josh Lane—have been playing together for a lifetime already. Produced by Bosco Mann (aka Daptone co-founder Gabriel Roth), the record is warm and textured, mixing the easygoing grace of sweet ʼ60s soul with the grit and groove of early ʼ70s R&B, and the performances are utterly intoxicating, with Laneʼs weightless vocals anchored by the rhythm sectionʼs deep pocket and infectious chemistr y. Hints of Chicano, Philly, Chicago, Detroit, and even Panama soul turn up in their music, and while itʼs tempting to toss around labels like “retro” and “vintage” with a deliberately analog collection like this, thereʼs also something distinctly modern about the band that defies easy categorization, a rawness and a sincerity that transcends time and place. This is the future of Soul Music.

MARKETING HIGHLIGHTS • Over 40 Million streams to date pre album announcement. • World-wide PR/Radio campaigns in US, UK, EU and Latin America. • Previous PR/Radio coverage in LA Times, KCRW, KEXP, Rolling Stone, Cool Hunting, Billboard and many others. • Recent tour support for Belle & Sebastian and St. Paul & the Broken Bones. • Fall headline tours being planned for US and the EU. • Outdoor billboards scheduled in Los Angeles CA for week of release. • Social support from Alicia Keys, Princess Nokia, The Black

Steve Earle has been creating intimate and personal music for well over four decades now. His songwriting has wound itself along a path from Texas to Tennessee and his education came in the form of learning from the best. 2009’s Grammy-nominated record, TOWNES, was a tribute to his dear friend and mentor, Townes Van Zandt. Ten years later Earle released, GUY. An album concentrated on paying homage to the late Guy Clark and the indelible friendship that they had formed in stories told through song. 2022 welcomes the release of JERRY JEFF. A 10-song collection of songs written by the gypsy songman, Jerry Jeff Walker. Featuring hits like, “Mr. Bojangles” and “Gettin’ By”, Earle & The Dukes honor the late Texan by amplifying the concept and sound of each song with a full-band recording.

OVERVIEW Alain and Stéphane Quême, or Alan Braxe and DJ Falcon, are indisputable architects of the French Touch - the emotive house music conjured from looped samples with an inimitable Gallic flare that emerged from Paris in the mid 90s. A source of infinite inspiration, time and time again subsequent generations of dance music producers have cycled back and discovered the joys to be found in the stomping repetition of endlessly tweaked and filtered disco and soul sound grabs. These two originals will present their first ever collaboration as Braxe & Falcon in the form of the Step By Step EP, released on Smugglers Way. The release represents a sublime distillation of their shared musical essence, a revelatory realization and a compelling expansion only conceivable for them at this point in time. The collaboration between Braxe and Falcon serves to create a modern duo both in scope and talent; Braxe is known for making some of the most important and iconic house and pop music records of the late 90s and early 2000s including “Music Sounds Better With You” (The Upper Cuts) as Stardust with Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter and official remixes for Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Kelis, Kylie Minogue and more. Bangalter also collaborated with DJ Falcon in the early days, releasing the French Touch anthem “So Much Love To Give” as the duo Together. Along with quintessential remixes for Phoenix, Cassius and Justice. Falcon most recently co-produced / wrote and featured on “Contact”, the explosive closing track of Daft Punk’s 2013 megalith Random Access Memories.

TOUR DATES

TOMMY MCLAIN I RAN DOWN EVERY DREAM LP / CD STREET DATE: AUGUST 26, 2022 On August 26, Yep Roc Records will release I Ran Down Every Dream, the first album in over four decades by swamp pop legend Tommy McLain. Produced by his musical protege C.C. Adcock, the album features thirteen tracks, including ten original songs written or co-written by McLain. I Ran Down Every Dream was recorded in Louisiana, Texas, California, and England, with a similarly disparate group of friends and fans, including Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe (both of whom contribute co-writes), plus Jon Cleary, Denny Freeman, Ed Harcourt, Roy Lowe, Augie Meyers, Ivan Neville, Van Dyke Parks, Mickey Raphael, Steve Riley, Speedy Sparks, Warren Storm and more. As an album, I Ran Down Every Dream is both a celebration and a requiem. It bookends a career that has seen Tommy scale the upper reaches of the Billboard charts, share the stage with the likes of Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, The Yardbirds and ZZ Top, and become a global ambassador for the swamp pop sound - that singularly affecting combination of rhythm and blues, country and western, gospel, and traditional French Louisiana styles. The album also looks back, with more than a little heartache, in tribute to some of the fellow musical travelers that McLain has lost. Two tracks on the album were written by McLain’s dear friend and Louisiana music royalty Bobby Charles, and it also marks the final sessions for two legendary musicians who died in 2021; Texas guitar slinger Denny Freeman, and Tommy’s close collaborator Warren Storm. For McLain himself, the years-long road to I Ran Down Every Dream was beset by a heart attack, two hurricanes and a house fire. With every obstacle he overcame, McLain’s resolve to complete I Ran Down Every Dream grew stronger. Tommy McLain is perhaps the last great artist from rock ‘n’ roll’s pioneering first generation awaiting rediscovery. The signature swamp pop sound that he helped create spawned multiple national hits in the 1960s and inspired artists like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Little Feat, and Tony Joe White, among others. His best known songs - “Sweet Dreams,” “Before I Grow Too Old” and “Try To Find Another Man” - are to this day considered cornerstones of the genre. He’s been inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame (twice!), earned a gold record for writing “If You Don’t Love Me (Why Don’t You Just Leave Me Alone)” for Freddy Fender, and even appeared - as himself - in the 1975 Paul Newman thriller The Drowning Pool.

Rachika Nayar ‘Heaven Come Crashing’ Heaven Come Crashing finds the protean guitarist and producer leaving behind the ghostly netherworlds of her debut in favor of vivid, fluorescent, cinematic maximalism. Heaven Come Crashing, the sophomore electronic fulllength from Brooklyn-based composer and producer Rachika Nayar, finds the protean guitarist and producer leaving behind the ghostly netherworlds of her debut in favor of vivid, fluorescent, cinematic maximalism. On her debut, Our Hands Against the Dusk, Nayar used her guitar as the primary source for sound design, mutating the instrument beyond recognition through layers of digital processing. Soon after, the album’s companion EP, fragments, demonstrated the types of raw guitar-playing that would be transfigured into those grander compositions—miniature genre sketches that touched upon everything from post-rock to Midwestern emo. With these two 2021 releases, Rachika resculpted the limits of both guitar and electronic music, placing her at the forefront of various contemporary music scenes in her current home of New York City and more broadly amongst the likes of Mary Lattimore, Julianna Barwick, and Tim Hecker.

Heaven Come Crashing retains Nayar’s mangled guitar stylings but expands the color palette by looking not so much to the fretboard, as to the dance floor and the silver screen. Influences enter into the frame ranging from 90s trance, to early M83, to Yoko Kanno anime soundtracks. With its M1 piano stabs, supersaws, and glimpses of Amen breaks, the album charts a luminescent space between 5 a.m. warehouse raves and the urban freeways of its cover image—romantic, nocturnal, and reckless in its velocity and emotional abandon. Regarding this interpretation, Nayar says: “I both love and feel so wary of melodrama, because its inherent nature is to be uncritical. It’s just unabashed emotion taken at face value. And isn’t that so fraught when feelings originate with structures you can’t control, that you maybe even feel at war with?” Within this conflicted relationship to its own theatrics, the album wages a battle between surrendering to desire and incinerating it. Heaven Come Crashing invites the listener to revel within fantasy, before helping light the match to burn it down—one final embrace in the dream world before it shatters to pieces.

Dendrons

5-3-8 When it came time to record 5-3-8—the title being a reference to the lyrical refrain that appears at a few points of the album of “Fifths, thirds, octaves only”— Dendrons decamped to Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas, and did additional recording at Highland Recording Studio in Phoenix, Arizona, producing the album with Tony Brant and Sonny DiPerri. A far cry away from where they started as two friends doing everything themselves, from the recording to the booking to even the graphic design, the band is now an eagerly collaborative project. And they’re already thinking about what’s to come. “You’re always gonna leave a record feeling like there is something more to be said,” Jarvie says. “I don’t believe in a magnum opus. Art is contextual, and exists for the specific time and circumstance it was created in. Every record is a conversation with the last.”

At times, the music seems a juxtaposition: ballistic, suffocating, pummeling, sweetness. Hints of sugar and quiet laced with regimented madness. A joyful racket that pulses throughout ....“ Vents Magazine

CD Box Lot: 30 Packaging: 4 Panel Digipack

Dendrons hit the road before they even knew exactly where they were headed. On New Year’s Day 2018, Dane Jarvie and Zak Sprenger first convened in Chicago to start a new project, recording a demo at home by the seat of their pants, and almost immediately after, began to play shows. “I would just email as many people as possible,” says Jarvie. “I’m like, ‘Can we open this?’ It didn’t matter if it was in Dallas or New Orleans or Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It was like, let’s go.” With a band name chosen by flipping through books in the library (“Dendron” is Greek for “tree”) and a sound and lineup in healthy evolution as they bounced around North America, Dendrons were finding who they were in front of a live audience. Over the course of 2018 and 2019, they were developing a propulsive, acerbic rock style both reminiscent of midwestern peers like Deeper and Dehd and reaching beyond to develop an unmistakable aura all their own. They put out their debut, 2020’s Dendrons, and were packing their bags for a full European tour before it had to be abruptly canceled when borders closed and venues shut down around the world. Suddenly, a band that cut their teeth on the road had to get comfortable staying at home. “It was out of necessity,” says Jarvie, who started brainstorming ideas for a new album back at his family’s home in Phoenix, Arizona, just after the pandemic took hold. When he returned to Chicago a few months later, the full band of Jarvie (vocals/guitar/synth), Sprenger (synth/guitar), Matt Kase (bass/synth/vocals), John MacEachen (guitar/samples), Nick Togliatti (drums), and Stef Roti (drums) formed a bubble to get together and work out what would prove to be their highly ambitious and meticulously crafted second album, 5-3-8. “It was just like, well, we can’t tour, we can’t do anything,” Jarvie remembers. “So we might as well just stick together and really create something.” Meeting three or four times a week, and ultimately rehearsing almost 40 song ideas, Dendrons began to methodically whittle down the batch to a set of songs that weaved through one another intricately, with lyrical and musical motifs dancing around a swirling rock arrangement. Taken on their own, tracks like “Vain Repeating” and “Octaves Only” tap into the manic energy and wit of bands like Wire and Stereolab—but in the context of the album’s full vision, they come together to paint an album informed by post-truth spectacle, and a desire for optimism in the face of isolation. The lyrics paint those emotions with subtlety, having been put together partially through a cut-up method, grabbing words and phrases from places such as CNN and CSPAN. “That was a real intention with this record was to try different techniques in terms of how words are coming together—stringing together sentences through collage,” Jarvie explains. On “New Outlook 1,” he sings in his direct, almost Stephen Malkmus-like style: “Soon we’ll be stooped over laughing / Watching ourselves high on a vision.”

Operating between the European electronic dance music tradition— minimal techno, French house—and American indie, Benoit and Sergio have always existed in a sonically liminal space. It’s no different here with their debut album, "Lost Decade," which explores themes of displacement, isolation, and fugitive time within a context of gently shifting kaleidoscopic synth work.

Benoit & Sergio / Lost Decade FFR-443 Released worldwide August 24, 2022 UPC 860006078423 634457088894 (sunburst) 634457088900 (translucent)

The opening track, ‘It’s Enough You Mention Me,’ sets the tone for the album. Its lyrics—"the other day I found tracks we made”—refer to tapes of old field recordings Benoit came across in storage during the early stages of studio work for the LP. These sounds, stretched and distorted like a memory throughout the track, serve as the madeleine for the record, triggering a reflection on music and friendship that embodies the pair’s journey and creative partnership to date.

This decade-plus journey has been peppered with accolades and milestones. Awarded the iTunes Breakthrough Electronic Artists of the Year in 2011, they were also voted a Top 10 Live act in the world by Resident Advisor two years in a row. A steady stream of EPs and 12”s followed on a variety of labels, including DFA, Ghostly, Visionquest, and Soul Clap. Songs such as ‘New Ships’ were awarded Best New Track by Pitchfork and worldwide touring became their schedule for many years. However, despite the acclaim and growing popularity of the duo, they remained a musical force that did things on their own terms, eschewing fickle trends or following any pre-prescribed roads. They retained an element of mystery, choosing to willingly lurk in the shadows and haunt the periphery, rather than chase spotlights. This is reflected in the slow-burn approach to releasing their debut album, a record that in many senses is an ode to lost time. The tone of their debut—mixed by Beatriz Artola and mastered by Heba Kadry—was born from the environment and time it was created in. Despite living in Berlin and Paris, they reconvened in DC, where they first started working on music together for the initial studio recording. Taking time to pause from touring, the tracks began to

Title:

YOU OF NOW PT. 1

Streetdate: 8/26/22

OVERVIEW Open-eared and open-hearted: these are the watchwords of Léa Sen’s music. At just 22 years old, the Paris-born, London-based, songwriter and producer has established herself as one of the capital’s most in-demand talents, meandering between vocal features for Joy Orbison to solo work that references everything from Bon Iver’s electronic timbre and folk guitars to Sampha’s impressionistic lyricism. At 15 Sen learned the guitar and began to craft songs with an experimental, intuitive sensibility. Production and mixing skills soon followed out of a DIY necessity. In 2019 she moved to London from her home of Paris and caught the ears of drummer Kwake Bass and singer-songwriter Wu-Lu. A session with DJ and producer Joy Orbison produced the stand-out track “Better” from his 2021 mixtape, Still Slipping, Vol. 1. And that same year Sen’s tender version of David Bowie’s 1976 track “Golden Years” was the highlight of the Modern Love compilation album, featuring the likes of Helado Negro, Khruangbin and Meshell Ndegeocello. The five-track debut, You of Now Pt. 1, presents the self-assured maturity of an artist twice her age, with all tracks written, produced and mixed by Sen.

Roots and Crowns Thrill-163/THJ - 70163

*90377-ABGDCb GENRE: ROCK FILE UNDER: “C” “Califone” Roots and Crowns. “Uniting where you come from – your roots -- with what you strive to be or what you reinvent yourself to become -- crowns,” explains Califone’s Tim Rutili. “At the bottom of these songs are the memories and images you sift through in the process.” Califone’s earliest roots lie in the band Red Red Meat, from whence came Califone’s founding members Tim Rutili and Ben Massarella and its longtime producer Brian Deck. The band’s first release was a self-titled EP on Flydaddy in 1998, followed later by the full-length debut, Roomsound, in 2001 (recently re-issued on Thrill Jockey) and eventually the band’s Thrill Jockey debut, Quicksand/Cradlesnakes in 2003. After touring for the release of Roomsound, Califone had little time off to take in the impact of the music they were creating. In three years, they recorded four albums (two instrumental, two song-based including Heron King Blues) and toured heavily in between with Wilco, Modest Mouse, Sea and Cake and others. They performed at All Tomorrow’s Parties curated by Sonic Youth and Rutili contributed to Isaac Brock’s Ugly Casanova project and Michael Krassner’s Boxhead Ensemble with Fred Lonberg-Holm and members of Smog and Dirty Three. “Before we started to work on the new the record, I was listening to ‘Orchids’ by Psychic TV on repeat,” says Rutili. “This song made me want to start writing songs again.” Califone offers a sparse and beautiful cover of “Orchids” on Roots & Crowns. The line from the song, ‘In the morning after the night/ I fall in love with the light,’ became a theme for the new album. Imagery of rebirth comes up often on Roots & Crowns. On “3 Legged Animals,” Rutili sings, “3 legged animals shut their sweet eyes/ lick your scars and grow wings,” and later, “leave your memories, we’re almost new.” He explains, “that song started out as a song called ‘Dreamless’ for the end credits of The Lost. The last scene in the film is a total bloodbath; after that it seemed like the film could use a little sweetness, a bit of salvation for these dark, misfit characters after a period of intense violence. We re-recorded it with Califone and took a more detailed approach, both lyrically and instrumentally. Where the first version felt more about balancing the mood of the film, the one from the album feels more about hope and joy, rebirth, survival and self-acceptance.” Califone started recording Roots & Crowns in October 2005 and worked on it in chunks at 4Deuces Studio in Chicago with Brian Deck, in Long Beach and Phoenix with Michael Krassner, and at home in Los Angeles and Chicago until May 2006. “Some of these songs started as hummed melodies into my cell phone recorder while I was driving. Others were triggered by overheard conversations, loops brought in from home, field recordings or sounds we made in the studio before the tape was rolling,” says Rutili. For instance ‘Spider’s House’ is built on the sound of a piano with duct tape and paper clips all over its wires. “We took our time to shape and manipulate a more experimental collage of sounds into solid melodies and more concise song structures.” The time away and each member’s individual work naturally brought new elements into the sound of Califone’s music. Both Rutili’s and Becker’s soundtrack work are more atmospheric, however the challenge of enhancing a scene of film without cluttering it or overwhelming it informed their approach to the new recording. The burglary of Califone’s equipment during the band’s last tour, including guitars, banjo, a 1917 violin, bells and more, altered the sound. The band had to find new gear on a tight budget. The instruments are new partners, new sounds that forced them to stretch in new directions. Limitations, obstructions and darkness, and the new possibilities they illuminate; roots and crowns. “In that way”, says Rutili, “this album is a conscious and resolved thing. It fully realizes ideas we touched on in the past and where we come from as a band, and takes us into our next phase of life.”

Chagall Guevara : Halcyon Days cd

btv126

On paper, Chagall Guevara were an absurd proposition: Start with five musicians in their mid 30s who were already years deep into reasonably profitable music careers. Have them junk those careers completely and cram into a van to play remote clubs in the American South, subsisting on convenience store snack and scraping together their per diems to pay the bills and buy the occasional cheap gift for their wives and children. (Did I not mention their wives and children? They have wives and children.) Appoint an absentee manager, fire the staff of their record company, and have them try to break into the mainstream almost a year before “Smells Like Teen Spirit” made al rock the lingua franca of American Radio. Oh, and also: Give them a band name that no one can pronounce.

On the other hand, absurdism was a crucial part of Chagall Guevara’s DNA. [the band] imagines Jonathan Swift writing for The Stooges, pairing razoredged social satire with searing guitars in songs that pierce like poisontipped arrows. At the time, the band was fond of saying that they were trying to play intelligent music like mindless fools. As frontman Steve Taylor wryly put it during a 1991 press conference at a festival in the UK: “We got the last part right, I think.” Critics took note: A glowing, three-and-a-half-star review in Rolling Stone raved, “Not since the Clash has a group so effectively turned militant discontent into passionate rock & roll.” And while the band didn’t scale the heights of rock stardom to which it seemed they were destined, what’s striking now, thirty years later, is how prescient the band seems. –J. Edward Keyes Thirty years ago Nashville’s rock scene was not the thriving hotbed it is known for today. In fact, it was barely hanging on life support. Enter Chagall Guevara, part of a fresh cast of music makers—recent arrivals to “the Music City.” Oblivious to the low bar of expectation for rock bands, the group set its sights on getting noticed by record companies in Los Angeles and New York. Word spread fast as they made the jump from sold out local shows, to opening act slots for the alternative rock darlings of the day, to signing with a major label, and quickly becoming a critics’ darling. Over 30 years from their heralded national debut, Chagall Guevara has returned to the studio with their original co-producer, Matt Wallace (Maroon 5, The Replacements, Faith No More, Train, O.A.R.) The result is Halcyon Days—a fierce, burning collection of songs that are assertive, immediate, and remarkably timely.

Chagall Guevara : The Last Amen 2xLP/cd

btv124

Who in the hell is Chagall Guevara and why does he matter? Surely Tom Cording, the publicist for MCA Records, was wrong when he told me Chagall Guevara was from Nashville. Shit, I thought Mr. Guevara was dead!! Anyway, why would a revolutionary operate out of there, unless he was a true subversive with a death wish? Tom assure me I was mistaken, and that Chagall Guevara was the name of a band, indeed out of Nashville. Oh, and by the way, look for a package in the post with their new self-titled album on a promo cassette (MCA spared no expense). The day the package arrived, I immediately noticed the opening track title, “Murder in the Big House.” Uplifting!! I jumped in my van with the cassette and went for a drive across the Mississippi River. I brought along some road mix cassettes of proven rock tracks as back-ups, in case this Chagall stuff was just more polished toe-tapping “rock.” Needless to say, I never got around to my tried-and-true road tapes. By the time I got to the West Memphis levee, I was sure I heard the finest rock and roll album to come out of Nashville, maybe an album that would endure for the ages. This concerned me. If I loved it that much, it usually was a sign this was destined for the cut-out bins in no time. (Cue: ominous foreshadowing music biz tragedy underscore here.)

When I got home, I couldn't’ call the record label fast enough to ask when I could see this band. The next things I knew, I had an invite to attend a Chagall Guevara show on November 15th, 1991 in Nashville at a warehouse-turned-venue called 328 Performance Hall. This was one show I would drive from Memphis to Nashville to experience, and what a show it was! The album is a classic, but this concert was an indelible experience that too the already excellent studio material to an even more emotionally immediate level. Years passed, and the memory of their no-holdsbarred performance and a killer CD fueled my sense that this was one of the great bands that slipped through the cracks. Many of the tracks from that album became regulars on my coveted road mix collections. It was a little like having something special that had become an unintended secret. It is the kind of thing that makes one a disciple because it is selfish to not spread the word. When the band recently sent me the recording of this 1991 album release show, I was blown away at how it was every bit as good as I remembered it and then some. This isn’t merely a document of a band recreating what was recorded in the studio. This is the sound of a real, dynamic band, where everyone was on the same wavelength, laying down their visceral truth with newly minted music. Steve Taylor was an eyeful on stage. I’m not even sure he is a vertebrate because human beings with any regard for personal safety don’t through themselves around on the stage like a possessed rag doll without breaking bones. Not for one second did I ever feel like I was watching some arena rock poseur moves. He was totally in the moment, shooting sparks, words, and limbs, thrashing away as the band navigated a tightrope that was simultaneously chaotic and rock solid. Wanna hear what a great guitar team sounds like? Check out Lynn Nichols and Dave Perkins on this live recording. Dave and his Les Paul can be heard on the left channel with Lynn’s 6 and 12-string counterpoint on the right side. What a conversation between the two! It is rawness orchestrated by intuition. As much as guitar platers seem to get most of the love in rock bands, much of the secret sauce in Chagall Guevara is the unshakable rhythm section of Wade Jaynes on bass and Mike Mead on drums. I absolutely love how solid they are. Something about Mike’s snare and kick sound is so confident and grounding, and Wade’s bass balances melodicism with the right about of string buzz and rattle. Picking highlights here is impossible. Just put this on your turntable, turn out the lights, and crank this sucker up. Kudos to Malcolm Harper for the recording of the performance and to Russ Long, who’s been part of the band’s journey since the beginning, for mixing this live show so faithfully. He nailed the spirit of that night. At the ending crescendo of “Murder in the Big House,” Taylor and the band are screaming, “who will say the last amen?” All I can say is, “Not, me!!!” I’m ready for more. –Rick Clark There was a time in the not-too-distant past when music was performed in front of live audiences. The best bands were judged both by the creativity they sparked in a recording studio and the electricity they generated on a stage. Chagall Guevara's 1991 self-titled debut can still be heard wherever fine music is streamed. But their live show is a fading memory for those who saw them back-in-the-day performing in clubs, a handful of music festivals, and as the opening act for Squeeze on their U.K. tour. On November 15th of 1991, at the height of the band's musical powers, Chagall Guevara's live show was recorded to 24 tracks of analog splendor in front of a very rowdy hometown crowd at Nashville's legendary 328 Performance Hall. With the band's full cooperation, it has now been lovingly mixed by Russ Long, who began his illustrious career as a recording engineer and producer by mixing Chagall Guevara's live shows. That live album, now entitled The Last Amen, is finally ready to be heard.

Chime School is the project of San Francisco musician Andy Pastalaniec. Endlessly charmed by 80s indie and its 60s forbearers (and any record with a 12-string guitar), Andy cut his teeth as a drummer with SLR labelmate Odd Hope in their early group Pink Films; later with shoegazers Cruel Summer, and currently with indiepop outfit Seablite. But it wasn't until he was gifted a cassette 4-track portastudio "almost as a dare," that he came out from behind the kit to write and record his own material. Aptly named for its autodidact roots, Chime School pays homage to the formative jangle of The Byrds by way of early Primal Scream and The Springfields; the production and pop sensibility of the Biff Bang Pow and The Razorcuts; and the spirit of great singles labels like Creation, Postcard and Sarah. From the dreamy album opener "Wait Your Turn" to the driving jangle of "Dead Saturdays" and the lush, epic "Gone Too Fast" we can see that we're in the presence of a very talented writer indeed, someone with a lifetime's worth of pop fandom just waiting to burst out in song. It's challenging to take familiar musical forms and make them feel fresh and new, but Andy has tackled the task with aplomb on this assured debut. Featuring future classic singles like "It's True" and "Taking Time To Tell You" it's certain to catch the ears of indiepop fans, for sure, but will also be a balm for anyone in love with melodic, classic guitar pop. Cameron Morse - The Truth Is Release Date: August 26th 2022 12” Black Vinyl LM085EP | 5060263728986 Boxlot: 25 | Ⓟ & © 2022 LuckyMe Cameron Morse is a Montreal based musician and visual artist whose experimental production and art direction first created waves as half of Littlebabyangel with their cult 2015 release Gada a mixtape circulated via email chain letter, laterally reviewed by Pitchfork who said it “...feels like entering the eye of a hurricane”. Following up with a standout remix on Jacques Greene’s Dawn Chorus and two tracks for the celebrated LUCKYME® Advent Calendar compilations - The Truth Is fully reveals the political impetus behind Cameron’s artistic practice: his music, fashion design, writing and digital painting. Cameron considers The Truth Is part of a years-long self initiated project named Anthropocene: an upcycled clothing experiment meant to end fast fashion. Through single editions of garments, we can literally produce an individual personal style. But those garments carry blunt, factual typographic prints which badge us within a micro community proudly aware of consumption, desire, commerce and inequality. The work aims to create a waypoint for people feeling unable to contribute to the body politic. On The Truth Is, the stems of todays bedroom producer - hacked poly synth, drum machine, electric guitar and voice - gel to express our milieu. These textures tune-out and drop-in: suspending themselves in the air of a room for our generation to externalise doomer vacuity beyond the body. Projected out of you, let’s start by looking at the problem: then it might be clearer for us to move forward. This stunning EP expresses the loss of meaning within the modern world and begs we move together towards our potential future.

“Holy Now are one of those bands who posses a magical spirit and project an easiness about their art that is captivating on first listen.” - Gorilla vs. Bear “the perfect mixture of the bitter with the sweet” - CLASH

Holy Now is one of the finest indie bands to have emerged from Sweden in recent years. Perfect yet deliberately off, dreamy indie pop with Julia Olanders voice at the center. On August 26th, they’ll release their new album via Lazy Octopus Records (AOP, Therese Lithner, MANKIND etc.) 2018 debut album “I Think I Need The Light” and follow-up EP “It Will All End In Tears” were acclaimed both internationally by prominent media, such as Gold Flake Paint, Gorilla Vs Bear and Line of Best Fit. On the band’s second studio album “Dream of Me”, out this fall via Lazy Octopus, the building blocks remain: crisp reverb-drenched guitars, dreamy choruses and a very analog feel. It also showcases a new side of the band that is more withdrawn, dressed in sparse soundscapes, with a lot of focus on lyrics, a song for anyone who wears their heart on the outside. Tracklist: 1. Ballad, 2. Places, 3. Hold Me / Know Me, 4. Dream of Me, 5. Never Fall In Love Again, 6. Silk, 7. Alright, 8. Don’t You Understand, 9. Every Time The Morning Comes
